Wheeler Wins Big on Lake Eufaula: B&W Hitches Stage One presented by Power-Pole Champion Led the Field by 27 Pounds

Jacob Wheeler celebrates his B&W Hitches Stage One presented by Power-Pole win, second Bass Pro Tour win in as many years, as fans watch live on MLFNOW! at lines out.
[print_link]

February 12, 2020 (Eufaula, Ala.) Team Toyota pro Jacob Wheeler won the Bass Pro Tour B&W Hitches Stage One presented by Power-Pole with 24 bass weighing in at 68 pounds, the highest one-day total for the week. MLF Rookie Bryan Thrift led the field handsomely early in Period 1 with five catches in the first 30 minutes of competition. Ott DeFoe landed scorable bass on a steady pace all day long, including holding the lead at the of Periods 1 and 2.  Ultimately Wheeler secured a solid lead with an 11-fish run as the clock wound down.

With cameras rolling on MLFNOW! at the end of Period 3, Jacob Wheeler paused to take in the reality that he had won.

“Unbelievable,” he exclaimed. “To start off this 2020 Bass Pro Tour season with a win here on Lake Eufaula; it’s unbelievable. I owe it to everyone who supports me, especially my wife, Alicia.”

Wheeler, winner of Qualifying Round Group B and Thrift, winner of Qualifying Round Group A, each earned a Championship Round berth skipping the Knockout Round on Tuesday. A new Bass Pro Tour rule for 2020, there was some uncertainty on how a day off would fair for the advanced anglers. Thrift and Wheeler coming in first and second on Championship Round suggests that a day off is nothing to worry about.

“Second place feels like a win to me,” Thrift said. “My hat’s off to Jacob, and I have no complaints about my week. It’s a great feeling to finish well in my first Major League Fishing event.”

press release cont’d:

Ott DeFoe rode a strong morning bite to a commanding lead in the second period. He caught the Berkley Big Bass of the Day, weighing in at six pounds 15 ounces, within 90 minutes of Period 1.  As the sun passed overhead, Thrift assumed a seemingly comfortable lead before Wheeler took control for good with an impressive flurry of fish catches:11 in one hour, 24 for the day.

“I caught two right away and then the first spot dried up,” DeFoe said. “They weren’t set up the same as they were yesterday, and I couldn’t get them fired up.”

The Phoenix Boats Daily Leader award went to Jacob Wheeler with 68 pounds.

The B&W Hitches Stage One presented by Power-Pole Championship Round finished as follows:

About the Bass Pro Tour:

The Bass Pro Tour began in 2019 and features 80 of the best professional anglers in the world, including Kevin VanDam, Edwin Evers, Aaron Martens, Mike Iaconelli, Jordan Lee, and Skeet Reese. Each stage includes six days of competition using the Major League Fishing, catch-weigh-and-immediately-release format, where every bass over a variable minimum weight, which is two pounds on Lake Eufaula for Stage One, toward a cumulative weight total for the day.  Variable minimum weights are determined by fishery akin to a golf course handicap. The field of 80 anglers is divided into two groups of 40 to compete on days one and two respectively for the Shotgun Round. On days three and four, the Elimination Round culls the field based on a combined 2-day total weight from each angler’s Shotgun and Elimination Round. The top 20 anglers from each group in the Elimination Round (40 total) advance to the Knockout Round on day five, which determines who will compete on that final day, the Championship Round, for the Stage title and $100,000.

Each of Eight Stages of the Bass Pro Tour have the following payout schedule: 1st $100,000; 2nd $42,000; 3rd $30,000; 4th$24,000; 5th $18,000; 6th $16,800; 7th $15,600; 8th $14,400; 9th $13,200; 10th $12,000; 11th – 40th $6,000; Big Bass Daily $1,000; Big Bass Overall $1,000.

In addition to the economic impact on a host community, Major League Fishing showcases the region through their award-winning, live and linear programming. Each Stage of the Bass Pro Tour is broadcast live on the Major League Fishing app, MyOutdoorTV (MOTV), and majorleaguefishing.com, totaling more than 325 hours of original programming. Fans can follow the fast-paced nature of the MLF format as it unfolds on the live leaderboard through “SCORETRACKER® updates.” Highlights from each Stage of the 2020 Bass Pro Tour will air on Discovery Network beginning in July 2020 and Sportsman Channel in early 2021.

“MLF offers the strongest broadcast presence in the industry to fans and sponsors,” said Jim Wilburn, President and CEO of Major League Fishing. “And with these lakes planned for this coming Bass Pro Tour, we know 2020 will be our best year yet as we continue to capture a broad audience of both longtime fishing fans and those new to the sport, thanks to our fast-paced, fan-friendly format,”

In Every Life a Little Rain Must Fall
Fishing after the Rain
by Bruce Callis

[print_link]

The weather can be great one day and terrible the next this time of year. Depending on the day, it can rain or snow, or a little of both. We know that we need rain to fill ponds and lakes this time of year. We also know that it helps keep the ground cover wet, cutting down on the fire danger. But it sure can put a damper on our fishing. Knowing what to look for can make or break a day of fishing.

Fishing before the front comes through can be a fun time, but what about after the rain stops? It can be tough to say the least. Understanding what is happening around us is the key. Rain brings rejuvenation to the land and water. Rain falling directly into the pond or lake adds much needed oxygen to the water. And the runoff from the rain actually can be even more beneficial. It washes an influx of microorganisms, grubs and worms into the water, which draws baitfish to them. And in turn, it causes the bass to follow the baitfish into the oxygen rich water. And depending on the amount of rain, it can be either clean, fresh water or full of soil making it muddy. The intensity and amount of rainfall will also determine how long that runoff will continue to feed into the water. A heavy rain can continue to feed into the water for a couple days.

Runoff also helps create current, especially where it empties into backwater areas and coves. The more turbulence the runoff creates, the more oxygen is created. The higher the oxygen content, the higher the metabolism for the bass, and the more active they become. Another factor is what type of rain. Is it a warm rain or a cold rain, each has different factors. A cold rain brings in cold water, and for us as anglers, that is bad. Cold water slows a bass’ metabolism. That doesn’t mean you can’t catch them, just that it becomes more difficult. The bass will not run to the cold water, but rather seek out the warmer water. If it is a warm rain, then we need to go towards the runoff. Where the runoff meets the pond or lake, it can create a mud-line in the water. Where the two mix is the ideal area to fish. Bass will be holding along this edge in the water waiting to feed.

Another factor for fishing after the rain is the weather conditions. If it is overcast, and most likely low pressure, then the bass are more active and look to the runoff. If there are bluebird skies, and a high pressure, then the bass are going to be looking to go deeper and to shade. This is the time to target structure and fish close to it. Knowing where the bass are likely to gather is also a key factor.

Wind is another factor. Wind breaks up the surface of the water and allows less light penetration, thus allowing the fish to be more active. Wind pushes bait to the far shore, and where the bait goes, so do the bass. If you are on shore, fish into the wind, and in a boat, fish with the wind, casting to the windy shoreline. Look to the points and key features along the shore. If grass is present, work your baits directly along and over the grass. Yes, the wind can make boat control difficult, almost impossible at times, just remember to work with the wind and make fishing easier. Don’t be afraid to anchor down to work an area. If you don’t have anchor poles, use two anchors, one in the front of the boat and one in the rear to help control the swing of the boat.

There are no simple rules to fishing after the rain. There are so many factors to consider, how much rain, the type of rain, the water temperature, atmospheric conditions, the sky conditions, and the wind. But knowing what to look for under all the conditions will help increase your chances of finding and catching bass. Either way, you can’t catch them sitting at home. Go out and put the knowledge to work and find the bass. Each day is a chance to learn and become a better angler. Be like Bruce, just go fishing and do it! Catch a hawg!

B.A.S.S. Elite Pro Chooses Gill for Varying Tournament Weather Conditions

Gill Pro Angler Profile: Scott Canterbury

B.A.S.S. Elite Pro Chooses Gill for Varying Tournament Weather Conditions

Buford, GA (February 12, 2020) – Among Gill’s diverse roster of pro bass anglers representing the B.A.S.S. Elite Series, FLW and Major League Fishing (MLF), is Scott Canterbury. In 2019, Scott Canterbury fished his first year on the Bassmaster Elite Series…and had an incredible season, capped off being named the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year (AOY). Prior to that, Canterbury fished the FLW for 11 years, was named 2008 Rookie of the Year, and fished in the FLW Cup 10 times. Now preparing for the upcoming Bassmaster Classic in his home state of Alabama, Canterbury is excited to be working with Gill.

“Not only has Scott proved himself repeatedly in the bass tournament world,” says Tim Golden, U.S. National Sales Manager, Gill Fishing. “He’s been a real benefit to our company in terms of product design feedback, social media exposure, and more.”

Although in his inaugural year with Gill, he’s already fished many events in the gear, ultimately putting the jackets, bibs and accessories through the challenging real-world tests that pro bass anglers face every day.

“It’s been great working with Gill. Between the people that work for them—who have been fantastic—and the clothing, it’s been just an ideal relationship. All the fishing gear I have is just superior,” says Canterbury.

“When it comes to Gill’s fishing gear, I’ve got a little bit of everything. It just depends on when and where I’m competing. That determines what I’ll wear. For most tournaments, I wear the Tournament Jacket and Tournament Bib. I’ve also wear a Pro Tournament 3L Jacket and Active Bib Trousers when it’s not as cold but still wet. They perform great, too. It just depends on the weather. Gill has gear for all situations, and that’s what I really like.”

In particular, Canterbury points out that he’s impressed with the Vortex hood. “For winter tournaments and the upcoming Bassmaster Classic, I’ll be wearing the Pro Tournament 3L Jacket and the Tournament Bib. I know what kind of conditions we can have that time of year. It could be 75 degrees every day, or it could also be snowing. And the Vortex hood is a really great design. When you’re running down the lake it keeps the airstream flowing through to keep your hood right where it needs to be and keeps my Gill waterproof hat in place. I love that hat. It stays on your head when you’re running, keeps you dry, and it’s super warm.”

Canterbury is a big proponent of Gill’s new Tournament Jacket.

Canterbury adds that Gill truly offers products for every fishing situation. “Gill has gear for every possible condition we come across fishing tournaments. Whether it’s 25 or 30 degrees and raining, or 70 degrees and misting, Gill has the gear. Plus, they have a host of layering options besides insulated wear, which really plays out well in preparing for changing conditions.

“Gill also offers all the accessories – from gloves to hats to footwear. Simply, they manufacture everything an angler requires to stay comfortable on the water.”

New to Gill’s collection for 2020, the Pro Tournament 3L features a highly technical design that offers protection against the wind and water. It features 3-layer fabric construction and fully taped seams, which combined with the enduring water repellent fishing gives great protection from the elements. The Vortex hood technology has been designed to keep the hood in place when traveling at high speeds, making it perfect for getting around on a bass boat. The modern fishing jacket comes in either graphite or taupe with subtle branding across the chest. This men’s fishing jacket is also highly breathable and adorned with zippered chest pockets and spacious side pockets for added storage.

Gill is proud to announce that the entire 2020 fishing collection is currently available at www.gillfishing.com and will be on display at the Bassmaster Classic.

Looking forward to the Bassmaster Classic, marking its 50th anniversary, Canterbury believes it’s going to be one of the best events ever—for both anglers and spectators.

“Fishing the 50th anniversary Bassmaster Classic is going to be something I will always remember. I’ll be in front of my home state crowd, which will be awesome—and the conditions should be ideal for some big bags. But nobody’s quite sure what the fishing will be yet. Springtime bites can really vary. Ultimately, it’s going to come down to the weather. Fishing will be good, but the weather is going to dictate how we catch them. The lake is going to be changing at a fast pace, so while we practice a week ahead of the tournament everything can change completely. It will be interesting. This much is certain, I’m really looking forward to fishing it and going out there fully dressed and protected in the best fishing gear on the planet.”

Big Bass Fill the Knockout Round: The Top 8 Advance to the Championship Round

[print_link]

February 11, 2020 (Eufaula, Ala.) With nearly 600 pounds of fish averaging three pounds, six ounces each, B&W Hitches Stage One presented by Power-Pole Knockout Round turned into a thrilling day for anglers and fans alike. Dustin Connell steadily secured his first-place position by the end of the day with three scorable catches each period, including three over six pounds and a total of 40 pounds, six ounces. Ott DeFoe led the field with eleven total scorable catches but went scoreless in Period 3 to drop to third overall with 35 pounds, 13 ounces. With six catches ranging from three pounds to eight pounds, Jordan Lee secured second place with 36 pounds even. The top eight anglers advance to the Championship Round and a chance to win $100,000.

The top eight of the Knockout Round, who will join Qualifying Round Group A winner Bryan Thrift and Qualifying Round Group B winner Jacob Wheeler in Wednesday’s Championship are as follows:

Place Angler Total Weight Total Fish Largest Fish
1 Dustin Connell 40-06 9 6-12
2 Jordan Lee 36-00 6 8-00
3 Ott DeFoe 35-13 11 4-14
4 Takahiro Omori 32-04 9 5-07
5 Brent Chapman 29-01 8 8-15
6 Adrian Avena 28-07 7 6-03
7 Alton Jones Jr. 25-02 7 5-04
8 Brett Hite 23-07 8 5-06

Favorite Fishing Pro Connell figured out Lake Eufaula in late Period 3 with three of his catches coming in the last 40 minutes of the day, including his third bass over six pounds.

“I started off slow, but I completely abandoned what I was doing and switched to anew bait,” Connell said. “Then I started dialing into the right depth and cover and got a pattern going.”

Lee leveraged a spot on the northern side of Lake Eufaula that he remembered fishing early in his tournament days as a co-angler. His gamble earned him six big bass, including one eight-pounder.

“This is the best day I’ve ever had for big fish – in a tournament or fun fishing; it was my best day ever for big ones,” Lee said. “It was a magical day, and I can’t explain it.”

Ott DeFoe took a commanding lead early in the day and then held on to finish in third place.

“The morning was excellent, and it was the same place that was good to me yesterday,” DeFoe said of his morning.”

SCORETRACKER® fluidly moved anglers across the entire field all day as big bass catapulted some into the top eight, while others fell below the elimination line. Mike McClelland, who was fishing in his first Knockout Round in Bass Pro Tour history, caught a two-pound-10-ounce bass 13 minutes before the end of Period 3. One minute later, Alton Jones, Jr. landed a five-pound-four-ounce largemouth to knock McClelland out of the Championship.

Brent Chapman landed the Berkley Big Bass of the Day with an eight-pound-15-ounce largemouth within two hours of lines in. He currently takes the lead on the field’s race to Heavy Hitters presented by Venmo on the Kissimmee Chain, May 16-20. Each angler earns points for his biggest bass at each of the first five Stages. The 30 anglers with the heaviest “bag” earn the chance to compete for a share of the nearly $750,000 purse.

For complete results, visit MajorLeagueFishing.com, Bass Pro Tour, Results.

The competition concludes Wednesday with the Championship Round where ten anglers compete for the B&W Hitches Stage One presented by Power-Pole Title. The weather forecast indicates an overcast day with a temperature ranging from 63 degrees at launch to 77 degrees at return and a 20% chance of rain.

The day begins with launch 7:15 a.m. before lines-in at 8:00 a.m. Period 1 ends at 10:30 a.m. Period 2 spans 10:45 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. Period 3 begins at 1:30 p.m. and lasts until day’s end at 4:00 p.m. The General Tire Takeout show airs approximately 4:15 – 5:15 p.m. as anglers return to the ramp.

Eclectic’s Robinson Wins Phoenix Bass Fishing League Event on Lake Martin

Bonaire’s Denney Wins Co-angler Division

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. (Feb. 10, 2020) – Boater Dusty Robinson of Eclectic, Alabama, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday weighing 13 pounds, 4 ounces to win the 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine event at Lake Martin in Alexander City, Alabama. For his victory, Robinson earned a total of $5,686, including a $1,000 Mercury contingency award.

“I started my day out with a spinnerbait in my hand, and I didn’t put it down throughout the entire day,” said Robinson, who earned his first career Phoenix Bass Fishing League victory. “I caught around 20 keepers all day long, fishing in the Hog Pen Slough area – around the D.A.R.E. Power Park.”

Robinson’s key lure was a 3/8-ounce purple shad-colored War Eagle Spinnerbait with a white Zoom Split Tail Trailer.

“I caught them anywhere from 6 inches to 8 feet deep,” Robinson said. “The Hog Pen Slough is a main feeder creek, about mid-river. I was targeting the blowdowns and rocky secondary points. If I didn’t get bit on the bank, I’d slow roll it all the way back to the boat.

“The bite was really hot from 9:30 to 10:30 (a.m.), then there was a lull until about 1:15 (p.m.). Then it really picked up again,” Robinson continued. “The key was definitely slowing down and being patient.

“I’ve been battling against these hammers in the Bama Division for three years now, and I’ve been one bite away from the win a couple of times. It was shocking that the weights were this low – I didn’t expect to win – but it was an awesome day and I’m glad I did.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament as follows:

1st:       Dusty Robinson of Eclectic, Ala., five bass, 13-4, $5,686

2nd:      Thomas Frink of Cedartown, Ga., five bass, 12-12, $2,843

3rd:       Kip Balkcom of Auburn, Ala., five bass, 12-2, $1,562

The 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine on Lake Martin was hosted by the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce. It was the opening event of five qualifying tournaments in the Bama division.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the Bama division based on point standings, along with the five winners of each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 8-10 Bass Fishing League Regional Championship on Lake Chickamauga in Dayton, Tennessee, hosted by the Rhea Economic and Tourism Council. Boaters will compete for a $60,000 prize package, including a new Phoenix 819 Pro bass boat with a 200-horsepower Mercury outboard and $10,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new 18-foot Phoenix bass boat with a 200-horsepower outboard.

The 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Phoenix Bass Fishing League All-American.

The 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League All-American will be held April 30 through May 2 at Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina and is hosted by Visit Anderson. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers plus tournament winners from each Phoenix Bass Fishing League division earn priority entry into the FLW Series, the pathway to the FLW Pro Circuit and ultimately the MLF Bass Pro Tour, where top pros compete with no entry fees.

Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit Set for Florida’s Harris Chain of Lakes Presented by Bad Boy Mowers

Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit Set for Florida’s Harris Chain of Lakes Presented by Bad Boy Mowers

LEESBURG, Fla. (Feb. 11, 2020) – The second event of the 2020 season for the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit, professional bass fishing’s premier five-fish limit tournament series, kicks off next week, Feb. 20-23 with the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit at the Harris Chain of Lakes presented by Bad Boy Mowers. Hosted by Lake County, the tournament will feature 154 bass-fishing professionals from around the world competing for a top award of up to $135,000 and valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2020 FLW TITLE, the Pro Circuit Championship.

“This is going to be a really fun tournament,” said Pro Circuit pro Tim Frederick of Leesburg, who has four career top-10 finishes in FLW competition. “We’re going to see fish in all three phases – prespawn, spawn and postspawn – and guys are going to be able to fish in a multitude of ways and have success.”

Beside Lake Harris, tournament waters include Lake Apopka, Lake Griffin, Lake Eustis, Lake Dora, Lake Carlton, Horseshoe Lake, Little Lake Harris, Lake Denham and Lake Beauclair. In addition to providing plenty of water to fish, there are miles of canals around each lake that competitors can access.

“I think we’ll see the field really split up, and I expect that there will be tournament boats in every lake,” Frederick continued. “The key will be finding an area that has fish steady coming to you – moving in to spawn or back out after they spawn. A staging area where the fish are migrating in and out of will be the winning spot.”

With all three stages of the spawn expected to be in play, Frederick expects shallow-water cranking – squarebill and lipless crankbaits – to be strong, along with flipping and casting soft-plastics. He said if the weather cooperates a topwater bite could come into play.

“The bedding fish will be important,” Frederick said. “I think the canals will be extremely popular. Guys are going to see 7-, 8- and 10-pounders on beds and that will draw them in like a magnet. But, it’s really tough to win on bed fish alone.

“I’m going to be a little conservative and predict that the winner is going to end with a four-day total right around 80 pounds,” Frederick went on to say. “The exciting thing about the Harris Chain is that you can catch a 10-pounder on any cast. I think we’ll see at least a half a dozen limits over 25 pounds.”

Anglers will take off at 7 a.m. EST each day from the Venetian Gardens, located at 201 E. Lake Harris Drive, in Leesburg. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins, Feb. 20-21, will be held at the Gardens beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s weigh-ins, Feb. 22-23, will also be held at the Gardens, but will begin at 4 p.m.

“Lake County is excited to welcome back the Tackle Warehouse FLW Pro Circuit to the Harris Chain of Lakes for the third time in four years,” said Brandon Matulka, Executive Director, Lake County Agency for Economic Prosperity. “The economic impact of this event is significant to our community and we are proud to have been selected to host the Circuit again alongside our great partners with the City of Leesburg. We wish all of the anglers a safe and memorable time throughout the event on the Harris Chain and we hope to show them, and the rest of the country, why we are called ‘Lake Big Bass!’”

Television coverage of the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit at the Harris Chain of Lakes will premiere in 2020. The 2020 Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit will have 156 two-hour airings on network television, including 26 consecutive weeks of Friday night primetime airing on Outdoor Channel and 130 airings on Sportsman Channel for a total of 312 hours of Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit programming.

The popular FLW Live on-the-water broadcast will air on Days Three and Four of the event, featuring live action from the boats of the tournament’s top pros each day. Host Travis Moran is joined by Toyota Series pro Todd Hollowell to break down the extended action each day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. On-the-water broadcasts will be live streamed on FLWFishing.com, the FLW YouTube channel and the FLW Facebook page.

For youth, the FLW Foundation’s Youth Fishing Derby will be held at the Venetian Gardens on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. The event is hosted by Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit anglers and is free and open to any youth 14 and under. Rods and reels are available for use, but youth are encouraged to bring their own if they own one. The 1st and 2nd place anglers that catch the biggest fish will be recognized Saturday on the FLW Pro Circuit stage, just prior to the pros weighing in. The first 50 youth registered will receive a free goodie bag. Youth can register on-site or pre-register by emailing [email protected].

As part of the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit’s community outreach initiative, Pro Circuit anglers will visit teenage anglers at the Lake County Teen Sportfishing Association. The appearance will take place at the Lake Harris Shores Club House, located at 13102 Country Club Drive in Tavares, Florida. Anglers will visit with the youth anglers, give tips and tactics for local fisheries, snap photos, sign autographs and share fishing stories.

In Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit competition, the full field of 155 pro anglers compete in the two-day opening round on Thursday and Friday. The top 30 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advance to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continue competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.

Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2020 FLW TITLE, the Pro Circuit Championship. The 2020 FLW TITLE will be on the St. Lawrence River in Massena, New York, Aug. 8-13 and is hosted by the Town of Massena.
