Missouri’s Huff Wins Toyota Series Season Opener on Toledo Bend Reservoir

Missouri’s Huff Wins Toyota Series Season Opener
on Toledo Bend Reservoir

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANY, La. (Feb. 1, 2020) – Boater Cody Huff of Ava, Missouri – a standout collegiate angler for Bethel University – brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday totaling 17 pounds, 15 ounces to win the three-day Toyota Series at Toledo Bend Reservoir. Huff’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 61-11 gave him the win by a commanding 7-pound, 11-ounce margin and earned him a payout of $35,395 in the season opening Toyota Series event.

Huff has had a pretty good run on Toledo Bend over the last two weeks. First, he and Bethel University partner Dakota Pierce won the Bassmaster College Series event on Toledo Bend last week. After driving home to drop Pierce off, Huff returned earlier this week for another round on the Sabine River impoundment. Three more days of fishing later, he locked up the first FLW win of his career.

The Missouri angler played a simple game plan throughout both the college event and the Toyota Series event – fish like he would back home in the Ozarks with a jigging spoon for suspended fish. However, he didn’t come south with that game plan in mind.

“The fish were shallower early last week in the mouths of the creeks, but when that cold front hit, it moved them,” said Huff, who was competing in his ninth event as a boater on the Toyota Series. “The first day of the college tournament we caught them close to the creeks, the second day halfway out and the third day out in the main river channel.”

That wave of fish movement is almost exactly how things shook out this week. The bait and bass pushed halfway back towards the creeks from the river channel over the first two days. On the final day, Huff had to scramble around to relocate the fish back near the main channel.

Working three primary areas from Cypress Bend Park down to just north of Housen Bay, Huff spent the majority of his time in anywhere from 40 to 70 feet of water scanning with his electronics to stay with the bait and the bass. Suspended bass were the target and the higher they sat in the water, the easier they were to catch.

“From 11 o’clock on those bass started to group up and that’s when you could really catch them,” the 22-year-old pro said. “Whenever you’d see them in that 15- to 30-foot range, they’re catchable. When they get below that they’re not really feeding, but when they’re up in and around that bait you can catch them.”

Even though sun would help to group the bass up, the bright skies on Saturday had Huff scrambling for a bite with two hours to go. Having only a small spotted bass and keeper largemouth in the box shortly after noon, Huff was beginning to wonder if his luck had run out.

“I thought today was the perfect conditions and I was going to stroke them,” he said. “I pulled up to two of my best places and there wasn’t a ball of bait within a mile. The best place had them good for the last two weeks, and they were gone. I checked it four or five times today and they never pulled up.”

Once the day got nice and the wind calmed down, Huff revisited a spot he checked in the morning.

“With two hours to go I catch a 3-pounder and see there is a mega-school down there,” said Huff. “One of the biggest schools I’ve seen all week. I flipped back and only one fish comes to meet my spoon out of the school and follows it for three or four jerks and about that time I lock up and it’s an 8-8. I got a limit and with about 30 minutes left my trolling motor batteries were so dead that my foot pedal wouldn’t even move on my Ultrex, so I came in.”

One rod is all Huff needed on Toledo Bend and a 7/8-ounce jigging spoon was the ticket. He threw it on a 6-foot, 8-inch Johnny Morris Signature Series rod with a 7.8:1 Johnny Morris Signature Series reel spooled up with 12-pound Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon line.

The Toyota Series on Toledo Bend Reservoir was hosted by the Sabine Parish Tourist Commission. It was the first of three regular-season tournaments in 2020 for Southwestern Division anglers. The next tournament for Toyota Series anglers will be the Southern Division opener – the Toyota Series at the St. Johns River, held Feb. 13-15 in Palatka, Florida. For a complete schedule, visit FLWFishing.com.

The Toyota Series consists of eight divisions – Central, Eastern, Northern, Plains, Southeastern, Southern, Southwestern and Western – each holding three regular-season events, along with the International division. Anglers who fish all three qualifiers in any of the eight divisions and finish in the top 25 will qualify for the no-entry-fee Toyota Series Championship for a shot at winning $200,000 cash, plus lucrative contingency bonuses. The winning co-angler at the championship earns a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard. The 2020 Toyota Series Championship is being held Nov. 5-7 on Lake Cumberland in Burnside, Kentucky, and is hosted by the Somerset Tourist & Convention Commission and the Burnside Tourism Commission.

The Urban Jungle Peacocks, largemouth, and more in suburban south Florida

Urban Jungle The Bass Cast

Peacocks, largemouth, and more in suburban south Florida

[print_link]

“We’ll start with largemouth, then look for peacocks later,” said my guide Captain Craig Korczynski, as we idled past several boat docks crawling with iguanas. “The peacock bite is best around noon, but we have some huge bass we can target in the meantime.” For years the butterfly peacock bass has been a dream fish of mine to catch, but with the high cost of traveling to South America, it seemed my bucket list would have to go unchecked. That is until learning of a small area in Southeast Florida where these feisty imports are thriving. Introduced in the 1980s by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission as a means to control the Mayan cichlid population, this voracious exotic flourished in the sunshine state’s warm year round conditions along with several others including the midas cichlid, oscar, jaguar guapote (tiger bass), bullseye snakehead, and clown knife fish. Unable to tolerate high salinity and water temperatures below 62 degrees, the peacock’s range geographically limited to the urban canal system along the southeast region of the state.

Paradise Found

The balmy tropical climate of Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami Dade Counties are similar to the peacock’s native habitat of Brazil. Broward and Miami Dade are considered the heart of peacock country, but after several years of mild winters, large numbers have migrated further north into the Palm Beach County Chain of Lakes. Interconnecting Pine Lake in West Palm south through Lake Clarke, Lake Osborne, Lake Eden, and ending in Lake Ida near Delray Beach, the 30 mile long chain is also known for producing huge largemouth bass. Generally considered the northern tip of the peacock’s range, this area is a prime intersection for targeting both species. Bisected with hundreds of residential canals that make great peacock haunts, each of the Chain’s lake bottoms contain a deep linear trough called the West Palm Beach Canal that runs north and south throughout. Spoil deposits left from its construction form bottom undulations attracting largemouth year round.

Lunker Morning

“Cast straight out that way,” pointed Korczynski, while staring at the screen of his Humminbird Helix 10. “We should be right on the hump.” Starting the morning out casting worms near the canal in Lake Clarke, it took only minutes before his rod was feeling the strain from a big fish. “That’s a pig!” he shouted, as a massive largemouth breached the surface shaking its head from side to side. After several tense moments, he managed to wrangle the stocky fish into the Gheenoe for a photo. “You sure you still want to go after peacocks today? He joked. For enticing largemouth, Korczynski prefers Carolina rigging 8” finesse worms in either green avocado or junebug, similar colors that work well in neighboring Lake Okeechobee. For fighting open water fish, he opts for a 7’ Team Daiwa medium light spinning rod, paired with a Daiwa Procyon EX spinning reel, spooled with 10 pound test TUF-Line Domin8 braided line.
Co Habitation

“The largemouth in this system generally prefer the main lake bodies, grass lines, mud bottoms, deep holes, and heavily vegetated areas,” he explained. “During times when the locks and spillways from Lake Okeechobee are open, there can be a lot of water movement in these canals, so they’ll concentrate in the main lake channels where it’s most prevalent, whereas peacocks won’t tolerate areas with sustained current.”

Preferring hard bottom, rocks, and structure like dock pilings, rocks, and seawalls, peacocks can be targeted almost exclusively in areas with hard structure nearby. “During winter, metal seawalls are a great place to find them as the sun heats up the metal faster than other materials,” explained Korczynski. “And during spring they’ll concentrate near them to spawn, fanning out their beds as close to it as possible to protect the eggs.”

Peacocks

For all their aggression, peacocks don’t hit plastic worms, instead preferring small colorful lures that mimic their main forage base – the midas and mayan cichlids. Bright orange and green hard baits like a Rat-L-Trap mini-trap in strawberry sunfish, Rapala Floating Minnow in fluorescent orange, and topwater popper flies will draw some impressive strikes, but for bedding fish go with small jigs, sinking flies, or Korczynski’s favorite – a 3 inch DOA shrimp in either fire tiger or copper crush. Using the same spinning gear for peacocks as he does for largemouth, the only difference in the set up is that he tips the braid with a two foot section of 20 pound Ande fluorocarbon leader. “Peacocks have a seriously abrasive mouth and some of these males can reach up to eight pounds, so you need a minimum 20 pound leader to prevent break offs.”

Bucket List Peacock

By noon I was chomping at the bit to go after peacocks. As much fun as it was winching up largemouth from the lake bottom, I couldn’t wait to tango with this fierce exotic.
Arriving at a seawall clustered with sandy potholes, I began pitching my lure to a stubborn fish nestled in one of the depressions. “That’s actually a Mayan,” said Korczynski, as I prepared another flip at what looked similar to the shape of a peacock. “There all actually cichlids, but the best way to identify them from each other is that peacocks have three vertical bars going down their side, cichlids have five, and oscars have dots.” Scanning the bed next to it, I spotted a three barred fish with green sides and a distinct orange underbelly leaving no doubt it was a peacock. “Pitch it past him then bring it on the bed and twitch it,” Craig advised. “With a slight twitch of the rod tip the fish charged the lure with the ferocity of a bull, then in the blink of an eye puffed it out of the bed without taking it into its mouth. “Try again,” he said. “They’ll do this a lot, but eventually they’ll take it once you agitate them enough.” Another pitch, but time the lure clanged against the base of the steel wall and was quickly devoured after dropping into the water. “There you go,” said Craig, as my drag spun momentarily. Before long I was proudly holding my first peacock bass.

When to Go

Florida peacocks generally aren’t active until noon, pretty much the opposite of a largemouth schedule, so you can make a day of catching both species as long as you can stand the midday heat during the spring and summer months. May through September is the easiest time to bed fish peacocks if sight fishing’s your game, but during April, the largemouth spawn is in full swing, and the peacock’s pre-spawn ritual consists of crushing topwater lures like their Amazonian cousins. This is the peak window to catch both a big female largemouth, and a big hump-headed male peacock all in the same trip. Regardless of what time of year you choose to visit, be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, extra lures, and plenty of iguana repellant, as you just never know what you may encounter in the urban jungle.

Robertson Scores Big On Final Day To Win B.A.S.S. Nation On Okeechobee

Matthew Robertson, of Kuttawa, Ky., won the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Southeastern Regional on Lake Okeechobee with a three-day total of 59 pounds, 14 ounces.

Robertson Scores Big On Final Day To Win B.A.S.S. Nation On Okeechobee
[print_link]

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. — Faith in his area rewarded Matt Robertson with his biggest limit of the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Southeastern Regional on Lake Okeechobee and delivered the winning three-day total weight of 59 pounds, 14 ounces.

For his victory, Robertson, the angler from Kuttawa, Ky., who became a fan favorite for his onstage antics during last year’s Bassmaster Classic, earned $5,000 and a spot in the 2020 B.A.S.S. Nation Championship on Pickwick Lake.

Robertson, who finished first on the Kentucky B.A.S.S. Nation team, started strong on Day 1 with a fourth-place limit of 19-14. He followed with 17-8 on Day 2 and reached Friday’s Championship round in third place. Adding 22-8 on Day 3 allowed him to surge ahead with a winning margin of 3-1.

“The last few days, I caught quantity and not quality,” Robertson said. “Today, I only caught about 15 fish. But when my second fish was a 5-pounder, my gut told me it was going to happen.”

Committing all three days to the south end of Lake Okeechobee, Robertson said he stayed in a 600-yard area the entire time. This area had a mix of pencil reeds, flat reeds, Kissimmee grass and hyacinth — and with very little company, he was able to cover water at his leisure and hunt for aggressive prespawn bass.

With practice delivering a few giant bites, Robertson said he felt confident he was around the right caliber of fish. His hope was that these fish would become more available once the weather stabilized in the wake of a cold front that passed through prior to the event.

“I knew those big ones would move in, so I stayed in there all day,” Robertson said. “I had it all to myself. One other boat came in each afternoon for about 20 minutes

“I’m a run-and-gun guy, but I dropped the trolling motor. The first day I caught 60 fish, the second day I caught about 40. Today, I caught (fewer) but they got bigger. I think those big females were moving in to spawn.”

Robertson caught his fish on a Strike King 4.75 Rage Swimmer in ayu rigged on a 5/0 swimbait hook and a 1/8-ounce bullet weight. A burning retrieve produced best.

“I didn’t try to get dialed in on one thing, I fished it all,” he said. “I just went up and down stuff and, man, I got the bites. My biggest one was about 6 pounds.”

Essential to Robertson’s presentation was 65-pound Strike King Tour Grade braided line. He said he would have preferred to use fluorocarbon, but he didn’t want to risk a heartbreak amid the heavy Florida vegetation.

Bryan Gunter of Ninety Six, S.C., looked like an unstoppable force the first two days, but he saw his bite dwindle in the Championship round. Sacking up a 20-pound Day 1 bag put Gunter in third place, and adding 23-8 on Day 2 gave him the lead going into the championship round.

His final effort turned up 13-5 and Gunter slipped to second with a three-day total of 56-13.

“I caught my biggest fish by flipping pencil reeds and bulrush with a Zoom Speed Worm and a Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver; and I caught numbers by fishing a Gambler EZ Swimmer or a Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper over eelgrass flats,” Gunter said.

David Gorman of Canton, Ga., finished in third place with 56-7. Mounting the event’s biggest comeback, Gorman placed 51st on Day 1 after catching 10-3 limit. He roared back the following day with the tournament’s third-heaviest catch — 23-5 — and rose to 10th. Adding 22-15 on the final day pushed Gorman to a third-place finish with 56-7.

“I was fishing needle grass and arrowheads in 1 1/2 feet of water and burning a Gambler Big EZ swimbait in the copper field color on a 6/0 screw lock hook with a 1/4-ounce weight,” Gorman said. “In practice, it was all bucks (male bass) and in the tournament, the big mamas started coming in.”

Jeff Lugar of Cross Junction, Va., won the Big Bass award with his 9-10 largemouth.

Jim Topmiller of Orlando, Fla., won the nonboater division with 36-2. Topmiller took the lead on Day 1 with 14-10, held his position the next day by adding 9-1 and closed the door in the final round with a limit of 12-1.

“Today was tough; I didn’t have my two big ones until about 1 o’clock, and they came pretty near one another on a Berkley Grass Pig swimbait rigged on a 4/0 VMC swimbait hook with a 1/8-ounce (weighted shank),” Topmiller said. “I caught the earlier ones on a Berkley Burner Worm rigged on a 5/0 hook with a 3/16-ounce bullet weight, pegged.”

Mike Caul won the Big Bass competition among nonboaters with a 9-8 largemouth.

Unpredictable Florida Weather Will Be A Factor In Bassmaster Elite Series Opener

Unpredictable Florida Weather Will Be A Factor In Bassmaster Elite Series Opener

PALATKA, Fla. — The St. Johns River is a fertile fishery with proven big-bass potential, but local Bassmaster Elite Series pro Cliff Prince said the fishery will provide a challenging chessboard when the Elites kick off their 2020 season there.

Competition days will be Thursday through Sunday, with daily takeoffs from Palatka City Dock and Boat Ramp at 7:15 a.m. ET. Weigh-ins will be held at 3:15 p.m. at Palatka Riverfront Park.

Grass will play a role — or more specifically, the lack thereof. Historically, the St. Johns has held lush fields of eelgrass, but the majority of this thin-bladed vegetation fell victim to a one-two punch delivered in 2017 when Hurricane Irma ripped up existing grass and dumped a massive volume of water into the system. Dark outflows from local swamps blocked sunlight and impeded regeneration.

The habitat picture was also dire last February when the Elite Series opened its season on the St. Johns. But the event benefitted from a major meteorological whip cracking, and B.A.S.S. legend Rick Clunn claimed his 16th Bassmaster victory with an astounding 98 pounds, 14 ounces.

Prince says weather patterns may sway the script again.

“Last year, we had the perfect storm of conditions,” said Prince, who lives in Palatka and considers the St. Johns his home fishery. “We had a month of really cold weather and then all of a sudden, we had a week of 80 degrees. If the forecast holds, I don’t foresee another scenario like that.

“We are going to have a full moon on Saturday of the tournament, so you know there’s going to be some big females pulling up (shallow) somewhere. It’s just a matter of how many and who can capitalize on that.”

Stretching 310 miles from its marshy headwaters in Lower Indian River County to its Atlantic Ocean exit through Jacksonville’s Mayport Inlet, the St. Johns is Florida’s longest and its only north-flowing river. Fed mostly be storm water and natural springs, the St. Johns’ low flow rate of 0.3 mph classifies it as a “lazy” river.

That being said, the St. Johns’ coastal connection also makes it a partially tidal fishery. As Prince notes, daily ebb and flow fluctuates the water level in 72-square-mile Lake George — the most commonly fished pool, located south of the tournament’s takeoff and weigh-in site — and nearby Crescent Lake.

Noting that the lack of eelgrass will make the St. Johns fish small, Prince said the one significant patch on the east side of Lake George may be less productive than normal.

“The wind’s supposed to blow out of the west for a week, so that patch of grass is going to get (disrupted),” he said.

While the primary habitat source may be lacking, the St. Johns River and its major pools offer several viable options. Offshore shell bars often hold staging prespawners, while laydowns, stumps and loads of docks provide substantial targets.

“There’s a lot more vegetation — pads, hyacinth, pennywort — south of Lake George,” Prince said. “I don’t go down there a lot, just because of the no-wake zones and (manatee) speed zones, but some guys may capitalize on that.”

In the floating vegetation, flipping/punching beaver-style baits will produce. Similarly, dock and laydown fish like those Texas rigs and jigs. For searching open water, Prince suggests lipless baits, spinnerbaits, bladed jigs and topwaters.

A full field of 88 anglers will fish the first two days, with only the Top 40 making it to Saturday’s semifinal round. Only the Top 10 remaining anglers will advance to Championship Sunday with a chance to win the $100,000 first-place prize.

Prince said he expects 15 pounds a day to make the Top 10 Championship Sunday cut, but fireworks are never far away.

“If you look back in the history of the Elites visiting the St. Johns, the person that wins always has a 28- to 31-pound bag,” Prince said. “Somebody’s going to run into three big ones in a day — somebody always does.”

The AFTCO Bassmaster Elite at St. Johns River is being hosted by the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce.

Florida Takes B.A.S.S. Nation Team Title On Lake Okeechobee

The Florida B.A.S.S. Nation team won the team championship at the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Southeastern Regional on Lake Okeechobee with a two-day total of 396 pounds, 3 ounces.

Florida Takes B.A.S.S. Nation Team Title On Lake Okeechobee
OKEECHOBEE, Fla. — Consistency was key for the Florida B.A.S.S. Nation team, which backed up a Wednesday leading weight of 197 pounds, 6 ounces with 198-13 Thursday to win the team championship at the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Southeastern Regional on Lake Okeechobee with a two-day total of 396 pounds, 3 ounces.

For their accomplishment, the Florida team won $6,250. The second-place South Carolina B.A.S.S. Nation team, which posted the event’s largest combined single-day weight on Day 2 — 215-12 — won $3,750 and the third-place North Carolina B.A.S.S. Nation team won $2,000.

Florida B.A.S.S. Nation team captain David Driggers said his team’s deep well of Okeechobee knowledge proved helpful in tracking down quality fish during the often-tricky period of prespawn to spawning. Essential to maximizing this potential was the low-key team fellowship that fostered strategic interaction.

“I tried to keep them together every night since Sunday when we got together and made sure everyone got out on the water (for practice),” Driggers said. “The biggest thing was getting the anglers together in the evenings, feed them and let them enjoy the camaraderie. With that atmosphere, we’ve found that the anglers tend to talk among themselves without anyone telling them to do so.”

Noting that his team members dispersed throughout the lake, Driggers said the anglers experienced two mechanical issues, but everyone made it back to tournament site without incident.

B.A.S.S. Nation President Jon Stewart lauded the Florida team’s steady performance. With a wide age diversity, the winners have plenty of experience and longevity.

“It was just a really consistent team-wide effort,” he said. “We noticed that on Day 1, Florida didn’t have any boaters in the Top 10; they were just consistent throughout. Other teams had two or three teams that caught a big bag, while other team members struggled.

“There are a couple of high schoolers on that Florida team and one of them (sixth-place nonboater Zack Barrera) made the cut to fish in the final round.”

As Stewart observed, the winning team overcame a common impediment of tournament fishing and, in fact, leveraged the home-field advantage to their benefit.

“Nine times out of 10, the home lake is a curse where the team doesn’t really (perform well),” he said. “But the weather has been kind of inconsistent with cold fronts on and off, and I think the local anglers’ knowledge of what Florida bass do in a cold front scenario helped the Florida team this year.”

Driggers agrees that local knowledge aided his team: “Obviously, knowing the body of water played into our win. Since it was right here in our backyard, we more or less let the guys fish where they wanted to fish. There was no directing the lake; most of them knew this body of water and for the ones that weren’t familiar with it, we tried to explain it to them what they needed to try, but for the most part, it was just go out and have fun and enjoy the event.”

Leading the Florida B.A.S.S. Nation team standings, Ray Trudeau of St. Cloud, enters tomorrow’s final round in fifth place with 35-9. Jim Topmiller of Orlando, maintained his lead in the nonboater division with 24-1.

“Ray Trudeau is a hammer in the state of Florida; he’s fished the Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens, and he’s made it to the B.A.S.S. Nation National Championship,” Driggers said. “He struggled the first day (13-5), but had a great sack (22-4) today.

“The nonboaters are always at the mercy of what the boaters are doing, but Jim (Topmiller) is one who can adapt wherever you put him.”

Bryan Gunter of Ninety Six, S.C., leads individual standings with 43-8. The only angler to reach the 20-pound mark both days, Gunter moved up from third place by bolstering his Day 1 catch of 20 pounds with 23-8 — the heaviest bag of Day 2 and second-heaviest overall (behind Day 1 leader Mark Pierce’s 23-12).

“My best spot yesterday produced my biggest fish and it produced my biggest fish again today,” Gunter said of the shallow vegetation he targeted first each day. “My secondary spot really picked up. I caught two there yesterday and seven today and they were bigger. I caught my fish on a mix of reaction baits and flipping.”

Jeff Lugar of Cross Junction, Va., is in second place with 38-0. Matthew Robertson of Kuttawa, Ky., is in third place with 37-6.

Lugar leads is in the lead for Big Bass honors with his 9-10.

Mike Caul leads the Big Bass competition among nonboaters with a 9-8.

Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 7 a.m. ET at C. Scott Driver Park. The weigh-in will be held at the park at 3:15 p.m.

The event is being hosted by Okeechobee County.

Founding Sponsor Bass Cat Renews
with MLF in 2020

January 30, 2020 (Tulsa, Okla.) Major League Fishing (MLF) announced today that Bass Cat, the longest continuously operating tournament bass boat company in the United States, extended their sponsorship of the Bass Pro Tour and Major League Fishing Cup events for a ninth consecutive year. Highlights include comprehensive linear and digital advertising across livestream, Discovery, and Sportsman Channel, as well as presenting sponsorship of a Stage of the 2020 Bass Pro Tour. Details of the deal were not disclosed.

“Not many people realize that Bass Cat is the founding sponsor of MLF;” commented Rick Pierce, President, Bass Cat and Yar-Craft Boats. “We’ve enjoyed a lot of firsts in our 49 years of doing business, but nothing quite matches supporting MLF as it evolves into the exceptional television, live stream, and league property it is today.”

In support of MLF’s angler-centric philosophy, Bass Cat first signed with Major League Fishing in 2011 as they prepared to launch a 24-angler, made-for-television tournament series in partnership with Outdoor Channel in early 2012. MLF Cup events premiered a fast-paced, catch-weigh-immediately-release format in which anglers compete in three periods each day with every fish over a minimum weight counting toward that day’s total. The MLF Cup events have grown into the highest rated property on Outdoor Channel each quarter its aired.

In 2019 MLF expanded by launching the Bass Pro Tour featuring 80 of the best professional anglers in the world, including Kevin VanDam, Edwin Evers, Aaron Martens, Mike Iaconelli, Jordan Lee, and Skeet Reese. Each Stage includes six days of competition using the Major League Fishing, catch-weigh-and-immediately-release format.

Each Stage of the Bass Pro Tour is broadcast live on the Major League Fishing app, MyOutdoorTV (MOTV), and MajorLeagueFishing.com, totaling more than 325 hours of original programming. Fans can follow their favorite pros in the fast-paced nature of the MLF format as it unfolds on the live leaderboard through “SCORETRACKER® updates.” Highlights from each Stage of the 2020 Bass Pro Tour will air on Discovery Network beginning in July 2020 and Sportsman Channel in early 2021.

“MLF offers the strongest broadcast presence in the industry to fans and sponsors,” said Jim Wilburn, President and CEO of Major League Fishing. “Bass Cat understands the value of taking a risk to invest in the future of our sport; we’re grateful for Rick’s vision, leadership, and friendship, as together our companies chart new opportunities for anglers at all levels.”

[print_link]

Salem, Va. – January 30, 2020 – Missile Baits, a soft plastics bass fishing lure company based in Salem, Virginia, is adding Ron Champion, professional kayak angler, to their promotional team. Champion will give Missile Baits his expertise and reach to the kayak world, a very fast-growing segment of fishing for all age groups. Champion brings the experience of fishing over 200 kayak tournaments and the result of over 100 top 10 finishes. As his name suggests, Ron Champion has won his fair share of national and regional kayak tournaments. Ron has also competed in numerous international kayak tournaments for various species of fish.

John Crews, Missile Baits owner and pro bass angler said, “The last couple years, I have gotten to know and follow Ron. He is a super nice, humble, family man but he can sure catch fish out of a kayak. His track record proves just that. Ron will really help show and teach people how to utilize all of our Missile Baits to catch fish out of a kayak.”
“To get paired up with a company that fills tackle boxes with baits that catch fish is a big deal for me,” added Ron Champion. “John knows what bass anglers need and it going to be fun to show the kayak world more about what Missile Baits has to offer.”

Ron and his family reside in Richmond Hill, Georgia but he grew up in central Tennessee. His time in Tennessee combine with his experience in Georgia and traveling to give him a very well-rounded skill set as an angler. When not on the water, Champion enjoys hunting, golf, and collecting vintage fishing lures. Be sure to follow him on his social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
