Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit presented by Bad Boy Mowers Heads to Lewis Smith Lake

163 Professional Anglers Compete in Cullman for up to $135,000, Season Purse Exceeds $6.4 Million

CULLMAN, Ala. (March 8, 2021) – Major League Fishing (MLF), the world’s largest tournament organization, heads to Cullman, Alabama, this week, March 11-14, for the MLF Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit presented by Bad Boy Mowers, Covercraft Stop 2 – Lewis Smith Lake . This is the second event of the 2021 Pro Circuit season – hosted by the Cullman Area Local Organizing Committee – offering competitors the opportunity to compete for a total purse of more than $900,000.

In its 26th season, the circuit formerly known as the FLW Tour features 163 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals competing across six regular-season events, each with a top award of up to $135,000. The field will also compete for valuable points to qualify for the 2021 Tackle Warehouse TITLE presented by Mercury, the Pro Circuit Championship, and the opportunity to compete for up to $235,000.

This event will mark the fifth time the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit has visited Lewis Smith Lake.

The Pro Circuit last visited Smith Lake in April 2018, when North Carolina pro David Williams took advantage of the shad spawn around the docks, bringing home the hardware with a four-day total of 64 pounds, 9 ounces. Prior to that, in March 2015, Pennsylvania pro Dave Lefebre sacked up 65 pounds, 5 ounces over four days, with a unique technique – targeting fish chasing blueback herring with a wakebait – to bring home the win. Lefebre also holds the record for the heaviest winning weight in a Pro Circuit event on Smith Lake.

“I was able to fish on Smith Lake a lot last year due to COVID-19 – it is phenomenal through the winter months and anglers are able to get a lot of bites. The fishing is ideal right now and will be through the next month or so,” said Cullman native and Bass Pro Tour angler Matt Lee. “It’s setting up nice and we haven’t had any crazy amounts of rain or flooding, so I think guys are going to be able to catch them just about any way they want to.”

Although Smith Lake is a highland reservoir and known for its deep, clear water, with depths up to 250 feet, with spring around the corner the fish are starting to move up to shallower water.

“It’s in that pre-spawn phase right now – right in between moons, when fish are moving up – so this should be a really good tournament,” Lee continued. “The dirtier water back in the creeks is always a factor on Smith Lake. However, with the number of boats in the field, there’s not as much of it, so it can fish small under that type of pressure and it might be tricky to count on that to hold up for four days.

“I predict it will take 17 pounds a day to win the event and 15 pounds the first three days should guarantee a spot in the top 10 on the final day,” said Lee.

Anglers will take off at 7 a.m. CT Thursday through Sunday from Smith Lake Park, located at 403 County Road 386 in Cullman. Weigh-ins will also be held at the park Thursday and Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 4 p.m. Due to COVID-19 precautions, attendance is limited to competing anglers, family, essential staff and media covering the event. Fans are encouraged to follow the action online through the MLF NOW! live stream and coverage at MajorLeagueFishing.com.

In Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit competition, the full field of 163 anglers compete in the two-day opening round on Thursday and Friday. The top 50 pros based on their two-day cumulative weight advance to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continue competition on Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.

The MLF Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit presented by Bad Boy Mowers, Covercraft Stop 2 – Lewis Smith Lake event will feature live on-the-water coverage and a two-hour action-packed television show that will premiere on the Outdoor Channel on Sunday, July 18 from 7 to 9 a.m. ET and re-air on the Sportsman Channel this fall. Weigh-ins will be streamed daily and fans can catch live on-the-water action all day Saturday and Sunday, March 13-14 on MLF NOW! beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT at MajorLeagueFishing.com.

The 2021 season culminates with the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit TITLE presented by Mercury, where the top 48 pros in the points standings plus, 2020 TITLE Champion Rusty Salewske of Alpine, California, and 2020 Angler of the Year Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs, Michigan, will compete for as much as $235,000. The 2021 TITLE will be on the Mississippi River in La Crosse, Wisconsin on Aug. 17-22, and is hosted by Explore La Crosse.

Sunrise Beach’s Harlin Goes Wire-to-Wire, Wins Toyota Series Event on Lake of the Ozarks Presented by Fenwick

Missouri Pro Earns Second Career MLF Victory on Lake of the Ozarks, Earns $37,802

[print_link]

OSAGE BEACH, Mo. (March 7, 2021) – Missouri boater Michael Harlin of Sunrise Beach, Missouri, brought five bass to the scale Saturday weighing 20 pounds, 6 ounces to win the Toyota Series presented by A.R.E. at Lake of the Ozarks Presented by Fenwick. Harlin weighed in 15 bass over three days of competition totaling 62 pounds, 1 ounce, besting second-place angler Andy Newcomb of Camdenton, Missouri , by more than 15 pounds. For his victory, Harlin earned the top payout of $37,802 in the first tournament of the 2021 Toyota Series Presented by A.R.E. Plains Division.

Each day was a little different in how the bite unfolded for Harlin, but he caught them all three days doing the same thing – throwing an umbrella rig while watching his forward-facing sonar.

“Today, I stuck with the same plan,” Harlin said. “I was fortunate to sit right down on them this morning when they were biting, or it would have been a lot tougher. I caught my two biggest fish right away and had most of my weight by 9 o’clock.”

All week, he targeted what he considers the mid-depth range and cycled through multiple spots.

“I keyed on the 6- to 20-foot range,” said Harlin. “All of the places were between the toll bridge and the dam. I started the tournament with around 15 spots I found in practice and had narrowed it down to eight or 10 by today. I also found some new stuff yesterday and that’s where I started today.”

Keying on brush and rock to find fish, Harlin thinks locating staging areas was of more importance. Timing was another critical factor.

“It was mainly brush but also some rock and pea gravel,” said Harlin. “It didn’t seem to matter what it was they were holding to. The first day I caught them all day and the second day, it was late in the day. Today, it was an early bite. I think you just had to hit it right when they were in that feeding window.

Harlin’s umbrella-rig was a YUM YUMbrella Flash Mob Jr. with 1/8-ounce Crock-O-Gator jigheads rigged with 3.8-inch Keitech Swing Impact FAT swimbaits . That setup was his go-to all week.

“I fished the French pearl color and pro blue red pearl and would alternate if it got sunny or cloudy,” he said. “I also caught some fish today on a Megabass Vision 110 in stain reaction OB.”

Forward-facing sonar was vital for Harlin, both for locating fish and getting them to bite.

“I watched just about every fish I caught this week eat the bait,” he says. “It takes a lot of practice with it, but you can learn to interact with the fish. It helps you get them to bite when they aren’t really biting that good or just following it. It gives you a clue to change your retrieve a little if they are not committing to it.”

The top 10 pros on Lake of the Ozarks finished:

1st:       Michael Harlin of Sunrise Beach, Mo., 15 bass, 62-1, $37,802

Carson-Newman Team Of Gaddis And Cully Earns Bassmaster College Series Win At Hartwell

[print_link]

ANDERSON, S.C. — When the first stop of the 2021 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops was changed from Lake Norman to Lake Hartwell due to COVID-19 protocols, Carson-Newman University angler Ben Cully was less than pleased.

Hartwell had not been kind to him and his partner Hayden Gaddis the last couple of years, including a 35th-place finish last year.

This season, however, Gaddis and Cully flipped the script and took home the victory at Lake Hartwell, catching 17 pounds, 13 ounces on both days for a two-day total of 35-10. Along with some hardware, the duo earned a spot in the 2021 Bassmaster College Series National Championship and more than $3,000 for the Carson-Newman fishing program.

“I was looking forward to Norman,” Cully said. “We fished Hartwell quite a bit and we haven’t done the greatest. It worked out this time, though. Hartwell treated us right.”

The duo finished over 2 1/2 pounds ahead of the Emmanuel College team of Tyler Campbell and Caleb Hudson, while their Carson-Newman teammates Braden Perry and Aidan England placed third.

“It’s just a range of emotions right now,” Gaddis said. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was a child and we finally made it happen.”

With the change in venue, Gaddis said they knew they had to target largemouth if they wanted a chance to win. They focused their efforts on the Tugaloo River side of Lake Hartwell, specifically targeting the back sides of docks and laydowns.

They used a white 1/2-ounce Z-Man Evergreen JackHammer with a swimbait trailer and a 1/2-ounce Z-Man CrossEyeZ jig in green pumpkin.

“It’s kind of like a staging area for those fish to get ready and spawn,” Cully said. “All the fish we’ve been catching are fish that are just about ready to spawn.”

Sitting in third place following Day 1, Gaddis wrote a simple message on the top of his hand before taking off on Championship Saturday: “Grind it.” The phrase turned out to be a reality for the team, as cooler, cloudy conditions swept over the area overnight and prevailed most of the morning and early afternoon.

After throwing the ChatterBait for most of the morning with no success, they slowed down and started flipping jigs. With one bass in their livewell by mid-morning, they made a move and quickly filled their limit and caught their biggest bass of the day, a largemouth they estimated to be over 5 pounds.

“It was just a mental note to keep your head down and fish, even when things aren’t looking good,” Gaddis said. “We were down and out until we pulled into that pocket and that just boosted our confidence and it got the ball rolling.”

Campbell and Hudson also struggled during the morning hours trying to catch spotted bass in deeper water on the Southern end of Lake Hartwell. Their fortunes changed later in the afternoon, however, when the sun finally emerged.

“Those spotted bass, the way they are set up right now, they have their nose in the cover,” Campbell said. “Once that sun popped out, we knew we had to capitalize on the opportunity. As soon as the sun came out and it (calmed down), we were able to get them in the boat.”

With one fish in the boat for most of the day, Campbell and Hudson filled their limit at around 1 p.m. and culled several more times for a Day 2 total of 16-12, jumping from seventh to second with 33-5.

Campbell, a Lake Hartwell resident, spent most of practice eliminating water and didn’t expect to fish offshore based on history. But when the shallow pattern didn’t produce, they made an adjustment and found some manmade brushpiles offshore.

The Emmanuel College freshmen used a 3/8-ounce Greenfish Tackle Swimball paired with a 3.8 Keitech swimbait in Tennessee shad to catch their spotted bass in 20 to 40 feet of water.

“We let it sink down to the bottom,” Hudson said. “They ate it right off the bottom or in the structure we were fishing.”

Despite leading Day 1, Perry and England fell short of a victory once again on a spotted bass venue, finishing third with 33-4. The Carson-Newman team used a vertical presentation on the first day, but strong winds prevented them from setting up on their spot Saturday.

“We were fired up to get out there,” Perry said. “We got to our one little honey hole and the wind was blowing right in on it. We couldn’t get set up on our fish and didn’t catch any fish dropping like we did yesterday. We had to scramble and come up with a new game plan.”

While a 3-inch Gulp Minnow with a 1/4-ounce VMC Moon Eye jighead was the key on Day 1, Perry and England salvaged their day Saturday by running secondary points with river rock, throwing a football jig and a wobblehead jig.

While they fell short, the duo qualified for their third-straight National Championship.

The team of Brady Harp and Jordan McCaleb won the Carhartt Big Bass of the tournament award with a 6-7 largemouth caught on the first day. They earned a $500 Carhartt gift card.

The tournament was hosted by Visit Anderson.

Tuma Earns Bassmaster Southern Open Win With Huge Final Day On Harris Chain

[print_link]

LEESBURG, Fla. — Overcoming a modest start, Keith Tuma of Brainerd, Minn., caught the week’s biggest bag of 26 pounds, 2 ounces Saturday and won the Basspro.com Bassmaster Southern Open at the Harris Chain of Lakes with a three-day total of 58-13.

One of only two anglers to break 20 pounds twice (also second-place Alex Wetherell), Tuma caught 12-6 on Day 1 and placed 58th. Friday saw him rebound with a limit of 20-5, which moved him into 10th.

Knowing he couldn’t finish any lower, Tuma said he entered Saturday’s final round with a relaxed attitude that helped him focus on improving.

“Yesterday, I never thought I’d have a shot at the Top 10, so today, I went out there super calm,” he said. “My family and friends back home told me, ‘Just go fishing. You can’t do any worse than 10.’ It just started coming together. It was ridiculous.”

Tuma earned $52,300, which included the $500 Garmin Tournament Rewards prize, and a berth in the 2022 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk.

Previous experience benefited Tuma, who, along with Minnesota B.A.S.S. Nation partner Andy Walls, placed second at the 2020 Bassmaster Team Championship at the Harris Chain. Relying on his knowledge of this stellar Florida fishery, Tuma located a key stretch of offshore grass in about 8 feet of water.

“The key for me was staying in the one spot I had found in practice until I had the limit I needed to have the confidence to check out other spots,” Tuma said. “The wind was a little harder on my main spot, but I did get an 8-pounder there and then I ran to my other area and caught one in the 6-pound range.”

Tuma’s secondary spot was a flat in 5 to 6 feet of water with low-growing hydrilla on the bottom. In both areas, he used a 1/2- to 3/4-ounce white Z-Man JackHammer ChatterBait with a Castaic Jerky J trailer.

“Everybody else who was in the area was throwing ChatterBaits with paddletail trailers, but I think that the little subtle difference in my trailer made the fish want to eat,” he said. “I was getting bit when other guys weren’t.”

Both of Tuma’s areas were within approximately half a mile of Venetian Gardens (site of the daily takeoffs and Day 1 and 2 weigh-ins). Proximity to the tournament site meant fishing near a steady travel lane — and Tuma realized that boat traffic actually benefited his game each tournament day.

“Every time a boat went by, they started biting because it pushed the bait around,” he said. “So that taught me that boat traffic didn’t bother them.”

Hailing from Middletown, Conn., Wetherell finished second with 56-13. After leading the field into Day 3, he struggled to maintain the momentum that delivered bags of 20-11 and 24-14 the first two rounds. On Saturday, he managed a limit of just 11-4.

Returning to the offshore grass he’d fished since Day 1, Wetherell looked for the healthiest vegetation he could find. He caught his bass on a 3/4-ounce white Z-Man JackHammer ChatterBait with a 4-inch Lunker City Swimming Ribster swimbait and a Carolina-rigged 7-inch green pumpkin Senko.

“I’d fish fast with the ChatterBait and then slow down with the Senko to pick apart the better areas,” Wetherell said. “Keith (Tuma) and I were fishing the same area yesterday and he was a real class act and stayed off the section I was fishing.

“Yesterday was just an incredible day and I got the bites again today; they just wouldn’t commit to it.

Day 1 leader Patrick Walters of Summerville, S.C., finished in third place with 55-14. After leading Day 1 with 24 pounds, he caught 13-5 on Day 2 and slipped to third. He finished strong with a limit of 18-9 Saturday.

Relying on forward-facing sonar to monitor bait and fish movement, Walters started on the shallow grass he’d fished the first two days. A slow morning prompted him to shift gears and punch matted cover.

“This morning I got kinda bored with that spot, so I made a long run to Lake Apopka because I just wanted to have fun and go fishing,” Walters said. “At 12 o’clock, I had a small limit, with two of the fish I weighed in and I said, ‘Let’s turn that Garmin back on and go do some fishing.’

“I stopped in the canal (exiting Lake Apopka) and caught one really quick and ran back to Little Lake Harris at 12:45. I went back to a spot where I’d caught them the first day and, on my third cast, I caught my biggest fish of the day. So, I probably made a mistake and didn’t stay.”

Walters caught his punching fish on a Zoom Z-Craw Jr. (black/blue and green pumpkin) Texas-rigged with a 1- and a 1 1/2-ounce weight. The shallow grass fish bit a Zoom Fluke Stick and a Zoom Zlinky — both Texas- and Wacky-rigged.

Charles Proctor of Conway, S.C., won the $750 Phoenix Boats Big Bass award for a 9-0 largemouth.

This year’s Opens circuit includes three divisions — Southern, Central and Northern — with three events in each. All nine tournament winners will earn an automatic berth to the 2022 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk if they fish all events in their division. Additionally, the Top 3 finishers from each division’s points standings will receive an invitation to fish the 2022 Bassmaster Elite Series, as will the Top 3 from the overall standings accumulated in all three divisions.

With this week’s victory, Tuma took the early lead in the Falcon Rods Bassmaster Opens Angler of the Year race. The winner of that award, which is based on points accumulated in all three divisions, will earn a $10,000 prize. The winner in the co-angler division will earn paid entry fees into the Opens division of his or her choice — a value of approximately $5,400.

Lake County and the City of Leesburg hosted the tournament.

Carson-Newman Leads Bassmaster College Series At Lake Hartwell

Braden Perry and Aidan England, of Carson-Newman University, are leading after Day 1 of the 2021 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series at Lake Hartwell presented by Bass Pro Shops with 18 pounds, 11 ounces.

Carson-Newman Leads Bassmaster College Series At Lake Hartwell

[print_link]

ANDERSON, S.C. — Thanks to a morning flurry, the Carson-Newman University duo of Aidan England and Braden Perry caught five bass that weighed 18 pounds, 11 ounces to lead Day 1 of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series at Lake Hartwell presented by Bass Pro Shops.

England and Perry hold an 11-ounce lead over the second-place team of Nate Lesch and Will Schibig from Tennessee Tech. The Carson-Newman team of Ben Cully and Hayden Gaddis placed third with 17-13.

Throughout their college careers, England and Perry have learned where spotted bass like to group up during the early prespawn. They have ridden that information to successful finishes across multiple venues, including a second-place showing at Smith Lake in Alabama during the 2019 season.

“This is our junior year. We found over the last three years at every spotted bass lake we’ve been to, all these spots like to load up on one area this time of the year,” Perry said. “They are all feeding up and getting ready to go drop their eggs off. They like to load into one area and we milked one area for what it is worth and we are going to do the same tomorrow.”

Coming off their worst day of practice and drawing a later flight, England expected the bite to be tough. But when they arrived at their spot, it only took Perry and England about 20 minutes to land a limit.

While they caught predominantly spotted bass, two largemouth also made the trip with them back to the weigh-in at Green Pond Landing.

“We really didn’t know what we were sitting on and hopefully there are still some sitting down there tomorrow,” England said.

After highs in the upper 60s on Day 1, a cooldown is expected for Saturday’s final round. England said he isn’t sure what that will do to their bite.

“With conditions changing, you never know what is going to happen, and I think the high tomorrow will be in the upper 50s,” Perry said. “It’s not going to get nearly as hot as it did today. I think we are just going to go back to the same area and try to fill our limit and see how it goes from there.

“If we don’t have some big bites in the first few hours, we may run and scramble. We know there are some big ones there.”

Lesch actually fished by himself on Day 1 while Schibig interviewed for a job. Lesch managed five largemouth that lifted him into second place in his first Bassmaster College Series event.

“I still can’t really process (being at the top of the leaderboard),” Lesch said. “Over the summer I bought my own boat and it’s all coming together in a way I could have never hoped for.”

Building on what he found in practice, Lesch focused on shallow areas with moving baits.

“I had no idea what to expect. We found a lot of really good spots, but we didn’t know what the creeks were going to look like. The first creek I went to there were three people,” he said. “There is a ton of pressure right now. I went really far up the lake and found a really good pattern.”

After a consistent practice, Cully and Gaddis made about a 15-minute run up the Tugaloo River to start the morning and filled their limit quickly. A 4-8 largemouth anchored their bag and kicked off an important morning flurry.

“We got on one little stretch of bank and we caught three big ones back to back to back,” Gaddis said. “It was a grind after that. We pulled into another area and I lost a key fish that would have put us well over what we had today.”

Mechanical issues shortened their day, but Gaddis said he expects the fishing will continue to heat up.

“I thought people were going to catch them this week and I still believe they are,” he said. “Things are fixing to get right.”

The team of Brady Harp and Jordan McCaleb currently hold the lead for Carhartt Big Bass of the tournament with a 6-7 largemouth.

The full field will compete Saturday for a chance to not only win the tournament, but also earn a spot in the 2021 College Series National Championship. Teams will launch from Green Pond Landing at 6:45 a.m. ET Saturday, with weigh-in set for 2:45 p.m.

Drury University Wins 2021 Abu Garcia College Fishing National Championship presented by Lowrance

GROVE, Okla. (March 5, 2021) – The Drury University duo of Cole Breeden of Eldridge, Missouri and Cameron Smith of Nixa, Missouri, weighed a five-bass limit Friday totaling 14 pounds, 10 ounces to win the 2021 Abu Garcia College Fishing presented by YETI National Championship presented by Lowrance at Grand Lake . This is the first national title for Drury, who had two teams in the top five, and earned the team a $33,500 prize package, including a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower Mercury outboard and automatic entry into the 2021 Toyota Series Championship to compete as pros for a shot to win up to $235,000.

After leading on Day One, then dropping to third place on Day Two, the Panther duo’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 41-10 gave them the win by a 1-pound, 5-ounce margin. Zackary Martin and Harbor Lovin from Murray State University finished second with 15 bass weighing 40-5.

“This has been an awesome week,” said Smith. “At the beginning of the week, we planned to just get a limit each of the first few days and to keep to ourselves and stay in contention. We didn’t realize at the time that what we were catching would keep us in contention for the win.”

Breeden said Grand Lake was a lot like one of their home lakes, Lake of the Ozarks, but the fish seemed to be in an atypical position for this time of year.

“If we were on Lake of the Ozarks right now, we would be fishing secondary points pretty much all day, but this week we found them up shallow,” said Smith. “We think it had something to do with the sunny, warm days earlier this week, warming up the water and making the fish up by the bank a little more active than the ones out deep.”
The duo said they spent most of the week throwing jerkbaits in the pockets in the back of creeks but the Jackall Rerange Jerkbait was key and definitely reeled in the most fish.

“We found ourselves even farther back in pockets on the final day,” Smith said. “The wind was blowing that direction, which moved the shad and baitfish even farther back. We looked for pockets that had steeper bank on them then dropped off – the fish were hanging right on that edge – so we dropped the jerkbait on top of the ledge, then worked it down. They followed it out and we could see them eat the bait on the livescope about half-way back to the boat.”

“Areas were a big thing for us – just finding the right depth in a pocket with the perfect kind of ledge on it was key,” said Breeden.

On taking home the win, the duo said they couldn’t be happier and knew their coach and school would definitely be proud.

“I’ve got to be honest, the only thing keeping me from passing out during the weigh-in was that seat holding me up – It was a nail-biter,” laughed Smith. “It just means so much – watching our team at Drury grow is amazing. Having the opportunity to fish on Championship Friday alone is amazing, let alone two teams making it into the top five and one of us taking home the win – we couldn’t be more excited.”

The top 10 teams on Grand Lake finished:

Wetherell Stays Offshore To Take Lead At Bassmaster Open On Harris Chain

Alex Wetherell, of Middletown, Conn., is leading after Day 2 of the 2021 Basspro.com Bassmaster Southern Open at Harris Chain of Lakes with a two-day total of 45 pounds, 9 ounces.

Wetherell Stays Offshore To Take Lead At Bassmaster Open On Harris Chain

LEESBURG, Fla. — Alex Wetherell of Middletown, Conn., turned in a dominant performance during Friday’s second round of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Southern Open on the Harris Chain of Lakes with a five-bass limit that weighed 24 pounds, 14 ounces.

Added to his Thursday catch of 20-11, Wetherell now leads the event with a two-day total of 45-9.

Although he’s fished the Harris Chain only once before, Wetherell said he has figured out a couple of key details about Sunshine State bass.

“I’ve learned how to understand the grass and distinguish what I’m looking for,” he said. “I’m targeting offshore grass and there’s a lot of it out there. But just because you mark grass doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good.

“I found areas in practice and I’m expanding on those areas and really dialing in the sweet spots. It just seems that certain clumps of grass have fish and others don’t.”

Stating that the crisper, cleaner grass was best, Wetherell said he covered water until he got bit and then explored the spot to determine its potential.

“Once I get a bite, I’ll sit on that spot and work it very meticulously,” he said. “I’m using two particular baits — one to locate a (productive) area and one to fish it slowly.

“It’s really efficiency based. I want to be able to work a bait through the grass without getting hung up too much to where I’m not efficient in my cast.”

Similar to bed fishing, Wetherell found it beneficial to hit his key areas from multiple angles. In some instances, repetition was his ally.

“It’s amazing because you’ll make the same cast 15 times and then all of a sudden you’ll get bit,” he said. “I caught an 8-pounder pretty early in the morning and then I caught a 6.

“I had this bag and I lost (an estimated 7-pounder) so it was a pretty unbelievable day. I was done by noon and then I was just scanning around for other spots.”

Wetherell started in Lake Harris and then moved to Lake Dora after the first hour. His better bites came from Dora.

Jacob Foutz of Charleston, Tenn., leveraged a lucky break and fished his way into second place with 38-9. After catching 15 pounds on Day 1, Foutz added 23-9 Friday.

“Fortunately, they came up schooling around me and they were all big ones,” Foutz said. “It’s just one of those things that happens every couple of years.

“I caught three big ones and jumped off two other really big ones, so I could have had a really big day.”

Fishing in Lake Dora, Foutz watched the subsurface activity on his Garmin Panoptix LiveScope and caught his fish on a gizzard shad-colored jerkbait and a Texas-rigged Zoom Magnum Trick Worm in the red shad color.

Day 1 leader Patrick Walters of Summerville, S.C., is in third place with 37-5. The Bassmaster Elite Series pro held the top spot after Thursday’s opening round with 24 pounds, but he managed only 13-5 Friday.

“Today was the second day after a (cold) front and it was really slick and calm, so they didn’t bite as well,” Walters said. “Also, we had some muddy water and I didn’t relocate them until (late in the day).

“At 4:30, I moved farther into the little cove I was fishing and caught five fish in a row and saw more swimming by. I caught a good bag on Day 1 and I knew I couldn’t do that again unless something magic happened.”

Charles Proctor of Conway, S.C., is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 9-0 largemouth.

Paul Gelles of Pingree, Idaho, won the co-angler division with a two-day total of 21-2. Gelles placed 14th on Day 1 with 10-13 and added 10-5 Friday to claim the victory. Charles Crumpton of Ocklawaha, Fla., won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass competition among co-anglers with a 9-1 largemouth.

The Top 10 anglers in the boater division will take off at 6:45 a.m. ET Saturday from Venetian Gardens (Ski Beach). The weigh-in will be held at Bass Pro Shops in Orlando at 4 p.m.

The Falcon Rods Bassmaster Opens Angler of the Year title will award a $10,000 prize to the overall points winner in the boater division. The top co-angler will have entry fees into the Opens division of his or her choice fully paid for a value of approximately $5,400.

Lake County and the City of Leesburg are hosting the tournament.
