West Virginia Team’s Huge Catch Takes Lead In Bassmaster College Tour At St. Lawrence River

WADDINGTON, N.Y. — West Virginia University’s Nolan Minor and Casey Lanier outfished nearly 300 other college anglers today in what was a slugfest day of fishing at the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series at St. Lawrence River presented by Bass Pro Shops.

The 149-boat field produced a total weight of 3,031 pounds, 3 ounces to begin this tournament in upstate New York. All but three of the teams caught limits of five bass and of that number, 85 teams weighed more than 20 pounds on Day 1.

The tremendous catches came courtesy of ideal conditions on the St. Lawrence River, including water temperatures right at 60 degrees, a fishing season that began only five days ago and local bass in the throes of a full spawn.

Minor and Lanier took advantage of the bounty. The West Virginia duo caught five smallmouth bass on Wednesday that weighed 26-6 — a one-day total that normally would blow most competitors out of the water, but was good for only a 9-ounce cushion on the bountiful St. Lawrence River.

The Mountaineer duo had a limit within an hour of launching from Whittaker Park on Wednesday and culled four or five times later in the morning. Among their early catches was a 6-2 smallmouth Minor got off a bed. It was a personal best for him and the highlight of a day that saw the leaders scouting new water by 10 a.m.

Minor and Lanier are no strangers to success. They finished fourth in last year’s Bassmaster College Series Team of the Year standings and they were in third place in the race entering this event — the fourth and final regular-season stop for college anglers of 2019.

While a win here would be a thrill, Minor and Lanier previously secured a spot in August’s Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops on Tennessee’s Chickamauga Lake.

“There was no pressure on us today,” Minor said. “This is a great place to fish and just have fun. We’ve already qualified for Nationals, and, although we’re in third place in the Team of the Year points, we’re pretty far behind the top two teams. We weren’t worried about finishing in a certain place in the standings here. We just wanted to catch big ones.”

The St. Lawrence River was a perfect stage for doing that. The question now is whether Minor and Lanier can replicate today’s success on Thursday?

“Nothing we came across after 10 o’clock was as big as the 6-2 that Nolan caught today, but we saw some really great fish out there. We can get 20 or 21 pounds Thursday and maybe cull up to 23 or 24. But anything more than that is going to be tough.”

With a target to shoot at, the rest of the 149-boat field will do its best to pressure the leaders the next two days.

Jackson Carrell and Bryton Kurtz of Sam Houston State University in Texas are in second place after catching a limit of smallmouth bass weighing 25-13. While limits of largemouth weighing in the 25-pound range are not uncommon on Texas fisheries, the team didn’t expect anything like the smallmouth bite they encountered on the St. Lawrence.

“To catch a 25-pound bag of only smallmouth just blows my mind,” Kurtz said. “It’s one of the best places I’ve ever been.”

Carrell stopped short of saying that catching bass was easy on Wednesday, but he admitted the Sam Houston State team didn’t have to work hard to figure out the bite.

“We had one rod on deck the whole day and had the trolling motor high, running banks just like everyone else,” he said. “The water is so clean, you can see the fish at depths anywhere from 4 to 15 feet.”

Perry Marvin and Cantley Krafft of Virginia Tech University are third with 25-10. Brian Linder and Nathan Thompson of Bemidji (Minn.) State University are fourth with 25-9, and Logan Parks and Lucas Lindsay of Auburn (Ala.) University are fifth with 25-5.

The college event on the St. Lawrence follows similar derbies held earlier this year on North Carolina’s Lake Norman in February, Alabama’s Smith Lake in March and Arkansas’ Bull Shoals Lake in April.

The Top 10 percent of teams from each of those tournaments, as well as the ongoing event at the St. Lawrence, qualify for the national tournament on Chickamauga on Aug. 1-3. Duos can also qualify for the championship through their individual state tournaments or by finishing in the Top 25 of the Team of the Year standings.

Parks and Lindsay boated a monster 6-7 smallmouth that leads competition for the Carhartt Big Bass Award, which earns winners a $500 gift certificate. Minor and Lanier are in the lead for the Nitro Big Bag Award and the $250 gift certificate that will accompany it.

The full field of 149 teams will take off from Whittaker Park Thursday at 5:30 a.m. ET with weigh-in scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The Top 12 duos will fish on Friday for cash and prizes.

LIVETARGET Releases New Ghost Tail Minnow with Injected Core Technology™ (ICT)

LIVETARGET Releases New Ghost Tail Minnow with Injected Core Technology™ (ICT)

[print_link]

A breakthrough in lure design allows anglers to Match-the-Hatch® like never before.

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (June 19, 2019) – LIVETARGET’s new Ghost Tail Minnow is a dropshot bait designed to mimic a thin profiled baitfish, such as a Minnow or Shiner feeding near bottom structure. Featuring the Company’s new Injected Core Technology (ICT), it offers an unmatched baitfish profile as life-like as you – or any hungry game fish – have ever seen.

LIVETARGET Ghost Tail Minnow (201) Silver/Blue

Typical dropshot baits are manufactured using a standard injection process.  The front end of the bait can be somewhat realistic; however, in order to generate the dropshot signature action, the tail shape needs to be long and narrow, which creates an overall unnatural profile, making game fish wary.

LIVETARGET’S solution is Injected Core Technology. A life-like Inner-Core is constructed with a realistic Minnow profile, detailed anatomy and vibrant metallic colors. The core is then encapsulated in a crystal clear, durable Exo-Skin, which generates the bait’s signature action and is less noticeable under water.  Game fish focus on the natural profile of the Minnow and are not alarmed by the transparent action-generating mechanics.

Watch the Ghost Tail Minnow dance beneath the surface and you’ll quickly notice the authentic flash as the light bounces off an anatomically accurate soft plastic body. Hold it in your fingers and life appears to pulse beneath its skin. Instantly, you realize that with superior detail, lateral lines and scale patterns, this is one lure that can really Match-the-Hatch®.

Next to the Ghost Tail Minnow, the flash of other soft plastic lures seems muted beneath the surface. Indeed, it’s the life-like ICT appearance that truly separates this entry from the competition. Quite simply, it’s a game changer in the world of dropshot baits.

Great looks are important, of course, but the Ghost Tail Minnow is also engineered to entice the big ones by perfectly matching a minnow’s natural movements. Its unique hydrodynamic tail generates a quivering finesse action, stabilizes the bait and keeps it horizontal – even in current – so the slightest twitch of the rod tip generates a genuine, true-to-life movement no matter the presentation method.

One of the most significant advantages of ICT is the ratio of plastic between the Inner-Core and Exo-Skin. The inner-core is much smaller than the overall cubic mass of the entire lure. That means anglers can present a smaller hatch size but still have the advantages of throwing a bigger bait. The Exo-Skin adds 30% more clear plastic which adds more weight, enabling anglers to use a larger hook, cast further, and feel more direct contact with the lure.  For the first time ever, anglers can fish smaller hatches for big bites.

Exceptionally versatile, you’ll find the Ghost Tail Minnow especially helpful when fishing under difficult conditions like approaching cold fronts, mid-summer heat waves or cloudy water where a little extra realism will surely help seal the deal. Jiggle them with a standard drop-shop rig, retrieve with a spring lock hook for fish suspended above the bottom, or slow roll them around structure with a jighead. A convenient hook channel keeps them weedless and improves hook-up ratios when these lures are rigged in a snag-free fashion.

Ghost Tail Minnows are available in 3-3/4”, 4-1/2” and 5” slow-sink sizes and 6 natural-themed color patterns with a MSRP of $9.99 USD (three or four baits depending on size). They come in clamshell packaging to protect against warping and distortion, and they work in both freshwater and saltwater environments. Pick up a few packs today and put yourself in position to keep scoring with the big ones no matter what surprises Mother Nature decides to send your way.

What a great day to have a fishing tournament!! 52 degrees in the am and about 84 in the pm with no rain, winds 0 to 10 and water temps around 78!!! Ya can’t get any better than that!! 62 teams, that qualified, fished the PBC Academy Sports & Outdoors $10K Spring Team Bass Trail Championship at Jordan. The lake level was about 2 foot above normal and the bass fishing was on fire!!! After the weighin the polygraph was given, and everyone was treated to ‘Decky’s Famous BBQ Sandwiches’ & drinks compliments of Triangle Trolling Motor’s owner Mark Nelson!! Then over $7,000 in door prizes, compliments of our great sponsors, were given away by drawing!!!!!

First time PBC Championship winners, veterans Mike Dinterman & Vernon Fleming, figured out the pattern and caught 5 huge bass weighing a total of 32.26 lbs. (heaviest bag of the year so far), which included a 8.39 pounder, to take 1st Place &

ATHENS, Ala. – William “Kip” Carter won the Bass Pro Shops Open Series Georgia Division tournament, held June 15th on Lake Oconee. Running out of Sugar Creek Marina in Buckhead, GA the Mansfield, GA angler caught five bass weighing 19.88 pounds. For the Boater Division victory, Carter took home a check for $2400 for his win.

“I was fishing topwater and flipping docks the first three hours and had about 14 pounds doing that. Then, around 10:45 am, I fished a deep spot I found last week and caught my two bigger fish, then went back to flipping docks and culled one more time on a jig.” Carter said.

In second for the boaters, Matt Henry of Milledgeville, GA landed a five-bass tournament limit going 17.10 pounds.

“I also caught my fish on topwater and flipping this morning. I did not fish clean today, lost a few big fish this morning and another late in the day. I stayed between the bridges today.” Henry said.

Scott Hayes of Newnan, GA took third for the boaters with five bass going 14.37 pounds.

“I caught my fish on a frog and a jig around docks. I fished mid-lake today.” Hayes said.
