Frazier Catapults To Victory At St. Lawrence With Massive Final-Day Limit

Georgia pro Micah Frazier storms from 10th place on Championship Sunday to win the 2019 Berkley Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River presented by Black Velvet after weighing-in 25 pounds, 9 ounces, giving him a four-day total of 87-4.

Frazier Catapults To Victory At St. Lawrence With Massive Final-Day Limit

WADDINGTON, N.Y. — The great smallmouth battle of 2019, also known as the Berkley Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River presented by Black Velvet, came down to a rookie Canadian pro who has spent his life plying the pristine waters of the storied fishery and a young Georgia pro who is experiencing a breakout season.

Chris Johnston of Peterborough, Canada, was the favorite leading up to this event because of his history on the St. Lawrence. Micah Frazier of Newnan, Ga., wasn’t on the radar of anglers who may finish in the top half of the field. As the scales settled in Waddington, N.Y., these two prolific pros held their breath alongside thousands of fans waiting to see which of these anglers would wear the crown.

And by just 14 ounces, Frazier toppled the overwhelming favorite. The Georgia pro’s massive 25-pound, 9-ounce limit on Day 4 vaulted him from 10th place to Elite Series champion, completing a four-day total of 87-4.

“I had no idea I had that much weight,” Frazier admitted. “I’m terrible at judging smallmouth. Still, I felt like I had an outside shot at winning as long as the leaders didn’t crush them.”

Frazier caught bass all day long. His culls were countless, and the big fish kept on biting his bait. That bait, the only one he used all four days of the event, was a prototype Yum Ned Dinger fished on 1/4- or 1/8-ounce mushroom jigheads. “I don’t think the bait is out yet, but it mimics a goby better than anything I’ve seen. It has a hollow section in the tail that makes it stand up and it bubbles a little when you shake it.”

Frazier’s pattern was simple. The Georgia pro focused on areas 18 to 40 feet deep, keeping his line perfectly vertical under the boat while drifting with the current. “I’d seen some light sand spots and there were a lot of mussels and shells there,” he said.

Frazier’s win puts an exclamation mark on a breakout season. The soft-spoken pro has been fishing the Elite Series since 2016, but this year has captured two third-place finishes (Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest on Lake Fork and the Bassmaster Elite at Lake Hartwell) along with his win on the St. Lawrence.

“This year has been so special. The atmosphere on the Elite Series now is just incredible. All the guys are positive and I have never had so much fun fishing as I have had this year. B.A.S.S. and Bassmaster fans are just awesome.”

Johnston, who led the first three days of the event and was the hands-down favorite to win, struggled most of the day, but landed two key fish in the last 30 minutes to put him back in contention. “My main area ran out of big fish. I knew I was going to have to grind today,” the Canadian pro said.

His grinding produced a solid 20-pound, 1-ounce limit. But, it fell just slightly short of overcoming the final-day heroics of Frazier. Johnston finished in second place with 86-6. “It’s tough, you know. I had an entire country cheering for me this week. It’s been surreal. I wanted it for all these awesome fans more than anything and I left it all out there.”

Johnston sight-fished for the majority of his weight over the past four days. He was fishing a shallow flat that featured rock veins and grass. “I threw a handmade hair jig a lot, and caught some on it. But mainly, I’d see fish follow it and then throw back with a Senko or tube to catch them.”

Alabama pro Scott Canterbury was hoping to survive the northern swing of the Elite Series, and ended up exceeding that expectation after he weighed in 21-5 on the final day for a four-day total of 84-8 and the third-place spot.

“I am so blessed to have had such an incredible week,” the veteran pro admits. “I have never fished this body of water before and came here not really knowing what to expect. So, I identified a few areas with some bigger-than-average bass and just slowed way down and fished. I just went fishing.”

His fishing focused on water down to 45 feet, drifting a Berkley Flat Worm on a drop-shot rig around rocky seams. “I’d be dragging the bait with the current, feel my weight hit some rocks, and typically that’s where the bigger fish would bite.”

Canterbury’s third-place showing at the St. Lawrence puts him in first place in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race with only three events remaining. He was awarded $1,000 for taking the lead. Indiana’s Bill Lowen moved up to second place in the AOY race with an 11th-place effort, and Florida’s Drew Cook slid to third.

The Phoenix Boats Big Bass award and $1,500 went to Steve Kennedy for the 6-2 giant he landed on Day 1.

Canterbury earned $3,000 in Toyota Bonus Bucks for being the highest placing angler to drive a Toyota, while Keith Combs earned an extra $2,000 for being the second highest-placing pro to drive a Toyota.

Johnston Clings To Day 3 St. Lawrence Lead, Zaldain Surges

Johnston Clings To Day 3 St. Lawrence Lead, Zaldain Surges

[print_link]

WADDINGTON, N.Y. — The leaderboard is getting interesting at the 2019 Berkley Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River presented by Black Velvet, as Canadian Chris Johnston maintained the top spot after three days of competition. His 19-pound, 1-ounce limit gave him an impressive three-day total of 66-5. However, his lead is miniscule.

“I had a really tough day,” Johnston admitted. “I started in the same place I have started the past two days. I immediately lost a 5 1/2 pounder. That hurt. I caught only one keeper, a 3-pounder, over the next hour. The cloud cover made it impossible to see the fish, so I couldn’t work them like I needed to. So, I left and went to new water.”

Although most anglers wouldn’t call catching over 19 pounds a tough day, Johnston’s limits have been shrinking since Day 1. He weighed in the event’s largest limit on Day 1 (24-7), and 22-13 on Day 2.

“I was afraid my fish would run out. I have a tough decision to make tonight. I may trash everything I’ve been doing and head toward Lake Ontario. I practiced up there and know that the winning limit can be caught there. I just have to decide whether it’s worth the gamble,” said Johnston.

If the gamble pays off, Johnston would be the first Canadian angler in history to win an Elite Series event.

A scant 6 ounces distant sits Texas-based pro Chris Zaldain. His monster Day 3 limit of 23-12 gives him 65-15 heading into Championship Sunday.

“I couldn’t hardly sleep last night because I was looking forward to this morning. The wind, the clouds … everything set up perfectly for the area I’m fishing,” he said.

However, his morning started off slowly. “I fished my first three primary spots and didn’t get a bite. However, I made a key adjustment by sliding out just a little deeper and caught the 5-11 and 5-15 on back-to back drops.” Zaldain said the problem was not catching the fish, but finding them.

“I only caught 8 or 9 keepers today,” the veteran Elite pro said. “However, when I marked them on my Humminbird, I could get them to eat.” And Zaldain said he marked plenty of other big fish, which should make tomorrow’s Championship weigh-in something special to watch, assuming he makes it back.

He is fishing near Lake Ontario, which is an hour and 15 minutes away from launch. He ran out of gas the first day trying to get back and had to hitch a ride with another competitor. “Yes, I will be stopping for gas tomorrow,” he promised.

Much like Johnston, New Jersey pro Greg DiPalma’s limits have been shrinking since Day 1. Still, the Elite Series standout boated 19-0 for a three-day total of 64-1 to take the third-place spot. “I fished the exact same stuff I fished yesterday with the exact same baits, but the bite simply got tougher,” he said.

DiPalma has been switching between a jig and a Carolina rig to dupe St. Lawrence smallmouth. “I switched to the Carolina rig because I was losing too many fish on the jig. But today, the fish would bite the C-rig and spit the bait out really fast. It was strange. So, I’m pretty sure I’m going to need to make some adjustments. I have been wanting to go largemouth fishing since yesterday, so I’m thinking about targeting the green fish tomorrow.”

Although the St. Lawrence River is fishing tougher than it did last year, the fishery is proving it deserves the No. 1 ranking Bassmaster Magazine awarded it earlier this year. Of the 35 pros fishing Semi-Final Saturday, 21 weighed in more than 18 pounds and three limits exceeded the 23-pound mark. Although Zaldain brought in two fish nearly reaching the 6-pound mark, it was Florida pro Drew Benton who walked away with the Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the day with a smallmouth weighing 6 pounds even.

Chris Johnston Maintains Slim Day 2 Lead At St. Lawrence

Chris Johnston Maintains Slim Day 2 Lead At St. Lawrence

[print_link]

WADDINGTON, N.Y. — The only thing clearer than the pristine waters of New York’s St. Lawrence River is the realization that Elite Series pro Chris Johnston is a force to be reckoned with. The Canadian is known as a smallmouth specialist and earned that moniker after the first two days of the 2019 Berkley Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River presented by Black Velvet. Johnston weighed in 22-13 today, giving him a two-day total of 47-4 and the lead heading into Semi-Final Saturday. Still, Johnston is not overconfident.

“I have been leading on Day 2 on this river for more tournaments than I can count, and have blown it on the third day. So, I’m not going to count my chickens just yet,” Johnston said. Plus, the area he has fished relentlessly over the past two days alongside Elite Series pro Shane LeHew may no longer hold enough fish for the win. “I didn’t get a lot of bites today and only caught six or seven 4-pound fish there. And I never saw a kicker fish. So, I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to scramble tomorrow. I really believe the guy that wins this event is going to be the one who makes the best adjustments on the fly. I just hope I can figure out those adjustments.”

Hot on the trail of Johnston is Elite Series veteran Steve Kennedy, who is only 15 ounces out of the lead. The affable Alabama pro followed up his impressive Day 1 limit of 23-7 with another solid 22-14 worth of smallmouth for a total of 46-5. “I’m living on the edge,” Kennedy admitted. “I’m only fishing for seven or eight bites per day. If the weather report is accurate and we get overcast skies tomorrow, I might have to change my game plan.”

Kennedy’s tactic so far has been to cast a big glide bait to locate fish, then cast to the fish with a swim bait or hair jig. However, if he can’t see the fish, his weight could slide south.

“I’ve caught some of my biggest fish looking at them. I mean, I’ve had to cast four or five times at the bass to get them to bite. If I can’t see them, I may be in trouble.”

New Jersey pro Greg DiPalma holds the third-place slot after boating 21-11 on Day 2. His total of 45-1 puts him in solid striking distance of holding the big blue Elite Series trophy at the conclusion of the event, as he is just a couple pounds out of the lead. And unlike Johnston and Kennedy, DiPalma is looking forward to overcast skies tomorrow.

“I’m fishing the 20- to 30-foot zone, so sunshine isn’t as crucial.” DiPalma also made an important adjustment today, which has him feeling confident going into Semi-Final Saturday. “Yesterday, I basically dragged a jig for all my fish, and I lost a bunch of big ones. Today, I switched to a Carolina rig and only lost one. I’m only sharing my water with one other angler and there are a bunch of bass there, so I’m confident I can duplicate my weight.”

The biggest move of the day came from Louisiana pro Caleb Sumrall, who weighed in 23-6, the biggest limit of the day, and vaulted to 11th place with a two-day total of 41-13. Indiana pro Bill Lowen caught the second biggest limit of the day, 23-4, and moved into 5th place with 44-11.

Brian Snowden landed the Phoenix Boats big bass of the day, a 5-13, which gave him a two-day total of 44-7 and 6th place. The St. Lawrence River, name the No. 1 lake in the nation by Bassmaster Magazine, again showed off, as 22 limits exceeding 20 pounds were brought to the scales.

The Remarkably Simple Guide On Where and When To Fish Each Size Whopper Plopper

The Remarkably Simple Guide On Where and When To Fish Each Size Whopper Plopper

[print_link]

Musky anglers deserve credit for starting the Whopper Plopper craze when they created similar homemade baits with metal tails.

However, companies had trouble mass-producing those metal-tail baits with that distinctive plopping sound until Larry Dahlberg designed the Whopper Plopper for River2Sea as a musky lure. The company introduced the lure with a softer plastic tail in the 190 size of 7 1/2 inches.

If You Build Them Fish Will Come

When the company started receiving several photos of 8-pound smallmouth and heavyweight largemouth being caught by anglers throwing the 190 Whopper Plopper for stripers and musky, a new smaller version of the lure was designed in 2011.

The 5-inch 130 Whopper Plopper started producing lunker bass immediately but River2Sea pro staffers tried to keep the lure a secret to win tournaments on the new lure.

The increasing popularity of the Whopper Plopper prompted the company to create three more downsized models: the 110 (4 3/8 inches), 90 (3 1/2 inches) and 75 (3 inches).

Whopper Plopper Size Breakdown

The Whopper Plopper 130

When I am bass fishing in the fall, I prefer throwing the 130 Whopper Plopper because it matches the size of the gizzard shad bass are eating then on my home waters of Lake of the Ozarks.

The Whopper PLopper 110

When fishing pressure causes bass to ignore the 130 I downscale to the 110 version to tempt the fish into biting again. These two models usually produce hard strikes from quality bass so I throw the lures on 30- to 50-pound braid with a 7 1/2-foot flipping stick. The bass are usually foraging on the gizzard shad along open ledge rock banks during this time, which allows me to use the heavier tackle because I don’t have to make accurate casts to specific targets then.

The Whopper Plopper 90

The 90 Whopper Plopper is my favorite size for throwing to the corners of boat docks for suspended bass during the postspawn and early fall. I need to be more accurate with my casts in this situation so I throw this lure on 14-pound test monofilament and a 6 1/2- or 7-foot medium-action casting rod.

The Whopper Plopper 75

The 75 size is ideal for throwing to bass busting baitfish on the surface during the summer. The 3-inch model best matches the size of the shad bass are feeding on then.

POTOMAC RIVER SET FOR COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

POTOMAC RIVER SET FOR COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

[print_link]

CHARLES COUNTY, Md. (Aug. 15, 2019) – The Potomac River is set to host some of the top regional bass anglers Aug. 22-24 for the Costa Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Series Northern Division tournament on the Potomac River presented by Lowrance. The three-day tournament will feature a field of more than 250 pros and co-anglers vying for the top prize package of up to $92,000, including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Mercury or Evinrude outboard in the Pro Division. Valuable points in the Northern Division presented by Gajo Baits Angler of the Year race are also up for grabs.

“I think the Potomac River is going to fish pretty well,” said FLW Tour pro Bryan Schmitt, of Deale, Maryland, who has three career wins in Costa FLW Series competition on the Potomac River. “Over the last two months a substantial amount of hydrilla has started to grow. It’s got the water really clean and turned the river into a better fishery.

“I think we’ll see traditional Potomac tactics [next week] – flipping grass with creature-style baits like a Missile [Baits] D Bomb, topwaters in the grass, swimjigs, ChatterBaits, and stickbait worms,” said Schmitt. “Some hard structure like docks or rocks will be in play, but it will mainly be a grass deal. It’s going to be about who can find that magic spot within a spot, or who can get that magic place to themselves.”

Schmitt went on to say that mid-river has been really productive, especially Quantico and Chicamuxen creeks. He mentioned Potomac Creek, which is farther south, as well.

“I think it will take 46 pounds over the three days to win – 15 pounds a day will be banging on the door for sure,” said Schmitt. “I typically would predict a hair more, but it’s fishing a little bit tougher than normal. There will be a lot of fish caught, though, and a lot of good ones, too.”

Anglers will take off from Smallwood State Park, located at 2750 Sweden Point Road, in Marbury, Maryland, at 6:30 a.m. EDT each day of competition. Weigh-ins each day will also be held at the park beginning at 2:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The tournament is being hosted by the Charles County Board of Commissioners.

In Costa FLW Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event. At the Potomac River, pros will fish for a top prize of up to $92,000 including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Mercury or Evinrude outboard if Ranger Cup qualified. Co-anglers will cast for a brand new Ranger Z175 boat with a 115-horsepower Mercury or Evinrude outboard, and $5,000 if Ranger Cup qualified.

The Costa FLW Series consists of five U.S. divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western – along with the International division. Each U.S. division consists of three regular-season tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to compete in the season-ending Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2019 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 on Lake Cumberland in Burnside, Kentucky.

Elites Expecting Different Scene For Cayuga Return

[print_link]

UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. — When the Bassmaster Elite Series last visited Cayuga Lake in 2016, that late-June event saw lots of fish on beds. Next week’s return to this Western New York lake will find anglers facing a completely different seasonal complexion when the SiteOne Bassmaster Elite visits Union Springs, N.Y., Aug. 22-25.

“The first time we were there for an Elite event, it was a summertime event (late August, 2014) and it was probably 99 percent largemouth,” said Bassmaster Elite Series pro Keith Combs. “When we went back in 2016, it was kind of a spawn/postspawn event and we saw a few more smallmouth. I expect to see a couple of big smallmouth this time, but not many.”

The longest of New York’s glacial Finger Lakes, Cayuga stretches nearly 40 miles from its namesake town, south to Ithaca. Second-largest in surface area, the lake covers 66 square miles; but in true Finger Lake form, it averages only 1.7 miles wide — 3 1/2 at the widest.

Also typical of Finger Lake makeup is Cayuga’s north-south orientation, steep sides, shallow top and bottom ends and plunging center, which reaches approximately 435 feet. With its water level controlled by the Mud Lock at its north end, Cayuga links to Lake Ontario via the Erie Canal on its upper end, while the Seneca River (aka Cayuga-Seneca Canal) branches southwest from this cross-state commercial navigation artery and into Seneca Lake.

As Combs notes, grass and docks comprise the primary habitat elements likely to dominate the week’s fishing.

“If it’s anything like the last visits, I think grass will be more of a player; it’s just the main feature of that lake,” he said. “This lake has a lot of milfoil, eel grass and a variety of other vegetation.”

Combs expects to see much of the field focusing on large areas of matted grass with jigs and Texas-rigged plastics. Frogs could also play a role, particularly around shoreline cover.

Pitching and skipping docks should also produce keepers, but don’t count out the occasional reaction bite on spinnerbaits, jerkbaits and bladed jigs. Although somewhat of an outlier, it’s likely a handful of anglers will dial in a smallmouth bite with tubes or drop shots.

“In the 2016 spring tournament, there were some 4 1/2 to 5 pounders weighed in and we’ll see that again this year,” Combs said. “I think they’re probably roaming in deep water this time of year, but if a guy finds the right area where they’re schooling, smallmouth can definitely be a factor.”

Cayuga’s not a huge lake, so crowding may become a factor, especially as the event wears on. The long-range weather forecast looks stable; and that’s a good thing for anglers who do not want to see big winds.

“We found out last time that, with its depth and the direction it lays, Cayuga gets extremely rough,” Combs said. “It’s completely exposed. There’s a river on both ends, but there’s nowhere to get out of the wind. You want to give yourself plenty of time to run.”

In 2016, it took a four-day total of nearly 72 pounds to win. Combs said he’s looking for 15- to 16-pound daily weights to make the final round, with about 80 taking the trophy.
