Bethel University Rallies To Win College Series Tour At Bull Shoals

MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. — Carter McNeil and Cole Floyd of Bethel University busted an 18-pound, 5-ounce bag today to win the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops at Bull Shoals Lake.

Starting Championship Saturday in sixth place, McNeil and Floyd brought in the biggest bag of the day, second largest of the three-day event, to total 48-6. They finished 1-10 ahead of Day 2 leaders Joshua Boone and Blake Riley of Eastern Kentucky University, who weighed their smallest bag of the week at 13-15 to total 46-12.

“I’m excited about it,” said McNeil, who teamed with Floyd in a second-place finish at the 2017 National Championship on Lake Bemidji in Minnesota. “We’ve been close.

“We lost some good fish this week, everyone did. Today, when I caught our last 4-pounder, we knew we had a chance.”

With the victory, Bethel, a private university in Tennessee that is among several institutions offering bass fishing scholarships, is flexing its muscle of late.

“This is a great thing for these two guys, and for our school,” said Coach Garry Mason, who has had angler John Garrett qualify for the 2017 Bassmaster Classic. “They have almost won everywhere we’ve gone. Now they’ve got one under their belt.

“They’re going to get to fish the national championship again, so this a very exciting time for Bethel University, and also for Carter and Cole. We appreciated how hard they work.”

Work it was on Bull Shoals this week. McNeil and Floyd fished midface on Thursday’s first day, catching a solid bag of 14-10 but standing in the pack at 37th. A better bag of 15-7 in sunny conditions Friday moved them to sixth place, 2-13 out of the lead.

Their Day 3 took them back on a 45-minute run up the river from the takeoff at Bull Shoals Boat Dock.

“We tried to get away from everyone, get in more stained water up the river,” Floyd said. “We were only getting one good bite a day. The first two days, unfortunately, we lost both those fish. We were scared that was going to come back to haunt us.”

“Today, everything just fell into place for us,” McNeil said. “We got the bites we needed and landed the fish.”

The Bethel anglers flipped a tube the first day, then switched to a Berkley creature bait the last two days, flipping to the more isolated bushes.

“We were just flipping the bushes,” Floyd said. “We kind of keyed into shorter pockets off the main lake, something with a little dirtier water. You’d get on the bank side, try to find some that were separated out a little better.

“I think they were up there spawning. The majority of the bites would be right in the middle, but once in a while you’d be swimming it out and get one.”

Second-place anglers Boone and Riley said the big bite that helped them cull to a 17-4 bag on Day 2 eluded them on Championship Saturday, when their bass came on a Zoom Lizard.

“Everything yesterday came on a ChatterBait,” Riley said. “We just didn’t get a big bite today, and we needed one.”

Boone was appreciative of all the help the bass fishing community in the region offered his team.

“You can’t believe how much stuff I tear up on a daily basis,” he said, again thanking the boat dock mechanics, Ranger and Vexus boat workers for their help this week. “I love this community. I want to retire here.”

Boone and Riley weighed the third largest fish in the event at 5-4. Isaac Duncan and Fisher Young of Blue Mountain College tied Luke Mason and Justin Lane of the University of North Alabama for the big bass with fish weighing 5-9.

Duncan and Young finished fourth with 44-7, just 3 ounces behind the third-place team of Dalton Smith and Wil Rigdon of Campbellsville University.

The Top 20 teams not already qualified for the College National Championship advance to the late summer event at a location to be announced.

After crowning a national champion, the top four teams will compete individually in the Carhartt College Bracket with the end prize being a berth to the 2020 Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

The B.A.S.S. crew still has work this week in north central Arkansas, with them moving over to Lake Norfork for the Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School Central Open. A total of 82 teams registered Saturday afternoon for the one-day event. The weigh-in is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. CT. The B.A.S.S. Junior Nation Central Open, with eight teams, will also be held on Norfork, with weigh-in set for approximately 1:30 p.m.

Caleb Kuphall Claims Close Win In Bassmaster Open On Smith Lake

Caleb Kuphall Claims Close Win In Bassmaster Open On Smith Lake

[print_link]

JASPER, Ala. — Caleb Kuphall was nowhere to be found on the list of pre-tournament favorites at the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on Lewis Smith Lake. That changed today, when he won the event with a three-day total weight of 43 pounds, 2 ounces.

Kuphall’s nearest challenger was John Cox of Debary, Fla., who took second with 42-1. Local expert Jordan Wiggins of Cullman was third with 41-3, and David Williams of Newton, NC., settled for fourth with 41-2. Griffin Phillips of Mount Olive, Ala., was fifth with 40-11.

The Mukwonago, Wis., angler was far removed from understanding the nuances of the lake’s nomadic spotted bass. He wisely steered away from what he did not know. Instead, he went searching for largemouth and found enough to keep him in contention to win from the start.

“I came here knowing the dirtiest water would be in the upper reaches of the lake,” Kuphall said. “But I knew that I would need spotted bass in the mix, so I developed a one-two punch for both species.”

Blue herring surfacing near the dam alerted Kuphall to the presence of spotted bass. He began each morning along a 400-yard stretch of chunk rock bank where the bass were feeding upon the bait. With a limit in his livewell Kuphall then traveled to the upper reaches of the lake, where he found a series of pockets lined with shoreline buck brush in stained water.

“It was just what I was looking for, which was the ability to flip buck brush in an area with quality fish,” he said.

The one-two punch of spotted bass and largemouth proved its potential with a Thursday limit weighing 14-4 that put him in ninth place. Friday was a repeat of the productive pattern, and Kuphall returned to the scales with a limit weighing 12-1 that landed him in sixth place. Today proved even better with a final limit weighing 16-13.

Kuphall chose two simple lures that worked specifically for each species. He used homemade 3/8-ounce jigs, one shaped for swimming and the other for flipping, and both tipped with soft plastic crawfish trailers. Green pumpkin was the all-around choice for the jigs and trailers.

“I could see the spotted bass eat the bait in the clear water so all it took was pitching it near them,” he said. “For the largemouth I flipped the jig into the buck brush for the strikes.”

All week the water level was dropping — by as much as 4 feet from the start of practice until today — but that did not hinder his bite.

“The largemouth just moved out with the falling water and staged on new cover,” he explained. “The spotted bass never left because of the food source there along the rocks.”

Cox stayed on the run, choosing a junk fishing pattern of rotating through lures based on the cover he encountered along the way. While the falling water hindered some anglers, it worked in his favor.

“It pulled fish out of the pockets and onto the points,” he explained. “It gave me fresh fish to work on because they never really got caught by other anglers.

Cox’s lure lineup included the new Berkley Choppo 90, which he used as a coverage bait. For slower bites, he used a 5-inch Berkley PowerBait MaxScent The General rigged on a 1/0 Berkley Fusion19 Finesse Wide Gap Hook.

Kuphall won $37,200 and a berth in the 2020 Bassmaster Classic, should he fish the remaining two Central Opens.

Jonathon Barnette of Jasper won the co-angler division after leading all three days. He caught a winning weight of 23-13 and won $18,000, while Todd Lee, also of Jasper, claimed second with 21-11. Keith Honeycutt of Temple, Texas, was third with 21-7, and Mitch Van Ert was fourth with 21-3. Joe Eubanks of Marietta, Ga., was fifth with 21-1.

The Phoenix Big Bass award paid $750 to pro angler Stacy King of Reeds Spring, Mo., for catching a bass weighing 5-11. Dwain Vogelpohl won $250 as the top co-angler with a bass weighing 5-8.

Berkley Cast for Cash rewarded the Top 2 finishing contingency program members in each division. Cox and Greg Pugh of Cullman, Ala., won $1,500 and $1,000, respectively, as the top pros. Barnette and Brian Murphy of Sulphur, La., won $250 and $100 respectively, as the top co-anglers.

Local host was the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County.

BEAVERS WINS COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT ON SANTEE COOPER LAKES PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

BEAVERS WINS COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT ON SANTEE COOPER LAKES PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

South Carolina pro Earns Third Career Victory– Second on Santee Cooper –and earns $86,700

[print_link]

SUMMERTON, S.C. (April 27, 2019) – Pro Bradford Beavers of Summerville, South Carolina, caught a five-bass limit weighing 23 pounds, 7 ounces, to win the weather-shortened Costa FLW Series on Santee Cooper Lakes presented by Power-Pole. The tournament was shortened from three days to two after competition was cancelled Friday due to high winds. Bradford’s two-day total of 10 bass weighing 54 pounds, 9 ounces, was enough to earn him the victory at the Southeastern Division finale and $86,700, including a new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.

“To win on my home lake is quite an accomplishment,” said Beavers, who won the Costa FLW Series Championship on Kentucky Lake in 2017. “I know how good the anglers are here, and it’s a little redemption for the 2014 [FLW Series] event here. I started that final day in second place, but zeroed and ended up finishing ninth. That’s been on my mind for years, so this is great.”

Beavers said he started out fishing on Lake Moultrie each day, targeting shallow cypress trees.

“I started at the best cypress trees I knew of, where the bass were either spawning or coming off the bank,” said Beavers. “I had four areas of trees that I fished there.”

Beavers said that he headed to Lake Marion around 1 p.m. each day, running pretty much ran the same pattern in two general areas, but with one small adjustment.

“I fished even shallower trees on Lake Marion because I felt more [bass] were truly spawning on the upper lake versus Lake Moultrie, so I’d hit trees more in the pocket rather than out in the open,” said Beavers.

The South Carolina pro said he caught seven keepers Thursday and added another nine today. He weighed nearly every fish from a wacky- or Texas-rigged, 5-inch green-pumpkin Yamamoto Senko. One keeper each day came on an Eye Strike Texas Eye jighead with a 3.3-inch shad-colored Keitech swimbait.

“The Eye Strike is like a wobble head with an eye protruding from it. I’d throw it the first 30 minutes because I felt there was a shad spawn going on.”

The top 10 pros on Santee Cooper Lakes finished:

1st:          Bradford Beavers, Summerville, S.C., 10 bass, 54-9, $86,700

2nd:         Lex Costas, Daniel Island, S.C., 10 bass, 50-1, $15,600

4 Buzz Bait Hacks You Need To Try

[print_link]

Everyone loves a good topwater bite. What isn’t to like? Bone chilling strikes that you can see happen. Topwater lures are an adrenaline junkies dream. Perhaps one of the most popular types of topwater lures is the buzzbait. This racket-producing concoction of metal, wire, and lead has been a go-to for anglers for decades. However, there are a few things you can do the next time you are chasing a hot topwater bite to tip the scales a bit more in your favor.

Make It Squeaky

There are tons of popular bait hacks. However, this is one of the most interesting I have ever heard of. When you buy a new buzzbait, it isn’t quite broken it yet. The sound of the buzzer is too pure and consistent. Thus, some anglers will actually hold their buzzbaits out of car window (as long as they aren’t the driver, of course), or run the buzzers under intense flowing water after buying them to “break in” the buzzers. By doing this, it simulates extensive use and will actually cause the buzzer to squeak as it rotates around the wire it is mounted on. The added squeaky sound in addition to the buzzbait’s regular water-chopping splash is irresistible to fish.

Take Your Skirt Off

Another hack buzzbait anglers have been employing for some time is removing the skirts from their baits. This leaves the buzzbait completely naked and allows for the use of a larger trailer whose action is not hindered by a bulky, silicone or rubber skirt. Popular trailers for this type of presentation include medium or full-sized plastic swimbaits. This presentation is not for the faint of heart as the size of fish typically caught with this technique are quite large.

Go Goth On ‘Em

In clear water or bluebird conditions, bass can become quite finicky about how they want their topwaters presented to them. In situations like this, a popular buzzbait hack is to paint/Sharpie the buzzer or to buy a black bladed buzzbait. This does not throw as much reflection from available light and doesn’t spook finicky fish that still want to eat something on top.

The Magic Micro Buzzbait

Lastly, another crucial hack is to simply use a smaller buzzbait. There are plenty of micro-sized baits on the market, but one of my favorites is the Booyah Pond Magic Buzz. These tiny baits work awesome on spinning tackle and still trigger jarring strikes. They work best under high fishing pressure circumstances and are a great way to put more fish in the boat on a tough day.

Eastern Kentucky Takes Over Lead In Bassmaster College Series Tour

MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. — Not two days ago, mechanical issues had Joshua Boone and Blake Riley thinking they should head home.

Overcoming a number of problems, the teammates from Eastern Kentucky University are glad they stayed, especially after taking the lead in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops at Bull Shoals Lake.

Boone and Riley weighed in 17 pounds, 14 ounces today, including the big fish of the day at 5-4, for a two-day total of 32-13. In second place is Isaac Duncan and Fisher Young of Blue Mountain College in Mississippi with 31-10. The Top 12 are within about 3 pounds of one another.

“The day before yesterday, we were almost dead-set on going back home because we didn’t have a trolling motor,” Boone said. “We had great help from the Bull Shoals Boat Dock. They gave us a trolling motor to use. One that I tore up, the Ranger plant fixed for us. So now we have two working trolling motors.”

The mechanics at the boat dock also fixed their balky big motor after Day 1 — “got us right in and fixed us right up,” Boone said.

Despite the equipment troubles, EKU found and caught plenty of bass — around 70 today in sunny conditions after about half that number during Thursday’s rain. Riley said they were catching fish after fish shortly after first putting in for practice.

“When we got here, we put a new trolling motor on, and within five minutes we started catching fish,” he said. “We were getting one big bite a day. Day 1 we didn’t, but we got that big one today.”

That was Boone’s 5-4, and it gave them the day’s heaviest bag.

Duncan and Young brought in 15-1 today after a Day 1 limit of 16-9. They climbed to second after being tied for seventh.

“We’re having to run through a bunch of numbers to get a big bite,” Young said. “Both days, we’ve caught a 5-pounder in the last hour of the day. We are really fortunate and are thanking the Lord above for having the opportunity to keep catching fish.”

Duncan still holds the big bass lead with his 5-9.

“It definitely wasn’t my biggest fish, but it was very special fish to me,” he said. “It was really cool to see my name on Bassmaster’s website last night leading big fish. Just as a little kid, fishing high school, college, you see the names atop the leaderboard and you just dream of being there one day.”

This is the second Top 12 Duncan has made this year. He finished sixth on Lake Norman in February, when he was fishing solo.

“It’s really been a humbling and incredibly year, just seeing the things that God can do when you put your trust in Him,” Duncan said. “We feel like we’ve dialed in our pattern and put the pieces of the puzzle together. We feel like we got it dialed in to a T.”

Duncan said the Blue Mountain team has been alternating between two effective baits and, like EKU, they believe they can catch the abundant 2- to 3-pounders in Bull Shoals but say another big bite will be key to their chances.

“I think we’ll need a 17-pound bag,” Young said. “Can’t say we’ll be comfortable, but we’ll be right there. If we catch 18, that might seal the deal.”

Boone and Riley are of the same thinking. The kicker fish are critical but certainly not easy to come by.

“The big ones are hard to pattern,” Boone said. “We’ve caught them all through the day, but there are so many 3-pounders in this lake, it’s hard to differentiate where the big ones are going to be. With what little practice we had due to mechanical issues, we found a few key areas holding better fish.”

And even when a nut on their battery terminal made them believe their trolling motor was yet again dead today, they made the best of it.

“We lost power to the trolling motor for 45 minutes. During that time we put our Power-Pole down and caught three fish, and one of our biggest keepers,” said Boone, who added it should take them at least 16 pounds to have a shot at winning.

The Top 12 teams will launch from Bull Shoals Boat Dock at 6:30 a.m. CT Saturday. The championship weigh-in moves to Mountain Home High School and will begin at approximately 3:15 p.m.

David Williams Takes Over Lead In Bassmaster Open At Smith Lake

[print_link]

JASPER, Ala. — Florida pro David Williams moved from third place into the lead today, jumping ahead of the Thursday leader and runner-up at the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on Lewis Smith Lake.

Only ounces separate Williams, Jordan Wiggins and John Cox, setting up the potential for a shootout at the scales on Saturday. Williams, of Newton, N.C., caught 15 pounds, 1 ounce, bringing his total weight to 30-12. Wiggins, of Cullman, Ala., dropped to second with 13 pounds and an overall weight of 30-8. Cox, of Debary, held on to third place with 30-1 after weighing 12-14.

Williams is fishing Smith Lake for only the third time, but he was able to find consistently solid daily limits of bass averaging a little more than 3 pounds apiece.

To get that average, Williams had to boat a couple of heavier bass each day.

With only two lightweight keepers in the livewell by midday Thursday, Williams made a pivotal 30-mile run to a new portion of the lake. The result was a limit weighing 15-11 that he boated within 30 minutes. He made the area his first stop today, and quickly caught a limit that included back-to-back 4-pound largemouth.

“During practice I launched from ramps at opposite sides of the lake,” Williams said. “By nothing more than fate, the best quality fishing areas were the farthest apart.”

Williams described his best spot as a transitional spawning area between a shallow cove and the deeper water. With nothing else to go on he relied on a “junk fishing” pattern to catch his fish both days.

Today, the buzz among the anglers was the shad spawn, which is attracting hungry postspawn largemouth to shallow water. The bass are feeding upon the shad during early morning, when the low light provides ambush concealment from the prey.

“It’s a different lake after the sun comes up,” said Cox. “The bite really turns on early, and timing is everything.”

Timing in his case means being at the best fishing spots early as possible. That didn’t work out as well today, when compared to the 17-3 caught by Cox on Thursday.

“I just got out of sync and the rotation was off,” he explained. “I will regroup tonight and try it again tomorrow.”

That means continuing to rely on a junk fishing pattern, or making as many stops as possible on promising areas and using multiple lures to trigger strikes.

Wiggins, the first-day leader, agreed that his bite was all about timing, and being in the right place when the shad were spawning on the shoreline.

“I ran the same pattern as Thursday, and the timing was just off,” Wiggins said. “I had to change to a worm; otherwise I probably wouldn’t have caught anything.”

Jonathon Barnette of Jasper, Ala., continued leading the co-anglers with 17-9. Keith Honeycutt of Temple, Texas, moved from 60th into second place with a total of 16 pounds. Todd Lee of Jasper holds down third place with 15-4. John Brown of Deltona, Fla., is fourth with 15 pounds, and Mike Spears of Jasper is fifth with 14-15.

On Saturday the Top 12 pros and co-anglers compete. The $63,000 cash purse will be divided between the winners, with $37,000 for the top pro and $18,000 for the co-angler.

Contingency awards pay bonus cash to eligible anglers. The Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the tournament pays $750 to the pro and $250 for the co-angler. Berkley Cast for Cash rewards the Top 2 finishing contingency program members in each division. The pros get $1,500 and $1,000, while $250 and $100 go to the co-anglers.

Stacy King of Reeds Spring, Mo., leads the big bass competition among the pros with his catch weighing 5-11. The bass weighing 5-8 caught by Vogelpohl leads the co-angler side. Both fish were caught on Thursday.

Takeoff on Saturday is at 6 a.m. CT from Smith Lake Dam Access. The final weigh-in begins at 3:30 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in Leeds, a suburb of Birmingham.

Local host is the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County.
