Topwater Showdown: Hollow Bodied Frogs Vs. Plastic Buzz Toads

Topwater Showdown: Hollow Bodied Frogs Vs. Plastic Buzz Toads

[print_link]

Both hollow body frogs and solid plastic toads create plenty of topwater excitement but certain situations and conditions dictate when and where these two lures should be fished.

Factoring In The Pressure

Fishing pressure can dictate how to select one bait over the other. When fishing pressure is high you need to really slow down your frog presentation to trigger a reaction bite. A hollow-body frog is the best option then because it allows you to twitch and pause the lure and let it linger longer in the strike zone.

Timing Is Everything With Frogs And Toads

The time of year also determines when to choose a toad or frog. A toad works better earlier in the year from springtime when the fish are starting to move up shallow on to postspawn. Then you can switch over to the hollow body frog during the summertime. You can start throwing the hollow body when the vegetation and pads are fully grown and continue to use the frog until late fall.

Froggin’ Around Cover

The hollow body frog is more of a target-oriented lure for working around isolated cover such as a stump, tree or piling of a dock. The hollow body frog is ideal for fishing cover because you can skip it better and cast it more accurately to targets. You can throw it in thicker cover and walk it, chug it or stop it.

Fishing Toads In Open Water

The toad produces better for covering water quickly along vast expanses of weed flats with pad fields or scattered grass. You can cast the toad a lot farther than a hollow body and then just start reeling steadily. The toad also serves as a substitute for a buzz bait if you want a more subtle presentation in open water. So you can use the toad as a search bait and once you find the fish you can slow down and work the cover in the area with the hollow body frog.

It’s All In The Legs

The different styles of legs on the toads determine how fast or slow you can effectively work the bait on the surface. A toad with paddle legs can be reeled fast to make a lot of commotion on the surface or retrieved at a slow, steady pace to make it gurgle on top. Experiment with these retrieves and let the fish tell you what they prefer.

A hollow-body frog is also effective in open water or along the edges of weeds where you can retrieve it a variety of ways. You can walk the lure similar to walking a Zara Spook, pop it steadily, hop it out of the water or pause it.

You’ll Hook More Bass With Frogs

Strikes on a frog result in more solid hook sets whereas more misses occur when bass bust a toad. The hookup ratio is worse on toads because of the speed that you are reeling in the bait. You can control how fast you are working the hollow body frog and still have it in the strike zone, whereas you have to keep the toad moving for it to create action. Missed strikes also occur sometimes because grass gets in the way when bass are charging after the toad. The fish open their mouth and hit the grass which hits the toad and knocks it out of the way so they miss it. You get a better hook set with a hollow body frog because most strikes occur when the lure is in the holes of vegetation or open water next to the weeds.

When To Set The Hook On Toads And Frogs

Figuring out when to set the hook with a frog or toad is a matter of timing. You can use a sweeping hook set with a frog even though your rod is usually positioned closer to the water while working the lure. Set the hook immediately when a bass engulfs your frog in open water, but wait until you feel the weight of the fish on your line before setting the hook when a bass strikes in thick grass.

Walk The Frog And Burn The Toad

When walking a hollow body frog, make sure the frog has disappeared after a bass strikes and then quickly reel the slack out of your line before setting the hook. You should also delay your hook set after a slurp bite, which occurs when a bass slurps up the frog without creating a surface disturbance.

Waiting For A Hookset

A delayed hook set also ensures better connections when you wind in a toad. When a bass bites the toad you should crank down two or three times on the reel and then you set the hook with a hard jerk of the rod. If bass continues to short strike the toad, switch to the frog for a slower presentation so the fish can catch up to the lure easier.

Fished in the right situations, both the frog and toad can provide a lot of topwater fun in open water or around cover.

ROME’S HENDERSON WINS $15K AT INAUGURAL DEE ZEE FLW/KBF CUP PRESENTED BY YAKATTACK ON LAKE OUACHITA

Georgia Angler Bests Field of 72 Kayakers in First FLW/KBF Cup

[print_link]

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (Aug. 10, 2019) – Kayak angler Clint Henderson of Rome, Georgia, caught, photographed and released a two-day total of 157¾ inches from Lake Ouachita to best the 72-angler field and win the inaugural Dee Zee FLW/KBF Kayak Cup at Lake Ouachita presented by YakAttack Saturday. For his win, Henderson earned the top prize of $15,000.

Henderson almost didn’t fish the event – he said he’s “in the negative on PTO balance” at work – and Navionics study on his phone was about as much early scouting as he could do.

“We found the spot on the map that had the stuff we like to fish back home, contour- and cover-wise,” said Henderson. “We got on the water there, and I got to looking at my map. I saw this spot that, when I first pulled up on it, that MEGA Imaging just lit up. I was telling myself there was no way that was all bass.”

He was wrong. Henderson had found a massive school of bass that hung around the same area all week. After catching some in practice, he decided to leave the school undisturbed.

“I caught three good fish in practice easy, quick. I was like, ‘We need to go. We need to get out of here. It’s special here.’”

What Henderson had found was a section of the lake with a main-channel ledge in 12 to 18 feet of water. For whatever reason, that particular ledge was a favorite summering spot for some big Ouachita largemouths.

“I caught them all dragging a junebug creature bait,” Henderson went on to say. “I had some fish on other lures on day one, but today was different. I was just dragging that thing, dragging it slow. You could feel that thing coming through the school of fish, popping the line.”

THRIFT EXTENDS LEAD AT DAY TWO OF PROFESSIONAL BASS FISHING’S FLW CUP

THRIFT EXTENDS LEAD AT DAY TWO OF PROFESSIONAL BASS FISHING’S FLW CUP

Link to HD video of Day Two leader Bryan Thrift Weighing in On-Stage

[print_link]

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (Aug. 10, 2019) – Pro Bryan Thrift of Shelby, North Carolina, crossed the stage with a five-bass limit weighing 12 pounds, 7 ounces, for a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 27-10, to lead Day Two of the FLW Cup on Lake Hamilton. Thrift now holds a 1-pound, 8-ounce lead over pro Kyle Walters of Grant Valkaria, Florida, who weighed five bass weighing 12-5 – for a two-day total of 10 bass for 26-2 – in the championship tournament featuring 52 of the world’s best professional bass anglers competing for a top prize of $300,000.

“Today was a long, trying day, but that’s the way I like it,” said Thrift, who has now made the top-10 cut in 10 of his 13 career FLW Cup appearances. “We like when it’s tough fishing at the Cup. I only had two fish at 12:30. I ended up getting six keeper bites, though – two good ones and three decent ones – but I have no idea what’s going to happen tomorrow.

“I ran a lot of the same stuff and a lot of new stuff today, and I caught my fish on most of the same baits as I did yesterday. But I didn’t catch any topwater fish today,” Thrift continued. “All of my fish came on a big worm and stuff like that in brush. I tried, but I just couldn’t get the topwater bite going. I’m going to try that again in the morning and see if I can get lucky. In my mind, that’s what I have to have to win.”

Thrift’s accomplishments and accolades in the sport of professional bass-fishing has long put him in discussion amongst fans and his peers as being one of, if not the, best of all-time. He has six career FLW Tour wins, 42 top-10 finishes and more than $2.7 million dollars in career earnings. One trophy that has eluded him thus far in his career, though, is the FLW Cup. Thrift is optimistic that he can slam the door Sunday.

“If I can catch a couple early, that would really calm me down and settle me in and give me the confidence to slow down and fish each place thoroughly,” Thrift went on to say. “I’m not going to die on any one pattern. I’m going to run around and fish and try to make the best of it, and hopefully I can stumble into a few.”

The top 10 pros that advanced to the final day of competition on Lake Hamilton are:

1st:          Bryan Thrift, Shelby, N.C., 10 bass, 27-10

2nd:         Kyle Walters, Grant Valkaria, Fla., 10 bass, 26-2

Briarwood Christian Goes Wire-To-Wire To Win Back-To-Back High School Championships

Briarwood Christian Goes Wire-To-Wire To Win Back-To-Back High School Championships

[print_link]

PARIS, Tenn. — Grayson Morris and Tucker Smith completed a wire-to-wire win on Saturday to secure their second consecutive victory in the Mossy Oak Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.

The duo, representing Briarwood Christian School of Birmingham, Ala., caught a three-day total of 15 bass that weighed 50 pounds, 1 ounce to earn a landmark win on Kentucky Lake here in the northwest corner of the Volunteer State.

The victory marks the first time a high school duo repeated as national champion.

The winners earned a $4,500 a scholarship, which will go toward their college education. Morris, 18, recently graduated from Briarwood and will compete for the University of Montevallo (Ala.) bass fishing team. Smith, 17, is a rising senior at Briarwood.

Morris and Smith staked an early lead in this year’s championship. Their limit of five bass on Thursday that weighed 19-11 was the heaviest of the tournament, and it gave them a lead of almost 2 pounds on the 300-boat field. They followed with an equally sound 17-11 limit on Friday which increased their margin to more than 4 pounds.

Morris and Smith came back to the pack on Saturday with a limit that weighed 12-11. Things could have been much worse for them, however, as they didn’t complete their limit until there was only 15 minutes of fishing time remaining. That followed the same anxiety-building pattern the duo faced all week, though late bites each day carried them to the championship.

“We had three fish at 10 o’clock today, which was better than the first three days,” Morris said. “So we thought we were making some progress. Tucker caught our fourth fish about an hour later, but then it just shut down completely.”

To catch their fifth keeper, Morris and Smith moved to an area with moving current. The change of scenery was key, and with only minutes to go, Morris caught the team’s fifth bass — a 3-pounder he boated with a 3/8-ounce jig (green pumpkin with a black/blue trailer). A moment later, Smith caught another bass that gave the team its only upgrade of the day.

“It wasn’t much of a cull, but it eased our nerves a little bit,” Smith said.

The Briarwood team certainly needed those final strikes, because Mercedes Ellis and Gage Sherrod of Tennessee’s Henry County High were ready to apply pressure at the scales. The locals caught the big bag on Saturday, a 15-4 limit, that left them a mere 1-12 out of first place in the final standings.

Morris and Smith spent most of the week fishing in the back of the same creek they mastered en route to the 2018 title. They threw dark-colored jigs and chatterbaits and caught their best bass in water as shallow as 2 feet. They worked the creek banks incessantly, trying to excite bites. There weren’t many of them this week, but Morris and Smith eventually found the right ones.

“We weren’t going to leave anything out there,” Smith said. “If we were going to finish second, we weren’t going down without a fight.”

Kentucky Lake was difficult on anglers this week. Only four of the final 12 teams caught limits Saturday, and three of the 12 didn’t catch a weighable fish. On Friday, 129 duos failed to weigh a fish, and on Thursday, 97 teams zeroed.

While many teams struggled, Ellis and Sherrod used their knowledge of the lake to amass 48-5 over three days. They weighed the heaviest bags on both Friday and Saturday.

Rounding out the top five teams are Tyler Finley and Hunter Jones, Mount Pleasant (Tenn.), third, 41-10; Christopher Capdeboscq and Sam Acosta, Northlake Christian School (La.), fourth, 37-14; and Daelyn Whaley and Lilly Smith,  Abbeville High(S.C.), fifth, 32-8.

B.A.S.S. awarded nearly $24,000 in college scholarships to the Top 12 teams in the championship.  In addition, Bethel University offered more than $500,000 in total scholarship money to the top 24 anglers should they decide to fish at the school located in nearby McKenzie, Tenn.

Taj White and Ethan Ryan of the Arizona High School B.A.S.S. Nation won $875 in scholarship money for catching the Big Bass of the Tournament – a 6-14 largemouth they weighed Thursday.

Morris and Smith were awarded an additional $875 in scholarship funds for having the Big Bag of the Tournament. The money was originally awarded to Hunter Owens, a Natchitoches Central High School student (La.) who was part of the tandem that finished fourth in last year’s high school championship.

Owens was killed in a car accident earlier this year and B.A.S.S. wanted to award the unused scholarship to a deserving team. It was decided before the 2019 championship to present the money to the duo with the heaviest bag this week on Kentucky Lake.

The Carroll County (Tenn.) Tourism Authority, Henry County (Tenn.) and Bethel University hosted the championship.

Should You Be Adding A Trailer To Your Spinnerbait and Buzzbaits?

[print_link]

Spinnerbaits and buzzbaits generate enough flash and vibration to trigger strikes from bass most of the time. However, there are times when adding a trailer will enhance your chances of getting more bites.

Here is our breakdown on when to add a trailer when fishing a spinnerbait or buzzbait.

I rarely add a trailer to a spinnerbait when fishing in clear water because I want the lure to have a smaller profile. I occasionally add a single-or twin-tail plastic grub to the rear of my spinnerbait when I wake the blade bait across the surface in clear water during the fall. The trailers add buoyancy to the spinnerbait making it easier to wake the lure without having to reel at a high speed. I also like to add a plastic trailer to my spinnerbait for slow-rolling the lure at night during the summertime. When pork baits were popular I used an Uncle Josh split-tail eel as my spinnerbait trailer, but I have switched to a plastic split-tail trailer now. I like the split-tail trailer because it adds some bulk to the spinnerbait to make it a larger profile bait for bass to see in the dark. The split-tail trailer also produces less tail action than the single- or twin-tail grubs, which tend to overpower the slow motion I want on my spinnerbait.

The best water conditions for adding spinnerbait trailers are stained to muddy water. I favor using plastic trailers with plenty of tail action, so my choices are usually single- or double-tail plastic grubs or 7-inch ribbon tail plastic worms. Bass might short strike a spinnerbait with a full 7-inch plastic worm attached so I cut the worm in half to create a shorter trailer with a lot of tail action. With that setup I have more bass attacking the blade bait than nipping at the plastic trailer.

I never used trailers on buzz baits until a skirt on one of my buzzers fell apart and I decided to replace the skirt with a solid body plastic toad. The toad’s tail action enhanced my buzz bait and increased my catch that day, so now I frequently replace the skirts of my buzzers with plastic toads. Another good plastic trailer for buzz baits is a solid body swimbait. When attaching a trailer to either a spinnerbait or buzzbait make sure the trailer and lure’s blade match. Using a large trailer with a small bladed bait will cause the lure to roll too much.

THRIFT LEADS DAY ONE OF PROFESSIONAL BASS FISHING’S FLW CUP

Bossier City’s LeBrun Just 3 Ounces Behind in Second Place

[print_link]

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (Aug. 9, 2019) – Fifty-two of the best bass anglers in the world began their three-day competition for a top cash award of $300,000 at the 24th annual FLW Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing, on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Friday.

FLW Tour stalwart Bryan Thrift of Shelby, North Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 3 ounces to take the early lead after Day One of the three day event. Thrift now holds a slim 3-ounce lead over pro Nick LeBrun of Bossier City, Louisiana, who caught five bass weighing 15 pounds even, good for second place.

“One of the cool things about having the Cup in August every year is that you never know what’s going to happen, and you can usually throw practice out the window. That’s what I did today and I caught fish off of stuff that I had never even fished in practice,” said Thrift, who has never won an FLW Cup but has 9 top-10 finishes in FLW Cup competition – most in Tour history. “I think I ended up catching 20 to 25 fish, steady all day – one bite here, one bite there – on around 10 different baits.”

Thrift declined to mention any bait specifics at this point of the event, but did mention throwing a buzzbait – as did the majority of competitors. Of the five bass that Thrift brought to the stage, he said that three came shallow and two came from brush piles offshore.

“I’m flying by the seat of my pants, doing a little of everything,” Thrift said. “I’ve got 20 different Fitzgerald rods rigged up on my deck and I’m throwing at everything that I see.”

Although an early lead is certainly favorable, Thrift acknowledged the fact that he still has work left to do in order to make the final-day top-10 cut.

“I’m not going to count my chickens before they’re hatched, and I expect the fishing to get tougher tomorrow,” Thrift went on to say. “I’m hoping to go out tomorrow and catch 10 pounds. That was my goal for today – a 10-pound bag – and I’d be happy with that tomorrow.”

The top 20 pros after Day One on Lake Hamilton are:

1st:          Bryan Thrift, Shelby, N.C., five bass, 15-3

2nd:         Nick LeBrun, Bossier City, La., five bass, 15-0

3rd:          Kyle Walters, Grant Valkaria, Fla., five bass, 13-13

4th:          Jordan Osborne, Longview, Texas, five bass, 13-11

5th:          Lowrance pro Austin Felix, Eden Prairie, Minn., five bass, 13-5

6th:          Bryan Schmitt, Deale, Md., five bass, 12-15

7th:          Joel Willert, Prior Lake, Minn., five bass, 12-13

8th:          Billy McCaghren, Mayflower, Ark., five bass, 12-4

Defending Champions Maintain Lead On Day 2 Of High School Championship

PARIS, Tennessee – Two hurdles cleared and only one more to go for Grayson Morris and Tucker Smith at the Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.

The tournament’s defending champions maintained their lead on the 300-team field by catching a limit of five bass Friday that weighed 17 pounds, 11 ounces. That gave them a two-day total of 37-6, which is more than 4 pounds heavier than their nearest challenger for the championship.

Morris and Smith are representing Briarwood Christian School, which is located in Birmingham, Ala.  Morris, 18, recently graduated from the school, and Smith, 17, is a rising senior.

Though they stayed atop the leaderboard, Morris and Smith struggled again on Friday to find keeper bites.

They had only one bass in the live well at 11 a.m., which had them concerned. They aren’t alone, as Kentucky Lake has been difficult for many teams to read this week. On Friday, 129 duos failed to weigh a fish, and on Thursday, 97 teams met a similar fate.

Morris and Smith caught their fifth keeper just before 3 p.m. Friday and headed to Paris Landing State Park for weigh-in, confident they had enough to hang onto the lead.

“We were pretty relaxed this morning, just wanting to go out and have fun,” Morris said. “But we were boat 300 today, so I had some butterflies waiting to go. When we didn’t get a bite until 10:30 a.m., I was like ‘Oh no.’ We wound up only getting a bite like every two hours.”

“You try not to think about it. You just have to go out and fish,” Smith said.

The duo is hoping to catch a limit much earlier on Saturday, but they’re prepared for another day of hard work to keep their lead and win consecutive national titles.

“We’ve just got to keep grinding,” Morris said. “We’ll keep the trolling motor in the water.”

Smith said they encountered some angling pressure on Friday, but that’s shouldn’t be the case on Saturday with the field cut to 12 after the Day 2 weigh-in.

“It’s a new day,” Smith said.

While some teams have fought to figure out Kentucky Lake, Mercedes Ellis and Gage Sherrod are not one of them.

Ellis and Sherrod, who attend Henry County (Tenn.) High School just a few miles down U.S. 79 from Paris Landing State Park, caught a 19-4 limit on Friday, which was the heaviest of the day. Their two-day total of 33-1 has them in second place overall.

The locals focused on brush piles through the first two days of the tournament and plan to do so again with a championship in their sights.

“We know a ton of spots here,” Sherrod said. “Every day we’ve fished in practice and in the tournament, we’ve averaged about 16 or 17 pounds. When you have all these people from around the country, some of them get on the fish more than others. We know the bites will be slow, but we know the fish are there and we know how to catch them. We just have to stay patient.”

Ellis had the big bass of the day – a 6-5 kicker she pulled from a pocket that had sticks to provide structure and a ditch draining into it.

“Everyone definitely heard me (yelling) when I caught it,” Ellis said. “There was a lot of excitement.”

Daelyn Whaley and Lilly Smith from Abbeville (S.C.) High are in third place with 32-8 over two days. They are fishing shallow water; a strength they learned at home.

Whaley and Smith struggled, too, on Friday morning, but their favorite spot turned on again around noon, and they soon had a limit in the livewell.

“It’s the spot, but it’s the presentation, too,” Whaley said of her team’s success. “We don’t fish offshore. Even if they’re catching offshore, we don’t like to. We’re doing what we like to do, and that helps a lot. Also, we had to push and work our way in there. It’s hard work, but it’s been worth it.”

Whaley has fished in four consecutive national championships and she’s now made the top 12 in three of those years, and with three different partners, to boot.

Smith said she thinks a national title is possible.

“We could have kept catching them today, but we didn’t to pressure them too bad,” Smith said. “When we thought we had enough to qualify for (Saturday,) we decided to leave some for tomorrow.”

Each of the 300 teams competing in the championship qualified via four different Bassmaster High School Series events this year or their respective state team trails.

A total of $22,000 in scholarship awards will be split among the Top 12 teams in the championship. The winning duo will earn a $4,500 gift that will help fund each angler’s college education.

Taj White and Ethan Ryan of the Arizona high School B.A.S.S. Nation still lead for Big Bass of the Tournament with the 6-14 largemouth they caught Thursday.

The third and final day of competition will begin with a 6 a.m. CT take-off from Paris Landing State Park. Weigh-in will begin at 2 p.m., also from the state park.

The Carroll County (Tenn.) Tourism Authority, Henry County (Tenn.) and Bethel University are hosting the event.

Waterproof Bags for All Your Essentials

Technologically advanced GILL Race Team Bags complement the outdoors lifestyle

[print_link]

Buford, GA (August 9, 2019) – We all wish we had the perfect bag to store our essential items for fishing or a simple day on the water with friends and family. Well, look no further than Gill’s new Race Team Bag Max (90-liter) and Race Team Mini (10-liter), building off the popularity of the original 30-liter Race Team Bag. All are the perfect accessory for keeping essential goods safe and dry, and easily stowable for use on any watercraft. And while their design might recall the classic duffel bag so many of us have stuffed with raingear, extra clothing and fishing gear, the similarities end there…

For starters, both bags are manufactured of a 100% PVC-free puncture-resistant, waterproof tarpaulin fabric for the ultimate in protection from the very real world of waves, water and weather. Stitch-free, high frequency welded seams only complete the Race Team Bag’s waterproofness, as well as secure Velcro fastening and a roll-down closure for a watertight seal.

In terms of sizing, GILL has everyone’s bases covered. Available in an extremely roomy 90-liter Max version as well as the slimmer 10-liter version, you’ll find exactly the right size, whether it’s to pack for a week-long adventure or a simple afternoon junket.

Gill didn’t leave aesthetics out of the picture, either. A very attractive design in total, the Race Team Max is available in a flattering graphite, while the Mini comes in graphite, tango, or blue.

Morris And Tucker In Familiar Spot, Leading Bassmaster High School National Championship

Morris And Tucker In Familiar Spot, Leading Bassmaster High School National Championship

[print_link]

PARIS, Tenn. — Excuse Grayson Morris and Tucker Smith if they had a case of déjà vu on Thursday at the Mossy Oak Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.

After all, they’ve led this tournament before.

Morris and Smith, the defending high school national champions, caught a five-bass limit Thursday that weighed 19 pounds, 11 ounces. That gave the duo from Briarwood Christian School in Birmingham, Ala., nearly a 2-pound lead in the tournament being held this week on Kentucky Lake.

A whopping 300 teams from 243 different high schools are competing in the three-day championship. They represent 40 different states and one Canadian province.

None of the teams were as impressive as Morris and Smith on Thursday. But still, the leaders said they struggled to pinpoint bass on Kentucky Lake. They weren’t alone, as 97 of the 300 teams didn’t catch a weighable fish.

“We only had six bites today, but I guess they were the right ones,” Morris said. “We got our sixth bite at 1 o’clock, and we had to weigh-in at 2.”

Morris and Smith buzzed shorelines all day, hoping to spark the bass into action. It was a frantic pace, they said, but it paid off at the scales. The biggest bass in their bag weighed 5-12, and the other four fish averaged more than 3 pounds apiece.

“We were fishing shallow,” said Smith, who caught the 5-12 kicker. “I saw it from about 10 feet away … I thought it might be a carp, but if it was a bass, I knew it was a big one.”

The 19-11 total was heavier than any bag Morris and Smith caught on their way to last year’s title. Their best bag in the 2018 tournament weighed 18-9, and they totaled 50-2 over three days to earn the win.

“This takes a lot of pressure off,” Smith said of taking an early lead. “We caught 16-10 last year on Day 1 and were in fifth place.”

Morris and Smith said they’ll stick to their game plan Friday. It’s worked for two consecutive years, so why not?

“That’s all we can do, is just go fishing,’ Morris said. “And we’ll keep doing what we do best. It’s gotten us the right bites so far.”

Daelyn Whaley and Lilly Smith of Abbeville (S.C.) High School are in second place with five bass weighing 17-15. The girls thought their bag weighed less, so they were pleasantly surprised by their Day 1 total.

Whaley caught a 5-9 bass that anchored the Abbeville catch.

“I skipped up under a hanging limb,” Whaley said. “I saw him swim out and when I set the hook, I saw his big head. I said, ‘Get the net!’ and it swam right into it.”

Whaley’s first cousin, Carter McNeil of Bethel University, teamed with Cole Floyd to win the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops last week on Lake Chickamauga, also in Tennessee.

Rounding out the Top 5 teams on Thursday were Lake Norsworthy and William Burt of the Brandon Bulldog Bass Club (Miss.), third, 15-4; Tyler Finley and Hunter Jones, Mount Pleasant (Tenn.), fourth, 15-2; Alex Curington and Bre Arnold, Good Hope Fishing Team (Ala.), fifth, 14-4.

Nation only weighed one bass Thursday, but it was the heaviest of the day. Their 6-14 largemouth puts them in 62nd place overall.

Friday’s competition will begin with a 6 a.m. CT takeoff from Paris Landing State Park. Weigh-in will begin at 2 p.m., also from the state park. The field will be trimmed to the Top 12 teams after Friday’s weigh-in is complete.

The Carroll County (Tenn.) Tourism Authority, Henry County (Tenn.) and Bethel University are hosting the event.
