Hobie’s Bass Open Series expands in 2020, season opener on Lake Seminole in Georgia

B.O.S is the BOMB

Hobie’s Bass Open Series expands in 2020, season opener on Lake Seminole in Georgia

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (January 30, 2020) – In NASCAR, it’s like the perennial season opener in Daytona Beach, FL. Racers slide on their gloves and tilt down their helmet shields while eyeballing the competition. Off the starting line they swerve controllably to heat their tires for traction. And then the drivers follow the safety car around the final pace lap before giving it the throttle at the starting line.

For competitive kayakers, the scene is markedly different, but the anticipation and adrenaline fully equal. These hardcore, people-powered anglers ready their paddles, spin their props or give the fins a few pumps of the pedals. Knots are checked one last time. Rods strategically placed for a moment’s-notice summons. And they fixate on their watches for start time, this year on Lake Seminole in Bainbridge, GA.

Enter in inaugural day of Hobie’s 2020 Bass Open Series (B.O.S).

Now in its second season, the catch-photo-release (CPR) format B.O.S. continues expanding the horizons of competitive kayak angling nationwide. “The B.O.S. increases the opportunities and visibility for competitive anglers, and lets them fish at a very high level,” said Hobie’s Tournament Director and Southeast Sales Representative AJ McWhorter. In addition to his official duties, McWhorter has been a proud member of the Hobie Fishing Team for eight years.

Beyond the hand-to-fish combat on the water, McWhorter speaks to some of the takeaways – besides cold hard cash – that benefit participants: “It’s about networking, too. You’ll learn and grow as a kayak angler being around such excellent talent. And whether you aspire to generate income in competitive kayak fishing, or just want to elevate your presence in your own kayak fishing community, the B.O.S. lends a fantastic platform.”

There is fun, food and fraternity at each event as well. Hobie provides a free meal at every event, which includes raffles for sponsored prizes.

Beginning in early February, the B.O.S., which is open to anglers fishing in any brand of kayak, will be hosting nine individual tournaments in 2020. Cost for the two-day, weekend, open tournaments is $235, with a maximum of 200 boats per event. The top 10% of the field in each event receive cash payouts. And the top three non-qualified anglers from each open qualify for the Tournament of Champions (T.O.C).

Last season’s Tournament of Champions (T.O.C) victor Jody Queen with Hobie ambassador Mike Iaconelli.

Held on Arkansas’ Lake Ouachita out of Mountain Harbor Resort last November, the T.O.C field consists of the top 50 anglers competing in the 2020 B.O.S. Location of the 2020 T.O.C. to be announced at a later date.

Kayakers also vie for the coveted Angler of the Year (AOY) crown. The top 100 anglers at each B.O.S. aggregate points toward earning the title. And beyond the guaranteed $5,000 cash payout to the 2020 AOY, he or she will also receive a customized, fully rigged Hobie Pro Angler 14 with 360 Drive Technology, Power-Pole® Micro Anchor and invitation to the Hobie Fishing Worlds! (The AOY second place finisher receives $3,000 cash and invitation to the Hobie Fishing Worlds, while third place earns $2,000 cash and an invitation to the Hobie Fishing Worlds.)

Competitors in all B.O.S. events automatically qualify for a luck-of-the-draw prize at the end of the season: customized Hobie Mirage Outback. The more events you fish the better your odds of winning, as competitors earn chances at each event, with a maximum of ten entries. Winner of the Hobie Mirage Outback to be announced at the 2020 T.O.C.

And who doesn’t like a Calcutta, a side bet? Bassin’ Magazine is sponsoring a side pot at each B.O.S. event for the largest bass caught during the tournament, and at no additional cost to the angler. The size of the cash side pot will be determined by the number of anglers in each event.

In the big picture, McWhorter sees Hobie’s B.O.S. as a much larger stage for growing the sport of kayak fishing. “Sure, the B.O.S. is a large platform, but the greater interest and exposure trickles down into fun local tournaments, grassroots efforts, and the general recruitment of new kayak anglers.

“There is literally something out there for everyone.”

Hobie’s B.O.S. circuit employees sophisticated software to facilitate the Catch-Photo-Release (CPR) format.

LAKE SEMINOLE – BAINBRIDGE, GA – FEBRUARY 1-2

What is better than a 2 for 1? Try a 3 for 1… That’s the weekend special for Hobie B.O.S. competitors fishing the season opener on Georgia’s Lake Seminole. “The reservoir is like three fisheries in one,” says veteran kayak tournament competitor and Hobie Fishing Team member Shane Williams from Orange Park, Florida.

Williams, a fulltime power systems operator, sees each arm of Seminole – Chattahoochee River, Flint River and Spring Creek – as completely unique. He says the Chattahoochee is mostly stained; Flint River colored but not dark; and Spring Creek, clear. To that, he expects bass to be caught and registered in all three environments…but at the hands of very different techniques.

“Given Seminoles diversity, anglers can fish to their strengths, making the event very competitive no matter your style of fishing,” said Williams.

On a recent prefishing expedition, Williams fished everything from grass flats to channel breaks and boat docks, to sprawling beds of hydrilla and hyacinth. And he has some theories going into the tournament: “It’s been a warm winter, and until the recent spells of cold weather, the fish were still shallow, hanging in creek mouths and grass. By tournament time, if the current warming trend continues, we might be looking at prespawn behavior.”

Hobie Fishing Team member Shane Williams.

Beyond the battle on the lake, Williams points out the even more meaningful camaraderie the tournament scene bestows. “I’m sharing a rental house with kayak anglers from all over the country. Some are driving in, and I’m picking people up from the airport, too. Really looking forward to spending time with these guys.”

Williams ends by describing Bainbridge, Georgia and Seminole as a “very different environment than we’re used to fishing.” “It’s a quaint and historic town, and you can still see some of the aftermath left by Hurricane Michael. From the fishing side, it’s not about marked brushpiles and classic go-to spots. This thing is wide open for everyone.”

Registration is now open for the entire B.O.S. 2020 season. Don’t miss out on the action! Whether you’re just starting out and new to the competitive kayak fishing scene or a seasoned veteran, this tournament series is for you.

PLANO, Texas (January 29, 2020) – Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) announced today a formal sponsorship of Major League Fishing (MLF), professional bass fishing’s newest premier tournament organization, and home to Team Toyota professional anglers Mike Iaconelli, Terry Scroggins, Kevin VanDam, and Jacob Wheeler. The partnership includes Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization, as title sponsor of the Toyota Series.

The partnership further solidifies Toyota’s ongoing commitment to anglers and their families who depend on Toyota to tow boats safely to their favorite boat ramp — whether competing in tournaments, or simply pursuing their weekend passion for fishing like more than 30 million other angling Americans.

“Partnering with Major League Fishing not only allows Toyota to show continued support of our pro angling team but support the entire bass fishing community, from youth programs to the big leagues, in the pursuit of their passions,” said Matt Ozawa, engagement marketing manager, Toyota Motor North America.

Toyota’s support of Major League Fishing soundly showcases the Texas-based automotive manufacturer’s heartfelt commitment to building reliable vehicles that help people enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle. However, the company’s support of bass fishing is not limited to tournament organization sponsorship, but also includes the popular Toyota Bonus Bucks program, as well as their support of youth fishing.

As the official vehicle of MLF and FLW, Toyota will host interactive fan events at upcoming bass fishing tournaments throughout the 2020 season. From behind-the-scenes to live broadcasts, and angler interviews, tips and more, check out all the action at 2020 MLF Bass Pro Tour.

“I’m excited to welcome Toyota into the MLF family,” remarked John Acosta, Vice President, Marketing and Business Development for Major League Fishing. “Through this comprehensive, multi-year deal, Toyota continues its rich history of supporting the outdoors, now leveraging MLF’s highly rated media platforms and angler-centric tournament trails to further position Toyota as a catalyst for growth in the sport of competitive bass fishing.”

“Ten years ago, we had this crazy idea to expand the sport of competitive bass fishing,” reflected Jim Wilburn, President and CEO, Major League Fishing. “As the longest national sponsor in competitive bass fishing, it’s an honor to add Toyota to our sponsor roster. Their investment in MLF and FLW validates our goals as a fan-friendly, angler-centric league on a mission to get more people at all levels to go fishing.”

Pierce Dials In Right Area For Okeechobee Lead

Mark Pierce, of Cadiz, Ky., is leading after Day 1 of the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Southeastern Regional on Lake Okeechobee with 23 pounds, 12 ounces.

Pierce Dials In Right Area For Okeechobee Lead
[print_link]

OKEECHOBEE, Fla.— Persistence paid big dividends for Mark Pierce of Cadiz, Ky., who caught a five-bass limit of 23 pounds, 12 ounces to leads Day 1 of the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Southeastern Regional on Lake Okeechobee.

“I practiced for eight days and for seven of those days, I never saw a bass over 2 1/2 pounds,” Pierce said. “I didn’t realize how bad the grass (eradication) had affected this lake. It’s been 2012 since I’ve been here, so I spent the majority of my practice time on the north end, which turned out to be a bad idea.

“I finally changed to an entirely different area of the lake; I stuck to the main lake and ended up getting about 30 bites on my last day of practice, and didn’t hook them on purpose, in hopes that there were some good ones there. Never give up on Okeechobee.”

Targeting the mid-lake area, Pierce found his fish in about 2 feet of water amid a mixture of pencil reeds and eelgrass. He didn’t do any sight fishing, but he believes he was in an area where some fish were on unseen beds, while others were moving up to the spawning zone.

The combination of warming water and a favorable level of clarity gave Pierce a high degree of optimism for tomorrow.

“I think that we’re in for the perfect storm, because we had a cold front come through and I found about a 3/4-mile stretch that seems to have the right water color,” he said. “The clarity is not perfect, but it’s not dirty, like on the outside reeds.”

Anchoring his sack with an 8-pound, 8-ounce bass, which qualified for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Trophy Catch program, Pierce carries a 2-pound lead into Day 2.

“That big fish came off the edge of some pencil reeds, so she may have been around a bed,” he said. “I have not seen a bass on a bed unless they’re bedding a little deeper than I can see them.”

Pierce said he decided to forego the flipping technique common to Okeechobee’s shallow habitat. Instead, he caught all of his fish on moving baits.

Noting that his big bass bit around 2 p.m., Pierce said his morning was also productive.

“I was looking forward to the afternoon bite because I was the last boat, so I was excited about being the last boat,” he said. “But we caught them all throughout the day, so I feel even better about my area.”

John Duarte Jr. of Middle River, Md., is in second place with 21-12. Starting the day by targeting bed fish he’d marked in practice, Duarte put two good ones in his livewell in short order and then quickly filled his limit by fishing around the same general area. Moving to a new area enabled him to make three big culls.

“I caught most of my bed fish on a wacky-rigged black and blue Senko; and I caught one on a Texas-rigged Senko,” Duarte said. “I definitely had to work on my bed fish. I had to switch to a spinning rod for my biggest fish.”

Bryan Gunter of Ninety Six, S.C., is in third place with 20-0. With his catch buoyed by an 8-7, he caught his fish on a mix of three different baits; some reaction and pitching baits.

“I caught that big fish midday on my second pass through an area,” he said. “I actually returned to the spot and found that fish, so it paid off to return. That was the next to the last fish I caught and then, it was over.”

Pierce leads the Big Bass competition with his 8-8.

Jim Topmiller III of Orlando, Fla., leads the nonboater division with 14-10. Catching a 6-2 early in his day set the pace for success.

“We were blind-casting unweighted green pumpkin Senkos in spawning areas,” Topmiller said. “There were beds in the area but these fish weren’t on beds. We were throwing at anything sticking up out of the water — reeds, Kissimmee grass. You’d just feel a little tap and you wouldn’t know if it was a bluegill or a bass until you set up on them and they’d take off.”

Mike Caul of Petersburg, Va., leads the Big Fish competition among nonboaters with a 9-8.

Thursday’s takeoff is scheduled for 7 a.m. ET at C. Scott Driver Park, 10100 W. Hwy. 78, Okeechobee, Fla. The weigh-in will be held at the park at 3:15 p.m.

The event is being hosted by Okeechobee County.

Toyota Series Set for 2020 Season Opener on Toledo Bend Reservoir

Toyota Series Set for 2020 Season Opener
on Toledo Bend Reservoir

[print_link]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANY, La. (Jan. 29, 2020) – The Toyota Series will kick off the 2020 season this week at Toledo Bend, Jan. 30-Feb. 1, with the Toyota Series at Toledo Bend Reservoir. Hosted by the Sabine Parish Tourist Commission, the three-day tournament will feature the best regional bass-fishing pros and co-anglers casting for a top prize of at least $40,000, plus a $35,000 bonus if the winner is a qualified Phoenix Boat owner.

“Wintertime at Toledo Bend can be outstanding, but it’s typically feast or famine,” said Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit angler Darold Gleason of Many, who guides on the lake and has seven top-10 finishes on Toledo Bend in FLW competition. “We’re going to see some really big weights – 25-pound limits and the possibility of a 10-pounder or two weighed in – but it can be really hard to get a lot of bites. The key to this tournament will be capitalizing on the opportunities that you get, because you might not get many.”

Gleason said that although there are fish to be found up shallow, due to the recent cold and rainy weather he expects the tournament to be won offshore.

“I predict the tournament will be won offshore, throwing a big crankbait, a football jig or a Carolina rig,” Gleason said. “We’ve had a lot of rain, lately, so the creeks are pretty muddy. The weather is definitely giving us a few wild cards, but there are so many good anglers fishing in this event that someone is really going to catch them well.

“I think the three-day winner will probably end up right around 60 pounds,” Gleason went on to say. “But, there haven’t been many tournaments here lately and the water is low, so the fish are pretty fresh. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see it take up to 70 pounds to win. It’s going to be a very fun tournament.”

Anglers will take off from Cypress Bend Park, located at 3462 Cypress Bend Drive in Many at 7 a.m. CDT each day of competition. The weigh-ins will be held each day at Cypress Bend Park beginning at 3 p.m. All takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

In Toyota Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event, scaling up for every 20 boats over 160 and scaling down for every boat below 160. At Toledo Bend Lake, pros will fish for a top prize of at least $40,000, plus an extra $35,000 if FLW PHOENIX BONUS qualified. Co-anglers will cast for the top prize of a brand new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard (valued at more than $30,000).

The Toyota Series consists of eight divisions – Central, Eastern, Northern, Plains, Southeastern, Southern, Southwestern and Western – each holding three regular-season events, along with the International division. Anglers who fish all three qualifiers in any of the eight divisions and finish in the top 25 will qualify for the no-entry-fee Toyota Series Championship for a shot at winning $200,000 cash, plus lucrative contingency bonuses. The winning co-angler at the championship earns a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard. The 2020 Toyota Series Championship is being held Nov. 5-7 on Lake Cumberland in Burnside, Kentucky, and is hosted by the Somerset Tourist & Convention Commission and the Burnside Tourism Commission.

OVERVIEW: The bass fishing has been good the past several weeks. Spring is right around the corner! The water temperature has been dropping and will continue to make the fishing better! Fishing overall has been good this past month! Water temperature will be in the upper 40’s. Best times will be early morning, late afternoon and cloudy days. Striper fishing will continue to be good!

Largemouth Bass- Fishing for largemouth bass has been good this month. Best lures will be jerk baits, jigs, spinner baits, spoons, blade baits and crank baits. Main channel points, brush piles, rocky areas, ledges and deep docks will be the best areas to try your luck. Best depths will be from 6 to 30 feet deep. Remember to take care of the bass and release them! Bass fishing should continue to be good during the cold months into the spawn. Crawfish are a big part of their diet during the later winter. Baitfish will be constantly on the move as the water temps change.

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing will be fair. Best areas will be ledges, humps, and rocky points. Best lures will be tubes, jig & pig, hair jigs, drop shots, blade baits, floating-fly-rigs and medium running crank baits. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Cloudy days with light wind are good times to try your luck! Look for areas with rocks and ledges close to the deep water. Look for isolated rock piles near deep water. Smallmouth bass feed heavily on crawfish this time of the year. They will also suspend around schools of baitfish.

Striped Bass- Fishing will continue to improve this month. Stripers will be caught in all sections of the lake and in the large creeks. Best lures will be swim baits, buck tails, spoons, Alabama rigs and Zoom flukes fished on 1/4 to 3/4 oz. lead heads. Best time to fish is cloudy days, early morning and late afternoon. Night fishing will be fair. The best depths will be from the surface to 40 feet deep. Live bait fished on down lines and planner boards work well this month. This is also a good month to troll as the stripers can be shallow. The stripers will constantly be on the move. Look for large schools of stripers with your electronics. Some schools of stripers will surface this month. The seagulls will help you locate schools feeding stripers.

Crappie- Fishing for crappie will be fair this month. The best depths will be 10 to 20 ft. deep. Crappie will be found around deep docks, brush piles, and fallen trees. Docks with brush piles are usually good areas to hold crappie. Small live minnows and 1½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/16 to 1/8 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month. Best areas are the main creeks and the upper sections of both rivers.

TIP OF THE Month- The blue back herring has changed the feeding habits of the stripers and the largemouth bass. They stay suspended and deeper!!! Don’t fish alone during the cold months! Remember to always wear your life jacket!!! Fishing will improve as the water temperatures change! Make sure your running lights are on after dark!!! You can also hear reports about local fishing on the website: THE BASS CAST RADIO & WSLK 98.3 radio. Remember: TAKE A KID FISHING! SEE YOU ON THE LAKE!!! GOOD FISHING!

Parrish’s James Swindle Wins Phoenix Bass Fishing League Event on Lake Guntersville

Kentucky’s Fouts Wins Co-angler Division

[print_link]

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (Jan. 27, 2020) – Boater James Swindle of Parrish, Alabama, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday weighing 20 pounds, 7 ounces to top 223 boats and win the 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine at Lake Guntersville in Scottsville, Alabama. Swindle earned $6,000 for his victory.

“This is awesome,” said Swindle, who earned his first career win in Bass Fishing League competition. “My dad has fished in BFL tournaments since I can remember, and I’ve seen him bring home a couple of trophies over the years. So to get one of my own is pretty special, and I’m so proud to be bringing this home.”

Swindle said that he spent the day fishing up past the B.B. Comer Bridge, because he knew that the fishing pressure would not be as bad. One a tough day where most anglers had to scramble to catch a limit, Swindle boated more than 40 keepers throughout the day.

“I commited to a jig and a crankbait for most of the day,” Swindle said. “I had some deeper stuff and some shallow stuff, but most of my fish came from 6-foot of water. My key bait was a green-pumpkin-colored structure jig with a twin-tail grub trailer.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament as follows:

1st:       James Swindle of Parrish, Ala., five bass, 20-7, $6,000

2nd:      Will Robinson of Columbia, Tenn., five bass, 18-14, $3,000

3rd:       Jordan Wiggins of Cullman, Ala., five bass, 17-11, $1,574

3rd:       Matt Adams of Oxford, Ala., five bass, 17-11, $1,101

Rick Williams of Decatur, Alabama, brought a 7-pound, 6-ounce largemouth to the scale to win the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $1,000.

Jim Leary of Guntersville, Alabama, took home an extra $500 as the highest finishing FLW PHOENIX BONUS member. Boaters are eligible to win up to an extra $7,000 per event in each Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine tournament if all requirements are met. More information on the FLW PHOENIX BONUS contingency program can be found at PhoenixBassBoats.com.

Benjamin Fouts of Morehead, Kentucky, won the Co-angler Division and $3,000 Saturday after catching a five-bass limit weighing 17 pounds, 1 ounce.

The top 10 co-anglers finished as follows:

1st:       Benjamin Fouts of Morehead, Ky., five bass, 17-1, $3,000

8th:       Christian Greico of Tampa, Fla., four bass, 13-15, $450

9th:       Roger King of Killeen, Texas, five bass, 13-10, $400

10th:     Lynn Spears, Athens, Tenn., five bass, 13-7, $350

Chase Fleeman of Summertown, Tennessee, caught the largest bass in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing in at 8 pounds, 3 ounces. The catch earned him the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $500.

The 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine on Lake Guntersville was hosted by the Mountain Lakes Chamber of Commerce. It was the opening event of five qualifying tournaments in the Choo Choo division.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the Choo Choo based on point standings, along with the five winners of each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 16-18 Bass Fishing League Regional Championship on Lake Cherokee in Jefferson City, Tennessee, hosted by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. Boaters will compete for a $60,000 prize package, including a new 18-foot Phoenix bass boat with a 200-horsepower outboard and $10,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new 18-foot Phoenix bass boat with a 200-horsepower outboard.

The 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League presented by T-H Marine is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Phoenix Bass Fishing League All-American.

The 2020 Phoenix Bass Fishing League All-American will be held April 30 through May 2 at Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina and is hosted by Visit Anderson. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers plus tournament winners from each Phoenix Bass Fishing League division earn priority entry into the FLW Series, the pathway to the FLW Pro Circuit and ultimately the MLF Bass Pro Tour, where top pros compete with no entry fees.

Nominations Now Open For 2020 Class Of Bassmaster High School All-Americans

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — B.A.S.S. is seeking nominations for the best and brightest high school bass anglers in the country.

The Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors recognizes the 12 most outstanding high school anglers in the nation. The program is designed to reward young athletes for their performance in tournaments, leadership in their communities and involvement in conservation efforts.

Applications for the team, which is now in its sixth year, will be accepted today through Feb. 21.

To be considered, a student must be nominated by a parent, coach, teacher or other school official. Students currently enrolled in grades 10 through 12 with a current grade point average of 2.5 or higher are eligible.

Judges will select up to two student anglers in each state. These All-State Fishing Team members will become semifinalists in the selection of the 12-member Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors. Criteria include success in high school fishing tournaments and involvement in conservation efforts and other community service activities.

The anglers chosen will compete in a one-day Bassmaster High School All-American Bass Tournament to be held in conjunction with the 2020 Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks and Wildlife Department event — one of nine regular-season Bassmaster Elite Series tournaments being held this year. Elite Series anglers will serve as “coaches” for the student anglers in the one-day fishing event near Emory, Texas. The high school standouts and Elite Series coaches will be honored before the weigh-in crowd.

“The continued and growth and success our High School All-American program has had over the past six years never ceases to amaze me,” said Hank Weldon, senior manager of the Bassmaster High School program. “We are so proud to offer a platform that not only recognizes successful student athletes on their accomplishments on the water, but on their academic success and community involvement as well. We can’t wait to see what this 2020 class of anglers has in store.”

All students who compete in high school fishing events are eligible, regardless if they are affiliated with B.A.S.S. or another fishing organization.

Notices have been sent to youth fishing directors of the B.A.S.S. Nation and other organizations, as well as leaders of state high school fishing programs. Adults can nominate students by filling out an online form at Bassmaster.com/allamerican. Nominations must be submitted before midnight on Feb. 21. Please send all questions to [email protected].
