Lowrance Pro Ryan Salzman Takes First Major League Fishing Win at Stage Five

Tulsa, Okla. – Lowrance®, a world-leader in fishing electronics since 1957, is pleased to congratulate Lowrance pro angler Ryan Salzman on his first Major League Fishing (MLF) Bass Pro Tour win at General Tire Stage Five on Watts Bar Lake in Spring City, Tenn., June 4-9, 2022.

Equipped with the Lowrance Ultimate Fishing System, including HDS LIVE 12 displays, ActiveTarget® Live Sonar, Active Imaging™ 3-in-1 and Ghost® Trolling Motor, Salzman brought in 13 bass totaling 24 pounds, 13 ounces in the Championship Round to bring home the $100,000 prize.

“I could not have won this event without my Lowrance ActiveTarget and Ghost Trolling Motor,” said Salzman. “I held my current the entire time using my Ghost, which is super tough and durable, and I was able to see fish out to 80 feet with ActiveTarget. The Ultimate Fishing System is so efficient, and everything worked flawlessly.”

The Alabama native joined the tour in February and this event was his first time qualifying for the Championship Round.  Other career highlights include four Phoenix Bass Fishing League wins, a Top 10 finish in the Forrest Wood Cup, and he finished third in the Angler of the Year race on the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit in 2021.

Of the five Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour Stages held in 2022, Lowrance Pro Anglers have finished in the top spot four times, in addition to the 2022 Redcrest Championship won by Lowrance Pro Bobby Lane.

SPRING CITY, Tenn. (June 9, 2022) – It was a fight to the finish during Thursday’s Championship Round among the very best anglers in the sport, but when time ran out it was Mercury pro Ryan Salzman of Huntsville, Alabama, whose name sat at the top of the SCORETRACKER® at the General Tire Stage Five on Watts Bar Lake Presented by Covercraft in Spring City, Tennessee. The Bass Pro Tour newcomer weighed 13 bass totaling 24 pounds, 3 ounces, to earn his first Bass Pro Tour win – as well as his first major career win – and take home the big red trophy and the top award of $100,000.

“Right now, I’m just putting all my trust in God, and that’s the only way I can rise up to this moment, because it’s too big for me,” Salzman said in the final moments as the clock ticked down. “Words just can’t describe how I feel even being in contention to win this event, especially going up against some of the greatest anglers in the world. Fishing against my childhood heroes, it’s just amazing.”

Moments later, time expired and Salzman was announced the General Tire Stage Five Champion on Watts Bar Lake.

“I never in my life thought I would win this event,” Salzman said excitedly, amid cheers from fans and followers who surrounded him on the water. “I knew the winning fish were in this area, but I didn’t know if they would bite today. I’ve lost several fish this week, even lost 2 or 3 today that would have given me more of a cushion at the end of the day, but I’m just speechless and so thankful for this opportunity.”

Thursday marked the first time the Alabama pro has qualified for the Championship Round on the MLF Bass Pro Tour since joining the tour in February and culminated in a moment he said he will never forget.

“First and foremost, I have to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” Salzman said. “I’ve been a mess the last few years but have made a lot of life changes and attitude changes, so to go from where I was 3-4 years ago, to where I am today, there just isn’t anything that He can’t do.”

Salzman said he found his winning area above the Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) Watts Bar Dam during practice and knew it had potential, but as the tournament progressed, he realized the bass were only schooling and feeding during certain time windows.

“This has been a week of highs and lows and the way my tournament began, I didn’t think this win was a possibility,” Salzman said. “I found this spot above the dam on the first day, with hundreds of bass schooling and stacked up against this wall. I knew there were enough fish here to win the event, I just had to figure out how to catch them.”

Salzman hit the first obstacle during his Qualifying Round, in large part because the fish in his winning area weren’t schooling. He finished in 15th place after his first day and ended the second day in 16th place to advance to the Knockout Round – and that’s where the fun really began.

“On Wednesday, the TVA began running water through the dam, generating 30,000, 40,000 watts, stirring up the bait fish and in turn, the bass,” Salzman said. “Once they started moving the water, this spot really lit up. The majority of the fish I caught this week were right here in this spot, on a 4½-inch morning dawn-colored Roboworm with an 1/8-ounce Titan Tungsten ball weight.”

Salzman’s flurry halted to a stop about an hour and a half prior to the end of the tournament day, as the TVA turned down the generators and the bass around him stopped feeding. Not to be deterred from the win, Salzman made a quick pivot to another place on the dam, boating a 2-pounder.

“With only 25 minutes left in the day, that kicker fish made all the difference,” Salzman finished.

The Mercury pro earned the win by a slim 11-ounce margin over Academy Sports + Outdoors pro Jacob Wheeler of Harrison, Tennessee , who finished Championship Day in second place with a total of 10 scorable bass, weighing 23-8. Although Wheeler missed the $100,000 win by mere ounces, he earned valuable points in the 2022 Bally Bet Angler of the Year (AOY) race. Wheeler, the reigning 2021 AOY winner, currently leads again with 379 points after five regular-season events, while Jordan Lee sits in second place with 341 points. Dayton, Tennessee’s Andy Morgan sits in third with 315 points. Kevin VanDam is in fourth place with 302.5 points, while Randall Tharp rounds out the top five with 302 points.

The top 10 pros at the General Tire Stage Five on Watts Bar Lake Presented by Covercraft finished:

1st:           Ryan Salzman, Huntsville, Ala., 13 bass, 24-3, $100,000

Wheeler caught a largemouth weighing 4 pounds, 2 ounces on a drop-shot rig in the second period to win Thursday’s 1,000 Berkley Big Bass Award. Pro Brandon Coulter of Knoxville, Tennessee took home the $3,000 Berkley Big Bass of the tournament with his 6-7 largemouth that he caught on Day 1. Parks, Smith Take Lead In Bassmaster College Event, Vying For Repeat On Saginaw Bay

Parks, Smith Take Lead In Bassmaster College Event, Vying For Repeat On Saginaw Bay

[print_link]

BAY CITY, Mich. — It’s safe to say, Logan Parks and Tucker Smith enjoy fishing Saginaw Bay.

With a Day 1 limit of smallmouth weighing 22 pounds, 15 ounces, the Auburn University duo claimed the lead at the Strike King Bassmaster College Series at Saginaw Bay presented by Bass Pro Shops. They are looking to repeat on the fishery after winning this same event last season.

Their Day 1 bag exceeded their biggest limit from last year (21-0), and the duo holds nearly a 2-pound lead over Brian Linder and Nathan Thompson from Minnesota State-Mankato.

“This is just an awesome fishery,” Parks said. “They aren’t everywhere but when you find them you really find them. We have a pretty special place we found last year and it is producing again.”

After winning the Bassmaster College Series Team of the Year championship in 2021 as well, Parks and Smith had a tough start to this season but qualified for the National Championship at Norfork Lake. With that goal achieved, Parks added winning was the only thing on their minds this week.

After fishing exclusively for smallmouth in their best area during the 2021 event, Smith and Parks arrived at their spot today and caught over 20 pounds within 15 minutes. They made a couple of short moves, resulting in several key culls throughout the day.

“It was like three casts in a row that we had three 4-pounders,” Parks said. “We caught our limit, culled once and left it after we got to 20 pounds. We ran around and fished some other stuff that was nearby that set up the same way, and we were able to cull up.”

Smith said they decided early on in practice that focusing solely on smallmouth would be their best chance at achieving that goal. Those smallmouth bites have all revolved around the spawn and most of their damage was done with one bait.

“They are in all stages right now,” Smith said. “I think we are catching more spawners than post-spawners where we are catching them. You can see rocks and see an occasional one swim around. But they are glued to the bottom and you just have to fish around and wait for a bite.”

With more bass left in their primary area and a couple of secondary areas left to fish as well, Parks and Smith are optimistic about their chances at a repeat.

“We left them biting. There are more fish there, and we have a few places that have some fish on them that we didn’t fish hard at all today,” Smith said. “We are looking forward to it. Hopefully, they bite and we get some good weather and we can go catch them.”

Dakota Posey and Trent Buchholz from Lamar State College Orange anchored their 20-14 third-place bag with a 5-8 largemouth, earning Big Bass of the day honors.

The full field will launch from the Independence Boat Launch at the USS Edison Battle Ship starting at 5:30 a.m. ET and will return for weigh-in beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Following the Day 2 weigh-in, 19 teams will earn a spot in the 2022 Strike King Bassmaster College National Championship at Winyah Bay presented by Bass Pro Shops Sept. 2-4.

The tournaments are being hosted by the Michigan B.A.S.S. Nation.

Bassmaster College Series Takes On Logan Martin With Last-Chance Championship Qualifier

LINCOLN, Ala. — College anglers will have one last chance to qualify for the Strike King Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops when teams from around the country take on Alabama’s Logan Martin Lake for a Wild Card tournament June 17-18. The Wild Card gives teams waitlisted for the other four regular-season events one last chance to make it into the field for the National Championship Sept. 2-4 on South Carolina’s Winyah Bay.

Bassmaster Elite Series champion and Coosa River guru Wes Logan believes a lot of bass will be caught, but that finding a couple of 3-pounders will be the key.

“It has a lot of 1- to 2 1/2-pounders in Logan Martin,” Logan said. “It has quite a few big ones too, but they aren’t everywhere. The average total weight this time of year isn’t going to be really high, somewhere between 8 and 11 pounds. It is going to be hard to catch anything over 12 pounds.”

Located between Neely Henry and Lay Lake, the Coosa River impoundment features both spotted bass and largemouth bass. Last year’s Wild Card event was held on Lay, and while they are on the same river chain, there are several differences in how the reservoirs are set up.

“They are more different than they are similar,” Logan said. “Lay has a lot more vegetation, whereas Logan Martin is more of a rocky-type place with hard structure like docks, gravel banks and long running points. Logan Martin is a little dirtier than Lay up the river. Logan Martin is one of the biggest party lakes in the area, and late in the day you will have a lot of pontoon boats and wake boats.”

Compared to a lot of other lakes in the country, Logan Martin is relatively small, but Logan said much of the lake will play.

“Especially this time of year, you can catch fish shallow, you can fish out deep on ledges,” he said. “You can fish brushpiles, humps and roadbeds. There are a lot of fish and it will spread guys out to where they can fish their strengths.”

Logan Martin is controlled by dams on either end of the lake, presenting the opportunity to fish current-oriented bass. Depending on the moon cycle, Logan added there could be a bluegill spawn happening as well.

If summer downpours and storms roll through, Logan said anglers will be more likely to find a bigger bite using frogs, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits. A shaky head will likely come into play as well.

While it could be won with all spotted bass or all largemouth, Logan anticipates it will take a mixed bag.

“You can catch a 4-pound spot in the same place you catch a 4-pound largemouth,” he said. “The better game plan would be to target largemouth and you might happen to catch one or two really good spots to go with it.

“As a whole, there are a lot more spotted bass than largemouth. If someone can crack the code on better-quality largemouth, you may not get as many bites, but if you are fishing to win — that is what I would do.”

The full field will compete June 17-18 with daily takeoffs from Lincoln’s Landing at 5:30 a.m. CT. Weigh-ins will take place back at the landing at 1:30 p.m. Coverage can be found on Bassmaster.com.

The tournament is being hosted by the City of Lincoln.

SPRING CITY, Tenn. (June 8, 2022) –B&W Trailer Hitches pro Mark Davis of Mount Ida, Arkansas caught 10 scorable bass Wednesday weighing 25 pounds, 12-ounces, to win the Knockout Round and advance to the final day of competition at the General Tire Stage Five on Watts Bar Lake Presented by Covercraft in Spring City, Tennessee.

After taking over the lead mid-day, the Bass Fishing Hall of Famer and three-time Angler of the Year (AOY) winner rose to the top of a stacked field going into Thursday’s Championship Round. Among the star-studded field of pros competing in the Championship Round are fellow Bass Fishing Hall of Famer and Michigan native Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo , who won an automatic berth to the Championship Round on Monday and boasts a staggering eight AOY awards in his astounding career, along with Forrest Wood Cup champion Randall “The Honey Badger” Tharp of Port Saint Joe, Florida , who has seven major wins and more than 30 Top-10 finishes in his career. Tharp finished in second place Wednesday, with 11 bass, weighing 23 pounds, 15 ounces.

The final 10 anglers are now set, and competition will resume Thursday morning with anglers launching at 7:30 a.m. ET in the Championship Round, where weights are zeroed, and the angler that catches the most one-day weight will win the top prize of $100,000.

The six-day event, hosted by Fish Dayton, the Rhea County Economic Tourism Council and Spring City, Tennessee, showcases 80 of the top professional bass-fishing anglers in the world competing for a total purse of $805,000.

The top eight pros from Wednesday’s Knockout Round that will compete in Thursday’s Championship Round on Watts Bar Lake are:

1st:           Mark Davis, Mount Ida, Ark., 10 bass, 25-12

Full results for the entire field can be found at MajorLeagueFishing.com.

“Man, what a great day,” Davis said. “I’ve had two bad tournaments, but I feel like I’m back on track now with my fishing.”

Davis spent most of his day fishing slowly and methodically, cranking and throwing a worm in the back of a creek on a big grass flat, targeting isolated hard cover.

“It’s been a fantastic day, fishing the way I like to fish,” Davis said. “A lot of the fish in this lake are suspended – and that was my back-up pattern for today – but I found a creek that’s about 10-foot-deep, where they aren’t suspended, and you can catch them just fishing stumps, trees and other hard cover.

“The last two days that I’ve fished this creek have been bright, bluebird skies with a little afternoon wind, and I caught a few five-pounders and a three-pounder, so I knew the bigger and better fish lived in here,” Davis continued. “I had a lot of other stuff I could hit today, but I was hoping with the cloud cover and the rain we had this morning, this place would really show out, so I got in here today and just slowed everything down.”

It was a winning technique that worked for the Arkansas pro, who bested 37 other anglers in the Knockout Round to end the day in the top spot.

“I know this creek has had a lot of pressure because it’s the prettiest creek on the lake,” Davis said. “Earlier in the week I was able to get them to eat a big, Texas-rigged worm, but today it took a drop-shot, finesse-fishing real slow to get them to bite, but we got it done.”

Rounding out the top 40 finishers were:

11th:        Takahiro Omori, Tokyo, Japan, eight bass, 16-14, $10,000
12th:        Chris Lane, Guntersville, Ala., seven bass, 16-12, $10,000

Everything is bigger in Texas!

The Toyota ShareLunker Program has geared up to deliver pure Florida strain largemouth bass to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department “TPWD” through the month of July. The bass that will be delivered to help populate Texas fisheries are what are now known as the “Lone Star Bass”. They have been produced from what the Toyota ShareLunker Program consider “Legacy Class” which are over 13-pound bass.

The Toyota ShareLunker Program which was launched in 1986 is a unique program that has participants that catch bass over 13 pounds and loan the bass to the Texas ShareLunker Program during the spawning season of January – March. These bass are then part of the selective breeding program to restock other fisheries. The TPWD has been raising the brood fish in hatcheries since 2018 from the Florida strain initiative. The program has stocked 53 bodies of water with more than 6 million Lone Star Bass since inception.

This program is helping stock Texas fisheries to improve the bass fishing catches on some of the many lakes that they have been able to stock. The pure strain Florida largemouth bass stocking has been in the making for many years going back to 2018. The success of the program has allowed for this first spawning and statewide stocking from the Florida largemouth spawns.

The program has participants that “share” their lunker. These giant bass have proven they have what it takes to survive to trophy class standards. Then they are bred to pass on their resilient genetics, ensuring that the bass being stocked have exactly what it takes to grow to epic proportions.

The program is offered year-round and offers differing levels of participation: Lunker Class (8 pounds plus), Elite Class (10 pounds plus), and Legend Class (13 pounds plus). Providing an entry and participating in the program also enters participants into some drawings with prizes sponsored by Toyota, AFTCO, Bass Pro Shops, and 6th Sense to name a few.

If you visit the texassharelunker.com site you will find which lakes are the best producers and on that list in the top 10 you will find some lakes regularly visited by Major League Fishing and BASS, Lake Fork and Sam Rayburn are 2 that stand out. Lake Fork has produced 16 Lunker Class submissions and 1 Elite Class submission. Sam Rayburn has produced 7 Lunker Class, 4 Elite Class, and 2 Legacy Class submissions. That’s world class fishing at its finest.

With my recent MLF Pro Circuit qualification this news gets me excited for the 2023 season where I will likely get an opportunity to fish one of these mega bass fisheries. Texas here I come!

[print_link]

We had our 5th and Final Qualifier last Saturday at Falls Lake. Good Lord Blessed us with good weather this go around and we definitely appreciated it. We had several things happening Saturday.  We had our usual tournaments but we also had regular season
Points Championships playing out rite in front of us.We had 70 teams come out and try to get the win. Seemed as if the old lake fished tough for most but as usual somebody’s going to figure them out. At the end of the day it was the not surprisingly Team of Scottie Morris and Dan Glosson that topped the field.  They had a 5 fish limit weighing 26.64 pounds. That earned them a total of $2200.00 with the TWT.  Them boys are strong anywhere they go but you put them on Falls Lake and watch out!? Great job guys! They were followed by the team on Brandon Gray and Dannon Garber. They brought in a 5 fish limit weighing 23.73 pounds. That earned them $1105.00 with the TWT. Just a little FYI they wasn’t done collecting after that. We will get to that in a few minutes. Good job guys! BIG fish for the tournament was won by what I call the ( last minute boys!) ? The Heat Is On: Part III: Fishing the Middle by Bruce Callis Jr

The Heat Is On:
Part III: Fishing the Middle
by Bruce Callis Jr

In Part 1 we covered the top of the water column. And in Part 2, we covered the bottom. That leaves the middle section of the water column. The middle can be as little as a couple inches to who knows, depending on the depth of the water. What do we do and what do we throw. Everyone has that special bait they love, or are the most comfortable with. It is all about the reaction baits provoking the bass to strike.

One of my favorite baits is the lipless crankbait. And more precisely, the SPRO Aruku Shad. It can be worked from just below the surface to just above the bottom, and at any depth in between. It can be precise casts to the bank ,out off the points, across grass beds, along bluff walls, or it can be anywhere you want. I prefer to use 10 pound Seaguar Red Label Fluorocarbon on my Bulldog 7’2” lipless crankbait rod and a Quantum EXO reel. The rod and reel allow me to make long casts and I can feel every little bump along the way. Just be ready, for the bass love to just slam it hard. I like to work it a variety of ways, from the slow crawl along the bottom or just ticking the top of the grass. Depending on where the baitfish are relating to, I can work my bait at that depth. I can work it at any speed, but I like to vary the speed with quick burst by turning the reel faster, or even by pulling the lure with my rod. It’s all about trying to find what the bass want at that moment. And it can change from location to time of the day.

I also love to have a one-two punch with my Death Shimmer spinning bait and a chatter bait. I can work them in the shallows and out deep. I especially love to run them both just above the bottom when the bass are hanging deep. Call me crazy, but I don’t like to use braid for them, I still prefer to use fluorocarbon, and depending on where I am, I use either 10 or 12 pound. I don’t feel I as if I lose anything using the lighter Seaguar Red Label Fluorocarbon line, I still have the strength to fight in those big 10 pound bass. Work both around the edges of lily pads and grass lines, making sure to work different depths. I love to work them around the outside of laydowns to help draw a big girl out. And they both work great through stump fields and standing timber.

The jerkbait is one of those lures that works year round. And now is a great time. Shallow running jerkbaits up shallow and deeper diving ones off the drop offs and along the channel. Work around laydowns and the outside edges of the pads and grass. It is also a great choice over the submerged grass beds where bass love to hide and ambush prey. Again, I like to use 10 pound Red Label on a 7’ to 7’2” medium heavy rods. For the lighter, shallow running jerkbaits, I like to use a 7’ medium spinning rod and spool up with 10 pound braid with a 10 foot leader of 10 pound Seaguar Red Label Fluorocarbon.
One lure I don’t fish enough, is a swimbait. Be it a soft plastic on a swim jig, or on a weighted swimbait hook, or one of the hard body models, I just don’t throw it enough. I guess I get frustrated on throwing it over and over without a strike, but like a jig, I know it catches big bass. And I have seen plenty of others who catch those big bass on those big baits. I just don’t have that same confidence. But I am getting better at it, and I will be throwing it more, having one always tied on.

While most people think that a crankbait must hit bottom, I have found that it is also great for working the middle of the water column. I love to run into standing timber with a crankbait, making it jump and dart off of it. It’s all about making the bass react to the sudden change of direction and hit your lure.

Getting Out The Finesse

And then we come to the more finesse methods of covering the middle. Here we go with those baits to trick those finicky bass into biting. And the first I think of is a small swimbait, like a 3.25 inch Missile Baits Shockwave, on a small ballhead jig. Depending on where I am, I will go from 1/16th ounce to 3/16 ounce jig head, and I prefer either a 1/0 or 2/0 hook size. I use a spinning reel setup with a braid main line and a fluorocarbon leader. I like to use anywhere from 8 to 10 pound leader line, but depending on the bass, I have dropped down to a 6 pound leader. And I just reel it back slowly, keeping the bait active with little burst and twitches. And don’t worry, this bait will catch big bass.
The Ned rig is another finesse method. We all think about bouncing it across the bottom, but it is also a great way to catch suspending bass. You can use a short straight worm, like a ZMan TRD, a small Senko, the back end of a used Senko, or something like the Missile Bait Ned Bomb or a little longer 4.25 inch Quiver. Using a spinning rod, cast out and let your bait sink to the desired depth and then reel it back in slowly. Or you can cast it out and let it pendulum back to you on a tight line. It may seem like with it having very little to no action that it wouldn’t work, but bass can’t resist it. Light line is a must, and you can use anything from 4 to 8 pound fluorocarbon.

A spybait is another finesse technique to cover the middle and suspending bass. Using a spinning rod and light line, cast out your bait and let it flutter down to the desired depth. I’ve found a couple methods I like to use. One is the pull and drop. You let it sink, then give it a slow pull with the rod, let it flutter down, then repeat again. The other is the slow retrieve. Cast it out and let it sink, then start a slow retrieve back. I will give it small pulls and let it drop, then start reeling again. Light line is a must also. I prefer a 7 foot to 7’4” medium to medium light action rod for this.

One method that many think of as bottom fishing is the drop shot. But if you look at the setup, the bait is not on the bottom, it is actually suspended above the bottom. And depending on the length of the line between the hook and the weight, it can be 2 feet off the bottom. When fished vertically, you can actually stop the drop of the weight at any depth and have your bait suspended at your desired depth. So don’t always think of a drop shot as bottom fishing.

Covering the middle of the water column is by far more about making the bass react to your bait. We do more of this all the time. Throwing a crankbait to run just above the grass, or ticking the outside edges of the laydowns, it is all about making the bass come to you. What bait are you the most confident in and what will you be throwing? What new bait are you going to try to master to improve your catching?
