Topwater Showdown: Hollow Bodied Frogs Vs. Plastic Buzz Toads

[print_link]

Both hollow body frogs and solid plastic toads create plenty of topwater excitement but certain situations and conditions dictate when and where these two lures should be fished.

Fishing pressure can dictate how to select one bait over the other. When fishing pressure is high you need to really slow down your frog presentation to trigger a reaction bite. A hollow body frog is the best option then because it allows you to twitch and pause the lure and let it linger longer in the strike zone.

The Zoom Horny Toad

When To Throw A Toad Vs A Frog

The time of year also determines when to choose a toad or frog. A toad works better earlier in the year from springtime when the fish are starting to move up shallow on to postspawn. Then you can switch over to the hollow body frog during the summertime. You can start throwing the hollow body when the vegetation and pads are fully grown and continue to use the frog until late fall.

The hollow body frog is more of a target-oriented lure for working around isolated cover such as a stump, tree or piling of a dock. The hollow body frog is ideal for fishing cover because you can skip it better and cast it more accurately to targets. You can throw it in thicker cover and walk it, chug it or stop it.

A hollow body frog is also effective in open water or along the edges of weeds where you can retrieve it a variety of ways. You can walk the lure similar to walking a Zara Spook, pop it steadily, hop it out of the water or pause it.

The toad produces better for covering water quickly along vast expanses of weed flats with pad fields or scattered grass. You can cast the toad a lot farther than a hollow body and then just start reeling steadily. The toad also serves as a substitute for a buzz bait if you want a more subtle presentation in open water. So you can use the toad as a search bait and once you find the fish you can slow down and work the cover in the area with the hollow body frog.

The different styles of legs on the toads determine how fast or slow you can effectively work the bait on the surface. A toad with paddle legs can be reeled fast to make a lot of commotion on the surface or retrieved at a slow, steady pace to make it gurgle on top. Experiment with these retrieves and let the fish tell you what they prefer.

Strikes on a frog result in more solid hook sets whereas more misses occur when bass bust a toad. The hookup ratio is worse on toads because of the speed that you are reeling in the bait. You can control how fast you are working the hollow body frog and still have it in the strike zone, whereas you have to keep the toad moving for it to create action. Missed strikes also occur sometimes because grass gets in the way when bass are charging after the toad. The fish open their mouth and hit the grass which hits the toad and knocks it out of the way so they miss it. You get a better hook set with a hollow body frog because most strikes occur when the lure is in the holes of vegetation or open water next to the weeds.

Figuring out when to set the hook with a frog or toad is a matter of timing. You can use a sweeping hook set with a frog even though your rod is usually positioned closer to the water while working the lure. Set the hook immediately when a bass engulfs your frog in open water, but wait until you feel the weight of the fish on your line before setting the hook when a bass strikes in thick grass.

When walking a hollow body frog, make sure the frog has disappeared after a bass strikes and then quickly reel the slack out of your line before setting the hook. You should also delay your hook set after a slurp bite, which occurs when a bass slurps up the frog without creating a surface disturbance.

A delayed hook set also ensures better connections when you wind in a toad. When a bass bites the toad you should crank down two or three times on the reel and then you set the hook with a hard jerk of the rod. If bass continues to short strike the toad, switch to the frog for a slower presentation so the fish can catch up to the lure easier.

Fished in the right situations, both the frog and toad can provide a lot of topwater fun in open water or around cover.

GILL Introduces Flagship Foul Weather Wear at ICAST

New GILL Tournament Pro3L FG100 rain jacket represents years of product development

Buford, GA (July 9, 2019) – Wind, waves, rain, sleet, and snow… There’s nothing more miserable than getting wet, cold, and clammy on the water. And while there is a myriad of rain suits on the market, few live up to their advertised comfort and protection.

Welcome GILL’s new Tournament Pro3L FG100 Jacket, which represents years of product development and the greatest innovation in fishing jacket design in company history.

The remarkable jacket is born of feedback from GILL’s distinguished team of pros and other trusted product testers across the globe – apparel designed and constructed to the most serious standards on the water. The 3-Layer FG100 comes complete with kill cord attachment loops, adjustable Vortex® Hood System and reflective accents.

Introduced as part of their original Tournament Jacket series, Gill’s imaginative Vortex Hood solves several issues faced by anglers and boaters. “Originally, we engaged with our team of pros who shared their issues. Many of them wear a baseball or trucker style cap, hoodie, and then the waterproof shell with the hood up. Hoods inflate, caps fly off, so, we got to work on developing a solution,” says Matt Clark, Product Development Director, GILL.

After designing numbers of different hood configurations in their U.K. product development office and shipping to the U.S. for testing, Gill ultimately settled on the current and incomparable Vortex Hood.

“The Vortex Hood has a three-channeled construction with air chutes built into the hood itself. One goes over the top of the head and exits at the rear of the collar, and two vent down the side of the hood and out through the collar. You get a slipstream effect, allowing air to enter the front and exit out the back.

“Look at it in aerospace terms. With an airplane wing you get the vortex effect when wind travels faster over the top of the curved surface. So, over the top of the Vortex Hood wind speed accelerates and the air is sucked out the back of the hood.”

Another significant feature of the new FG100 is its revolutionary fabric design, guaranteed to keep anglers dry no matter what harsh conditions they face.

“We’re introducing a new 3-layer, all-in-one fabric system to sportfishing,” said Clark. “The system features a durable outer face that can put up with abrasions, scuffs and being worn in some tough conditions. And water just beads and rolls off it…

“The inner layer features the waterproof, breathable technology; the barrier that stops water coming in from the outside, which is very important as it allows the fabric to breathe and transport moisture away from the skin. When you’re out all day on the water, conditions can turn warm and humid, but it’s still wet enough where you need a waterproof jacket. So, breathability makes all the difference.”

Clark continues: “Lastly, you have the next to skin layer, a material that picks up moisture from the skin and starts the moisture transport process. It spreads moisture evenly across the fabric to dry much quicker.”

Features galore and Gill’s all-in-one, 3-layer fabric system make the FG100 Jacket the new benchmark in fishing rainwear.

FG100 Technology:

  • Waterproof
  • Fully taped seams
  • Durable water repellent finish
  • 3-layer fabric construction
  • Reflective
  • Vortex hood

FG100 Features/Benefits:

  • Vortex hood technology streams airflow to keep hood in place
  • 3-layer waterproof and breathable fabric
  • Adjustable double cuff with PU inner seal for watertight comfort
  • YKK Aquaguard front zip

The Tournament Pro 3L FG100 comes in two new colors (Graphite and Taupe) as well as sizing up to 4XL. It has an MSRP of $349.

NEW OZ by ScentLok Radial EZ and Radial Nano destroy odors, bacteria, mold and fungus

Fishing Just Got a Lot Less Funky

NEW OZ by ScentLok Radial EZ and Radial Nano destroy odors, bacteria, mold and fungus

[print_link]

MUSKEGON, Mich. (July 10, 2019) – The fishing lifestyle is fabulous… until it stinks. Odors from live bait and rogue fish slime can get trapped in coolers, livewells, fish boxes, on gear… even inside our vehicles and homes. Additionally, the damp marine environment can result in the growth of bacteria, mold, mildew and fungus in the compartments and cabins of our boats and the other places we store our gear.

Put an end to the funky parts of fishing with the all-new OZ by ScentLok line of Marine Active Odor Destroyers, which emit a powerful stream of ozone that seeks out and destroys odor, bacteria, mold and mildew wherever they exist.

Ozone is a powerful, natural sanitizing agent. The O3 molecule is inherently unstable; the third oxygen atom has a tendency to break its relatively weak bond and attach to other nearby molecules at any opportunity, forming new compounds in the process. When a molecule with a distinct odor receives an additional oxygen atom through oxidation, it is changed to something new that no longer possesses the recognizable odor. That’s why ozone is such a powerful odor destroyer, and why ozone generators are quickly becoming indispensible tools for anglers, hunters and anyone else who wants to quickly and effectively deodorize gear and spaces, while also destroying mold, bacteria and fungus.

Designed for anglers and boaters, new OZ by ScentLok Marine Active Odor Destroyers consist of the fully portable, rechargeable OZ Radial EZ and OZ Radial Nano, as well as the OZ 20 vehicle deodorizer which plugs directly into any 12V receptacle.

“We’re incredibly excited to be unveiling our new OZ Marine line of Active Odor Destroyers at ICAST 2019,” says Nexus Outdoors VP or Marketing, Nick Andrews. “Most boaters and anglers haven’t realized the benefits of ozone technology because effective, fully portable products specifically designed for their needs haven’t existed. We’ve put an incredible amount of thought and engineering into these new OZ Marine models, and we’re anxious to show them to the industry at ICAST.”

Attendees at this week’s ICAST show can see the all-new OZ by ScentLok line of Marine Active Odor Destroyers in the ICAST New Product Showcase and in the OZ by ScentLok booth (#4200).

Z-Man’s® salty yet buoyant TRD BugZ™ moves and smacks of bass food

Honey, I Shrunk the Creature Bait!

Z-Man’s® salty yet buoyant TRD BugZ™ moves and smacks of bass food

[print_link]

LADSON, SC (July 10, 2019) – “Z-Man has become the undisputed authority on finesse fishing for one big—actually, little— reason,” says professional bass man, Mark Daniels, Jr.

“This is a company of perceptive anglers who recognized and dialed into the fact bass of all sizes—including great big ones—rely on small forage throughout their entire lifecycle,” adds Daniels. “Runt crayfish, young-of-the year baitfish and insect larvae all get eaten by bass, every day. It’s one reason anglers often go out and boat over a hundred bass a day on baits like the new TRD BugZ.”

Daniels, who won the 2018 Bassmaster Elite Series event on Lake Oahe, South Dakota by casting TRD-Series softbaits, speaks energetically about Z-Man’s newest “creature,” the TRD BugZ. “This shape and profile are absolutely natural,” he says. “Like other TRD baits, the BugZ is subtle and non-threatening, yet has a bunch of little goodies built into its 2-3/4-inch body.”

Equally allured by ElaZtech baits, smallmouth bass fanatic and fellow Major League Fishing Tour angler, Luke Clausen was the first to suggest the idea of a downsized creature bait. “Big smallmouths love to eat small stuff—invertebrates like little one- and two-inch crayfish,” Clausen asserts. “Z-Man’s new TRD BugZ leans on an incredibly productive bass bait profile and downsizes it to Ned Rig proportions. It looks like a craw, acts like a craw, but with a slowed down drop-speed and awesome back-and-forth spiral on the drop.”

Smartly crafted with a wealth of fish-catching attributes, the TRD BugZ exhibits a slightly pear-shaped, flattened silhouette, highlighted with deep-cut ribs across its torso. Riddled with crustacean-like bumps, a primary flapper tail extends an inch from the torso, and can be split into two claw-like sections, or left intact. On each side of the tail is a secondary, leaf-shaped “flipper,” each one molded to lie perpendicular to the torso and tail, producing offsetting action and faint pulsing vibrations.

With appendages waving enticingly throughout the retrieve, the bait’s highly buoyant ElaZtech composition further accentuates its slow-gliding action. At rest on the bottom, the TRD BugZ tilts up and sits in that familiar defensive posture that makes bass bite it.

Further amplifying its bite-and-hold appeal to bass, the TRD BugZ’ ribbed body, super-soft texture and 15-percent salt impregnation compel fish to eat and retain it longer than comparable softbaits. Ironically, the bait’s soft ElaZtech structure also means it’s outlandishly durable, capable of dozens of fish catches per bait.

“This is the dream-bait I’ve wanted for casting to clear water smallmouths for a long time,” adds Clausen. “I feel like it’s almost equally attractive to smallmouths as a hair jig. The bait’s that good. And after catching a bunch of largemouths on it in North Carolina this year, I’m starting to discover the BugZ works in dirty water, too.”

TRD BugZ with Pro ShroomZ™ jighead

TRD BugZ with Finesse BulletZ™ Weedless jighead

TRD BugZ with NedlockZ™ HD jighead

While the TRD BugZ works well as a finesse jig trailer, Clausen and Daniels both prefer to put the bait on a NedlockZ™ HD or Pro ShroomZ jighead. For sliding through grass and brush, the TRD BugZ is a perfect fit for the Finesse BulletZ™ weedless jighead.

“I fish it a little more aggressively than other TRD style baits,” says Clausen. “Hop it off bottom; keep it up where fish can see it. A 90-degree head like the Pro ShroomZ™ really helps it spiral in big circles and create more action on the fall.”

“Heck, I like to nose-hook the BugZ and dropshot it, too” adds Daniels. “The bait’s got a sweet little profile, and mad action that screams bass food! — plain and simple.”

Ned Kehde, godfather of Midwest Finesse, adds: “For over a decade, old-school Midwest finesse anglers have been in search of their ideal miniature creature-style bait that possesses an appendage they call a beaver-style tail. In our eyes, Z-Man’s TRD BugZ looks to be an ideal one.”

Available in July, the new Z-Man TRD BugZ expands your arsenal of finesse-sized Ned Rig baits. TRD BugZ 6-packs sit in a state-of-the-art bait tray, available in 16 radical Z-Man colors. For more information visit www.zmanfishing.com or drop by Z-Man booth #5118 at ICAST 2019.

LIVETARGET Unveils Exciting New Technology and a Host of Hot, New Baits

LIVETARGET Unveils Exciting New Technology and a Host of Hot, New Baits

[print_link]

New Injected Core Technology™ (ICT) baits on display at ICAST 2019 and available for consumer purchase on July 10th

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (July 9, 2019) – LIVETARGET is proud to unveil the exciting, new bait manufacturing technology at this year’s ICAST. Always striving to Match-the-Hatch®, LIVETARGET introduces Injected Core Technology™ (ICT): an entirely new innovation in bait design that offers heightened realism on multiple levels. Recognizing that traditional manufacturing techniques lack both realism and detail, LIVETARGET has developed a specialized injection process that merges realism with

function like never before.

For years, lure manufacturers have been struggling to create baits that are realistic in profile while also maintaining the desired action. The problem has always been; in order to create an accurate action, a mechanical shape was necessary. Whether it was the wide shape of a spoon that generated a wobble action or a paddletail that gave a swimbait its signature rolling action, the mechanics used to create the strike-provoking movement always took away from the realism of the lure. A game fish that was initially attracted to the flash and movement of the lure became wary once it was close enough to see the unnatural mechanical profile.

LIVETARGET’s solution is Injected Core Technology™. A lifelike Inner-Core is constructed with realistic forage profiles, detailed anatomy and vibrant colors. The core is then encapsulated in a clear, durable Exo-Skin, which generates the bait’s signature action but is less noticeable underwater. Game fish focus on the natural profile of the Inner-Core and are not alarmed by the action-generating mechanics.

The result is a line of baits that perfectly Match-the-Hatch® in both anatomy and action. ICT lures simply catch more fish because they look more realistic; not only from a distance, but more importantly, up close. One of the most significant advantages of ICT is the ratio of plastic between the Inner-Core and Exo-Skin. The Inner-Core is approximately 30% smaller than the overall cubic mass of the entire lure. That means anglers can present a smaller hatch size but still have the advantages of throwing a bigger bait. This presents additional benefits, such as increased water displacement, extra weight for longer casts and the ability to use larger hooks while presenting a smaller hatch.

LIVETARGET now offers a full arsenal of ICT baits for a multitude of diverse angling applications. Those include a surface/sub-surface commotion frog, jigging spoon, casting spoon; swimbait; drop shot, and soft jerkbait.  What anglers will find is an extensive family of Injected Core Technology™ baits suitable to a variety of applications. These innovative, new lures will be unveiled at the American Sportfishing Association’s ICAST show in Orlando this week and will be simultaneously available for purchase starting tomorrow, July 10th.

ICT FREESTYLE FROG is a versatile twin-tail bait that can be fished on the surface over vegetation or dive sub-surface in open runs. It hosts the realistic Inner-Core anatomy of a fleeing frog, while the clear Exo-Skin generates a tantalizing surface buzzing action. Injected Core Technology™ enables the Inner-Core to host a lifelike frog profile, while the Exo-Skin gives the lure its signature action. Comes in 3 sizes and 8 colors. MSRP: $9.99 USD

ICT SLOW-ROLL SHINER is an unrigged paddletail swimbait that mimics a fleeing thin-profiled baitfish. It features Injected Core Technology™, offering improved baitfish profile and detail over traditional paddletail swimbaits. Hard-thumping and a rolling body action creates a subtle and enticing action, while LIVETARGET’s unique, proprietary metallic core produces a radiant flash far more reflective and better balanced compared to traditional paddletail baits and old school foil inserts. Comes in 3 sizes and 6 colors. Ideal for both freshwater and saltwater. MSRP: $9.99 USD

ICT GHOST TAIL MINNOW is a dropshot bait that mimics a minnow feeding near bottom structure. It features Injected Core Technology™, enabling the Inner-Core to host a lifelike minnow profile, while the Exo-Skin gives the lure its signature finesse action. Proprietary metal powder provides vibrant metallic flash and realism, and the unique tail design generates a finesse quivering action, emulating the movement of a small minnow. Only the slightest rod-tip movements are required for a lifelike presentation. Comes in 3 sizes and 6 colors. MSRP: $9.99

ICT FLUTTER SHAD is a jigging spoon with an erratic twitch and dynamic falling action that’s anatomically accurate and exceptionally lifelike compared to traditional jigging spoons. Injected Core Technology™ enables the Inner-Core to host a lifelike shad profile, while the Exo-Skin gives the lure its signature flutter action. Ice anglers have already reported exceptional multi-species catches on the FLUTTER SHAD. Comes in 5 weights and 10 colors. MSRP: $9.99 USD

ICT FLUTTER SARDINE is a jigging spoon with an erratic twitch and a dynamic falling action that’s anatomically accurate and features an exceptionally realistic profile compared to traditional jigging spoons. Injected Core Technology™ enables the Inner-Core to host a lifelike sardine profile, while the Exo-Skin gives the lure its signature flutter action. Perfect for a host of saltwater fishing applications with a saltwater-grade hook, it’s available in 5 weights and 6 colors. MSRP: $9.99 USD

ICT ERRATIC SHINER behaves like a traditional casting spoon but has the narrow profile of a common shiner or minnow. With Injected Core Technology™, the lure has a lifelike Inner-Core that mimics a small fleeing baitfish. The Exo-Skin gives the lure an erratic wide-wobble action, bringing the Inner-Core to life. The metallic core produces a pulsating flash, drawing in nearby gamefish. Weight distribution of the bait makes for effortlessly long casts. Comes in 4 weights and 10 colors. Ideal for both fresh and saltwater. MSRP: $9.99 USD

ICT TWITCH MINNOW is an unrigged soft plastic jerkbait that mimics a thin-body baitfish such as a minnow or shiner. It features Injected Core Technology™, enabling the Inner-Core to host a lifelike minnow profile, while the Exo-Skin gives the lure its signature jerkbait action. Proprietary metal powder provides vibrant metallic flash and realism. Comes in 3 sizes and 6 colors. MSRP: $9.99 USD

ICT SKIP SHAD is an unrigged soft plastic jerkbait that mimics a deep-body profile baitfish such as a shad or sardine. It features Injected Core Technology™, enabling the Inner-Core to host a lifelike shad profile, while the Exo-Skin gives the lure its signature jerkbait action. Proprietary metal powder provides vibrant metallic flash and realism. Comes in 3 sizes and 6 colors. MSRP: $9.99 USD

YETI FLW College Fishing tournament set for Friday, Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Open tournament to follow Saturday

WABASHA, Minn. (July 9, 2019) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) is set to visit Wabasha next week, July 19-20, with the YETI FLW College Fishing tournament at the Mississippi River presented by Evinrude and the Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Open at the Mississippi River presented by Evinrude. The tournaments, hosted by the Wabasha-Kellogg Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention Visitors Bureau, will showcase some of the top young anglers from across the region competing for cash and prizes and angling for their chance to advance to the FLW College Fishing National Championship and High School Fishing National Championship events.

“The river has been crazy high – we’ve had a lot of tournaments cancelled up here – but it’s stabilizing a bit and the fishing is going to be really, really good for the young anglers,” said Yamamoto Baits pro Tom Monsoor of La Crosse, Wisconsin, who has 26 top-10 finishes on the Mississippi River in FLW competition. “The largemouth are biting and the smallies are biting good, too. We’re going to see a lot of mixed bags because everything is biting good right now.”

Monsoor predicted that frogs, topwater baits and jigs would be the key baits for most tournament competitors, and that finding clear water would be the key.

“If they don’t find clear water, they’ll be hurting,” the 16-year FLW Tour veteran said. “Both Pool 4 and Pool 5 are good fishing and hold a lot of fish, but the weather coming into the event will play a role. The current is still running strong, so it’s setting fish up where they should be – in the duckweeds, on riprap and jetties, and points and sand breaks out of the current edges.

“My motto is K.I.S.S. – keep it simple, stupid,” Monsoor chuckled. “Somebody always finds them, and that’s who is going to win. I think the winning weight in both of these tournaments will be 15 to 18 pounds.”

The college anglers will kick off competition on Friday, July 19, at 6:30 a.m. CDT at the Wabasha City Ramp at Izaak Walton Park, located at 707 4th St. W., in Wabasha. The weigh-in will be held at the park on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The high school anglers will then compete on Saturday, July 20, launching at 6 a.m. from the park and weighing in at 2 p.m. All takeoffs and weigh-ins are free to attend and open to the public, and will be streamed live online at FLWFishing.com.

YETI FLW College Fishing teams compete in three regular-season qualifying tournaments in one of five conferences – Central, Northern, Southern, Southeastern and Western. All participants must be registered, full-time students at a college, university or community college and members of a college fishing club that is recognized by their school. The top 10 teams from each division’s three regular-season tournaments and the top 20 teams from the annual FLW College Fishing Open will advance to the 2020 FLW College Fishing National Championship. Additional teams will qualify for the National Championship if the field size in regular-season events exceeds 100 boats.

The Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Open tournaments are free, two-person (team) events for students in grades 7-12 and open to any FLW and Student Angler Federation-affiliated high school clubs. The top 10 percent of teams at each Open event along with the TBF High School Fishing state championships will advance to the 2020 High School Fishing National Championship. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.
