Buck Bags 17-12 And Leads Day 1 at Bassmaster Eastern Open On Oneida Lake

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Smallmouth bass ruled a slick-calm day at the Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open on Oneida Lake, and Day 1 leader Grae Buck of Harleyville, Pa., bagged 17 pounds, 12 ounces of brown bass to establish the lead pace.

He holds a 4-ounce advantage over second-place Ben Nielsen of Lowell, Mich., and Patrick Walters of Summerville, S.C., both of whom weighed five-fish limits for 17-8. Walters actually anchored his bag with a largemouth, which was the only green bass caught by the Top 3.

A strong storm front swept through the area mid-week, which colored the water, and overcast conditions gave way to sun and slick-calm conditions most of the day. The famous schools of Oneida smallmouth failed to materialize, and several of the day’s top limits were caught junk fishing, while several others came through slow and meticulous finesse fishing.

Only 12 pros will earn the right to fish Day 3, and such tough conditions should paint a backdrop full of drama during Friday’s second round, as the junk fishermen battle the finesse fishermen, again under high, clear skies and light winds.

Buck has only fished one previous B.A.S.S. event at Oneida, an Open in 2013 that produced a 16th-place finish. But fans who follow Oneida events closely will no doubt recognize his name because he’s won two BFLs here, the most recent of which was four short weeks ago.

Buck has a lot of Oneida history, which he said helped him after missing more than a day of practice due to his cousin’s wedding. Overall, Buck described his practice as “tough.”

“In practice I checked two main areas I knew — one had them, one didn’t — so I fished that one today and hit them hard,” Buck said. “There were a few other boats in there, but I was the only one who caught them, so I hope I can fish there tomorrow.

“I’ve spent a lot of time here, and I’m just sort of out there picking at them. The lake has mixed rock and grass, which I love, and I just hope I can keep catching them.”

Buck caught most of his weight during a morning flurry, but added a 4-plus-pounder around 1:30 p.m., which he caught in deeper water. His goal is to make the 2020 Bassmaster Classic, he said, and a win here would put him in.

“Overall, I’m very happy with how the day went,” he said. “I drop shotted a Cornerstone Baits Shimmy Shot, which is what I won the BFL on.”

Nielsen made the trek from Michigan and things started slowly for him this morning, he said. But he eventually moved into one patch of water that produced four of the five smallmouth he weighed. With a fairly decent sack of fish, he decided against going to his remaining two areas, in anticipation of Friday.

There were a few other boats in his primary area, but given his competitive position, Nielsen hopes he’ll have some room to move around more there tomorrow, in addition to fishing his two other spots held in reserve.

He noted he’s fishing a moving bait and he’s “fairly optimistic about tomorrow.”

Walters, a Bassmaster Elite Series pro, likewise mentioned the slow nature of the fishing overall, and estimated he boated just one fish per hour. He culled only four times on his way to 17-8, and each time he replaced a largemouth with a smallmouth.

“I fished half-half,” Walters said. “I fished half the day on my practice water and half the day on new water. I have 14 rods on my deck — seven casting, seven spinning — and I’m junk fishing. You just have to run around and work hard and hope to get lucky.

“I’m going to do the same thing tomorrow,” Walters added. “I feel good about it. Sometimes you cull 10 times and things don’t work out. Sometimes you cull five times and they do work out. Today it worked out.”

Kyle Welcher (Opelika, Ala.) and Chris Kingree (Inverness, Fla.) tied for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the Day with a 4-13.

Japanese angler Dai Kitajima leads the co-angler division with a three-fish limit that weighed 11-14. He doesn’t speak English, but his pro Trevor Fitzgerald did note that Kitajima is a “remarkably patient and skilled finesse angler, and he spent the day dropshotting.”

Also notable is that Elite Series pro Jamie Hartman, a native of nearby Baldwinsville, N.Y., continues his roll and currently sits in fourth with 17-6. He has won two of the past three Elite events (Cayuga Lake and Lake Guntersville).

“I fished very settled today,” Hartman said. “I caught probably 25 bass, and I never felt any pressure out there. It was a great day.”

The tournament resumes Friday with takeoff at 6:30 a.m. ET from Oneida Shores Park. The Friday weigh-in begins there at 2:30 p.m. The final weigh-in on Saturday is at 3:30 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in Auburn, N.Y., near the north tip of Owasco Lake.

The event is hosted by Visit Syracuse and Onondaga County Parks.

Bassmaster Elite Series Event Moved From Fort Gibson To Lake Tenkiller

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — B.A.S.S. officials announced Thursday that the Bassmaster Elite Series event scheduled for Sept. 19-22 on Fort Gibson Lake will instead be held on Lake Tenkiller.

The lakes are located just 40 miles apart in Oklahoma, and Cherokee Casino Tahlequah will still serve as the host for what is to be the final regular-season Elite Series event of the year.

When the 2019 schedule was first announced, the event was scheduled at Fort Gibson for May 16-19. Heavy rain and flash flooding in the region forced its postponement and ultimately forced the change to a different venue.

“The ongoing high water at Fort Gibson Lake and the uncertainty of dam repairs downstream at Webber Falls really left us no choice,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “We certainly made every effort to hold the event on Fort Gibson Lake, but the conditions just wouldn’t allow it.”

B.A.S.S. Tournament Director Trip Weldon, who notified the 75 Elite Series anglers of the change by email Thursday afternoon, said it was imperative to complete a full schedule of nine regular-season events. Leaving Fort Gibson as the tournament venue would have created a greater risk for cancellation.

“Anglers have been working hard all year, jockeying for position in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings,” Weldon said. “They’ve been promised nine events and then the Angler of the Year Championship, and we want to make every effort as an organization to make sure all of those events are held.”

The tournament will determine the final order of the Angler of the Year standings, with only the Top 50 anglers advancing to the AOY Championship scheduled for Sept. 28-Oct. 1 on Michigan’s Lake St. Clair.

Takeoffs at Lake Tenkiller will be held at 7 a.m. CT from Chicken Creek Point Public Use Area in Cookson, Okla., and weigh-ins on Days 1 and 2 will also be held in the same area. Weigh-ins on Days 3 and 4 will move to Cherokee Casino Tahlequah at 4 p.m.

Due to the no-information rule governing all Elite Series events, the venue went off-limits the moment the anglers were notified of the change.

This will be B.A.S.S.’s first visit to the 12,900-acre fishery for a major event

Grand Lake Set For Next Basspro.com Central Open Stop

[print_link]

GROVE, Okla. — Darold Gleason’s predicting a wide-open playing field with plenty of options, but challenging conditions, for the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open, Sept. 12-14 on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake.

Gleason, the Louisiana pro who won the division opener on Toledo Bend in late February, has been practicing on Grand for about 10 days. He reports a consistent swelter with calm, stable weather that appears to be the precursor for the tournament week.

“It’s going to be a grinder,” Gleason said. “It’s been really, really hot in Oklahoma with daytime temperatures in the mid-90’s and the heat index around 100. There hasn’t been much wind or clouds and it kinda looks like that will continue. The long-range forecasts I’ve seen don’t show any kind of front.

“They’ve had a ton of rain this year, like everywhere else has and I think we’re finally getting to the point where that’s going to lay off and the lake’s going to stabilize.”

On that note, let’s look at the tournament waters.

Lake Profile

•   Proper name: Grand Lake of the Cherokees

•   The 1940 completion of the Pensacola Dam on the lower Neosho River (aka Grand River) completed this 46,500-acre reservoir located in the Ozark foothills.

•   With 460 miles of shoreline and an average depth of about 36 feet, Grand Lake is operated by the Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA).

•   Lake complexion comprises rocky shorelines, marinas/docks, bridges, points, riprap and scattered laydowns. Prominent arms include the Elk River, Neosho River, Wolf Creek, Honey Creek, Horse Creek and Drowning Creek.

•   At one week before the tournament, Grand lake stands about 2.23 feet above the seasonal conservation pool level of 743.

“Clarity’s fair; it’s not superclear but it’s fine,” Gleason said. “You can see 1 1/2 to 2 feet in most places. I would like to see some wind to stir things up. A lot of the bait’s suspended and the fish are roaming, so if we get some sustained wind, which I haven’t seen any of, I think that will corral some shad on the bank and put the fish in more of a feeding mode.”

How They’ll Fish

“The fish are in a fall transition and I think the biggest thing will be adjusting each day to what the fish are doing,” Gleason said. “You may be catching them a certain way in practice, but if we get a little wind blowing in a different direction, or if we get a little cloud cover, it’s going to be all about dropping what you’re doing and making those changes. I think the key to success will be staying on your toes.”

Predicting what he termed a “junker’s delight,” Gleason explains that mid-September will see a mix of fish clinging to summer patterns, while others embrace the inevitable seasonal shift.

“It doesn’t seem that any one technique really stands out, so you can kind of do what you want to do,” Gleason said. “You’ll have some guys fishing docks, but even that is versatile. The lake has docks in 5 feet and it has docks in 40 feet. The way the fish are scattered, there are a few on all of them.”

Come tournament time, the bait selection is likely to include just about anything from shallow topwaters, to shaky heads, to deep cranking and dragging big worms. That being said, Gleason points out that his highest confidence is with those Grand Lake docks.

“Unless someone finds a honey hole out deep and just grinds on it, I think if a guy figures out a little dock pattern in a couple different creeks, that’s going to be the stand-out deal,” Gleason said.

Sticking It Out

Whatever competitors pursue, Gleason said performance will require patience and perseverance.

“I think you have to put your head down, keep the trolling motor on, cover a lot of areas and when you get a little something going, just run with it,” he said. “It seems like there are little bite windows each day where you’ll get three or four in an hour and then you’ll go four or five hours without a bite.

“I feel like you’re going to have to capitalize whenever that bite’s happening. You’re going to have to make hay while it’s happening.”

Gleason said he’s looking for about 13 to 14 pounds a day to make the final round cut. For a winning total, he can see it taking 47 to 48.

“This is such a great lake and it has a lot of fish in it,” Gleason said. “Someone’s always going to catch ‘em.”

Grove Convention & Tourism Bureau is the local host for this event.

Tips to Improve Your Late Summer Bass Fishing RAPALA September 3,3019

Right around September the temperature usually starts to cool down, cold rains and cold fronts can cool the water in a hurry. Once this starts to happen, one of the first things you might notice is that shallow water vegetation starts to die off which will push fish to deeper water and structure to get into a more comfortable and healthier environment. Fortunately for us anglers, as they make the push to deeper grass, they tend to group up which can make for an amazing day on the water once you find them.

Focus On Grass
If the lake you are fishing has a lot of submergent vegetation, start to look for deeper weed lines that still have healthy green vegetation growing, typically anywhere from 7-14ft depending on the water clarity. Healthy grass is very important this time of year because it is one of the only sources of cover that is still alive at this time of year that produces oxygen for the fish. Focus on the deepest, greenest grass you can find, and to find the ‘spot-on-a-spot’ don’t forget to key in on the irregularities like hard bottom, thick clumps, and points or turns in the weed line.

When dissecting these weed lines, one of the best baits to throw is a lipless crankbait. When you are fishing a lipless crankbait in the grass, make a long cast over the top of the grass and keep the bait just above the top of the grass so you are ticking the tips of the weeds. One of the best tips on throwing a lipless crankbait in the grass is letting the bait get slightly hung up in the grass and rip it out. If there is a bass following the bait deciding whether to bite or not and you rip it out of the grass, it causes a reaction bite and can put a lot more fish in the boat that would have otherwise kept swimming by. Try a Storm® Arashi® Vibe, throw it on 14-17lb Sufix® Advance® Fluorocarbon, a 7’ – 7’6” MH rod with a soft tip and a slow gear ratio reel and you can cover a lot of water in a hurry.

Once you have located a school of fish with a bait like a lipless crankbait, slow down and pick apart the cover where you got bit. One of the best lures to throw when picking apart deep grass is a VMC® Tokyo® Rig.

The Tokyo Rig has quickly become the go to bait for a lot of anglers simply because of its versatility and how efficient it is going in and out of the cover, especially grass. The best setup for this situation is throwing the Tokyo Rig on a 7’3” – 7’6” MH or H rod, high speed gear ratio reel, and use a 30-40lb braid like Sufix 832 connected to an 8-10ft 17-20lb Sufix® Advance® Fluorocarbon for a leader using a FG knot. In the past, a lot of people have fished this on either only braid or only fluorocarbon, but fishing with a leader gives you the best of both worlds. The braid will be able to cut through the vegetation making it easier to quickly get the fish out of the cover, and the fluorocarbon is invisible underwater which can really pay dividends when fishing on clear or pressured lakes.

Next time you are on the lake and notice that the fish have stopped biting shallow, give deep grass a try and once you locate a school or find that special ‘spot-on-a-spot’, you can catch dozens of fish on a weed clump the size of the front deck of your boat.

[print_link]

OVERVIEW: Fishing should improve the next few weeks. Water temperature has started to fall. Most species of fish will become more active this month. Look for striper fishing to continue to improve! Water temperature will be in the 70’s. The baitfish will start to move to the creeks and shallow water the later part of this month.

Largemouth Bass- Fishing will improve this month. Best lures will be drop shot rigs, crank baits, shaky heads, Carolina rigs, plastic worms and top water lures. Most largemouth bass will be caught on points, rock piles, brush piles and docks. Best depths will be from the surface to 20 feet deep. Points, rocks, stumps and brush are a key factor to finding bass this month. Please release the bass quickly during hot months. Please practice catch and release.

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing should be fair. Best areas will be rocks, ledges, and main channel points. Best lures will be top water lures, Ned rigs, hair jigs, drop shot rigs and Carolina rigs. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Most smallmouth bass will be suspended around schools of shad. Cloudy days are good times to try your luck! Light line will increase your chances to catch smallmouth bass. Night fishing will be fair.

Striped Bass- Fishing will be good. Stripers will be caught in the lower to mid sections of the lake and in the larger creeks. Best lures will be swim baits, top water lures, jigging spoons and Zoom flukes fished on 1/2 to 3/4 oz. lead heads. The best depths will be from near the surface to 60 feet deep. Vertical jigging is one of the best methods to catch stripers in the warm months. Try to find areas with the largest concentrations of baitfish. Some schools of stripers will surface this month. Live bait fished on planner boards and down lines are also good methods this month.

Crappie- Fishing for crappie will be fair this month. They will be found 5 to 15 feet deep. Best areas will be in the main creeks around docks, fallen trees, stumps and brush piles in the mid to upper parts of the lake. Small live minnows and 1 ½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/32 to 1/16 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month.

TIP OF THE Month: Watch for the movement of the baitfish this month! It will be the key to catching bass and stripers. Fishing during the early morning, late afternoon and night is usually the best time to fish this month. Make sure you wear your life jacket and never fish alone at night! Make sure your running lights are on after dark! You can never be too careful when boating. Remember to please practice catch and release! PLEASE TAKE A KID FISHING!

Cutting-Edge Colors Enliven Z-Man’s Ultimate Ned Rig Bait

An in-depth look at six new Finesse TRD patterns

LADSON, SC (August 29, 2019) – “Lure color doesn’t matter,” contends Major League Fishing star Mark Daniels Jr., with a playful grin. “Until it matters.”

And when it matters, says the popular Alabama angler, “the right color can make or break your day on the water. Especially in clear or heavily fished water,” notes Daniels, “bass discern subtle shades of color and often respond by biting baits that reflect these specific, desirable hues, while rejecting others. In these situations, you don’t want to be the guy who runs out of that it color pattern.”

Expanding its roster of coveted Ned Rig baits, Z-Man recently unveiled six new colors of the Finesse TRD™. The fresh patterns include cutting-edge color combinations inspired by the West Coast finesse fishing scene, plus lively enhancements of classic earth-tones and innovative hatch-matching hues.

In total, Z-Man’s definitive finesse bait now gives anglers 28 intricate, fish-catching colors from which to choose.

Fresh off the 2018 Bassmaster Elite event on the St. Lawrence River, Daniels brought back ideas for a customized goby pattern. “Goby Bryant, man. Goby Bryant,” Daniels calls out the new baitfish pattern by name. “It’s a killer match of a lighter-phase round goby: olive-green-brown back with black and orange flake and a subdued, pearlescent belly. You gotta have this color when you’re fishing the St. Lawrence, the Great Lakes or any other place bass eat gobies. Goby Bryant’s been getting me lots of bites both on a Ned-rigged Finesse TRD and Z-Man’s dropshot hero, the Trick ShotZ™.”

From Great Lakes gobies and green pumpkins to West Coast exotics, Z-Man continues to pioneer new color processes for ElaZtech®—the generation-defining softbait material with radical, fish-catching properties.

FLW Tour pro and Ned Rig fan Brian “B-Lat” Latimer likes the new Meat Dog pattern Finesse TRD for good reason.

“The new Meat Dog pattern is Z-Man’s shot at mimicking the vibrant look and appeal of West Coast hand-poured worms,” says popular Washington-based bass pro Luke Clausen. “We’ve been fishing this sweet color sort of under the radar in the Finesse ShadZ™ for a few years. We’re stoked to now have it in the Finesse TRD, as well.

“In clear water Western reservoirs, showing bass different, contrasting hues—particularly mixes of browns and brighter iridescents— can make a huge difference,” Clausen explains. “In terms of number of bites, a Meat Dog TRD is sort of the West Coast equivalent of green pumpkin. Some days, it’s that good. But we’ve found these patterns also spill over into other clear water fisheries, like Lake Lanier, Georgia.”

Composed of what Clausen calls an electric purple back and subtle brown/chartreuse underside, Z-Man’s Meat Dog pattern lacks glitter by intent, and underwater, exhibits an almost translucent sheen. Named by FLW Tour angler Brian “B-Lat” Latimer, the Z-Man Meat Dog-pattern Finesse TRD has frequently been spotted tied to the rods of Clausen, Daniels and B-Lat himself.

Another new clear water / West Coast finesse color, Twilight features a two-tier lamination process, melding a vibrant purple back with an equally radiant pink belly. Twilight is now available in both the Finesse TRD and Big TRD™.

Mood Ring—a dark-hued coupling of black with blue glitter and deep purple—has previously proven itself as a saltwater color in Z-Man’s TroutTrick®. The subtle two-tone bait also represents a West Coast / finesse pattern, juxtaposing an earth tone with a softer iridescent.

A true Z-Man original, Bubble Gut melds a green pumpkin back with a pink/red flake belly. The eye-catching pattern amps up the classic finesse pattern with bright pink, a trending smallmouth color.

The sixth new Finesse TRD pattern comes from Ned Rig fanatics who have asked for a bait to throw where red-tinted crayfish abound. Hot Craw offers undeniable visual appeal, adding a red / gold flake underside to a green pumpkin back.

“Designing new colors is a lot of fun for us because with ElaZtech, it’s uncharted territory,” says Z-Man president Daniel Nussbaum. “We’re working with a totally unique material with superior fishing advantages like durability, softness and buoyancy. But it also means we’re writing our own playbook to develop new colors and to give anglers the bait patterns they need.

“Usually, we go through at least ten trials to get the color just the way we want it,” Nussbaum adds. “Sometimes, we wind up with a totally different look we didn’t anticipate, which ultimately catches more fish than our original vision—and that’s cool in our book.”

Among the foremost bass baits today, Z-Man’s Finesse TRD and full line of finesse superbaits continue to pioneer the Ned Rig category with shapes, actions and colors that consistently put fish in the boat. To tour the full line of Z-Man ElaZtech baits, visit www.zmanfishing.com.
