B.A.S.S. And Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation Partner On Conservation Efforts

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — B.A.S.S., the world’s largest fishing organization, and the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) formalized their partnership at a ceremony during the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses Sportsman-Legislator Summit held last week in Greensboro, Ga.

“B.A.S.S. has partnered with CSF for many years working to further sportsmen’s causes by engaging with both state legislators and Congress,” said Bruce Akin, CEO of B.A.S.S. “The memo of understanding signed last week sets forth formal goals for both organizations that enable us to champion conservation issues impacting sportfishing at both the grass roots and national level.”

As part of the partnership, B.A.S.S. Nation state conservation directors will work closely with CSF regional staff to identify and track legislation that affects aquatic resources and access to fisheries. These conservation directors can then leverage the wide reach of B.A.S.S.’s media platforms to issue calls-to-action when anglers need to voice their opinions to elected officials.

“This collaboration between B.A.S.S. and CSF serves as an ‘Early Warning System’ so that we can stay in front of issues that impact our mission and work more effectively in the political arena,” added B.A.S.S. National Conservation Director Gene Gilliland.

CSF has also committed to working alongside B.A.S.S. to educate members on how to more effectively champion sportsmen’s interests in the legislative process, and provide opportunities at the chapter level for members to engage with their respective state caucuses and members of the Governors Sportsmen’s Caucus.

“B.A.S.S. has been a valued partner with CSF for many years and continues to be a leader in advancing access and angling conservation programs across the country,” said CSF President Jeff Crane. “CSF looks forward to strengthening our partnership with B.A.S.S. and collaborating on policy efforts that are a priority at the federal and state levels which could impact America’s freshwater anglers.”

In addition to the partnership announcement, the B.A.S.S. contingent at the summit also played a large role in educating attendees about one of fishing’s most pressing issues — invasive Asian carp.

Bassmaster Elite Series angler Mark Menendez, who earned a degree in Fisheries Biology, spoke from the angler’s perspective about the economic impact the carp have had on business and tourism in western Kentucky. The carp infestation in western Kentucky’s lakes and rivers has also been linked to a downturn in tackle and boat sales, motel and restaurant use, and fishing license sales. Joined by Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency fisheries chief Frank Fiss and Kentucky Department of Wildlife and Fisheries fish chief Ron Brooks, Menendez emphasized the need to manage Asian carp to reduce impacts to sportfish populations, anglers and boaters, while also noting that fisheries with Asian carp are not “dead.”

4 Fishing Tools Every Angler Needs In Their Tackle Box

[print_link]

With so much going on both on and off the water, it’s easy to see why some anglers overlook the simple things. It happens to me and my brother all the time. We get down to the fishing spot and one of us will ask the otherdid you bring the net” or ”did you bring the pliers”. And the answer ends up being no more times than I’d like to admit.

With that being said, here are 4 fishing tools that I don’t think you should not leave home without. Let this blog serve as a friendly reminder to both you, me, and my brother on the importance of simple fishing tools.

Fishing Pliers

Fishing pliers are a versatile tool that should be in any anglers tackle box. Pliers help remove hooks, cut line, and swap out hooks on the fly. Good pliers, like the set from the Googan Squad have a split-ring function built into them. This comes in super handy.

Spray your pliers with WD-40 to prevent rust and stickiness. If they do get rusty, hit them with some steel wool and a little elbow grease. When I’m kayak fishing, I add a floating lanyard to the end of my pliers to prevent my tool from sinking to the bottom of the lake.

Measuring Tape

Fishing Tools

While many bass anglers prefer to carry digital scales, a simple measuring tape has always worked for me. Tape measures are more accessible, affordable, and long-lasting than a scale. Tape measures are also more compact and don’t require batteries.

I like to put a small round tape measure at the bottom of my tackle box. It’s so small that I usually forget that it’s with me until I catch a fish worth measuring. Then, I usually scratch my head for a second and quickly remember that my mini-fish ruler is stashed in the bottom of my box!

Most harvest regulations are measured in length so a tape measure comes in handy when determining if a fish is a keeper or not.

Having a flexible tape measure allows you to accurately measure both the length and girth measurements of your catch. There are sites online where you can enter in both length and girth measurements to get a pretty accurate weight estimate.

If you forget a tape measure and want a measurement, try this. Lay your fish next to a fishing rod, stick, or piece of line. Then, take note of where the fish stretches out to (or make a visible indicator). Once you’re home, use a tape measure to check your temporary measuring stick. This isn’t the most accurate method, but it’s better than nothing.

Camera

Fishing Tools
No pics = No fish.

Pics or it didn’t happen. It’s 2019 and if you tell a person you caught a fish and don’t immediately pull out your phone it’s kind of suspicious. Nowadays almost every angler fishes with a phone capable of high-quality pictures. Some even take it to the next level by mounting GoPro’s to their bodies.

Always keep your phone or camera handy when fishing. Even if it’s low on battery, just turn it off until you catch a fish. If you’re worried about your phone getting wet, invest in a waterproof case or toss it in a ziplock bag and use caution.

Cutting Tools

A cutting tool is a must-have when fishing. Knives, razors, clippers, and scissors all work but I personally prefer scissors. A compact pair of shears like the Googan Squad Scissors are small enough to fit in a tackle box but sturdy enough to crunch through thick braid. A good line cutting tool will have serrated edges that help it slice through individual strands of braided line much easier compared to a straight-edge blade. Save time and save your teeth with a good fishing cutting tool.

Major League Fishing names Beshears Tournament Director

Major League Fishing names Beshears
Tournament Director

[print_link]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, November 15, 2019 (Tulsa, Okla.) Major League Fishing (MLF) announced today that Aaron Beshears has accepted the position of Tournament Director for the Bass Pro Tour and MLF Cup events. Shortly after joining MLF in 2014 as a volunteer Official, Beshears was promoted to Lead Official in 2015. In late 2018 Beshears was one of the league’s first hires as MLF launched the Bass Pro Tour serving as Manager of Competition Crew Recruiting and Training throughout its inaugural year.

“Aaron did a fantastic job of recruiting, training, and deploying our battalion of League Officials,’ reflected Todd Walker, Senior Director of Operations for MLF. “With what seemed like an impossible task due to the shortened timeline, he turned into a huge success on which we will build for years to come, making him the perfect choice for this new role.”

Prior to joining MLF, Beshears retired from a 20-year career in law enforcement in 2010. His love for bass fishing, which began as a child in Oklahoma and Arkansas, led him to Major League Fishing where their conservation-friendly format appealed to him as a weekend tournament angler himself. When not at work, Aaron enjoys cooking barbeque with his wife Candice and their two children, Morghan and Taryn.

About Major League Fishing
Founded in 2011, Major League Fishing (MLF) brings the high-intensity sport of competitive bass fishing into America’s living rooms on Outdoor Channel, Discovery, CBS, CBS Sports Network, World Fishing Network, Sportsman Channel, and on-demand on MyOutdoorTV (MOTV). The Bass Pro Tour consists of eight events and a championship streamed live on www.MajorLeagueFishing.com and MOTV.

MLF recently acquired Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), which expands their portfolio to include the largest grassroots fishing organization, including the strongest five-fish format professional bass fishing tour, the FLW Pro Circuit (formerly FLW Tour), as well as the FLW Series, FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL), and high school and college tournament circuits.

What’s The Deal With The Twitch, Twitch Pause?

What’s The Deal With The Twitch, Twitch Pause?

[print_link]

Twitch, twitch, pause. I have done countless articles with pro bass anglers describing the cadence they employ for twitching baits and they all mention the same sequence of twitching their bait twice and then pausing it. Whether they are using topwater poppers, walking surface plugs, Flukes or suspending stickbaits, the pros favor the twitch, twitch, pause cadence for triggering strikes. I have also employed the same cadence for working Whopper Ploppers around cover and twitching wacky-rigged Senkos or floating worms for spawning bass. There is just something about the action created by the double twitch and pause presentation that is too tempting for bass to resist.

Although the cadence remains the same for twitching all of these baits, the intensity of the twitch and length of pause varies with each lure depending on water and weather conditions and the mood of the fish. Here’s a look at the various twitch, twitch, pause presentations you can use for the following lures.

Subtle Twitching Topwater Poppers

twitch twitch pause

These lures are usually employed during warmer weather so you can use more aggressive twitches to draw strikes. If the water is choppy, you need to make some commotion with the lure to draw a bass’ attention in the rough water so jerk the lure twice and then let it sit for about a second. Repeat the same cadence if a bass fails to hit the lure on the pause. Try the same hard twitching and pause presentation whenever you encounter bass busting shad on the surface. In calm conditions, softly twitch the popper a couple of times and pause it until the rings created by the movement of the surface plug disappear on the water. This presentation is especially effective when working the lure around visible cover.

Twitch Tips: Topwater Walking Baits

twitch twitch pause

Most of the time I just steadily walk this lure all the way to the boat, but sometimes I employ a couple of quick twitches and a lengthy pause when the lure runs next to a dock or flooded bush. I also use the double twitch and pause after a bass takes a swipe at the lure but misses it.

Twitchin’ Flukes

twitch twitch pause

Soft twitches and a longer pause (2 to 4 seconds) works best for me when presenting a Fluke to bass cruising the shallows. Jerking the lure will cause the Fluke to dart too much so I use short, soft twitches to make a more natural-looking presentation. I vary the length of my pause depending on how deep I want the lure to fall.

Jerkin’ Jerkbaits

twitch twitch pause

I mainly use these lures when the water is cold so the mood of the fish determines how hard I twitch these lures and how long I pause the stickbaits.

In the dead of winter, I might softly twitch the bait twice and let it sit for as long as a 20- to 25-count waiting for a bass to slowly swim up to the lure. When the water warms in early spring, I snap the lure twice and shorten my pause to about two to five seconds.

The CHARGE Marine Power Management Station and C-Monster GATEWAY will be available from authorized Power-Pole dealers and online at power-pole.com on November 22, 2019.

CHARGE Marine Power Management

The CHARGE is the most advanced power management system available that does the work of three devices — a traditional battery charger, a charge-on-the-run and an emergency start system–all in one compact unit. CHARGE monitors power use and puts power where it’s needed most — a feat no other battery charger system can accomplish.

CHARGE is the first bi-directional power management system that has the ability to move power from battery to battery. CHARGE manages your cranking and trolling motor batteries by taking power and moving it to where it’s needed. The CHARGE Marine Power Management Station gives you power where, how and when you need it.

JL Marine vice president Robert Shamblin: “One of the key components of having total boat control is the power you have on board. Being able to see exactly where your power levels are is essential to making decisions on the water. It allows you to know how much time you can run your trolling motor which is key to spending more time on the water and ultimately catching more fish. If you run out of power you’ll have to go home early.”

“As a marine manufacturing company, we are trying to solve problems on the water. Total boat control means managing your power consumption and how that power is distributed to all of the products that are vital for boaters throughout the day.”

JL Marine national sales manager Dan Benson: “We can’t wait to have these products on the shelves of our nearly 2,000 dealers nationwide. The CHARGE represents a major expansion of the company and like our Shallow Water Anchors, we will stand behind this product with the same level of service our customers have come to expect.”

Features:

  • Automatically moves power back and forth between cranking and trolling batteries
  • Displays battery voltage and status data on your smartphone, Power-Pole Vision, SIMRAD or Lowrance MFD unit (requires CM2 GATEWAY).
  • Complete battery maintenance – uses float mode when plugged in at home
  • Charges on the run from the alternator while the motor is running
  • Works with all battery types – lead acid, AGM, GEL, lithium or TPPL
  • Built-in emergency power transfer feature

C-Monster GATEWAY

The C-Monster GATEWAY lets you harness the power of the C-Monster 2.0 network to connect, customize and control your boat’s Power-Pole accessories like the CHARGE Marine Power Management Station using your existing devices such as the Lowrance or Simrad MFDs.

The GATEWAY allows for immediate adoption of the wireless CM2 protocol by existing devices currently using NMEA2000 technology. Keeping your boat up-to-date with the latest technology is as simple as adding your new GATEWAY-enabled devices to the network.

Shamblin: “The GATEWAY puts all of the vital information about your Power-Pole products on the devices that you are already using. It’s another way to make your time on the water a little easier.”

Features:

  • Compatible with Lowrance and Simrad MFDs and other third-party devices
  • Enables C-Monster functionality on existing accessories
  • Instantly connect new accessories with the touch of a button
  • Seamlessly integrates multiple systems to maximize efficiency
