EUFAULA, Okla. (April 29, 2019) – Boater Brett King of Kinta, Oklahoma, caught five bass Saturday weighing 21 pounds, 2 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Okie Division tournament on Eufaula Lake. King netted $4,127 for his efforts.

King said he slow-rolled spinnerbaits to earn his win. He said he used a ½-ounce black and chartreuse-colored Booyah Single Colorado Blade spinnerbait with a pearl-colored YUM Pulse swimbait before switching to a ½-ounce white, blue and chartreuse Booyah Double Colorado in the afternoon with the same trailer.

“I was throwing on small channel swing banks,” said King, who earned his first career victory in FLW competition. “I had two stretches about 50 yards long around the Oak Ridge Cove area that had channel swings and little sandy points with laydown logs. The fish were pulling out of spawning pockets and heading back out to the main lake.

“Both stretches were equally productive,” King continued. “I didn’t start catching them until about 10:30 [a.m.] and I caught my last keeper at 1:30 [p.m.].

In total, King said he caught eight keepers throughout his day.

WEST FRANKFORT’S SHORAGA WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE OPENER ON REND LAKE PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

WEST FRANKFORT’S SHORAGA WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE OPENER ON REND LAKE PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

Edwardsville’s Greco Grabs Co-Angler Title

WHITTINGTON, Ill. (April 29, 2019) – Boater Dan Shoraga of West Frankfort, Illinois, brought five bass to the weigh-in stage Saturday totaling 12 pounds, 5 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Illini Division opener on Rend Lake presented by Navionics. For his victory, Shoraga pocketed $6,185.

“I decided to stay on the south end of the lake and had one primary spot that I stayed in pretty much all day – the Sandusky area,” said Shoraga, who earned his third win in BFL competition. “I’d found the fish a week before. The water came up about 10 inches so they’d pulled a little bit, but I was able to still get about eight bites, including five keepers.”

Shoraga said he flipped shallow willow trees, with the fish coming from about 2 feet of water. He caught four he weighed on a Texas-rigged black and blue- or black neon-colored Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver with a 3/8-ounce weight, and one on a 3/8-ounce homemade white and chartreuse spinnerbait. He said he preferred the black neon Sweet Beaver for dirtier water.

“My Power-Poles were a big part of my day,” said Shoraga. “I knew some of the fish were on beds even though you couldn’t see them, and sometimes times it’d take three or four bites before I’d hook them. I had to sit there with the poles down knowing that they’d bite after a few tries.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Dan Shoraga, West Frankfort, Ill., five bass, 12-5, $4,185 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

2nd:         Brad Porter, Bluford, Ill., four bass, 10-8, $1,593

3rd:          Jake Hurst, New Athens, Ill., three bass, 9-10, $994

4th:          Derek Jenkel, Pinckneyville, Ill., four bass, 9-5, $947

5th:          Chad Diedrich, Nashville, Ill., five bass, 9-2, $597

6th:          Jeremy Mull, Pawnee, Ill., four bass, 8-11, $547

7th:          William Walker, Mulkeytown, Ill., three bass, 8-7, $798

8th:          Tim Davis, East Alton, Ill., three bass, 7-10, $448

9th:          Luke Budde, St. Louis, Mo., three bass, 7-5, $548

10th:        Greg Mullins, Mount Vernon, Ill., three bass, 7-0, $348

Complete results can be found at FLWFishing.com.

Cliff Pass of Lenzburg, Illinois, caught a 5-pound, 12-ounce bass – the heaviest of the event in the Boater Division – and earned the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $350.

Jacob Greco of Edwardsville, Illinois, won the Co-angler Division and $1,493 Saturday after catching four bass weighing 9 pounds, 1 ounce.

The top 10 co-anglers were:

1st:          Jacob Greco, Edwardsville, Ill., four bass, 9-1, $1,493

2nd:         Jason Piper, Collinsville, Ill., three bass, 7-8, $746

3rd:          Kim Sapetti, Chatham, Ill., three bass, 6-12, $597

4th:          Mario Rossi Jr., Granite City, Ill., two bass, 5-12, $398

5th:          Sheldon Ayers, Goreville, Ill., one bass, 5-6, $474

6th:          David Duzan, Oakland, Ill., one bass, 4-10, $274

7th:          Drew Coleman, Jackson, Mo., two bass, 4-9, $249

8th:          Brandon Depew, Odin, Ill., two bass, 4-8, $224

9th:          Mike Swetland, Tamaroa, Ill., two bass, 4-4, $199

10th:        Aaron Wetzel, Chester, Ill., two bass, 4-0, $174

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 24-26 BFL Regional Championship on Grand Lake in Grove, Oklahoma. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard.

Power-Pole Partners With the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation to Cure Cancer One Cast at a Time

Catch fish, win a Power-Pole, defeat childhood cancer — it’s a win all around

[print_link]

TAMPA, Fla., April 29, 2019  – Power-Pole Shallow Water Anchors is proud to announce its partnership with the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation (NPCF) for the 2019 NPCF All-American Fishing Tournament, a nationwide tournament that aims to raise awareness and funding for childhood cancer research.

Open to both freshwater and saltwater anglers across the country, the app-based competition kicked off on April 6, 2019, and runs through September 28, 2019. Along with $10,000 in total prize money, all entrants will be eligible to win a Power-Pole 8-foot Pro II Shallow Water Anchor.

“Power-Pole has a long and wonderful tradition of community support, and we are excited to announce their recent partnership with the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation in an effort to expand the ‘Fishing Funds the Cure’ initiative,” NPCF CEO David Frazer said. “This project helps to fund research to find less-toxic, more targeted treatments, therapies and cures for pediatric cancer.”

The catch, photograph and release tournament will utilize the iAngler Tournament app for Apple or Android. The winning fish will be determined based on the total length (in inches) of the largest, eligible species caught. Winners will be announced live on Facebook on Saturday, September 28, at 6 p.m. ET.

Anglers may register at FishingFundsTheCure.org at any time during the tournament. The registration fee is $25 per angler and includes an entry to win the Power-Pole anchor, the winner of which will be chosen at random. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top three catches of the following species: largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill/bream, rainbow trout and cutthroat for freshwater anglers; and redfish, snook, spotted seatrout, flounder and striped bass for saltwater anglers. Anglers may fish from the shore, docks, seawalls, boats and bridges in any natural body of water.

“Power-Pole is committed to helping kids beat this battle,” said Jean Treimanis, CFO of JL Marine Systems Inc. “We can now all fish with a purpose as we support a worthy cause.”

Founded in 1991, the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation is dedicated to funding clinical trials by collaborating with a network of cutting-edge hospitals across the nation to eliminate childhood cancer and fast-track less toxic, more targeted treatments and therapies. Cancer is the leading cause of death among children, and 43 cases are diagnosed every day. More than 95% of those who survive childhood cancer will have a significant health-related issue by the time they are 45 as a result of being treated with drugs designed for adults.

In a recent episode of Down Time presented by Power-Pole, the Power-Pole media team, including Bryan and Greg Watts, ventured out into Tampa Bay to look for big bull reds and give some pointers to help competitors climb the fishing tournament’s leaderboard while defeating childhood cancer.

PBC ACADEMY SPORTS & OUTDOORS SPRING TEAM BASS TRAIL QUALIFIER #5

[print_link]

Saturday April 27th, 2019 ~  ~ Kerr Lake ~ ~ Flemingtown Landing Wildlife Ramp

Kerr Lake! Oh Well. Fishing was great during the week then a cold front moved in yet most all had a limit but the larger fish are just hard to find!! Air temps ranged from 47 to 70, lake level 303 and the winds blew from 5 to 13 pretty much all day with surface temps averaging 68 degrees. Our best turnout of the year, 96 boats, competed in the PBC Academy

Sports & Outdoors $10K Spring Team Bass Trail Qualifier #5!
Timmy Ferrell (L) & Howard Lee Bohannon managed to catch 5 bass weighing a total of 17.21 lbs. to take 1st Place and 1st Place TWT winning a total of $3,595 in prize money! Ferrell (L)..Bohannon (R)

The 2nd Place team of Dennis Reedy and Tommy Marrow (subbing for Scott Smith) took home $1,730 prize money by catching 5 bass weighing 16.66 lbs. and winning the 2nd Place TWT. Scott Mooneyham & Buster Seabolt took 3rd with 5 bass weighing 16.54 lbs. winning $703. The 1st Place Big Fish (6.36 lbs.) was caught by the team of Richard Cooper & Drew Johnson and along with splitting prize money with a tie for 4th, took home $1,901!!! Some good money was paid out today!!!

383 bass were brought to the scales and many of those weighed in the 4 lb. range typical now for Kerr. Worms, topwater, chatterbaits along with jigs & spinnerbaits in the more shallow 4 to 6′ of water seemed to be the lures of choice. You noticed I said ‘Topwater’!! Lots of fish caught but size still isn’t what it was years ago.

I want to thank Academy Sports & Outdoors along with all our other sponsors and all the anglers that participated. Our next tournament will be the 2019 PBC Hart’s Custom Sets/Cashion Fishing Rods $5K Spring

LEXINGTON’S WALSER WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON KERR LAKE

LEXINGTON’S WALSER WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON KERR LAKE

Co-Angler Title Goes to Shelby’s Scism

HENDERSON, N.C. (April 29, 2019) – Boater Robert Walser of Lexington, North Carolina, brought five bass to the weigh-in stage totaling 15 pounds, 10 ounces, to win Saturday’s T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) North Carolina Division tournament on Kerr Lake. For his efforts, Walser took home $5,718.

“I fished flooded bushes and trees, mid-lake, along an approximately 20-mile stretch,” said Walser, who logged his 12th career win in BFL competition – tied for second most all-time. “I used a spinnerbait early, and then I flipped.”

Walser said he used a ½-ounce white-colored Rush Lures double-willow-bladed spinnerbait with a chartreuse and silver glitter Zoom Split Tail trailer on 20-pound-test Berkley Big Game line. He flipped a green-pumpkin Zoom Baby Brush Hog with a 3/0-sized Berkley Fusion 19 EWG hook and a 3/8-ounce Eco Pro tungsten flipping weight. For flipping, he opted for 20-pound-test Berkley Trilene 100-percent fluorocarbon line.

“I caught more than 30 keepers. It was hard initially, but after it warmed up it got easier,” said Walser. “We had a severe cold front come through Friday afternoon and the temperatures dropped rapidly – maybe 20 degrees in 30 minutes. It rained following the temperature change, so we had a few hours of cold rain. I think it had an effect on the fish I was targeting, but after noontime I caught four or five limits.”

Walser said he ended up weighing one off the spinnerbait, and the rest from the Brush Hog.

“Some of those spinnerbait fish in the morning were at those deeper bushes, and my Garmin Panoptix showed me the submerged bushes I couldn’t see, which really helped me out,” said Walser.

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Robert Walser, Lexington, N.C., five bass, 15-10, $3,718 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

LAKE FORK, Texas — After record-setting attendance numbers at the 2019 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, B.A.S.S. officials announced a yearlong celebration of the fans who make professional bass fishing so special.

Since then, the “Year of the Fan” has been gaining momentum at each Bassmaster Elite Series event with an Outdoors Expo that puts fans center stage and gives them a chance meet and greet their favorite Elite Series pros.

That celebration will hit another gear during the Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, with a live performance by country music star Chris Knight.

The tournament will run Thursday through Monday, and the Outdoors Expo will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Knight, whose most recent album, “Little Victories,” reached No. 25 on the Billboard Country charts, will perform beginning at 4:15 p.m. Saturday. Knight kicks off the Mercury Concert Series, which also provides live music at Bassmaster Elite events Lake Guntersville, Alabama; St. Lawrence River, New York; Cayuga Lake, New York; and Lake St. Clair, Michigan.

“As people saw during the Elite Series events at Lake Hartwell and Winyah Bay in April, the Year of the Fan celebration is aimed at making sure our supporters have the time of their lives at our tournaments,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “Top-notch live entertainment will only add to the experience.”

In addition to performing popular singles like “Cry Lonely” and “In the Meantime,” Knight is an accomplished songwriter who has penned hits like “Love at 90 Miles an Hour” for Ty Herndon and “She Couldn’t Change Me” for Montgomery Gentry.

His 90-minute performance will add more spice to an Elite Series “Fandamonium” celebration that also includes boat demo rides, prize giveaways, autograph sessions, angler seminars, food vendors and more.

As part of the Texas Fest celebration, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) will have a major presence at the Outdoors Expo with aquariums, casting and fly-tying instruction, fish art and multiple children’s activities. TPWD will also be honoring five Toyota ShareLunker Legacy Anglers who caught and donated bass that weighed 13 pounds or more to the organization’s selective breeding program in 2019.

Get Hooked on Fishing presented by Toyota, Shakespeare and TakeMeFishing.org will provide an interactive fishing experience for children with casting lessons, a fishing pond and a chance to meet the pros.

TPWD will also induct Alan Haynes of Tyler, former CEO and president of The Sportster Inc. retail sporting goods chain, into the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in ceremonies Saturday at Texas Fest. A lifelong sportsman, Haynes is being honored for his efforts to engage people in fishing.

Fans who’d like to get a little exercise during the event can participate in the “Run Your Dam Bass Off” 5-mile run at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Registration is open at lakeforkchamber.org for $25.

As for the actual competition, a full field of 75 anglers will compete Thursday and Friday on Lake Fork. The anglers will take a break from fishing on Saturday to participate in the off-the-water festivities, and the Top 35 will advance to the semifinal round on Sunday. Only the Top 10 will advance to Championship Monday with a chance at the $100,000 first-place prize.

Daily takeoffs will be at 7 a.m. CT from Sabine River Authority, which is located at 353 PR 5183 in Quitman, Texas. Weigh-ins will be held at the same location each day at 3 p.m.

Local hosts for the tournament and corresponding events will be the Wood County Industrial Commission, Emory Tourism, Quitman EDC, Sabine River Authority and the Lake Fork Chamber of Commerce.

All events are free, except the 5-mile run.

ELIZABETHTON’S SMITH WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON DOUGLAS LAKE

ELIZABETHTON’S SMITH WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON DOUGLAS LAKE

Johnson Wins Co-Angler Division

[print_link]

KODAK, Tenn. (April 29, 2019) – Boater Kyle Smith of Elizabethton, Tennessee, caught five bass Saturday weighing 17 pounds, 11 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Volunteer Division tournament on Douglas Lake. For his victory, Smith was awarded $4,384.

Smith said he started the tournament fishing around the Interstate 40 Bridge and worked his way to the Dandridge Bridge as the day progressed. He initially threw a wacky-rigged green pumpkin-colored V&M Chopstick on a Dobyns Champion XP704SF rod, targeting spawning fish on flats and in pockets around laydowns.

“I caught the heaviest fish of my day early – a 4-pound, 11-ouncer – so the day started out really well,” said Smith, who earned his first win in FLW competition. “I caught a couple more on the Chopstick then switched over to a spinnerbait around 10 [a.m.] and targeted deeper bushes and points with rock.”

Smith used a ½-ounce chartreuse and white-colored Dobyns D-Blade Beast spinnerbait with a glimmer blue-colored FoolinBass Custom Baits twin-tailed grub trailer on a Dobyns Champion XP733C rod. He noted that his Lowrance electronics were also crucial to his success, helping him stay in the right depth range on the points.

“I probably boated 25 keepers throughout the day,” said Smith. “In the late afternoon I ended up culling two fish in the last hour with the spinnerbait. It was a great day of fishing.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Kyle Smith, Elizabethton, Tenn., five bass, 17-11, $4,384

2nd:         Chris Ferguson, Wittensville, Ky., five bass, 17-8, $1,322

2nd:         Brant Grimm, Church Hill, Tenn., five bass, 17-8, $1,322

4th:          Matt Linton, Kingston, Tenn., five bass, 15-9, $970

4th:          Steven Bean, Knoxville, Tenn., five bass, 15-9, $635

6th:          Todd Goade, Suwanee, Ga., five bass, 15-2, $988

7th:          Tee Watkins, East Point, Ky., five bass, 15-0, $489

8th:          Nathan Hipps, Canton, N.C., five bass, 14-10, $415

8th:          Bryan Leonard, Blountville, Tenn., five bass, 14-10, $415

10th:        Chip Chambers, Elizabethton, Tenn., five bass, 14-7, $342

Linton caught a 6-pound, 14-ounce bass – the heaviest of the event in the Boater Division – and earned the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $335.

Dustin Johnson of Elizabethton, Tennessee, won the Co-angler Division and $1,467 Saturday after catching five bass weighing 13 pounds, 6 ounces.

The top 10 co-anglers were:

5th:          Joshua Jernigan, Rocky Top, Tenn., five bass, 12-0, $443

6th:          Ryan Bush, Big Stone Gap, Va., five bass, 11-12, $269

7th:          David Blakely, Kingsport, Tenn., five bass, 11-2, $244

8th:          Cody Melton, Greeneville, Tenn., five bass, 11-0, $220

9th:          Larry Brumett Jr., Bristol, Va., five bass, 10-15, $296

10th:        Mike Byrd, McDermott, Ohio, three bass, 10-9, $171

Alex McGee of Knoxville, Tennessee, caught the heaviest bass in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing in at 5 pounds, 13 ounces. The catch earned him the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $167.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 10-12 BFL Regional Championship on Lake Hartwell in Seneca, South Carolina, presented by Navionics. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard.

The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. Chad and Ryan Hall Win 2019 Alabama Bass Trail Weiss Lakeby Dan O’Sullivan

Chad and Ryan Hall Win 2019 Alabama Bass Trail Weiss Lake
by Dan O’Sullivan

[print_link]

April 27, 2019 – Centre, Ala. – Weiss Lake has become one of the more interesting events on the Alabama Bass Trail’s Northern Division schedule since it made its first appearance on it.  While the lake is known as the Crappie Capital of the World, Weiss features tremendous opportunities for both largemouth and Coosa River spotted bass.

As a result, one never quite knows what it will take to win here, there is always a chance of a bag loaded with each, or a mixed bag, and the weights can be impressive.  Then – as with any other fishery – the lake can surprise you with a change from day-to-day.  That was the result of the third stop on the ABT Northern Division schedule, when the weights fell slightly lower than expected.

The team of Chad and Ryan Hall brought an impressive 19.75-pound limit to the scales at Leesburg Landing, and never expected it to be the winning weight; but, it was.  The pair walked away with the $10,000 winner’s share of the purse and an automatic bid into the 2019 ABT Championship on Lake Guntersville.

To say they were surprised by the outcome was an understatement.  “We never expected that this weight would hold up to win,” they said.  “We figured that it would be worth a top 10 possibly, but this is the best trail with the best anglers in the state, and it means so much to be here.”

They said they caught big numbers of fish in the midlake area, but didn’t expect to have the weights they did.  “Practice was miserable, and we caught a bunch of fish, but didn’t find the weight to be good; today was much better for size,” they reported.  “We fished grass and docks shallow and caught somewhere around 40 fish on white swim jigs and flipping green pumpkin Sweet Beavers – it was a good day.”

Damien Willis and Tyler Kiker; winners of the Wheeler Lake event earlier this season, posted 18.64 pounds to finish the day in second place, earning the $5,000 runners up prize.  They said spent their morning running around looking for spawning fish, before stumbling onto a postspawn spinnerbait pattern that proved to be the ticket.  “We should have recognized it earlier, but we caught our big fish on a chartreuse and white spinnerbait at around eleven o’clock, and the light went on,” they said.  “We certainly wish we would have discovered it before, but this will give us good points in the standings, so we’re pleased.”

The “big fish” that Willis and Kiker landed did more than clue them into the pattern for the day, it also ended being the Mountain Dew Big Bass of the event.  The 6.27-pound largemouth anchored their limit and earned them an additional $500 bonus for catching the day’s largest fish.

The team of Payton McGinnis and John Davis caught 18.20 pounds and finished the day in third place, earning $4,000 in the process.

The Southern Division of the Alabama Bass Trail hits the water next at the Pickwick Lake on May 11.
