New Z-Man® TicklerZ™ tones down fanfare, maximizes bites

A Simple Fish-Catching Plan

New Z-Man® TicklerZ™ tones down fanfare, maximizes bites

LADSON, SC (June 4, 2019) – Sometimes, the most alluring baits for bass and other species, by far, are the simplest in stature. The best minimalist baits don’t mimic anything specifically; they’re suggestive of aquatic life, approximating the size, silhouette and movements of a bite-sized critter.

The anatomical opposite of exacting, match-the-hatch profiles, bare-bones Ned Rig baits do one thing extraordinarily well: catch fish in assembly-line numbers. That’s the idea behind Z-Man’s fresh-from-the-molds TRD TicklerZ™. Put one in the water and there’s no denying its simple, elegant appeal to underwater predators.

Is this the best Ned Rig bait ever?

Ned Kehde and friends have devised some interesting rigging methods.

“What makes Ned Rig fishing so good is, well, nothing,” deadpans Brian (aka “B. Lat”) Latimer, winner of the 2019 FLW Tour event at Lake Seminole.

Lest you misinterpret B. Lat’s take, first realize the Z-Man pro is actually a major Ned Rig fan. But he feels the key to sleek baits like the TicklerZ is its minimalist physique, as well as its buoyancy, which essentially breathes life into the presentation, sans angler intervention.

“The TRD TicklerZ is my new favorite Ned bait—super unassuming, but with just enough subtle, bite-inducing appendages. It’s similar to the Hula StickZ™— my other favorite finesse bait— only in a shorter, stubbier package and with a smooth-skin texture.

“I can’t tell you how to fish it, because you can’t fish it wrong,” B. Lat shrugs. “The more complicated you make the baits and the retrieves, the less it resembles the technique that catches bass even when they don’t want to eat.”

The culmination of nearly a decade of testing various Ned Rig profiles, bait designer Drew Reese says the TRD TicklerZ may be the perfect finesse bait. Reese, exceptional angler and co-architect of modern finesse methods, calls the TicklerZ perhaps the best Ned Rig bait ever made.

Master lure designer Drew Reese caught 57 species of salt- and freshwater fish on a single TRD TicklerZ.

“Last year, I brought a few of the prototypes on my travels to Lake of the Woods, Ontario and the Florida Keys and caught fifty-seven different species on one bait,” Reese declared.

Beyond the bait’s incredible durability, Reese says designing the bait with fewer, sparser legs allow them to spread out and produce much greater action and freedom to quiver. “Put the TicklerZ on a Finesse ShroomZ™ jighead and let it go to the bottom. Watch how the tentacles never entirely stop moving,” Reese observes.

“I spend ninety-percent of the time imitating what a crayfish does: pump the bait up and stop to let it sit. The variables are length and intensity of the pull and the duration of the pause. When in doubt, simply letting it hit bottom and sit always triggers a ton of bites.”

Reese also brings to attention the TicklerZ’ smooth epidermis, interrupted only by a set of tiny pimples. “They approximate the bumps on a crayfish carapace and produce little air bubbles as the bait moves.

“We made this bait to be supremely appealing to bass and a ton of other species, freshwater and salt,” adds Reese. “It uses an extra soft ElaZtech® formula and light salt impregnation that compels bass to eat the bait and hold it. It’s also super buoyant, particularly in the tentacles, which keeps them up and moving around.”

Meanwhile, another migrating angler who splits time between bass- and walleye-rich Lake of the Woods, Ontario and southern U.S. Bassmaster Elite Series events, Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson says the TRD TicklerZ has been a revelation for both smallmouth and spotted bass. “Earlier this spring, we crushed the spotted bass with a Ned rigged TicklerZ at Lake Lanier. Came home and cleaned up on big smallmouths with the same combo on Lake of the Woods. For guiding kids and first-time anglers, it’s like fishing livebait, because there’s no wrong way to work it. That’s a sign you’ve got a sweet bait tied on.”

Gussy, who likens minimalist offerings such as a marabou jig or TRD TicklerZ to “an after-dinner mint” for bass, rigs the latter on a Z-Man Finesse ShroomZ jighead. Around heavy cover, docks and vegetation, he bulks up to the new Pro ShroomZ™ jighead, which sports a heavier duty jig-hook.

“For me, 90-percent of bites occur within the first 10-seconds of the bait hitting bottom,” he notes. “In clearer water, bass swim over to see the bait falling through the water column. When I click the bail and first move my rod is when bass often wolf it up. After I’ve bounced it ten feet or so, I’ll reel right in and pitch it out again.”

The drop is key, Gussy says. But so is the on-bottom pause, allowing the bait’s buoyancy to make it sit upright, tentacles gently flaring. He adds that the TicklerZ’ buoyancy also keeps anglers out of rocky snags and annoying re-ties.

“Red or yellow braided line, which floats and acts like a strike indicator, keys the presentation,” Gussy believes. “The line stops and collapses when the bait hits bottom, and it twitches or pops when a bass bites.

“What I also like about the TicklerZ is I can pitch it to a target on bottom and know it’ll fall perfectly straight and hit the bullseye, every time. Rig the bait perfectly straight on the jighead and it’ll produce some crazy results.”

Sculpted, poured and packaged at Z-Man headquarters in Ladson, South Carolina, USA, the lightly-salted, 2.75-inch TRD TicklerZ comes in 18 radical color patterns, including exclusive Sprayed Grass, Twilight and Mood Ring. MSRP is $4.49 for an 8-pack of baits. Available in July. For more information visit www.zmanfishing.com or Z-Man at the upcoming ICAST Show, booth #5118.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY GRABS DAY ONE LEAD AT YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ON POTOMAC RIVER PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

[print_link]

CHARLES COUNTY, Md. (June 4, 2019) – The University of West Virginia duo of Nolan Minor of Charlottesville, West Virginia, and Thomas Raines of Oxon Hill, Maryland, grabbed the early lead Tuesday after Day One of the 2019 YETI FLW College Fishing National Championship on the Potomac River presented by Lowrance. The Mountaineers team brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 18 pounds, 5 ounces, giving them a 9-ounce cushion over the second place team of Jarrett Martin and Nickolas Marsh from Michigan’s Adrian College.

“We fished north of takeoff, mainly fishing around the bridge area and just looking for docks, grass – anything that looked good,” said Raines, a senior majoring in landscape architecture. “We hit about seven different areas and it was all new water, nothing we practiced.”

“We caught around 12 keepers,” added Minor, a junior majoring in marketing. “We didn’t have a good practice, so it kind of allowed us to just fish free. If something looked good, we fished it. I wouldn’t call it junk fishing, but it was pretty close to it. We caught several 2½-pound fish today and on one spot we pulled up and caught four between 2½ to 3 pounds in 10 minutes. We hadn’t practiced there, and we left them biting hoping that they might help us later.”

Although the duo was tight-lipped about specific presentations, they did mention that they caught their fish using just two different baits. Their limit was anchored by a big largemouth estimated to weigh between 5 to 6 pounds.

“We feel good about where we are at,” Minor said. “I’d like to figure out that big bite again, because that fish was not doing what the others were.”

“We definitely laid off on some spots, so I’m hoping that we can have another good day tomorrow,” Raines went on to say. “We’re going to fish everything that we fished today and our backup plan is to hit our practice holes if we have to.”

The three-day event features the top college bass fishing teams from across the nation competing in an internationally-televised no-entry fee tournament for the top prize of up to $50,000, including a new Ranger Z175 boat with a 115-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and automatic entry into the 2019 FLW Cup, the world championship of bass fishing, held August 9-11 on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

The full field of 148 teams compete on Tuesday and Wednesday, with only the top-10 – based on two-day cumulative weight – advancing to Championship Thursday. The National Champions will be crowned Thursday based on the cumulative three-day weight total.

The top 10 teams after Day One on the Potomac River are:

1st:  West Virginia University – Nolan Minor, Charlottesville, Va., and Thomas Raines, Oxon Hill, Md., five bass, 18-5
2nd:  Adrian College – Jarrett Martin, Gallipolis, Ohio, and Nickolas Marsh, Walled Lake, Mich., five bass, 17-12
3rd:  Bethel University – Tristan McCormick, Burns, Tenn., and Dakota Pierce, Ava,  Mo., five bass, 17-7
4th:  SUNY-Environmental Science and Forestry – Patrick Durand, Cherry Hill, N.J., and Benjamin Schultes, Ontario, N.Y., five bass, 17-2
5th:  University of Tennessee – Jordan Burdette, Knoxville, Tenn., and Saxton Long, Pulaski, Tenn., five bass, 16-15
6th:  Sam Houston State University – Dillon Harrell, New Caney, Texas, and Taylor Harp, Porter, Texas, five bass, 16-15
7th:  Murray State University – Adam Puckett and Blake Albertson, both of Bloomington, Ind., five bass, 16-13
8th:  University of Montevallo – J.T. Russell, McCalla, Ala., five bass, 16-7

BRANSON, Mo. (June 4, 2019) – After four days of competition on Table Rock Lake in Missouri’s Ozark Mountains, the Major League Fishing® (MLF) Bass Pro Tour Bad Boy Mowers Stage Seven Presented by Covercraft has reached the make-or-break point for 40 of the anglers in the 80-man field.

Tuesday’s Knockout Round – which will take place from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. CT on Table Rock Lake – includes the Top 20 finishers from two competition groups, many of whom have taken turns breaking records the past two weeks on this impoundment of the White River.

Knockout Weights Back To Zero

The 40 anglers fishing in today’s Knockout Round will start from zero. That means that the astounding two-day weights compiled by anglers like Jacob Wheeler (160 pounds, 1 ounce) and Shin Fukae (143-1) in the Knockout and Elimination rounds are moot: the semi-final day of competition is now an 8-hour scramble for the 10 spots in the Championship Round.

“All any of us can do is go out there and fish our game,” said Wheeler, who set Bass Pro Tour records for both weight and most fish caught in two rounds (108). “I don’t know how many people in the other group have been fishing my best stuff this week, so I don’t know how small it’s going to fish. This is a giant lake with a ton of fish, but your key areas are still important. I think it’s going to take between 55 and 75 pounds to make the 10 cut.”

Elimination Round 2: the return of KVD

Monday’s second Elimination Round saw a familiar face at the top of the 40-man Group B standings: Kevin VanDam. The Table Rock veteran scaled 69-14 to go with the 54-0 he caught in the Shotgun Round for a two-day total of 123-14. Scott Suggs was right on VanDam’s heels with 122-6, followed by Brandon Palaniuk (117-13) and Todd Faircloth (115-9).

This is VanDam’s second Knockout Round of the season.

“I see these threads on social media asking ‘What’s wrong with KVD, what’s wrong with KVD?’ I can tell you right now, everybody is fixing to see what’s right with KVD,” said MLF NOW! live stream analyst JT Kenney. “Kevin knows this lake about as well as anybody alive, and it’s setting up really well for him.”

Elimination Round 1: Wheeler dominated
MLF pro Jacob Wheeler dominated Group A’s Elimination Round with an impressive two-day total of 108 scorable bass totaling 160-01. Eyes will be on him to see if he can maintain the momentum to advance to the Championship Round and a Stage Seven win. (Click to enlarge)

One look at the results of the first Elimination Round of the event (held Sunday, June 2) will tell you all you need to know about how prolific Table Rock’s bass fishery is: Not only did Wheeler and Fukae combine for nearly 200 fish and over 300 pounds of spotted and largemouth bass, but 12 of the anglers who advanced to the semi-final cleared the 100-pound mark.

Wheeler was untouchable, though. The Tennessee pro took the lead from Fukae in the third period of their Shotgun Round, and then proceeded to surpass the previous two-day weight record by more than 25 pounds (Cliff Pace’s 134-13 in Stage Six). Wheeler is on track to also beat the event total-weight record set by Aaron Martens in his victory in that same event (Martens scaled 283-4).

Looking ahead to final two days

Weights will be zeroed for the 40-angler Knockout Round, making the Knockout a one-day scramble. The Top 10 anglers in the Knockout Round will advance to the Championship Round on Wednesday, June 5.

How, When and Where to Watch Today

Competition begins at 12 p.m. CT, with live, official scoring available via SCORETRACKER® on MajorLeagueFishing.com and on the MLF app. The
MLF NOW! live stream begins at 11:55 a.m. CT with coverage of Period 1, with Steven “Lurch” Scott and Rob Newell calling the live action. Full coverage continues at 2:30 p.m., when Chad McKee, JT Kenney, Marty Stone, and Natalie Dillon pick up the commentary and analysis until lines out at 8 p.m.

There will be no Berkley Postgame Show until Wednesday’s Championship Round.

SAM RAYBURN RESERVOIR TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY MERCURY

SAM RAYBURN RESERVOIR TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY MERCURY

[print_link]

BROOKELAND, Texas (June 4, 2019) – Top bass anglers from around the region are set to compete on Sam Rayburn Reservoir June 13-15 at the Costa Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Series Southwestern Division tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir presented by Mercury. The three-day tournament will feature a field of more than 200 pros and co-anglers vying for the top prize package of up to $92,000, including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Mercury outboard in the Pro Division.

“Anglers are going to catch them doing a lot of different things. I think we’re going to see flipping, as well as throwing crankbaits and a worm as primary tactics,” said Strike King pro Andrew Upshaw of Tulsa, Oklahoma, who has three career top-10 finishes on Sam Rayburn Reservoir in FLW Series competition. “They’ve had a lot of rain, so the water is high and up into the bushes. The fishing is still going to be pretty good, though.”

Upshaw said flipping bushes with a Texas-rigged Strike King Rage Bug will be a good bet, with crankbaits and worms also being options in those areas. For anglers working deeper on ledges and points, he cited 6XD crankbaits or Thumper Worms as good choices.

“When the water is high, pretty much all of the lake produces because it puts new cover in the water that the fish might not have seen,” said Upshaw. “We should see the ledges on the south end of the lake in play, as well as the flooded bushes and willow trees on the north end. Covering a lot of water will be key. I think whoever wins it will have a couple of different deals going on.”

Upshaw went on to predict that it will take a three-day total around 60 pounds to win the event.

Anglers will take off from Umphrey Family Pavilion, located at 5438 Rural Route 255, in Brookeland, at 6 a.m. CDT each day of competition. Weigh-ins each day will also be held at the park beginning at 2 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The tournament is being hosted by the Jasper-Lake Sam Rayburn Area Chamber of Commerce.

In Costa FLW Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event. At Sam Rayburn Reservoir, pros will fish for a top prize of up to $92,000 including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup qualified. Co-anglers will cast for a brand new Ranger Z175 boat with a 115-horsepower Mercury outboard, and $5,000 if Ranger Cup qualified.
