B.A.S.S. Announces New National Tournament Series For Kayak Anglers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The popularity of kayak fishing is at an all-time high, just one of the reasons B.A.S.S., the world’s largest fishing organization, has formed a new tournament trail aimed specifically at kayaking enthusiasts.

Today, B.A.S.S. officials announced the schedule for the inaugural Huk Bassmaster B.A.S.S. Nation Kayak Series powered by TourneyX presented by Abu Garcia. The trail will feature five regular-season events in 2020 on well-known bass fisheries across the country with a championship to be held in conjunction with the 2021 Academy Outdoors + Sports Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk.

“You don’t have to look very hard these days to find a kayak in the bed of a truck or strapped to the roof of a SUV,” said Bruce Akin, CEO of B.A.S.S. “People are bass fishing from kayaks all over the world — and they’re doing it everywhere from big lakes and rivers to small creeks and ponds.

“With this new trail, we wanted to give those anglers an opportunity to show what they can do from a small craft.”

The inaugural tournament will be held in conjunction with the 50th edition of the Bassmaster Classic on Logan Martin Lake in Pell City, Ala., on March 5. Classic competition kicks-off on nearby Lake Guntersville the next morning. Other events will be held on Lake Fork in Lake Fork Marina, Texas (March 14), Chickamauga Lake in Dayton, Tenn. (May 23), the Mississippi River in La Crosse, Wis. (Aug. 15) and Clear Lake in Lakeport, Calif. (Aug. 29).

Entry fees for all of the events will be $250, and each will pay 30 places. Based on a full field of 150 kayaks, the total purse for each event will be $30,000.

“Huk is proud to work with B.A.S.S. on this exciting new tournament series designed to push the limits of kayak fishing,” said Melinda Hays, Freshwater Community Manager for Huk. “Bass fishing is an integral part of our DNA here at Huk and we endeavor to inspire anglers to explore their home waters by kayak.”

In addition to title sponsor Huk and presenting sponsor Abu Garcia, the kayak series is partnering with Old Town for the inaugural season.

“Abu Garcia is always looking for a way to connect with passionate anglers,” said Jon Schlosser, VP of marketing for Abu Garcia. “With so many people fishing for bass from kayaks now, this was the perfect partnership, allowing our brand to help serve a growing segment in the sportfishing community.”

Instead of a standard weigh-in that uses scales to measure pounds and ounces, anglers will practice “catch, photograph and release” to determine the standings.

When an angler catches a bass, he or she will photograph the fish lying on a standard-issue measuring board and submit the photo through a special mobile app provided by TourneyX. The boards will measure each fish in inches down to a quarter of an inch, and the angler with the longest five-bass limit will win.

“There will be certain criteria for the photograph to be deemed a valid photograph,” B.A.S.S. Nation Director Jon Stewart said. “It will have to show the fish’s nose touching a certain part of the board and the fish’s tail touching a line. It will also have to show the identifying mark on the board that is specific to that tournament.”

Once the photograph is submitted via the TourneyX app, a tournament director and judges will deem them legal or not and enter an official length. A real-time leaderboard will be available online during the tournament until an hour before weigh-in.

“This is pretty standard procedure for kayak tournament fishing,” Stewart said. “In fact, most tournament trails use this very same app when hosting kayak events.”

The Bassmaster B.A.S.S. Nation Kayak Series Championship will be held in conjunction with the 2021 Bassmaster Classic at a site to be determined. The top finishers from the kayak season will be recognized during Classic festivities.

“It’s just one more opportunity for bass anglers,” Stewart said. “That’s what we’re all about.”

Registration is now open online at https://ssl.palmcoastd.com/app/bass/registration/kayak/2020. Anglers must be a B.A.S.S. member to sign up.

Bassmaster Classic Reels In Award For Economic Impact

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The 2019 Bassmaster Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., has been recognized as a 2019 Champion of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism (Mid-Market Division) by Sports Destination Management.

The award honors organizations and local partners who “worked together to produce events that have made our industry a more vibrant, more exciting, more varied and more interesting place.”

Long considered the most important event in sportfishing, the Bassmaster Classic has also established itself as a huge economic boon for host communities, far exceeding economic impacts from every host city for the first weekend of March Madness, according to reports.

With a record crowd of 153,809 spectators and tourists from across the U.S. and multiple countries, the 2019 Bassmaster Classic generated an economic impact of $32.2 million for Knoxville and east Tennessee, according to a report released by the Visit Knoxville Sports Commission.

“We are so proud to have the positive impact of the Bassmaster Classic and our partnership with Visit Knoxville Sports Commission recognized,” said Bruce Akin, CEO of B.A.S.S. “It’s our hope that through media coverage of our exciting tournaments and by attracting our signature large, enthusiastic crowds to a fishery, every B.A.S.S. tournament can be an economic win for our host cities.”

According to the Visit Knoxville study, the Classic provided a direct economic impact of $17.7 million and an indirect boost in business sales of $14.5 million. The event is credited with generating $2.75 million in state and local tax revenue, including taxes on sales, restaurant purchases and lodging. Classic attendees, who traveled to Knoxville from almost every state and foreign countries as far away as Australia, Japan and Italy, paid for 29,232 room nights in local hotels.

Sports Destination Management cited these factors as well as boat ramp improvements as reasons for adding the Bassmaster Classic to this year’s list of honorees. The Visit Knoxville Sports Commission worked alongside the City of Knoxville and Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency to enlarge the competition boat ramps, leaving a lasting positive impact on the quality of life for Knox County residents while expanding the options for visitor enjoyment and additional event recruitment.

The 2020 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk and Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo will be held March 6-8 in Birmingham, Ala., and Lake Guntersville. Next year’s Bassmaster Classic will mark the 50th edition of the Classic, which has become known as the Super Bowl of Bass Fishing. B.A.S.S., alongside local hosts from the Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau and Marshall County Convention & Visitors Bureau, has already begun planning exciting new elements for the upcoming event.

Sports Destination Management is the leading publication with the largest circulation of sports event planners and tournament directors in the sports tourism market. Their 2019 Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism awards included a variety of sporting events across small, mid and large-markets.

B.A.S.S. was previously honored by the publication in 2018 as a Champion of Innovation in Sports Tourism for the Greenville, S.C. Bassmaster Classic.

Its finally Fall!.. Or is it?

Not all times of year are equal.

By Ben Hudson

[print_link]

It’s now November and the fall season is in full swing! It seemed to take a bit longer than normal this year though, and based on where you live in the country and how long the summer drags on, “fall” can be very different for anglers.

I was watching a Brian Latimar fishing video the other day and he was talking about how it was still warm were he was and how he could fish topwater later in the year than normal. This got me thinking about how just because it’s “fall” to us, doesn’t mean the fish are in full fall mode yet.

Summer stayed longer into the year for us here in Virginia, creating warmer than normal water tempatures all the way into November. This changes the way we fish since the fish will adapt to conditions more than the date on a calender. The best way I know to phrase it is, bass do not have a calender, they adapt to the conditions presented to them by mother nature herself. This is why the best anglers in the world preach over and over again to fish the conditions, not history of how or where you caught them in previous trips.

While weather and conditions are what control fish mostly, I am also a firm believer that bass do have an internal calender (based off the phases of the moon, since the brightness of the moon can tell bass how much time has passed) that they use knowing its “anytime now” to be making their move to a fall pattern.

To explain this better, lets say hypotechically the water was 70 degrees in November in a lake when it would normally be around 60 degrees. The majority of fish will stay in that late summer pattern until the water tempature gets cooler, but the internal clock they have is telling them its “almost time” even though the conditions arnt right to actually make them transition yet. So when that first cold streak of fall hits for multiple days, those fish move quick into the fall pattern they have been waiting for.

With all this in mind, this means that “fall” pattern starts at different times of year depending on where in the country you live. Up north Fall could be starting in August or September, while down in the South it may not start until late December, or somewhere inbetween like here in Virginia.

All these factor together in figuring out the timing and when to put the topwaters and finesse rods down, and when to go into full crankbait and spinnerbait fall power fishing. Which could be the key to landing a big bass on your next trip out to the lake! It might be a broken record, but always remember, fish the conditions given and not the date on the calender or your previous history.

Tight lines friends!

When And Where To Throw The Googan Squad Jigs

When And Where To Throw The Googan Squad Jigs

[print_link]

A jig has to rank as one of the most versatile lures in a bass angler’s tackle box. You can cast, pitch, flip, skip, swim, shake or crawl a jig to coax bass into biting depending on the mood of the fish.

Today’s jigs come in a variety of styles, sizes, and colors, so deciding which jig to use becomes a challenge for novice anglers in particular. Some of the most common jig styles used by the pros today include casting, flipping, swimming, finesse and football jigs.

Catch Co. and the Googan Squad are introducing a new line of Googan Squad Jigs. To start off, we’re going to break down the Googan Squad Thicc Jig and the Googan Squad Juicee Jig.

The Googan Squad Juicee Jig

Googan Squad Jig

An arkie style jig is the oldest style of bass jigs and they continue to catch plenty of fish in a variety of ways.

I usually throw my Googan Squad Juicee Jig on a 12-17 pound test. A 7-foot medium-heavy rod is my choice for casting the Juicee Jig to rocky structure.

This Juicee Jig also features a flat-bottom head and a compact body which makes it an all-purpose lure that can be skipped under docks or pitched to sparse cover. Add a flat-sided plastic trailer for increased skipping ability.

6 Juicy Juicee Jigs Flavors

This Juicee Jig also excels when dragged along rocky points, flats, bluffs and other offshore structures at depths of 5-to-20 feet.

I like to cast this along bluffs and stair-step it down ledges to catch bass at depths of 10-to-20 feet. I also crawl or hop the Juicee Jig along rocky banks in the spring when bass are feeding on crayfish in the shallows. The flat-bottom head allows me to crawl the jig over the rocks without snagging.

The Googan Squad Thicc jig

Googan Squad Jig

The Googan Squad Thicc Jig features a thick, strong Mustad hook capable of withstanding powerful hook sets and winching bass out of heavy cover. So the jig is ideal for short-line presentations to bass in shallow cover. The Thicc Jig also has a thick, U-shaped weedguard to prevent the lure from snagging in heavy cover. The jig is also designed with a streamlined head so it glides through the cover better.

A flipping jig works best for me when I am fishing shallow murky water in the spring or fall. I flip the jig on fluorocarbon line ranging in size from 17- to 25-pound test with a 7 1/2-foot flipping stick. My favorite targets for flipping a jig are flooded bushes, laydown logs, shallow brush piles and behind cables at the back ends of boat docks.

The Thicc Jig Is Available In 8 Tasty Colors

The presentation of a flipping jig is simple. Most of the time I just flip it to the target and let it fall to the bottom and watch my line closely because the bite frequently occurs on the initial fall. Delivering the jig with a quiet entry is essential for flipping to shallow bass. If the jig reaches the bottom, I might hop it or shake it a couple times to draw a bass’ attention to the lure. I let the jig sit for a second or two and then reel it back in to flip to the next target.
