Palaniuk Takes Lead At Bassmaster Elite Event On Santee Cooper

CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. — Locating big-fish areas and remaining mobile enabled Brandon Palaniuk of Rathdrum, Idaho, to take the Day 2 lead of the Bassmaster Elite at Santee Cooper Lakes brought to you by the United States Marine Corps with 39 pounds, 14 ounces.

After placing second on Day 1 with 21-1, Palaniuk added 18-13 Friday.

Palaniuk, who claimed his fourth Elite Series win on Lake Champlain earlier this season, caught two of his keepers on a jerkbait, one on a 5-inch X-Zone Swammer rigged on a 1/2-ounce VMC swimbait head and two on a punch rig comprising an X-Zone Muscle Back Finesse Craw on a 3/0 VMC Heavy Duty Flippin’ Hook with a 1 1/4-ounce weight.

Rotating through 10 to 12 spots within a 2-mile area on the upper end of Lake Marion, Palaniuk anchored today’s limit with a 6-6 that he caught while punching shortly before 2 o’clock. Proximity, he said, confirmed he was in the right area.

“I caught the 7-9 I had yesterday maybe 5 feet from where I had a 4-pounder in practice, and then today, I caught a 6-5 maybe 30 feet from where I caught that big fish yesterday,” Palaniuk said. “It’s definitely an area that’s holding the right size fish; I just need to catch five of them.”

Palaniuk said the challenging conditions of the fall transition have required significant consideration, as the fish are in a completely different seasonal mode than they would have been during the event’s originally scheduled dates of April 16-19. When the pandemic required rescheduling, Palaniuk went to work studying for an autumn tournament.

“I came here and pre-practiced in January, which has nothing to do with now,” he said. “I was practicing for an April event, so where I’m actually catching them, I never looked at in pre-practice.

“Coming into this event, I knew I had to put myself around fish, so I researched every article I could find online and I came up with about five or six areas that were frequently mentioned, and that’s where I spent my time in practice. I’ve just continued to narrow it down every day.”

Continuously rotating through his spots gave Palaniuk the best chances of getting his timing right.

“It was literally just showing up at the right place when those fish are ready to feed and then executing when you get that opportunity,” he said. “I haven’t been able to get it dialed in to say, ‘I need to go do this at this time of day’ — I literally have to fish what’s in front of me.”

That game plan mostly worked well, but despite a morning disappointment, Palaniuk kept himself mentally relaxed.

“I didn’t execute as well as I did yesterday — I caught two fish on a jerkbait yesterday,” Palaniuk said. “Today, I lost a big one but I felt like, mentally, I was fishing better. I was way calmer, I was not rushing anything. I was just settling in and taking my time.

“It was actually very similar to how I felt the last day at Champlain. If I can just keep doing that, I feel like I will at least have a chance and then the fish just have to do their part.”

Day 1 leader Carl Jocumsen is in second place with 37-15. After sacking up the event’s biggest bag — 25-8 — on Thursday, the pro from Queensland, Australia, added 12-7 Friday.

“That’s the difference between fishing clean and missing some bites,” Jocumsen said. “I really feel like I’m in the right area and I just didn’t capitalize on those opportunities. I definitely got the bites to have another really good day.”

“I had my head down, grinding with five minutes to go before I had to run back and I cracked a 2 1/2- to 3-pounder and saved the day. There’s two more days to fish, this place has them, I’m around them and I’m going to do everything I can to put them in the boat tomorrow.”

Jocumsen lost a big fish on the white ChatterBait he used on Day 1 and ended up catching all of his weight on a black and blue Molix SV craw rigged on a 4/0 hook.

Derek Hudnall of Baton Rouge, La., is in third with 35-10. After weighing 15-11 on Day 1, he added 19-5. Essential to his success was a 7-12 that bit on the same tree from which he lost a 5-pounder on his previous flip.

“The bites are few and far between, I’m fishing for big fish,” Hudnall said. “I’m around a lot of big ones. More than that is possible where I’m at if I can just make the right casts.”

Targeting cypress trees on the upper end of Lake Marion, Hudnall said the key to his area’s productivity is a set of drains that keep the water moving. He’s catching his fish on a wacky-rigged Missile Baits 48.

Jeff Gustafson of Keewatin, Canada, is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 9-7.

The Top 40 anglers advanced to Saturday’s semi-final round. The remaining Top 10 will go on to fish Championship Sunday.

Saturday’s takeoff is scheduled for 7:05 a.m. ET at John C. Land III Sport Fishing Facility. The weigh-in will be held back at the facility at 3.20 p.m.

Live coverage of the event will be available starting at 7:30 a.m. on Bassmaster LIVE at Bassmaster.com and ESPN3.

The tournament is being hosted by the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce.

MCGOWAN WINS HOBIE COOSA RIVER CHAIN B.O.S. ANCHORED BY POWER-POLE

MCGOWAN WINS HOBIE COOSA RIVER CHAIN B.O.S. ANCHORED BY POWER-POLE

Hometown angler uses local knowledge to hold off Joshua Sharp and Lance Coley. All three qualify for Hobie’s Tournament of Champions in Knoxville, TN

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (October 9, 2020) – With expansive waters, seemingly unending shoreline and a mix of largemouths plus “magnum” spotted bass to target, there was little doubt the Coosa River Chain Hobie Bass Open Series (B.O.S.) Anchored by Power-Pole was going to be an exciting contest. At stake was not only the event title, but final Angler of the Year (A.O.Y.) points, plus three qualifying spots for Hobie’s Tournament of Champions (TOC) to be held in Knoxville, Tennessee, on November 14 and 15.

“This was our last open event of the season and it really lived up to expectations,” said Tournament Director A.J. McWhorter. “We had 87 kayak anglers measure and release 655 bass with our top three finishers separated by just two inches. The fishing was great, Gadsden, AL offered plenty of support as our home base, and our anglers battled it out on the water until the final minutes. What a great way and awesome place to wrap up these events.”

In the end, Coley McGowan, 25, a Gadsden, Alabama native, took home the crown with 181 total inches of catch and release largemouth bass for the two-day event. Joshua Sharp, 26, of Franklin, Tennessee, finished second, and Lance Coley, 38 of Calera, Alabama, carried off the bronze. All three anglers also qualified for the Hobie TOC. For their efforts, McGowan took home $5,100, Sharpe earned $2,750 and Coley pocketed $1,600 as the tourney paid out $16,100 through ninth place. Eric Siddiqi took home Bassin’ Big Bass honors and $348 for a 22-inch largemouth that inhaled a Z-Man ChatterBait early on Day 1.

“I think having local knowledge helped a lot in this tournament,” said McGowan. “There’s a ton of water to cover on this river and its impoundments. If the fish aren’t where you expect them to be after a couple days of practice fishing, it’s good to have a few options to explore.”

That was exactly the scenario McGowan faced early on Day 1 when a stretch of water that had proved productive during pre-fishing came up cold. “We had a full moon leading into the tourney, cooler conditions than in practice, and a few boats had worked over the area where I planned to fish,” explained McGowan. “I don’t know if those fish had shut down or moved on, but they weren’t cooperating, so I just put my head down and kept covering water to scrape up what I could.”

At the end of Day 1 McGowan was in sixth place. Fortunately, on Day 2, the bass were right back where he expected them to be – and they started hitting immediately. “They were running a little bigger than I expected,” said McGowan, “and they were more numerous. In fact, I had my limit by 9 a.m. and started culling from there.”

McGowan tossed spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and Z-Man ChatterBaits around shad in the mornings and switched to Bo’s Jigs and green pumpkin Paca craw trailers for the afternoons. “Most of my action related to grass and wood,” he stated. “I was throwing 5 to 10 feet outside the grass lines where there was some current, laydowns, stumps and trees. The fish were paralleling grass in mornings and super-glued to the wood in the afternoons.”

Sharp spent most of his time waking a Santone Lures ½-ounce Pretender Series spinnerbait in shallow water and flipping laydowns with a beaver-style bait on a ½-ounce jighead. “I had to go real shallow to find those fish,” he said.

Finishing in 15th place on Day 1, Sharp was optimistic about his chances on Day 2. Like McGowan, he had started slowly but a strong finish brought hope and he would bang out 98.5 inches of bass to lead the pack on Day 2, while clawing his way to the second spot. With just five minutes to go in the event, Sharp connected with a bass that looked to be over 20 inches long, but it came unbuttoned almost immediately after the hookset. “That one might have put me over the top,” he conceded, “but it slipped the jig and just kept swimming. Still, I rang up my best scores both for a single day and a tournament total, so I’m thrilled with my effort. It was a really great weekend.”

Coley, like McGowan, said that being on his home waters may have provided an edge. While most anglers targeted largemouths, he set his sights on the Coosa River’s famed “magnum” spotted bass. “I knew it was going to be tough going against those largemouths,” he explained, “but I had a stretch with a good stack of spots so I stuck with them and it worked out pretty good. I threw a variety of reaction baits including a RedLine spinnerbait. When they got smart on those, I switched to crankbaits and Z-Man ChatterBaits and culled up. I was working a small stretch of water, letting it rest, and then working it again.”

While the scores showed how close the competition was in this event, McGowan said that it was even closer than he could have imagined. “I broke a paddle on a rock or stump around 2 p.m. on Day 2, and that effectively ended my fishing,” he revealed. “For the rest of the way, I had to watch the leaderboard to see if my score would hold up. That certainly made things a little tense.”

McGowan and Coley were all competing in their first Hobie B.O.S. Anchored by PowerPole event, and all three came away impressed.

“It was great to see some of the biggest names in kayak bass fishing show up, and to see from how far away people were willing to come to compete,” said McGowan. “I met people from Iowa, Ohio and the Northeast. If it’s top level competition you want, this is the place to be.”

Sharp called the Coosa River Chain event “the best kayak tournament I’ve ever fished,” adding that he appreciated how it ran so smoothly, that other anglers were accepting of newcomers to the circuit, and that protocols were in place throughout the tournament to keep anglers safe during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Coley, meanwhile, enjoyed the camaraderie and testing his skills against some of the “big guns” in kayak bass fishing. “I also liked how helpful and friendly everyone seemed to be,” he said. “That’s the nature of this sport. Everyone seems pretty cool.”

Of course, the Hobie B.O.S. series is driven by amazing supporters and sponsors, in addition to an unparalleled fleet of elite kayak bass anglers, a point McWhorter made clear at the final open event award ceremony.

“It really has been an amazing year for this Hobie series and I’d like to give a big shout out to all the anglers who supported us, everyone following and sharing these events on social media, and our amazing sponsors: Power-Pole, AFTCO, Lowrance, Scotty, NRS, Daiwa, Bassin’ Magazine, Engel Coolers, Dakota Lithium, Hobie Polarized [TS1] and Aqua-Vu,” summed up McWhorter. “In nine two-day opens, we qualified 27 anglers from across the country for our Tournament of Champions in Knoxville, TN. Over the next few days, we’ll be tallying A.O.Y. points and announcing the next 20 qualifiers. For those who didn’t make the cut by that point, we still have one last qualifying event, the Hobie B.O.S. Shootout Anchored by Power Pole, a single-day T.O.C. qualifying event with payouts and a $150 entry fee to be held on Lake Tellico, in Knoxville, on Friday, Nov. 13.”

Jocumsen Grabs Lead With Big Limit At Bassmaster Elite Event On Santee Cooper

Queensland, Australia native Carl Jocumsen weighed in 25 pounds, 8 ounces to take the Day 1 lead in the 2020 Bassmaster Elite at Santee Cooper Lakes brought to you by the United States Marine Corps.

Jocumsen Grabs Lead With Big Limit At Bassmaster Elite Event On Santee Cooper

[print_link]

CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. — Carl Jocumsen is known for his aggressive fishing style, but it was actually a healthy dose of caution that led him to three of the five fish he needed to take the Day 1 lead of the Bassmaster Elite at Santee Cooper Lakes brought to you by the United States Marine Corps with 25 pounds, 8 ounces.

The veteran pro from Queensland, Australia, who captured his first Elite Series win last year on Oklahoma’s Lake Tenkiller, said he started his practice with a well-founded respect for Santee Cooper’s minefield of submerged stumps. Doing so compelled him to spend more time idling.

“When you roll up to a place like this, it is scary,” Jocumsen said. “When I first launched at the ramp (in practice), I didn’t even know if you could get up on pad going out of the ramp. To go from that to a bag like this is just a magical day.

“It actually helped me not knowing this place because I got to idle some areas, not knowing how to get back in. That’s how I found a couple of little magical spots.”

With a limit that included a 6-15 and a 6-3, Jocumsen started in the midsection of Lake Marion, which along with Lake Moultrie to the south, comprises the Santee Cooper Lakes (linked by a diversion canal). His main area was a grass-lined depression that dropped from 2 feet to 4 1/2.

“If you ran the area, you would never see it, but I idled it because I was worried about getting into the back,” Jocumsen said. “I saw the grass on my Humminbird, and I think that’s what’s holding them.”

In practice, this spot hosted intense afternoon schooling action and produced several big bites. Today, Jocumsen saw minimal surface activity but caught one of his bigger fish from the schoolers.

“I got enough bites there in practice to think, ‘This is the perfect plan: early-morning schooling fish, and then go fish cover.’ It wasn’t as good as I thought it would be, but I caught a 5-, a 4- and a (3-pounder) by 10 o’clock.

“It wasn’t fast and furious, they only schooled once. The rest, I just caught flipping that area. I had it all to myself.”

After determining that his starting spot had cooled, Jocumsen ran to Marion’s north end where he flipped cypress trees. On his third flip, he caught a 6 1/2 and then filled his limit with a 2 1/2.

“Once I relaxed, I slowed down and just started fishing new areas,” Jocumsen said. “I caught another 6-plus around 12:30 and I was done.”

Jocumsen used a white Z-Man JackHammer ChatterBait with a white Yamamoto Zako trailer for the schooling fish. He caught his flipping fish on a black and blue Molix SV craw rigged on a 4/0 hook.

“It’s really how I’m working the bait; I figured out how they want it when I’m flipping the cover,” Jocumsen said. “A lot of guys do it a certain way, and I figured out what they wanted. Every single bass has bit the exact same way.”

Carrying a lead of 4-7 into Friday’s second round, Jocumsen said his productivity afforded him time to test a few areas far upriver. These distant spots did not produce, but eliminating the options allowed him to narrow his Day 2 plan.

Jocumsen is not predicting another 20-pound bag, but with Santee Cooper holding a strong population of stocked Florida-strain largemouth, he’s certainly not ruling it out.

“In practice, I fought a legitimate 9- to 10-pounder doing the same thing, so I know any single cast has the potential for a double-digit fish,” Jocumsen said. “My (main) area could get even better tomorrow, or it might not produce a fish.

“For me to catch another bag like that, I kinda need to have five in the well, because I have to slow down. Today, I eliminated a lot of areas and I gained two new areas, so I feel good for tomorrow.”

Brandon Palaniuk of Rathdrum, Idaho, is in second place with 21-1. Anchoring his bag with a 7-9 that bit around 10 a.m., Palaniuk said he caught most of his weight between 10 and noon.

“I think I just happened to roll up at the right places at the right time today,” he said. “I was trying to cover water. I started all the way down by the (Santee Dam) and went all the way up above the Interstate-95 Bridge this afternoon.

“I’m keying in on certain places, but I’m not married to one area. There’s not one specific thing I’m looking for. I’m not dialed in; I just happened to get the right bites today.”

Palaniuk said he caught his fish on three different baits today, with flipping presentations producing most of his weight.

Austin Felix of Eden Prairie, Minn., is in third place with 20-9. Spending most of his day on a 3-mile-long stretch, Felix caught his bass off cypress trees, docks and shellbars — all in about 4 feet of water. He also caught a couple of his keepers in deep holes of about 10 feet

“It was pretty consistent all day; I had 14 pounds by 9 o’clock and then slowly culled my way up,” Felix said. “I caught a 6-pounder at noon and just started looking for new stuff.”

Felix said he caught his fish on a Texas-rigged worm. A slow dragging presentation worked best.

“I think a lot of people are fishing over these fish,” Felix said.

Palaniuk is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the week honors with his 7-9.

Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 7:05 a.m. ET from John C. Land III Sport Fishing Facility. The weigh-in will be held back at the facility at 3:20 p.m. After Friday’s weigh-in, only the Top 40 remaining anglers will advance to Saturday’s semifinal round.

Live coverage of the event will be available starting at 7 a.m. on Bassmaster LIVE at Bassmaster.com and ESPN3.

The tournament is being hosted by the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce.

Eight Anglers Compete at Wabana Lake in Grand Rapids, Minnesota on Day One Shotgun Round

[print_link]

TULSA, Okla. (Oct. 8, 2020) – The Major League Fishing (MLF) 2020 General Tire World Championship is set to premiere with a two-hour episode this Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7 a.m. EDT on Discovery. The event, shot over six days in late July in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, showcases 16 MLF pro anglers culminating the 2020 Cup season and competing for a top prize of $100,000.

Saturday’s episode features the first eight anglers (Group A) competing on the opening day Shotgun Round at Wabana Lake, a 2,221-acre fishery that is known for having a great mix of both largemouth and smallmouth bass.

“Wabana Lake is a lake that is very small in size, but large in stature,” said Marty Stone, MLF Director of Event Research and Program Analyst. “It’s only a touch over 2,000 acres, but it has a large quantity of cover and a large population of fish. It’s a very visual lake, with a good 50-50 mix of largemouth and smallmouth. Guys can fish a combination of deep and shallow there.

“The key factor on Wabana Lake is all of the sunken islands,” Stone continued. “The boat docks tend to play, but there aren’t many of them. Wabana has more sunken islands that most of the lakes we fish, and the fish certainly like to set up shop there. It’s an interesting fishery that is going to make for a very exciting episode.”

The Eight Anglers in Group A that compete Saturday on Day One of the MLF General Tire World Championship are:

  • Casey Ashley of Donalds, S.C.
  • Brent Ehrler of Redlands, Calif.

Toledo Bend Hosts B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional

MANY, La. — Grass-roots anglers from eight states will take to the iconic waters of the Toledo Bend Reservoir Oct. 14-16, 2020 for the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional. Toledo Bend recently ranked No. 6 on Bassmaster Magazine’s list of Top 25 Best Bass Lakes of the Decade.

The tournament is one of five regional championship events B.A.S.S. Nation originally scheduled around the country this year. Anglers will be competing for cash prizes and a spot in the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship, Nov. 11-13 on Alabama’s Pickwick Lake.

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Keith Combs, of Huntington, Texas, expects good fishing and pleasant weather for the Central Regional.

“October is one of my favorite months to fish in that part of the country,” Combs said. “It should be a good tournament. There will be a lot of bass caught.”

He noted the weather will be cooler with nice, calm days, so the contenders won’t have to battle the wind, which can be a major problem in the spring at Toledo Bend.

Combs thinks some Toledo Bend bass will be changing from summer to fall patterns during the tournament. “It will still be kind of a blend of summer with a little bit of fall stuff mixed in,” Combs said. “There is not a lot of grass in the lake right now, so more summertime patterns may prevail in that tournament.

“There will be a lot of bass caught on typical Texas stuff, like deep cranking and throwing a 10-inch worm,” Combs said. “There will also be some bass caught shallow on topwater, and there will be a lot of schooling bass out there, too, but I don’t know if those will be the right fish to get the job done.”

The Texas pro predicts fishing should be good throughout the whole lake. “I think guys will do really well fishing south, as well as guys fishing north,” Combs said. “I think it will be spread out, so people will have options. It really depends on what water clarity a guy prefers to fish.”

Combs believes Toledo Bend’s bass fishing has been better this year than last year and has the potential to produce a 30-pound limit. “It is just that kind of a lake,” Combs said. “If you land on the right spot at the right time, it can happen really quickly. There will be some big ones caught. The big bass of the tournament will be a 9-pounder or something along those lines, I am sure of that.”

While the potential to catch a huge bag is there for the regional competitors, Combs thinks they can set their sights on a lower weight total to succeed.

“If a guy over the course of three days could average 18 to 19 pounds, he is going to be doing really well,” he said.

Competition days will start each day at 7 a.m. CT from Cypress Bend Park. Weigh-ins will be held back at the marina each day at 3 p.m., with a full field fishing Days 1 and 2 and the Top 18 in the pro and co-angler divisions competing on Championship Friday.

The tournament is being hosted by the Louisiana Office of TourismToledo Bend Lake Country, the Sabine River Authority, DeSoto Parish Tourist Commission and the Vernon Parish Tourism Commission.

Toyota Series to Host Event on Sam Rayburn Reservoir

Toyota Series to Host Event on Sam Rayburn Reservoir

[print_link]

BROOKELAND, Texas (Oct. 6, 2020) – The 2020 Toyota Series Southwestern Division will wrap up their season with a tournament next week in Brookeland, Texas, Oct. 15-17, with the Toyota Series at Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Hosted by the Jasper-Lake Sam Rayburn Area Chamber of Commerce, the three-day tournament will feature the region’s best bass-fishing pros and co-anglers casting for a top prize of up to $65,000, plus a

$35,000 bonus if the winner is a qualified Phoenix Boat owner.

“Bait fish are plentiful on Rayburn, so the majority of the bass are chasing shad right now,” said Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit angler Troy Roder of Brookeland, Texas. “However, the lake is transitioning from summer to fall, so the bigger fish have been a little more difficult to consistently find.

“The reservoir is currently between 3- to 4-foot below normal pool, but has been at that level for a while,” Roder continued. “The lake and the weather in the area has been stable, so I don’t expect that to affect the fishery much.”

Roder said there are two strategies he believes will come into play– fishing shallow or off-shore deep-structure-fishing. He said he’s been burned on the fishery by going after the wrong strategy.

“You can either fish wood and brush piles with a big worm, a football jig or a crankbait, or fish shallow in the grass and hydrilla,” Roder said. “Typically, you’d expect to find the larger fish deep-structure-fishing off-shore, but I’ve had a difficult time finding a steady amount of large bass out there.”

Roder said he is excited to return to Toyota Series competition and expects it will take a 45- to 48-pound bag over three days to win the tournament.

“I definitely put more pressure on myself during the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit events when I’m fishing for points,” said Roder. “I’m looking forward to being more laid-back and enjoying myself a little more during this tournament.”

Anglers will take off daily at 7:30 a.m. CDT from the Umphrey Family Pavilion in Brookeland. Weigh-ins will also be held at the pavilion and will begin at 3:30 p.m. Attendance is limited to competing anglers and essential staff only. Fans are encouraged to follow the event online through the “FLW Live” weigh-in broadcasts and daily coverage at FLWFishing.com.

In Toyota Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event, scaling up for every 20 boats over 160 and scaling down for every boat below 160. With a 160-boat field, pros fish for a top prize of $40,000, plus an extra $35,000 if FLW PHOENIX BONUS qualified. Co-anglers cast for the top prize of a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard (valued at $33,500). With a 260-boat field, pros fish for a top award of $65,000, plus an extra $35,000 if FLW PHOENIX BONUS qualified. Co-anglers cast for the top prize of a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard (valued at $33,500) plus $5,000 cash.

The 2020 Toyota Series consists of eight divisions – Central, Eastern, Northern, Plains, Southeastern, Southern, Southwestern and Western – each holding three regular-season events, along with the International division. Anglers who fish all three qualifiers in any of the eight divisions and finish in the top 25 will qualify for the no-entry-fee Toyota Series Championship for a shot at winning $235,000 cash, including a $35,000 FLW PHOENIX Bonus for qualified anglers. The winning co-angler at the championship earns a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard. The 2020 Toyota Series Championship will be held Dec. 3-5 on Lake Cumberland in Burnside, Kentucky, and is hosted by the Somerset Tourist & Convention Commission and the Burnside Tourism Commission.

Vince & Amanda Smith Win Bass Pro Shops Couples Series National Championship

The team of Vince and Amanda Smith of Westminster, SC won the Bass Pro Shops Couples Series National Championship event held on Lake Keowee on 9/17-18/2020. On day one, the team sacked up a five bass limit weighing 9.98 pounds. On day two, the team caught another five bass limit weighing 13.22 pounds for a total of 23.20 pounds. For the win, the Smiths took home $2,500.00.

“We caught our fish both days on swimbaits. We stayed within 2-3 miles of South Cove the entire tournament. We tried to stay on the wind-blown sides of rocky islands and shoals, maybe a few points here and there. Today (day 2) we lost two 4-pounders at the boat around 2pm. We are glad to get this win on our home water.” Smith said.

In second place the team of Brady and Brianna Kimbrell of Piedmont, SC weighed in a five bass limit on day one weighing 10.08 pounds and another five bass limit on day two weighing 12.63 pounds or a total of 22.71 pounds.

“We fished clean both days. We caught our fish both shallow and deep, but the majority of the fish came offshore. We fished the south end of the lake throwing topwater baits like whopper-ploppers.” Kimbrell said.

Taking third the team of Joe Anders and Shianne Parker of Easley, SC weighed in a five bass limit on day one weighing 11.45 pounds and another five bass limit on day two weighing 10.97 pounds for a total of 22.42 pounds.

“We lost a few fish that might have helped but we didn’t get to see them. It just wasn’t our week, but we are happy for the Smiths and the Kimbrells on their finishes. We caught most of our fish on a Damiki-rig, jerkbait, and a few on a swimbait. Shianne caught our biggest fish of the tournament.” Anders said

In fourth place the team of Scott Reeves of Easley, SC and Robin Smith of Piedmont, SC weighed in a two-day total of ten bass for 22.10 pounds.

“We caught our fish on both days on topwater from one end of the lake to the other.” Reeves said.

Rounding out the top five the team of Bo and Jessica Price of Seneca, SC weighed in a two-day total of ten bass for 20.13 pounds.

“We caught our fish as well on swimbaits with treble hooks. Jessica had to work on day one so by myself I was able to catch 7.49 pounds and on day two, with her in the boat we caught 12.64 pounds together. She caught two 3-pounders on one cast, and I was able to get those fish in the net.” Price said.

The overall largest bass of the event for the men went to William Hunter of Anderson, SC for a 6.03-pound largemouth that was caught on day one.

“I caught that big bass on a 1/4oz bitsy flip throwing on laydowns on a bluff wall around 11am. It was exciting!” Hunter said.

The largest bass for the women went to Joyce Howell of Union Point, GA for a big bass that weighed 4.24-pounds that was caught on day one as well.

“I caught that big bass on my third cast of the morning throwing a topwater bait. I think Benny was quite surprised when I said, “Get The Net”.” Howell said

In a rare tie for the 2020 season, the teams of Bryan and Sharon Waddell of Taylors, SC and Roger and JoAnn White of Newnan, GA won Anglers of the Year. Each team will receive five free entries for the 2021 season and a Power Pole shallow water anchor for their titles.

OSAGE BEACH, Mo. (Oct. 5, 2020) – The 2020 Toyota Series Plains Division will continue with a tournament this weekend in Osage Beach, Missouri, with the Toyota Series at Lake of the Ozarks. Hosted by the Tri-County Lodging Association, the three-day tournament will feature the region’s best bass-fishing pros and co-anglers casting for a top prize of up to $65,000, plus a $35,000 bonus if the winner is a qualified Phoenix Boat owner.

“Lake of the Ozarks generally fishes pretty good,” said Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit angler Casey Scanlon of Eldon, Missouri, who is looking forward to fishing his home body of water. “There was a big bass event there last weekend with a lot of big fish weighed in, so I’m expecting it to be a really good tournament.

“It’s starting to cool off a bit and the fish have started into their fall patterns, but there are a lot of bass scattered throughout the 90-mile lake, so you can really do a little bit of everything,” Scanlon continued. “Various patterns will be in play this week and that makes it one of my favorite times of the year, because you can use a lot of different tactics and be successful.”

Scanlon said the water level is about a foot and a half low – normal for this time of year – but Lake of the Ozarks is a very stable lake, so he doesn’t believe that will have a huge impact on what the fish are doing.

“I expect to see quality fish caught from 0- to 25-feet-deep,” said Scanlon. “This is a versatile fishery and I predict the top ten will be made up of guys doing a handful of different techniques in various depths.”

Scanlon said he expects a 48 to 49-pound-bag over the three-day-tournament will put anglers in the money.

“There are a lot of docks in this lake, so I expect slower-moving-baits like a Trophy Bass Company Jig or a Tackle HD Hi Def Craw – something you can fish through the cover around these docks – will be in play this weekend,” Scanlon continued. “Look for plastic worms, topwater baits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits and jigs to play a huge role in this tournament.”

Anglers will take off daily at 7 a.m. CDT from the Public Beach No. 2 Ramp in Osage Beach, Missouri. Weigh-ins will also be held at the ramp and will begin at 3 p.m. Attendance is limited to competing anglers and essential staff only.
