‘An Exercise In Randomness’ Gives Cox Lead In Bassmaster Open At Chickamauga
DAYTON, Tenn. — Consistency eluded John Cox, but the Debary, Fla., pro picked his way to a five-bass limit of 26 pounds, 11 ounces that leads the first round of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open on Lake Chickamauga.
Like many of his competitors, Cox lamented a distinct lack of current — pretty much the spark that ignites a late-spring bite on the Tennessee River. Knowing that the day’s sweltering heat and mostly slow water would have the fish in a lethargic mood, Cox figured that mobility was his best weapon.
“I started up shallow and I could instantly tell nothing good was happening. There wasn’t any movement, and it was really still,” he said. “That’s when I started going out (into deeper water) and bouncing around. It was slack out there, too, but then I caught a big one and I’m like, ‘Oh, okay.’ But then I fished for another hour and got nothing.”
Cox worked his way into other areas and tried different depths, catching heavy bass on back-to-back casts in a shallow spot and two more solid keepers, one after the other, in a place he had not tried in practice.
Describing his day as “an exercise in randomness,” Cox said he simply focused on persevering in hopes of running into an active fish.
Cox said he avoided the traditional offshore ledge patterns for which Chickamauga is famous, as he’s never felt comfortable with that style of fishing. He ended up catching his fish over river flats and sandbars in 7 to 12 feet. He caught his fish on a mix of crankbaits, swimbaits and a jig.
Known mostly for his shallow-water prowess, Cox joked that fishing off the bank felt odd.
“It was weird for me — I couldn’t touch the bottom where I was fishing today,” he said.
Buddy Gross of Chickamauga, Ga., is in second place with 23-8. He got off to a quick start numerically, but the quality was another story.
“It took all day to get my weight,” Gross said. “I had a small limit of 11 or 12 pounds shortly after I first started and then just culled up slowly throughout the day. I think the afternoon bite is better. I have a later check-in tomorrow, so I think it’s going to be good for me.
“I grew up fishing here, and it’s taken a lot of my ‘juice’ to get what I had today. I have about as much left as I fished today, but it’s not easy. The ledges are getting hammered. We’ve had so many tournaments that the pressure has the fish pushed off.”
Gross said he caught his bass in 10 to 15 feet with deeper water close by. Most of his bites were on reaction baits, but the tough conditions required him to catch a couple of his heavier bass on a dropshot with a Zoom Z-Too in the morning dawn color.
Stephen Mui of Bartlett, Ill., is in third place with 21-6. Making his day was an 8-pound, 6-ounce Chickamauga largemouth that he caught as a result of a momentary decision he made while moving to another fishing area.
“I was running down the lake, doing about 60, and I decided to pull up on this spot where I had caught a 14-incher in practice,” Mui said. “I know from past experience that ledge fishing can really turn on midday on deep spots like this. I stopped to fish, and on my third cast, that big fish hit.”
Mui started shallow with a topwater lure and then moved to ledges, where he caught most of his fish on crankbaits. His big bass bit a shaky head with a Missile Baits Tomahawk worm.
Mui’s kicker is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors.
Charles Fochtman of Moneta, Va., leads the co-angler division with 14-15. He found success when his pro partner was finally able to access a small grassline in a shallow pocket.
“We had a late start, so the first grassbed we fished had five other boats already on it and was kind of worn out by the time we got there,” Fochtman said. “We had another little spot about 500 yards down, so we waited until everybody left, and then we went there and caught all our fish.”
Fochtman’s weapon was a 3/8-ounce ChatterBait paired with a 3.8 Keitech swimbait. Bringing his bait across a small hole in the middle of the grassbed was the key to getting bites.
John Goul of Philadelphia, Miss., holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with a 9-7.
Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6:15 a.m. CT at Dayton Boat Dock. The weigh-in will be held at the dock at 2:15 p.m.
The event is hosted by Fish Dayton.

Gill Pro Angler Profile: Fred Roumbanis |
|
MLF Angler Chooses Gill for Versatility and Excellence in Tournament Wear |
|
Buford, GA (May 23, 2019) – Among Gill’s diverse roster of pro bass anglers representing the B.A.S.S. Elite Series, FLW, and Major League Fishing (MLF), is Fred “Boom Boom” Roumbanis. Now fishing the MLF, Roumbanis has four wins, 23 top 10s, and 40 Top 20s – with $1.5 million in career winnings—to his credit. “Not only is Fred one of the best pro bass anglers on the water,” says Tim Golden, U.S. National Sales Manager, Gill Fishing. “He’s an excellent promoter and has a very keen sense for contributing product design ideas that can help us continue to excel at making the best fishing wear on the water.” Golden continues: “The fact that we have Fred on our team is a testament to the quality and confidence these anglers have in Gill. I have worked closely with Roumbanis, and I can tell you he only expects top quality products. We are honored he chose Gill.” |
|

Although this is Roumbanis’ first year with Gill, he’s already been through many winter and spring events in the apparel, ultimately putting it through the challenging real-world tests that pro bass anglers face each and every day. “Gill wear is simply the best apparel in our sport,” says Roumbanis. “From the Tournament Jacket and Bib Trousers I’ve been wearing to the layering technologies that kept me warm this winter—to the Expedition shorts and various gloves options—there’s simply nothing like Gill apparel available for anglers elsewhere.” In particular, Roumbanis points out he was very pleased with the Vortex hood in the Tournament Jacket. “Any other jacket hood is going to pull at your neck when you’re running around. The wind blows through the Vortex hood and you can leave it on loosely, hat on, everything… I was cruising at 65 or 70 mph with absolutely no problems in the rain and staying absolutely dry. Plus, the sleeves are a little longer so they aren’t restricting when you’re casting; instead, you just stay really comfortable. Same thing with the Tournament Bib Trousers—they were super comfortable and kept me dry.” |
|
Roumbanis is also a fan of the men’s Hybrid Down Jacket, which he says gave him the right level of layering and warmth under the Tournament Jacket during his winter tournament schedule. “While it’s a great jacket to keep you warm, it’s also sporty and makes the perfect looking jacket to wear when going out to dinner. That’s pretty cool.” “The gloves are awesome, too—and they have so many different types to choose from. There are options to wear when I’m running in the boat, options to wear fishing, to models that provide excellent sun protection.” While Roumbanis has been extremely pleased with all the Gill apparel he’s been wearing, he’s super excited for next generation products which he will start wearing soon, too. “Everything I’ve seen in the new Fusion suit looks absolutely incredible and I can’t wait to wear it on tour. It’s really hard for me to believe that Gill has made something even better than the Tournament family wear but apparently that’s the case.” To learn more about Gill’s fishing rainwear and additional apparel, visit www.gillfishing.com. |

CHESAPEAKE BAY READIES FOR WEEKEND OF FLW YOUTH BASS-FISHING TOURNAMENTS
YETI FLW College Fishing tournament set for Friday, Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Open tournament to follow Saturday
[print_link]
BEL AIR, Md. (May 21, 2019) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) is set to visit Harford County next week, May 31- June 1, with the YETI FLW College Fishing tournament at the Chesapeake Bay presented by Bass Pro Shops and the Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Open at the Chesapeake Bay presented by Costa. The tournaments, hosted by Visit Harford, will showcase some of the top young anglers from across the region competing for cash and prizes and angling for their chance to advance to the FLW College Fishing National Championship and High School Fishing National Championship events.
“The fishing has been really good on the Chesapeake Bay,” said FLW Tour pro Kurt Mitchell of Milford, Delaware, who has two top-10 finishes in FLW competition. “There isn’t a ton of grass at the moment, but by the time the tournament rolls around the pads and grass will be coming up. Lately they’ve been catching them off of wood and docks. I think the pads will be a big deal, and the grass is always a big player – especially in the Susquehanna Flats.
“The one thing about the Flats is that there are plenty of bass up there but you can spend all day up there and never find them,” Mitchell continued. “The Northeast River has the most bass in it, and it’s easy to catch them. I think both areas will see a lot of competitors in these two events.”
Mitchell predicted that reaction baits would be a strong choice for tournament anglers – swimjigs, ChatterBaits and buzzbaits – and said that if the pads were ready a frog could come into play.
“If I were fishing, I’d have a bluegill-patterned swimjig tied on with a Strike King Rage Menace trailer,” Mitchell said. “The key will be finding the milfoil and hydrilla – the right type of grass.”
Mitchell went on to predict that the winning teams would need to bring 23 to 25 pounds to the scale.
“The Chesapeake Bay has some really big bass in it – I’ve caught a few 30+ pound five-bass limits there,” Mitchell said. “Somebody is going to get on them and I think we’ll see some big bass in these events.”
The college anglers will kick off competition on Friday, May 31, at 6:30 a.m. EDT at Flying Point Park, located at 511 Kennard Ave. in Havre de Grace, Maryland. The weigh-in will be held at the park on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The high school anglers will then compete on Saturday, June 1, launching at 6 a.m. from the park and weighing in at 2:30 p.m. All takeoffs and weigh-ins are free to attend and open to the public, and will be streamed live online at FLWFishing.com.
YETI FLW College Fishing teams compete in three regular-season qualifying tournaments in one of five conferences – Central, Northern, Southern, Southeastern and Western. All participants must be registered, full-time students at a college, university or community college and members of a college fishing club that is recognized by their school. The top 10 teams from each division’s three regular-season tournaments and the top 20 teams from the annual FLW College Fishing Open will advance to the 2020 FLW College Fishing National Championship. Additional teams will qualify for the National Championship if the field size in regular-season events exceeds 100 boats. The Potomac River and Marbury, Maryland, will play host to the 2019 FLW College Fishing National Championship, June 4-6, 2019.
The Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Open tournaments are free, two-person (team) events for students in grades 7-12 and open to any FLW and Student Angler Federation-affiliated high school clubs. The top 10 percent of teams at each Open event along with the TBF High School Fishing state championships will advance to the 2019 High School Fishing National Championship on Pickwick Lake in June. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.

Old Style is New Again
The Jaw Jacker Balsa Crankbait
by Bruce Callis Jr
[print_link]
Crankbaits are some of the best lures to catch bass, and especially big bass. But what makes a good crankbait? The paint scheme? The hooks? The lip? Or what it is made of? Actually, it is a combination of a lot of things. The main thing is the body and what it is made of, for different design shapes and materials create the action of the bait.
Prior to the introduction of fishing lures made from balsa, baits were made from hardwoods. They worked great and were durable, but they lacked the desired life-like swimming action. And then came balsa wood and lures took on a new life.

Balsa wood comes from the very fast growing balsa tree which is grown almost exclusively within the rain forests of South America. It is a super light softwood that has very low moisture content and proves tremendous buoyancy in water. While this is in many ways a perfect material to replicate the authentic action of bait fish, it also requires the lure be weighted or combined with other hardwood strips to provide stability of flotation and enhanced durability so that the lure can be easily casted.
I attended the East Tennessee Fishing Show and got to meet Rob Cochran of Jaw Jacker Lures. They are handcrafted using only the finest components, such as AAA Balsa, Lexan and Circuit Board for their lips and bodies. He explained the difference in balsa baits to hard plastics and how balsa baits can outshine all others at times. Their unique ability to back up quickly can produce some bone crushing strikes and help the bait work in and through laydowns much easier. He also explained that balsa baits are also a little more fragile than plastic baits, so do not smack them off the water to try to clean off grass or slime. Doing so could result in breaking the bill off the crankbait or even splitting the body itself. The rounded body baits are the shallowest running while the flat sided baits tend to run the deepest.
With all this in mind, I gave them a real workout, putting them through some of the best test, and sometimes worse fishing conditions. I through them downed wood, hitting and deflecting off so many limbs, and allowing the bait to back up when I got it hung. I put it in the rocks, bouncing back off them, and let the bait do its best action. I only managed to get hung up twice, both times in some thick brush I probably shouldn’t have been in with a crankbait, but also knowing it is something bass probably hadn’t seen before there.
I never had to tune the baits during my testing, as they ran true and straight, but I had my needle-nose pliers ready to adjust or tune them by making a slight bend of the eyelet to the right or left just a fraction of an inch. If it runs to the left, bend it ever so slightly to the right and if it runs to the right, bend to the left. Remember to take your time and make small adjustments, even if it means doing it multiple times.
Jaw Jacker Lures is a family owned company, founded in 1990, that builds custom handmade balsa lures for a variety of fisherman all over the world and strive to build the best lure that can be produced, You can find them on Facebook at Jawjacker handmade balsa crankbaits, www.JawJackerLures.com or by calling them at 865-986-9871.
I had never given it much thought, thinking that crankbaits were all the same material wise and that the new plastic versions were the best. But getting reintroduced to balsa reopened my eyes to see that there is a place for both in my tackle box. There is a time and a place for both. Now to get back on the water and get some hawgs! Tight lines and happy fishing!

ALABAMA’S QUAINTANCE WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON PICKWICK LAKE
ALABAMA’S QUAINTANCE WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON PICKWICK LAKE
Belden’s Gable Claims Co-Angler Title
[print_link]
IUKA, Miss. (May 20, 2019) – Boater Chris Quaintance of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mississippi Division tournament on Pickwick Lake Saturday with five bass weighing 21 pounds, 5 ounces. Quaintance netted $4,119 for his victory.
Quaintance said he put between 10 and 15 keepers in the boat during the event and weighed all largemouth.
“I started out the day mid-lake, rotating between a long point that had a little brush at the end of it in 6 to 8 feet of water, and 2 or 3 patches of weed beds 200 yards toward the shoreline,” said Quaintance, who notched his second win as a boater in BFL competition on Pickwick Lake. “I got two good keepers off the point and two from the weed beds. My fourth fish ended up being my heaviest – about 6½ pounds.”
Quaintance used a few different baits to catch his fish – a ¼-ounce, pearl-colored Strike King Swim Jig with a pearl craw trailer, and a 3/8-ounce, green-pumpkin Mean Mouth Pro Rocker Jig with a 3.75-inch Yamamoto Custom Baits Flappin’ Hawg of the same color. He said the 6½-pounder came off a 7-inch, green-pumpkin NetBait T-Mac Straight Tail worm.
“I had a limit by about 8:30 (a.m.) and decided to make a run upstream to an area where I thought I could get a big fish, but someone was on it,” continued Quaintance. “I ended up going to a secondary deal around Koger Island that I hadn’t planned on fishing, but had caught some good ones at before. I caught a 4½-pounder on the Mean Mouth jig, which culled out my smallest fish and really sealed the deal.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st: Chris Quaintance, Muscle Shoals, Ala., five bass, 21-5, $4,119
2nd: Christopher Whitehead, Tupelo, Miss., five bass, 19-15, $2,259
3rd: Jimmy Washam, Covington, Tenn., five bass, 19-14, $1,474
4th: Heath Gilmore, Meridian, Miss., five bass, 19-4, $1,211
5th: Steve Hughes, Mooreville, Miss., five bass, 18-3, $824
6th: Bryan Dowdy, Florence, Ala., five bass, 18-0, $755
7th: Brian White, Pontotoc, Miss., five bass, 16-14, $686
8th: Bryan Waldon, Falkner, Miss., five bass, 16-11, $618
9th: Andrew Clayton, Westpoint, Tenn., five bass, 16-7, $549
10th: Brandon Perkins, Counce, Tenn., five bass, 15-15, $456
10th: Charles Crouch, Waterloo, Ala., four bass, 15-15, $1,021
Complete results can be found at FLWFishing.com.
Crouch caught a bass weighing 7 pounds, 13 ounces – the heaviest of the event in the Boater Division – and earned the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $565.
Connor Gable of Belden, Mississippi, won the Co-angler Division and $2,059 Saturday after catching five bass weighing 15 pounds, 7 ounces.
The top 10 co-anglers were:
1st: Connor Gable, Belden, Miss., five bass, 15-7, $2,059
2nd: Randy Hill, Athens, Ala., five bass, 15-5, $1,280
3rd: Keith Whipple, Iuka, Miss., five bass, 15-4, $737
4th: Dalton Steele, Cherokee, Ala., four bass, 14-2, $762
5th: Daniel Corkern, Florence, Miss., five bass, 13-13, $412
6th: Matthew Berry, Florence, Ala., five bass, 13-5, $378
7th: Hunter Beal, Beech Bluff, Tenn., five bass, 13-2, $343
8th: Clint Horton, Falkner, Miss., five bass, 12-15, $309
9th: Ron Creasy, Florence, Ala., three bass, 12-13, $275
10th: Anthony Rasberry, New Albany, Miss., five bass, 12-2, $240
Steele caught the heaviest bass in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing in at 8 pounds, 15 ounces. The catch earned him the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $282.
The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 17-19 BFL Regional Championship on Lake Guntersville in Guntersville, Alabama, presented by Mercury. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard.
The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2019 BFL All-American will be held May 30-June 1 at the Potomac River in Marbury, Maryland, and is hosted by the Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism and the Commissioners of Charles County. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.
