SOUTH CAROLINA’S MILLER WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE WILD CARD TOURNAMENT ON KENTUCKY/BARKLEY LAKES

SOUTH CAROLINA’S MILLER WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE WILD CARD TOURNAMENT ON KENTUCKY/BARKLEY LAKES

Missouri’s Hammond Grabs Co-angler Title

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (Nov. 11, 2019) – Boater Michael Miller of Greenville, South Carolina, caught a two-day cumulative total of 10 bass weighing 31 pounds even to win the no-entry fee T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Wild Card tournament on Kentucky and Barkley lakes. For his efforts, Miller earned one of the final berths into the 2020 BFL All-American Championship.

The BFL Wild Card tournament is a last-chance shot at the All-American for BFL anglers that didn’t qualify for a Regional Championship.

“I did not see that coming,” said Miller, a former FLW College Fishing angler who competed for Furman University. “I had a pretty decent practice and I thought I might be able to catch a good one each day. Maybe two. I certainly didn’t see 15 pounds coming two days in a row.”

Miller caught his fish targeting two different places on the north end of the lake, never fishing more than 10 miles south of the dam.

“I caught them pretty much out of two areas,” Miller said. “One produced real well on Friday, and I caught all my weight on the other spot on Saturday.”

On day one, Miller said he caught five largemouth with an umbrella rig and a shaky-head rig targeting a wind-blown riprap bank with deeper water. Casting right at the bank, he fished 7 to 12 feet deep. His second area was a big windblown flat that was about 5 feet deep. He caught three largemouth and two smallmouth there on Saturday.

“On Friday at the end of the day, I saw a 4-pounder come out of the water chasing a gizzard shad on that flat. I didn’t catch it, but I decided to start there the next day,” said Miller. “It was just a big flat, probably the size of two football fields, and it had isolated stuff on it – rock piles, stake beds and some dark spots. You’d run your bait across the top or drag it through and every once in a while you’d get a quality bite.”

Miller’s key bait on the flat was a structure jig.

“I caught a small one Saturday morning, and I thought that fish probably got me to the All-American. Then, a little later, I caught a few more, including a 4-11,” says Miller. “At that point I thought I had the tournament won, so I spent the rest of the day trying to help my co-angler out. When I got in, everyone was talking about an 18-pound bag of smallmouth, and as I was loading my fish I was sure I didn’t have enough.”

The 18-pound bag of smallmouth belonged to Illinois’ Brian Futch, who weighed in a five-bass limit totaling 18 pounds, 5 ounces. Alas, it was just a bit short, as Miller had enough to earn the victory by a razor-thin 1-ounce margin.

“I put a lot of work in to make this All-American,” Miller went on to say. “I live about 30 minutes up the road from Lake Hartwell, and I made it in 2018 as a co-angler. It is without a doubt the best tournament I’ve ever been to. It’s so much fun to be there, and now I’ve got a chance to go and do really well.”

The top six boaters that qualified for the 2020 BFL All-American were:

1st:          Michael Miller, Greenville, S.C., 10 bass, 31-0, $2,483

Futch caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Boater Division Saturday, a fish weighing 5 pounds, 5 ounces, which earned him the day’s Boater Big Bass Award of $81.

Walter Hammond of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, won the Co-angler Division with a two-day cumulative of three bass weighing 11 pounds, 14 ounces.

9th:         Todd Blakeman, Chatham, Ill., three bass, 6-7, $269

10th:       Jon Dailey, Kingston, Tenn., three bass, 6-3

Hammond also caught the heaviest bass of the tournament in the Co-angler Division Saturday, a fish weighing 5 pounds, 4 ounces, which earned him the day’s Co-Angler Big Bass Award of $52.

The T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League Wild Card tournament on Kentucky and Barkley lakes was hosted by the Kentucky Lake Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2020 BFL All-American will be held April 30-May 2 at Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina, and is hosted by Visit Anderson. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

The Googan Squad Hummer Buzzbait Will Have You Buzzing Like A Bee

The Googan Squad Hummer Buzzbait Will Have You Buzzing Like A Bee

[print_link]

The Googan Squad Hummer is here! When you hear a mosquito buzzing around your head you immediately set out to seek and destroy the pest. A bass has the same impulse when the fish detects the annoying sound of a buzzbait skittering over its head.

Few thrills in fishing match the excitement of watching a buzzbait suddenly disappear when a bass engulfs it and you can enjoy plenty of exciting topwater action with the new Googan Squad Buzzbait.

How To Fish The Hummer In 8 Steps

(Scroll On Each Pic)

When To Throw The Googan Squad Hummer

Available in a 1/2-ounce model, the Googan Squad Hummer has multiple holes within each of its buzz blades to help increase the lure’s bubble trail during its retrieval. The new Hummer is available in a variety of Googan approved colors.

A buzzbait is one of the ultimate lures for fall topwater action any time of the day. Although frequently used in the morning and evening, the buzzer is just as effective during mid-day when the sun has warmed the water and baitfish become more active. The noisy lure also works well on cloudy days or in the bright sunshine whenever bass are chasing shad in the shallows.

Sneaky Hummer Hacks

I usually throw a buzzbait in stained to dirty water in the spring and fall. Bass are usually in a strike zone of 5 feet deep or less and are more apt to eat a buzzbait then. The lure also seems to draw strikes from bigger bass. If you are catching several small bass on a spinnerbait, switch to a buzzbait which might generate fewer strikes but usually produces heavier fish.

Where To Throw The Googan Squad Hummer

Some favorite targets for buzzing in the shallows are laydown logs, tops of brush piles, docks and some type of vegetation, such as milfoil or hydrilla. You can run the Googan Squad Buzzbait through holes in vegetation or bump it into any hard cover such as stickups, stumps, docks or rocks.

Retrieving the buzzbait at a steady medium speed triggers strikes most of the time. Sometimes you can trigger strikes by popping it, reeling it, killing it for a split second and then just keep reeling it. The slight hesitation in the retrieve sometime causes a strike from fish that were following the lure but were reluctant to hit it on the steady retrieve.

Strike Back To Short Striking Fish

Matching your Googan Squad Hummer with the right line will ensure more hookups. I prefer throwing braided line, like the Googan Squad Braided Line because of its abrasion resistance and low stretch, which allows me to throw the lure over dock cables and get solid hook sets on long casts. Monofilament is too stretchy and tends to give too much when setting the hook, which leads to missed fish. Some anglers stop throwing a buzzbait when the water continues to cool in the late fall. However, I keep throwing it because I remember a Bassmaster tournament I covered at Lake of the Ozarks when the top three finishers in the event threw buzzbaits for three cold and snowy days when the water temperature was in the low 50s. So you can still catch northern strain largemouth with a slow retrieve in the late fall.

MLF previously announced an expanded 2020 schedule for the FLW Series and Bass Fishing League (BFL), including reduced entry fees for both. The FLW Pro Circuit (formerly FLW Tour) will include expanded digital and linear television coverage throughout the 2020 season as a result of this acquisition, as well as offer anglers a path to the Bass Pro Tour.

ORIGINAL RELEASE:
Major League Fishing To Acquire
Fishing League Worldwide

October 10, 2019 (Tulsa, Okla.) Major League Fishing (MLF) announced today that it has reached an agreement to acquire Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization. The Letter of Intent (LOI) sets in motion the most significant brand merger in competitive bass fishing history, linking a tour and original, award-winning programming featuring the top professional anglers in the world to an extensive grassroots organization that serves tens of thousands of competitive anglers from high school and college to weekenders and tour pros.

“We’re thrilled about welcoming FLW to the MLF team,” said Jim Wilburn, President and CEO of Major League Fishing. “FLW shares our commitment to creating tournaments and opportunities centered on the success of the angler. Through this acquisition, we are better positioned to support anglers and sponsors at all levels.”

“Our business plan always included reaching all levels of grassroots fishing,” said Boyd Duckett, MLF co-founder and President of the Professional Bass Tour Anglers’ Association (PBTAA). “FLW does it best with the Tour and grassroots tournaments; their reputation in competitive bass fishing is remarkable and their culture has always been pro-angler, which makes this the perfect opportunity for both organizations. We couldn’t be more excited about FLW: their team, anglers, and sponsors.”

“This announcement marks a thrilling new chapter in FLW’s history as we join Major League Fishing and begin a new era in the sport of competitive bass fishing,” said FLW President of Operations Kathy Fennel. “As part of the Major League Fishing team, we look forward to enhancing and expanding tournament offerings to our anglers and fans. Our teams have a very similar mission and vision – to support anglers at all levels, provide the industry with unmatched opportunities, and grow the sport. The complementary strengths of our organizations make this a win for the entire sport.”

Established in 2011, MLF began as a television product and has grown into a sports league with the launch of the Bass Pro Tour in January of 2019. MLF is a partnership between the PBTAA and Outdoor Sportsman Group (OSG), a division of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment.

“As MLF continues to grow, we’re committed to find the right opportunities to extend the Outdoor Sportsman Group properties,” Outdoor Sportsman Group President and CEO, Jim Liberatore said. “Through this acquisition, MLF can leverage our extensive media reach and award-winning content production to promote competitive bass fishing at all levels.”

Each year FLW offers thousands of anglers of all skill levels across the globe the opportunity to compete for millions of dollars in prize money in five tournament circuits. Under the leadership of Irwin Jacobs, FLW expanded the top level of competition to include the industry’s first seven-figure purse.

“It has been our mission since my father, Irwin Jacobs, purchased FLW in 1996 to bring the highest quality of tournaments to anglers, sponsors and fans around the world,” said Trish Blake, FLW President of Marketing. “By joining forces with Major League Fishing, the sport of professional tournament fishing will be taken to new heights for anglers across the world at all levels.”

Major League Fishing and Fishing League Worldwide anticipate an acquisition close date of October 31, 2019.

Hollen Relies On Lipless Crankbait To Win B.A.S.S. Nation Championship At Lake Hartwell

[print_link]

ANDERSON, S.C. — Cody Hollen had a feeling that his favorite lipless crankbait would be a difference-maker during Friday’s final round of the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.

Boy, was he ever right.

The 35-year old angler from Beaverton, Ore., caught the heaviest bag of the tournament — a five-bass limit that weighed 13 pounds, 12 ounces — to vault from 10th place to the tournament title here on Lake Hartwell in the northwest corner of the Palmetto State.

Hollen finished with a three-day total of 32-12, and he reaped a wealth of spoils with the victory. Not only did he grab a berth in the 2020 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk, he also won a Skeeter/Yamaha cash award of $20,000, an invitation to fish the 2020 Bassmaster Elite Series and paid entry into the 2020 Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens division of his choice.

He was one of 59 boaters and 115 total anglers who qualified for the championship at Hartwell. Competitors hailed from 47 states and 11 foreign countries, and they competed for a total of $140,300 in prize money this week.

Hollen made the final push to jump ahead of all of them, and it was his decision to fish exclusively with a Yo-Zuri lipless crankbait in the chrome with a blue back color that paid dividends, he said. He tried other lures earlier in the tournament, but he eventually decided to forego variety for what was working best.

“I had confidence coming into today,” Hollen said. “I had five or six cane piles way down lake where the water was cleaner than it was up here. They were in those cane piles. I was setting myself up maybe 30 yards back of them and casting into them.

“The bait would hit the cane pile and the fish would hit it hard.”

Hollen was in 19th place after Day 1 with a limit that weighed 9-2, and he followed with a 9-14 limit on Day 2 to make the cut. He entered the final day in 10th place, but he trailed leader Justy Varkevisser of South Africa by only 3-5.

The win was a dream come true for Hollen, who qualified for the Championship via the B.A.S.S Nation trail in Oregon and the B.A.S.S. Nation Western Regional held on California’s Lake Shasta in May.

Now he’s locked up a spot in the Classic, which will be held at Alabama’s Lake Guntersville on March 6-8. Weigh-ins will take place in Birmingham, the city where B.A.S.S is headquartered.

It’s all a new experience for Hollen, but he’s ready for the challenge.

“I have no idea of anything about Guntersville, but I’m going to go there and give it 110 percent,” he said.

So, too, will Taylor Smith and Cam Sterritt, who finished second and third in the Championship, respectively, and also earned spots in the Classic.

Smith, a 34-year old resident of Spokane Valley, Wash., caught a three-day total of 31-7. Sterritt, a 23-year old angler who lives in Newfields, N.H., caught 31-2.

Smith qualified for the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship as the leading boater from the Idaho Nation. Like Hollen, he also fished cane piles, though he opted to throw a football-head jig most of the tournament. He was in sixth place heading into Friday, and he moved up the standings courtesy of a 10-15 limit, which was the third heaviest of the day. He caught 10 pounds Wednesday and 10-8 Thursday.

“I’m feeling a lot of emotion,” Smith said. “I’ve been watching The Bassmasters (on television) with my dad as long as I can remember. It means a ton to make the Classic. I have more unread text messages in my pocket right now than ever. My support network is incredible.”

Sterritt caught a 10-7 limit Friday, which followed the 13-8 he weighed Thursday. That haul was the second-heaviest bag of the tournament. He caught all of his bass drop shotting or skipping a Neko rig under the docks jutting from Hartwell’s shorelines.

Though only 23, Sterritt has plenty experience in B.A.S.S. events. He began fishing Junior Bassmaster events when he was 10 and was part of the first High School National Championship in 2015.

“It really taught me how to compete in these tournaments,” he said.

Stanley Beebe, who lives in San Luis Obispo, Calif., clinched the nonboater division Thursday with a two-day total of 17-13. That was best among the 56 nonboaters competing at Hartwell, and it earned him a spot in Friday’s final round against the event’s top boaters.

Beebe won a $10,000 Skeeter/Yamaha cash prize for winning that division, as well as entry into the Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens division of his choice.

Scott Perrine of Bonneau, S.C., won the $1,000 Phoenix Boats Big Bass award for landing a 6-1 largemouth Wednesday.

Visit Anderson hosted the event.

Power-Pole joins AAF’s Plastic Brigade as underwriting sponsor

[print_link]

TAMPA, FL – JL Marine Systems, Inc., makers of the original Power-Pole Shallow Water Anchor, is proud to announce that it will serve as the primary sponsor for the 4th district of the American Advertising Federation’s “Plastic Brigade” campaign.

The unspoiled beauty of nature is paramount to why we, as anglers, escape to the water.

As anglers, we understand that the conservation of those resources is essential to the enjoyment we receive. As a company built by anglers, we also understand that protecting our waters is essential to the long-term health of the marine and boating industry.

Plastic debris and trash, such as straws and single-use plastics not only harm the aesthetic of nature but can cause serious harm to fish and wildlife. By keeping them out of our marine ecosystem, we can help ensure that those ecosystems will thrive for generations to come.

“In an effort to reduce the impact of plastic pollution on our shorelines and the environment our volunteer team of advertising professionals and affiliate organizations is conducting a public service campaign to promote sustainable packaging, recycling and proper plastic disposal,” AAF Fourth District’s governor Mike Weber said. “The underwriting from Power-Pole gives us the support we needed to provide branding identity to our volunteers and fully develop our awareness campaign.”

This year’s public service initiative from the Ad Federation was a natural fit for Power-Pole’s Community Action Service Team, which coordinates J.L. Marine’s community outreach and conservation efforts while supporting charities, nonprofits and other organizations that help serve the boating and fishing communities.

“We as angler’s need to do our best to keep our waters and estuaries free from plastic,” Power-Pole national sales manager and C.A.S.T.net committee member Dan Benson said. “The goals of the AAF’s Plastic Brigade are not only to clean up the environment but to educate everyone about how plastic affects our fisheries.”

The “Plastic Brigade” initiative will include an awareness and education campaign about the harmful effects that plastic can have on marine environments, particularly in Florida and the Caribbean where the AAF’s 4th district is located. According to Plastic Free Florida, the average American throws away approximately 185 pounds of plastic per year, which accounts for 10 percent of all the waste humans generate every year. 50 percent of that plastic waste was used only once before it was thrown away. Once that plastic, including single-use shopping bags, reaches the ocean, it can take between 500 and 1,000 years to fully decompose.

The Ad Federation’s volunteer team of advertising professionals and affiliate organizations will utilize their expertise to promote an advertising campaign focused on sustainable packaging, recycling and proper plastic disposal. This message will be spread across a variety of media including broadcast, print, outdoor, radio, podcasts and social media.

AAF will also be coordinating beach cleanups through its affiliates in Florida and the Caribbean to clear them of debris. The first of those events will be held in various locations around Florida, including Bartlett Park Salt Creek Estuary in South St. Petersburg, on Nov. 9 from 9:00 a.m. until noon.

“Power-Pole employees are eager to get our hands dirty to remove as much plastic as possible but more importantly help spread the word on how long plastic takes to decompose once it gets into our environment,” Benson said.

The Googan Squad Filthy Frog Catches Slop Mondos

The Googan Squad Filthy Frog Catches Slop Mondos

[print_link]

The Googan Squad Filthy Frog is a lunker hunter ready to rip some lips! Skitter the lure over matted vegetation or clusters of lily pads and watch the water explode when a bass inhales it.

Fishing The Filthy Frog In 5 Simple Steps

A hollow-body frog ranks as one of the best topwater lures for fishing in weeds because unlike lures with exposed hooks that bog down in the slop, the lightweight, weedless frog smoothly glides over the vegetation. The Googan Squad Filthy Frog performs to perfection over the slop as its weedless design lets you drag the bait over the thickest cover and its narrow-body presents a lifelike frog profile.

The Filthy Frog Is A Fatty

The weighted Filthy Frog allows you to make long casts across the weeds to cover plenty of water. Whereas other hollow-bodied frogs tend to start filling with water that needs to be squeezed out frequently, the Filthy Frog’s body is designed to keep out water, so the lure stays balanced throughout your retrieve.

Designed to walk in similar fashion to a Zara Spook, the Filthy Frog features rubber legs that generate a lively action. While twitching the frog across the surface, you will know bass go the “Eat Me” text message on the frog’s back when the letters disappear in a frothy explosion of water. After feeling the weight of the fish on your line, the strong, ultra-sharp wide-gap double hook of the Filthy Frog will dig in for a solid hook set.

Bass blow up on a hollow-body frog when you skim it across matted vegetation with steady twitches of your rod, but bass frequently miss the bait as the fish blast through the mat. You have a better chance for a solid hook set if you skim the bait over the mat and then let it it still in the openings of the vegetation.

Fishing The Googan Squad Filthy Frog

When fishing short patches of mats or lily pads skim your frog across the weeds and continue to work it in the same fashion once it slides into open water. Constantly twitching your rod when the lure hits open water will cause the frog’s legs to kick and thrust to imitate the real thing. If a bass blows up on the frog but misses, let the lure sit for a second and then start twitching it again to trigger another strike.

Any time the frog enters open water, retrieve the lure in the walk-the-dog fashion. You can increase the walking action of a Filthy Frog by trimming one of its skirted legs shorter than the other one.

The Filthy Frog Walks The Walk

The frog’s walking ability also makes it a great topwater option for fishing strictly in open water or around other cover such as standing timber, laydown logs or boat docks. Rapidly twitching the frog close to cover imitates the commotion created by a buzz bait, but the buoyant frog has a distinct advantage over the buzzer because you can stop the frog and let it sit for a while when it reaches the cover, whereas with a buzz bait you have to keep it moving or it will sink. The frog sitting there with its legs undulating is hard for a bass to resist smashing it.

South African Varkevisser Grabs Lead At B.A.S.S. Nation Championship On Lake Hartwell

Justy Varkevisser of Johannesburg, South Africa is in first place after Day 2 of the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship with a two-day total of 22 pounds, 5 ounces.

South African Varkevisser Grabs Lead At B.A.S.S. Nation Championship On Lake Hartwell

[print_link]

ANDERSON, S.C. — Justy Varkevisser missed the cut in his eight previous trips to the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.

The South African broke the trend — with emphasis — on his ninth try.

Varkevisser caught a five-bass limit Thursday that weighed 10 pounds, 15 ounces. Coupled with his Day 1 total of 11-6, he not only made the cut, but he grabbed the lead heading into the final day of the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship on Lake Hartwell.

Varkevisser is fishing offshore and targeting spotted bass on this 56,000-acre fishery in the northwest corner of the Palmetto State. He only had six bites Thursday, but the five bass he caught were good enough to vault him to the top of the leaderboard.

“It’s been a very slow catching process for me,” Varkevisser said. “I’m trying to capitalize on the slightly bigger fish, but it’s been a bit of a nerve-wracking situation because you’re not sure you’re going to going to get your limit. The windows of opportunity come along, and you have to make sure you take advantage of them when they come.”

He’s hoping he can make the most of his chances Friday, too, now that he’s finally in position to win a B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.

“I’m very excited,” said Varkevisser “I’ve been trying to make the cut in this tournament for many years. It’s an awesome accomplishment for me.”

Varkevisser is one of 12 anglers in the field of 115 that survived the cut and will fish Friday’s final round. The three anglers with the heaviest overall totals will qualify for the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk, which is set for March 6-8 on Lake Guntersville and Birmingham in Alabama.

The overall leader on Friday also will receive an invitation to fish the 2020 Bassmaster Elite Series and paid entry into the Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens division of the angler’s choice.

The final-round group is composed of Tennessee’s Nobuyuki Terajima, second place, 21-5; Montana’s Tim Johnston, third, 21-1; Australia’s Matthew Langford, fourth, 21-1; New Hampshire’s Cam Sterritt, 20-11; Idaho’s Taylor Smith, sixth, 20-8; South Dakota’s Brock Belik, seventh, 19-12; Washington’s  Kelly Kellogg, eighth, 19-2; Portugal’s Pedro Rodrigues, ninth, 19-1; and Oregon’s Cody Hollen, 10th, 19-0.

They are joined by nonboater champion Stanley Beebe of California and Greg Alexander of Team Delaware, who finished 13th overall in the boater field. Alexander made the cut by virtue of finishing in second place among tournament anglers who qualified through the Eastern Regional.

B.A.S.S. Nation rules dictate that the top two boaters from each region make the cut if they don’t finish in the Top 10 heading into the final day of the Championship. Seven of the Top 10 making the cut qualified for the Championship via the Western Regional, two qualified in the Central Regional and one came from the Eastern Regional.

Beebe, who hails from San Luis Obispo, Calif., won the nonboater division of the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship with a two-day total of 17-13 He caught 6-13 Wednesday and 11-0 a day later.

Beebe’s 11-pound sack was the second-heaviest caught by a nonboater in the tournament. He fished Thursday with Sterritt, who caught the biggest bag of the tournament (13-8).

Beebe collected a $10,000 Skeeter/Yamaha cash award and entry into the 2020 Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens division of his choice.

“We were just on them all day long,” Beebe said. “I thought everyone would be on them with the way we were catching. I thought I had about nine pounds, so I feel pretty lucky. I made a last-minute cull that probably gave me an extra pound.”

New Mexico’s Brad Hauf finished second in the nonboater division with 17-8.

Scott Perrine, a nonboater from Bonneau, S.C., maintained the lead for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award with the 6-1 he caught Wednesday. The angler who catches the heaviest bass of the tournament will collect $1,000.

Anglers from 47 states and 11 foreign countries are competing on Lake Hartwell this week for a total of $140,300 in prize money.

Takeoff and weigh-in for the final round will be held Friday at Green Pond Landing in Anderson, S.C.

Visit Anderson is hosting.
