Start Feeling (Bottom) Better With Tungsten Ned Rigs

Start Feeling (Bottom) Better With Tungsten Ned Rigs

The Ned Rig has become the rage of finesse bass fishing in recent years. Outdoor writer Ned Kehde invented the rig by pinching off a piece of a stickworm and sticking it on a small jighead to create a small bait that is irresistible to even the most finicky bass. Since then lure manufacturers have developed the mini-version of the stickworm, like the Sukoshi Bug and a jighead with a flat rear section for snugging the worm tight to the jighead to make a compact, streamlined Ned Rig.

The original Ned Rig jigheads were made from lead, but the new Heavy Metal Tungsten Jighead offers you a more sensitive alternative for a Ned Rig. The tungsten jighead has some key advantages over the lead jighead to help you catch more fish.

Advantages Of Using Tungsten

I have used the Ned Rig to catch smallmouth bass on Ozark streams close to my home and the guides on my home waters of Lake of the Ozarks frequently set up their clients with the finesse lure when the bass fishing gets tough. It is a great rig for beginners because it catches all kinds of fish including bass, sunfish, and trout. The rig is also ideal for fishing farm ponds, strip pits, creeks, and other small waters.

Tungsten Ned Head

Tungsten steel is denser in weight than lead so the tungsten jighead can be made smaller yet weigh the same as a lead jighead. This allows you to fish an even smaller profile of a Ned Rig for tricking bass in heavily pressured waters. Tungsten produces more sound underwater than lead. So when your tungsten jighead bumps into a rocky bottom the sound will draw bass to your Ned Rig.

Tungsten During Tournaments

Tungsten Ned Head

Many of the touring pros have switched to tungsten because its increased sensitivity over lead helps them feel bites better and determine whether they are fishing a hard or soft bottom. Match a Tungsten Ned Rig with a fluorocarbon leader and braid main line and you will have the most sensitive combination for detecting those mushy bites of pressured bass.

Tungsten Is Better For The Environment

Tungsten Ned Head

Tungsten does not have the toxic characteristics of lead so you will be using a more environmentally friendly Ned Rig with the Tungsten Ned Head. Some states have banned the use of lead fishing tackle so you stay out of trouble with the law in those states if you fish a Ned Rig with the tungsten jighead.

Alabama Angler Logan Takes Lead At Bassmaster Central Open On Mississippi River

Alabama Angler Logan Takes Lead At Bassmaster Central Open On Mississippi River

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Wes Logan of Springville, Ala., found a falling Mississippi River presenting a very different scenario than he saw in practice. But adjusting to the conditions allowed him to catch a five-bass limit of 16 pounds, 10 ounces to lead Day 1 of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open.

“I was just blessed today; I wasn’t on anything, but I’d get a bite and it would be a 3-pounder,” he said.

With the river dropping significantly since the weekend, Logan said he struggled to find consistency. Doing so required him to leverage the flow — without much company.

“I got here on Saturday and started practicing, and I think it’s dropped 3 1/2 feet since Saturday,” he said. “Obviously, it’s the Mississippi River, so you catch them on a frog, but most of those places are dry ground now.

“This really screwed up my plan from practice, so I just went on a whim. I think I figured something out, but I think it’s more that I got into an area without a lot of boat pressure. When the water fell, there are only so many places they’re going to get on and those places are getting pounded.”

Logan said he’s looking for the hardest current he can find. Moving water always bodes well for bass anglers, but the extremely swift areas, he said, delivered the biggest bites.

“I only had seven bites, but it seems to me that you got better quality bites,” Logan said. “Tomorrow, I could get two or three bites. But if I get one, I think it will be a better-quality fish.”

Efficiency and proper presentation can be challenging when fishing heavy current, but Logan made sure he was properly prepared for a day of water resistance.

“The key is a good trolling motor battery,” he said. “I took an extra one for my Minn Kota Ultrex and switched it over about 1 o’clock. At home on the Coosa River, sometimes you can drift with it, but here it’s way too hard to float with it because you’re flying too fast.

“You have to go against it and most people’s batteries have been done by 11-12 o’clock, and then you’re dead in the water.”

Logan said he caught fish on reaction baits and plastics. Neither option outperformed the other, but Logan noted that he determined a color preference.

“If the bait just happens to flow in front of a fish’s face, he’ll bite it,” he said. “I fished five places and got one of my keepers per spot.”

Kenta Kimura of Livingston, Texas, is in second place with 15-1. He said he started out fishing the same types of banks most of the field is targeting. But his day came together quickly once he figured out a key adjustment.

“About 10 o’clock, I moved a little farther off the bank,” Kimura said. “I think because the water level dropped, the bigger ones moved offshore. I know what I have to do tomorrow.”

Kimura said he caught his fish on a mix of swimbaits, Texas-rigged worms and a 3/8-ounce jig with a chunk trailer.

Kazuki Kitajama of Orlando, Fla., is in third place with 14-15. He said he dealt with the changing water level by staying in Pool 8 and picking apart the area he knew.

“I caught my fish on a frog over grass in an area with a little bit of current,” he said. “I caught fish all day; I got about 10 keepers.”

Kimura is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with a 5-8.

Howard Lee of Brooklyn Park, Minn., leads the co-angler division with 9-12. He caught all of his fish on the hand-tied swim jigs he makes. Lee used a variety of trailers and fished banks with grass.

“When we got into areas of current, smallies will sit in or near that current,” he said. “Slow, lift, slow was the best retrieve.”

Thaddaeus Vettrus of Chippewa Falls, Wis., holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with a 4-4.

Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. CT at Veterans Freedom Park. The weigh-in will be held at the park at 2 p.m.

The event is hosted by Explorelacrosse.com.

Bryan College Uses Homegrown Knowledge To Take Lead At Bassmaster College Championship

[print_link]

DAYTON, Tenn. — Bryan College’s Cole Sands and Conner Dimauro know Lake Chickamauga about as well as anyone, and they proved it Thursday on Day 1 of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro.

The duo caught five bass that weighed 24 pounds, 9 ounces, which gave them more than a 2-pound lead on the other 115 teams competing this week in the southeast corner of the Volunteer State.

Bryan College is located across the street from Dayton Municipal Park where takeoffs and weigh-ins are being held during the championship. The park abuts the trophy-bass lake and both anglers said their familiarity with the area clearly helped their fortunes Thursday.

“I spend my time out here,” Sands said. “It’s not a coincidence and I’m not gonna deny we were blessed today. But we had a really tough practice and didn’t know what we’d catch. We thought we could catch about 15 pounds and that was about it.”

The difference between a lackluster practice and a sensational first day was the 7-15 kicker bass that Sands caught Thursday. It tied for the heaviest bass of the day, and along with some other quality keepers that Dimauro boated, it was more than enough to give the locals the lead.

But as both anglers said, they didn’t think they were on the right fish to make that happen. To take advantage of any opportunities, Sands and Dimauro kept a dozen rods on the deck most of the day. At one point, the five bass they had in the livewell had been caught on five different lures.

The “kitchen sink” approach worked.

“We culled a bigger bag today than we had all of practice,” Dimauro said. “But as tough as conditions were for us, we saved a lot of stuff.”

Sands said he and Dimauro will continue to “fish the conditions.”

“When we blasted off today, we knew where we were going to start and how we did after that was how we were to go from there,” Sands said. “That is an advantage of knowing the lake … It’s not like we’re catching just deep or just shallow. It’s a little bit of everything.”

Carter McNeil and Cole Floyd of Bethel University are in second place with a five-bass limit that weighed 22-6. They won the Bassmaster College Series tournament on Bull Shoals Lake in Arkansas earlier this year, but now they’re after a bigger prize.

Like the tournament leaders, McNeil and Floyd compete regularly on Chickamauga, which is a four-hour drive from McKenzie, Tenn., where Bethel is located. But they too struggled in practice until finding their groove Thursday.

“We just expanded and fished a bunch of new water today,” Floyd said. “It’s just one here and one there. It’s not a big group of fish.”

McNeil is confident he and Floyd will have to produce another big bag if they want to survive the cut to the Top 12 following Friday’s weigh-in.

“This lake is capable of producing some really big bass,” McNeil said. “If we’re consistent, I think we can make it to the last day. But like Cole was saying, the fish are just scattered. We could go tomorrow and catch average fish. We’ll just stick to our game plan and see if we can do it again tomorrow.”

Landon Siggers and Logan Reynolds of Wytheville (Va.) Community College are third with 20-6, while Jarrett Brown and Elliot Torode of the University of Montevallo (Ala.) are fourth with 19-14. The University of Tennessee’s Robert Gee and Saxton Long are fifth with 19-12.

Brandon Mann of Arkansas Tech caught an 8-2 kicker on Day 1 that currently holds the title of Big Bass of the tournament. Mann and his partner Hunter Bryant are currently in 12th place.

The Top 4 teams (eight anglers) at the championship will advance to the Bassmaster College Classic Bracket to be held Aug. 27-29 at Watts Bar Lake, also in Tennessee. They will compete individually in a head-to-head format there with a berth in the 2020 Bassmaster Classic at Alabama’s Lake Guntersville going to the winning angler.

Day 2 of the College Series National Championship will begin Friday with takeoff from the Dayton Boat Dock at 6:40 a.m. ET. Weigh-in is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Point Park.

Bryan College, the City of Dayton and Fish Dayton are hosting the national championship.

Picture:: Jeff Marsh from Smith Mtn. lake with a nice summer striper caught this week.

OVERVIEW: Fishing has improved the past few weeks. Water temperature has been extremely high. Night fishing for bass has been good the past few weeks. Most species of fish are in their summer patterns.. Look for striper fishing to continue to improve! Water temperature will be in the middle 80’s to near 90.

Largemouth Bass- Fishing will be good this month. Best lures will be Neko rigs, drop shot rigs, crank baits, shaky heads, Carolina rigs, large plastic worms and top water lures. Most largemouth bass will be caught on points, ledges rock piles, brush piles and deep docks. Best depths will be from the surface to 25 feet deep. Largemouth bass will feed mainly at night this month. Points, rocks, stumps and brush are a key factor to finding bass this month. Please release the bass quickly during hot months.

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing should be fair. Best areas will be rocks, ledges, and main channel points. Best lures will be Ned rigs, hair jigs, drop shot rigs and Carolina rigs. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Most smallmouth bass will be suspended around schools of shad. Cloudy days are good times to try your luck! Light line will increase your chances to catch smallmouth bass. Night fishing will be fair.

Striped Bass- Fishing will be good. Stripers will be caught in the lower to mid sections of the lake and in
the larger creeks. Best lures will be swim baits, top water lures, jigging spoons and Zoom flukes fished on 1/2 to 3/4 oz. lead heads. The best depths will be from near the surface to 80 feet deep. Vertical jigging is one of the best methods to catch stripers in the hot months. Try to find areas with the largest concentrations of baitfish. Fishing at night will be poor this month. Some schools of stripers will surface early morning and late afternoon this month. Live bait fished on planner boards and down lines are also good methods this month.

Crappie- Fishing for crappie will be poor this month. They will be found 15 to 30 feet deep. Best areas will be in the main creeks around docks, fallen trees, stumps and brush piles in the mid to upper parts of the lake. Small live minnows and 1 ½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/16 to 1/8 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month.

TIP OF THE Month: Hot water temperatures will cause the fish to slow their metabolism down. Fishing during the early morning, late afternoon and night is usually the best time to fish. To avoid the boat traffic and the hot sun you should try fishing at night! Make sure you wear your life jacket and never fish alone at night! Make sure your running lights are on after dark! You can never be too careful when boating. Remember to please practice catch and release! PLEASE TAKE A KID FISHING!

Useful Bass Fishing Tips for Professionals & New Anglers

0

[print_link]

Whether you are a professional or a new angler, you may want to enjoy a lazy afternoon on a lake with your family fishing bass. But catching bass is difficult. Some believe that it is a challenging free time activity, not like the enjoyable kayaking. However, things will be easier if you are familiar with bass fishing tips. Let’s know some useful bass fishing techniques.

How to Fish for Bass
Whether professionals or beginners, anglers want to catch large and lots of bass. We spent a good amount of time researching and testing different bass fishing techniques and then compiled some great tips here. Below is our list of tips:

Get a cover
When it comes to bass fishing, the best way to catch bass is known bass behaviors. One tendency of bass is they like to hit the target while hiding from a cover. It is because they believe a cover will conceal them. So, they surreptitiously swoop on prey and feed on. So, the first thing you need to do is find a cover, for example, boat, dock, wood, or rock.

Know what type of fish bass feed on
Bass is a predatory type of fish. They have an extensive list of diet from shad to baby ducks. At this point, you need to know what type of fish bass feed on in your local water body. If they like to attack and consume shad hurl swimbait or crankbait towards them to catch them.
If they like to forage on small minnows using dropshot rig will be a good idea.

Be an adaptable fisherman
Success in bass fishing depends on locations. You may catch a lot of bass in your area. But things will be different if you move and try to catch bass in a new location. In a new area, you may end up your day of fishing without catching a bass. So, if you want to become a professional bass fisherman, do not limit your fishing area only to your area. Expand your fishing area to other areas.

Understand different weather conditions
Weather condition greatly influences bass behavior. The behavior of bass differs markedly in cloudy and sunny weather. In an overcast day, bass becomes active, and they like to chase fish on their own. So, in damp weather condition, use moving baits, for example, chatter baits and spinnerbaits.
On a sunny day, bass becomes lazy. They want that prey will come in front of their mouth. To stimulate their hunting desire, use bouncing bait to lure them.

Monitor water temperature
The temperature of the water varies depending on location and time of year. In cold water, the bass is not so active. So, use slow-moving lures. On the other hand, in warm water, bass becomes more active. Consequently, use an aggressive lure in warmer water to catch bass.

Monitor wind speed
In Bass fishing movement of the wind is an important factor. Gusty wind makes bass fishing difficult. For example, if the wind speed is 15 mile per hour, you will have a difficult day on the lake. It is because excessive wind speed makes great turbulence in water forcing bass not to prey on your lure. Go for bass fishing when wind speed calms down.

Use red color lure or bait

Since bass has a tendency of attacking injured bait, use red color bait to fool them. Red color crankbait tempted the bass to bite the lure and fall into prey.

Use sharp hooks
Jaws of bass are bony. Use sharp hooks, so the hooks easily penetrate into the jaws of bass. It is important to sharpen the hook before and after the bass fishing.

Fish in shallow water in spring
During spring, bass tends to stay in shallow water because spring is the time when they lay eggs, and they stay nearby. So, in spring, fish in shallow water that will increase your probability of finding the fish.

Use bait based on the season:
Depending on the season, the bass has a different appetite. They like to eat crawfish at the beginning of the year while shad during summer. So, the simple rule is using peach color lure early in the season and silver baits or chrome in summer.

Storm effects on bass fishing:
Bass tend to bite more on baits before a storm hit your area. So, it is a good idea to go for bass fishing before the arrival of a storm. However, after the storm is over, bass is less likely to attack the lure. So, it is a good idea to stay home when the storm finishes its ravage.

Do some research
We live in a time when plenty of information is available on the Internet. You can find an important piece of information in a few seconds. Our last tip is to spend some time on researching in bass fishing before you head to your next fishing trips.

Conclusion:
Bass fishing is somewhat different than other types of fishing. It is a good idea to gather the necessary knowledge before going for bass fishing. We hope our above bass fishing tips will help you a lot in your bass fishing adventure.

Anglers Will Have To Figure Out Falling Water At Bassmaster Open On Mississippi River

Anglers Will Have To Figure Out Falling Water At Bassmaster Open On Mississippi River

[print_link]

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Jeremiah Shaver was on the water at daylight Monday morning, practicing for this week’s Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on the Mississippi River.

He had caught a few fish, and he was having fun.

But with the way the fishery is currently evolving, he honestly wasn’t sure he could learn anything that will help him once the tournament begins.

“The water level is supposed to drop about 3 feet here before Thursday,” said Shaver, president of the Wisconsin B.A.S.S. Nation and a competitor in this week’s Open. “Anything that you find today in practice, you could have 3 feet less water on it by the time the tournament starts.”

Competition days will be Thursday through Saturday, with daily takeoffs from Veterans Freedom Park at 6 a.m. CT and weigh-ins back at the park at 2 p.m. each day. A field of more than 200 boaters and 200 nonboaters will participate on Days 1 and 2, with only the Top 12 on each side advancing to Saturday’s championship round.

The water level on the Mississippi River in that part of the country had been high — above 10 feet — for more than three months. Then just as it was beginning to drop in mid-July, 7 inches of rain fell on the region pushing it back to more than 11 1/2 feet.

Now with the water dropping steadily each day, forecasts say the river will be around 7 1/2 feet by the time the tournament begins and possibly below 7 feet by Saturday.

After that kind of fluctuation, it’ll also be heavily stained.

“There’s a lot of mud left from the rains and a lot of mud left from the high water,” Shaver said. “Then there’s gonna be a lot of mud pulled off the bank as the water recedes.”

“Finding clear water is going to be critical — and then just adjusting to the water dropping every day.”

What has been raging current on the Mississippi River is also likely to subside quite a bit as the water drops. Shaver said that could reposition the fish, bringing the main channel into play.

“La Crosse is known for frogging, but the frog bite really hasn’t been what it should be because of the high water and the changing conditions,” he said. “The weeds go up, they go back down. It’s matty, it’s dirty. You’ll get some frog fish, but I would anticipate a lot of different patterns.

“Smallmouth will come into play quite a bit, especially as the water drops and they pull back out on the rock in the main channel.”

As Shaver pointed out, there’s a lot of water between Pools 7, 8 and 9 where the tournament will take place — and each pool reacts differently as they drop water. Grass also changes the complexion of the fishery, sometimes making it possible to fish clear water on one side of the boat and muddy water off the other.

Shaver, who had 10 rods on his deck for Monday’s practice, said that diversity will bring many techniques into play, including topwater, swim jigs, flipping crankbait and drop shotting.

“I think you’ll see someone crack maybe a 17- or an 18-pound bag,” he said. “But to do that over two or three days will be tough. I think if someone can average 15 pounds over three days, they’ll definitely be in the running.

“This tournament is going to be won by whoever can adjust to the conditions. I don’t think anyone will have a spot that stays loaded all week.”

DT®-6 helps Iaconelli win Bassmaster Open on James River

0
[print_link]

While he may have been fishing what he called a “trout stream pattern,” Mike Iaconelli was throwing a classic bass bait Saturday when he won the Bassmaster Eastern Open on the James River in Virginia.

“I caught almost everything I weighed today on a Rapala DT-6 #dt6inhisface, in a color called Old School,” said Iaconelli, a Rapala Pro from New Jersey.

Iaconelli’s “trout stream pattern,” he told Bassmaster.com, targeted unpressured fish in the lowest water he could access. A similar pattern has proven successfully previously for him on the Delaware River back home.

“The low water was the key,” Iaconelli told Bassmaster.com. “I didn’t mind if it was incoming or outgoing, but lower water stages were the key.”

Iaconelli found fish on hard-bottom areas near lily pad edges in several creeks – perfect targets for a Rapala DT-6 crankbait. “DT” stands for “dives to.” Therefore, a DT-6 will dive to six feet. Fished in four to five feet of water, it will bump and grind into the bottom, deflecting off rocks and other obstructions – and that’s when you get bites.

“Making sure the crankbait deflects on every cast is really important,” Iaconelli has explained. “You want that crankbait touching, bumping. You want it rubbing.”

Built of balsa wood, Rapala’s signature material, DT’s swim with an inimitable tight wobble and can back out of shallow cover better than copycat crankbaits, floating up and minimizing snags. In stained to muddy water brightly-colored DT’s generally out-produce brownish and greenish patterns. In clearer water, the more natural color patterns usually prevail.

Iaconelli’s win Saturday was his first B.A.S.S. victory since 2014.

“This win means as much to me as my first club tournament win, because I’ve come close so many times,” Iaconelli told Bassmaster.com. “This is the sixth B.A.S.S. event on the James River, and I believe this is my fourth Top 12. I always had one bad day to keep me from winning. Today, it was enough to win.”

Iaconelli and his Rapala baits will be in action next August 21-25 in the Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour’s season championship Redcrest tournament on the Mississippi River out of La Crosse, WI. You can watch Iaconelli and other Rapala pros fish live in the competition here: https://majorleaguefishing.com/videos/mlf-now/
