Tennessee’s Jack Daniel Williams Earns Win at Toyota Series at Dale Hollow Lake

BYRDSTOWN, Tenn. (April 3, 2022) – Kingsport, Tennessee, boater Jack Daniel Williams brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday weighing 21 pounds, 13 ounces to win the Toyota Series Presented by A.R.E. at Dale Hollow Lake. Williams’ three-day total of 15 bass weighing 64-10 earned him the victory by a 1-pound, 13-ounce margin over second place boater Kevin Drake of Cleveland, Tennessee, and earned Williams the top payout of $71,500.

The three-day event, hosted by the Byrdstown-County Chamber of Commerce, was the second event of the season for the Toyota Series Central Division.

“I’m telling you I’m speechless, I really am. I don’t even know what to say. I think it will set in tomorrow, maybe when I drive out of here,” said Williams, laughing and adding, “I know that trophy is going to sleep in the bed with me for the next six weeks, I’m sure.”

Like most of the Top 25, forward-facing sonar and an abundance of bait were critical factors in Williams reaching the final day of competition. He noted that certain characteristics in his primary area along with changing weather conditions affected the movement of baitfish throughout the area.

“All my areas had points and steep drops on each side of them. The bait would load up on points when it got warm and drop off when it got cold into that deeper water.”

Williams targeted Dale Hollow’s schools of fish with a small 3½-inch swimbait rigged on a ¼-ounce jig head. He, like many others, made targeted casts aided by his sonar to specific single fish or pods of fish to initiate strikes.

“The warmer weather made the bait come up and that’s when I’d use a lighter head, with a slower fall to keep it in front of their face,” explained Williams.

While Williams was able to notch three bags eclipsing 21 pounds, it wasn’t easy by any stretch. Williams noted that the turning point of his was event was his late Day 2 flurry where he culled all five of his keeper fish to jump from roughly 13 pounds to 21-7. That put him in fourth and within striking distance on Day 3.

“It gave me the confidence going into the [final] day. I caught them late yesterday, and it gave me some confidence. I figured that they would still be there. So, I showed up today and caught a 4-pounder immediately.”

Williams’ area wasn’t on fire immediately after his early morning 4-pounder. But, after bouncing around to a few new areas, Williams was able to put a limit of fish in the boat before jumping his weight up soon thereafter by returning to his primary area.

“It seemed like I needed the wind to get up, so I left. I went and caught five, and then when I came back, I started culling.”

Still in shock at taking the top spot, Williams took a moment to reflect on what this meant for him in his young career.

“This is the dream come true. Every fisherman knows it’s not about the money. It’s about winning, and just loving the sport really,” he said. “And doing good. I just want to do good as a fisherman, that’s it. If I was to get beat with 21 pounds each day then so be it, hats off to them.”

Pro Blake Hall of Decatur, Alabama, won the $500 Day 1 Berkley Big Bass award in the pro division Thursday with a bass weighing 8 pounds, 4 ounces. Pat Eichmann of Nancy, Kentucky, earned Friday’s $500 Berkley Big Bass award with a 6-pound, 3-ouncer.

Drake took home an extra $1,000 as the highest finishing Phoenix MLF Bonus member. Boaters are eligible to win up to an extra $35,000 per event in each Toyota Series tournament if all requirements are met. Jeremy Bouldin of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, won the Strike King Co-angler Division Saturday with a three-day total of 13 bass weighing 35 pounds, 12 ounces. Bouldin took home the top prize package worth $41,000, including a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower Mercury outboard motor.

After two events in the Toyota Series Central Division, boater Derik Hudson of Concord, Virginia, leads the Toyota Series Central Division Pro Angler of the Year (AOY) race with 508 points, while Randy Wiggins of Birmingham, Alabama, leads the Strike King Co-Angler Division AOY race with 511 points.

Gallant Rallies To Win Bassmaster Southern Open At Cherokee Lake

Gallant Rallies To Win Bassmaster Southern Open At Cherokee Lake

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tenn. — Sticking with a deep bite for smallmouth bass, Cooper Gallant of Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, caught 18 pounds, 9 ounces on Championship Saturday and won the St. Croix Bassmaster Southern Open on Cherokee Lake presented by Mossy Oak Fishing.

He finished with a two-day total of 36-1.

The 24-year-old Gallant, who called the victory the biggest of his career so far, earned $52,533 and qualified for the 2023 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk.

“I’m thankful for the win and I couldn’t do it without my friends, family and the support from my sponsors,” Gallant said. “I’m excited for the Classic and excited to get on the road to the (next Open at) James River.”

Gallant, who is also attempting to qualify for the Bassmaster Elite Series, is now in seventh place in the Southern Open standings after two events.

“After Florida, I figured I would need a Top 20 in this one and another Top 20 on Hartwell in October,” he said. “To come into this one and actually win the thing, it sets me up really well for Hartwell. If I can get a Top 15 or 20 on Hartwell, I will have a good shot at making the Elites.”

With water temperatures cooler than expected, Gallant focused on deep rock structure between 15 and 30 feet of water where prespawn smallmouth were staging to move up into shallower spawning areas.

The best smallmouth he caught came from about 23 feet of water. With 20 spots to choose from, ranging from rock flats and rockpiles to boulders and main-lake points, he would move until he found a group of bass that were willing to bite.

He said could not see his bass on his Garmin LiveScope.

“I barely saw any bait this week where I was fishing,” he said. “They were hunkering down and waiting to move up. You wouldn’t see them on LiveScope. You just had to fish around and you would see them rise from the bottom. I would just fish where I thought they would be.”

Most of Gallant’s bass fell for an X-Zone Lures Hot Shot Minnow on either a drop shot or a Damiki rig. He would drop a bigger fluke rigged on a Damiki rig as well, but some of the bass would not commit to eating the larger profile and he would follow with the smaller Hot Shot Minnow.

The couple of bites he did get shallow were around pea gravel with a swimbait.

“If they weren’t eating right away I’d pretty well pull out of there and move to the next one,” he said. “Going into this week, I thought they were going to push shallow, but it ended up working out perfectly. I was able to catch them out deep and I feel comfortable out deep.”

After strong winds shortened the event to two days, Gallant landed in eighth place after Day 1 with 17-8. But he spent the last few hours of the day looking for new fish and found a spot that gave him the confidence to stick with the program for another day.

“For Day 1, I thought for sure I was going to have to switch things up and go shallow. But I dropped the trolling motor down and saw the (water temperature) was 52.5,” he said. “After Day 1, I said to myself ‘I’m staying out deep and I’m going to grind it out.’

“I knew I could catch another 15 to 16 pounds, I wasn’t sure I could catch 18. I knew I was around them but wasn’t positive I could make it happen.”

After leading Day 1 with 19-3, South Carolina pro Bryan New caught 16-1 to finish in second place with a two-day total of 35-4. Using mostly a Greenfish Tackle Bad Little Dude finesse jig with a Zoom Z-Craw Worm trailer, New targeted transition banks and shelf rock in the backs of pockets where both smallmouth and largemouth were staging, mixing in some brushpiles and offshore rockpiles as well.

“A Z-Craw is good for a big jig trailer, but when you are fishing a smaller, light-wire jig, it has a worm body and Z-Craw legs,” New said. “You cut it down, thread it on there and you aren’t taking away from the bite of your hook.

“You still have the profile, but you don’t have the bulk that gets in the way of your hook. I caught a lot of fish in the Classic on this same deal.”

New paired the jig with a 6-6 Medium Heavy Fitzgerald Jerkbait Rod, an Abu Garcia Revo STX and 14-pound Sunline Shooter. He also mixed in a big swimbait and a Spro Little John MD.

Canadian Jamie Bruce finished third with 34-7, catching 18-2 on Day 1 before landing 16-5 on Championship Saturday. In his first-ever tournament in the United States, he caught offshore smallmouth with a 3/8-ounce Bass Tactics Smeltinator Jig Head paired with a 5-inch Z-Man Jerk Shad.

He found the bass would rise further off the bottom to investigate the bigger bait.

“I fished as much steep structure as I could. I fished vertically over it,” Bruce said. “There were a lot of obvious boulders and humps and they were getting beat on. I would catch what I could and then go to these sneaky spots I found. They take forever to find. They are super steep ledges and you have to hang it over the ledge and you don’t know if there is a fish there until it shows itself.”

Alabama angler David Kilgore earned $750 for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the Tournament with a 5-11 largemouth he caught on Day 1.

Justin Baldridge of Greenup, Ky., won the co-angler division with a two-day total of 19-1. Tyler Carrick finished second with 18-15 and Keith Gunsauls finished third with 18-15. Frank Williams won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass on the co-angler side with a 5-3.

Arkansas pro Joey Cifuentes III and Tennessee pro Brandon Lester are tied for the lead in the overall Opens and Southern Opens point standings with 380 points, while New is third with 376.

New Targets Staging Bass To Grab Lead At Bassmaster Southern Open On Cherokee Lake

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tenn. — Using several different techniques, South Carolina pro Bryan New caught a mixed bag of largemouth and smallmouth weighing 19 pounds, 3 ounces to lead the St. Croix Bassmaster Southern Open at Cherokee Lake presented by Mossy Oak Fishing.

The current Bassmaster Elite Series pro holds a slim advantage over second-place pro Shane Lineberger and third-place angler Frank Ramsey.

“It looks like I smashed them, but I didn’t,” New said. “I think I caught seven bass and lost two. It was one of those grinder days. This place had so much pressure this week and it is hard to run one deal. You have to do a little of this and a little of that.

“This place isn’t that big and 225 boats in one week changes things.”

With high winds and severe storms moving through East Tennessee on Thursday, Day 1 of the event was postponed, pushing the start to Friday morning and shortening the tournament to two days. In New’s mind, the delay helped the fishery tremendously.

When action finally began, 141 boaters landed limits Friday.

“I’ll argue with anyone, an off day in every tournament makes the fishing better,” New said. “They smashed them today. If we didn’t have that off day, basically a day and a half off, we would have caught some but it wouldn’t have been like this.”

This is only New’s second trip to Cherokee, but he is using his past experience on the Tennessee River to predict where the bass will be staging. With water levels on the lake dropping the past couple of weeks, New anticipated the bass wouldn’t be spawning yet.

“It is 13, 14 feet low now. I was thinking they should be stacked up on the staging stuff,” he said. “I figured the Damiki deal would still be going on — and it is, but there is only so much of the staging stuff and it is getting pounded. I was fortunate to catch four big ones and one good one.”

Cooler nights prevailed in practice, which didn’t allow the water temperatures to rise much. On tournament day, New noticed temperatures started in the low 50s, but rose throughout the day to about 58 degrees.

“The sun is important,” New said. “Not only does it warm the water up, but it positions the fish better. It makes them easier to catch.”

New has found that the smallmouth and largemouth are mostly in the same areas, but there are differences that will attract a smallmouth to an area more than a largemouth and vice versa. He ended Day 1 with four largemouth and one smallmouth.

The day started quickly for New, who landed his first bass on a Greenfish Tackle Bad Little Dude jig. From there, he landed a 2 1/2 and a 3 1/2 on a Spro Little John MD before landing his biggest bass, a 5-pounder, on a completely different bait. Two key culls late in the day, including one on the Bad Little Dude with minutes to spare before check-in, lifted him up the leaderboard.

Lineberger landed all largemouth on his way to 18-11. The North Carolina angler did not have a keeper at 9 a.m., but he decided to make a change mid-morning — something he likes to do on his home waters of Lake Norman — and the pattern he discovered lasted the rest of the day.

“I picked up a bait I throw at home this time of year and started doing things I do around the house,” Lineberger said. “The first place I fished I caught three and I ran the pattern from there. It held up until I quit running it.

“I caught a couple 2 1/2s that I threw back, and when I did that I quit running it. I may need those bass tomorrow.”

While Lineberger caught several smallmouth in practice, he had not been able to find them consistently. Even with his largemouth program, Lineberger anticipated he might only be able to catch 10 or 12 pounds.

“Sometimes the Good Lord smiles on you,” he said. “I had two that were around 4 1/4. They were all solid fish and that is what you have to have here. You can’t go out there and win on just smallmouth. I think you have to mix it up.

“Tomorrow I may have to do that. There is no holding back tomorrow and I can whack whatever bites.”

With a mixed bag, Ramsey ended Day 1 in third place with 18-5. The Illinois angler started the day by targeting brushpiles and landed two keepers quickly. Although the bite slowed from there, he filled a limit once the sun fully rose.

Most of his damage was done on one bank where he caught 10 keepers and made five or six key culls with both species.

“It was a grind waiting for the sun to come out,” he said. “Once the sun came out, it was all about moving baits, slow rolling and taking your time in prespawn areas and classic staging areas. Steep banks played a key role.”

Alabama pro David Kilgore landed the Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the Day, a 5-11 largemouth that helped him land in sixth place.

Mitch Mitchell of Georgia leads the nonboater standings with a three-bass limit weighing 12-3. Mike McKinney is second with 11-6, followed by Herschel Brady with 11-0. Gerald Robbins Jr. holds the Big Bass of the Day on the co-angler side with a 5-1.

The full field of pros and co-anglers will compete on Championship Saturday. Anglers will take off at 7 a.m. ET from the Cherokee TVA Dam Boat Launch and return for weigh-in starting at 3 p.m.

MLF’s Bass Pro Tour All-Star Event to Showcase 32 Top Pro Anglers Targeting Big Bass Over Six Days for Huge Payouts and Daily Big Bass Bonuses of Up to $100K

TYLER, Texas (April 1, 2022) – Major League Fishing (MLF), the world’s largest tournament fishing organization, is set to return to Texas next week, April 9-14, for the third-annual General Tire Heavy Hitters at Lake Palestine . The all-star event will showcase the 32 pros that qualified from the 2021 Bass Pro Tour season competing in a no-entry-fee tournament for a purse of more than $500,000, with a top prize of $100,000 to the winner along with Big Bass Bonuses during the competition that pay out $25,000, $50,000, and $100,000 to the single biggest fish in the Qualifying, Knockout and Championship rounds.

To qualify for the General Tire Heavy Hitters 2022 event, the weight of an angler’s single-largest bass from each event of the seven 2021 Bass Pro Tour events was recorded. The 32 anglers with the heaviest five big-fish totals from those seven events qualified to compete in this event.

This event will mark the first time that MLF has ever visited Lake Palestine for an event featuring the catch-weigh-immediate release-format.

“This lake has been on the “quiet” upswing for probably the last 5 to 7 years,” said MLF Director of Event Research and Program Analyst Marty Stone. “This is a ‘kiss and don’t tell anyone’ lake in Texas. The local anglers know how good it is, it just hasn’t had big enough boat ramps and hotel infrastructure to support a national trail. But it will be perfect for this General Tire Heavy Hitters event and I know we’re getting ready to see some tanks.

“I know of at least one 13-pounder that has come out of there this year,” Stone continued. “I think it will take a 9+ pounder every day to win the big fish awards, and I think we will see several in the 10+ range. If we were here a month earlier, I would predict Randy Howell’s record for the largest fish ever caught in Bass Pro Tour competition would likely be broken.”

One Bass Pro Tour angler who will not be competing in this event is local pro Jeff Sprague of Wills Point, Texas. Sprague was the big winner of last year’s General Tire Heavy Hitters 2021 event as he caught the Championship Round Big Bass and earned the $100,000 top prize. The local pro is extremely disappointed that he was unable to qualify for this year’s event but knows that the anglers on the water are in for a special treat.

“Lake Palestine is a hidden jewel in East Texas,” Sprague said. “I’ve been very fortunate to grow up fishing it and it kills me that I’m not going to be a part of this event. This one is going to really impress anyone who watches. We’re going to see a lot of scorable bass caught weighing 5 pounds plus, and quite a few 8- and 9-pounders.

“The only downside that we might see is that the lake is facing a tremendous amount of pressure over these next few weeks – it is absolutely the prime time to be fishing Lake Palestine,” Sprague continued. “It’s known for kicking out mega-bags this time of year, and I know that the guys fishing in Heavy Hitters are going to have an amazing event. “

When asked about the excitement surrounding the Big Bass Awards, Sprague said the opportunity to earn $100,000 from one fish doesn’t come around often.

“It’s not very often that anyone, anywhere gets to fish for that kind of money for just one bite,” Sprague said. “To pull it out last year, was so incredible. A single fish worth $100,000 is a once in a lifetime catch.”

Anglers will launch each day at 7:30 a.m. from the Villages Marina, located at Big Eddy Road in Flint, Texas. Each day’s General Tire Takeout will be held at the Marina, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Fans are welcome to attend all launch and takeout events and also encouraged to follow the event online throughout the day on the MLF NOW!® live stream and SCORETRACKER® coverage at MajorLeagueFishing.com.

The General Tire Heavy Hitters 2022 will feature anglers competing with a 2-pound minimum weight requirement for a bass to be deemed scorable in the Qualifying and Knockout Rounds, but for the final day Championship Round a bass must weigh at least 3 pounds to be deemed scorable. Minimum weights are determined individually for each competition waters that the Bass Pro Tour visits, based on the productivity, bass population and anticipated average size of fish in each fishery.

The 16 Anglers in Group A compete in their two-day qualifying round on Saturday and Monday – the 16 anglers in Group B on Sunday and Tuesday. After each two-day qualifying round is complete, the anglers that finish in 2nd through 8th place from both groups advance to Wednesday’s Knockout Round, while the winner of each group advances directly to Thursday’s Championship Round. In the Knockout Round, weights are zeroed and the remaining 14 anglers compete to finish in the top 8 to advance to the Championship Round. In the final day Championship Round, weights are zeroed and the highest one-day total wins. In addition to the tournament, Big Bass Bonuses are awarded in each round of competition with payouts of $25,000, $50,000 and $100,000 awarded to the single biggest fish in the Qualifying, Knockout and Championship rounds.

Daiwa DF18000 features structural and cosmetic facelift

Cypress, CA (March 31, 2022) – The all-new Daiwa DF18000 is an improvement on the heavy-action spinning reel popular with so many jetty and surf anglers as well as diehard catfish fishermen. It’s a no-nonsense workhorse designed to sink barbs and simply catch fish. “Anyone in the market looking for a great value priced reel for saltwater species or that require a large capacity of line, this reel is perfect coming in at $59.99,” says Senior Marketing Manager, Marc Mills. “

The Daiwa DF18000 features all-new cosmetics and a new rubber touch handle. It also features a stainless-steel main shaft, fully anodized corrosion resistant frame, and 3.4 gear ratio. The weight is close to 30-ounces, and it has a fairly high retrieve thanks to the diameter of the big spool. It holds a good deal of line with 39.4 inches per crank. Its monofilament capacity is an astounding 460 yards of 20-pound test and 320 yards of 30-pound test; for J-Braid, the spool holds 600 yards of 50-pound test and 450 yards of 65-pound test. Maximum drag is 33 pounds.
