The Rejuvenation Of Legendary Angler Clark Wendlandt

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Clark Wendlandt, of Leander, Texas, has fished professionally since 1992, winning championships and even gracing the cover of a cereal box. Fast forward two decades and Wendlandt is 54 years old and out-fishing guys 20 years younger than him.

That is particularly impressive given the physical rigors of a four-day Bassmaster Elite Series tournament, which also includes three days of practice and lots of travel.

Wendlandt is leading the Bassmaster Angler of the Year (AOY) points race midway through the season and finished fourth in the YETI Bassmaster Elite at Lake St. Clair. Wendlandt is also becoming a regular on Bassmaster LIVE coverage and ESPN2, where an audience of more than 13.2 million sports enthusiasts have watched live coverage of the four most recent tournaments — some discovering sportfishing for the first time.

“You’ve got to have staying power,” said Wendlandt. “You have to have the drive to want to do well all the time.

“What I love about this sport is there’s no resting on your laurels. If you have a bad tournament everyone forgets about you. To have a chance at AOY you have to fish every tournament well.”

After finishing 44th in the 2019 AOY race, his first Elite campaign, Wendlandt is on fire in 2020. He has three Top 10 finishes, a 16th and a 46th. That is after three Angler of the Year titles at FLW, four FLW tour wins and qualifying 18 times for the Forrest Wood Cup. Wendlandt has also fished four Bassmaster Classics and has earned more than $2.5 million on the two tours.

In 2020, with a global pandemic and recession making life difficult for most of us, Wendlandt appears to have a new lease on life.

“I want a blue trophy,” he said. “That has rejuvenated me.”

Wendlandt has also reached the stage of life where he has less family responsibilities, and that may have freed him up a bit.

“When our kids were young and playing sports, I didn’t want to leave home and head up north to fish tournaments,” said Wendlandt. “But they’re married now, and I just think about catching the next bass.”

Is Wendlandt beginning to think about an Elite Angler of the Year title?

“No, not at all,” he said. “We won’t think about that until the last tournament or two of the year.”

Potomac River Readies for Toyota Series Event

Potomac River Readies for Toyota Series Event

MARBURY, Md. (Sept. 2, 2020) – Marbury, Maryland is set to host an FLW bass-fishing tournament next week, Sept. 10-12, with the Toyota Series at the Potomac River event. Hosted by the Charles County Board of Commissioners, the three-day tournament will feature the region’s best bass-fishing pros and co-anglers casting for a top prize of up to $65,000, plus a $35,000 bonus if the winner is a qualified Phoenix Boat owner.

“The river has been fishing pretty tough lately, but I think that by the time this tournament rolls around it will get much better,” said local boater Joseph Thompson of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, who has eight career top-10 finishes on the Potomac River in FLW competition. “The weather is stabilizing. We’ve had a lot of rain – the river is stained – and some stretches are muddier than others. However, it’s supposed to clear up in the coming days and with water temperatures dropping, I think all of that should really help the fishing.

“With the water getting cooler and cleaning up, I truly think we’re going to catch fish on a ton of different techniques,” Thompson continued. “We’ll catch fish in the grass. We’ll catch fish in the pads. On hard cover. If you go up north, you’ll catch both tides. It’s going to be wide open. So, the guy that goes out and fishes his strengths and doesn’t follow what the crowd is doing is going to be the guy that wins.”

Thompson said that he expects a lot of fish to be caught on various topwater baits like buzzbaits, frogs, and Pop-Rs, and moving baits like a swim jig or a ChatterBait.

“We’re going to really open up the arsenal and catch fish on a lot of different baits,” Thompson said. “Someone will get on them for three days. I think to make the top-10 cut to fish the final day, a guy will need a two-day total around 25 pounds. I predict the three-day overall winner will likely have 42 to 43 pounds.”

Anglers will take off daily at 7 a.m. EDT from Smallwood State Park at 2750 Sweden Point Road in Marbury. Weigh-ins will also be held at the State Park and will begin at 3 p.m. Attendance is limited to competing anglers and essential staff only. Fans are encouraged to follow the event online through the “FLW Live” weigh-in broadcasts and daily coverage at FLWFishing.com.

In Toyota Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event, scaling up for every 20 boats over 160 and scaling down for every boat below 160. With a 160-boat field, pros fish for a top prize of $40,000, plus an extra $35,000 if FLW PHOENIX BONUS qualified. Co-anglers cast for the top prize of a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard (valued at $33,500). With a 260-boat field, pros fish for a top award of $65,000, plus an extra $35,000 if FLW PHOENIX BONUS qualified. Co-anglers cast for the top prize of a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard (valued at $33,500) plus $5,000 cash.

The 2020 Toyota Series consists of eight divisions – Central, Eastern, Northern, Plains, Southeastern, Southern, Southwestern and Western – each holding three regular-season events, along with the International division. Anglers who fish all three qualifiers in any of the eight divisions and finish in the top 25 will qualify for the no-entry-fee Toyota Series Championship for a shot at winning $235,000 cash, including a $35,000 FLW PHOENIX Bonus for qualified anglers. The winning co-angler at the championship earns a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard. The 2020 Toyota Series Championship will be held Dec. 3-5 on Lake Cumberland in Burnside, Kentucky, and is hosted by the Somerset Tourist & Convention Commission and the Burnside Tourism Commission.

Charles Burkes holds two stripers he caught recently while fishing with Capt. Dale Wilson.

Fishing has been fair. Water temperature is still in the mid- to upper 80s. Early morning and night fishing are the best times to try your luck. Boat traffic and warm water temperatures has caused the fishing to be slow.

Largemouth bass
Fishing will be fair this month. Best lures will be drop shots, Ned rigs, senkoes, plastic worms, Carolina rigs and top water. Most largemouth bass will be be caught on points and medium to deep structures. Bass will move to shallow water as the baitfish make a move into the creeks and coves later this month. Good areas to try will be docks, secondary points, rocks, brush piles and fallen trees. Anglers should practice catch and release this month.

Smallmouth bass
Fishing will be fair this month. Best areas will be main and secondary points, deep rock, deep docks and ledges. Best lures will be top water, small crankbaits, drop shot rigs, spy bait, Ned rigs and shaky heads. Best depth will be from the surface to 30 feet. The best times will be cloudy days and at night.

Striped bass
Fishing will improve this month. Best areas will be from the mid-sections of both rivers to the dam. Best lures will be Zoom flukes fished on ½- to ¾-ounce leadheads, swimbaits, top water and live bait on down lines and planer boards. Casting and vertical jigging will work best. Some fish may surface this month. Night fishing will continue to be poor.

Crappie
Fishing for crappie will be fair this month. Best depths will be 10 to 20 feet. Best areas will be in the upper section of both rivers and the main creeks around docks, fallen trees and brush piles. Best lures will be small minnows and 1½- to 2-inch shad-shaped plastic tubes fished on 1/32- to 1/16-ounce lead heads.

Tips of the month
Cooler nights and shorter days will make for better fishing later this month. Wear a life jacket and never fish alone at night. Make sure running lights are on after dark. Remember to practice catch and release, and take a kid fishing.

Major League Fishing, FLW Announce 2021 Toyota Series Schedule

Major League Fishing, FLW Announce 2021 Toyota Series Schedule

[print_link]

BENTON, Ky. (Sept. 1, 2020) – Major League Fishing (MLF) and FLW announced today the 2021 Toyota Series schedule, highlighted by a smaller Championship field while continuing to offer a $200,000 first-place payout and $10,000 bonuses to the highest-finishing pro from each division.

Anglers who finish in the top 25 in each division’s Angler of the Year (AOY) standings will qualify for the no-entry-fee Toyota Series Championship for a shot at winning $200,000 cash, plus lucrative contingency bonuses like the $35,000 FLW Phoenix bonus offered this season. The winning co-angler at the championship earns a $33,500 Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat (or comparable model) with a 115-horsepower Mercury outboard. The win-and-you’re-in format guarantees that anglers are never out of contention to qualify for the Championship – if they win a Toyota Series tournament, they will be on their way to the Championship along with the top 25 pros and co-anglers from each division.

“We’re really excited about the schedule for our Toyota Series anglers. We truly feel we’ve offered an exceptional lineup of fisheries at optimal times for competitive events with big fish,” said Kathy Fennel, FLW Executive Vice President and General Manager.

The 2021 Toyota Series will feature six divisions, which is down from eight in 2020 but up from five in 2019.

“Last year we aggressively expanded the Toyota Series from five divisions to eight based on demand from anglers and sponsors,” Fennel commented. “Coming off a difficult 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will run six divisions in 2021 to ensure substantial and sustainable opportunities for anglers nationwide.”

The 2021 Toyota Series Championship field will be smaller due to the reduction in divisions, but the event will still feature $10,000 bonuses for the highest-finishing pro from each of the six U.S. Toyota Series divisions and the International division.

Toyota Series entry fees will remain the same at $1,700 pro and $550 co-angler per tournament and top payouts in each event remain $75,000 for pros, including a $35,000 FLW Phoenix Bonus, and a $33,500 Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat (or comparable model) with a 115-horsepower Mercury outboard for co-anglers. As field sizes increase, so do payouts, with top awards reaching $100,000, including a $35,000 FLW Phoenix Bonus, for pros and $33,500 Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat (or comparable model) with a 115-horsepower Mercury outboard plus $5,000 for co-anglers at 260 boats, with awards extending through 65th place. The Strike King Angler of the Year in each division receives $5,000 and the Co-angler of the Year in each division earns $2,000. Complete payout details are listed below.

Registration for the 2021 Toyota Series will open in early November. Rules and registration dates will be announced soon.

Hayden’s Butler Wins Two-Day Phoenix Bass Fishing League Event presented by Fish-Intel on Lake Guntersville

Kentucky’s Fouts Wins Co-angler Division

[print_link]

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (Aug. 31, 2020) – Boater Josh Butler of Hayden, Alabama, brought a two-day total of 10 bass to the scale this weekend weighing 32 pounds, 3 ounces to win the Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine Choo Choo Division Super-Tournament at Lake Guntersville presented by Fish-Intel. Butler earned a total of $15,533 for his victory, including the lucrative $7,000 FLW PHOENIX BONUS contingency award.

“Of the 10 fish that I weighed in, I caught them on probably six different baits,” said Butler, who earned his first career victory in FLW competition. “I had a smorgasbord. I caught them on a crankbait, a spoon, a drop-shot rig, a shaky-head rig and a swimbait. Total junk fishing.”

Butler said that he fished down-lake, covering 8 to 10 different spots from the State Park down to the dam.

“I caught them all out deep, 18 to 25 foot,” Butler said. “That’s how I love to fish – I live and die out deep.  I’ve been so close in the past – a couple of top-3 finishes, a bunch of top-5s, so I’m so glad to finally get the monkey off my back and earn a win.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament as follows:

1st:       Josh Butler of Hayden, Ala., 10 bass, 32-3, $15,533

2nd:      Rusty Cooper of Gurley, Ala., 10 bass, 31-13, $3,766

3rd:       Jay Fagan of Lebanon, Tenn., 10 bass, 30-14, $2,510

The 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine Super-Tournament on Lake Guntersville presented by Fish-Intel was hosted by the Marshall County Convention & Visitors Bureau. It was the fifth and final qualifying event in the 2020 Choo Choo Division.

Now the top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the Choo Choo Division based on point standings, along with the five winners of each qualifying event, will advance to the Oct. 16-18 Bass Fishing League Regional Championship on Lake Cherokee in Jefferson City, Tennessee, hosted by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. Boaters will compete for a $60,000 prize package, including a new Phoenix 819 Pro bass boat with a 200-horsepower Mercury outboard and $10,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new 18-foot Phoenix bass boat with a 200-horsepower outboard.

The 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Phoenix Bass Fishing League All-American.

The 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League All-American will be held April 30 through May 2 at Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina and is hosted by Visit Anderson. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers plus tournament winners from each Phoenix Bass Fishing League division earn priority entry into the FLW Series, the pathway to the FLW Pro Circuit and ultimately the MLF Bass Pro Tour, where top pros compete with no entry fees.

NORTH EAST, Md. (Aug. 31, 2020) Boater Richard Leadbeater of Haddon Heights, New York, brought a two-day total of 10 bass to the scale weighing 32 pounds, 10 ounces to win the Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine Northeast Division Super-Tournament at the Chesapeake Bay. Leadbetter said that he caught his fish on a Z-Man Evergreen ChatterBait Jack Hammer and a War Eagle spinnerbait.
