Sportfishing Industry Announces New Award for Writers Who Inspire Recreational Fishing Participation

Sportfishing Industry Announces New Award for Writers Who Inspire Recreational Fishing Participation

St. Croix Rods is the inaugural sponsor of the 2019 awards

Alexandria, VA (May 31, 2019)  Writers who promote recreational fishing could come away with cash awards and national recognition through the American Sportfishing Association’s (ASA) new Angling Awareness Awards. These awards recognize writers who inspire people to participate in recreational fishing.

ASA created the Angling Awareness Awards to support the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation’s (RBFF) industry-wide effort, called “60 in 60,” to increase the current 49.1 million U.S. anglers to 60 million in 60 months, or by 2021.

St. Croix Rods Inaugural Awards Sponsor

St. Croix Rods, a family-owned business headquartered in Park Falls, Wis. and a long-time ASA member, is the sponsor of this new awards program. St. Croix manufacturers both conventional and fly rods in their Wisconsin facility.

“For over 70 years, St. Croix Rods has been committed to growing participation in fishing at all levels – weekenders, families, competitive anglers and folks who pack a rod to bank fish after work,” said Jesse Simpkins, director of Marketing for St. Croix Rods. “When we heard that ASA was going to promote the 60 in 60 program through a writer’s contest, St. Croix absolutely wanted to be part of it. It’s through their passionate words that current anglers, people returning to the sport and newcomers get motivated to hit the water.”

ASA Angling Awareness Awards

The awards program includes up to three endemic awards for pieces published in platforms that speak directly to anglers as well as outdoor lifestyle outlets; and up to three non-endemic awards, for pieces published in platforms not specifically geared to fishing or outdoor activities.

The awards recognize writers who write the most effective consumer-facing content that focuses on: 1) recruitment of new anglers into the sport; 2) retention of current anglers; or 3) the reactivation, or re-engagement, of lapsed anglers into the sport. These three efforts are known within the recreational fishing industry as “R3.”

The awards will be decided by a panel of volunteer judges.

The deadline for submissions is July 1, 2019.

Recognizing the Winners

Up to six prizes will be given, with up to five writers each receiving $300 cash awards, plaques and a customized St. Croix rod.

The Grand Prize winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize, a recognition plaque, a customized St. Croix rod and an invitation to attend ASA’s 2019 Sportfishing Summit which includes registration and housing assistance. This year’s Summit is being held October 8-11, at Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Wash. The award will be presented on Thursday evening, October 10, during ASA’s annual awards dinner.

PENNSYLVANIA’S THOMPSON OUT FRONT AT T-H MARINE BFL ALL-AMERICAN ON THE POTOMAC RIVER PRESENTED BY GENERAL TIRE

PENNSYLVANIA’S THOMPSON OUT FRONT AT T-H MARINE BFL ALL-AMERICAN ON THE POTOMAC RIVER PRESENTED BY GENERAL TIRE

Virginia’s Dacey Leads Co-angler Field

[print_link]

CHARLES COUNTY, Md. (May 30, 2019) – Boater Joseph Thompson of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, took the early lead Thursday at the 36th annual T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) All-American tournament on the Potomac River presented by General Tire with five bass weighing 16 pounds, 8 ounces. Right behind Thompson in second place is Doug Thompson of Mabelvale, Arkansas, who brought five bass to the scale good for 15 pounds, 15 ounces.

The T-H Marine BFL All-American features a field of the top 98 boaters and co-anglers from across the 24-division BFL circuit competing for a grand prize of up to $120,000 in the Boater Division and $60,000 in the Co-angler Division. The top boater will receive an invitation to compete for bass fishing’s most coveted prize – the 2019 FLW Cup – Aug. 9-11 on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Thompson said he fished five key spots today, three of which he rotated through for the majority of his day.

“I went to my first spot that I had really big fish at in pre-practice,” said Thompson, who has six career top-10 finishes and one win on the Potomac River in BFL competition. “I spent a lot of time trying to make that spot happen and it just didn’t.

“I left and bounced around the river. I pretty much stuck to my main spots and took what the river gave me,” continued Thompson. “There’s a variety of different patterns and things going on.”

Thompson said that he caught around 12 to 15 keepers, adding that he had a limit fairly early and was culling by 9 a.m.

“I culled probably three or four times, but just for ounces – except for the couple of big ones I caught. I had two over 4 pounds,” said Thompson.

Thompson went on to say that he feels good about what awaits him on Friday.

“My two primary spots I left, and I feel that there’s still fish there. They’re places I hardly ever see anybody fish,” said Thompson. “I was only able to get one today at my big fish spot – it’s gnarly, gnarly stuff. I’m going to start there tomorrow and see if I can get a big one right away, then run around and try to find 2½-pounders. It’s hard to get a big fish right now.”

The top 10 boaters after day one on the Potomac River are:

1st:          Joseph Thompson, Coatesville, Pa., five bass, 16-8

2nd:         Doug Thompson, Mabelvale, Ark., five bass, 15-15

Television coverage of the 2019 BFL All-American on the Potomac River will premiere in the fall of 2019. The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show airs each Saturday night at 7 p.m. EST and is broadcast to more than 63 million cable, satellite and telecommunications households in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean on the World Fishing Network (WFN), the leading entertainment destination and digital resource for anglers throughout North America. The popular FLW Live on-the-water program will air Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1 of the BFL All-American. FLW Live features live action from the boats of the tournament’s top anglers each day. Host Travis Moran will be joined by FLW Tour pro Luke Dunkin to break down the extended action each day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. On-the-water broadcasts will be live streamed on FLWFishing.com, the FLW YouTube channel and the FLW Facebook page.

The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2019 BFL All-American will be held May 30-June 1 at the Potomac River in Marbury, Maryland, and is hosted by the Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism and the Commissioners of Charles County. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

Fishing Creature Finesse Baits: 3 Ways To Rig A Sukoshi Bug – MTB

Fishing Creature Finesse Baits: 3 Ways To Rig A Sukoshi Bug

[print_link]

10,000 Fish is a new, JDM Inspired brand that will serve as the conduit connecting high-end Japanese inspired designs with engaged North American anglers. This all-new brand is brought to you by the team at Catch Co. so you know it’s going to kick bass.

Sukoshi Bug
10,000 Fish Sukoshi Bug
2.5” Inches
6 Bugs Per Pack
Available In 8 Colorways

The first product in the 10,000 Fish line-up is our Sukoshi Bug – Meaning ‘A Little’ in Japanese, the Sukoshi bug is the ideal soft bait for adding to the back of your favorite Ned Rig set-up. Designed with our proprietary Stretch-X material, this bug floats, stays pinned to your rig, and stretches like crazy.

The 2.5” plastic comes available in 8 mouth-watering colors to help match the hatch in your local waterways.

Where The Sukoshi Shines

Sukoshi Bug
Largemouth can’t get enough of the bug.

The ideal bait for targeting clear water or pressured fish, the Sukoshi Bug pairs perfectly with any Ned Rig style jighead. The ribbed body design combined with it’s eight dangling tentacles allows for a slower rate of fall compared to your typical ned rig bait. The added ridges and tentacles give the bait extra action on the way down while also serving as little pockets to store fish attracting scent.

Sleeper Sukoshi Bug Techniques

The Sukoshi Bug paired with a Molix Finesse Jig

In addition to the ned rig, try rigging the Sukoshi Bug on the back of a finesse jig or while fishing a mini finesse Carolina Rig (AKA The Mojo Rig). The added buoyancy from the Stretch-X plastic keeps the Sukoshi Bug floating which is ideal on either set-up. The ability to float while at rest helps the Sukoshi Bug mimic the defensive posture of a crawfish which bass really seem to like.

Rigging The Sukoshi Bug

Sukoshi Bug
Rain or shine. The bug gets it done.

Spinning tackle will be the best option for both castability and sensitivity when fishing this bait. I like to use 10-15lb braided main line attached to a 6-8 pound fluorocarbonleader. The added castability and sensitivity from the braid help me detect bites and bottom contour with ease. The abrasion resistance and clear nature of the fluorocarbon fishing line help prevent break offs and spooking finicky fish. Any good drop shot or hair jig rod will work well with this bait.

Sukoshi Bug FAQ’S

Sukoshi Bug
Available in the bass classic Blue Craw pattern.

What is the Sukoshi Bug made of?
The Sukoshi Bug is made from a proprietary plastic material that we’ve dubbed ‘Stretch X’. It’s insanely strong and allows your bait to stay pinned on your rig, stretch like and crazy, and hold up after continued fish catches.

What Does Sukoshi Mean?
Sukoshi means ‘a little bit’ in Japanese which we feel accurately represents this micro bass snack!

Will it damage other soft plastics?

The unique blend of the plastic materials will damage other soft plastic baits so storing your Stretch-X plastic baits in a safe place is a good idea.

Does It Actually float?
Yes! It’s completely buoyant!

Modern Swimbait Miracle

Z-Man® bulks up its dynamic DieZel MinnowZwith new 5” and 7” sizes

LADSON, SC (May 29, 2019) – It’s one of the great mysteries of our time . . . or, at least, a bit of an angling enigma: How exactly can a single swimbait can be so supernaturally soft, full of energy and fish-appeal, yet so tough and long-lasting at the same time?

Thankfully, you don’t have to solve the secret of Z-Man’s extraordinary ElaZtech material— or a bait like the new-classic DieZel MinnowZ— to catch fish with it. The easy-to-activate swimbait does that pretty much by itself. And it’s been so good to so many anglers that recently, Z-Man cut new molds for two larger sizes, in order to meet demand.

Originally crafted around a multipurpose 4-inch framework, the DieZel MinnowZ now comes in larger 5- and 7-inch body sculpts. “The DieZel MinnowZ is our most versatile swimbait, a bonafide fish catcher, and certainly a top seller,” notes Daniel Nussbaum, President of Z-Man Fishing. “The upsized profiles and increased thump of the new 5- and 7-inch sizes make them super-appealing to virtually all large predators, from striped bass in the Northeast, all the way to barramundi in Australia.”

“I’ve been really stoked to put these bigger DieZel MinnowZ in the water,” says Major League Fishing Tour angler, Luke Clausen. “Upsizing this proven profile means all the bait’s action and other great attributes get amped up another notch.”

Among a host of talents and fine-tuned traits, Clausen points out one key to the bait’s winning ways. “Z-Man spent a lot of time shaping and tweaking this bait so the tail would self-activate at any retrieve speed. The DieZel MinnowZ has a slightly flattened, narrow profile that transitions to an oversized paddletail; this, in part, makes the bait swim with high energy. Getting the tail to kick and vibrate requires very little forward momentum, or speed. The harder you pull it, the more aggressively it thumps.”

Clausen’s quick to pin down his favorite application. “Rig a 5-inch DieZel on the back of a swimjig or ChatterBait® for a bigger profile and bolder action that attracts 8-pounders,” he says. Clausen also calls out the bait’s performance on a 6/0 HeadlockZ HD™ jighead or ChinlockZ SWS™ weighted swimbait hook, or even an umbrella rig.

“One swimbait can easily hold up all day long, crush a dozen or more fish, and keep on ticking.”

Though the DieZel MinnowZ has emerged as an archetypal swimbait for bass, its original fans throw it in the shallow salt. “Put a DieZel MinnowZ on the back of a HeadlockZ HD jighead and everything chews on it.” says Captain C.A. Richardson, Z-Man fan and exceptional inshore guide. “The 5-inch size is money for big redfish. Its slender profile moves cleanly through vegetation, such as turtle- or eelgrass on skinny water flats.

“You’d never believe how fish can get so tuned in to the mere 1-inch increase in bait size,” asserts Richardson, host of Flats Class TV. “It’s about matching prevailing baitfish size, for sure. But the 5-inch DieZel will be a big player for me, too, because it throws more water and gives off a larger silhouette. It’s also a key presentation in heavy current, rigged with a heavier Redfish Eye™ Jighead. The Redfish Eye jig has a longer hook-shank that produces exceptional hook-ups.”

For tarpon, cobia and big snook in “the passes,” Richardson confidently wields the big 7-inch DieZel Minnow. “Rigged on an 8/0 HeadlockZ HD jig or ChinlockZ SWS weighted hook, the bait really announces its presence with authority. Big angry predators don’t like it in their neighborhood,”

Sharing the same meticulous traits as its original 4-inch counterpart, 5- and 7-inch DieZel MinnowZ employ a hook-guiding belly slot that greatly eases weedless rigging. A split dorsal fin aligns the hook where it exits and partially hides the hookpoint. The bait’s true-to-life preyfish profile and molded scale patterning intimate a wide spectrum of forage species. A slightly flattened body enhances the illusion and makes the swimbait move with an accentuated rolling action—all driven by its oversized paddle tail.

Composed of Z-Man’s soft, durable 10X Tough ElaZtech, the new 5- and 7-inch DieZel MinnowZ swims at all retrieve speeds and withstands the abuse of the toughest fresh- and saltwater predators—an exceptional alternative to traditional plastisol swimbaits that fail or fall apart after just a fish or two. Made in the USA, the DieZel MinnowZ feature over 30 expert colors and three sizes. Four-packs of the new 5-inch size are priced at $4.99 MSRP; 3-packs of the 7-inch DieZel MinnowZ run $6.99 MSRP – both new sizes arrive in stores in July.
