Chris Johnston Smashes St. Lawrence Smallmouth For Day 1 Lead

WADDINGTON, N.Y. — Expectations for the 2019 Berkley Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River presented by Black Velvet were slightly muted going into Day 1. After all, last year’s event on this storied fishery was dubbed as the best smallmouth tournament in the history of man, and practice for most of the Elite Series pros this time around was tough. There was no way, according to reports from the competitors, that this year’s event could match the statistics from the previous year. However, Chris Johnston proved that The No. 1 fishery in the nation according to Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes rankings was still top of the class. The Canadian pro boated 24-7, including a 5-13 behemoth, to take the Day 1 lead.

“My day started pretty rough,” Johnston admitted. “I lost the first three fish I hooked, two 4s and a 5. I thought ‘oh, no, it’s going to be one of those days.’ But then, I landed a couple of good ones, and then caught one that nearly weighed 6 pounds. So, I’m really happy with how much weight I ended up with today.” Johnston is a little worried about whether or not he will be able to reproduce the massive limit over the next three days of the event. “I only have one really good spot, and I’m sharing it with another angler. So, I don’t know if it will hold up.”

Right on the heels of Johnston is Alabama pro Scott Canterbury, who boated 23-8. Unlike the Canadian pro, who has spent countless hours fishing the St. Lawrence River, Canterbury is fishing the New York waters for the very first time. “A lot of my practice was spent driving around, trying to learn the landscape of this fishery. I started to figure a few things out, and a lot of what doesn’t work here, and finally pieced together a game plan that would help me survive this tournament. My weight today is a blessing, I just hope I can reproduce it tomorrow.”

Veteran Elite Series pro Steve Kennedy weighed in 23-7 to take the third-place position, which included the Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the day, a 6-2 monster smallmouth. “I am doing something a lot different than most of the field,” the Alabama pro admitted. “I hand painted a big glide bait to look like a perch. I am using it as a search bait for individual fish. They follow the glide bait and show themselves, then I throw a follow-up lure to catch them.” Like the other top anglers, Kennedy is not sure if there are enough big fish in his area to bring another massive limit to the scales. “I have seen a lot of 4 pounders, but those 5- and 6-pound fish are rare where I am. I’m hoping more bass move into the area, otherwise I’ll have to go to Plan B.”

As for the expectations leading into this episode of the St. Lawrence Smallmouthfest, they were certainly exceeded. There were 35 limits exceeding 19 pounds, 26 of which topped the 20-pound mark and five eclipsed 23 pounds.

Bryan Thrift Wins His First FLW Cup Championship at Lake Hamilton

Sturtevant, Wis. – Evinrude announced today that Evinrude angler Bryan Thrift won the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Cup Championship, held August 9-11 on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas. This was Thrift’s first Championship win.

Thrift finished with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 38 pounds, 7 ounces, winning by a 5-pound, 1-ounce margin. Fellow Evinrude pros Scott Martin and Josh Douglas finished fifth and eighth respectively. Sunday’s final weigh-in marked the finale of the 2019 FLW Tour, which featured 52 of the best professional bass anglers from across North America. Leading the tournament on all three days of competition, Thrift took home the $300,000 top prize.

Since he joined the Tour in 2007, Thrift has had tremendous success, finishing in the top-10 in the Angler of the Year standings every year. In his first season, Thrift took home the FLW Tour Rookie of the Year trophy. In 2010 he won the prestigious FLW Angler of the Year trophy. In his 13-year career, he has finished 67 times in the top ten and won 12 tournaments. His career earnings are over $3 million, making him the second all-time leading money winner in FLW history.

“I have been very fortunate to turn a pastime that I love into a career,” said Thrift. “My success in this event, as well as over the past several years has all been due to being able to count on my equipment to get me where I need to go, get on the fish and bring them in. I have trusted my Evinrude engine for years and it has never let me down.”

“We are very excited about Bryan’s continued success,” said Tracy Crocker, president of the BRP Marine Group. “This has been an exciting year on the professional fishing tournament circuit and we look forward to the upcoming year.”

Evinrude’s engine line up, from 3.5 to 300 HP, offers customers superior value across a full range of applications, and are available at authorized Evinrude dealerships worldwide. Follow Evinrude on Facebook at www.facebook.com/brpevinrude.

Night Fishing Secrets: Three Bass Baits To Fish In The Moonlight

[print_link]

Bass fishing at night when the summer sun makes daylight fishing unbearable on your favorite lake can be the key to hauling a big sack of bass.

After the sun goes down and the water cools a little bit, bass becomes more active during the nocturnal hours and start craving a late-night meal. The bass’ increased activity at night allows you to use a wider range of lure, but a bunch of tackle and rods and reels strewn out on your boat’s deck could result in broken tackle or a quick trip overboard. So to avoid any mishaps you can keep your deck clean by choosing a few productive lures for nighttime bass.

Here are three of my favorite lures for catching bass at night:

Plastic Worms

A 10-inch ribbon tail plastic worm is an old reliable for night fishing on lakes in my area. When bass burrow into the sunken brush piles at a lake, a slow-moving Texas-rigged magnum-sized plastic worm is ideal for working through the limbs of the cover. If the lake has been receiving a lot of fishing pressure, I use a 7-inch plastic worm, but my favorite lure for most nights is a 10-inch blue fleck Berkley Power Worm impaled on a 5/0 hook. I like the larger worm because it projects a larger profile making it easier for bass to detect in the dark.

The size of my worm weight depends on the depth of the brush piles. When bass are in brush 20 to 25 feet deep early in the night I match the worm with a 1/2-ounce weight. However late at night when bass move up into brush in the 10- to 15-foot range I switch to a 1/4-ounce weight for a slower fall.

The best structures for worm fishing at night are main lake points and ledges or steep banks halfway back in coves and creeks. Docks and marinas with lights also are good places to pitch a worm at night.

The most productive retrieve for nighttime worm fishing is slowly lifting and dropping the lure in the brush. Let the worm fall into the brush and then raise your rod up to 11 or 12 o’clock. This allows you to pull the worm over the limbs and work it through the brush slowly. Drop your rod down to le the worm fall back to the bottom and keep contact with the bait the whole time because a lot of strikes occur after the worm has fallen off of a limb.

Creature Baits

A bulky creature bait is a good changeup lure when bass ignore a plastic worm at night. The wider body of a creature bait casts a larger profile for bass to key on in the dark, especially on cloudy nights or when only a sliver of the moon is shining.

If the Texas-rigged creature bait fails to trigger any strikes, switching to a beaver-style soft plastic on a shaky head jig is a good alternative at night. Try this combo on the same rocky ledges and drops but retrieve the lure with a drag, pause and shake cadence for the best results. You can also try three to four quick pumps of your rod tip (1 to 2 inches at a time), reel up slack and follow up with another succession of quick pumps. This presentation allows you to keep shaking the jig in place without the jig hopping up too much or moving it away from the ledge or drop-off.

Spinnerbaits

Bass Night Fishing - Spinnerbait
The Terminator Spinnerbait

This blade bait is best for searching for the most aggressive nocturnal bass, especially on windy nights.

I prefer a 3/4- or 1-ounce spinnerbait with a black skirt and a single black Colorado blade for my nighttime bass fishing. I like to slow-roll the magnum spinnerbait along rock ledges of bluffs or over the limbs of brush piles 10 to 15 feet deep. A lighter 3/8-ounce spinnerbait is ideal for retrieving at a medium pace through standing timber for nocturnal bass suspended 5 to 8 feet deep. If the moon is bright and the fish are holding in the tops of the trees you can retrieve the lure a little faster to trigger strikes.

Adding a plastic chunk or spit-tail trailer increases the spinnerbait’s buoyancy to keep it from hanging up in the limbs of the brush piles. It also casts a larger profile for bass to target better in the dark.

McKendree Takes the Title

Standout college bass fishing team earns School of the Year honors

[print_link]

Park Falls, WI (August 12, 2019) – Team fishing is an interesting concept. New to bass tournaments, the idea of a true team effort where individuals strive for success of the group over that of themselves has never really been in play.

Given the growth in popularity of college fishing, however, anglers are now taking the team concept to new heights. And, while individual accolades are still important, one special award shouts unity more than any other: Bass Pro Shops School of the Year.

The brainchild of the popular Bass Pro Shops / Boat US Collegiate Bass Fishing Series, the School of the Year award considers performance in that circuit, as well as the BASS and FLW college fishing trails, when determining a champion. High finishes in major open tournaments also amass points. The award is incredibly hard to win, as the perennial top-seeded team from McKendree University found out with a near miss in 2017-2018.

After six years of competition and a top-10 finish nearly every time, the Bearcats finally got it done in the 2018-2019 season, taking the title by a wide margin.

“It was a real team effort this past year,” a relieved coach Jon Rinderer confirms. “This means everything in the college world of fishing.”

With help from his wife, Carla, Rinderer is taking the team-fishing concept to the next level with his athletes. “We travel to all the events, we organize everything, shop for all the food and cook all the meals,” he says. “We log over 12,000 miles annually, and every penny we can save, we use for gas and expenses.”

Rinderer admits that the cooking aspect – especially when trying to feed an army of twenty-something boys – can be quite the task. “At the Big Bass Bash on Kentucky Lake, we take the whole team – twelve boats – so it’s like having Christmas dinner every night,” he chuckles.

Through it all, Rinderer employs a message of unity and teamwork, which directly transfers into tournament performance. McKendree anglers begin with pre-tournament lake study, supplementing with important pointers from team veterans. “Many of the upper classmen now have experience on the tournament waters – including those on the Tennessee River. That was a struggle when we started,” Rinderer admits, as the vast waters of the mid-south were drastically different from those of McKendree’s home in Illinois.

During the team’s infancy, many of its members were understandably tight-lipped when it came to fishing locations and methods. After all, tournament bass anglers have always guarded their secrets. However, as college fishing evolved, so have the McKendree members, who are now “confident in multiple techniques, and finding and catching fish with each,” and anxious to “build and share on each other’s knowledge,” according to the coach.

Winning Team of the Year quickly proves the effectiveness of such an approach.

In addition to their performance on the water, the McKendree team has excelled in other areas within the fishing industry. Members have embraced the St. Croix Rod scholastic program, employing the finest rods in the industry to excel in the highest level of competition, and offering frontline insights in return. In addition, many former McKendree team members now work full time in the fishing world; one is even a college fishing coach, himself.

Rinderer confirms that turnover of athletes is always a concern for any college coach. “We have six new freshmen on the team this year (2019-2020), and four of my top guys from last season have graduated”

With such an overwhelming team concept trickling from the top down, however, there’s likely little room for concern. After all, proof is in performance. Once a perennial bridesmaid for School of the Year, McKendree’s unique team concept has pushed them over the top, and should threaten to do so for years to come.

As of the date of this release, McKendree is sitting in second place in the 2019-2020 School of the Year standings, well within striking distance of a repeat.

Chad Craven & Ben Cannon Win PBC Cashion Fishing Rods End of Year T.T. Qualifier #3 August 10th 2019

PBC CASHION FISHING RODS ‘END OF YEAR’ TEAM TOURNAMENT BASS FISHING TRAIL
QUALIFIER #3
Saturday August 10th, 2019 ~  ~ Falls Lake ~ ~ Ledge Rock Wildlife Ramp

It was a tough bite today in the PBC Cashion Fishing Rods ‘End of Year’ Team Tournament Bass Fishing Trail  Qualifier #3 at Falls Lake. Most of the 36 boat field had a hard time finding 5 good bass but one team did find the right pattern and were lucky enough to land 5 big bass!! Surface water temps were around 86 degrees and the  weather was great, light wind and temps run from 69 to 88. Typical summer bite for the lakes around here.

Chad Craven & Ben Cannon took the honors with 5 bass weighing a whopping total of 30.22 lbs.
to take 1st Place, 1st Place TWT and 1st Place Big Fish (7.03 lbs.) for a total of $2,086 in prize money!

Craven (L)…Cannon (R)
The 2nd Place team of Todd Sumner & Mike Dinterman caught a good 5 fish limit of bass weighing 18.42 lbs.  and along with winning the 2nd Place TWT they took home $817 in winnings. The 3rd Place Team of Rock &  Eric Goss landed 5 bass weighing 17.63 lbs. taking home $432 in winnings. The Team of Thanos Tsoumbos &
Mike Stephenson won 2nd Place Big Fish (6.78 lbs.) pocketing a total of $204!!! There were a good number of 4, 5 & 6 pounders caught today but putting 5 together was tough!!

101 bass were brought to the scales and most teams weighed fish! Worm rigs, jigs, crankbaits in 10′ to 12′ of water on channel dropoffs seemed to be the lures of choice.
I want to thank Cashion Fishing Rods and all the anglers that participated. Our next tournament will be the PBC Cashion Fishing Rods ‘End of Year’ Team Tournament Bass Fishing Trail  Qualifier #4 at Jordan Lake, Saturday August 24th at Jordan Lake out of Farrington Point Wildlife Ramp. THRIFT GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE, WINS PROFESSIONAL BASS FISHING’S 2019 FLW CUP

Thrift Clinch’s First FLW Cup Victory, Moves to No. 2 on All-Time FLW Leading Money Winner List

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (Aug. 11, 2019) – Pro Bryan Thrift of Shelby, North Carolina, brought a five-bass limit to the stage weighing 10 pounds, 13 ounces, Sunday to claim the title of FLW Cup Champion at the FLW Cup on Lake Hamilton. Thrift, with a three-day total of 15 bass for 38 pounds, 7 ounces, won by a 5-pound, 1-ounce margin over pro Kyle Walters of Grant Valkaria, Florida, who caught a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 33-6, good for $60,000. Sunday’s final weigh-in marked the finale of the 2019 FLW Cup, which featured 52 of the best professional bass anglers from across North America. Thrift led the tournament on all three days of competition and took home the top prize of $300,000.

“I feel like this tournament was an event that everybody thought I would eventually win one day, except for myself,” said Thrift, who pushed his career earnings to more than $3 million dollars and is now the No. 2 all-time leading money winner in FLW history. “I felt like I would eventually get a chance, and I felt like this tournament was the first Cup that I truly had a chance to win. I still can’t believe that I won it, this is an amazing feeling.”

Thrift said that his tournament was a “mixed bag” each day. Of the 15 bass that he weighed in, he caught them on eight different baits, including a buzzbait, a topwater walking bait, a Texas rig, a drop-shot rig, five different crankbaits, a frog, a Damiki Underspin and a Damiki Armor Shad Paddle Tail swimbait.

“Fishing in August, you have to fish everything,” Thrift said. “Every morning I’d start fishing shallow – the bank and shade lines – then I’d fish a few boat docks, and then I’d move out and fish some brush. I even caught some fish that weren’t around anything, just around bait and suspended. I caught them on seven or eight different patterns, and you have to have that in August because two or three of them will let you down.”

The only time that Thrift really stuck a lot of fish in a hurry was Sunday when he pulled up to his first spot and fish were busting the surface over a 200-yard span.

“Today started out actually pretty good,” he said. “I ran to a place that I knew [Bryan] Schmitt was catching them schooling, and I knew he didn’t make the cut. So I went in there, and sure enough they were schooling like crazy. I caught a limit fairly quickly at probably about 8 or 8:30. It didn’t weigh much; maybe 7 or 7 1/2 pounds. And I’m thinking, ‘Shoot, I’ve got all day to upgrade. This is good. We’re good to go.’

“So that helped slow me down and give me confidence. But at about 12:30 I hadn’t had another bite. I had one area that I’d caught most of my weight in in the last hour and a half each day in Hot Springs Creek. So I ran in there at 12:30. I said, ‘If I’m gonna win it, I’m gonna win it back here.’ I didn’t crank the boat until 3:30 and ended up culling three.”

The spot was a small dead-end pocket with deep water running all the way to the back. The bass were pushing bait up not quite to the bank, but close.

“It’s just a shallow flat,” he said of that final spot. “It’s got a lot of shad back there. There were three little brush piles. They weren’t big. They were maybe the size of the hood of a truck; just three small, little brush piles. I’d just rotate between them. One of them, they were kind of schooling around a little bit, and I caught a couple around it while they were up schooling.”

The top 10 pros at the 2019 FLW Cup on Lake Hamilton finished:

1st:          Bryan Thrift, Shelby, N.C., 15 bass, 38-7, $300,000

2nd:         Kyle Walters, Grant Valkaria, Fla., 15 bass, 33-6, $60,000

3rd:          Dakota Ebare, Denham Springs, La., 14 bass, 32-2, $50,000

4th:          Bass Pro Shops pro Jeremy Lawyer, Sarcoxie, Mo., 15 bass, 31-6, $37,500

5th:          Scott Martin, Clewiston, Fla., 15 bass, 31-2, $30,000

6th:          Lowrance pro Austin Felix, Eden Prairie, Minn., 15 bass, 30-6, $24,000

7th:          Joseph Webster, Winfield, Ala., 15 bass, 28-2, $23,000

8th:          Ryan Salzman, Huntsville, Ala., 15 bass, 26-12, $22,000
