CLEAR LAKE SET FOR WEEKEND OF FISHING LEAGUE WORLDWIDE BASS-FISHING TOURNAMENTS
Three Events – Costa FLW Series, YETI FLW College Fishing and Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Open – To Take Place at Konocti Vista Casino Resort & Marina in Lakeport
[print_link]
LAKEPORT, Calif. (May 7, 2019) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) is set to visit Clear Lake next week, May 16-19, for three bass-fishing tournaments that will award anglers of all ages and skill levels thousands of dollars in cash and prizes.
The Costa Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Series Western division will kick things off, May 16-18, with the Costa FLW Series at Clear Lake. The three-day tournament will feature up to 200 of the best West Coast bass-fishing professionals and co-anglers casting for a top prize of $85,000, including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard in the pro division.
Saturday, May 18, college anglers kick off competition at the YETI FLW College Fishing event at Clear Lake presented by Costa. The one-day tournament will showcase college bass-fishing clubs from the Western Conference competing for cash and prizes and angling for their chance to advance to the FLW College Fishing National Championship.
Competition will wrap up Sunday, May 19, with the Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Open at Clear Lake. The one-day High School Fishing Open tournament is a free, two-person (team) events for students in grades 7-12 and open to any FLW and Student Angler Federation-affiliated high school club in the country. The top 10 percent of finishers at the High School Open will advance to the 2019 High School Fishing National Championship on Pickwick Lake in Alabama this June.
According to FLW Tour pro Billy Hines of Vacaville, California, fans can expect to see a lot of monster Clear Lake bass as the tournaments are lining up directly with the spawn.
“I think it’s mainly going to be a weekend of bed-fishing tournaments with a lot of big fish being caught,” said Hines, who has one career top-10 finish on Clear Lake in FLW competition. “I absolutely think we’ll see some big limits brought to the scales – in the 26- to 30-pound range. I think the majority of the field will be flipping, punching and throwing frogs.
“The lake really fishes like almost two different lakes,” Hines continued. “Guys are going to be able to find some postspawn fish on the north side, and the bigger spawning fish will be found mid-lake to down south. The lake is fishing really good right now – I think the three-day Costa winner will need 70 to 75 pounds, but it has the potential to be a 80- to 90-pound tournament.”
Anglers will take off from Konocti Vista Casino Resort & Marina, located at 2755 Mission Rancheria Road in Lakeport, at 6:30 a.m. PT each day. Weigh-ins will also take place at the Resort, starting at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. All takeoffs and weigh-ins are free to attend and open to the public, and will be streamed live online at FLWFishing.com.

LAKE HARTWELL TO HOST 2020 BFL ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
37th Annual Grassroots Bass Fishing Championship to be held at Green Pond Landing in Anderson County
ANDERSON, S.C. (May 6, 2019) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) announced Monday that the 37th annual T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) All-American will be held on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell in 2020. The tournament, slated for April 30-May 2, showcases the nation’s best weekend anglers and awards the winner a $120,000 cash award and an automatic berth into the FLW Cup, but the Anderson community is the real winner, as the area will benefit from the tournament’s estimated $1 million economic impact.
Although the fishery has never hosted an All-American Championship, Lake Hartwell has played host to numerous major FLW bass-fishing tournaments over the years – including four FLW Tour events, two YETI FLW College Fishing tournaments and 44 BFL qualifying events – and proved to be an able playing ground for competitors as anglers hauled in high numbers of solid limits.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be bringing the 2020 BFL All-American to Lake Hartwell,” said Kathy Fennel, FLW President of Operations. “We’ve had great success hosting tournaments in Anderson in the past and the attendance at our previous events has made bringing our All-American championship there an obvious choice. The bass fishing fans in South Carolina have always been extremely passionate and enthusiastic, and we’re proud to be bringing our championship event to them.”
Anglers and their families as well as staff, sponsors and spectators, will descend upon the Anderson area before, during and after the event. These visitors will stay in local hotels, eating in local restaurants and shopping at local stores. Anderson will also benefit from national publicity, as the All-American will be covered in media outlets across the country as well as in FLW Bass Fishing Magazine and FLWFishing.com. Coverage of the 2020 All-American will also be broadcast to more than 63 million cable, satellite and telecommunications households in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean on the World Fishing Network (WFN). FLW television is also distributed internationally to FLW partner countries, including Canada, China, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Portugal, Spain and South Africa.
“We are very excited to be able to host the great folks from FLW at Green Pond Landing, Lake Hartwell and Anderson County for the 2020 BFL All American,” said Neil Paul, executive director for Visit Anderson. “FLW has been an integral part of the growth and development of Green Pond and we are excited to have them back. FLW and the participating anglers will be welcomed by a nationally ranked facility and fishery, a community that is very supportive of fishing and a team at Anderson County and Visit Anderson that is dedicated to providing the best tournament experience in the country. This announcement is a huge win for our county.”
The T-H Marine Bass Fishing League features a boater/co-angler format, and anglers compete in four one-day events and one two-day super-tournament to qualify for a regional championship. Six regional championships, along with the BFL Wild Card tournament, each send six boaters and six co-anglers to the All-American. The top boater and co-angler from each of the seven divisions at the 2020 TBF National Championship, along with both members of the second, third and fourth-place teams at the 2020 YETI FLW College Fishing National Championship also qualify, for a total playing field of 55 boaters and 55 co-anglers.
Because BFL competitors are weekend anglers and not pros, the All-American and its lucrative cash awards present a unique opportunity for qualifiers. In addition to the $120,000 top boater award, the winning co-angler will earn $60,000 cash. In addition to the six-figure payday, the top boater will also receive an invitation to compete for bass fishing’s most coveted prize – the FLW Cup.
As the nation’s leading provider of affordable, close-to-home weekend tournaments, the BFL is widely credited with opening competitive bass fishing to the masses. It also serves as a steppingstone for anglers who wish to advance to the Costa FLW Series and ultimately the FLW Tour – bass fishing’s largest tournament series. Each year the top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each BFL division are eligible for priority entry in to the FLW Series, and All-American champions qualifies to compete on the FLW Tour. The top five pros from each U.S. division of the FLW Series, along with the International division representative at the FLW Cup are eligible to advance to the FLW Tour. Former BFL All-American champions who currently compete on the FLW Tour include Nick LeBrun (2018), Jeremy Lawyer (2016), Curtis Richardson (2015), Kerry Milner (2013) and Troy Morrow (2010).
The complete schedule and rules for the 2020 BFL season will be announced this fall. The full schedule and rules will be posted online at FLWFishing.com.

JOPLIN’S MATHERLY WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON STOCKTON LAKE
Cuba’s Fey Takes Co-Angler Division
[print_link]
GREENFIELD, Mo. (May 6, 2019) – Boater Marty Matherly of Joplin, Missouri, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Ozark Division tournament on Stockton Lake Saturday with five bass weighing 14 pounds, 3 ounces. Matherly pocketed $5,279 for his day on the water.
“The night before the tournament, my buddy told me to fish the moment, so I did,” said Matherly, who earned his first win FLW competition. “I told my co-angler I was going to throw a topwater because of the cloud cover and how calm it was, but in Son’s Creek my co-angler immediately caught a 3-pounder flipping. I decided to go with what they were biting. I started flipping bushes and immediately caught fish. They were on the outside edge of the bushes.
“By 9 [a.m.], I think I had three largemouth,” continued Matherly. “I had a feeling that fish were both coming from the spawn and going to spawn, so I moved out 20 yards past the main-lake point outside Son’s Creek, and that’s where I caught a 5-pounder in some bushes.”
Matherly said he used a Texas-rigged, Sooner Run-colored Gene Larew Hoodaddy with a 3/8th-ounce WOO! tungsten weight to catch his initial fish. After hooking one and losing it nearby, he said he went two hours without a bite. After some more time spent in Son’s Creek, he headed back toward the dam to finish out his limit.
“My fifth fish came from 20 feet of clear water at the dam, on a flat with rocks,” said Matherly. “I caught a few small ones at other spots before going to a main-lake point, also by the dam. With about 30 minutes left to fish, I caught a 3-pound largemouth. It was my winning fish.”
Matherly’s final two fish were caught on a ¾-ounce PBJ-colored Omega football-head jig with a green-pumpkin Strike King Rage Tail Space Monkey.

GEORGETOWN’S MORRISON WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON LAKE CUMBERLAND
Co-Angler Title Goes to Salyersville’s Rudd
[print_link]
SOMERSET, Ky. (May 6, 2019) – Boater Michael Morrison of Georgetown, Kentucky, brought five bass to the scale Saturday weighing 17 pounds, 3 ounces, to take top honors at the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mountain Division tournament on Lake Cumberland. For his efforts, Morrison netted $4,917.
Morrison said he spent his day fishing approximately 15 different pockets mid-lake down toward the Wolf Creek Dam, about an hour from takeoff.
“The largemouth and smallmouth were still spawning,” said Morrison, who notched his first win in FLW competition. “I used a glide bait as a locator bait. Only some of them would get it, so I added a stinger hook on an inch and a half of braided line. It’s just an extra treble hook that hangs down farther in the water column to help get the fish that missed the lure’s original two hooks.
“I did the modification in practice on Friday and it helped my hookup ratio,” continued Morrison. “On Friday, out of 25 bites, I only caught 10 fish. They were only guarding the nest, they weren’t eating. But on Saturday, I was able to catch 12 keepers from 15 or 20 bites – nine smallmouth and three largemouth.”
Morrison said he opted for a 6¼-inch, Threadfin Shad-colored XPS Bass Pro Shops Boss Glide Swimbait.
“I also added a feather on the back hook to get them to target the hooks more rather than the bait,” said Morrison. “For fish that missed it, I followed up with a [Texas-rigged, Get the Net-colored Cabin Creek Bait Company] Express Bug.”
Morrison said he ended up weighing four smallmouth and one largemouth – three from the glide bait and two from the Express Bug.
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st: Michael Morrison, Georgetown, Ky., five bass, 17-3, $4,917
2nd: Ryan Davidson, Branchland, W. Va., five bass, 15-14, $2,158
3rd: Nick Ratliff, Vine Grove, Ky., five bass, 15-12, $1,407
4th: Matt Stanley, Alexandria, Tenn., five bass, 14-14, $1,164
5th: Adam Wagner, Cookeville, Tenn., five bass, 14-11, $783
6th: Thomas Coomer, Florence, Ky., five bass, 14-7, $718
7th: Ryan Coleman, Utica, Ky., five bass, 14-3, $653
8th: Colton Chambers, Elizabethton, Tenn., five bass, 14-1, $588

7th: Taylor Wisniewski, Lexington, Ky., five bass, 9-13, $306
8th: Dakota Bell, Monticello, Ky., five bass, 9-11, $275
9th: Jamie Karnes, Cave City, Ky., five bass, 8-13, $217
9th: James McPherson, Lexington, Ky., five bass, 8-13, $217
9th: Lucas Devere, Berea, Ky., five bass, 8-13, $217
Jonathan Sydnor of Canmer, Kentucky, caught the heaviest bass in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing in at 4 pounds, 11 ounces. The catch earned him the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $235.
The tournament was hosted by the Somerset Tourist & Convention Commission.
The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 17-19 BFL Regional Championship on Lake Guntersville in Guntersville, Alabama, presented by Mercury. Lately in the bass fishing industry a lot of focus has been put on the brand new Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour and its new format. A lot of you are probably familiar with the new format, but for those who aren’t here’s a quick overview: every bass over 1 pound counts, no 5 fish limit, new conservation-minded penalties are being enforced, and no entry fees. While all of this is well and good, this style of fishing is taking a good bit of focus away from big bass. Most of us bass fisherman grew up on big bass. Whether it be the 5-fish tournaments we are all used to, or just friendly competition between buddies. We all love big fish and who can catch the biggest. This being said, I am not trying to slam MLF, but it is a big change to what we are used to and what we love seeing. MLF has its place and is making big strides at getting a new audience to bass fishing with more live fish catches and giving the viewer more to watch and I commend them for that.
For big bass lovers and newcomers alike, though, I have a tournament trail to share with you that not only has great payouts, but an awesome way to get into tournament bass fishing. The Bass Pro Shops Cabela’s Big Bass Tour is a tournament trail that is cut and dry, set up to make you money. This 3 day tournament works by holding 7 hourly weigh-ins with hourly payouts starting at $1,000 for first prize paying all the way down ten places to $100. It’s simple; catch the single biggest fish you can and weigh it in for your chance to cut a check. The Big Bass Tour also provides a link to a live leaderboard every hour to see how big the fish are that everyone is weighing in so you can know whether to weigh your fish in then, or take a chance and wait it out and hope they don’t catch ‘em as good the next hour.
This format is great for newcomers because all you have to do is catch one good one. You do not have to stress yourself to fill out a 5-fish limit. You could get lucky and catch one by a complete freak chance and still make $1,000, or even better, this year for grand prize they are giving away a brand new Nitro z19 with a Mercury Pro XS 200 valued at $45,000. This format for more experienced bass fisherman is fun too because you can just hunt for one biggin’ all day long each day. Go around and sling your favorite big fish bait until you run into one. It gives such a cool twist to tournament bass fishing and showcases some of the biggest fish your lake has to offer.
This year I got to fish the Smith Mountain Lake stop and had an absolute blast. This tournament allows up to three people per boat so you can just go out and have a good time with your friends and family like I did. At this tournament we had 930 people fish the tournament from 21 different states, but don’t let that number intimidate you. Over $133,000 was given away on top of the $45,000 boat. I ended up cutting a 2nd place finish in the first hour of the tournament, being blessed with a $500 check. If I can do it, so can you! Check out www.Bigbasstour.com for their tournament schedule and give one a shot!
