Gallant Takes Over Lead In Bassmaster Open At 1000 Islands

Cooper Gallant, of Bowmanville, Canada, is leading after Day 2 of the 2021 Basspro.com Bassmaster Northern Open at the St. Lawrence River/1000 Islands with a two-day total of 52 pounds, 2 ounces.

Gallant Takes Over Lead In Bassmaster Open At 1000 Islands

CLAYTON, N.Y. — Cooper Gallant’s Day 2 limit of 25 pounds, 2 ounces was right about where his practice results indicated he’d be, but an unexpected Day 1 bonus positioned him to take the Day 2 lead of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Northern Open at the St. Lawrence River/1000 Islands.

Placing second on Day 1 with 27 pounds — 7 ounces behind first-round leader Cal Climpson — Gallant said he was surprised at that weight because he came into the tournament targeting the 25-pound mark. Topping the field with a two-day total of  52-2, the Bowmanville, Canada, pro enters Championship Saturday with a 1 1/2-pound lead over Bassmaster Elite angler Cory Johnston, who sits in second with 50-10.

“I had a pretty good bag today, but I didn’t see any of the big, big, big ones like those 6-pounders you’d like to have,” Gallant said. “If you can catch five 5s, you’ll be sitting pretty good.

“I ended up culling about four times and I had about 10 fish all day. I’m not getting many bites, but they’re the right ones.”

Gallant spent his day in Lake Ontario, not far from the mouth of the river. There he fished a drop shot with an unnamed bait over rocky bottom with isolated boulders on the Canadian side.

“The bigger fish are getting on the noticeably bigger boulders and then you also have big ones cruising the whole flat,” Gallant said. “I found when it’s calm and the sun’s out, they get on the boulders really good.

“From what I’ve seen, when the wind’s blowing, they’ve been pulling off of them. You just have to drift and find them. I think they feel protected sitting on those boulders.”

After Thursday’s huge catch, Gallant commented that he was concerned he had caught most of his spot’s potential.

“I knew there was still fish around there, but I didn’t know if I could catch five,” he said. “I thought I could catch one or two but I ended up camping out all day on what I fished yesterday.

“Tomorrow I’m going to switch it up. I pounded that area pretty good the last two days and we’re going to gamble and hopefully come in with another 25 pounds.”

Two months ago, Johnston finished fourth in the Farmers Insurance Bassmaster Elite event on the St. Lawrence. This week, the Canadian pro has been consistent with daily limits of 25-7 and 25-3

“I ran similar stuff as I did yesterday; I started in the river and worked my way out to the lake and caught fish all day,” Johnston said. “I worked little subtleties in the (rock structure) in about 40 feet and caught them on a drop shot with a prototype Spro worm.

“The fish are definitely moving (with the cooling weather). They’ll probably be gone tomorrow and I’ll have to find new fish.”

Climpson slipped to third with 49-14. After starting with the event’s heaviest bag — 27-7 — the Cavan, Canada angler added 22-7. Day 2, he said, required much more of a search effort.

“I had to run quite a bit of spots,” Climpson said. “Today, it wasn’t so much that the fish left; I just lost a few key fish. I didn’t relocate today, I just kept running a couple of the spots where I’d found them in practice and I just ran into them. I only fished two new spots that I didn’t fish yesterday.”

Targeting rocky bottom and boulders in 20-30 feet, Climpson again caught his fish on a drop shot with a 3/4-ounce weight. On Thursday, he rotated through three different baits. Today, he had to increase his selection to five.

“They’re getting picky for sure,” Climpson said. “I probably dropped down on a dozen fish that wouldn’t bite today.”

Andrew Upshaw of Hemphill, Texas, leads the Phoenix Boats Big Bass standings with a 6-13.

Zack Eggleston of Goleta, Calif., highlighted his summer visit with Upstate New York relatives by winning the co-angler division with 33-6. After placing third on Day 1 with 15-2, he added an eye-popping 3-fish limit of 18-4.

Eggleston caught one of his keepers on a drop shot with a 4-inch Big Hammer Baits Salt Shaker worm and a 3/8-ounce weight, but most of his fish ate his homemade 3/32-ounce black hair jig. Eggleston added a piece of stick worm to the jig’s hook shank to bulk up the body.

“I think they like the hair jig because it’s very subtle in the water; it’s not intrusive,” he said. “They’ll follow it but then they’ll come up and eat it. It’s something you can swim and cover water with. There are so many little bugs that get washed around down there; it’s just like candy to them that they can’t pass up.”

Eggleston tied Mathew Mccarthy of Marysville, Ohio, for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers. Both caught fish weighing 6-12.

Jonathan Kelley of Old Forge, Pa., leads the Northern Open points standings with 554. Mike Iaconelli of Pitts Grove, N.J., is in second with 549, followed by Alex Redwine of Blue Ash, Ohio who is tied for second with 549, J.T. Thompkins of Myrtle Beach, S.C., is in fourth with 520 and Gallant is in fifth with 515

Jacob Powroznik of North Prince George, Va., leads the overall Falcon Rods Bassmaster Opens Angler of the Year points standings with 1,029.

Saturday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. ET at the Antique Boat Museum. The weigh-in will be held at the museum at 2:30 p.m.

Live coverage of the event can be streamed on Bassmaster.com and the FOX Sports digital platforms. FS1 will also broadcast live with the tournament leaders from 8-11 a.m.

1000 Islands Clayton Chamber of Commerce and the Antique Boat Museum are hosting the event.

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (Sept. 10, 2021) – Pro “The Real Deal” Michael Neal of Dayton, Tennessee, caught 36 bass totaling 120 pounds, 13 ounces, to grab the early lead for Group A on Day 1 of the CarParts.com Stage Seven at Lake St. Clair Presented by Covercraft Friday in St. Clair Shores, Michigan.

The six-day event, hosted by Macomb County, St. Clair Shores and the Detroit Sports Commission, showcases the 80 top professional bass-fishing anglers on the planet competing for a purse of $805,000, including a top cash prize of $100,000 to the winner. The tournament is livestreamed each day at MajorLeagueFishing.com and the MOTV app and also being filmed for broadcast later this fall on the Discovery Channel.

Neal will bring a 18-pound, 9-ounce, lead into Sunday’s second day of competition for Group A. In second place on the SCORETRACKER® leaderboard is the red-hot Academy Sports + Outdoors pro Jacob Wheeler of Harrison, Tennessee, who caught 39 bass totaling 102-4. B&W Trailer Hitches pro Russ Lane of Prattville, Alabama, sits in third place – 1-ounce behind Wheeler – with 33 bass weighing 102-3. Kalamazoo’s Kevin VanDam caught 13 bass weighing 36-12 and sits in 18th place.

The 40 anglers in Group A will now have the day off on Saturday, while the 39 anglers competing in Group B will begin their first day of competition. Group A will resume competition on Sunday.

“It was a heck of a day. It’ll be interesting to see if I can get back our here on Sunday or not,” Neal said, pondering the weather forecast. “If I can’t, I’m going to have to try to come up with a different plan to try to win the round.”

Neal spent pretty much his entire day fishing the same general area – a spot that he described as a big grass flat with a few irregularities – using multiple different baits and techniques. In Period 1, Neal relied on a drop-shot rig and boated six bass. In Period 2, he mixed a jerkbait into his repertoire and along with the drop-shot added another 10 scorable bass. In Period 3, Neal caught fire with a medium-diving crankbait and another 20 scorable bass in the period.

“Whenever it is calm enough to fish, I’m all in on the area that I fished today,” Neal added. “There are tons of fish there, but I don’t know how long they’ll stay, or if the wind will move them or what. We’ll have to see what happens. Regardless, today has been a really fun day.”

Straight off of his two back-to-back Bass Pro Tour victories, second-place pro Jacob Wheeler maintained his historic pace and had another great day on the water Friday.

“It was another incredible day,” Wheeler said. “I stayed on them all day long. It was great to have another 100-pound day, but we’ve still got a lot of work left ahead of us. It’s a solid start, though. And I’ve got a chance to win the round, and that’s really all that you can ask for after Day 1.”

The top 20 pros in Group A after Day 1 on Lake St. Clair are:

1st:          Michael Neal, Dayton, Tenn., 36 bass, 120-13
2nd:         Jacob Wheeler, Harrison, Tenn., 39 bass, 102-4

The 40 Anglers in Group A compete in their two-day qualifying round on Lake St. Clair on Friday and Sunday – the 40 anglers in Group B on Saturday and Monday. After each two-day qualifying round is complete, the anglers that finish in 2nd through 20th place from both groups advance to Tuesday’s Knockout Round, while the winner of each group advances directly to Wednesday’s Championship Round. In the Knockout Round, weights are zeroed and the remaining 38 anglers compete to finish in the top 8 to advance to the Championship Round. In the final day Championship Round, weights are zeroed and the highest one-day total wins the top prize of $100,000.

Anglers will take off from the 9-Mile Ramp, located in St. Clair Shores, at 8 a.m. ET each day of competition. With strong winds being forecast for Saturday, Bass Pro Tour Tournament Director Aaron Beshears has decided to allow tournament competitors to trailer their boats. Anglers must remain at the 9-Mile Boat Ramp until 8 a.m. and then will be allowed to depart to the desired launch ramp of their choosing.

Celebrating a Life of Service

Career Military Veteran, NYC First Responder, and American Hero, William “Bill” Hayes, Recognized in Special 9/11 Edition of Operation Outdoor Freedom TV

BARTLETT, Ill. (September 10, 2021) – Americans over the age of 25 or so recall exactly where they were and what they were doing when the first, loosely reported accounts of September 11, 2001 began circulating. As details firmed up and the horrifying images of the terror attack were broadcasted – along with the heroic actions of NYC and U.S. Military first responders – life and time both seemed to stop.

As most Americans watched their television screens in disbelief from afar, thousands of others were right there at Ground Zero. In the moments, days, and weeks following the attacks, these brave and selfless first responders fought the chaos in any way they could, doing anything and everything in their power to attenuate the pain, suffering, and heartbreak associated with what would become the loss of nearly 3,000 American lives and physical injuries to some 6,000 more.

William (Bill) Hayes is one of those people. His 31 years in the U.S. Military and 24 years as a FDNY firefighter represent a remarkable commitment and life of service to our nation.

Hayes was born in New York City and grew up in New Jersey as the son of a FDNY firefighter. Following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy in April of 1980 at the age of 17. While assigned to VS-37 (S3 Anti-Submarine Squadron) at the Naval Air Station in North Island, California, he made a WESTPAC Cruise onboard the USS Enterprise (CVN-65). Upon his honorable discharged from active duty, he immediately enlisted in the United States Naval Reserves at the Naval Air Station in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, where he was assigned to VR-52 (C9 Airlift Squadron).

In January of 1986, Hayes was appointed to the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and briefly served as a New York City Police Officer until July 1987, when he was appointed to the New York City Fire Department. As a member of the FDNY, Hayes would participate in countless missions to preserve the lives and livelihoods of New York City residents, including search and rescue operations during and after both World Trade Center attacks on February 26, 1993, and September 11, 2001.

Upon his Honorable Discharge from the Naval Reserves in 1990, Hayes enlisted in the New York Air National Guard and was assigned as a Traditional Guardsman to the 105th Air Lift Wing (C5 Squadron) at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburg, New York. On October 19, 2001, he was ordered to active duty in support of Operation Noble Eagle and deployed back to the World Trade Center in New York City. On November 1, 2006, he was ordered to active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 105th Air Lift Wing. In 2007, Hayes was deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. On April 30, 2012, he completed his active duty tour and returned to work at the FDNY.

After sustaining a severe back injury and contracting cancer while serving on both active military duty and as a firefighter, Hayes retired from the FDNY in May of 2011 after 24 years of service. In December, 2011, he retired from the New York Air National Guard as a Senior Master Sergeant (E8) with 31 years of military service.

In the years since his retirement, Bill Hayes has beaten his cancer, and his service has not ceased. He has volunteered with numerous Veterans nonprofit organization at both the local and national levels, including Project Healing Waters and the VFW, among others. “We started a VFW post in the FDNY in 2005. I’ve been an active member since its inception and a Commander for the past six years,” Hayes says. “It’s a very special community. Almost 1000 members of the FDNY have been activated and deployed in the U.S. Military. We’ve lost 47 of them; four since 9/11. We fight on all fronts for Veteran’s benefits and do whatever we can to provide support and healing for our military families.”

Like most U.S. Veterans and first responders, Hayes never set out to be a hero or receive any special recognition. “I was just 17 years old when I enlisted, so my father had to co-sign me. It was during the Iranian hostage crisis,” Hayes recalls. “I took the test for the Fire Department when I was in the Navy. My father was a New York firefighter and I just always wanted to be part of something that helped people. Service of others and to our country is my whole life, and that’s why I just kept re-enlisting in the reserves. Besides being a father, being able to serve in the military, as a police officer, and a as a firefighter is what I’m most proud of.”

The Operation Outdoor Freedom Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the lives of our U.S. Military Veterans. Its varied and wide-reaching initiatives and partnerships include Take a Vet Fishing, The Sparta Project, the Yontz Valor Foundation, Stellate Ganglion Block Treatment, TRP Therapy, and the Operation Outdoor Freedom Presented by Great Clips television show, which documents the lives of our American Heroes through their own voices.

“Bill Hayes is an incredible individual who has selflessly served our country in multiple capacities throughout his life, and his meaningful efforts are still ongoing,” says Operation Outdoor Freedom Foundation co-founder, Jay Garstecki. “The 20th anniversary of 9/11 is going to be a challenging day for Bill and people like him who were there amidst the horrors at Ground Zero, digging through the rubble with their bare hands. We’re humbled to be able to offer rise to Bill’s voice and story in a special episode of our TV show, which will air in the spring of 2022.”

Hayes will be busy on and around September 11 this year, honoring and remembering his fallen brothers and sisters from 9/11 at a variety of memorial services and other gatherings. “FDNY has a memorial that’s been in Manhattan for some 200 years,” Hayes says. “I will be there on September 11th this year, just as I have been in past years, with over 5,000 other firefighters from New York and around the country. My daughter will be there with me. She was only 9 years old in 2001 and was removed from school after the attacks happened, because neither she nor her school knew if I was alive or dead. We’ll have appropriate moments of silence at all of the historical times when numbers of Americans lost their lives. We’ll read the 343 names of the New York firefighters who died and take time to remember each of them individually. People are calling this an anniversary, but it’s not a celebration. It’s going to be a very difficult day.”

Join the nation in hearing Bill Hayes’ story when this special 9/11 edition of Operation Outdoor Freedom airs next spring. Check local listings for stations and times.

Climpson Takes Lead In Bassmaster Northern Open At 1000 Islands

Cal Climpson, of Cavan, Canada, is leading after Day 1 of the 2021 Basspro.com Bassmaster Northern Open at the St. Lawrence River/1000 Islands with 27 pounds, 7 ounces.

Climpson Takes Lead In Bassmaster Northern Open At 1000 Islands

[print_link]

CLAYTON, N.Y. — Fall’s seasonal transition took a big chunk out of Cal Climpson’s practice findings, but the Canadian pro located enough quality to assemble a limit catch of 27 pounds, 7 ounces to lead Day 1 of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Northern Open at the St. Lawrence River/1000 Islands.

The recent arrival of cooler weather and big winds have cracked the whip on large schools of smallmouth that had been lounging in deep water. With schools fragmenting and scattered fish starting to push shallower, consistency has become challenging.

“I had quite a bit of fish located in practice, but a lot of my spots were dry today, so I had to work really hard to get that weight,” Climpson said. “I wish I knew where they moved to. The fish that I caught were ones that stuck around in the same depths as they were in practice.

“This is classic September; the fish are in all depths right now. The water temperature has dropped 7 to 8 degrees in the last week and a half, and the fish are not as grouped up as they were in August.”

Knowing that Lake Ontario has historically produced a higher quality of fish than the St. Lawrence — river fish burn more calories in the higher current — Climpson began his day in the big water.

“I snuck out into the lake, but then it started getting rough, so I ended up in the river around noon,” Climpson said. “What I caught was about fifty-fifty between the lake and the river.”

For his Lake Ontario work, Climpson ran about 7 miles out and targeted an area of rock and transition bottom (rock to gravel) in 25 to 35 feet. Noting that large, isolated boulders were the key spots, Climpson said his Garmin LiveScope played a key role in his success.

“I’d be casting around until I saw one and then I’d start targeting it,” he said. “I was able to catch a couple of fish that I saw on LiveScope.

“When it was calmer this morning, I was using the trolling motor to try and cover some water, but once the wind picked up, I just let it (propel my drift).”

Climpson said he found that the fish were on the move, even within the spot he fished. To counter this, he made measured drifts that worked progressively across the hard bottom. Drifts that yielded a catch earned a follow-up pass.

Back in the St. Lawrence River, Climpson caught fish with a similar game plan.

Anchoring his bag with the 6-9 he caught in the lake, Climpson said he tried a variety of baits, but caught all of his fish on a drop shot. While keeping his bait particulars guarded, Climpson said he used a 3/4-ounce weight to keep his drop shot on target in rough water.

“I actually caught fish on three different drop-shot baits,” Climpson said. “I just rotated through the baits if I didn’t get bit.”

Cooper Gallant of Bowmanville, Canada, is in second place with 27-0. Committing his day to Lake Ontario, Gallant fished a long point using a drop shot to target several key areas in depths of 7 to 30 feet.

“I had (most of) my weight by 10 and then I upgraded once around 1 o’clock,” Gallant said. “Then I just went looking the rest of the day.

“I knew I was on a 25-pound bag in practice and I knew 27 was possible. Honestly, today I thought I had 25. I didn’t even weigh them. I just like to throw them in the livewell and surprise myself at the end of the day.”

Gary Adkins of Green Bay, Wis., is in third place with 25-10. Spending his day in the lake, Atkins said that carefully controlling his drift speed for natural presentations was essential to his success. He also benefited from a change in conditions.

“I caught my biggest fish — a 5-7 — around 1 o’clock,” Adkins said. “Actually, once the wind picked back up, the bite got better because of more current. I’m on a structure that needs current and when that current blows up on there, the fish move up to feed.”

Sharing the third-place spot is Kevin Park of Waymart, Pa.

Climpson, Brock Belik of Orchard, Neb., and Chris Hellebuyck of Waterford, Mich., share the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors. Each angler caught a 6-9 smallmouth.

Sakae Ushio of Tonawanda, N.Y., leads the co-angler division with 15-3. Matthew Mccarthy of Marysville, Ohio, holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with a 6-12.

Jonathan Kelley of Old Forge, Pa., leads the Bassmaster Northern Open standings with 551 points. Alex Redwine of Blue Ash, Ohio, is second with 545, followed by Spike Stoker of Cisco, Texas, with 533, Michael Iaconelli of Pitts Grove, N.J., with 527 and Hugh Cosculluela of Spring, Texas, with 522.

Jacob Powroznik of North Prince George, Va., leads the overall Falcons Rods Bassmaster Opens Angler of the Year standings with 977 points.

Legacy of Fishing, Family and Fantastic Finishes

Northland Founder, John Peterson, and great-nephew, Jace Peterson take first; brothers Travis and Craig Peterson take third

BEMIDJI, Minn. (September 9, 2021) – The International Falls Bass Championship (IFBC) is a fabled bass fishing event on Rainy Lake and Rainy River, Minnesota. With great smallmouth bass fishing on the lake and river, the intent of the tournament is to showcase what phenomenal opportunities the borderland has to offer. With more than $30,000 in prize money and three days of events and excitement for the whole family, competitors look forward to the tournament each year. The IFBC format features two person teams fishing for two days with the total combined weight of smallmouth bass caught.

Among those who look forward to the tournament each year is the Peterson family, including John Peterson, and his boat partner and great-nephew Jace Peterson, and John’s nephews, brothers Travis and Craig Peterson.

At the end of two days on the water the patriarch Peterson and Jace took home a humungous trophy and $10,000 for the win with 43.98 pounds of smallmouth bass. Bill Godin and Leroy Wilson took second with 42.24 pounds and brothers Travis and Craig Peterson placed third with 41.13 pounds. It’s worthwhile to note, too, that these are second titles for John and Jace, although with different partners. Jace and his dad Travis won in 2015, while John and his brother Duane took the crown in 2012. That’s a whole lotta Petersons on the podium…

Available in two sizes, Bagley’s Knocker B is perennial smallmouth bass producer.

“John spends a lot of his summer on Rainy Lake,” said Jace Peterson. “He’ll look at the weather and if it’s nice, head up from Bemidji and fish for three or four days. We went up the Sunday before the tournament, giving us five days of prefishing before the event.”

He continued: “We had a decent practice, already having a pretty good idea about what we wanted to do. There were a couple days when we’d pull up on a spot and catch one big one, but because we were practicing, get out of there right away. So, we never really knew the potential of the spots. For the most part, it was a good practice.”

“First thing we did was check the shallows to see if there were still fish around the islands and points. We hooked a few fish in these areas on Bagley topwaters, tubes and Ned Rigs, but focused most of our fishing on mid-depth humps from 6 to 15 feet. The smallmouth were relating to baitfish versus crawfish, almost in their fall patterns, which I think was because of this year’s low water. And with the hot summer and water temps between 75 and 78 degrees, I think it was just too much for the fish to handle and they moved deeper.”

Travis Peterson

In terms of presentations, with a baitfish feed going on, the Petersons found IMPULSE Smelt Minnows on a Northland Mimic Minnow or Thumper Jig ideal for the bite, especially in deeper water.

While practice fishing might have been good, teams hadn’t anticipated the severe weather on Day One of the event with 20 to 25 mph winds.

“Day One was probably the worst weather conditions I’ve ever fished in,” said Jace. “We got beat up all day long, taking 30 to 40 waves over the bow. We stayed close on one of our areas because traveling conditions were so poor. But we had a nice limit by noon with 16 or 17 pounds and were happy with that. Just getting through the day was a challenge. Toward the end of the day John got on a roll and caught two four and half pounders back-to-back. That put us over the edge with a weight of 21 and a quarter. We had about an hour left to fish and made the call to go in early rather than taking the chance of breaking down.”

There was a considerable weather change on Day Two with significantly decreased winds and cloudy skies.

Then, toward the end of the day, the duo made one crucial move and caught four big fish that pretty much culled out their entire livewell.

“We caught a four and half and John caught one that was close to five pounds, and I caught another four and a half and everything clicked like it was meant to be. I was culling and our scale read total weight of 22 pounds. We were both in shock. That was easily the best day of smallmouth bass fishing both of us had ever had and that says a lot—John’s fished Erie, Mille Lacs, Sturgeon Bay, you-name-it. We were confident going into weigh-in. We talked to my dad and uncle Craig and they were sitting in third after Day Two. They told us they had about 20 pounds, so we knew that we were sitting close to first,” said Jace.

Jace and John finished with 43.98 while Jace’s dad and uncle weighed 41.13. Again, the duo of Jace and John ended up with a $10,000 check for first.

Jace sums up the feelings of pulling off the IFBC and being part of such an historical fishing-focused family. “I’ve been working toward winning a tournament like this for the past ten plus years. Lots of time on the water, long days, all that, so to win this one on the Rainy Lake system is a dream come true. To do it with my great-uncle, John, is even more spectacular, while my dad and uncle Craig took third in another boat.”

Travis and Craig Peterson

Jace added: “It’s been a great experience growing up in the Northland Fishing Tackle family. Going back to kindergarten and first grade, we’d go to school and grandpa, or my great-uncle John would pick us up after school and take us to the Northland office.”

“One of my best memories as a kid was instead of having birthday parties at a roller rink or waterpark, we’d have them in the breakroom at Northland. All the kids got goodie bags of fishing tackle and we got to walk around the back and pick lures out from the bins. It’s always been a part of my life, and now that I’m older we fish together as a family all the time. I spend a lot of time on the water with my cousin Charlie Peterson who works at Northland, as well as my dad, uncle Craig, grandpa, and great uncle John. John and my grandpa have fished the International Falls Tournament since its beginning, and this is the 17th year. I’ve been there with them pre-fishing the past ten years or more. We’ve always had a close relationship.”

Once again, congratulations to the entire Peterson family for their wins at the 2021 International Falls Bass Championship! It’s just another example of how fishing can build strong family bonds and create awesome memories.

Potomac River Readies to Host Toyota Series Event

[print_link]

MARBURY, Md. (Sept. 9, 2021) – The Toyota Series Presented by A.R.E. Northern Division will wrap up  its 2021 season with a tournament next week in Marbury, Maryland, Sept. 16-18, with the Toyota Series Presented by A.R.E. at the Potomac River . Hosted by the Charles County Board of Commissioners, the three-day tournament will feature the region’s best bass-fishing pros and Strike King co-anglers casting for a top prize of up to $65,000, plus an additional $35,000 bonus if the winner is a qualified Phoenix Boat owner.

Last September, the Eastern Division event was won on the Potomac River by James Maupin of Stanardsville, Virginia – catching more than 13 pounds each day, Maupin finished out the win with a spinnerbait on the final day.

Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit champ and Virginia native, Cody Pike said he believes last year’s event will be a good blueprint for this year’s showdown.

“It’s going to be very similar to last year,” said Pike. “The weights will probably be similar, but I don’t expect to see an 18-pound bag like [Wayne Vaughan] caught last year. I think if a guy can catch 14 pounds three days in a row, he’ll stand a really good chance to win it.”

With the grass growing thick, Pike said it limits the options a bit.

“This time of year, it’s getting to be where you’re either going to be flipping or sitting way off of the bank throwing a swim jig,” he said. “There’s more grass now than there has been and the hydrilla gets so thick in the summertime you can’t fish it because it’s not hollow underneath yet.”

A few years ago in late August, Marvin Reese of Randallstown, Maryland took the win fishing hard cover up near D.C., which Pike said he believes could also be viable.

“I think if a guy were to put their whole practice time into hard cover he could definitely stand out,” said Pike. “You have to manage your fish a whole lot better than in grass, but hard cover up there is something that really doesn’t get a whole lot of pressure, because everyone typically fishes grass. If you see a big bag weighed-in this time of year, it’s more than likely off hard cover. So, if a guy put their whole practice into hard cover, and ran the tide right, he could stand a chance to win.”

Though the fishing in the late summer and fall is a bit more hit and miss than post-spawn fishing, Pike said when you do find the fish, you often find quite a few.

“This time of year, you can find a school that’s grouped up really well and catch a lot on a swim jig,” said Pike. “They start moving in the fall – a lot of times they go into the creeks, and you can catch them moving from those big areas like Belmont Bay towards the back of it. They’ll be feeding, so once you find them you should get bit, but it can be a struggle to find them.”

Anglers will take off daily at 7 a.m. ET from Smallwood State Park in Marbury. Weigh-ins will also be held at the park and will begin at 3 p.m. Fans are welcome to attend the event or follow the action online through the “MLF Live” weigh-in broadcasts and daily coverage at MajorLeagueFishing.com.

In Toyota Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event, scaling up for every 20 boats over 160 and scaling down for every boat below 160. With a 160-boat field, pros fish for a top prize of $40,000, plus an extra $35,000 if Phoenix MLF BIG5 Bonus qualified. Strike King co-anglers cast for the top prize of a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower Mercury outboard (valued at $33,500). With a 260-boat field, pros fish for a top award of $65,000, plus an extra $35,000 if Phoenix MLF BIG5 Bonus qualified. Strike King co-anglers cast for the top prize of a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard (valued at $33,500) plus $5,000 cash.

The 2021 Toyota Series Presented by A.R.E. consists of six divisions – Central, Northern, Plains, Southern, Southwestern and Western – each holding three regular-season events, along with the International division. Anglers who fish all three qualifiers in any of the eight divisions and finish in the top 25 will qualify for the no-entry-fee Toyota Series Presented by A.R.E. Championship for a shot at winning $235,000 cash, including a $35,000 Phoenix MLF BIG5 Bonus for qualified anglers. The winning Strike King co-angler at the championship earns a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower Mercury outboard. Pros and co-anglers have a second chance at qualifying for the Toyota Series Championship through the Wild Card division, by fishing four or more tournaments in any combination of divisions and keeping their three highest finishes.

In addition to wrapping up the Northern Division, the Potomac River event will also be one of the last chances for anglers to qualify for the Toyota Series Championship via the Wild Card division.

The 2021 Toyota Series Championship Presented by A.R.E. will be held Oct. 28-30 on Pickwick Lake in Counce, Tennessee, and is hosted by the Hardin County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Q&A sessions: Ben Hudson brings us an exciting Q&A with one of the true hammers and premier guides of Smith Mountain Lake, Captain Chad Green!

Q: First off, congrats on getting your Captains License! What made you want to pursue being a fishing guide and what can a group expect when spending a day/night out on the water with you?

A: Ever since I was a teenager I wanted to be a guide and almost went out west to be a hunting guide with an outfitter. I have been taking people fishing and hunting since then and enjoy helping others experience the outdoors and enjoy them like I do. I have 2 groups of clients I take out fishing and they differ greatly. Some want to just catch a fish and experience fishing as we all have different levels of interests in fishing. And others want to learn a specific technique, learn the lake, learn typical patterns in a specific time of year. No matter what the expertise is we still have a fun trip and they usually learn something after spending time with me that they didn’t know before which always a goal for me is for the client to go home with more knowledge or skills than what they had before.

Q: You and partner Johnny Martin had a run of back-to-back tournament bags of over 24lbs this spring on Smith Mountain Lake in The Bass Cast’s first event and CATT spring final. That’s a pretty incredible feat. Can you tell us a little bit about how your days played out in those 2 events?

A: Yes, those were 2 great days on Smith Mountain. We caught a lot of fish each of those days and the days went well with no mistakes, other than not covering some water that we should have as we ran out of time. I feel like we could have upgraded possibly with how the bigger fish were feeding later in the day but that’s the way it ended. We culled a low 20’s limit out of the boat after 11am on both of those days fishing completely different areas and techniques each day. We caught fish anywhere from 20ft to 2ft on both days we didn’t lose any fish which helps a lot but we still finished 2nd both days by less than 4-5 oz combined which is tough to swallow, but that’s fishing. I still remember Johnny sitting down in the boat and saying “I cant take any more of this my nerves are shot” LOL. We were catching em’ left and right and 4 pounders were just thrown back and you pondered over how many times you would have liked to have had one of them.

Q: I saw where you recently fished a few night tournaments, and came in with some impressive catches. What’s the night bite been like on SML this year and what is the biggest difference between daytime and nighttime fishing there?

A: Night fishing on SML this year has been very good and fairly consistent for me, it was a little later this year than normal for the deeper water bite. I don’t have time to fish a lot of night tournaments anymore but catching the 3.5 plus pound fish was very plentiful this year. The biggest difference between night time fishing on smith mountain and day time is how the fish react to darkness and each night is different and details are key after dark. You must pay close attention to where you get bites and the quality of fish to be competitive at night here because it changes after dark most of the time.

Q: As summer is coming to a close and fall is approaching, which tournaments are you most excited about for the fall season?

A: I like the early fall tournaments as fish are transitioning and I understand their movements a little better. As we get into October, it starts to get a little tougher because you have warm and cold days and then in November when the real cold sets in it gets a lot more consistent. So for me, September and November are more my favorite as I have also had great days in October, but I have never seen October be consistent from year to year. That has always been one of the toughest months to fish on this lake for quality fish and weights usually drop off during that month.

Q: In your opinion, how does fall differ from the springtime on Smith Mountain?

A: I think the fall differs from the spring on Smith Mountain because the fish are a lot more spooky, and they don’t feed like they do in the spring. You also have a lot of smaller bait fish and clearer water which tends to make a finesse presentation presentable. I also believe there are 2 different groups of fish one preys on the crawfish in the fall and others follow baitfish around. Pick your poison, and go with the flow. If you’re not catching 4 plus pound fish then you probably aren’t doing the right thing.

Q: When other local anglers think of Captain Chad Green, what do you think they would say your favorite bait is? Then tell us what your actual favorite bait is and why?

A: My favorite bait by far is a jig. I can fish it from January to January, rain or shine, deep or shallow. I make my own and if its not green and brown, make sure its brown and green. Now just make sure it’s the color of a crawfish, and fish it where the fish are. You cant catch em’ if they aren’t there. You just can’t beat a jig there is not another bait still to this day that is more consistent on catching big fish.

Q: What are the biggest largemouth and smallmouth that you have ever caught out of SML?

A: The biggest LM on this lake for me is 9lbs 14oz and the SMB is just a little over 5lbs. There are a lot of big bass in SML. If I remember correctly, I caught 5 over 8lbs this spring during weekdays, of course, which seems like that’s always the case for me. I don’t target smallmouth on this lake much because the real ones live in Lake Erie LOL. That’s another story.

Q: What do you consider your biggest tournament win of your career, and why?

A: The biggest tournament wins for me have been Anglers Choice. I have 2 of those and should have had some more, but that’s the way things go. The one that sticks out in my mind the most is one that me and long time partner Dean Wood won years ago. I think we had 23lbs and something, and we also won big largemouth and big smallmouth that day. It was big win for me as team tournaments can be the hardest ones to win, because your partner has to be successful most of time, also its not many times where you win a team event with one man’s catch. That tournament was memorable time frame as large weights were not as common then.

Q: I’m a sucker for “what if” scenarios when it comes to fishing. Do you have any on the water regrets, or any particular lost fish from this year that still haunt you?

A: Oh yes, of course somebody always has the one that got away story. The Anglers Choice tournament here in May. On Saturday we had a great catch, and lost a big one under a dock. Then had another chance at a giant which would have put us well over 20 lbs. We finished 5th with 17-something and it only took 19 lbs to win. Sometimes things just don’t go your way, all the stars have to align out there to win. I have been very blessed and thankful for the times that they do.

Q: Smith Mountain tournament weights have skyrocketed in the past 5 years, and even more so in the past 2 years. As one of the best anglers on the lake, no one knows about this better than you! Do you think the lake has that many bigger fish in it now, or have the anglers fishing SML just figured these big fish out?

A: There is no question in my mind that the F1 tiger bass are taking a large part in this. We have seen our average size catch ratios go up each year since they were stocked. Its going to continue to climb for years to come, and I do believe todays anglers are figuring out how to catch these bigger fish now. I have fished the lake for a long time and remember tournaments in October years ago only taking 10lbs to win. I have seen a definite increase in bass over 8 lbs the last 3 years, and I feel like its going to only get better in years to come. I also believe part of this is due to the low numbers of large stripers in the lake, and that makes larger forage more plentiful for the bass. I have been around long enough to see the effects of large stripers and forage numbers. When the gizzard shad are plentiful, the stripers sizes are smaller, and when they go down in numbers the stripers are more plentiful in size. We now have a very stable population of blue back herring in the lake and that creates a whole different scenario. They were not stocked here and have been collected in sampling for a long time, but the population is now getting to a point that’s noticeable. We have a prized lake here and by far the best fishery in the state.

Q: What is one personal on-the-water goal you hope to achieve for the rest of the year and for the 2022 fishing season?

A: My goal each year is to learn a new area or a new way to catch them, because it doesn’t take long for us to say “we used to catch em doing this or that”. Its strange how it changes over time and we never understand why that happens. My Goal for 2022 is break the 30 lb mark in a tournament, as I tried really hard to do this spring, but failed. I have done it during the week, breaking that mark with almost 33 lbs, but weekdays don’t count. That’s just a few pictures and some good memories with a friend.

Q: If a beginning angler is reading this, what is one tip you can give to help them catch more fish on Smith Mountain Lake.

A: The best tip I can give a beginning angler is learn to fish without electronics first. Learn bottom composition by feel of the rod. Be patient as big fish are typically slow movers. Don’t be afraid to cast at the same exact spot numerous times. Learn the difference in a fish feeding and feeding a fish. Take precious care of the fish, we have an opportunity to catch and cherish every minute of it. And always remember you can’t catch another mans fish, and your fishing against the fish, not fisherman.

The Bass Cast would like to send a big thank you to Captain Chad Green for taking the time to sit down and sharing some great information with us in this Q&A!
If you are interested in fishing with Chad on a guide trip on Smith Mountain Lake, you can reach him at “Last Cast Guide Service” on Facebook.
