Walters’ Adjustment Seals Victory At Bassmaster Eastern Open On Hartwell

ANDERSON, S.C. — Making a key bait adjustment, Patrick Walters of Summerville, S.C., sacked up a Championship Friday limit of 13 pounds, 11 ounces and won the Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open at Lake Hartwell with a three-day total of 44 pounds, 5 ounces.

In keeping with Hartwell tradition, the Bassmaster Elite Series pro spent a lot of time with a Zoom Super Fluke on Days 1 and 2. However, during Friday’s competition, he switched to a Fluke Stick — a 6 1/4-inch stickworm with a deeply forked tail like the Super Fluke.

“I had been throwing the Super Fluke in white pearl on 14-pound line on a baitcaster, but when I switched over to the Fluke Stick in natural shad on a spinning rod, it was lights-out after that,” Walters said. “A little bit of bait profile change showed out this week. It was like they had never seen it.

“No one else is throwing this bait; everyone else is throwing a Fluke. They’ve been throwing a Fluke on this lake for eight years, so the fish have seen it before and they know it’s the same action. The Fluke Stick is something that gets them fired up.”

Walters, who weighed 14-15 and 15-11 the first two days, said a blistering retrieve proved most effective. Hartwell is full of blueback herring, a fast-paced species of baitfish that typically roams open waters. Mimicking the herring’s frantic appearance was the key to tempting bites.

Also important was a highly mobile game plan. Walters spent most of his time on the lake’s lower end because he felt that region held bigger spotted bass and largemouth. Although the latter eluded him Friday, Walters weighed a big largemouth the first two days, including a 4-6 on Day 1.

He targeted a mix of cane piles and long, tapering points. He got his bites in 5 to 15 feet and spent very little time on spots that did not immediately produce.

“I put that trolling motor down 50 times a day,” Walters said. “I was catching 40 fish a day, and I just got blessed enough this week to thankfully take home the trophy.”

This is Walters’ third Bassmaster victory. He and fellow University of South Carolina angler Tyler All won the 2017 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Southern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops at Winyah Bay. Walters also won the 2018 Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on the Red River.

“I really didn’t know how this week was going to pan out,” Walters said. “You can’t predict it; you just have to go fishing every single day and fish as hard as you can.

“That Red River definitely solidified that I could do it. But to do it here in Anderson, S.C., on Lake Hartwell, I absolutely love this lake. This means the world to me.”

For his efforts, Walters earned $42,267.

Jayme Rampey of Liberty, S.C., finished second with 42-6. Starting the day in 12th place with a 4-6 deficit, Rampey turned in the best performance of the final round — a 16-2 limit. Adding this to his previous weights of 10-9 and 15-11, Rampey gave Walters his biggest scare and ended just 1-15 off the winning total.

Rampey targeted cane piles, timber and flats between the launch site of Green Pond Landing and Event Center and the Hartwell Dam and caught his fish on a Zoom Super Fluke in pearl white. Essential to his success was a 7-4 Abu Garcia Veracity rod, which allowed him to get a good hook set.

“I got the presentation down yesterday — what the bigger ones wanted,” Rampey said. “The first day, I thought they wanted it fast but I was catching little ones. The second day, I slowed it down and put a little pause in it, and the bigger ones really started biting yesterday. Today, it really materialized and kept going.”

Andy Wicker of Pomaria, S.C., finished third with 40-12. His daily weights were 15-11, 13-13 and 11-4.

“I caught most of my fish this week on a Berkley Cane Walker, and I think there’s a good reason they call it the Cane Walker —that thing catches them over cane piles,” Wicker said. “I also caught some fish on a Berkley Drift Walker and a Fluke.”

Day 1 leader, Cody Hahner of Wausau, Wis., won the $750 Phoenix Boats Big Bass award for his 6-3. Walters won the $500 Garmin Tournament Rewards prize.

Topping the co-angler division, Mark Grizzle of Cumming, Ga., turned in a three-fish limit of 10-1 — the only double-digit catch of his field — and finished with a winning total of 21-10. Weighing 4-6 and 7-3 the first two days, Grizzle won by a margin of 3-4.

Fishing a Sebile Magic Swimmer and a Heddon Zara Spook, Grizzle anchored his Day 3 limit with bookend 4-pounders — one spotted bass and one largemouth. He earned $18,927.

J.W. Smith of Goose Creek, S.C., won the $250 Phoenix Boats Big Bass prize among co-anglers for his 6-0.

Jason Christie of Park Hill, Okla., took the lead in the Falcon Rods Bassmaster Opens Angler of the Year standings with 735 points. Bryan New of Belmont, N.C., is in second with 704, followed by Scott Martin of Clewiston, Fla., with 652, Justin Atkins of Florence, Ala., with 642 and Marc Frazier of Newnan, Ga., with 638.

Cumberland Hosts College Series Regular Season Finale

RUSSELL COUNTY, Ky. — The 2020 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops regular season wraps up on Kentucky’s Lake Cumberland Oct. 1-3 and will serve as the final opportunity for college anglers from across the country to qualify for the 2020 National Championship held on the Harris Chain of Lakes, Florida, Oct. 29-31.

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Mike Huff, of Corbin, Ky., predicts Lake Cumberland’s bass could be in transition from summer to fall patterns during this college event. “That time of year, it is just tough unless you get some cool weather coming in,” he said.

“There will be a lot of different ways to catch largemouth,” Huff said. “The lake will be starting to drop and the fish will get on wood.”

College anglers finding dingier water in the backs of creeks can catch largemouth on buzzbaits or by flipping creature baits to the wood.

The pro claims keeper largemouth bass are plentiful at Cumberland. “There are a ton of 2-pounders in that lake,” he said. “It is full of fish.”

The lake also contains Kentucky-strain spotted bass up to 3 pounds and smallmouth bass, which have a 12-inch minimum-length limit. Huff believes largemouth bass will be the dominant catch during the tournament, but smallmouth could also be a factor.

Effective techniques for spotted bass during the tournament will be drop shotting in brushpiles or jigging spoons under docks. One of Huff’s favorite ways to catch smallmouth is by cutting a Berkley The General stickworm in half for his Ned rig that he works about 15 feet deep along rocky main-lake points and bluff walls.

The upper and lower ends of the lake should produce plenty of action during the college event. “The (Cumberland) river will probably be a big player just because probably the fish will be easier to catch there, but the team that can figure out the lower, clear end will probably win it just because of the bigger fish on down in that area,” Huff said.

“There are six or seven major creeks on the lower end that are all good, and they all have their moments,” Huff said. He predicts Beaver, Indian and Otter creeks will generate good largemouth fishing during the tournament.

Competition will start each day at 7 a.m. CT from Halcomb’s Landing in Jamestown. Weigh-ins will be held back at the ramp each day at 3 p.m. and livestreamed on Bassmaster.com. The full field will fish Days 1 and 2, and the Top 12 teams will compete on Championship Saturday.

The tournament is being hosted by the Russell County Chamber of Commerce and State Dock on Lake Cumberland.

New for 2021: Gamakatsu® Gika Rig for Bass, a Unique Method for Fishing Plastic Baits

Tacoma, Washington (September 22, 2020) It’s a fishing rig perfected in Japan, and now the Gamakatsu Gika Rig proves a remarkable technique for catching largemouth and smallmouth bass across North America. “The Gika Rig combines the natural presentation of finesse fishing with the speed of power fishing,” said Gamakatsu Sales Manager, Jeff Roberts. “It’s a deadly blend of tactics that bass find irresistible!”
Gika Rigs use an off-set shank worm hook with an elongated drop shot weight attached directly to the eye via a solid ring. The drop shot weight features a snap that allows anglers to quickly change the size of the weight when the situation calls for it and is painted black for stealthy presentations. The weight size is permanently stamped into the side of each weight making it easy to identify when it’s time to make a change.
Changing weights controls the depth and drop speed of the bait adding to the rig’s versatility. The position of the weight allows anglers to ‘feel’ the bottom, detecting transitions in composition and helping find fish-holding structures. Another advantage is its natural swimming and dropping motion. The solid ring allows the plastic bait to float freely and rotate from side to side as it descends. It slips through vegetation with ease and grabs the attention of bass. The Gika Rig offers a different presentation than most other anglers’ baits, and it may be the edge you need to put more fish in the boat especially in lakes with extra angling pressure.
NEW - GAMAKATSU 2020 GIKA RIG
NEW – GAMAKATSU 2020 GIKA RIG

Key Changes Push Walters Into Lead At Bassmaster Eastern Open On Hartwell

[print_link]

ANDERSON, S.C. — Knowing which changes to make and when moved Patrick Walters into the Day 2 lead of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open on Lake Hartwell with a two-day total of 30 pounds, 10 ounces.

Turning in one of the most consistent performances so far, the Bassmaster Elite Series pro from Summerville, S.C., added 15-11 Thursday to his Day 1 catch of 14-15. Doing so required several key decisions.

“I had to change it up a good bit today; I had to change the bait, the presentation and color,” Walters said. “My technique was a lot different today.”

Walters lamented a similar frustration echoed by several of his fellow competitors — bass that would rarely commit to a bait. On blueback herring lakes like Hartwell, bass tend to prefer sunnier conditions that allow them to better spot the baitfish silhouettes.

Thursday saw even more clouds than Day 1. Also, the lack of significant wind typically makes bass more skittish, so today’s cloudy, mostly calm conditions presented a tough bite. The upside is that the process of elimination helped Walters dial in an effective program.

“If I would have caught what I saw today, I think I could have caught 20 pounds,” Walters said. “I had the bites, they were just nipping at it. They were being weird today, but I have a good idea about tomorrow.

“I could honestly tell by the way the fish were reacting that they weren’t feeding well. I could call them, but they wouldn’t eat the normal presentations, so I changed it until they started eating it. I was fishing behind people and when they’d leave, I could pull in there and catch a couple. I was that confident in my bait selection.”

Walters withheld specific details but said he caught all of his bass Thursday on topwater lures. Targeting a mix of cane piles and other structure in 10 to 20 feet of water, Walters said he made his final upgrades late in the day.

“I ran down to Lightwood Log Creek, went almost to the dam, fished my way up, went to Sadlers Creek and came all the way back to Green Pond,” he said. “At 2 o’clock around here at Green Pond, I said, ‘I’m going all the way back down to the dam,’ and ran down there and culled up two more times.”

Walters said burning the time to return to the dam was a matter of necessity and confidence.

“The fish weren’t biting, so I had to make a change,” he said. “They’re always biting somewhere, you just have to go find them. It was just instinct; just going with your gut.”

Andy Wicker of Pomaria, S.C., is in second with 29-8. After placing fourth on Day 1 with 15-11, he added 13-13 Thursday. His success depended on being in the right place at the right time.

“It was the same program as yesterday, there’s still a lot of boats fishing for those schooling fish and it’s just a timing deal,” Wicker said. “There were bite windows, but overall the afternoon was better.

“There was a period when I caught two or three pretty quick this morning, but I sat on those fish until probably 1 o’clock until I caught any more. The wind picked up the last couple of hours, and I think that probably helped things.”

Wicker caught his fish on a rotation of a Berkley Cane Walker topwater bait, a weightless Zoom Fluke and a 3.8 Keitech swimbait on a 1/4-ounce jighead.

John Maner of Falkville, Ala., is in third with 28-14. Moving up from 14th place, he added 15-2 to the 13-12 he weighed on Day 1.

“I did not have but three fish at 12:45,” Maner said. “I was throwing topwater, and I had a lot of fish come up and just roll on the bait. I thought if I just keep putting myself in those areas, sooner or later I’ll (fill my limit).

“With about 30 minutes to go, we came back upriver and I caught my fourth and fifth fish. That was cutting it to the wire.”

Maner caught most of his bass on a big topwater lure, but his biggest fish — a 4-15 largemouth — ate a 3/4-ounce football jig with a Strike King Rage Craw trailer in 40 feet of water.

Day 1 leader, Cody Hahner of Wausau, Wis., is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with the 6-3 he caught Wednesday.

Cody Wilson of Ladson, S.C., leads the co-angler division with 13-6. Wilson tied for ninth on Day 1 with 6-3 and caught a better bag that went 7-3 Thursday.

J.W. Smith of Goose Creek, S.C., holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with a 6-0 largemouth.

The Top 12 remaining anglers in each division will take off Friday at 7 a.m. ET from Green Pond Landing and Event Center. The weigh-in will be held at Green Pond at 3 p.m.

September 24, 2020 Anglers Might Find Fish In Transition During Bassmaster Elite Series Event At Guntersville SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — Veteran Alabama pro Matt Herren has heard the question a lot lately, “What’s a Bassmaster Elite Series tournament going to be like on Lake Guntersville in the fall?” Herren isn’t exactly sure how to answer. “If we were going to Guntersville about two weeks later, I think it would be a true fall tournament and the weights could be a lot heavier,” he said. “But right now, we’re gonna hit it right in the middle of the change. We’re headed toward fall, but we’re not quite there yet. “We could be looking at a different set of circumstances every day of the tournament.” The NOCO Bassmaster Elite at Lake Guntersville will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 3, with takeoffs each day at 6:30 a.m. CT from Goose Pond Colony Resort Marina and weigh-ins back at that facility each day at 2:30 p.m. The 85-angler field will earn valuable points in a Bassmaster Angler of the Year race that is entering its stretch run, and the overall tournament winner will walk away with $100,000. Fall has begun taking hold, with shorter days and cooler nighttime temperatures slowly lowering the water temperatures on lakes all over the Southeastern United States. But Herren said it is unlikely conditions will have changed enough by tournament time to congregate bass in any one distinct area. That means multiple patterns will likely be in play, and anglers may have to figure out several — even after the tournament begins — to stay in contention. “Guntersville is a grass lake,” Herren said. “It’s full of hydrilla, full of eelgrass. It has a little bit of milfoil and a little bit of lily pads. Somebody’s going to have a really good tournament fishing that kind of stuff. Then, there will be guys who have successful tournaments fishing typical Tennessee River stuff like ledges and drops. “My guess is it’s gonna take a little bit of all of it to win.” Herren said, considering the conditions are likely to be changing constantly, he wouldn’t be surprised if 17 to 18 pounds a day put an angler in a good position to win. Reigning Bassmaster Angler of the Year Scott Canterbury, another veteran Alabama pro with plenty of experience on Guntersville, said the lake could be even stingier than that. “I really think it could be won with 16 pounds a day,” Canterbury said. “I’ve been watching the results of the tournaments up there, and that’s about what it has been taking.” Canterbury said Guntersville’s reputation as a “big bass factory” will likely shine through sporadically, with a few big bass and an occasional big limit being brought to the scales. But he doesn’t expect the consistency the lake is known for during the spring when bass movements are easier to predict. “It’s Guntersville, so you’re always going to see some big ones,” he said. “The guy who separates himself from the pack will be the one who manages to get several of those big bites. “When I say I think it’ll take a 16-pound average to win, that could mean somebody catches 21 pounds the first day and then only brings in 11 the next day. One really good day could mean a lot.” Typical grass tactics like flipping and frogging are likely to play, Canterbury said. But the trick will be finding new places to employ those tactics for each round of the four-day event. “We’re not in a situation right now where those places are gonna replenish,” he said. “If you go into a place and really burn them on a frog, it’ll be done. There just aren’t going to be enough fish committed to one area right now to just keep going back to a spot over and over again.” During a normal year, the Elite Series schedule would be about done. But since the COVID-19 pandemic forced B.A.S.S. to pause the schedule for three months, many events that would have been held in the spring or summer have been pushed to the fall. Though it won’t be a typical Guntersville slugfest, Canterbury and Herren said they are looking forward to spending time on a familiar lake during an unfamiliar spot on the calendar. “I’ll be starting fresh, and I’ll really have to spend some time figuring things out in practice,” Canterbury said. “But that’s OK. I really like tournaments like this where you kind of have to piece things together — and to have one on a lake I know really well will be a lot of fun.” Herren agreed. “Obviously, I haven’t spent a lot of time up there this time of year the past few seasons,” he said. “But I’m ready to go. With all we’ve been through this year, we all just want to be able to finish this season. “We’re doing that. So, Hallelujah!”

Anglers Might Find Fish In Transition During Bassmaster Elite Series Event At Guntersville

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — Veteran Alabama pro Matt Herren has heard the question a lot lately, “What’s a Bassmaster Elite Series tournament going to be like on Lake Guntersville in the fall?”

La Crosse Selected to Host 2021 Tackle Warehouse TITLE Championship

Pro Circuit Championship to Showcase 50 Pros Competing on Mississippi River for $235,000 Top Prize

LA CROSSE, Wis. (Sept. 24, 2020) – FLW and Explore La Crosse announced Thursday that the 2021 Tackle Warehouse TITLE, the Pro Circuit Championship, will be held Aug. 17-22, 2021, on the Mississippi River in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Although FLW’s top championship has been held on the Mississippi River once before – in Moline, Illinois in 1998 – this event marks the first time that FLW has hosted its premier event in La Crosse.

“We are elated to host the TITLE Pro Circuit Championship and showcase the incredible bass fishing that the Upper Mississippi River offers,” said A.J. Frels, Executive Director of Explore La Crosse. “The scenic La Crosse region presents a picturesque backdrop of bluffs that overlooks one of the best bass fisheries in the country. The catch-weigh-release format fits the Mississippi River perfectly as massive quantities of quality largemouth and smallmouth inhabit these bountiful waters, providing nonstop action and exciting competition for the live webcast and television broadcasts.”

La Crosse and the Mississippi River has played host to dozens of FLW tournaments over the years, including four High School Fishing events, three Abu Garcia College Fishing events, 43 Phoenix Bass Fishing League tournaments, five Toyota Series tournaments and two Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit events. The 2021 Tackle Warehouse TITLE will mark the 26th anniversary of FLW’s top-tier championship. The tournament will launch from Veterans Freedom Park in La Crosse.

“We couldn’t be more excited to take the Tackle Warehouse TITLE to La Crosse and the Mississippi River,” said Kathy Fennel, FLW Executive Vice President and General Manager. “We’ve had tremendous success hosting tournaments in La Crosse in the past, so it made bringing our championship an obvious choice. The bass fishing fans in Wisconsin have always been extremely passionate and enthusiastic, and we’re proud to be showcasing our most prestigious championship to them.”

In 2021, the 26th season of the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit will feature six regular-season tournaments showcasing the best 150 anglers in the world competing for as much as $135,000, including a $35,000 FLW PHOENIX Bonus, in a five-biggest-fish format on top bass fisheries at peak times. The 2021 season culminates with the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit TITLE in La Crosse, where the top 50 pros will compete for as much as $235,000, including a $35,000 FLW PHOENIX Bonus, in a catch, weigh, immediate-release format.

Each Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit tournament features live on-the-water coverage plus television coverage on the Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel.
