NEW MARKET’S HUMBARD WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON CHEROKEE LAKE

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (Sept. 9, 2019) – Boater Bill Humbard of New Market, Tennessee, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mountain Division tournament on Cherokee Lake Sunday after catching a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 26 pounds, 9 ounces. For his efforts on the water, Humbard took home $6,337.

Humbard said he spent the tournament on the lower end of the lake, fishing around the Cherokee Dam, the islands and some secondary points.

“I concentrated on scattered brush before moving out to the islands and the deep points to fish big boulders and drops,” said Humbard, who earned his fourth win on Cherokee Lake in BFL competition. “I was sitting in 44 feet of water and throwing into 25 feet – most of them came from 25 to 34 feet this weekend.

“I started off the morning Saturday using a topwater bait and a crankbait, and then as the day went on I switched to a shaky-head rig,” said Humbard, “I finished off my limit with a keeper smallmouth on a brown ¼-ounce homemade jig with a [green pumpkin-colored] Zoom Super Chunk Jr. I ended up catching 14 keepers Saturday.”

Humbard said he used a Bone-colored Heddon Zara Spook Jr. and a ¾-ounce blue and chartreuse-colored Spro John Crews Little John DD Crankbait. On his shaky-head rig, he said he preferred a Watermelon Candy Red Zoom Mag Finesse Worm. On Sunday, Humbard said conditions changed drastically after the water level dropped 2 inches from Saturday. He still managed to weigh four largemouth and one spotted bass.

“I went down to my area and my topwater and crankbait fish weren’t there. I threw the shaky-head for about 45 minutes with no luck. Everything had changed – the shad, the fish position, everything – so I switched things up,” said Humbard. “I scanned around on my [Garmin] Panoptix and noticed the fish from Saturday were in the brush piles, but suspended up about a foot off of the bottom. I got my Carolina rig out, tied on a 4-foot leader, and put on a chartreuse and pumpkin [Zoom] Baby Brush Hog and finished out a limit. Those five keepers were all I caught Sunday.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Bill Humbard, New Market, Tenn., 10 bass, 26-9, $6,337

2nd:         Adam Wagner, Cookeville, Tenn., nine bass, 25-12, $2,669

5th:          Allen Neal, Whitley City, Ky., three bass, 7-15, $488

6th:          Audie Aultman, Knoxville, Tenn., three bass, 7-8, $597

7th:          David Carey, Harrodsburg, Ky., three bass, 7-7, $407

9th:          Nathan Adams, Murray, Ky., three bass, 7-0, $325

10th:        William Woods, Bowling Green, Ky., two bass, 6-5, $585

Woods caught the heaviest bass in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing in at 4 pounds, 7 ounces. The catch earned him the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $300.

The tournament was hosted by the Morristown Area Chamber of Commerce.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 17-19 BFL Regional Championship on Lake Guntersville in Guntersville, Alabama, presented by Mercury. KIEFER’S SHADOWENS WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON GRAND LAKE

KIEFER’S SHADOWENS WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON GRAND LAKE

Co-Angler Title Goes to Oklahoma City’s Bradford

GROVE, Okla. (Sept. 9, 2019) – Boater Mark Shadowens of Kiefer, Oklahoma, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Okie Division tournament on Grand Lake Sunday after catching a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 29 pounds, 3 ounces. For his finish, Shadowens pocketed $5,704.

Shadowens said he caught nine of the 10 fish he weighed on a green pumpkin-colored Zoom Magnum Trick Worm on a 5/16-ounce homemade wobblehead.

“I was fishing boat docks in 5 to 10 feet of water in the Horse Creek arm of the lake,” said Shadowens, who notched his first career win in FLW competition. “I had two areas that were about 50 yards apiece, and I just rotated back and forth between them for two days.

“I caught fish on the backs of the docks and I caught them on the front of them,” continued Shadowens. “I caught six keepers each day – about a bite every hour. It was just kind of random where they were sitting. It didn’t matter the time of day.”

Shadowens said he weighed all largemouth, including one he caught on a ½-ounce custom brown jig with a 3½-inch green pumpkin Zoom Ultra Vibe Speed Craw trailer.

My [7-foot, 2-inch medium-heavy] Falcon BuCoo [SR Casting] rod was a big part of my catch. The bite was pretty subtle and it helped me feel them and get them in the boat.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Mark Shadowens, Kiefer, Okla., 10 bass, 29-3, $5,704

2nd:         Joel Baker, Talala, Okla., 10 bass, 28-0, $2,852

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 17-19 BFL Regional Championship on Kentucky and Barkley lakes in Buchanan, Tennessee, presented by Evinrude. YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY WINS YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING NORTHERN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT ON LAKE ERIE

YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY WINS YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING NORTHERN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT ON LAKE ERIE

[print_link]

SANDUSKY, Ohio (Sept. 9, 2019) – The Youngstown State University duo of Jeffrey Jardine of Niles, Ohio, and Mike Soots of McDonald, Ohio, won the YETI FLW College Fishing event on Lake Erie with a five-bass limit weighing 22 pounds even. The victory earned the Penguins’ bass club $2,000 and a slot in the 2020 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

“It was a pretty slow morning – we only had two smallmouth bass in the livewell by noon,” said Soots, a senior majoring in criminal justice. “Around 12:15, with two hours left in the day, we made a move back to a shoal that we had fished that morning – near Kelly Island – and it was on. I reeled in a 5-pound smallmouth and as I was unhooking it, Jeff got into a 4½-pounder. We caught three good ones within 20 minutes.”

“We had talked about scrapping the shoals and moving back into Sandusky Bay, but we made the decision to have patience and just grind it out on the shoals – we knew we were going to hero or zero – and I am so glad we stuck with it,” added Jardine, a senior majoring in business administration.

The duo fished two main baits to catch the majority of their fish – Soots a Ned Rig and Jardine a drop-shot rig. Soots’ Ned rig setup was a New Money-colored Z-Man TRD, while Jardine used a green-pumpkin-sky-colored Verbinator Baits Little Donkey stickbait on his drop-shot rig.

“We ended up catching seven or eight keepers throughout the day, and if it had been a sheepshead tournament we would have won that, too,” joked Soots. “I must have caught around 20 sheepshead throughout the day.”

“Mike and I work really well together as a team, and I think that is crucial to do well in these events,” Jardine went on to say. “We had so many problems that we had to overcome – our front graph stopped working, our trolling motor wasn’t working great, and I was hobbling around with a broken foot. It’s nice to have a teammate that works with me and I am comfortable with.”

The top 10 teams that advanced to the 2020 College Fishing National Championship are:

1st:          Youngstown State University – Jeffrey Jardine, Niles, Ohio, and Mike Soots, McDonald, Ohio, five bass, 22-0, $2,000

2nd:         Ohio State University – Colton Lindsey, Raymond, Ohio, and Allex Conner, Delaware, Ohio, five bass, 20-3, $1,000

3rd:         Adrian College – Ryan Sharnas, Davison, Mich., and Chase Serafin, White Lake, Mich., five bass, 20-1, $1,150

4th:         Adrian College – Collin Torrey, Coldwater, Mich., and Jacob Emery, Brownstown, Mich., five bass, 18-3, $500

5th:         Bowling Green State University – Jamesen Simion, Saline, Mich., and Cameron Wilt, Alvada, Ohio, five bass, 16-14, $500

6th:         Youngstown State University – Cody Allen, Cortland, Ohio, and Brandon Freer, Youngstown, Ohio, five bass, 16-10, $450

7th:         Radford University – Joshua Greenburg, Montpelier, Va., and Christopher Butler, Radford, Va., five bass, 16-4

8th:         California University of Pennsylvania – Colton Higgins, Waynesburg, Pa., and Eric Freeman, Schuylkill Haven, Pa., five bass, 16-0

9th:         University of Akron – Jonathan Harter, Norton, Ohio, and Josh Kelly, Cortland, Ohio, five bass, 15-14

10th:       Adrian College – Carter Ball, Noblesville, Ind., and Micah Hutchinson Jr., Pittsford, Mich., five bass, 15-8

FLW and St. Croix Pro Cody Hahner fishes well beyond his years.

ON TOUR WITH THE FLW

FLW and St. Croix Pro Cody Hahner fishes well beyond his years.

[print_link]

Park Falls, WI (September 9, 2019) – Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be one of the youngest up-and coming competitors on a professional bass tour?

Cody Hahner did until making the grade last year. At age 26, the St. Croix Rod pro-staffer is now focused on building his reputation within the FLW Tour after an inspiring rookie season that saw him qualify for the Forest Wood Cup. For legions of high school and college bass competitors, Hahner now serves as inspiration – and proof – that hard work really can pay big rewards.

“Being one of the youngest anglers on the tour has advantages and disadvantages, but overall it’s pretty awesome,” says Hahner. “I think my age makes me more approachable to high school and college anglers, and that’s a big positive. I enjoy that connection and offering sound advice if they ask for it. It hasn’t been long since I was in that position. Knowing that helps me stay grounded. It’s important in life to not forget where you come from.”

Another plus to being fresh on the tour, maintains Hahner, is that younger anglers tend to be more flexible in their approach to bass fishing. “They’re more likely to try techniques that don’t quite match up with the track record for a particular body of water,” he explains. “That little bit of naivety sometimes helps me work up a bite I’ll have all to myself. I’m still trying to figure out just when is the perfect time to take those risks, though, because they might also result in a complete miss.”

Overall, Hahner believes that lack of experience is probably the toughest factor to overcome for young pros. “I’m still fishing tourneys on waters I’ve never seen before. Most of the veteran pros have fished every lake on our schedule several times during their careers. That provides a big advantage over newcomers. It’s hard to match that firsthand experience.”

As for surprises on tour, one thing the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point graduate didn’t see coming was just how fierce the competition can be at the professional level. “I thought I was doing just fine coming up through the ranks,” he admits, “but then I got to the pro level and I was blown away by how sharp and amazingly efficient successful veteran competitors are. The first time I got to see real pros like Bryan Thrift and David Dudley get to work, I immediately realized I had to step up my game. They have so much confidence and their approaches were incredibly fine-tuned from having spent countless hours on the water. It was really impressive – and somewhat humbling,” he laughs.

To that end, Hahner has been sharpening his game by fishing as many types of water as possible. With abundant populations of largemouth and smallmouth bass in his home state of Wisconsin, he’s able to test, practice and learn the intricacies of new strategies daily. Fishing different types of water under all kinds of weather conditions is how you learn, he emphasizes.

Case in point, Hahner’s favorite technique this summer has been stroking chatterbaits through grass instead of using a steady retrieve. “A buddy showed me how he could dismantle a school of bigmouths with this approach and I’ve been honing it to improve my grass game,” he explained. “For this technique, I like the new 7’2” heavy power, medium action Rip-N-Chatter rods that St. Croix just released at ICAST. They offer this in both their Legend Glass and Mojo Bass Glass series’,” he continues. “My favorite bait to pair it with is the Z-Man Jackhammer. I’ll throw the 3/8-oz. size in water depths of 7’ or less, and the ½- or ¾-ounce size if fishing deeper.”

Looking forward to fall, Hahner says he can’t wait for the topwater bite to get started. “I love surface fishing,” he says enthusiastically. “It lets me cover water fast and it’s so explosive. For this I really like a St. Croix 7’ medium power Avid X rod. I’ll throw a Rebel Pop-R or Yellow Magic Japanese popper most of the time, but I’ll also cut in a big Evergreen Shower Blow as a walk-the-dog bait.”

As for other young anglers with pro aspirations for the future, Hahner stresses that there’s no substitute for time spent on the water. “Don’t just target your favorite lake or honey holes; hit as many different places as you can,” he advises. “You need to develop a feel for the fish that translates into any situation. The only way to reach that point is to keep casting and trying new things.”

The tournament, set for Feb. 26-28, will showcase the top collegiate anglers from across the nation.

Buck Triumphs At Eastern Open On Oneida, Earns Berth For 2020 Bassmaster Classic

SYRACUSE, N.Y — The Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open at Oneida Lake attracted its share of local legends, and two of the biggest were in the Top 12.

But Oneida crowned a possible legend-in-the-making Saturday when Grae Buck brought his 15-pound, 6-ounce limit to the scales and clinched not only the trophy for the Oneida event, but an even bigger prize as well — a berth in the 2020 Bassmaster Classic.

His three-day winning total was 50-10.

“I’m ecstatic,” Buck said, shortly after he left the stage a winner. “I can’t believe I made my dream come true of fishing the Bassmaster Classic. I fished all the Bassmaster Eastern Opens this year just to come to Oneida Lake, because this is the lake I know the best in the country. It’s about 3 1/2 hours from my house, and I’ve made a lot of money up here.

“I remember being 7 or 8 years old. I played ice hockey, and I remember being at an ice hockey game and all I wanted to do was watch the Classic on the TV there. It’s always been my dream.”

The bite turned tough Saturday — a factor of the relentless fishing pressure, as well as wildly shifting winds (they were stiff and out of the West). Four of the final Top 12 failed to catch a limit, and only one pro weighed more than 17 pounds during the Championship round.

Buck not only had to move ahead of Day 2 leader Kameron Harbin of Abbeville, S.C., he also had to fend off local hammers like Jamie Hartman and Stanley Sypeck Jr., both of whom struggled Saturday. Hartman finished in third place, where he started the day. Harbin finished ninth.

Brisbane, Australia, pro Dean Silvester weighed the day’s heaviest bag at 17-5, which pushed him all the way from ninth to second. He fished a green pumpkin Z-Man ChatterBait all three days.

Buck hails from Harleysville in eastern Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. He won a BFL here at Oneida four weeks ago, and another several years ago. He’s got the lake wired, and he fished the same pattern that earned him last month’s win.

“I was fishing between 6 and 9 feet all tournament,” Buck said. “I was throwing a drop shot with a Cornerstone Baits Shimmy Shot. It’s been a strong pattern here for a month. When you get around the fish, they eat it.

“The only difference from how I won the BFL is that this week, I switched to the ghost color, which is white. I think before they were eating a lot of perch fry and gobies. Now they were probably focused more on shad. I also caught quite a few yesterday on a Ned Rig, which was a Shimmy Shot on a 1/10th-ounce Hyabusa Brush Easy jig.”

Buck made long casts with the Ned rig and precise drops with the drop shot into mixed areas of rock and grass.

Buck drop shotted with a Dobyns 7-foot, 3-inch Champion Extreme drop-shot rod and Ardent C-Force 3000 spinning reel. He used a size 2 Hyabusa DSR hook, 1/4- and 3/8-ounce Eco Pro Tungsten drop-shot weights, 18-pound Ardent Gliss braid in hi-vis yellow and 8-pound Seaguar Tatsu fluorocarbon as a leader.

“I think the most important thing for me was finding concentrations of fish,” Buck said. “I had three spots I found in practice and they held through the tournament.”

Sylvester, with his second-place check money, now faces a decision. He sold his house in Brisbane and used the proceeds to fund his four-event experiment in the Eastern Opens.

“I’m amazed I finished second,” Silvester said. “I had a really good practice and a really good tournament. My goal was to catch a limit each day, and I did that. But I think I probably cost myself on Day 2, when I lost three or four fish that really could have helped me.”

Silvester said his Eastern Open campaign cost him more than $35,000. He still has $8,000 left from selling his house, but needs to purchase a bass boat in order to keep competing. He said he’s going to start looking for financial sponsors immediately.

White was a key color all week, along with the ever-effective green pumpkin, and most pros fished some form of white at least part of the time, whether it was a ChatterBait, drop shot, frog, topwater or swim jig. Buck was fairly alone among the top finishers in his 100 percent reliance on plastics.

This was the final 2019 Eastern Open. The Top 5 finishers in the points standings, who are not already qualified through the Elite Series, will earn a berth in the 2020 Bassmaster Elite Series. Anglers must have fished all four Eastern Opens to qualify.

Alex Prince of Blue Ridge, Ga., won the co-angler division. Prince’s 8-4, three-fish limit today pushed his three-day total to 26-6.

“I don’t know what to say,” Prince said, with trophy in hand. “This means the world to me. I live in Georgia. It took 17 hours to get here. I’d never caught a smallie before this week. To come here and get a check like this — I didn’t expect that.”

Prince drop shotted a 4-inch Berkley Power Minnow in green pumpkin the first two days and threw a white swim jig the final day.

Harbin Hurdles Up 12 Spots With 19-15 Super Sack

Harbin Hurdles Up 12 Spots With 19-15 Super Sack

[print_link]

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Oneida Lake erupted today as winds shifted to the east, and even the moderate gusts roiled the lake and delivered 5-foot waves in the most exposed areas of this large, east-west waterbody in Central New York. The result was relatively little movement near the top of the leaderboard for the Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open on Oneida Lake.

There were exceptions, and the biggest was a massive move by Abbeville, S.C. pro Kameron Harbin, who whacked a 19-pound, 15-ounce sack and climbed all the way from 13th to take the lead with a two-day, 36-6 total.

Day 1 leader Grae Buck weighed the second-largest limit of the day at 17-8, which dropped him to second place, where he trails Harbin by a micro-thin 2 ounces. And red-hot Jamie Hartman climbed one spot to third, after weighing 17-2 today. Hartman, from nearby Newport, N.Y., now calls Russellville, Ark., home. He’s a little less than 2 pounds off the lead pace.

The Top 12 pros advance to fish tomorrow. In addition to Harbin, three other anglers climbed to make the cut today. Those anglers were Bradley Dortch (40th to 6th), Dean Silvester (15th to 9th), and Alex Wetherell (39th to 10th). The last pro in at 12th was was Jamey Caldwell, with 30-4.

The five other pros fishing tomorrow are Brian Schmitt (4th), Ben Nielsen (5th), Stanley Sypeck Jr. (7th), Andy Hribar (9th) and Kyle Welcher (11th).

Harbin’s bag was an ounce shy of 20 pounds — the best limit caught thus far. He only got five bites, he said, and he boated all five. Yesterday he had 10 bites, but only boated five.

“It was a grind out there,” Harbin said. “I should have boated 20 pounds yesterday too, but I lost half my fish.

“I found three areas in practice. I’ve caught fish on two of them, and I haven’t been to the third yet. The first day I had a limit by 9:30, then laid off them. I fished that area some, but fished my second spot most of today. The wind is supposed to shift to the west tomorrow, which shouldn’t affect my third spot.”

Harbin’s here to make the Elite Series, but he’s too far back in the points to qualify this year. Although a win would put him into the 2020 Bassmaster Classic, more than a consolation for missing the Elites.

“I can’t say much about what I’m doing, other than I’m fishing smallmouth,” Harbin said. “Hopefully I’ll be telling everybody everything tomorrow.”

Second-place Buck weighed about the same as he did on Day 1, 17-8, and he sits in strong position at 2 ounces behind Harbin. He again weighed all smallmouth.

“My starting spot had people on it for two days,” Buck said. “I didn’t catch any fish there today, so I had move around. But I couldn’t fish as much water as I wanted to because of the weather. I had to slow down and fish the weather. There just weren’t that many spots where you could roll up and fish. I’m hoping to fish that starting spot tomorrow with only 11 other (competitors) out there.

“I fished pretty much the same way I did yesterday. I was drop shotting a Cornerstone Baits Shimmy Shot on a Hayabusa DSR hook, but I caught a few today Ned-rigging the Shimmy Shot on a 1/10th-ounce jighead.”

Hartman, who won the most recent Elite Series at Cayuga, and two of the last three Elites, keeps on rolling and didn’t disappoint his fans today when he climbed one spot into third on his home lake. A big largemouth anchored Hartman’s bag today.

About the wind, Hartman said: “You need wind on this lake for them to bite, but not an east wind. An east wind here is deadly. I’ve got a boat full of water and a whole ton of stuff to dry out. It was okay for a little bit this morning, but then it got brutal.”

Hartman noted that he caught fish “periodically, all day long,” and his largemouth wasn’t by accident — he went fishing for some.

About tomorrow, and the wind’s predicted 180-degree shift to the west, Hartman said: “As long as the wind isn’t cranking, it should be okay. If it’s anything other than an east wind, I’ll take it. I was able to hold on stuff today — I wasn’t dragging — but again, it was brutal. I’m still calm. I feel no pressure. I’m just taking things one bite at a time.”

Dortch, of Atmore, Ala., is the Phoenix Boats Big Bass leader with a 6-1 largemouth. Dortch said he caught the cow on his own Jenco Fishing Trapline Rip-Knocker, which is a line-through rattlebait that debuted at the most recent ICAST industry tradeshow. “You thread your line through the bait, then tie on your treble,” Dortch said. “Your bait slides up the line when you hook up, which makes it much harder for the fish to throw the bait.”

Alex Prince of Blue Ridge, Ga. leads the co-angler division with a two-day total of 18-2. Prince weighed three fish for 7-9 today, which moved him up from 4th into the lead spot.

The final weigh-in on Saturday is at 3:30 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops in Auburn, N.Y., near the north tip of Owasco Lake.

The event is hosted by Visit Syracuse and Onondaga County Parks.
