Bassmaster Elite Series May Benefit From Perfect Timing At Neely Henry Lake

GADSDEN, Ala. — When the 99 competitors from the Bassmaster Elite Series arrive next week for the Whataburger Bassmaster Elite at Neely Henry Lake, Scott Canterbury expects the 11,200-acre fishery to put on quite a show.

Mind you, he doesn’t predict fans will see the type of historic smashfest atop the standings they saw just last week at Lake Fork. But throughout the field, the Alabama pro believes it’ll be one of the more satisfying tournaments of the season for anglers and fans alike.

Competition days will be May 6-9 with daily takeoffs at 5:40 a.m. CT from Gadsden City Boat Docks, with weigh-ins back at the docks each day at 2 p.m.

The 2019 Bassmaster Angler of the Year said he doesn’t expect to see many empty bags.

“I think we’re hitting Neely Henry at as good a time as we could have possibly hit it,” said Canterbury, an Odenville, Ala., resident with extensive experience up and down the Coosa River chain. “The lake looks really good. It’s completely full with plenty of stuff to fish.

“I think it’s setting up for every angler in the field to fish his strengths, whatever they might be.”

This will only be B.A.S.S.’s fourth visit to Neely Henry for a major event and the first time an Elite Series tournament has been held on the lake. Most recently, the Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens circuit visited last October for an event that was won by Cody Bird with a three-day total of 34 pounds, 1 ounce.

Canterbury believes it will take a bigger daily average to win the Elite Series — and he said he wouldn’t be surprised to see a few scattered 20-pound bags during the week.

“I probably consider Logan Martin my home lake, then Lay Lake and Neely Henry after those two,” Canterbury said. “I don’t fish it a ton, but I pay really close attention to the results coming out of the local trails, and they’ve been down a little the past two or three years.”

He attributes that dropoff to a lack of grass in the lake and annual spring floods that have created less-than-ideal spawning conditions.

“For four or five years in a row, we’ve had a big flood — and when they run those floodgates, there’s an area called Minnesota Bend that creates a natural dam,” Canterbury said. “Water can’t get out of there as fast as it does on the lower end. That leaves the lower end of the lake well below full pool, while the rest of the lake is up in the trees.

“Neither of those things is good for bass on the bed.”

However, local results have rebounded as of late, and the Elites will be hitting the fishery at full pool from dam to dam. That will provide a vast array of deep and shallow structure, and the lake’s healthy populations of both largemouth and spotted bass will allow anglers to fill their daily five-bass limits virtually any way they choose.

“I know I’ll have a couple of different topwaters ready and probably three different kinds of jigs,” Canterbury said. “But there’ll be chances to catch fish any way you want. There’ll be fish caught flipping, fish caught on moving baits and fish caught on topwaters. If you like dragging, I think there’ll be an offshore bite for that.

“There’ll be lots and lots of limits caught — and in my mind, that makes for an exciting tournament.”

As for the question of whether anglers should target largemouth, spots or both?

“If I was fishing a one-day tournament, I’d definitely say largemouth,” Canterbury said. “But remember Matt Robertson finished second in the Open on Neely last fall with nothing but spots — so there are definitely some good spots in the lake, just like there are with all of the Coosa River lakes.

“I don’t know if you could win it with just spots. I think at least two or three out of the four days, you’re going to need a kicker largemouth to really put you up there over the hump.”

Canterbury expects anglers to need 14 pounds a day to make the Top 10 cut for Championship Sunday, and he believes the winning weight will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 61 pounds.

“The great thing about it,” he said, “is we’re likely to have a situation where all 10 anglers still have a genuine chance to win going into Sunday. That makes for a great event.”

Live coverage for all four days of the event can be streamed on Bassmaster.com and the FOX Sports digital platforms. FS1 will also broadcast live with the tournament leaders beginning at 7 a.m. CT on Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament is being hosted by the City of Gadsden and Greater Gadsden Area Tourism.

Bassmaster Elite At Lake Champlain Event Moves To New York

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Guaranteed Rate Bassmaster Elite at Lake Champlain, originally scheduled to launch out of Burlington, Vt., will instead move across the lake to Plattsburgh, N.Y., B.A.S.S. officials announced today. The tournament will still be held July 8-11.

Plattsburgh hosted the Elite Series last summer, when COVID-19 restrictions prevented spectators from attending weigh-ins. That tournament featured an exciting final day, when Brandon Palaniuk mounted an afternoon rally to vault from fifth place to win the Bassmaster Elite at Lake Champlain. B.A.S.S. staff and local officials expect that fishing fans will be allowed at this year’s event while emphasizing that they will adhere to any mandates limiting the crowd size.

“We appreciate the efforts and flexibility of our friends in Plattsburgh and Clinton County for the past two years as they’ve worked alongside our team to put on these tournaments,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin.

The Elite Series will close out their 2021 season with a two-event New York swing. From Plattsburgh the tournament trail travels to Waddington for the Bassmaster Elite at the St. Lawrence River July 15-18.

The tournament will be hosted by the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, City of Plattsburgh and Clinton County.

Early Start Sends Crow To Day 1 Lead At Bassmaster Open On Pickwick

COUNCE, Tenn. — Focusing on two distinctly different spawns rewarded Alabama angler Brent Crow with a five-bass limit of 22 pounds, 11 ounces that leads Day 1 of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on Pickwick Lake.

Crow started his day targeting an early-morning shad spawn on grass and pea gravel bars. His early plan yielded three good largemouth, including a 7-2.

“There are just a couple places I’ve found with a shad spawn,” Crow said. “I think it’s just starting. There really wasn’t a lot of activity; there just happened to be several fish there. Hopefully, tomorrow there will be a lot more.

“You don’t have a lot of time with a shad spawn, so you have to hope you get lucky like I did today. I stayed about 30 minutes and then I couldn’t get bit.”

With a storm system moving through the area, the day saw mostly cloudy skies with a steady morning rain slowing to a drizzle by midday. Many reported struggling with bass rattled and/or displaced by weather, but Crow said he felt comfortable knowing where to find quality bites.

“I guide here and our busiest time starts March 1, so weather permitting, I’ve been here about every day,” he said. “A couple of weeks ago, the smallmouth started spawning and we’re right at the tail end of it. I was able to catch a couple of spawning smallmouth.”

With the smallmouth bedding in about 6 to 8 feet, plus the day’s dim conditions, sight fishing was not an option.

“You can’t see them here, they bed too deep,” Crow said. “But I’m on the lake all the time and I kind of know where they bed. They like to be out of the current in the rocks.”

Crow caught his bed fish on what he described as slow presentations with a Berkley MaxScent The General and a Berkley PowerBait Chigger Craw. With an early start to his productivity, Crow said he faced the dilemma of deciding between fishing more of his key spots or playing a conservative game to manage his fish.

“I had my weight early — by about 9:30 — and I really didn’t want to (fish spots I may need tomorrow),” he said. “I was trying to save a little bit, but I did have a 2-pounder that I wanted to cull and I lost two that would have done it.”

Crow said he plans to work the same program on Day 2, but he’s concerned that timing may work against him.

“I was Boat 10 today and I’ll be 210 tomorrow, so I don’t know what it’s going to be like,” he said.

John Garrett of Union City, Tenn., is in second with 21-12. Success, he said, hinged on adjusting to the weather’s impacts.

“I started running a shad spawn early and I had been catching some big fish on it, but that did not happen today,” Garrett said. “I went to some grass fish and caught 13 to 14 pounds, but I knew something had changed.

“I ended up looking for new fish. I had areas that I know are the first places schools of fish get. I hit two of those places today and really caught them. The fish were fresh, they’d just moved up today after that storm. Whether or not they stay overnight is another story.”

Garrett caught his fish in 16 to 20 feet over offshore structure. He caught them all on a powder blueback Strike King 6XD.

Joey Nania of Cropwell, Ala., is in third with 21-11. Capitalizing on the bite window stimulated by the approaching storm, Nania anchored his bag with an 8-2 that leads the Phoenix Boats Big Bass standings.

“Catching a giant like that makes the whole day smooth,” Nania said. “I pulled up on a point this morning and caught a couple of solid keepers and that got my confidence right. Then right when that storm was coming in, it rained on us a little bit and I threw a ChatterBait.

“I got a couple of bites, I caught one about 3 1/2 and threw back in there and caught that 8-2. It was just a great day.”

Nania said he was targeting offshore structure and using his Garmin Panoptix to keep watch for the right opportunities. While he has a couple different patterns available, Nania said he tried to stick with what has been producing better than average bites.

Steve Madar of Starkville, Miss., leads the co-angler division with 13-2. Doing all of his work offshore, Madar caught two of his biggest fish on a moving bait in the grass. He caught the other one by cranking a ledge.

“The key was an erratic retrieve,” he said. “The fish had just moved out. You’d hit little areas and then all of a sudden, boom, boom, boom — you’d catch them.”

Cory Weaver of Ankeny, Iowa, holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with a 6-13.

Crow leads the Central Open standings with 200 points. Garrett is in second with 199, followed by Nania with 198, Daisuke Aoki of Minamitsuru-gun Yamanashi, Japan, with 197 and Chris Beaudrie of Princeton, Ky., with 196.

Jacob Foutz of Charleston, Tenn., leads the Falcon Rods Bassmaster Opens Angler of the Year overall points standings with 557.

Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. CT from Pickwick Landing State Park. The weigh-in will be held back at the park at 2 p.m. Coverage of the event will be available at Bassmaster.com.

Virtually every angler has their own list of go-to gear, which always accompanies them upon every trip to the lake. For most, this list includes a quality pair of polarized sunglasses. Recently, one well-known eyewear manufacturer made a move to gain additional exposure among anglers, at the highest levels of competitive bass fishing.

Anglers who fish select tournament trails, while wearing Costa sunglasses, might now be eligible for sanctioned payouts. Last week, Costa announced the launch of their new Compete + Conserve program, a promotional series that offers cash bonuses to competing anglers, as well as their conservation agency of choice.

Registration for Costa’s Compete + Conserve program is free, with the ownership of Costa sunglasses being the only prerequisite for qualification. The highest placing angler per sanctioned event, who is registered within the program, will receive the above mentioned payouts. Costa only stipulates that an angler must be wearing their sunglasses in a visible manner, when at the weigh-in stage.

Anglers participating in the following tournament trails will be eligible for competitive entry.

While Costa states their intent to give back to the bass fishing community, it is also safe to say that the eyewear manufacturing giant will also stand to gain from their newly implemented program. After all, there are few better ways to gain brand exposure among anglers, than to provide the industry’s top pros with one more reason to wear your product when weighing in a hefty bag.

Accident Results in Death at MLF Series event on Sam Rayburn Reservoir

WHAT:
MLF confirmed Thursday afternoon that there was an accident resulting in a fatality at the Toyota Series at Sam Rayburn Reservoir event in Brookeland, Texas. The anglers’ family has been notified.

NOTES:
A co-angler competing at the Toyota Series event at Sam Rayburn Reservoir died Thursday after falling from the boat. The boat was not running when the co-angler entered the water.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) recovered the body of the deceased co-angler Thursday afternoon. The incident is currently under investigation by the TPWD and San Augustine County officials. Officials have not yet released the name of the anglers involved.

Thursday’s weigh-in from the Umphrey Family Pavilion will not be live-streamed.

MLF will continue to release information as it becomes available. Updated information will also be posted on the MLF website, MajorLeagueFishing.com, as it becomes available.

Key Adjustment Helps Adkins Claim B.A.S.S. Nation Regional Lead At Hartwell

ANDERSON, S.C. — Adjusting with the changing conditions helped Willie Adkins Jr. catch 10 pounds, 15 ounces and claim the lead after Day 2 of the TNT Firework B.A.S.S. Nation Southeast Regional at Lake Hartwell with a two-day total of 24-5.

Adkins, a Wayne, W.Va., native, holds a 2-ounce lead over Jay Ladner of Mississippi, while Georgia angler Patrick Brown jumped into third place with 23-13.

“It was a great day. I had about 15 keepers today and I covered a lot of water,” Adkins said. “It’s hard to make it here. There’s a lot of good, tough fisherman in West Virginia and when they find fish they can catch them.”

After catching 13-6 on Day 1 fishing for shallow largemouth, Adkins started Day 2 with the same idea, making a 25-minute run to target spawning bass. While he caught some shallow, he said the pattern wasn’t as productive

As the day wore on, the wind speeds over Lake Hartwell increased, and Adkins moved to some shallower points.

“The wind picked up and I changed over to a big spinnerbait and it worked well for me,” Adkins said. “When I left the bed fish, I was catching all spots.”

Adkins estimated his two best spotted bass each weighed about 2 1/2 pounds.

On the final day, he said he plans on making a longer run and will use the same game plan as Day 2 — fish for spawning largemouth in the morning and then move to the points when the wind picks up in the afternoon.

“It’s all I got,” he said.

Ladner, a Perkinston, Miss., resident, caught 12-7 to increase his two-day mark to 24-3 after placing seventh on Day 1 with 11-12. Ladner said he changed his approach completely on the second day.

“Like a lot of guys are doing, I was running and gunning,” he said. “It seemed like the fish bit, for me, a lot better before 10 in the morning. I had all of my fish by 9:30. It is wide open, as fast as you can go, and it is key, little, intricate places that I’m hitting that I think a lot of people are overlooking.”

Ladner said he is familiar with the Ouachita River, which will be the site for the 2021 TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship on Nov. 3-5 — and that adds some motivation to finish at the top of his state standings.

“I’ve got a different plan for tomorrow,” he said. “So hopefully with three different patterns and three different areas of the lake we can pull this thing out.”

After finishing Day 1 in 40th place, Brown brought 14-12 to the scale on Day 2, the largest bag of the tournament thus far. Brown caught just over 9 pounds on Day 1 flipping after having a productive practice, but when the bite did not materialize early on Day 2, he knew he had to make a change.

“With the wind forecasted to blow, I knew we had to get on the shoals,” Brown said. “I had a shoal that had a lot of bait on it. Luckily there wasn’t anybody on it.”

While the shoal did not produce for the first hour, Brown stayed and his patience paid off, as he caught a limit of spotted bass on a topwater bait. He added that he lost about a 7-pound largemouth.

“You can hardly get them to eat when it is calm,” Brown said. “It was actually blowing a little too hard, but when the wind got going about 10:30, that’s what got them going.”

Brown is searching for his first National Championship appearance since 2003 and said he is excited for the opportunity to get back.

“I’m pretty excited,” he said. “I’ve tried several times. I’m ready to get back after it.”

Matt Luken of Independence, Ky., maintained his grip on the co-angler lead, landing a limit weighing 5-11 to increase his two-day total to 14-12. Reggie Guffey Jr. of North Carolina is in second with 13-5 while Jody Belcher of West Virginia is in third with his 13-5. Guffey holds the edge in the tiebreaker with his 7-1 on Day 1.

South Carolina boater Chris Jones earned big bass honors on the boater side on Day 2 with a 4-9, while Justin Jensen of Mississippi caught a 5-8 and holds that lead on the co-angler side. Adkins remains on top of the overall big bass standings on the boater side with a 6-0 largemouth from the first day.

With the individual competition still underway, South Carolina earned the victory in the team standings, catching 262-8 over two days to claim the wire-to-wire win. The team earned $6,250 in Skeeter/Yamaha winnings. North Carolina (256-8) finished second, earning $3,750, and West Virginia (250-12) finished third.

The Top 20 boaters and nonboaters, as well as the Top 2 boaters and nonboaters from each state if they weren’t already in the Top 20, will take off from Green Pond Landing at 6:30 a.m. ET Friday and return for weigh-in at 2:30 p.m.

The top boater and nonboater from each state will qualify for the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.

4/10/21 – Boydton, VA. Fifty anglers got together to target largemouth bass on Kerr Lake in a qualifying event for the American Fishing Tour Virginia division. On what was a picture-perfect day weather-wise, 36 of those anglers caught a limit of bass.

At weigh-in time, David Wright of Lexington, NC, finished atop the leader board with 17.17 pounds. “I was targeting areas that I knew from experience were spawning areas. You really couldn’t sight fish because of low water clarity and a significant layer of pollen on the water. The surprise for me was that the large females were not “up” in any of these areas. Lots of two to three-pound males were caught, just no big ones.”

Keith Crespo, on the other hand, found a couple of those big ones. He brought in a 5.70 and a 5.26 to capture big fish honors on the day.

Brian Clarke took second for the day with 16.54 pounds.

All totaled, our anglers took home $2700 in winnings. These anglers earn valuable points toward the divisional angler of the year title. Each division’s points champion will compete in the annual American Bass Anglers AFT Angler of The Year Final Round at the AFT Championship. The top 500 anglers from the various divisions will also earn the right to compete in the three-day ABA, AFT National Championship tournament.

The American Fishing Tour offers low-cost, close-to-home bass tournaments that are designed for the weekend angler. All anglers fish for both money and points. Edel Wins ABA Second Stop in Central Tennessee

ATHENS, Al. –Brandon Edel of Hendersonville, Tn won the Bass Pro Shop Open Series Central Tennessee second stop, held April 24th on Old Hickory Lake. Running out of Flippers Bait and Tackle, Gallatin Tn. Brandon brought back 5-fish that locked in the scales at 15.65-lbs. For the Boater Division victory, Brandon Edel took home a check for $1500 for his win.

“After practice I thought I would be able to catch 9 or 10 keepers, but it changed on me, I was only able to catch 6 keepers, it was a really slow day. I managed to catch one of my better fish on the second to last cast. I was concentrating on lay downs pitching a creature bait, I also fished a weightless stick around grass beds fishing really slow,” said Edel.

2nd place Boater James Thomas of Gallatin, Tn had 5 fish for a total of 15.60-lbs.
“I had all my fish by 9 o’clock this morning nothing after. It was very slow, and I was flipping shallow,” said Thomas.

3rd place Boater Eric Silverstrim of Indian Mound, Tn had 5 fish for a total of 12.59 pounds. “It was all about the merging grass didn’t matter which kind, but they seem to be holding fish. I caught about 10 to 11 keepers, mostly males waiting for the females to move to bed,” said Silverstrim.

4th place Boater: Dylan Wright of Murfreesboro, Tn had 4 fish for a total of 11.43 pounds.

5th place Boater: John Hopkins of Smyrna, Tn had 5 fish for a total of 10.90 pounds.

Boater Big Bass Jason Kirks of Clarksville, Tn won the big bass pot with a 5.77 pound largemouth.

In the Co-Angler Division David Higgins of Brighton, Tn had 3 fish for a total of 10.43 pounds to take home first place. He pocketed a check for $500.00. He also had Big fish with a 6.03 pounds for a check of $80.00.

“I was fishing a jig around grass and rocky points,” said Higgins.

2nd place Co-Angler: Joe Nash of Cookeville, Tn had 3 fish for a total of 8.40 pounds.
“I fished beaver baits and bugs all day long,” said Nash.

3rd place Co-Angler: Kevin Jones Jr. of Fort Campbell, Ky had 3 fish for a total of 8.18 pounds.“I caught all my fish on a jig and shakey head all day long,” said Jones.

4th place Co-Angler: Roy Yother of Red Bank, Tn had 3 fish for a total of 5.87 pounds.
5th place Co-Angler: Trent Pennington of Hermitage, Tn had 3 fish for a total of 5.85 pounds.

The next stop in the Central Tennessee Open Series division is May 8th on Percy Priest lake at Fate Sanders Marina. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance the 2022 Ray Scott Championship to be held at Lake Eufaula in April, 2022.

Southwestern Division will continue its 2021 season with a tournament this week in Brookeland, Texas, April 28-30, with the Toyota Series presented by A.R.E. at the Sam Rayburn Reservoir Presented by Berkley . Hosted by the Jasper-Lake Sam Rayburn Area Chamber of Commerce, the three-day tournament will feature the region’s best bass-fishing pros and Strike King co-anglers casting for a top prize of up to $65,000, plus an additional $35,000 bonus if the winner is a qualified Phoenix Boat owner.

Tennessee Angler Terajima Takes B.A.S.S. Nation Regional Lead On Lake Hartwell

ANDERSON, S.C. — Nobuyuki Terajima secured a five-bass limit of 14 pounds, 2 ounces Wednesday to take the lead on Day 1 of the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Southeast Regional at Lake Hartwell.

It was a good start for the Tennessee pro, who is in search of his fourth appearance in the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship. The Japanese-born angler holds an 11-ounce lead over Georgia angler Donald Tully, who is second with 13-7.

“I found a good morning bite on a shallow point,” Terajima said. “I was lucky enough to get four keepers in the morning.”

This isn’t the first time Terajima has found success on Lake Hartwell. During the 2019 B.A.S.S. Nation Championship, he caught 29-5 and finished seventh in the field of 60 anglers.

That tournament was in November, however, and Terajima said he had to start from scratch when he began preparing for this week’s tournament.

“I had a horrible practice,” he said. “The water temperature went up a little bit and I couldn’t find any good fish. Only some in the shallow area. I feel lucky today.”

After a bad practice, Terajima started on a shallow point that had active bass and proceeded to catch three spots and a largemouth. As the day progressed, he moved shallow and landed a largemouth that he estimated was over 4 pounds.

“I didn’t see any beds. I wasn’t sight fishing, the line just started moving,” he said. “I culled four fish today.”

When Tully left the dock this morning, he was still unsure of which direction he was going. He decided to head up the Seneca River section of Hartwell and it paid off with a limit of largemouth.

He caught the majority of his bass on a topwater bait fishing main-lake points in 8 to 10 feet of water. Once he filled his limit, he moved shallow and targeted a couple of bass he found on bed.

“I could have kept two rods on the deck of the boat,” he said. “I just kept running the same type of water once I figured out where they were. I had nine spots that I rotated through, and if I caught a fish on a spot and saw something on the way down the river that looked similar I would check it out for tomorrow.”

In practice, Tully said he found a lot of bass cruising the shallows that he could not get to commit. Instead, he decided to target the bass that had finished spawning a couple of weeks before and were headed back to the main lake.

He added that Hartwell sets up a lot like Lake Lanier, a lake he fishes frequently.

With 13-6, Wayne, W.V., native Willie Adkins Jr. finished Day 1 in third place, anchoring his bag with a 6-0 largemouth that currently holds the lead for big bass of the tournament. Adkins did a lot of his damage on a fluke and covered as much water as he could throughout the day.

“I fished hard all day but lost about five fish. I should have had 18 or 20 pounds easy,” Adkins said.

A shallow-water angler at heart, Adkins used that mindset to target largemouth bass around docks and coves in the main-lake area. He estimated he made about 50 stops, hitting each area for a short time before moving to the next.

On Thursday, Adkins plans to fish a completely different area.

“I’m going to make a long run tomorrow and change things up,” he said. “I put a hurting on my fish today, the big ones. I have a few big ones where I’m going to run.”

Matt Luken of Independence, Ky., leads the co-angler division after catching a three-bass limit of 9-1, including a 4-1 that was the co-angler big bass of the day. Spencer Humphrey of Madison, Va., is second with 7-3.

South Carolina took a commanding lead in the team standings, catching 72 bass that weighed 139-8. West Virginia is second with 131-4, while North Carolina is third (126-15), Georgia is fourth (125-13) and Virginia is fifth (117-1).

The full field will launch from Green Pond Landing at 6:30 a.m. ET Thursday and return for weigh-in starting at 2:30 p.m.

After Day 2, the Top 20 boaters and nonboaters, as well as the top two boaters and nonboaters from each state if they are not in the Top 20 already, will compete on Championship Friday. The top boater and top nonboater after the final day will qualify for the 2021 TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship to be held Nov. 3-5 on the Ouachita River in Louisiana.

The tournament is being hosted by Visit Anderson.
