Here’s your chance to win the incredible new St. Croix rod everyone’s talking about

Park Falls, WI (March 13, 2020) – You’ve heard about it. You’ve read about it. Now, here’s your chance to own and fish St. Croix’s most sensitive rod ever… the all-new Legend® Xtreme.

Sensitivity Redefined

Unveiled to the public at the Bassmaster Classic earlier this month, the new Legend Xtreme blends St. Croix’s reengineered SCV carbon blanks and top proprietary technologies with Daiwa AGSTM carbon fiber guide frames with SiC rings and an all-new Gen2 Xtreme-Skin handle.

The reengineered SCV carbon found in the new Legend Xtreme is an example of St. Croix’s constant drive to obtain the unimaginable – proven Xtreme durability with proven, unprecedented sensitivity – so anglers can fish without compromise. Engineered as a result of new, proprietary manufacturing processes, the new Legend Xtreme employs a resin that significantly increases strength in compression during the hookset, as well as flexural strength when the rod is under load. The new SCV carbon construction also incorporates an improved, overlaid ART (Advanced Reinforcing Technology) to yield the highest levels of carbon fiber density found on any fishing rod on earth. Simply put, the new Legend Xtreme offers an unquestionably pure and dense carbon, to transmit the slightest vibration through a carbon fiber guide train and proprietary handle, all while achieving a tensile strength never attained in any previous St. Croix fishing rod.

The new Legend Xtreme Series includes four casting models and three new spinning models to cover multiple freshwater presentations and techniques. To celebrate the launch, St. Croix is giving away one of each new Legend Xtreme model as a part of our Experience the Xtreme Giveaway.

5 Early Spring Bass Baits That NEVER Let Me Down – MTB

5 Early Spring Bass Baits That NEVER Let Me Down

[print_link]

Spring is just around the corner, and to me, that means one thing: BIG. FAT. BASS. After a long winter, I’m jacked up to start slinging baits and ripping lips.

I’ve spent hours in the garage this winter stocking, organizing, and tweaking my fishing tackle for the upcoming season. With hundreds of baits to choose from, deciding what to tie on first isn’t always easy. To help out, here is a quick list of my 5 favorite early Spring baits.

Lipless Crankbaits

Lipless crankbaits have tight wobbling action, which helps trigger strikes from fish less willing to chase erratic baits. Lipless crankbaits also sink, which help me fish them at different depths effectively.

Silent But Deadly

In clear water, I use the quieter, more subtle silent lipless crankbait. Silent baits spook less fish and can trigger bites when fishing in a crowd. If everyone else is throwing loud rattling baits, try using a silent version.

Loud Rattles

The loud rattles from a lipless crankbait help call in fish from far away. Fishing in stained water or windy conditions are times when I pick up a bait with loud rattles.

A slow and steady retrieve is my favorite technique during this time. Covering water and keeping a slow and steady retrieval speed has helped me to stick the most fish. When your lure gets hung in the grass, use a light sweep to free it opposed to an overpowering snap. Toning down my lure movements during the early spring results in more fish.

Use crawfish colored lipless crankbaits and target river channels, secondary points, and sunny banks in the early spring.

Suspending Jerkbaits

A suspending jerkbait holds all of the characteristics I look for in an early spring bait, and they’re a blast to fish.

With a simple twitch of the rod, anglers can’t mimic the action of a wounded or fleeing shad with the trusty old jerkbait. Traditionally, I’ve fished suspending jerkbaits from brands like the Rapala or Lucky Craft. While I still love both of their jerkbaits, I’ve had the most success recently fishing with the new Googan Squad Scout jerkbait.

I use a twitch, twitch pause retrieve with my jerkbaits in the spring, typically letting my bait rest for at least 2 seconds after the second twitch. In cooler water, I add an even longer pause. Most of my jerkbait bites come during the pause.

Arguably the best jerkbait angler of all time, Kevin Van Dam, once said that you should never use your reel to bring in a jerkbait but instead use the rod. The reel is just there to pick up the line as your rod brings in the jerkbait. I always try to remember that when I fish jerkbaits.

Finesse Jigs

When bass aren’t chasing my moving baits, one of the first things I switch to is a finesse jig.

A finesse jig gives me exactly what I need from a jig but in a downsized profile. Fish can be finicky this time of year and I feel like a finesse jig provides me with a few extra bites when compared to jigs with larger profiles.

Rocks, docks, metal, and other hardcover warm up quickly when the sun rays beat down on them. Bass gravitate to these areas to warm up during the early parts of the year.

Chatterbaits/Spinnerbaits

The chatterbait is a tight wobbling bait that set-ups perfectly for springtime fishing. Covering water is key, and there are few baits better for that then the chatterbait.

While chatterbaits put off an insane amount of THUMP, they do it while maintaining a streamline swimming profile. To me, this is the perfect combination for early spring fishing. The chatterbait’s blade calls fish in, and the streamline swimming action convinces them into taking a swipe.

When it comes to chatterbait trailers, it’s all about the Yamamoto Zako. The Zako puts off an inviting swimming action without taking away the intended action from the chatterbait.

Soft Plastic Craws

In clear water, there are few better baits than a soft plastic craw. Clearwater fish rely heavily on sight, so having a bait that looks similar to what fish are eating will result in more bites. With so many rigging options available, a soft plastic craw is an easy lure choice for this time of year. Texas rigs, shakey heads, and Carolina rigs are three of my favorite ways to fish a soft plastic craw in the early Spring.

Pro Tip: Fish The Northside

The northside (south-facing) part of lakes and ponds receive the most sunlight and therefore warm up the fastest in the spring. Target these areas with the baits we’ve covered and your season should be off to a hot start.

Also, stained water warms up faster than clear water. Fish stained water lakes early in the year and switch to the clear lakes after that. This way you can target the most active fish.

2020 Bassmaster Classic Draws Biggest Crowd In Alabama History

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The 2020 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk marked the 13th time the iconic event has been held in Alabama and shattered previous attendance records, B.A.S.S. officials announced today.

The total Classic Week attendance of 122,814 was recorded at a variety of activities across Alabama, including the Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo in Birmingham, daily takeoffs on Lake Guntersville and the inaugural Huk Bassmaster B.A.S.S. Nation Kayak Series powered by TourneyX presented by Abu Garcia on Logan Martin Lake in Pell City.

This attendance number is 35% higher than the previous state record set in 2014, and the fourth-highest attended Bassmaster Classic in the event’s 50-year history.

“This record-breaking attendance would not have been possible without the loyalty of our incredible Bassmaster fans and the partnerships between B.A.S.S. and our sponsors, exhibitors, the media and our host communities in Birmingham and Marshall County,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “We’re thankful for the hard work of the entire B.A.S.S. family and our great volunteers who made this Classic such a success.”

In addition to the daily weigh-ins, the hands-on Bass Pro Shops Get Hooked On Fishing children’s area and Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo held at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex, large crowds attended the takeoffs each morning at Civitan Park on the shores of Lake Guntersville.

“We were thrilled with the support and crowd that turned out each morning at Civitan Park,” said Katy Norton, President of the Marshall County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We want to thank our out-of-town guests and invite them back to Lake Guntersville to fish and enjoy one of Alabama’s great natural attractions.”

A new event this year, the Bassmaster Classic Kickoff Party benefiting Children’s of Alabama, featured live music and fireworks and enabled fans to mingle with anglers on Thursday evening.

Fans also tuned in from afar to watch the action on Bassmaster LIVE — which established new records with a 23% increase in minutes watched — and follow the event on Bassmaster.com. The website was visited more than 1.8 million times by fans from 168 countries, including Brazil, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Africa, Switzerland and Zimbabwe, while social media engagement was up 253% over the 2019 Classic.

Classic Week culminated in crowning a new world champion of bass fishing as Hank Cherry, of Lincolnton, N.C., won the three-day tournament with a total of 65 pounds, 5 ounces and put the exclamation point on a dominant wire-to-wire victory.

Economic impact for the week is expected to top $25 million and will be announced once the calculations are completed by the local hosts.

Premier marine apparel company talks about managing matters in an ever-changing global environment

Gill Has a Good Grip

Premier marine apparel company talks about managing matters in an ever-changing global environment

Buford, GA (March 12, 2020) – There’s no ducking it. The coronavirus, whether you believe the world is overreacting or not, is dramatically altering the global economy. International stock markets are yo-yoing, the ups not balancing the downs. Shelves are getting wiped clean of, well, everything from disinfectant wipes to bottled water. And our very own fishing and marine industries are feeling the effects of global breaches in the supply chain.

Not that any manufacturer endemic to outdoor recreation had a prepper-plan for the potential of an international pandemic, but Gill’s intelligent design, manufacturing, distribution and sales processes put the U.K.-based company in the best position possible.

Matt Clark, Gill’s long-tenured Product Development Director, knows the chief concern among dealers is the ability to deliver products from overseas manufacturing facilities. Clark has an answer. “Managing the production and supply of goods for a global audience has always been a complex issue, and we constantly review our supply base to ensure that Gill is not overly reliant upon one single country of origin. Consideration is given to those countries with preferential trading relationships with our key export territories, but more recently reducing production in those countries facing punitive tariffs.”

Clark continues, “The latest challenge faced by all brands currently manufacturing in Asia is the effect of COVID-19, more commonly known as coronavirus. Production schedules have been impacted by the late opening of production facilities in China, as well as disruption to the wider supply chain across Asia as components and fabrics are delayed.”

As the result of solid strategy, Gill’s assortment of Foul Weather Gear is in-stock and shipping.

Fortunately, Gill has been casting a wider net. “The positive news for our brand is that we have been expanding our supplier base over the past few years, reducing our dependency on China and spreading production across a wider geographic region,” said Clark. “Our priority has always been to work with specialist suppliers with key skill sets and an ability to meet our strict quality, ethical and environmental requirements, so this has been a long-term strategic decision of the business.”

“Secondly, we’ve insulated ourselves from the worst effects of tariffs and delays due to coronavirus by accelerating our production schedule. A year ago, we began to take delivery of key lines a full four months ahead of previous seasons, meaning that retailers could take advantage of early deliveries ahead of the Holiday Season, leaving us in a positive stock position as the season started.”

Being in front of the eight-ball positions Gill ideally for introducing new products. “These earlier deliveries mean that we’re presenting new collections at an earlier stage, so that key retailers can start planning their forward order commitments,” said Clark. “We’re prioritizing stock allocation to those customers who placed early orders, so even in the face of supply difficulties, we’re supporting those retailers who bought into the program.”

Gill’s collection of innovative UV Tec styles, both men’s and women’s, have gained significant popularity among anglers.

Enter the element of trust. In this environment, dealers are more apt to stock proven, legacy brands like Gill, than relying on startups and smaller players to deliver as promised. “In an uncertain and challenging retail environment, we’re certainly seeing retailers taking a cautious approach, backing trusted brands with a commercial product offer and an ability to resupply when needed,” said Clark. “However, there is also an interest in innovation and newness with retailers taking a tough line on established brands that simply aren’t delivering in terms of product offer or service. There are opportunities for brands such as Gill that have a compelling product offer and are investing in marketing and in-store support.”

The issue of climate change is temporarily taking second chair to the coronavirus, but Gill knows that shifting weather patterns also require progressive planning. “There’s no doubt that weather patterns can directly influence our sales, both negatively and positively,” said Clark. “The positive for Gill is that over the past 18 months we’ve seen a significant increase in sales of our sun-protective UV Tec styles, as many territories have experienced longer and hotter summers. If we were overly dependent upon waterproof styles, then I’d be concerned. Changing weather patterns only emphasize the importance of having a broad product portfolio with something for everyone, regardless of climate.”

To that, whether it’s climate change or simply unseasonable and unpredictable weather, Gill continuously looks out in the headlights. “As well as fine-tuning our delivery dates, we’ve also worked hard on reducing manufacturing lead-times so that we can react to opportunities presented by changeable weather,” said Clark. “We work in partnership with our suppliers, keeping them regularly updated with sales data versus our forecast so that we can replenish stock at short notice when we see an uplift. To allow us to track sales patterns and respond accordingly, we’ve invested and doubled the size of our merchandising team over the past six months.”

Manufacturing and global distribution is certainly under duress, and the marine apparel category was already highly competitive. Yet still, Gill remains optimistic about its leadership position and strength of brand. Let’s just say the company won’t be caught flat-footed.

Further diversifying Gill’s product assortment are 19 different styles and sizes of marine bags and packs.

Lake Martin Readies for Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit

Pro Bass Fishing’s Premier Five-Fish Limit Tournament Series to Visit Alexander City for Third Event of Season

[print_link]

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. (March 11, 2020) – The third event of the 2020 season for the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit, professional bass fishing’s premier five-fish limit tournament series, kicks off next week, March 19-22 with the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit at Lake Martin. Hosted by the Alexander City Chamber, the tournament will feature 154 bass-fishing professionals from around the world competing for a top award of up to $135,000 and valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2020 FLW TITLE, the Pro Circuit Championship.

“Lake Martin is a really good place to fish, and it really allows guys to fish to their strengths,” said Pro Circuit angler Jamie Horton of Centerville, Alabama, who has 21 career top-10 finishes in FLW competition. “The fishing has been good and with the way the weather is setting up the lake should be on fire. I think we’re fixing to see a really, really good tournament.

“Spotted bass will be a very big factor,” Horton continued. “The spots have gotten so much bigger because of the herring and there are just so many more of them now. That being said, I think it’ll take a mixed bag of spotted bass and largemouth bass to win the tournament. I don’t think we’ll see too many limits of just largemouth. The key to doing well will be guys that figure out how to catch them both.”

Horton said that the bass are still in their prespawn phase, and he expects Carolina rigs and crankbaits to be strong options for competitors.

“The fish are heavy and the lake is prime – I definitely think we’ll see a 20-pound stringer or two,” Horton went on to say. “I think it’ll take a two-day total around 24½ pounds to cash a check, and I think the winner will have right around 16 pounds a day – 64 pounds over four days. Those weights are a little higher than normal, but the weather has been stable and the lake is full. It’s going to be a fun tournament.”

Anglers will take off at 7 a.m. CST each day from Wind Creek State Park, located at 4325 Alabama Highway 128, in Alexander City. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins, March 19-20, will be held at the State Park beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s weigh-ins, March 21-22, will also be held at the State Park, but will begin at 4 p.m.

“Lake Martin and Alexander City are ecstatic about hosting FLW in mid-March,” said Ed Collari, President & CEO of the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce. “With over 45,000 acres and 800 miles of shorelines, we are honored to be sharing our treasured lake and vibrant community with many of the best anglers in the world, as well with their families and fans.”

For youth, the FLW Foundation’s Youth Fishing Derby will be held at Wind Creek State Park on Saturday, March 21 from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. The event is hosted by Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit anglers and is free and open to any youth 14 and under. Rods and reels are available for use, but youth are encouraged to bring their own if they own one. The 1st and 2nd place anglers that catch the biggest fish will be recognized Saturday on the FLW Pro Circuit stage, just prior to the pros weighing in. The first 50 youth registered will receive a free goodie bag. Youth can register on-site or pre-register by emailing [email protected].

As part of the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit’s community outreach initiative, pro anglers including Aaron Britt, Chris Neau and Jeff Dobson will volunteer their time at the Lake Martin Animal Shelter, located at 2502 Sugar Creek Road in Alexander City. Anglers will help with animal cleanup and visit with visitors and staff to give tips and tactics for local fisheries, snap photos, sign autographs and share fishing stories.

Television coverage of the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit at Lake Martin will premiere in 2020. The 2020 Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit will have 156 two-hour airings on network television, including 26 consecutive weeks of Friday night primetime airing on Outdoor Channel and 130 airings on Sportsman Channel for a total of 312 hours of Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit programming.

The popular FLW Live on-the-water broadcast will air on Days Three and Four of the event, featuring live action from the boats of the tournament’s top pros each day. Host Travis Moran is joined by Toyota Series pro Todd Hollowell to break down the extended action each day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. On-the-water broadcasts will be live streamed on FLWFishing.com, the FLW YouTube channel and the FLW Facebook page.

In Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit competition, the full field of 154 pro anglers compete in the two-day opening round on Thursday and Friday. The top 30 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advance to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continue competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.

Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2020 FLW TITLE, the Pro Circuit Championship. The 2020 FLW TITLE will be on the St. Lawrence River in Massena, New York, Aug. 8-13 and is hosted by the Town of Massena.

Ridgeville’s Austin Wins Phoenix Bass Fishing League Event on Clarks Hill Lake

Hollywood’s Hoy Wins Co-angler Division

[print_link]

MCCORMICK, S.C. (March 10, 2020) – Boater Kyle Austin of Ridgeville, South Carolina, brought five bass to the scale totaling 13 pounds, 15 ounces to win the 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine event at Clarks Hill Lake Saturday in McCormick, South Carolina. For his victory, Austin earned $3,426.

“I was fishing mainly on the bottom end of the lake, fishing a mixture of muddy and clean water,” said Austin, who earned his first career victory in FLW competition. “I was trying to find creeks that were muddy at the base but had clean water in the backs.

“I was catching them a few different ways,” Austin continued. “I caught two in the morning out deep, then a couple up shallow and a couple off boat ramps – I was just kind of hodge-podging around.

“My first two fish came on a Carolina rig with a black Zoom Lizard, with a chartreuse tail. Two of my fish came on a Treeshaker spinnerbait and one came on a Treeshaker bladed jig. I caught a few non-keepers on a Rat-L-Trap.

“The key to my victory was probably just fishing my style of fishing,” Austin went on to say. “I like to not be on anything. I like to drive as fast as I can down the lake and fish whatever looks good.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament as follows:

1st:       Kyle Austin of Ridgeville, S.C., five bass, 13-15, $3,426

10th:     Terry Coleman of Sumter, S.C., five bass, 6-10, $200

Hoy also earned the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $215 after bringing a bass weighing 6 pounds, 13 ounces to the scale.

The 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine on Clarks Hill Lake was the second of five events in the South Carolina Division.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the South Carolina Division based on point standings, along with the five winners of each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 16-18 Bass Fishing League Regional Championship on Lake Cherokee in Jefferson City, Tennessee, hosted by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. Boaters will compete for a $60,000 prize package, including a new Phoenix 819 Pro bass boat with a 200-horsepower Mercury outboard and $10,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new 18-foot Phoenix bass boat with a 200-horsepower outboard.

The 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Phoenix Bass Fishing League All-American.

The 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League All-American will be held April 30 through May 2 at Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina and is hosted by Visit Anderson. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers plus tournament winners from each Phoenix Bass Fishing League division earn priority entry into the FLW Series, the pathway to the FLW Pro Circuit and ultimately the MLF Bass Pro Tour, where top pros compete with no entry fees.

March 10, 2020 (Emory, Texas) Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour brings the General Tire Stage Three presented by TrueTimber to Lake Fork, Texas, March 13-18, 2020.  The Bass Pro Tour features 80 of the best pro anglers in the world, including recent Stage-winner Jacob Powroznik, Texas residents Alton Jones, Jr., Alton Jones, Sr., Gary Klein, Jeff Sprague, Kelly Jordan, Jeff Kriet, Todd Faircloth and Emory-resident Takahiro Omori. Fans can interact with anglers daily at the ramp during launch (8-9:30 a.m. ET) and return (6-7 p.m. ET), as well as during weekend appearances at popular local hot spots.

“We go to many fisheries with big fish, but any bite on Lake Fork can be a fish of a lifetime, weighing in the teens,” said Alton Jones, Sr., Texas-based MLF Pro Angler. “We are going to hit it just right, with warm weather and plenty of opportunities for anglers to fish strategically for pre-spawn fish and spawning fish, which will broaden the playing field for the competition.”

While known as the “big bass factory,” Lake Fork is a slot limit lake, meaning fish of a certain size (or “slot”) must be released and only smaller or larger fish can be harvested. Due to this limitation for traditional five-fish formats, Lake Fork is not a usual stop for professional-level bass tournaments; however, the MLF catch-weigh-and-immediately-release format makes the Bass Pro Tour a perfect fit for the fishery. In this innovative format, MLF anglers weigh fish in the 16 to 24-inch slot limit and contribute them to their total weight before releasing them immediately back where they were caught.

Anglers compete on Lake Fork during the Qualifying and Knockout Round (Days 1-5) before moving to the prestigious Lake Athens on Wednesday, Mar. 18th for the Championship Round.

“The conservation-friendly MLF format allows us to have tournaments in places where we typically cannot,” said Dave Terre, Chief of Fisheries Management and Research for Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPW). “Lake Athens is one of those places – it’s a small lake, but it has been cranking out Toyota ShareLunkers over the past several years and we are looking forward to sharing that experience with the world.”

Major League Fishing will work with Texas Parks and Wildlife to properly document all Toyota Sharelunkers caught during the General Tire Stage Three presented by TrueTimber, including safely transporting all Legacy Sharelunkers weighing 13 pounds or more. Major League Fishing staff will assist Pros with the transport to ensure they can continue to compete with minimal interruption. To learn more about the Toyota Sharelunkers program, visit texassharelunker.com.

Terre added that TPW loves the MLF format and is excited for the opportunity to showcase both lakes and their conservation efforts to a nation-wide audience.

Michael Mulone, Sr. Director, MLF Events expressed gratitude to the cooperation throughout the region, including, the Lake Fork Area Chamber of Commerce, Oak Ridge Marina, and TPW.

“A 10-boat championship shootout on the 1799-acre Lake Athens in mid-March with the best anglers in the world is like a Home Run Derby at the All-Star game,” said Mulone. “We look forward to showing off these exceptional fisheries to our audience, the largest in fishing.”

Major League Fishing will showcase the fishery and the region through their award-winning, live and linear programming. Each Stage of the Bass Pro Tour is broadcast live on the Major League Fishing app, MyOutdoorTV (MOTV), and MajorLeagueFishing.com, totaling more than 54 hours of original programming for Lake Fork and Lake Athens.

Micheal Rogge, president of Lake Fork Area Chamber of Commerce, told MLF there is much excitement from citizens in the Lake Fork area regarding the Pros visiting and the exposure that MLF brings their destination.

“Lake Fork has been well known, but with the arrival of the MLF Bass Pro Tour, we can add another dimension to showcasing the abilities of Lake Fork both nationally and internationally,” explained Rogge. “The economic impact alone of MLF coming to our area brings new visitors, new money, and new opportunities, which is a huge benefit to our regional efforts.”

Several local organizations have worked with MLF to create unique opportunities for fans to meet the Pros throughout the weekend. These ALL ACCESS events give fans the opportunity to meet their favorite MLF Pros, register to win prizes, and obtain autographs, photos and fishing tips from different anglers throughout the weekend.

KODAK, Tenn. (March 10, 2020) – Boater Bobby Chambers of Newport, Tennessee, brought five bass to the scale Saturday totaling 18 pounds, 14 ounces to win the 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine event at Douglas Lake in Kodak, Tennessee. For his victory, Chambers earned a total of $3,337.

“I fished from Dandridge to the river, way up the lake,” said Chambers, who earned his first career victory in just his fifth event. “I had the boat sitting in 6 to 8 feet and was casting to the bank. Most of the fish were coming shallow – around 2-foot-deep – and they were holding to any cover near the bank.

“I caught them on a little bit of everything,” Chambers continued. “I caught some on a spinnerbait, some on a ChatterBait and some on a Rapala DT6 crankbait. Most of my fish came on a custom-painted Strike King Red Eye Shad lipless crankbait.

“I really didn’t plan on going out that far, but I had found those fish earlier in the week and knew that I was going to have to do something. We stuck it out there and the bite got better as the day went on and the sun came out. It had the fish moving up.”
