Iaconelli Chases Tide To Take Lead At Bassmaster Eastern Open On James River

RICHMOND, Va. — Mike Iaconelli of Pitts Grove, N.J., leveraged low water windows to back up his Day 1 catch of 15 pounds, 2 ounces with an identical Day 2 bag for a 30-4 total that leads the Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open on the James River.

As Iaconelli explained, tidal fisheries typically deliver their best opportunities on low, outgoing tides, as the falling water positions fish in predictable locations where they utilize current breaks to ambush forage flushed from shoreline cover. “Chasing” a tide refers to fishing the preferred stage until it ends and then repositioning up or down the tidal plane to find that scenario in another location.

“It was the same thing as yesterday; the lowest outgoing water you can find is key,” Iaconelli said. “What happens is you have it here in the morning, then it goes away and then you run South and you get it there in the afternoon.

“The reason I had that bag today is because I had a late flight. Had I had to check in a 2 o’clock, I would not have had that bag. I was able to fish two completely different areas of the river and keep with the low, outgoing tide. Almost all of that bag came late.”

Iaconelli said he power fished with three different reaction baits. Essential to his success was targeting areas with hard cover and nearby grass. That gives the fish those ambush spots with plenty of forage coming out of the soft cover.

“I’m fishing areas with current flow; nothing I’m fishing has slack water,” Iaconelli said. “Everything has what I call a ‘flush’ going past it.

“It’s all reaction baits on heavy line. I’m just throwing and winding. There’s no finesse at all. It’s in and out and if they bite, they bite.”

Noting that he intends to follow the same game plan tomorrow, Iaconelli said he knows he has his work cut out for him. Tides advance about an hour each day, so tomorrow’s later window of afternoon low tide could become a critical factor.

“I’ll need a magic day tomorrow to win; I’ll need one of those 18- to 20-pound days,” he said. “It’s possible — (Day 1 leader) Bryan Schmitt did it. They’re here, I’m in the right areas to do it, I just have to get fortunate.”

Kataro Kiriyama of Guntersville, Ala., is in second place with 29-14. Improving from eighth place on Day 1, Kiriyama added 14-14 to his first-round weight of 15 pounds. The key, he said, was recognizing the opportunity delivered by changing conditions.

“I fished a similar area in the Chickahominy River, but the approach was different,” Kiriyama said. “The fish positioned differently today because the tide was one hour later and I didn’t know that until 11:30 — I had no fish until then. From there, I caught all of my fish in about an hour and a half.

“I’ve never been here before, but I have experience on the Potomac River and the Delaware River (both tidal fisheries). I figured it could be similar, so I was patiently waiting until I thought it was good and that’s when it happened.”

Precise presentations with finesse worms were the key to triggering bites from fish positioned in feeding spots.

Tommy Little of Chester, Va., is in third place with 29-11. Drawing on his three decades of James River experience, he avoided the frustration he experienced on Day 1 by adjusting the order in which he ran his spots.

“I changed my rotation up today because it took me until 11 o’clock yesterday morning before I caught my first keeper,” Little said. “I had one on my first stop this morning and then I caught my biggest fish on my second stop. I caught another big fish around 11 and then I caught fish the rest of the day.”

Little declined to mention what he used to fool his fish, but he did say that he had 10 rods on is deck and could have left nine in the locker.

Timothy Lucy of Prince George, Va., is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 6-10 largemouth.

Jon Wiese of Charlotte, N.C., leads the co-angler division with 18-2. He said his day Friday included a thrilling start, a peppy conclusion and a whole lot of boredom in the middle.

“It was crazy, I literally had one bite in the first three quarters of the day, but it was the one that counted,” Wiese said of the 5-pounder that ate a wakebait. “At the end of the day, we ran up the river, I picked up a little black and blue Zoom Finesse worm on a Slider head and caught three fish in three casts.

“They were sitting in a little shaded area, the tide was going out and they were just fighting over food. It was meant to be and it happened.”

Scott Stephenson III holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with a 7-8 largemouth.

Saturday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. ET at Osborne Park & Boat Landing. The weigh-in will be held at the Bass Pro Shops in Ashland, Va. at 3 p.m.

The event is hosted by Richmond Region Tourism and Visit Henrico County.

FISH THE FUTURE WITH SUFIX® ADVANCE® FLUOROCARBON

0

For the past year, Rapala® pros have seen the future, fishing with prototype Advance® Fluorocarbon, the most supple, sensitive and strong fluoro line Sufix® has ever engineered. For the rest of us, the future is now, with the release of the new easy-handling, super-sensitive and abrasion-resistant fluoro line.

“It’s extremely durable, but for the first time ever, we’ve got a fluoro that’s extremely limp,” says Rapala Pro Randall Tharp, a Major League Fishing competitor. “And that makes it last a long time and come off your reel good. And that, in turn, puts more fish in your boat. It’s going to make your life easier and catch more fish.”

A proprietary gel phase technology process allows Sufix to maximize fluoropolymers to create a 100% fluorocarbon line that outperforms other fluoro lines so well that it merits its own category.

“Fluorocarbon has less stretch than mono, but it has more stretch than braid,” Tharp says. “And this Sufix Advanced Fluoro has the perfect balance for me.”

Advance Fluorocarbon’s inherent qualities and exclusive G2 Precision Winding make it virtually memory-free, preventing the dreaded line coils that jump off your reel with most other fluorocarbons.

“I can put it on that spool for months, pull it out of my rod locker, make a cast with it and it comes off of there without those coils,” says Rapala Pro Seth Feider, a Bassmaster Elite Series competitor. “It really clears up some of those headaches you have with fishing straight fluorocarbon on a spinning reel.”

Advance Fluorocarbon does not achieve increased suppleness by sacrificing strength or feel.

“The strength-to-diameter ratio is so unbelievable,” Feider says. “That’s what we have in our Advance Fluorocarbon – super-strong, super-abrasion-resistant.”

It’s so strong, in fact, that Feider trusts 6-pound-test Advance Fluorocarbon where he once fished 8-pound-test fluoro.

“I’ve been able to go down a size, basically, in everything that I was doing before,” he says. “And when you’re smallmouth fishing clear water [with] light line – spotted bass are the same way, too – that’s going to get you a ton, ton more bites.”

On the other end of the spectrum, Major League Fishing standout Jacob Wheeler’s confidence in Advance Fluorocarbon includes “knowing that when I pitch into that heavy cover and I hook that big one, I’m going to be able to get it in.”

Advance Fluorocarbon features a higher density index than traditional nylon lines, a quality that helps anglers feel bottom and bites better.

“The density … how hard it is, really gives you a lot better feel,” Feider explains.

Wheeler says Advance Fluorocarbon affords him invaluable “intel of what’s going on down there” on the bottom. “That can be the difference of having a bad day or having a great one,” he says.

Another benefit of a higher-density line like Advance Fluorocarbon is that it will convey your bait four times faster to the strike zone than will old-school nylon line. And baits that work best fished on or near the bottom will get bit even better, thanks to Advance Fluorocarbon’s virtual invisibility underwater.

“Knowing that the fish aren’t seeing it is a huge thing,” Wheeler says.

Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon is available in 200-yard and 1,200-yard spools, and in 10 strengths: 4-, 6-, 8-, 10-, 12-, 14-, 17-, 20-, 25- and 30-pound test.

“Line is something that’s often overlooked, but to me it’s the most crucial piece of the puzzle when fishing,” Tharp says. “It doesn’t matter what kind of rod, reel or lure – it’s meaningless without good line.”

Finesse Fishing: Lighten Up for Bass SEAGUAR

Finesse Fishing: Lighten Up for Bass

Legendary bass pro Shaw Grigsby talks the why, how, and when of finesse bass techniques

[print_link]

Louisville, KY (July 26, 2019) – Bass fishing isn’t always easy. Weather conditions like cold fronts and high-pressure systems, as well as probing the same waters as lots of other anglers can make fishing tough. But there are ways to up your odds in these and other difficult conditions. One of the best? Finesse fishing – fishing smaller baits on lighter line with a more deliberate and slower approach.

When it comes to finesse fishing, one of the greatest finesse bass anglers on the scene – legendary bass pro and tournament angler, Shaw Grigsby – has a wealth of critical information to share that can boost your game on the waters you fish.

One of my favorite fishing techniques is finesse fishing – smaller baits, lighter line, a lot of fish and loads of fun! Why finesse fishing? There are so many times that big baits are just too big for the fish,” Grigsby says. “Bass see them but they just don’t want them; they see the lure too well or the conditions are difficult, like cold fronts, high blue skies, or a lot of people around you fishing, and you just can’t catch them. So downsizing and going finesse can be the key. Just lay your bait out there and kind of jiggle it and really, what it does is all these smaller baits make it look like what’s natural for the bass to eat in their environment.”

In terms of specific techniques, some of Grigsby’s favorite presentations are drop-shot rigs, shakey head worms, wacky worms, tubes, and the legendary Ned Rig, all of which he typically presents in natural colors like green pumpkin and watermelon red.

“And when you present these techniques to them, it appears so real and it’s so small that they don’t have an issue with it,” Grigsby continues. “A lot of times a big bait may appear too bulky – and maybe you’ll catch a giant fish using a big bait at times – but when you get clear water and difficult conditions, then it’s pretty much time to downsize and go finesse. And I’ve caught giants on finesse tactics. Finesse techniques catch as many big fish as they do small and average-size ones.”

Grigsby keeps a half dozen spinning rods rigged up with finesse presentation in his boat at all times. He’s a fan of medium-light power, fast-action Skeet Reese Signature Series spinning rods, typically in the 7’3” range, and Skeet Reese size-30 Victory Pro Wright McGill spinning reels, which he favors for their large spools.

The linchpin to the system, though, is his choice in line. He spools his with Seaguar FINESSE Fluorocarbon, a line designed specifically for finesse bass fishing applications. “It’s really delicate yet strong stuff that excels for all my finesse fishing,” he offers. “I wouldn’t think of using anything else. And compared to other 8-pound line, Seaguar’s 8.4-pound is remarkably thin, supple, and strong, it’s typically my first choice in every finesse fishing application.”

Seaguar has a host of FINESSE 100% fluorocarbon lines for every finesse-fishing situation including 5.2-pound, 6.2-pound, 7.3-pound, and 8.4-pound sizes. These are double-structure fluorocarbon lines, which is an exclusive and superior Seaguar line technology that combines two different resins into one line. The high-density interior resin improves tensile strength and sensitivity while the softer exterior resin enhances knot strength. That means great sensitivity, knot strength, and the strength to handle any big fish you hook while remaining super supple.

“When you’re dealing with spinning tackle, that’s what counts – having a nice supple line that still has the hook-setting power and the strength to hold them,” Grigsby emphasizes. “Because when you’re finesse fishing you never know when that next hookset could be an 8-, 9-, or 10-pound bass. It could be the biggest fish of your life because they’re suckers for those little baits. So that’s why I always carry specific technique rods and reels and use line designed specifically for finesse fishing.”

One of Grigsby’s favorite finesse techniques is fishing a drop-shot rig, which essentially consists of a small plastic bait suspended above a short length of line terminated at the bottom with a weight. “With the drop-shot, you can literally float your baits above bottom and really catch ‘em,” he says. “For most of my drop-shot set-ups I’m using Seaguar 7.3- or 8.4-pound 100% FINESSE Fluorocarbon, which holds up really well and the fish can’t see, whether I’m fishing in clear, open water or around a lot of cover.”

That brings up another point Grigsby is adamant about, and that’s not limiting finesse fishing tactics to clear waters. “You might find flooded areas with a lot of cover where the instinct is to pound with a jig, but finesse tactics – even in heavy cover – can really produce,” Grigsby advises. “Don’t overlook finesse even though you’ve got a lot of cover. It’s simple – hook ‘em, play ‘em, and get them out. Always concentrate on getting the strike, don’t worry about landing them. Landing them generally happens.”

Grigsby is a big fan of fishing wacky worm rigs in heavy cover, typically a 5-inch Strike King Ocho on a Trokar hook with weed guard on Seaguar 7.3- or 8.4-pound 100% FINESSE Fluorocarbon line. “When you throw something really light like a wacky worm into heavy cover on a finesse rig, it can really produce. A lot of times you can catch ‘em when other methods fail to produce.”

Lastly, Grigsby also carries a rod or two in his boat for Ned Rig fishing, a finesse technique that has earned an almost magical reputation across the country.

“The Ned Rig has really come along to be one of the main finesse baits to just catch ‘em,” says Grigsby. “It’s awesome. I got introduced to it about three or four years ago with its flat head – like you took an Aspirin and put a hook in it – and using something like an Ocho worm that you cut in half. I didn’t have any of the right jigheads so I just took the Ochos I had, cut them in half, and started fishing them on a regular 3/16-oz. shakey head and just caught the fire out of the fish!” he recalls. “But once you get a Ned jighead and it stands up so perfectly it works even better. Something I found out that’s really interesting is that when you discover the bass are eating this little bait, a Ned worm also works wonders on a Trokar nose hook fished as a drop shot. I started fishing it on a drop shot and the fish I caught was ridiculous. So, I now combine the two techniques quite a bit.”

No matter where you fish bass, going finesse can definitely up your odds for more and bigger fish when the going gets tough. Take a few tips from legendary bass pro and finesse expert, Shaw Grigsby, and we promise you’ll put more bass in the boat, too.

Lucky Break Gives Bryan Schmitt Day 1 Lead At Bassmaster Open On James River

[print_link]

RICHMOND, Va. — Bryan Schmitt knows his way around tidal fisheries, but he welcomed a stroke of good fortune that delivered a five-bass limit of 20 pounds, 4 ounces giving him the Day 1 lead of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open on the James River.

Schmitt’s catch included a 6-10 largemouth that leads the Phoenix Boats Big Bass competition.

“I got one of those crazy, like pure-luck bites today,” the Maryland pro said. “This place has giants, but they’re not biting. I got one of those today and that made all the difference.”

With much of the field running to the Chickahominy River (a fertile James River tributary), Schmitt spent his day in the James. He fished a lot of water, but targeted the same habitat scenario.

“I’m fishing both grass and wood,” Schmitt said. “Clean water was the key. I knew this scenario could happen; I’ve seen it here, but when does it ever really work out? I got that big bite early and I thought, ‘This might be a good day.’”

Understandably tight on details, Schmitt said he caught his fish on a selection of Missile Baits. Notably, most anglers found their better action during the latter half of the day, which brought outgoing water.

Schmitt, however, did most of his damage early.

“The morning was better by far,”he said. “I prefer low tide on this river, but I got fortunate on the higher water today.

“I fished clean today and caught 10 fish.”

Tim Ward of Sylacauga, Ala., is in second place with 17-15. He started his day by sacking up a solid limit in the Chickahominy, upgraded in a smaller creek and then secured his final culls in the James.

Ward’s biggest fish — a 4 1/2-pounder — surprised him in the Chickahominy.

“I was hoping there were some big fish there, but I had no clue that caliber of fish was there,” he said. “I had been catching a lot of 2-pound fish in practice and I caught one 5-pounder in another area and that keyed me in on what I needed to do.

“I started implementing that everywhere I went. I kept one rod in my hand all day and that produced all my weight.”

Denny Fiedler of Minnetonka, Minn., is in third place with 16-10. Relying on a mix of reaction and slow baits, he caught his better fish in the afternoon.

“It was low tide for us when they really started to bite,” Fiedler said. “It was the bottom of that outgoing tide and the very start of the incoming. There were two basic patterns: During high water, we were fishing pads —soft cover. When the tide was going out, it was all hard cover.”

Scott Stephenson III leads the co-angler division with 12-0. Fishing a mix of grass and wood, he caught his fish on what he termed “slower” presentations.

Stephenson holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with a 7-8 — the largest fish of Day 1. His kicker bit midday and Stephenson surmised that the deeper spot he was fishing likely contributed to his big opportunity.

Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. ET at Osborne Park & Boat Landing. The weigh-in will be held at the park at 2 p.m.

The event is hosted by Richmond Region Tourism and Visit Henrico County.

How To Spool A Baitcaster: A Beginner’s First Steps – MTB

How To Spool A Baitcaster: A Beginner’s First Steps

[print_link]

A baitcast reel is the hardest reel for a beginner to learn to cast without backlashing. However, beginners will be glad to know that it is much easier to spool line on a baitcaster than on a spinning or spincast reel.

The main consideration when spooling a baitcaster is the line size and type of line you will be adding to the reel. If you plan on spooling 20-pound test on your reel, the line is thicker so you will be putting less line to fill up the spool than you would if you were spooling thinner 10-pound test.

You can tie monofilament or fluorocarbon directly to the spool and start filling the reel, but braided line slips too much when tied directly to the spool so you will need some type of backing to prevent this slippage. I usually fill the reel with a couple of yards of old monofilament for backing and then connect the monofilament and braid with an Albright knot before spooling on the braid.

How To Spool A Baitcaster
Braided line provides less stretch and memory when compared to monofilament or fluorocarbon line.

The first step I employ when spooling a baitcast reel is to pass my line through all of the rod guides and then through the reel’s level wind guide. Passing the line through all of the rod guides helps put more tension on the line while spooling which prevents loops from forming in the spool. Next, I wrap the line around the spool and tie an overhand knot around the line. I complete an arbor knot by tying an overhand knot on the line’s tag end and then pull the main line until both knots tighten to the spool. I trim the tag end as close as I can to the knot before I start reeling in line.

How To Spool A Baitcaster
Fill your spool the same way you fill a cup of water. Fill to the top but not the tippy top.

While reeling line onto the spool I keep tension on the line by running it between my thumb and forefinger on my hand holding the rod. I make sure my line comes off of the filler spool the same way it loads onto the baitcast reel to prevent line twists that can cause casting problems later. So I want my filler spool to feed line off the top because the reel spool takes in line from the bottom of its turn.

Night Fishing 101 by Chris Moxley

Night Fishing 101

It is summer time, it’s hot, the boat traffic is crazy and the fish just don’t want to bite.
Well, you can beat the heat, forget about the boat traffic and still catch a ton of bass.
Once the hot summer time heat starts and the pleasure boaters come out, I almost solely fish at night. Lets go over some of my key baits and some tips for summer time bass fishing at night. The first thing you always want to consider when fishing at night is safety.

Lights are a key factor at night. Make sure all your navigation lights work so other boaters can see you. Also, a headlight/flash light is a must. It gets a lot darker out on the water then you think. You will need to see to get your tackle and also to cast. I always use the brightest head light I can buy, no such thing as too bright. The last but maybe most important safety item is your life vest. It is dark and one wrong step could put you in the water. I use a self inflating life vest and wear it at all times while night fishing. Now that we have covered the safety items, lets get into the tackle and set up. I like to keep my lures at night very simple. You do not want to be re-tying and changing lures all the time.

Remember it’s dark and hard to see. I use a 3 lure set up that never lets me down; a football head jig, a swim jig and a big worm. First lets talk about my go to bait at night, the football jig. I like a 1/2 oz Double D Jigs football head jig in black and blue with a Gambler-Lures burner craw on the back. You want to keep bottom contact at all times and you also want to make as much commotion as you can on the bottom. The burner craw on the back of the jig does just that. Fish this around rocks and structure in 5-15 feet of water as the bass move up at night to feed on craw fish. Second is the swim jig and I fish this around docks. If you can find a dock with lights on it, that makes it 100 times better. Bugs will be attracted to the light, bait fish and perch will eat the bugs and the bass will eat the bait fish around the light. For this set up, I like a 3/8 oz swim jig with a Gambler-Lures EZ-Vibes swimbait on the back. The EZ-vibes swimbait has a huge tail thump and makes it easy for the fish to find. White is my go to color for this rig. Last but definitely not least, the big worm. I use this as a clean up bait. I will fish it both around docks and in the rocks for giant night bass. I use a 1/4 oz Woo Tungston weight pegged with a Gambler-Lures 7 inch ribbon tail worm in June bug color. This bait will get bites and will catch the fish that will not eat the jig. I fish all three lures on braid. Remember, it is dark and the fish can not see so use the braid to your advantage. It will help you feel those light bites. So this summer, when its crazy hot and you want to go catch some giant bass, give night fishing a try.
