Las Vegas, Nev. – October 14, 2020 – When the smoke had cleared on one of the toughest U.S. Open Championships to date, one man stood free of the flames; that man was Tim Klinger of Boulder City, Nev., a local pro and former FLW Tour Champion who has faced fires of his own in the fickle sport that is professional bass fishing.

Klinger started the final day of the 2020 Bass Cat Boats / Mercury Marine WON Bass U.S. Open with 21.15 pounds; less than a pound off the pace set by Las Vegas’ Cody Steckel who showed consistency over the first two days, posting a total of 22.03 pounds.

Klinger started the tournament with a 7.66-pound limit on day one that found him in 42nd place for the day.  However, he brought the heaviest five fish limit of the tournament to the scales on day two; a 13.49-pound effort that included a five-pounder, to move to second place.  On the final day, when it counted the most, he posted the only double-digit limit of the day, a 10.92-pound bag, bringing his three-day total to 32.07 pounds, claiming his first U.S. Open Championship.

With that victory, he earned the $100,000 cash prize and the keys to a 2021 Bass Cat Puma FTB, powered by a 250 horsepower Mercury ProXS outboard valued at $64,000 presented to him by Rick Pierce, president of Bass Cat Boats.

Klinger was visibly moved as he was named the champion.  “I’ve wanted to win this tournament for a lot of years, and I’ve been close before, but this is especially sweet,” he said.  “To be able to win this while my Dad is still with us means the world to me; I could never win another tournament again and be happy that he got to see it.”

Klinger said that his winning combination was an 8.5-inch Berkley PowerBait curlytail worm on 5/16 to 1/2-ounce tungsten weights and a 4/0 Hayabusa worm HD Worm Hook in two colors, motor oil and green pumpkin.  He also mixed in a PowerBait Chigger Craw to add a few fish.

He spent half of the first day in the Vegas Wash area but ran to a backup area in the Overton arm.  “I found a spot that had some deep trees on it many years ago when the lake was low, and I visited it several times, they finally showed up on it late yesterday,” he said.  “I was fishing in 18 feet of water, and had it all to myself, there wasn’t a boat within a half mile of me; I still can’t believe this is real.”

Former U.S. Open Roy Hawk, from Lake Havasu City, Ariz., posted a 9.60-pound limit on day three to leap to spots to finish second for the event with 29.01 pounds, and claim $22,000 in cash.  He said he fished the Vegas Wash, targeting schooling fish early, then turned to jigs, worms and dropshot rigs to fill his limits each day.  “I used an Evergreen Showerblows and a Duo Realis Pencil 110 – both in shad patterns,” he said. “I really wanted to win, but I am absolutely pleased to finish second to Timmy; he really deserves it, and I’m really happy for him.”

Steckel stumbled for the first time this week, posting 6.32 pounds to bring his total to 28.35 pounds, finishing in third place.  Fourth place went to Whittier, Calif. pro Scott Helleson with 25.06 pounds, and Dennis Kolender, of Santee, Calif. finished fifth with 24.30 pounds.

The AAA division winner was Hector Gracia from Poway, Calif.  He posted a three-day total of 24.09 pounds to earn the title of WON Bass U.S. Open Champion and $10,600 in cash and prizes valued at more than $5,000.  “This is amazing to win because the U.S. Open is such a grind,” he said. “I want to thank my boaters for a great week, I lost my dad recently, this is for him.”

Second place in the AAA Division ended in a tie, Folsom, Calif. angler Westly Gritts and Kevin Burgess of Kingman, Ariz. with 23.76 pounds each.  Fourth place went to day one leader Luke Spreitzer of Phoenix, Ariz. with 23.51 pounds, and rounding out the top five was Clearlake, Calif. angler Dylan Watson with 23.32 pounds.

Cody Steckel Takes over Lead of the 2020 WON Bass U.S. Open on Day Two

0

Las Vegas, Nev. – October 13, 2020 – The WON Bass U.S. Open has a reputation of being the toughest tournament in the country. A look at the history of this event at Lake Mead will show that 11 pounds a day will give an angler a shot at claiming the U.S. Open title most years.  With a second consecutive solid performance at a stingy Lake Mead, Cody Steckel placed 10.59 pounds on the scale to back up his 11.44-pound day one to take the lead with 22.03 pounds heading into the final day.

He will have his work cut out for him to claim the trophy, as noted desert legend and two-time FLW Tour Champion Tim Klinger from Boulder City, Nev. is hot on his heels.  Klinger posted the biggest limit of the event thus far with a 13.49-pound performance that put him in second place with 21.15 pounds; less than a pound behind the leader.

Steckel, who landed in second place yesterday, said that he was able to fish the same areas as day one, however, the day did not develop as quickly.  “I had my limit by 11:00 yesterday, but didn’t get a bite until 10:00 today,” said Steckel.  “I was able to work around and find them again, but it took a little longer.”

The Las Vegas based angler said he felt good about his chances, however.  “I feel like my area has enough fish to finish this tomorrow,” he said.  “I think I can go out there and grind out what I need, 11 more pounds and I think I can do it.”

Klinger, who posted a little over seven pounds on day one, said that he fished the same areas both days.  “I’m making a fairly long run, so I’m committed to the area,” he said.  “I made three stops on a spot I caught two pounders on yesterday, and on my third visit, the big ones were there.  I really think I can pull another good sack out of there tomorrow.”

Former U.S. Open Champion, Roy Hawk caught another 9-pound limit on the board to bring his total to 19.21 pounds, within two pounds of claiming his second title.  “I’m fishing fairly close to takeoff, so I’ll have plenty of time to fish,” he said.  “I feel like I have a chance, anything can happen.”

Rounding out the top five in the pro division were David Baca with a two-day total of 19.01 pounds and Carl Limbrick Jr. stands fifth with 17.65 pounds.

On the AAA side, Dylan Watson tops the field with a two-day total of 19.94 pounds. Westly Gits placed second with 19.64 pounds. He is followed by Steve Boyce in third place with 17.66 pounds.  Fourth place went to Kyle Charles, who moved up one spot to fourth place with 17.52 pounds. Rounding out the top five is Hector Garcia with 17.46 pounds.

Complete day two standings can be found attached.

The final day of the 2020 WON Bass US Open will occur tomorrow, and on the final day, the pro winner will receive $100,000 cash and the keys to a 2020 Bass Cat Puma FTD powered by a Mercury Pro XS 250 Four Stroke outboard valued at $64,000.  The live broadcast, presented by KUIU and Phenix Rods will bring you the weigh-in at Callville Bay Marina, access the activity at http://www.wonbass.com.

Fall Bonanza Could Await Bassmaster Elite Anglers At Chickamauga Lake

Fall Bonanza Could Await Bassmaster Elite Anglers At Chickamauga Lake

[print_link]

DAYTON, Tenn. Buddy Gross is hoping everything’s cool at the Guaranteed Rate Bassmaster Elite at Chickamauga Lake; but not for any concern over camaraderie or sportsmanship. Rather, the Elite Series rookie from Chickamauga, Ga., is eager for a healthy dose of the seasonal chill.

Competition days will be Oct. 16-19 with daily takeoffs from Dayton Boat Dock at 7:30 a.m. ET and weigh-ins each day at Point Park at 3:30 p.m.

As Gross explained, this Tennessee River reservoir could be on the verge of breaking loose, or it could play coy. It all depends on the weather.

“The fish go through that transition when they don’t want to bite until the water cools,” Gross said. “Then they go on a feeding frenzy until the water turns cold. I think we’re going to be in that window where we’re just a little early for a great bite; we’re probably going to have a good bite.”

It is possible that a recent cooling trend in the eastern U.S. might favorably influence Chickamauga’s bass. The key factor will be sustained periods of cooler weather, particularly the overnight lows that leave mornings brisk and the fish active.

“I’m hoping we get a piece of that while we’re there,” Gross said. “Chickamauga’s a great place to fish when it cools down. We’re going to have some 40-degree nights so we should get some water temperatures in the 60s, so it should be good.”

The lake stretches 58.9 miles from Watts Bar Dam to its namesake dam, completed in 1940. Covering 36,240 surface acres with a maximum depth of 72 feet, Chickamauga is feeling the effects of the fall drawdown — but not as drastically as usual.

“By Oct. 15, the water level is supposed to be down (to winter pool), but I don’t think we’ll quite be there this year,” Gross said. “I’m figuring we’re only going to be a foot and a half low.”

Gross, who placed third at last year’s Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open at Chickamauga Lake, said the drawdown positively impacts the fishing scene by pulling fish into tighter groups. The downside is the navigational challenge.

“A lot of the backwater becomes harder to access; you have to actually know how to get in,” Gross said. “Instead of just running across a bar, you’re going to have to figure out how to get in there on the deeper side.”

That’s a key point, as Gross said he expects a primarily shallow-water event — 15 feet or less. This will bring a range of fall standards like spinnerbaits, bladed jigs, lipless crankbaits and topwater lures to the forefront.

Gross also believes that Chickamauga will offer flipping, punching and frogging opportunities wherever grass avails. As he explains, despite significant water management fluctuation, the lake’s shallower upper end sees longer periods during which sunlight reaches the bottom. Therefore, it typically holds significantly more grass than the deeper lower end.

“Shellbeds are also good this time of year,” he said. “Also, anything contour-related that has something going back like ditch mouths can be good. A lot of those (smaller) creeks don’t have much water in them, so when the water draws down, it puts them out there in mouths.

While a large percentage of the field will likely focus on the shallow game, Gross said there will still be some fish out deep. Anglers throwing swimbaits, jerkbaits and drop shots around brush, rockpiles and underwater islands in about 20 feet could find themselves weighing competitive bags, but this option probably won’t offer the consistency of the shallow zone.

“The entire lake will be in play, dam to dam and even some of the tributary rivers and creeks,” Gross said. “There’s really not a bad place to fish on Chickamauga right now.”

It’s good to have options, but fall usually finds bass on the move, chasing bait. That means the notion of camping on one spot for multiple days rarely works, especially not during a year that has seen atypically high fishing pressure.

“I think it will take at least three or four places, more than likely,” Gross said. “I don’t think one spot is going to last that long. Every time I’ve done well in the fall, I’ve had multiple places.

“COVID-19 has changed fishing because more people have fished all year and the fish have seen so many baits. You’re really going to have to fish this time around. There won’t be any gimmes.”

Gross estimated it will take 15 to 16 pounds a day to make the final cut, while 18 a day could earn the blue trophy and the $100,000 first-place prize. But factoring in the big Florida-strain largemouth bass stocked in Chickamauga, he wouldn’t be surprised to see a four-day winning weight of 90 pounds.

“The key will be to find the food source; and not just shad, it could also be a bream deal,” Gross said. “They’re going to start eating in the next couple of weeks for sure.

“It could turn on. It’s really a matter of the weather.”

Bassmaster LIVE will cover the event each day on Bassmaster.com and ESPN3. Semifinal Sunday will feature additional live coverage on ESPN2. Check local listings for details.

The tournament is being hosted by the Rhea County Economic Development & Tourism Council.

Eastanollee’s Morrow Wins Two-Day Phoenix Bass Fishing League event on Lake Hartwell

Co-angler Victory Goes to Hiawassee’s McClure

[print_link]

ANDERSON, S.C. (Oct. 13, 2020) Boater Troy Morrow of Eastanollee, Georgia, brought a two-day total of 10 bass to the scale weighing 32 pounds even, to win the Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine Savannah River Division Super-Tournament at Lake Hartwell

presented by Fish-Intel. For his victory, Morrow earned $6,415.

I didn’t start catching fish until after 9 a.m, but I had found a spot in practice with some big ones on a timber line,” said Morrow. “I broke a big one off yesterday that would have really helped but I went back today and they were schooling so I caught them all on top.”

Morrow comes from a recent Toyota Series win on Lake Norman, only a few short weeks ago.

“On Hartwell, it all depends on what bait the fish are currently eating,” Morrow continued. “These were eating small fish so I threw small topwater baits. Normally if you can find them eating on the bluebacks, you go with pencil poppers, big sammies and your bigger walking baits.”

Morrow said if he had to name his key bait it would be the Zoom Shakey Head Worm in green-pumpkin color.

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament as follows:

1st:       Troy Morrow of Eastonellee, Ga.,10 bass, 32-0, $6,415

2nd:      Derek Lehtonen of Woodruff, S.C., 10 bass, 28-4, $3,708

Co-angler Victory Goes to Vonore’s Lemons

DAYTON, Tenn. (Oct. 12, 2020) Boater Drew Boggs of Lebanon, Tennessee, brought a three-day total of 15 bass to the scale weighing 40 pounds, 11 ounces to win the no-entry fee Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine Regional Championship at Lake Chickamauga. “This is my first time in a long time to come out on top, and I’ve been trying hard,” said Boggs. “It’s been a grind with the drop in water levels, so I’m super excited with what I weighed in today.”

Boggs said he found his winning fish in the middle part of the lake, fishing shallow, throwing a swimbait, buzzbait and a squarebill crankbait.

“I was fishing water that hadn’t been fished and getting to places other people hadn’t been to – I think that made the biggest difference,” continued Boggs. “I’m so excited – this will be my third All-American tournament to compete in and I can’t wait,” said Boggs.

The top six boaters that qualified for 2021 Phoenix Bass Fishing League All-American were:

Montgomery Wins Day One Shotgun Round at General Tire World Championship on Discovery

Montgomery Wins Day One Shotgun Round at General Tire World Championship on Discovery

South Carolina pro Advances Directly to Sudden Death Round, Remaining Seven Anglers to Compete in Elimination Round

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (Oct. 12, 2020) – Pro Andy Montgomery of Blacksburg, South Carolina, caught 19 bass totaling 42 pounds, 6 ounces to win the opening Shotgun Round of competition at the General Tire World Championship in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. For the win, Montgomery now advances directly into the Sudden Death Round of competition in the six-day championship bass tournament that showcases 16 of the best bass anglers from around the world competing for a top prize of $100,000.

The opening day of competition on Discovery showcased the eight competing anglers in Group 1 fishing on Northern Minnesota’s Lake Wabana. Montgomery had a big third-period rally, catching 10 bass for 23-12 in the final period to surpass Greg Vinson and Jordan Lee and earn the win by a narrow 1-pound, 4-ounce margin.

“For once, on a tournament day, everything played out just like I hoped it would,” Montgomery said in his post-game press conference. “I wanted to put the heat on the docks early, before others got a chance to fish them. I was able to do that and caught all of the largemouth that I could. I also knew coming into this that I was going to have to catch smallmouth somehow. I went a little while before I caught one, but once I finally did my confidence went through the roof because I caught it shallow, and it was a pattern that I could run across the lake.

“I mainly threw a lot of moving baits,” Montgomery continued. “I thought I’d maybe catch them deep on a drop-shot rig, but the wind took that away. So, I bounced back and forth throughout the day – from the docks out to the underwater islands, then back to the docks, then back to the islands. Timing was extremely important, and it was really good for me today.”

Montgomery said that he caught his largemouth on the docks with a Strike King Tour Grade Skipping Jig with a matching Rage Bug trailer. When fishing for smallmouth on the offshore islands, he threw a small Strike King Thunder Cricket vibrating jig and an unnamed swimbait.

“The third period was very important, and I felt like I had a really good gameplan,” Montgomery said. “I had the smallmouth pattern established, but I also had some docks in my mind that I had watched another competitor fish, but I felt like I could still catch some fish off of them. So, I re-fished those and caught a few key fish and then when they were done I didn’t try to force it – I went back offshore to the smallmouth.”

Montgomery now becomes the first angler to advance directly into the Sudden Death Round, a feat that he is proud of, but according to him there is still a lot of work left to be done.

“There is just something about this World Championship… I’ve fished a lot of big tournaments before. FLW Cups, Classics, I’ve fished them all. But there is something about this event, I just want to win it so badly. That is the only reason I’m here,” Montgomery went on to say.

The standings after Saturday’s airing of the Day One Shotgun Round (Group 1) are:

1st:          Andy Montgomery of Blacksburg, S.C., 19 bass, 42-6
2nd:         Jordan Lee of Cullman, Ala., 23 bass, 41-2
3rd:         Greg Vinson of Wetumpka, Ala., 14 bass, 39-12
4th:         Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., 11 bass, 28-9
5th:         Casey Ashley of Donalds, S.C., seven bass, 14-11
6th:         Takahiro Omori of Tokyo, Japan, eight bass, 14-4
7th:         Brent Ehrler of Redlands, Calif., seven bass, 13-7
8th:         Bobby Lane of Lakeland,  Fla., five bass, 10-1

Montgomery also caught the Berkley Big Bass of the day, a 4-pound, 2-ounce largemouth.

Overall, there were 94 bass weighing 204 pounds, 4 ounces caught by the eight pros on day one of competition on Wabana Lake.

The 2020 Major League Fishing General Tire World Championship in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, is hosted by Visit Grand Rapids.

In MLF General Tire World Championship competition, the full field of 16 pro anglers is split into two groups of eight – Group 1 and Group 2. Group 1 competes in a Shotgun Round on day one, Group 2 on day two, with the winners of each day advancing directly to the Sudden Death Round. The remaining seven anglers from each group carry their total weight on to the Elimination Round competition. The three anglers from each group with the highest cumulative two-day weight will advance to the Sudden Death Round – eight anglers total.

During the Sudden Death round, the eight anglers that advanced from the Shotgun and Elimination Rounds compete to become one of the first six to reach a qualifying weight – determined by MLF officials. The top six anglers then advance to the final Championship Round – where weights are zeroed and the highest total weight at the end of competition wins and will be declared World Champion.

Next week’s episode of the General Tire World Championship will feature Group 2 – Michael Neal, Edwin Evers, Jacob Wheeler, Mark Rose, Jeff Sprague, Jared Lintner, Cody Meyer and Jacob Powroznik – competing on Pokegama Lake.
