Tidal Impacts Will Be Key For Bassmaster Northern Open On James River

RICHMOND, Va. — Independent thinking is the cornerstone of competitive fishing. However, anglers may find that going with the flow leads to success at the St. Croix Bassmaster Northern Open at James River presented by Mossy Oak Fishing.

Competition days will be April 14-16 with daily takeoffs from Osborne Park & Boat Landing at 6:30 a.m. ET. Weigh-ins will take place back at the Landing at 2:30 p.m. The Top 10 boaters after Day 2 will advance to the championship round while the co-angler champion will be crowned at the conclusion of the Day 2 weigh-in. Full coverage can be found on Bassmaster.com.

Emptying into Chesapeake Bay, which meets the Atlantic Ocean, the James River experiences daily ebb and flow, but Bassmaster Elite Series rookie Jonathan Kelley knows well the seasonal tendencies. Moreover, the 2021 Bassmaster Opens Northern Division points champion, who placed eighth at last year’s James River Open, nods to the week’s lunar cycle.

“The main factor is the tide level, high or low, and then if you have a supertide where it floods or it does the opposite where it completely flows out (and drains shallow targets),” said Kelley, who makes his home in Old Forge, Pa. “Both of those can happen in the spring. You can’t predict it that far in advance, so it’s all going to come down to a couple of days before the tournament.

“This tournament is right around a full moon (April 16), so sometimes, that does bring an extreme tide. But it could be a good thing. If the weather stays consistent, it’s setting up to be a really good tournament.”

Notwithstanding this anticipation, Kelley notes the variables of seasonal volatility.

“It’s the perfect time to be there; we’ve gotten into those early warmups, and I know they’ve had decent weather there,” Kelley said. “But anything could change this time of year — you could have heavy rains, you could have a fall-out tide, you could have a cold front. We experienced that last year, we had a major cold front and a major blow-out.”

Tournament week will begin warm and sunny with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. The forecast calls for increasing clouds, with showers Thursday afternoon and Friday morning ushering cooler temperatures.

Day 1 should remain warm, but Days 2 and 3 will dip into the mid- to upper 60s. Overnight lows will only fall into the upper 40s, so the cooldown shouldn’t impact the bite too much.

Typically, even a mild cooling trend can slow or stall spawning migrations, but as Kelley points out, river fish typically live close to where they’ll spawn. When it’s time to go, they’ll dash into the nearest firm-bottom area — sandy spots, cypress knees, gravel pits, etc. — so a relatively mild shot of cooler weather shouldn’t drastically affect their positioning.

The James River is certainly not devoid of traditional sight fishing opportunities, but the proximity between prespawn and spawning areas creates a lot of overlap. Visibility is often limited on tidal rivers, so anglers typically target likely areas with blind fishing techniques.

“You won’t have to do a whole lot different to catch spawners or prespawners,” Kelley said. “Fish could be bedding, but either you won’t see them, or you’re not going to know when you catch one. There may be pockets of clearer water or low enough water to sight fish, but you’ll (mostly) catch them while you’re fishing for prespawners.”

Delighting anglers, the James River abounds with bass-friendly habitat from laydowns, cypress trees, docks and duck blinds, to pads, river grass and barge pits. Throughout tournament waters, anglers will use a mix of reaction baits — bladed jigs, crankbaits, spinnerbaits and swim jigs — along with flipping and finesse techniques.

While competitive bags could come from anywhere in the James, the Chickahominy River — a major tributary downstream from takeoff — always hosts a good chunk of the tournament field. Brimming with natural cover, along with docks and the Walkers Dam, “The Chick” offers some of the area’s most picturesque bass habitat.

Elite Series veteran Brandon Palaniuk, who earned his first Bassmaster Opens win at last year’s James River event, spent his final day in the Chick. Targeting bass that were preying on jumbo river shad, Palaniuk threw big swimbaits near the Walkers Dam, about 22 miles upstream.

“Even though the Chickahominy gets pressure, it always pumps out Top 10 bags,” Kelley said. “There’s just no other place that has the amount of habitat, but it’s not the only place that has winning habitat.”

A key element of success on tidal fisheries is determining the bite windows — particular periods of the tide when fish feed best. Extending that thought, some will commit to a certain area and seek various bite windows throughout the day’s tides, while others will dial in a particular stage and then “run the tide” — moving up or downstream to replicate the desired scenarios in different locations.

“A lot of people do rely on that low tide bite, but in the spring it doesn’t matter as much as in the summer and the fall where the fish are being pushed out by a falling tide,” Kelley said. “In the springtime, they want to stay up shallow, so you can get bit throughout the entire tide cycle. You just have to note where you are when you get that bite.

“I’m not much of a run-the-tide person. I might do that in certain situations, but not in this event. I think it’s better to find a good area and fish it throughout the tide. A local who knows where they can get a bite here or there might run the tide, but if you don’t know the river, it can be risky.”

Kelley said he’s looking for about 56 pounds to win the event, with 16 a day making the Top 10. Tidal fisheries are notorious for delivering hero/zero reality checks, as an angler sacks up a big limit one day and bombs the next.

“I think it will come down to someone that might catch them one day doing something and the next day doing something a little different,” Kelley said. “Maybe they ran out of fish and got on something else because they had multiple areas. It might be something they didn’t get to the first day, but they got to the second day for another big bag.

“It’s all going to come down to little adjustments and who can change. It’s going to be about diversity and being willing and able to adapt to the conditions that are present.”

Visit Richmond and Henrico County, Va., are hosting the event.

Arkansas’ Edwards Claims Phoenix Bass Fishing League Win on Day 2 of Table Rock Lake Double-Header

Boater Landon Edwards of Springdale, Arkansas, and Strike-King co-angler Shane McGinnis of Springfield, Missouri.
KIMBERLING CITY, Mo. (April 4, 2022) – Boater Landon Edwards of Springdale, Arkansas, caught five bass Sunday weighing 19 pounds, 1 ounce, to win the MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League Presented by T-H Marine on Table Rock Lake . The tournament was the second event for the Bass Fishing League Ozark Division. Edwards earned $6,000 for his victory.

“I caught a lot of fish today,” said Edwards, who said he fished around Kimberling City and the James River. “I found bait, and where you found bait is where you found fish. I was just looking for birds diving for bait and then using my graph to find fish. I’d roll up on a school and start smashing them.”

Edwards said he caught 30 bass over three pounds during the course of the day and described the action as “insane.” He relied on a jerkbait, weighted with lead tape and wire on the hooks to get the bait down to the depths where fish were holding. A Rapala Jigging Shad Rap Ice and a small Keitech soft plastic bait filled his limit. He targeted bass in 100 feet of water that were suspended in depths from 10 to 60 feet.

“Wherever they were blowing holes in the baitfish is where I was catching them,” Edwards said. “I rolled up early to my spot where I knew they were loaded, made a cast and caught a 5-pounder, then caught a few more good ones. Then the sun came up and they got a little finicky. So I started throwing the little Keitech and hitting them in the face with it, and they just couldn’t resist it.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:        Landon Edwards, Springdale, Ark., five bass, 19-1, $6,000

Union Hall’s Nichols Tops Phoenix Bass Fishing League Field on Smith Mountain Lake

Boater Luke Nichols of Union Hall, Virginia, and Strike-King co-angler Ricky Grant of Callands, Virginia.
HUDDLESTON, Va. (April 4, 2022) – Boater Luke Nichols of Union Hall, Virginia, caught five bass Saturday weighing 24 pounds, 6 ounces, to win the MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League Presented by T-H Marine on Smith Mountain Lake . The tournament was the first event of the season for the Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division. Nichols earned $4,266 for his victory.

“I had fished weeks prior to the tournament, and this one just started out differently,” Nichols said. “I would fish in the morning and pull my boat out at noon because I knew what I wanted to do. I got on a deal on a jig that’s typical for the beginning to middle of March, but not this late in the year. But it’s been unusually cold, and the jig bite helped account for two key bites in the morning.”

Nichols said he focused on pre-spawn staging areas and used a Garmin Panoptix LiveScope System to locate and execute casts on specific targets the bass were holding on. Nichols said he caught his bass on green pumpkin jigs he learned to make with mentor and Bass Fishing League veteran Chris Dillow of Waynesboro, Virginia, who has seven Major League Fishing wins to his credit. The homemade jig, along with a swimbait, produced 10 keepers during the course of the day.

“I got a couple of big bites in the morning on the jig, and later in the day I got a few big bites on some key areas on the swimbait, but the bites were kind of scattered,” Nichols said. “The 7 pound, 11-ounce big bass of the day came at 2 o’clock. It was probably one of the most epic bites I’ve ever had in my life. I’ll never forget it. It was very aggressive and visual. I watched it attack the bait. My co-angler and I took a five-minute break after that and we said, ‘That’s one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen.’

“When it’s your day, it’s your day,” Nichols added. “I just feel blessed.  It was God-type stuff that took place out there.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:        Luke Nichols, Union Hall, Va., five bass, 24-6, $4,266
2nd:       Chris Brummett, Lynch Station, Va., five bass, 19-4, $2,483

4th:        Chad Green, Moneta, Va., five bass, 17-5, $879
5th:        Ben Hudson, Lynchburg, Va., four bass, 17-4, $753
6th:        Steven Coleman, Monroe, Va., five bass, 16-10, $690
7th:        Drew Sallada, Hurricane, W.Va., five bass, 16-8, $628
8th:        Jim Jarvis, Timberville, Va., five bass, 16-7, $565
9th:        Mickey Bergeron, Amherst, Va., five bass, 16-6, $502
10th:     Johnathan Crossland, Chapin, S.C., five bass, 16-0, $717

Louisiana’s Fleming Claims Phoenix Bass Fishing League Victory on Grenada Lake

Boater Dakota Fleming of Oak Grove, Louisiana, and Strike-King co-angler Thomas Sanderson of Amory, Mississippi.
GRENADA, Miss. (April 4, 2022) – Boater Dakota Fleming of Oak Grove, Louisiana, caught five bass Saturday weighing 14 pounds, 9 ounces, to win the MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League Presented by T-H Marine on Lake Grenada . The tournament, hosted by the Grenada Tourism Commission, was the third event for the Bass Fishing League Mississippi Division. Fleming earned $2,890 for his victory.

“I had planned on fishing close to takeoff to start off, but when I saw there were five boats that had turned in that direction, I ran down the lake to start on my best spot,” Fleming said. “I thought we could pick up a few on the way and then cull at my best spot.”

Fleming said he had found a point that bled into some spawning pockets during practice, and his second pitch of the day resulted in a 2½-pounder that fell for a black and blue Yum Christie Craw. After that, Fleming said he relocated and kept looking for fish, but always ended back up on the point that was producing.

“It kept reloading, and the fish kept getting bigger throughout the day,” Fleming said. “My last two fish were my biggest. I caught six of my seven keepers in a bush that had a floating tree above it. It wasn’t attached; it was going up and down with the waves. If you could pitch just under the tree – not in the bush – you’d get bit.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:        Dakota Fleming, Oak Grove, La., five bass, 14-9, $2,890
2nd:       Luke Glasgow, Guin, Ala., five bass, 13-15, $1,445
3rd:       Evan Horne, Tuscumbia, Ala., five bass, 11-14, $964
4th:        Will Dupler, Columbus, Miss., five bass, 11-3, $674
5th:        Rick Pullen, Houston, Miss., four bass, 10-14, $908

Jacksonville’s Hunt Wins Phoenix Bass Fishing League Event on Lake Okeechobee

[print_link]

CLEWISTON, Fla. (April 4, 2022) – Boater Stanley Hunt of Jacksonville, Florida, caught five bass Saturday weighing 23 pounds, 13 ounces, to win the MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League Presented by T-H Marine on Lake Okeechobee . The tournament was the fourth event for the Bass Fishing League Gator Division Presented by Revital Outdoors. Hunt earned $5,349 for his victory.

“What a great tournament,” Hunt said. “I caught fish all day long on a Heddon Zara Spook on the north end near Buckhead Ridge. I was just trying to stay in clean water near spawning flats where they had just finished spawning.”

Hunt said he targeted bass that were two feet deep with a white and yellow Spook, retrieved in a traditional fast walk-the-dog retrieve. Hunt said he caught 15 fish throughout the competition – all keepers – with the smallest one weighing 2 pounds.

“I found those fish earlier in the week when they were on beds,” Hunt said. “I went back in there on Thursday and picked up the Spook and started throwing it. The first fish I caught in there was a 6½-pounder, and then I caught a 5-pounder, and I said, ‘O.K. I’ve got to get out of here.’

“Saturday, we got there at 8 o’clock and stayed until 2 o’clock,” Hunt added. “When they hit the Spook it was explosive. And when they hit it, they were pulling drag right out of the gate.”

John Jones with a huge crappie caught at Smith Mountain Lake on March 15.

Fishing has been good the past few weeks. Numerous weather fronts have caused several changes in lake conditions. Water temperature has remained relatively low for this time of year. As the water starts to warm, the baitfish will continue to move into the shallow water. Most species of fish will start spawning this month.

Largemouth bass
Largemouth bass has been excellent for producing large bass this month. Most tournaments have taken a five fish limit of 20 pounds or more to win the past few weekends. Best lures are jigs, senkos, umbrella rigs and spinner baits. Most bass will be caught on secondary points shallow coves around stumps, docks and rocks. Best depths will be from 10 feet or less. As the water begins to clear, largemouth bass fishing will improve at night. Rip rap banks, stumps and shallow brush and docks are a key factor to finding them. Please practice catch and release when the bass are spawning.

Smallmouth bass
Fishing will improve this month. Best areas will be rocks, stumps, docks and secondary points. Best lures will be jigs, spinner baits, senkos, square-bill crank bank and topwater lures. Best areas will be in the mid- to the lower sections of the lake. Most smallmouth bass will start spawning later this month. Cloudy days are good times to try your luck. Light line will help to catch more fish.

Striped bass
Fishing will be good at night this month. Stripers will be caught in the mid- to lower sections of the lake and in the larger creeks. Due to recent heavy rains, the lake has lots of stained water which should make for good fishing as the water begins to clear. Best lures to use at night are shallow Thunder sticks, wake baits, swim baits and Zoom flukes fished on 1/4- to 3/8-ounce lead heads. The best depths will be from the surface to 30 feet. Try to find areas with the largest concentrations of baitfish. Night fishing will improve as the water temperature increases. Fishing at night later this month will be the best time to catch striper. Some schools of striper will start to surface toward the end of this month. Live bait fished on planer boards and down lines will work well this month. Trolling is also productive this month.

Crappie
Fishing for crappie has been good. Crappie will be spawning this month and will be found in shallow water. Best areas will be in the main creeks in the mid- to upper sections of both rivers around docks, fallen trees, stumps and brush piles. Small live minnows and 1½- to 2-inch tubes or shad-shaped plastic lures fished on 1/32- to 1/16-ounce lead heads will work best to catch them. Light line will increase the chances of a catch.
Tips of the month

Heavy rain, wind and stained water has slowed fishing, but it will improve as the water clears. Be aware of larger debris in the upper rivers and creeks when boating. Night will be one of the best times to catch fish in shallow water areas as the baitfish start to spawn. The fish will move to shallow areas to spawn because of the warmer water temperature. Wear a life jacket and never fish alone at night. Keep running lights on after dark. Remember to practice catch and release and take a kid fishing.
