ZWOLLE’S FREEMAN WINS TWO-DAY T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE EVENT ON SAM RAYBURN

Deport’s Nichols Wins Co-angler Division

[print_link]

BROOKELAND, Texas (Sept. 23, 2019) – Boater Glen Freeman of Zwolle, Louisiana, brought a two-day total of 10 bass to the scale weighing 43 pounds, 13 ounces, to win the two-day T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Cowboy Division super-tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir Sunday. Freeman earned $8,211 for his efforts.

“I think the key to my win was that I stayed old-fashioned,” said Freeman, who earned his 11th career win in BFL competition. “Nowadays everyone is throwing crankbaits and Carolina rigs, and I feel like the fish hardly see Texas rigs anymore. I was up on the north end – around the Highway 147 bridge, fishing slopes and drop-offs of ridges in 15- to 20-feet-of-water.”

Freeman estimated that he caught around 25 keepers throughout the weekend – 15 on day one and 10 on day two. He targeted isolated pieces of timber and brush on the slopes with a redbug-colored, Texas-rigged Mister Twister worm with a ½-ounce Elite Tungsten weight.

“I just slowed down and bumped the timber with the heavy weight,” Freeman said. “I was able to find the little pieces of timber using my Lowrance unit, and just soak the worm in the little bitty brush. The bites were very sensitive, and my Lews rod and reel combos made a big difference in allowing me to detect those subtle bites.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Glen Freeman, Zwolle, La., 10 bass, 43-13, $6,211 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

2nd:         Eric Leger, Mamou, La., 10 bass, 35-9, $3,106

3rd:         Kevin Lasyone, Dry Prong, La., 10 bass, 34-11, $2,002

4th:         Albert Collins, Nacogdoches, Texas, 10 bass, 30-12, $1,403

5th:         Skeeter Fowler, Grand Saline, Texas, nine bass, 30-10, $1,202

6th:         Philip Crelia, Center, Texas, nine bass, 30-3, $1,352

7th:         River Lee, Nacogdoches, Texas, 10 bass, 29-9, $1,002

8th:         Ryan Pinkston, Center, Texas, 10 bass, 29-4, $1,727

9th:         Todd Castledine, Nacogdoches, Texas, 10 bass, 29-3, $1,102

10th:       Marcus Parker, Pearland, Texas, 10 bass, 28-6, $701

Pinkston caught an 8-pound, 8-ounce bass – the heaviest of the event in the Boater Division – and earned the event’s Boater Big Bass award of $825.

Deport Texas’ Lat Nichols won the Co-angler Division and $3,206 Sunday after catching a two-day total of nine bass weighing 22 pounds, 2 ounces.

The top 10 co-anglers were:

1st:          Lat Nichols, Deport, Texas, nine bass, 22-2, $3,206

2nd:         Steven Ramsey, Diberville, Miss., 10 bass, 20-5, $1,553

3rd:         Hannah Gryder, Milam, Texas, seven bass, 20-4, $1,004

4th:         Tim Woodard, Rosepine, La., 10 bass, 18-12, $701

5th:         Ty Haymon, Oakdale, La., eight bass, 18-5, $601

6th:         David Beason, Evans, La., seven bass, 18-2, $551

7th:         Bill Fussell, Thibodaux, La., seven bass, 16-8, $501

8th:         Ryan Bourque, Slidell, La., seven bass, 15-13, $451

9th:         Don Johnson, Lufkin, Texas, seven bass, 14-13, $401

10th:       Brandon Begnaud, Bacliff, Texas, six bass, 14-12, $351

Garrett Tunks of Sulphur, Louisiana, caught the largest bass in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing in at 7 pounds, 15 ounces. The catch earned him the event’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $412.

The T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Cowboy Division super-tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir was hosted by the Jasper County Development District.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 24-26 BFL Regional Championship on Grand Lake in Grove, Oklahoma. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard.

The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2020 BFL All-American will be held April 30-May 2 at Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina, and is hosted by Visit Anderson. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

5 Bass Lures You Should Be Throwing This Fall

5 Bass Lures You Should Be Throwing This Fall

[print_link]

When bass start feeding heavily on baitfish in the fall, you can catch those fish then on just about anything you throw at them.

Finding the baitfish is the first step in catching fall bass and the next step is to find the lures that best imitate the forage fish.

Here are five lures that best imitate the baitfish bass are munching on in autumn.

Spinnerbaits

Fall Bass Lures
Terminator
SUPER STAINLESS SPINNERBAIT

This blade bait is one of the best lures for triggering a reaction strike from bass feeding on shad. Try a 1/2-ounce spinnerbait with tandem willowleaf blades and match the blades to the same size of the shad that time of the year.

Swimbaits

Fall Bass Lures
Catch Co.
MIKE BUCCA BABY BULL SHAD

A shad imitator like the Bucca Baby Bull Shad produces best in clear water on lakes where bass have seen plenty of spinnerbaits throughout the fall. Try to match the hatch with the swimbait in the same size and color of the baitfish bass are eating then. You can fish this lure at different depths depending on the sink rate of the swimbait.

Crankbaits

Fall Bass Lures
Googan SQUAD BANGER

A square bill crankbait in a shad pattern or chartreuse with black back is ideal for banging into logs and stumps along flats loaded with shad. Use a smaller (2 inch) square bill, like the Googan Squad Mini Banger in early fall when bass are feeding more on threadfin shad and switch to a 3-inch square bill when bass forage on gizzard shad by late fall. A medium-diving crankbait produces in late fall when bass start moving to deeper water.

Topwater Walking Baits

Fall Bass Lures
Storm
ARASHI TOP WALKER

A walking topwater plug such as a Zara Spook is hard to beat when bass are busting baitfish on the surface in clear water. On windy days try a noisier topwater plug such as a Whopper Plopper to draw bass to the top on a choppy surface. A buzz bait is another ideal topwater to throw especially in murky shallow water. Retrieve these lures quickly throughout most of autumn but slow down your retrieve as the water temperature drops into the low 60s by late fall.

Jigs

Fall Bass Lures
GameChanger Lures
TRASHMASTER JIG

After a cold front hits, a slow-moving jig, like the Heavy Metal Football Jig can be the best lure to try for inactive bass. Swim the jig along the sides of boat docks or flip it to any shallow cover to catch lethargic bass waiting to ambush shad that swim by their hideouts. Choose a 3/8-ounce jig with a magnum-sized plastic trailer for a slow-falling combo to coax a finicky bass into biting.

ARKANSAS TECH UNIVERSITY WINS YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING TOURNAMENT ON ARKANSAS RIVER PRESENTED BY BASS PRO SHOPS

[print_link]

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Sept. 23, 2019) – The Arkansas Tech University duo of Fletcher Nutt and Dustin Reid, both of Sheridan, Arkansas, won the YETI FLW College Fishing event on the Arkansas River presented by Bass Pro Shops with a five-bass limit weighing 15 pounds, 2 ounces. The victory earned the Wonder Boys’ bass club $2,000 and a slot in the 2020 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

“We live about 30 minutes from Little Rock, so the river is pretty much our home water,” said Reid, a senior majoring in agricultural business. “It turned out to be a big advantage.”

“We locked down from Little Rock to the Tar Camp pool,” said Nutt, a sophomore majoring in natural resource management. “We had two good days of practice coming into this event and had found some fish in the backwaters.”

The duo mainly caught their fish on a trio of baits – a Carolina rig, a crankbait and a Zoom Z-Craw on a shaky-head rig – although they also added a nice keeper near the end of the day on a River2Sea Whopper Plopper.

“We probably caught around 30 fish,” Reid said. “Most came on the shaky-head worm, but we caught one good one on a crankbait and a nice 4½-pounder on the Whopper Plopper.”

“I think the key was our local knowledge,” Nutt went on to say. “We were fishing a little bit deeper than everybody else was, and some of the areas we were fishing were very tough to find in practice.”

The top 10 teams that advanced to the 2020 College Fishing National Championship are:

1st:          Arkansas Tech University – Fletcher Nutt and Dustin Reid, both of Sheridan, Arkansas, five bass, 15-2, $2,000

2nd:         East Texas Baptist University – Mason Beatty, Longview, Texas, and Jacob Keith, Jefferson, Texas, five bass, 12-7, $1,250

3rd:         Sam Houston State University – Jayce Garrison, Conroe, Texas, and Mason Hoke, Montgomery, Texas, five bass, 11-8, $1,100

4th:         Stephen F. Austin State University – Hunter Muncrief, Pineland, Texas, and River Lee, Nacogdoches, Texas, five bass, 10-7, $700

5th:         University of Central Arkansas – Nicholas Bergt, Atlanta, Texas, and Philip Nguyen, Conway, Ark., four bass, 10-7, $500

6th:         Arkansas Tech University – Blake Smith, Pine Bluff, Ark., and Ryan Mozisek, Benton, Ark., five bass, 10-5, $450

7th:         Dallas Baptist University – Reece Martin, Lindale, Texas, and Mark Harris, Conroe, Texas, five bass, 10-2

8th:         Tarleton State University – Drew Hargrove, Moody, Texas, five bass, 10-0

9th:         Northeast Texas Community College – Austin King, Hughes Springs, Texas, and Braden Jones, Pittsburg, Texas, five bass, 9-12

10th:       Northwestern State University – Maguire Parker, Stonewall, La., and Wes Rollo, Natchitoches, La., four bass, 9-9

Complete results for the entire field can be found at FLWFishing.com.

The YETI FLW College Fishing event on the Arkansas River presented by Bass Pro Shops was hosted by the North Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau. It was the third and final regular-season qualifying tournament for Southern Conference anglers. The next event for FLW College Fishing anglers will be a Western conference event – the YETI FLW College Fishing tournament on the California Delta presented by Bass Pro Shops, Sept. 27 in Bethel Island, California.

YETI FLW College Fishing teams compete in three regular-season qualifying tournaments in one of five conferences – Central, Northern, Southern, Southeastern and Western. All participants must be registered, full-time students at a college, university or community college and members of a college fishing club that is recognized by their school. The top 10 teams from each division’s three regular-season tournaments and the top 20 teams from the annual FLW College Fishing Open will advance to the 2020 FLW College Fishing National Championship, scheduled for Feb. 26-28 on the Harris Chain of Lakes in Leesburg, Florida. Additional teams will qualify for the National Championship if the field size in regular-season events exceeds 100 boats.

Australian Pro Jocumsen Scores Bassmaster Elite Series Victory On Tenkiller

[print_link]

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Relentless determination and commitment to his game plan paid off big for Carl Jocumsen, who turned in a catch of 19 pounds, 12 ounces on Championship Sunday and scored a career-defining victory at the Cherokee Casino Tahlequah Bassmaster Elite at Lake Tenkiller.

His four-day total weight of 54-15 was worth $100,000 and made a nice birthday gift for the Queensland, Australia angler, who turned 35 Sunday.

Jocumsen said his first Elite win — which is also the first by an Aussie — has been a lifelong dream.

“Since I was four years old, I’ve loved fishing and I’ve dreamed of the day I would do this,” Jocumsen said. “Today is that day. This is a lifetime of work; a lifetime of passion and loving this sport with every ounce of my body.”

Yesterday, after placing third and trailing leader Kyle Monti by 4-8, Jocumsen boldly stated that he believed he was on the fish to win. He predicted he needed five keepers to have a legitimate shot, and he blew away that expectation with a limit of 19-12 that ranked as the tournament’s heaviest single-day catch.

Jocumsen’s winning program stood out from much of the field, in that he committed his tournament to fishing offshore. Relying heavily on his electronics to break down the lake and identify the most promising spots, he targeted six different offshore drop-offs with brush and other cover.

Day 3 revealed a particularly productive piece of cover that delivered his final-round magic.

“I used my Humminbird 360, side imaging and mapping to break down this lake in two and a half days. I stayed out here from daylight until dark,” Jocumsen said. “Yesterday afternoon, I found this one tree off this island. It was one late in the day, and I caught one keeper. But I said, ‘I want to hit this early on the final day to see if they’re biting.’”

His intuition was spot-on, and Jocumsen experienced a phenomenal morning that saw him catch four quality largemouth by 8:30, including three in span of approximately seven minutes. Jocumsen would suffer through a long dry spell before completing his five-fish limit, but the 4-pound smallmouth that sealed his fate gave Bassmaster LIVE viewers a look at pure bass fishing emotion.

“I’ve waited my life to catch that fish,” said a visibly emotional Jocumsen. “I had gone three hours without a bite and I said, ‘It can’t go down this way. I have to finish it.’ When I caught that smallmouth, the weight of the world came off my shoulders.”

Adding a 5-pound largemouth late in the day increased Jocumsen’s total and gave him a 3-pound, 10-ounce margin of victory.

Jocumsen, who will marry fiancee Kayla Palaniuk in two weeks, caught all of his bass on a 3/4-ounce Molix football jig with a green pumpkin Strike King Rage Craw trailer. He made a couple of brief visits to fish the bank, mostly to let his offshore sites rest, but did all of his heavy lifting offshore.

In second, Day 2 leader Chris Zaldain of Fort Worth, Texas, switched tactics Sunday and caught a limit of 14-7 to finish with 51-5. After focusing mostly on running shallow points for smallmouth the first three days, Zaldain spent the first half of the final day throwing a 1/2-ounce Santone wobblehead jig with a green pumpkin creature bait trailer.

“I caught two 16-inch-plus largemouth in the morning, and that kind of relaxed me to go fish all new water and search out those smallmouth,” he said.

Zaldain added three smallmouth to his final bag. He caught those with a Megabass Spark Shad swimbait on a 1/8-ounce Megabass Okashira Screw Head.

Cory Johnston of Cavan, Cananda, finished third with 48-6. For the first three days, he spent most of his time working covered boat docks with jigging spoons and a Neko rig. But today’s conditions kept the fish from positioning in predictable spots, so Johnston switched to his backup pattern.

“With the cloudy skies, the fish didn’t position on the boat slips like I needed them to, so I ended up cranking rock banks with squarebills,” Johnston said. “I caught one in a boat slip on the Neko rig and the rest came on squarebills.”

In the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Race, Scott Canterbury took the lead with 761 points. Canterbury finished 19th this week, but maintained a slim advantage in the points race, which will be decided next week at the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship on Lake St. Clair.

Zaldain follows closely in second with 752, while Johnston is third with 747. Stetson Blaylock of Benton, Ark., is fourth with 741 and Drew Cook of Midway, Fla., is fifth with 733.

Cook also leads the DICK’S Sporting Goods Rookie of the Year race.

Monti’s Adjustment Puts Him On Top At Bassmaster Elite Series Event On Tenkiller

[print_link]

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — A key adjustment early on Saturday enabled Okeechobee, Florida’s Kyle Monti to stay with his offshore game and move into the lead of the Cherokee Casino Tahlequah Bassmaster Elite at Lake Tenkiller with a three-day total of 39 pounds, 11 ounces.

After placing third Thursday with 14-4, Monti slipped to fifth with 23-2 Friday. On Saturday, he added 16-9 — the event’s heaviest catch so far. His Day 3 bag included four largemouth bass and one spotted bass.

For two days, Monti fished an offshore sandbar with isolated hard spots and caught his fish on a drop-shot rig. Saturday, he shifted gears and caught most of his bass on a wobblehead jig.

“I caught one right off the bat that clued me in that the fish were still there, but I caught it on a bait that I haven’t caught a fish on all week,” Monti said. “That clued me in on how to catch them without dropping straight down to them with a drop shot.”

Monti said this proved crucial to his success, as he would have had a difficult time executing the drop-shot technique he had employed for much of Days 1 and 2.

Following cloudy, often rainy conditions Friday, Saturday brought mostly sunny skies and winds that reached a steady 20 mph.

“If I would not have changed, I wouldn’t have caught those fish, because I couldn’t drop down very well yesterday after the wind picked up, and today I couldn’t at all,” he said. “But I got that bite that clued me in on what to do, and I kept that thing in my hand and I have a lot of confidence in that bait.”

Following his revelation, Monti decided to expand his options and explore areas shallower than the 18 to 25 feet where he had caught fish the first two days. Finding a hard spot in 10 feet, he caught two keeper largemouth on the wobblehead and then added a pair of spotted bass on a similar area.

Confident he had caught enough to advance to Championship Sunday, Monti left his offshore spots and found a late-day bonus that pushed him into the lead.

“I went to a bank where I had caught a couple on topwater during practice, tied on a crankbait for the first time this week and caught my biggest one of the day — close to 4 pounds,” he said. “That’s how this lake is fishing right now. If you’re fishing the bank, it’s hit or miss and I don’t want to miss. So, I’m going to grind on that deep hole as long as I can and if I get five bites, I think I can win.”

Monti said that while he’ll focus on his offshore pattern tomorrow, he will not rule out other options. Seasonality, he said, has made his primary pattern a good call, but he realizes its finite reality. Moreover, with the lake level stabilizing after falling at a steady pace, the shallow opportunities could increase.

“I think what’s there is there, and I don’t think there are more fish coming because I think that’s a summertime spot,” he said. “I have to keep an open mind to the shallow bite because it could stabilize. That could go off, and I need to be able to go do that if I have to.”

In second place, Day 2 leader Chris Zaldain of Fort Worth, Texas, committed to a smallmouth pattern and added 11-14 to his previous two days’ weights of 11-1 and 13-15 for a total of 36-14.

Pursuing a highly mobile strategy, Zaldain threw a Megabass Spark Shad swimbait on a 1/8-ounce Megabass Okashira Screw Head and focused on what he described as an unassuming habitat feature.

“It was super-flat, ugly points with red clay and scattered rock,” Zaldain said. “When you’re running down the lake and you see an ugly point, most guys won’t stop and fish it. But when you put your trolling motor down, you’ll find little nuances on those ugly points, and that’s what the fish are relating to.

“Those spots in conjunction with the finesse swimbait I’m throwing, when they get it, they eat it so hard. That tells me it’s the right bait.”

Essential to the Okashira design are the twin props of different sizes behind the lead head. Adding an audible appeal, the props also provide lift, which allows Zaldain to keep his bait higher in the water column where fish chasing bait on windblown points are more likely to see it.

In third place, Carl Jocumsen of Queensland, Australia, turned in his best performance so far with a limit of 15-4, which gave him a 35-3 total. After dialing in a dependable pattern late on Day 2, he dragged a 3/4-ounce football jig all day.

“I literally caught all of my fish in the same areas, doing the same thing as yesterday,” Jocumsen said. “It’s very isolated casts to very specific spots. They’re positioning right on these little rock humps and brush piles that I’m finding on my Humminbird 360.

“They’re there and they bite at the right times. I just have to put away every rod tomorrow and not have anything else in my mind — and if it’s my time, it’s going to happen.”

In the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Race, Scott Canterbury regained the lead with 761 points. The Odenville, Ala., angler led the race coming into this week’s event, but slipped to third on Day 2.

Zaldain follows in second with 752 points, while Canadian Cory Johnston sits in third with 746. Stetson Blaylock of Benton, Ark., is fourth with 741 and Drew Cook of Midway, Fla., is fifth with 733.

Cook also leads the DICK’S Sporting Goods Rookie of the Year race.

Tomorrow’s final takeoff will occur at 7 a.m. CT, with the Top 10 remaining anglers leaving from Chicken Creek Ramp. Weigh-in will be held at Cherokee Casino Tahlequah in Tahlequah, Okla., at 4 p.m., with the winner earning $100,000.

VIRGINIA’S VAUGHAN WINS COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT ON ST. LAWRENCE RIVER PRESENTED BY REALTREE FISHING

Sixth-Year Costa FLW Series angler Earns First Career Victory – and $83,340

[print_link]

MASSENA, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2019) – Pro Wayne Vaughan of Chester, Virginia, caught a five-bass limit Saturday weighing 20 pounds, 11 ounces, to win the three-day Costa FLW Series on the St. Lawrence River presented by Realtree Fishing.

Vaughan’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 63 pounds, 5 ounces was enough to earn him the victory by a 1-pound, 9-ounce margin over second-place pro Scott Dobson of Clarkston, Michigan, and earn him $83,340, including a new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard. The tournament was the third and final regular-season tournament of the year for anglers competing in the Costa FLW Series Northern Division presented by Gajo Baits.

“I caught a few fish this week on a tube, but every fish that I weighed in came drop-shotting a Redbone-colored Z-Man Jerk Shadz,” said Vaughan, who earned his first career victory in FLW competition. “I fished basically from takeoff all the way down to Clayton, hitting 20 to 25 spots each day.

“The first day my numbers were not that great – I think I only caught 10 fish,” Vaughan continued. “On the second day I caught around 25, and today I only caught 10. I was fishing around the ends of points – I caught them all in 35- to 55-feet-of-water. Yesterday the current was moving really well, so it had the fish up a little higher – around 35 feet. Today, I couldn’t get them that shallow and had to go real deep. I caught one down 55 feet.”

When asked what he felt was the key to his victory, Vaughan was honest and blunt with his answer – “luck.”

“I had no keys,” Vaughan joked. “I think my key was luck. I had caught a couple of fish in practice, but the last day I caught a 6-pounder way out deep. I told myself, ‘That is definitely where the big ones live, and I’m committing myself to this.’ It was a grind – I was only getting one or two fish on each of those spots.

“It’s been a great year, and to win at the last event of the year is just a great way to end the season,” Vaughan went on to say.

The top 10 pros on the St. Lawrence River finished:

1st:          Wayne Vaughan, Chester, Va., 15 bass, 63-5, $83,340

2nd:         Scott Dobson, Clarkston, Mich., 15 bass, 61-12, $14,199

Zaldain Takes The Lead At Bassmaster Elite Series Event On Lake Tenkiller

Zaldain Takes The Lead At Bassmaster Elite Series Event On Lake Tenkiller

[print_link]

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Channeling his Southern California finesse-fishing roots, Chris Zaldain established a replicable pattern Friday and moved into the lead of the Cherokee Casino Tahlequah Bassmaster Elite at Lake Tenkiller with a two-day total of 25 pounds.

After placing 13th on Day 1 with 11-1, Zaldain, who now lives in Fort Worth, Texas, added 13-15 during Friday’s second round. His bag included four smallmouth bass — including a 3 1/2-pounder — and one spotted bass.

“I figured something out this morning; it was bang, bang, bang,” Zaldain said. “I stayed in one area until about 10 o’clock, and I learned a lot about what the fish were doing. I’d keep going back and forth on a stretch, and I learned a lot about how they move up and move down.

“After 10 o’clock, I started expanding. I got out of that area and I started looking for new stuff, and I caught two big smallmouth.”

With water levels down approximately a foot and a half since practice, many anglers have reported struggling with displaced fish. However, Zaldain said his fortune hung more on the day’s meteorological makeup. With Tropical Storm Imelda pushing clouds, rain and windy conditions across Tenkiller, he found a favorable contrast to Thursday’s hot, sunny complexion.

“It’s definitely a pattern and I don’t think the weather is affecting me much, but it is weather dependent,” Zaldain said. “If we get clouds and wind tomorrow, I can catch a big bag of brown fish (smallmouth).”

Noting his high comfort level with finessing fish into biting, Zaldain described his bait selection as a medium-finesse size. The essential element, he said, was using a bait with broad appeal.

“Growing up in California, we had all the different (species) options of fish,” Zaldain said. “Honestly, you don’t know what you’re going to catch here; you may catch a smallmouth in a brushpile or a largemouth on a sheer bluff rock wall, so bait selection is key.

“You can’t discriminate against one or the other. You have to throw something just big enough to interest a largemouth and just small enough for a smallmouth or spot. That way you have three different chances. And if you get a bite, you have to get it to the boat because bites aren’t very plentiful.”

Zaldain kept his details guarded, but he explained that figuring out precisely how fish are relating to a specific habitat feature defined his success. Having discovered more areas where fish are following the same pattern, he said he’ll follow the game plan tomorrow.

In second place, Tennessee angler Brandon Card caught 12-12 on Day 1 and followed with 11-15 Friday for a two-day mark of 24-11. He reported losing two big fish and boating five keepers. His bag included three largemouth — one that went 4-10 — and two spotted bass.

“I’m fishing one section of the mid-lake area, but kind of jumping around and fishing specific little areas,” Card said. “I had a couple of areas where I caught multiple fish, and then I’d have lulls and then catch a few more fish — bam, bam, bam — and then one at the end of the day.”

Card said he’s targeting bass that were pulled from the shoreline cover when the water fell. The fish are holding on particular fall-back spots and he’s catching them on a mix of reaction baits and slower baits.

In third place, Florida’s Drew Cook added 13-7 to the 9-14 he weighed on Day 1 for a 23-5 total. Cook mostly focused on a 60-yard area in the back of creek where fish are holding on a bluff wall with about nine feet of water.

“I caught five keepers today. I was lucky enough to catch four ‘over’ largemouth (exceeding the 16-inch minimum) within the first two hours,” he said. “Then I went looking for something different — in case I made it to Sunday — and caught a keeper spotted bass.

“If you throw anything shad imitating, you’ll catch a pile of little ones. I’ve been catching them all on a 3/8-ounce Nichols jig with a 3-inch Big Bite Baits Fighting Frog because I’m looking for the crawfish eaters, not the shad eaters.”

Coming into the day, Alabama’s Scott Canterbury led the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race with 750 points, followed by Stetson Blaylock of Arkansas with 748 and Canada’s Cory Johnston with 744. After today’s weigh-ins, Cook leads with 758, Zaldain is second with 753 and Canterbury slipped to third with 751. Blaylock sits in fourth with 745 and Johnston is fifth with 744.

Cook also leads the DICK’S Sporting Goods Rookie of the Year race.
