Three Of The Deadliest Ways To Fish A Creature Bait – MTB

Three Of The Deadliest Ways To Fish A Creature Bait

[print_link]

They look like something from outer space with all sorts of tentacles and flappers that make all the right moves to entice bass into biting. Creature baits come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes that make you wonder if these lures are a genetic mutation of a plastic worm or crawfish or the hybrid offspring of a tube bait and plastic grub. The versatility of these soft plastic baits allows you to fish the lures a variety of ways. Here are three techniques you can employ to catch bass with creature baits.

1) Creature Baits On The T-Rig

Creature Baits

Texas rigging a creature bait lets you flip the lure to targets such as docks or thick bushes. Impale the lure on a 4/0 or 5/0 hook and match it with a 1/4- or 3/8-ounce bullet sinker. After flipping the lure to a target, you can let the creature bait do its own thing on the initial fall. The curly appendages, flappers and fins of the creature bait create undulating action and a tantalizing fall that bass in the cover have a hard time resisting. If a bass ignores the lure on the initial fall, hop the creature a couple of times to trigger strikes.

2) Carolina Rigging A Creature Bait

Creature Baits

Dragging a creature on a Carolina rig along the bottom turns the lure into an ideal crawfish imitator. Crawfish constantly crawl across the bottom so steadily drag your rig along the bottom to trigger strikes. The less time the fish gets a chance to see the lure, the more apt it’s going to be to attack the creature. When fishing deeper than 10 feet, drag the Carolina-rigged creature behind a 3/4-ounce egg sinker. Drop down to a 1/2-ounce sinker when dragging the rig less than 10 feet deep.

3) Creature Baits On A Shaky Head

Creature Baits

Although shaky head fishing is usually a finesse tactic you can convert it into a power fishing technique by matching a heavier shaky jighead with a creature bait. You can pitch or cast this combination to bedding bass in open water or to bass hiding in cover. Shaky head creatures are a good alternative on pressured waters where bass have seen plenty of jig-and-craw combos. I stick my creature baits on 1/4- or 3/8-ounce shaky jigheads designed with extra wide gap hooks for a better hook set. You can trigger strikes with this setup on the initial fall or by shaking it on the bottom.

Craig & Tim Haven win CATT Wateree Open May 11,2019 with 19.42 lbs

Next Wateree Open is May 25th! With the water level finally stable we see there is still plenty of  Water Willow or “grass” as most call it growing along the banks again! It’s in patches but there’s plenty of it! Hopefully the lake can not suffer anymore flooding this year and next Spring. If that happens the fishing will start improving. Yesterday the fishing was very good for just about all the teams. 22 of the 23 teams weighed in a limit which averaged 15.23 lbs per team and total weight was 335.22 lbs. The average BF was 4.01 lbs!

The team with the top weight was Tim & Craig Haven! They brought in 5 bass weighing 19.42 lbs and weighed the 1st BF as well. All total the Havens took home $1,299.00!

2nd Place went to Jason Bateman & Steve Phillips with 5 bass weighing 18.68 lbs!

3rd Ronnie & Jason McCoy 18.10 lbs!

Mitch Mitchell and Candler McCollum Win 2019 Alabama Bass Trail Pickwick Lakeby Dan O’Sullivan

Mitch Mitchell and Candler McCollum Win 2019 Alabama Bass Trail Pickwick Lake
by Dan O’Sullivan

May 11, 2019 – Florence, Ala. – Pickwick Lake has been a steady performer whenever the Northern Division of the Alabama Bass Trail make a stop at Florence Alabama’s McFarland Park.  Typically, the winning weight at Pickwick will be somewhere between 20 and 25 pounds, and it will take 14 pounds to get a paycheck.

May 11, 2019 was not a typical Pickwick Lake day. The winning weight was much higher, and it took nearly 17 pounds to get the last paycheck spot.

No strangers to the ABT podium, the team of Mitch Mitchell and Candler McCollum produced a stellar 29.04-pound limit of Pickwick Lake largemouth and walked away with their third career ABT victory and the first place prize of $10,000.

The pair said that they felt this event in particular was their best chance to move back into the winner’s circle.  “We have been waiting for a tournament at Pickwick that lines up with the fish just moving out to their postspawn haunts, and today was that day,” they said.  “We had 40 or 50 small schools of quality fish marked, and hit 20 of them to get out limit; it feels really good to be holding another one of these trophies.”

They reported making the long run to in sight of the Pickwick Dam and fishing offshore current breaks with moving lures.  “We caught all of our fish on 6-inch Zoom swimbaits on a jighead and Strike King 10XD crankbaits,” they said.  “We only caught about 20 fish, but they were all the right caliber of fish; it was a great day.”

Nolen Spencer and Jonathon Reese finished the day in second place with a limit weighing 26.73 pounds.  The former ABT Northern Division winners said that they too made a long run and fished for postspawn fish.  “We ran to just past the State Line and caught fish off of three spots within three miles of each other,” they said.  “We caught our fish on a variety of lures, but our main ones were 3/4-ounce Mean Mouth Lures Football Jigs and Big Hammer Swimbaits on jigheads.  We did all we could, and got beat by a huge bag; we feel good about our day, and possibly took over the lead in the points race, so we’re happy.” The pair earned $5,000 for their performance.

The third place tea of Jake and Michael Gipson produced a limit of 23.44 pounds to finish third and take home to $4,000 payday.  Their limit was anchored by a remarkable 10.33-pound Pickwick Lake largemouth that took home the Mountain Dew Big Bass $500 bonus for being the largest bass of the event.

The Northern Division of the Alabama Bass Trail hits the water next at the Neely Henry Lake on June 8.

LAMPE’S OLLIVERSON WINS COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT ON TABLE ROCK LAKE PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

LAMPE’S OLLIVERSON WINS COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT ON TABLE ROCK LAKE PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

Missouri pro Earns First Career Victory and earns $38,450

[print_link]

BRANSON, Mo. (May 11, 2019) – ProEric Olliverson of Lampe, Missouri , caught a five-bass limit Saturday weighing 16 pounds, 8 ounces, to win the three-dayCosta FLW Series on Table Rock Lake presented by Power-Pole. Olliverson’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 46 pounds, 3 ounces, was enough to earn him the victory by a 5-ounce margin over second-place pro Dakota Ebare of Denham Springs, Louisiana, and earn him $38,450.

Olliverson said that he fished two main patterns throughout the week, targeting smallmouth in the morning before flipping for largemouth in bushes in the afternoon.

“Every morning I’d start out fishing for smallmouth and would spend 2 to 5 hours doing that,” said Olliverson, who earned his first career victory in FLW competition. “Then I’d go flipping in the bushes for largemouth. I’d have done that the whole time, but I just couldn’t get a largemouth bite going early.”

Targeting offshore areas off points on the lower end of the lake, Olliverson caught a limit of smallmouths on Thursday throwing a Keitech Swing Impact FAT 3.3 swimbait on a 6th Sense Divine Swimbait Jighead and a 6th Sense Dogma 115 topwater bait, on which he replaced the back hook with a feathered VMC treble.

From there, he went flipping a beaver-style bait to shallow brush from Kimberling City to the mouth of the rivers, catching a pair of culling largemouths.

Friday was more of the same, but Olliverson noticed his morning smallmouth bite really never got going until after 8 a.m. Saturday, Olliverson only spent an hour on his smallmouths, catching one keeper before heading shallow to flip. Yet, he never got out his flipping rod.

“Before I flipped, I picked up the Dogma topwater and was throwing it around the bushes and a 3-pounder ate it,” Olliverson said. “From there I just kept the topwater in my hand and covered a ton of water.

“I think the key for me this week was trusting my instinct and trusting the Good Lord,” Olliverson went on to say. “It’s weird, but I felt like I was led this entire week. I’d be running down the lake and it was like there was a voice telling me to ‘turn around, that looked good.’ I’ve got a lot of experience here and I was fishing random places that I’d never fished before. And I was catching big ones. It was truly an amazing week.”

Running out of Whittenburg Wildlife Access in Hickory, NC Chris caught five bass weighing 16.55 pounds. For the Boater Division victory, Baumgardner took home a check for $1800 for his win.

In second for the boaters, Michael Stephens of Gastonia, NC landed a five-bass tournament limit going 16.00 pounds.

“I caught my fish today on a floating worm. I was targeting post spawn fish that were guarding frye. The better bite was early for me but I caught fish all day.” Stephens said.

Dan Funderburk of Rockwell, NC took third for the boaters with five bass going 15.32 pounds including a big bass that weighed 5.41-pounds.

“I started out with a swim jig and switched over to a floating worm and caught a few later in the day on a flipping jig. My big bass came on a 1/2oz Davis jig around a dock.” Funderburk said.

Finishing fourth, Jeffrey Queen of Catawba, NC landed a five-bass limit for 15.27 pounds. Brian Travis of Conover, NC rounded out the top five boaters with five bass at 14.88pounds.

“I also caught my fish on a Senko around docks.” Moore said. “

Final Round Surge Lifts Thomas Nokes To Narrow Win In B.A.S.S. Nation Regional

Final Round Surge Lifts Thomas Nokes To Narrow Win In B.A.S.S. Nation Regional

[print_link]

REDDING, Calif. — Following two consistent performances on the first two days of the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Western Regional on Shasta Lake, Thomas Nokes saved the best for last and mounted a final-round rally that propelled him to a three-day winning weight of 33 pounds, 15 ounces.

For his victory, Nokes earned $5,000 and a spot in the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship, to be held Nov. 6-8 on Lake Hartwell, South Carolina.

The Riverton, Utah, boater placed 14th on Day 1 with a five-bass limit catch of 10-12 and then advanced to 10th on Day 2 by adding a limit that went 10-1. Today, Nokes added 13-2 — the biggest catch of the day  — to surge up the standings and overtake Day 2 leader Taylor Smith by a 5-ounce margin.

Nokes was the top boater for the Utah B.A.S.S. Nation state team, which finished third in the event’s team competition. Most of his fish came on what he described as an old-school tactic, but today it offered a tremendous opportunity that he leveraged to the fullest.

“I started out this morning doing the same thing I’d been doing all week — using a 1/4-ounce dart head with a Berkley Power Worm,” he said. “I got a random big fish — a 4-pounder — off a point that I had worn out for the last three days. It just happened to be there today.”

Nokes said he and his nonboater got their limits fairly quickly by fishing main-lake points. Unsatisfied with his weight, he knew he needed to make something big happen, so he relocated to Shasta Lake’s Pitt Arm and immediately got to work.

“We rolled in and made a few casts, and they were there,” Nokes said. “We landed on a big topwater bite and the fish were busting shad in the backs of little tiny cuts. We spent about three hours whooping and hollering and catching fish.

“It was a mess; we had tied-up stuff all over the boat, broken lines and baits, but it was fun. We took a long time culling things out and we’d regroup until the fish would come back up somewhere else and we’d go over there and get them.”

Nokes caught his schooling fish on a bone-colored Zara Super Spook. The fish seemed to respond best to a speedy retrieve.

Once he felt comfortable with his day’s productivity, Nokes returned to Bridge Bay Marina early. With a potentially winning limit in his livewell, he was taking no chances.

“We came back down here around 1 o’clock (an hour before weigh-in) and sat at the dock for an hour to make sure we made it in time,” Nokes said.

Smith, who hails from Spokane Valley, Wash., caught a limit that weighed 10-8 and finished with a second-place tournament total of 33-10. He began the final round by focusing on spotted bass early with a River2Sea Whopper Plopper, a Reaction Innovations Vixen and a Lucky Craft Sammy. This pattern yielded one keeper before Smith transitioned to his largemouth pattern.

“After my nonboater got his limit, I ran my largemouth stuff and flipped all day,” Smith said. “I was flipping a Texas-rigged Senko.”

Smith was the top boater for the Idaho B.A.S.S. Nation state team.

Nate Caldwell of Fort Collins, Colo., finished third with 32-3. Topping the Colorado B.A.S.S. Nation state team, Caldwell rose from 26th on Day 1 to eighth on Day 2 before rising to third on the strength of his final-round limit that weighed 11-1.

“I was throwing 3.3 Keitech swimbaits on a 1/4-ounce white head for spawning spotted bass that I couldn’t see,” Caldwell said. “Occasionally, I’d follow up with Ned rigs and drop shots. I caught some nice largemouth in practice, but I abandoned the pattern of running pockets because everyone was doing it. I just played the numbers game and tried to cull up. I caught 75 to 100 fish a day.”

Trevor Scott of Windsor, Co. won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award with his 7-4.

Jonathan “J.B.” Bryson of Las Vegas, Nev., completed the wire-to-wire victory in the nonboater division with daily weights of 8-3, 7-11 and 5-13 for a tournament total of 21-11. His was a simple strategy of drop shotting a Keitech Easy Shiner to secure a couple of keepers and then switching to a larger drop shot with a 7-inch Zoom Trick Worm.

“My boaters put me on fish, so I just tried to whack as many as I could,” he said. “I wasn’t going for the big giant fish; I was just going for numbers.”

The tactics did produce one big bass, however. Bryson won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award for the nonboater division with his 4-1.
