Sufix® line innovations help anglers land more fish, lose less

Fishing line can be the difference between landing and losing a fish of a lifetime. Sufix, a Rapala® Respected Brand, has innovated in all line categories – monofilament, fluorocarbon and braid – to prevent the dreaded one that got away.

In recent years, Sufix has revolutionized fishing line tech, from its release of 832 Advanced Superline and Nanobraid a few years back, to the unveiling last year of Advance Monofilament and Advance Fluorocarbon this year. Familiarize yourself with these innovations to ensure you’re spooling up the line the gives you the best opportunity to put the most fish in the boat, no matter the conditions or your quarry.

Sufix® Advance® Monofilament for Walleyes
For many years, Mille Lacs walleye guide Tony Roach fished reaction baits like Rapala Rippin’ Raps, X-Raps and Shadow Raps on 10-pound-test Sufix 832 Advanced braided line with a one- to two-foot leader of 10- to 12-pound-test Sufix Invisiline 100% Fluorocarbon. But in the last year, he’s “fallen in love with” 10-pound-test Sufix Advance Monofilament – especially when fishing in ultra-clear water.

“If you haven’t fished mono for a while, try the new Advance Mono,” Roach says. “There’s so many good qualities to that line – there’s no memory; there’s no coiling. It fishes more like a braid than a mono. There’s little stretch and you can feel everything with that line.”

Sufix Advance Mono is a durable, low-stretch line that combines HMPE molecules with Hyper Copolymer. The result is superior, long-lasting abrasion resistance that doesn’t make the line stiff and unmanageable.

Angling legend Al Lindner is another recent convert to Sufix Advance Mono, especially for shallow walleyes. And he’s not alone, he says.

“In the walleye world, so many guides and professional anglers I know have swung, full-tilt, back to monofilament, especially in shallow water,” Lindner says. “So they’re really going to get excited about Sufix Advance.”

Additional features of Sufix Advance Mono include enhanced castability, unrivaled knot strength and 50-percent lower stretch and UV absorption than standard monofilament.

“What’s cool about that mono when you’re fishing a jerkbait is you get a rubber-band effect – really bouncing that bait,” Roach says. “So, I go back and forth between Advance Mono and braid-to-fluoro, letting the fish tell me what they want.”

If your preferred angling method relies on spinning gear – as do most walleye tactics – you can count on Sufix Advance to put more fish in the boat, Lindner says. “On spinning gear, fluorocarbon can come off the reel like a slinky,” he explains. “Advance mono has abrasion-resistance like fluoro, but comes off the reel smooth.”

Sufix Advance Mono is available in two colors, clear and low-vis green, and nine strengths, 4-, 6-, 8-, 10-, 12-, 14-, 17-, 20- and 25-pound test.

Sufix® Advance® Fluorocarbon for Bass
Bass baits that work best fished on or near the bottom will work even better when fished on Sufix’s new Advance Fluorocarbon, says 2019 Major League Fishing World Championship winner Jacob Wheeler.

The most supple, sensitive and strong fluoro Sufix has ever engineered, Advance Fluoro features a higher density index than traditional nylon lines, a quality that helps anglers feel bottom and bites better. Getting such valuable “intel of what’s going on down there” on the bottom, Wheeler says, “can be the difference of having a bad day or having a great one.”

Wheeler appreciates also that Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon is more invisible underwater than any other fluoro line he’s fished. “Knowing that the fish aren’t seeing it is a huge thing,” he says.

Another benefit of a higher-density line like Advance Fluorocarbon is that it will convey your bait four times faster to the strikezone than will old-school nylon line.

A proprietary Gel Phase Technology process allows Sufix to maximize fluorpolymers to create a 100% fluorocarbon line that so out-performs other fluoro lines that it merits its own category. It’s extremely durable, but also extremely limp, allowing it to spool off your reel well, without line coils.

“I can put it on that spool for months, pull it out of my rod locker, make a cast with it and it comes off of there without those coils,” says Rapala Pro Seth Feider, a Bassmaster Elite Series competitor. “It really clears up some of those headaches you have with fishing straight fluorocarbon on a spinning reel.”

Advance Fluorocarbon does not achieve increased suppleness by sacrificing strength or feel. Wheeler’s confidence in Advance Fluorocarbon includes “knowing that when I pitch into that heavy cover and I hook that big one, I’m going to be able to get it in.”

Sufix® Nanobraid® for Finicky Fish
When fish of any species get finicky or spooky, throw small baits on Sufix Nanobraid. The super-sensitive micro-braid casts a mile, increases hook-up ratios, works well in the wind and doesn’t require a special knot to tie.

“It’s all about throwing small baits and getting them further distances,” Wheeler says.

It’s easier to throw tiny baits on Nanobraid – and feel bites on it – because it’s ridiculously thin. Ten-pound test Nanobraid measures only 3/500th of an inch in diameter; 2-pound test measures a mere 1/1000th of an inch. That makes for less wind resistance, which makes for better bite detection and a better hook-up ratio.

Casting into the wind with a traditional braided line often creates a huge arc that makes it all but impossible to feel your bait and detect bites. But Nanobraid’s much smaller diameter creates much less wind resistance, allowing a much tighter line between your rod tip and your bait. For best results, attach a Nanobraid main line via  uni-to-unit knot to a leader of Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon or Sufix Invisiline 100% Flurocarbon.

Made from 100 percent Dyneema fibers, Nanobraid boasts increased abrasion resistance and superior knot and shock strength. Its uniform, ultra-thin diameter delivers extreme sensitivity and long casts without sacrificing strength. Wide-angle braiding technology gives it a tight weave, resulting in a super strong, silky-smooth line.

GROVE, Okla. — Bob Downey, in his first season fishing the B.A.S.S. Opens, rode a consistent but demanding pattern to his first career victory in the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on Grand Lake.

With a final-day catch of 16 pounds, 3 ounces and a three-day total of 48-9, the Wisconsin angler earned $29,200 and a berth in the 2020 Bassmaster Classic scheduled for March 6-8 on Alabama’s Lake Guntersville.

By finishing fifth in the season points standings for the Central Open, Downey also earned an invitation to fish the 2020 Bassmaster Elite Series.

“Holy smokes, I got it done,” said Downey, who was fishing Grand for the first time. “I can’t believe it.”

Downey climbed steadily through the standings the first two days and was in second place going in Saturday’s finale.

With this catch of 16-3 Saturday, he finished just 8 ounces in front of another Wisconsin angler, Caleb Kuphall of Mukwonago, with 48-1. Kuphall’s finish also put him in the Top 5 of the season points race and earned him an invitation to the Elite Series.

Kyle Dorsett of Odenville, Ala., grabbed third place at Grand with 45-12.

Another chance for a first career win slipped away from the leader of the first two days, Kenta Kimura of Osaka, Japan.

A year ago the seven-season veteran led the pack on the Red River, fell off on the last day and placed fourth. History repeated for him Saturday as he boated three bass in the morning and could not find another keeper. With 43-4, he finished fourth.

Persistence, faith in his pattern, and some last-minute fortune got it done for Downey.

“When I got on that pattern early this week (in practice) and got that 6-pounder, I knew it was potentially a special deal,” he said. “But I didn’t know if it would hold up.”

Downey worked shallow-brush lines the mid-lake area, specifically targeting isolated willows or knots of buckbrush a foot or so deeper than the shoreline cover. He used a Texas-rigged Reactions Innovations Sweet Beaver and 3/8-ounce All-Terrain A.T. jig.

Most days he had eight to 10 bites, he said.

“I love to get up shallow and flip and pitch,” he said. “With those two rods on my deck, I felt pretty good but it was always just those five to eight bites a day.”

Less competition on the water was key on the final day and allowed the angler to slow down and pick apart cover, he said. It gave him the confidence to rely on the pattern and eventually put five bass in the boat.

Key bites in the final moments of Day 2 and Day 3 made all the difference.

On Day 2, he culled up with one that went about 3-8 and another that was a solid 4 that was tangled in the brush. It was the kind of tangle “where they always come off,” he said.

Saturday, he bagged his limit early but didn’t cull up again until minutes before the end of fishing time.

“That one gave me a half pound. How much did I win by? Was it less than 8 ounces,” he asked.

Another first-season Wisconsin angler, who also had some last-minute catches, Jay Przekurat of Stevens Point, held on to post a total of nine fish for 24-2 and the win in the co-angler division.

Przekurat, 20, studies marketing at Mid-State Technical College and said his $14,400 in winnings might go toward his schooling.

“I want to go into the fishing industry,” he said. “I can’t believe I won this.”

The final tournament of the Central Open series also sealed the point standings with invitations to fish the Elite Series going to the Top 5 anglers. That group includes Wes Logan of Springville, Ala., John Cox of Debary, Fla., Taku Ito of Chiba, Japan, and Kuphall and Downey.

Dave Redington of Winnsboro, Texas, won $750 for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass — a 6-10 lunker. Robert Paxton Jr. of Flower Mound, Texas, took the $250 prize on the co-angler side with a 5-11.

The Three Best Ways To Rig A Ribbontail Worm by MTB

The Three Best Ways To Rig A Ribbontail Worm

[print_link]

The lively tail action of the ribbon tail from the BioSpawn ExoRibbon makes it one of the most versatile plastic worms. You can swim the worm, drag or hop a BioSpawn ExoRibbon along the bottom or lift and drop it through branches of standing timber or sunken brush piles. The worm’s unique tail action also makes it ideal for night fishing because bass can hone in on the worm’s vibrating tail as it falls through the dark water.

Here are three ways you can rig the ribbon tail worm to catch either suspended bass or bottom-hugging bass.

Texas Rigging The ExoRibbon

This is the most conventional and popular way to rig the ExoRibbon will be a Texas Rig. The Texas rig consists of bullet-shaped weight which can be pegged or unpegged and a worm hook ranging in sizes from 2/0 to 6/0 depending on the length of the ribbon tail worm.

You should peg the bullet sinker with some sort of pegging device or a toothpick when you want to fish the worm in standing timber or brush piles to keep the worm from hanging up in the tree limbs. If the sinker is unpegged, when it rolls over a limb it falls fast while the worm remains on the other side of the limb which leads to hang-ups. With the sinker pegged close to the worm, both the sinker and worm fall together over the limbs to prevent the rig from hanging up in the wood.

Rigging the ExoRibbon with an unpegged sinker works best when you want the worm to fall slowly and swim through the water column to catch suspended bass. The unpegged sinker falls faster than the worm to allow the worm’s tail to move freely whereas a pegged sinker tends to inhibit the tail action of the worm.

Carolina Rig The ExoRibbon

A Carolina-rigged ExoRibbon works best when bass are foraging on baitfish close to the bottom. Drag the worm behind a 3/4- or 1-ounce egg-shaped sinker on a 2- to 3-foot leader line to get the best tail action out of the worm.

Shaky Head Fishing The ExoRibbon

A straight tail finesse worm is the standard lure for a shaky head jig, but sometimes it’s best to think outside the box even when finesse fishing. If bass ignore your Texas-rigged worm, try combining a 7-inch ribbon tail, like the BioSpawn Exoribbon and a 1/4-ounce shaky head before scaling down to a straight tail finesse worm.

Kimura Maintains Lead On Day 2 At Bassmaster Central Open On Grand Lake

GROVE, Okla. — Kenta Kimura fears only one thing as he leads the Top 12 into the final day of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees with a chance at his first-ever B.A.S.S. win — heartbreak.

“I was leading the first two days on the Red River last year. I fell off the final day and I don’t want to do that again,” he said with a shake of his head.

The final day at Bossier City in June 2018 left the angler from Osaka, Japan, in fourth place.

“I don’t need any heartbreak anymore,” he said. “I’m going for another 20 pounds tomorrow.”

Kimura shot into first place with 20 pounds, 6 ounces on Day 1, but was disappointed with his Day 2 bag, another five-fish limit that weighed 14-4. Kimura said he thought is was only “about 11.”

His two-day total of 34-10 gives him a 2-pound, 4-ounce advantage over Bob Downey, who found a couple keepers in the last minutes of the day to land in second place. The field narrows to the Top 12 pros and co-anglers for Saturday’s final round with the weigh-in set for 4 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops in Broken Arrow, Okla.

“I didn’t think I would still be in the lead,” Kimura said.

Oklahoma has been good to Kimura on a final day before. The second week of September 2014, he was in sixth place on the final Open of the season on the Arkansas River at Muskogee. His performance that day scored him his only second-place finish to date, and he was sandwiched between two of Oklahoma’s top tour veterans in Mark Tyler of Vian, and Tommy Biffle of Wagoner.

Kimura said he will stick with what’s been working for the final round and just change baits and techniques as the fish dictate. Clouds held fast over Grand Lake Friday, and mid-morning saw some steady rains.

Bag weights across the field dropped from Day 1, but the final holds more promise with fewer competitors on the water and a forecast that calls for a return to a sunny, windy day.

“I had to change it up where I fished,” Kimura said. “They just weren’t where they were yesterday, but my co-angler got them.”

Indeed, his co-angler, Adam Boyd of Humble, Texas, landed three fish for 11-5 and shot up to fourth place with the second-largest co-angler bag of the day.

“That guy is full of energy,” Boyd said. “Run and gun, 20 minutes here, 20 minutes there, non-stop.”

Downey’s confidence seemed shaken no matter what the leaderboard said.

“I caught two big ones in the last 10 minutes today. One of them was way down in a bush, and I was in up to my armpits to pull him out. Before that, I wasn’t even going to make the cut,” he said with a shake of his head.

Downey said he’s either going to have to come up with a different plan or count on the reduced number of competitors on the water.

“Maybe with fewer boats out there I’ll be able to hit more of the stuff I was patterning,” he said.

This final Central Open of the season not only offers a cash prize and a possible berth in the 2020 Bassmaster Classic, but marks the final chance to gain Angler of the Year points and make the Top 5 to qualify for an invitation to the Bassmaster Elite Series.

Springville, Ala., angler Wes Logan secured the Central Division Angler of the Year title Friday with a two-day weight of 30 pounds that has him in fifth place.

Others in the Angler of the Year running also are fishing Saturday. Taku Ito of Chiba, Japan, in third place with 31-5, and Caleb Kuphall in fourth with 31-2 have secured their Top 5 finishes and invitations to fish the Elite Series in 2020, but the lack to points to catch Logan.

“I changed up everything,” Logan said. “It was the same area just a different bait with the rain and the wind, and I caught four in about an hour then it slowed down.”

Ito had a near repeat of his Day 1 with an early flurry of fish mostly caught in the first two hours of the day.

His confidence, too, was a little bit lower heading into the final day. “I feel… maybe OK,” he said.

Co-angler Jay Przekurat held onto the lead as well but also left the weigh-in stage with a humble demeanor as he, like Downey, caught his last two fish — his biggest two fish — in the final 10 minutes.

Takeoff Saturday is 6:45 a.m. CT at Wolf Creek Park and Boat Ramp in Grove, and weigh-in begins at 4 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops in Broken Arrow.

Grove Convention & Tourism Bureau is the local host for this event.

Arriving Smallmouth Push Hogue To Win At B.A.S.S. Nation Event On Sebago

[print_link]

CASCO, Maine — All week, Laurence Hogue had been waiting for the bigger smallmouth to move into their late-summer/fall feeding areas and today, he leveraged the new arrivals to complete a tournament total of 31 pounds, 8 ounces.

It was good enough for a victory in the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional on Sebago Lake. He earned $5,000 and a spot in the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship, Nov. 6-8 on Lake Hartwell.

Hailing from Kennebunk, Maine, Hogue placed second on Day 1 with a five-bass limit that weighed 11-2 and then took the lead on Day 2 by adding a similar catch of 11-13.

Largemouth dominated his first two days’ catches. But Friday, he added three hefty smallmouth that weighed 7-15 and finished with a dominant margin of victory of almost 9 pounds.

“The smallmouth are just starting to move up,” Hogue said. “We checked some spots I’ve been checking all week and they were starting to move up. We saw some fish that were bigger than what we caught swimming around.

“I couldn’t get the largemouth today. I think there’s been a lot of pressure on them.”

Weather played a role in this week’s competition. Day 1 brought a cloudy, rainy start, followed by warm, windy conditions. Day 2 was partly cloudy and cooler, with Day 3 bringing the calm and sunny “bluebird” conditions of a post-frontal day.

Fishing was noticeably tougher Friday, but Hogue said his 30 years of fishing Lake Sebago told him to persevere.

“I was just fishing the best spots, slowing down and trying to get bites off the key areas.”

Hogue responded to the changing conditions and increased fishing pressure by targeting different scenarios. Day 1 saw him cranking rocks and wood at the mouth of a bay with a rainbow trout color Mudbug. That bait produced four of his keepers. The fifth, he caught on a drop shot with a Berkley Max Scent 45.

On Day 2, he flipped docks and shallow grass with a Zoom Brush Hog and a jig. In the final round, Hogue caught his smallmouth on a Tennessee shad-colored Super Spook and a drop-shot rig.

Hogue was the top boater for the Maine B.A.S.S. Nation state team, which finished first in the event’s team competition.

Brandon Morris of Harrisonburg, Va., finished second with 22-9. Morris placed first on Day 1 with 11-8 and moved into second on Day 2 after adding 6-1. Day 3 offered only two bass that totaled 5 pounds.

Morris caught all of his fish on a Booyah Pad Crasher frog. He targeted shallow grass and found Day 3 his toughest.”

“The lake’s been beaten up for three days — or seven days, considering practice,” Morris said. “I got two bites today and was fortunate enough to get them in the boat. I stuck with largemouth until about 12, and then I ditched that and tried to catch a keeper smallmouth but it never worked.”

Al Gambardella of North Haven, Conn., finished in third place with 21-6. After placing 15th on Day 1 with 7-12, Gambardella weighed 6-5 on Day 2 and moved into fourth, before adding 7-5 today.

“I caught my fish on a black 2.8 Keitech swimbait on a 3/16-ounce head and a spybait over shallow sand flats in 4-8 feet,” he said. “When it gets slick calm, I like to throw the swimbait and when it’s choppier, I like to throw the spybait.”

Edwin Bartlett of Casco won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award with his 8-7.

Aaron Russell of Hoschton, Ga., held commanding leads in the co-angler division for the first two days and completed his wire-to-wire win Friday with a three-day total of 22-6. His Day 1 catch of 11-4 gave him an opening-round advantage of 5-15 and buoyed is tournament.

Russell retained his lead with a Day 2 catch of 4-7 that increased his edge to 7-12. The final round yielded two plump smallmouth that weighed 6-1 and pushed him across the finish line by a margin of 8-12.

“I caught most of my fish on a 3/8-ounce Rock Crawler jig with a dirty plum Yamamoto Hula grub,” Russell said. “Today, I caught one of my fish on a drop shot with a blue crawler Robo Worm and a wacky-rigged green pumpkin magic Senko.”

Russell won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award among co-anglers with a 5-4.

Kimura Tops 20-Pound Mark, Takes Lead In Bassmaster Central Open At Grand Lake

GROVE, Okla. — Anglers called it a grind on Day 1 of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on Grand Lake. But the leaderboard told a different story, with a Top 5 within flipping distance of 20 pounds and one across that mark.

Angler Kenta Kimura of Osaka, Japan, grabbed the early lead with five healthy bass, including a set of bookends at about 4 pounds, 6 ounces each, for a total of 20-6.

“I think today was just the right kind of day to do what I was doing, cranking and flipping a worm,” he said. “The wind helped me.”

Kimura said he had enough bites to get the job done and that he covered a lot of different areas. But his bites consistently brought in bigger fish.

With possible thunderstorms overnight and less wind in the forecast for Friday, he expected a tough job ahead.

His story was similar to that of many others. They had just enough bites to get the job done, some just found better size and kept fish on the hook all the way into the boat.

“I don’t know about tomorrow,” Kimura said. “I’m going to have to work hard.”

At stake for anglers at this final Central Open of the season is not only a cash prize and a possible berth in the 2020 Bassmaster Classic but a final chance to finish in the Top 5 of the Angler of The Year Points race to qualify for an invitation to the Bassmaster Elite Series.

Currently fourth in AOY points, Taku Ito of Chiba, Japan, weighed early Thursday out of concern for one of his fish and posted the mark for everyone to beat with 16-15. He ended the day in eighth place.

“I feel very good,” Ito said with his heavy Japanese accent. “I had plenty of fish. Culled plenty of fish.”

Second-place angler Randy Pierson of Oakdale, Calif., the 2018 B.A.S.S. Nation Championship winner, who is also fishing the Bassmaster Elite Series this season, hit a solid 18-12 and landed in second place.

“My timing was just kind of perfect today and everything went perfect. I caught seven keepers, but the five I weighed came on four different baits,” he said.

Pierson said he only used about half the areas he found in practice to find his seven keepers, but he used every inch of those areas.

“Tomorrow I’m going to pretty much have five rods on the deck and fish them from shallow to down deep,” he said. “The deepest I caught fish today was 20 to 25 feet and the shallowest was, well, zero.

“I really think it’s just a timing deal. You just have to pull up to the right spot when they’re feeding.”

Pierson’s timing theory may hold, given the experience of Oklahoma’s Curt Warren, solidly in third place with 18-6.

“It sounds a lot better than it actually was,” he said. “By 9:30, I was all done. I spent the rest of the day trying to get a bite.”

From the tiny town of Leach, just about 50 miles down the road, he is familiar with Grand Lake in late summer and early fall. Warren said the fish often fire up early, but then another flurry can be expected.

“They usually hit good until about 9 o’clock and then it will stop, but they’ll fire up again about noon,” he said. “Today I just couldn’t get them to fire up again. They’re there, we could see them, they just weren’t biting.”

At the top of the co-angler standings is Jay Przekurat of Stevens Point, Wisc., with 11-8.

“I got four bites, three of them were big and I culled one,” he said. “It was one fish about every two and half hours. I caught one with like five minutes left, that was the 2-pounder I had. I just couldn’t do anything wrong.”

Friday he’s hoping for more of the same luck, even modestly so.

“It’s so tough,” he said. “I’ll be happy if I can just get a limit.”

Takeoff Friday is 6:45 a.m. CT at Wolf Creek Park and Boat Ramp, and weigh-in begins at 2:45 p.m. at the ramp. Weigh-in on Day 3 is at Bass Pro Shops in Broken Arrow, Okla., at 4 p.m.

Grove Convention & Tourism Bureau is the local host for this event.

Maine Takes B.A.S.S. Nation Team Title On Sebago Lake; Hogue Takes Individual Lead

CASCO, Maine — Drawing upon a collective knowledge of Sebago Lake, the Maine B.A.S.S. Nation team built on a Day 1 lead to win the team championship at the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional with a two-day total of 98 pounds, 13 ounces.

After posting a combined team weight of 55-14 Wednesday, the Maine anglers added 42-15 Thursday.

For their accomplishment, the team won $12,000. The second-place New York B.A.S.S. Nation team won $6,000, and the third-place Pennsylvania B.A.S.S. Nation team won $2,000.

Maine B.A.S.S. Nation team captain Keith Aucoin said his anglers made sure a team strategy complemented individual efforts. This proved particularly important, as a hot and windy Day 1 gave way to a cold front that dropped air temperatures about 15 degrees and made for tougher Day 2 conditions.

“We talked about things after Day 1 to make sure people who didn’t do well were helped out; we communicated with one another to make things work,” Aucoin said. “We were pretty spread out on the lake; we weren’t on top of one another. We stayed away from one another so we didn’t use up our fish.

“I think our win had much to do with us being familiar with the water because when it’s hard and pressured like this, fish are only in certain areas.”

Aucoin said his team benefits from a good mix of ages and experience levels, as more senior members help coach and guide younger anglers.

“We have a good mix of fishermen,” he said. “That has a lot to do with our youth program, but you do have the old-timers that are still in it too.

“I think that helps the younger anglers who are coming up. That’s what I did; when I was 10 years old, I was doing Casting Kids and that was 25 years ago. Those programs really help.”

B.A.S.S. Nation President Jon Stewart said there’s no denying the value of local knowledge, but winning requires more than that.

“It still takes a good team effort,” Stewart said. “All the teams that finished near the top had certainly worked together well to try and figure out a tough fishery.”

Maine B.A.S.S. Nation team member Laurence Hogue of Kennebunk, Maine, also leads the individual standings with 23-9. Maintaining impressive consistency, Hogue added 11-13 Thursday to the 11-12 he weighed Wednesday.

Despite his similar weights, he said his second day of competition took a different course.

“I fished a whole different section of the lake today; I didn’t even catch a fish off of what I caught them on yesterday,” Hogue said. “There were too many boats on it when I went there this morning, so I just went to a different area and I was lucky to find a few fish.

“Fishing late this afternoon helped me; I got lucky with the flights. The weather was a nicer afternoon to fish, compared to yesterday.”

Fishing rocks with grass in 4 to 5 feet of water, Hogue said he caught his fish on a mixture of jigs and worms. Essential, he said, was faith in his plan, despite the challenging conditions.

“I’m just being patient with the lake; I know how tough it is, so you just have to keep fishing and not get too worked up about not catching fish and hopefully, you’ll get four or five bites,” Hogue said. “I caught all largemouth today. I spent half the day looking for smallmouth, but I couldn’t find any.”

Brandon Morris of Harrisonburg, Va., is in second place with 17-9. Edwin Bartlett of Casco, Maine, is in third place with 15-5.

Bartlett leads is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 8-7.

Aaron Russell of Hoschton, Ga., leads the nonboater division with 16-5.

Russell leads the Phoenix Boats Big Bass competition among nonboaters with a 5-4.

Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. ET at Point Sebago. The weigh-in will be held at Point Sebago at 2:15 p.m.

MASSENA READIES FOR COSTA FLW SERIES AT THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER PRESENTED BY REALTREE FISHING

MASSENA READIES FOR COSTA FLW SERIES AT THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER PRESENTED BY REALTREE FISHING

MASSENA, N.Y. (Sept. 11, 2019) – The 2019 Costa Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Series Northern Division presented by Gajo Baits will continue their season next week at the St. Lawrence River, Sept. 19-21, with the Costa FLW Series at the St. Lawrence River presented by Realtree Fishing. Hosted by the Town of Massena, the three-day tournament will feature more than 240 of the best regional bass-fishing pros and co-anglers casting for a top prize of up to $85,000, including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard in the pro division.

“I’m really excited for this tournament – it’s my favorite smallmouth fishery in the entire country,” said FLW Tour pro A.J. Slegona of Pine Bush, New York, who has three top-10 finishes on the fishery in FLW competition. “We’re going to see a ton of big bags of smallmouth – every time you set the hook, it could a 3-pounder, it could be a 6½- or 7-pounder.”

Slegona said that anglers would catch fish on a variety of baits, but he expects that those near the top of the leaderboard will be throwing tubes and drop-shot rigs.

“We’re going to see a lot of green-pumpkin-colored goby-style baits,” Slegona said. “For a guy to do well, I think they’ll need a combination of both shallow schools and deep schools. Timing and rotation will be key – if you get in the wrong rotation, you can miss the active bite and be in trouble real quick.

“I think that it’ll take a three-day total of 68 to 72 pounds to win,” Slegona went on to say. “I definitely think we will see a few largemouth weighed in and they could play a role, but I don’t think that largemouth can win the tournament. We’re going to be catching giant smallmouth from Massena all the way to the lake. It’s going to be a lot of running, but we’re going to see some real big limits brought to the scale.”

Anglers will take off from the Massena Intake Boat Launch, located at 1415 State Hwy. 131 in Massena at 7 a.m. EDT each day of competition. The weigh-ins will be held each day at the Boat Launch beginning at 3 p.m. All takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

In Costa FLW Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event. At the St. Lawrence River, pros will fish for a top prize of up to $85,000 including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup qualified. Co-anglers will cast for a brand new Ranger Z175 boat with a 115-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard, and $5,000 if Ranger Cup qualified.

The Costa FLW Series consists of five U.S. divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western – along with the International division. Each U.S. division consists of three regular-season tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to compete in the season-ending Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2019 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 on Lake Cumberland in Burnside, Kentucky.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK READIES FOR WEEKEND OF FLW YOUTH BASS-FISHING TOURNAMENTS

YETI FLW College Fishing tournament set for Friday, Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Open tournament to follow Saturday

[print_link]

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Sept. 12, 2019) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) is set to return to central Arkansas next week, Sept. 20-21, with the YETI FLW College Fishing tournament at the Arkansas River presented by Bass Pro Shops and the Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Open at the Arkansas River. The tournaments, hosted by the North Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau, will showcase some of the top young anglers from across the region competing for cash and prizes and angling for their chance to advance to the FLW College Fishing National Championship and High School Fishing National Championship events.

“The water levels have been so extremely high this year – up until about six weeks ago – that no one has been really fishing the river,” said Nitro pro Dylan Hays of El Dorado, Arkansas, who has 14 top-10 finishes in FLW tournament competition. “So, the fish haven’t really been pressured much and they are biting really good. That’s going to make for a couple of real fun tournaments.

“I think the majority of anglers will be fishing the main-river jetties and sand bars, along with some backwaters and little creeks and stuff like that,” Hays continued. “They’re allowed to lock up one pool or down one pool, and we should see some good limits weighed in from every pool. There is probably a little more barge traffic than normal for this time of year, though, so the locks are a big risk-reward that will have to be considered.”

Hays predicted that squarebill crankbaits and flipping baits would both be strong choices, but shaky-head rigs would also play a role, especially if the current is slow. He also said that topwater baits like a buzzbait or a Zara Spook could play early in the morning.

“Twelve to 14 pounds will be strong, but I think it’ll probably take 15 to 16 pounds to win,” Hays went on to say. “It’ll mainly be a largemouth deal, but we should see some solid keeper spotted bass as well.”

The college anglers will kick off competition on Friday, Sept. 20, at 7 a.m. CDT at the North River Landing, located at 140 Riverfront Drive, in North Little Rock. The weigh-in will be held at the landing on Friday at 3 p.m. The high school anglers will then compete on Saturday, Sept. 21, launching at 7 a.m. from the park and weighing in at 3 p.m. All takeoffs and weigh-ins are free to attend and open to the public, and will be streamed live online at FLWFishing.com.

YETI FLW College Fishing teams compete in three regular-season qualifying tournaments in one of five conferences – Central, Northern, Southern, Southeastern and Western. All participants must be registered, full-time students at a college, university or community college and members of a college fishing club that is recognized by their school. The top 10 teams from each division’s three regular-season tournaments and the top 20 teams from the annual FLW College Fishing Open will advance to the 2020 FLW College Fishing National Championship, scheduled for Feb. 26-28 on the Harris Chain of Lakes in Leesburg, Florida. Additional teams will qualify for the National Championship if the field size in regular-season events exceeds 100 boats.

The Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Open tournaments are free, two-person (team) events for students in grades 7-12 and open to any FLW and Student Angler Federation-affiliated high school clubs. The top 10 percent of teams at each Open event along with the TBF High School Fishing state championships will advance to the 2020 High School Fishing National Championship. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.

Bassmaster Elite Series 2020 Schedule Puts Emphasis On Big Bass Fisheries

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — B.A.S.S. officials have announced the schedule for the 2020 Bassmaster Elite Series, a nine-tournament slate that will take the world’s best bass anglers to six states and some of the most storied fisheries in the sport’s history.

For fans who love watching professional anglers catch giant bass, the schedule is likely to be love at first sight.

“This year, we unveiled the mantra ‘Big Bass. Big Stage. Big Dreams.,’” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “We’ve certainly delivered on that in 2019 — and with the schedule we’ve put together for 2020, we’re ready to take another giant step on that path.

“Fans will have an opportunity to see our anglers compete on some of the best big-bass lakes in America.”

The season will start once again in Palatka, Fla., with an event at the St. Johns River on Feb. 6-9. Last year’s tournament on the St. Johns was one of the most exciting in B.A.S.S. history, with legendary angler Rick Clunn weighing 34 pounds, 14 ounces — a bag that included two bass over 9 pounds — on Championship Sunday to come from behind and win with 98-14.

That amazing tournament, along with an in-depth study of weekend tournament results on the fishery, earned the St. Johns River a fourth-place ranking in the Southeastern Division of Bassmaster Magazine’s annual list of Top 100 Best Bass Lakes.

It will be B.A.S.S.’s third trip to the Putnam County, Fla., fishery in five years — and the organization’s 21st visit to the St. Johns, dating back to 1973.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome back the B.A.S.S. Elite tournament to Putnam County,” said Dana C. Jones, president of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a great way to start 2020, and we are grateful that they continue to choose us as a partner.

“Tourist Development Council members carefully evaluate the return on investment of all the events they fund, and it was an easy decision to host the B.A.S.S. Elite. The economic impact into our local economy by an Elite event easily equates to over $2 million dollars, and the media value of well over $500,000 is a huge value-add.”

After visiting one big largemouth factory in Florida, the Elite Series anticipates shifting to another fishery that was recently ranked as one of the best in the country on Bassmaster Magazine’s annual Top 100 Best Bass Lakes list. That event is scheduled for Feb. 14-17, but the site won’t be announced until a later date.

The Elite Series schedule will pause during March for the Super Bowl of Bass Fishing, the 2020 Bassmaster Classic. Competition will be March 6-8 on Alabama’s Lake Guntersville (second place overall, 100 Best Bass Lakes), with daily weigh-ins and the annual Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo in Birmingham.

When Elite competition resumes, B.A.S.S. will take a trip down memory lane with a return visit to Alabama’s historic Lake Eufaula (12th place, Southeastern Division, 100 Best Bass Lakes) in Eufaula, Ala., on April 2-5.

B.A.S.S. hasn’t visited the 45,000-acre Chattahoochee River fishery since a Southern Open was held there in 2006. But the lake on the Alabama/Georgia border has been the site of 18 major B.A.S.S. events, dating back to 1968 — just the second year of the Bassmaster Tournament Trail.

With the emergence of abundant aquatic vegetation, Eufaula has evolved through the years from a place where nearly all big-money tournaments were won on the ledges into a fishery with a little bit of everything. Options should be especially diverse during the early April visit, when temperatures in the Chattahoochee Valley should be as pleasant as they’ll be all year.

“Anyone who follows professional bass fishing is familiar with Lake Eufaula’s reputation for producing big bass,” said B.A.S.S. Tournament Director Trip Weldon. “As an organization, B.A.S.S. has had some great events there through the years, and it’ll be a lot of fun going back.”

The fourth Elite Series event will be in Manning, S.C., on the Santee Cooper Lakes (ninth place overall, 100 Best Bass Lakes). The fishery has hosted 13 major B.A.S.S. events, but none since the 2009 Southern Open.

Massive lakes Marion and Moultrie, which measure 110,000 and 60,000 surface acres, respectively, have been on fire recently. A BFL event held on the Santee Cooper Lakes in March was won with five bass that weighed just over 30 pounds.

The next fishery on the schedule is known for producing some of the biggest crowds in B.A.S.S. history — the Sabine River in Orange, Texas. The fifth Elite Series event on the 2020 slate will be held at Orange on May 29-June 1 and could challenge the Elite Series fan attendance record of 36,200.

It’ll be the fourth time the Elite Series has visited the Sabine River system — and in three previous visits, the crowds totaled more than 96,000.

For earlier events at the Sabine River, catch rates were somewhat low. But the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department has worked tirelessly to create a zone that is good for both the Orange, Texas, area and anglers. Thanks to those efforts by TPWD, tournament waters for the 2020 event will be expanded to include that new five-county zone.

“The Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to partner with B.A.S.S. to bring the Bassmaster Elite Series to Orange County once again,” said Ida Schossow, president of the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce. “This tournament has brought Orange County waterways to the forefront in the fishing world. The tournament is an economic boost to our community and creates a sense of pride for our citizens.”

The site for the annual Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks & Wildlife Department will be announced at a later time. But the dates have been tentatively set for June 5-9 — just before the Elite Series makes its New York swing.

That swing will begin with another trip to smallmouth bass fishing’s holy country, the St. Lawrence River in Waddington, N.Y., on July 23-26. The fishery was named the top bass fishing destination in America on Bassmaster Magazine’s list of Top 100 Best Bass Lakes, and this year’s Elite Series event on the river was won by Georgia pro Micah Frazier with an average of more than 20 pounds of smallmouth each day.

The pros will leave Waddington and head to Plattsburg, N.Y., for an event at Lake Champlain (sixth place, Northeastern Division, 100 Best Bass Lakes) on July 30-Aug. 2. When B.A.S.S. last visited Champlain — for an Eastern Open on Aug. 2-4, 2018 — Vermont angler Bryan Labelle won with an average of almost 20 pounds of largemouth per day.

With the Bassmaster Angler of the Year title and numerous Bassmaster Classic berths hanging in the balance, the Elites will finish their season in Macomb County, Mich., at Lake St. Clair (eighth place overall, 100 Best Bass Lakes) on Aug. 20-23.

It will mark the eighth time B.A.S.S. has brought a major event to St. Clair since 1994, and the last three — in 2014, 2015 and 2017 — were all won with better than 20-pound daily averages.

“We set out to put together a schedule that would be pleasing to our anglers, our sponsors and the fans who’ve supported us for more than 50 years as an organization,” Akin said. “This is a schedule that takes us to some incredible fisheries, and every single weigh-in will be held lakeside.

“That means history will be made in some of the best settings imaginable.”
