Bryan College Takes The First-Round Lead In Bassmaster College Series Tournament On Bull Shoals

MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. — After a slow, dark morning, things brightened quickly for Cole Sands and Conner Dimauro of Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn.

With only four small bass by late morning, the team found a key stretch of water today that helped them total 19 pounds, 4 ounces and take the Day 1 lead at the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops at Bull Shoals Lake.

In second place are Will Andrie and Gaige Blanton of Kansas State University with 18-0. Taylor Hamburger and Tristen Turley of Oklahoma State University are third with 17-6. The 199 teams brought 2,458 pounds of fish to the scales on a rainy day.

“We had an unbelievable practice,” Sands said. “Good bags on this lake are 15 to 18 pounds. We got here Tuesday around noon for the first day of practice and our best five went about 21 pounds. We were trying not to catch them.

“Today, we started off in a couple areas where we saw some good fish, and it was slow to start with. We only had one by 10 a.m., then pieced together four keepers for about 10 pounds. Then at around 11, we went down one bank and caught six keepers.”

That seemed to open the floodgates to go to their bigger fish. The team culled up to around 16 pounds and then decided to try for one of the largest bedding fish they had marked in practice. Dimauro caught the 4-pounder within three minutes of getting to the spot at around 2 p.m.

Confident their 17-plus bag would put them in contention, they went looking for more fish in other pockets.

“It was our last cast, and Conner flips a bait in the bush and sets the hook on a 4 ½-pounder. It was the biggest fish of the day,” Sands said.

“Obviously, conditions today were different from practice; it was overcast with a little bit of chop from the wind and rain, but we threw some baits in areas that we knew there would be a lot of fish in,” said Dimauro, noting their fruitful practice. “We were seeing a lot of fish. The water here is incredibly clear.

“It was harder to sight fish for them today, but we knew they were there. We were able to catch some of those fish we had been seeing. There are empty beds everywhere. I’d say that for every five beds we saw, one of them might have a fish still on it.”

The Kansas State team said practice clued them in on what the fish were doing, but they pretty much just “went fishing.”

“We had about 10 or 12 spots we picked out from practice and just ran a rotation,” Andrie said. “We fished anything that would look good. If they were there, they were there.”

The team caught a limit in the first 20 minutes and then upgraded by ounces until they caught two of their 4-pound class fish in the afternoon.

“We had one key bite to fill our limit in the morning,” Blanton said. “Then we upgraded by ounces for about three hours. Then with 30 minutes to go, we had two really key bites (4-pounders). The afternoon is when we got our bigger bites.”

Conditions will change for Day 2, with the forecast calling for sunny skies and temperatures climbing from a morning low near 50 to the lower 70s by afternoon. Dimauro believes his team needs about 15 pounds to make Saturday’s championship.

“It’s going to be completely different conditions tomorrow, but it will be like the days we had in practice,” he said.

“We’re confident we can key something together — just kind of roll with it and keep the same game plan. We know we’re going to be around some fish, but we’ll just have to figure out what they want each day. We saved quite a few fish. We have several on bed that we want to hit.”

And they know that even with another slow start, they have to keep their heads in the game because the bite can turn on like it did today.

“No matter where we’re sitting, we know it can all happen so fast,” Dimauro said.

The big bass of the day were 5-9 bass landed by the Blue Mountain College team of Isaac Duncan and Fisher Young and Luke Mason and Justin Lane of the University of North Alabama. Duncan and Young are seventh with a total of 16-9, while the UNA team is 77th with 13-8.

It was a good day for many of the of teams, 13 of which brought in more than 16 pounds. There were 15 teams topping 15 pounds and another 30 teams that caught more than 14 pounds. There were 173 limits.

The teams will again launch from Bull Shoals Boat Dock at 6:30 a.m. CT, and the weigh-in there will begin at 2:30 p.m. The Top 12 teams advance to fish on Saturday, and the Top 20 teams will qualify for the College National Championship, with the end prize one berth to the 2020 Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods after a College Bracket fishoff.

Jordan Wiggins Leads Smith Lake Open

JASPER, Ala. — Jordan Wiggins experienced what he called “a magical day” in taking the lead at the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on Smith Lake.

Wiggins, of Cullman, Ala., caught a five-bass limit weighing 17 pounds, 8 ounces. Just 5 ounces behind him is John Cox of Debary, Fla., with 17-3 and David Williams of Newton, N.C., is third with 15-11. Wes Logan of Springville, Ala., and Griffin Phillips of Mount Olive, Ala., are tied for fourth with 15 pounds.

Experiencing a magical day is a big statement from an angler who calls the 21,000-acre northern Alabama fishery his home lake. Wiggins, a top local tournament angler, indeed had a magical day, considering his achievements on Thursday.

He caught a mixed heavyweight bag of spotted bass and largemouth. That is a trick to do given the nomadic nature of both species on this lake. The postspawn largemouth are moving back to deep water, and recent high water has those fish spread out and challenging to track down. The spotted bass, also in the postspawn phase, are searching for food after the stresses of spawning.

Wiggins worked his magic in the same spot. That is another mismatch given the prevailing conditions. That spot was a pocket located off the main lake with the strike zone from 1 to 10 feet of water. And finally, the 17-pound mixed bag was swimming inside his livewell by noon, only midway into the competition day.

Can he work the magic again Friday?

“I should be able to because it’s how we fish here this time of year,” he said. “It’s not that uncommon to catch what I did, but to do it so quickly and exactly from the same area, that’s not so common.”

Wiggins said the magic continued with the appearance of the largemouth, which he had not seen during practice. Those bonus fish added to his weight and gave promise that he can leverage both species to his advantage.

“The changing weather, cloudy skies and rain helped make them start moving again,” he explained. “I feel good about catching another mixed bag on Friday and again on Saturday.”

Cox ran a “junk fishing” pattern, choosing his lures and techniques based on the area where he fished at the time. Today’s success required covering a lot of water, rotating through lures and picking apart any bass cover he encountered along the way.

“I went through a lot of numbers to catch the quality,” said Cox. “I have figured out something for Friday.”

That is good news considering his track record here.

“I have yet to do the same thing on this lake for two days in a row,” he admitted. “I find something one day and it changes the next.”

Cox added he plans to continue covering water to build on his success of today. What he does know is the weather will change again Friday, and so will the patterns. The forecast calls for clearing skies and warmer temperatures after the rainfall clouded the skies on Thursday.

The full field of 185 boats with a pros and co-anglers are fishing through Friday. On Saturday, only the Top 12 anglers from each division compete. The $63,000 cash purse will be divided between the winners, with $37,000 for the top pro and $18,000 for the co-angler.

Leading the co-angler division is Jonathan Barnette with 12-1. Barnette, a Jasper resident, fished today with second-place pro angler John Cox. David Vogelpohl of Cambridge, Minn., is second with 9-8, while Xeng Lee of Onalaska, Wis., is third with 8-9. Cameron Naquin of Gray, La., holds down fourth place with 8-4, and Chandler Sickafoose is fifth with 8-2.

Contingency awards sweeten the pot with the Phoenix Big Bass of the tournament paying $750 to the pro and $250 for the co-angler. The Berkley Cast for Cash bait contingency program will pay bonus cash to the Top 2 anglers in each division. The pros get $1,500 and $1,000, while $250 and $100 go to the co-anglers.

Stacy King of Reeds Spring, Mo., leads the big bass competition in the pro division with his catch weighing 5-11. The bass weighing 5-8 caught by Vogelpohl leads the co-angler side.

Daily takeoffs begin at 6 a.m. CT from Smith Lake Dam Access. The Friday weigh-in begins there at 2 p.m. The final weigh-in on Saturday is at 3:30 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in Leeds, a suburb of Birmingham.

Local host is the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County.

Picture: A great time to catch crappie is during the spring time at Smith Mtn. Lake

OVERVIEW: Fishing has been good. Water temperature has risen rapidly the past several days. Bait fish are in shallow water spawning this month. Most species of fish will be spawning this as water temperature rise.

Largemouth Bass- Fishing will be good this month. Best lures will be jigs, drop shot rigs, crank baits, swim baits, Ned rigs and top water lures. Most largemouth bass will be caught on secondary points, shallow coves, stumps and docks. Best depths will be from 2 to 10 feet deep. Largemouth bass will start to feed at night this month. Rocks, stumps and shallow brush are a key factor to finding bass this month. Please release the bass when they are spawning.

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing should be better. Best areas will be rocks, stumps, and secondary points. Best lures will be jig & pig, Ned rigs, hair jigs, top water lures and medium running crank baits. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Most smallmouth bass will spawing this month. Cloudy days are good times to try your luck! Light line will increase your chances to catch smallmouth bass.

Striped Bass- Fishing will be good. Stripers will be caught in the lower sections of the lake and in
the larger creeks. Best lures will be red fins, Alabama rigs, swim baits, top water lures and Zoom flukes fished on 1/4 to 3/8 oz. lead heads. The best depths will be from near the surface to 40 feet deep. Try to find areas with the largest concentrations of baitfish. Fishing at night will be good this month. Some schools of stripers will surface this month. Live bait fished on planner boards and down lines will also be good this month.

Crappie- Fishing for crappie will be good this month. Crappie will continue to spawn this month. They will be found 2 to 15 feet deep. Best areas will be in the main creeks around docks, fallen trees, stumps and brush piles in the mid to upper parts of the lake. Small live minnows and 1 ½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/32 to 1/16 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month.

TIP OF THE Month: Fishing during the early morning, late afternoon and night is usually the best time to fish. The fish will relate to the shallow areas because of warmer water temperature and they will be spawning. Make sure you wear your life jacket. You can never be too careful when boating. Remember to please practice catch and release! PLEASE TAKE A KID FISHING!

3 Fishing Knots Every Angler Needs To Know

[print_link]

The critical link to catching fish is the knot that binds your line and lure. Expensive gear and superior line are worthless if you can’t tie a strong knot. Line can be tied to a hook a lot of different ways, but the average angler only needs to learn a handful of knots for most techniques.
Here are three basic knots every angler needs to know how to tie.

Improved Clinch Knot

This is the most widely used and easiest knot to tie line onto a hook or lure.
The knot can be tied in four easy steps:

  1. Thread about 8 inches of line through the hook eye.
  2. Double the line against itself and twist six times.
  3. Thread the end of the tag line through the loop formed above the hook eye and then through the larger loop you just created.
  4. Moisten and pull the tag and main line so the coiled line tightens down on the hook eye.

The Palomar Knot

This highly efficient knot works best for securing super lines and braid to a hook.

  1. The first step in tying this knot is to double the line and form a 3- to 4-inch loop, which you pass through the hook eye.
  2. Tie an overhand knot in the doubled line and pass the hook through the loop of the doubled line.
  3. The last step requires pulling the tag line and the main line evenly to clinch the knot.

The Alberto knot

This is a great knot for tying two lines together such as linking fluorocarbon and braided lines.

  1. Make a loop with the fluorocarbon leader and hold it between your thumb and forefinger.
  2. Insert the braided line through the loop and wrap it around the loop at least six times.
  3. Switch hands and wrap the braid back towards the entry point of the loop with the same amount of loops as you used in Step 2. Pass the braid back out of the loop in the same direction as you started.
  4. Wet and hold all four lines at the same time and slowly push the braided wraps to the middle of the leader loop. Make sure none of the braid loops roll on top or over the other braid loops. Snug the knot and snip the tag lines of the fluorocarbon and braid.

LIVETARGET®’s Golden Shiner Rattlebaits Are A Multi-Species Phenom

The Most Versatile Rattlebait Ever?

LIVETARGET®’s Golden Shiner Rattlebaits Are A Multi-Species Phenom

[print_link]

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (April 24, 2019) – Veteran freshwater anglers know how important it is to keep quiet on the approach. Bang a tackle box against the gunwale, drag a cooler across the deck or wade a little too forcefully and predator species instantly scatter. Get the right sounds working below the surface, however, and you can really light up the bite, which is why lipless rattlebaits continue to attract a growing legion of fans.

Most rattlebaits have a lot going for them right from the start. In addition to all that fish-attracting subsurface noise, game fish can feel the vibrations these lures produce from a significant distance and home in on the target. The flash and wiggle as they rip through the water can also be a head turner since the basic shape of most models mimic baitfish species of various sizes. As a genre, rattlebaits also lend themselves well to a variety of retrieves.

Still, most anglers would rather have a little more than a little less when it comes to fish-catching potential and design. That makes the LIVETARGET® Golden Shiner Rattlebait worth serious consideration when laying out your heavy hitter arsenal. Wide at the shoulders and deep through the body, these multi-species baits sport a super-detailed profile to augment a perfectly pitched harmonic rattle. Already recognized as one of the most versatile lipless hardbaits ever created for largemouths, bronzebacks and spotted bass, Golden Shiner Rattlebaits are just as likely to tempt landlocked stripers, walleye, trout, pike and slab-sized panfish.

Of course, first impressions are important when it comes to crossing paths with pressured lunkers, but it’s the fine details that make a rattlebait great. Check out these lures and you’ll see plenty of technological innovation rolled into a remarkably lifelike and compact package. For starters, they are internally weighted, exceptionally balanced and brandish a pair of super-sharp premium Daiichi® hooks. Hold a LIVETARGET® Golden Shiner Rattlebait in your palm and you’ll notice it feels slightly denser than other rattlebaits of similar size. That little bit of extra weight allows smaller sizes to cast farther, reach greater depths and fall with a tantalizing, medium-speed sink rate that’s simply irresistible. Cast one out and watch it fly across the water. Reel it in and feel the tight wiggle and strong vibrations that closely match the real McCoy.

Getting back to that lifelike finish, the LIVETARGET® Golden Shiner Rattlebait series is designed to perfectly mimic young golden shiners as you might expect, but it also matches up well with juvenile shad and other baitfish species. Hold one up for close inspection and you’ll notice three-dimensional scales, fins, gill slits and lively eyes. As for versatility, try a broken retrieve around structure for black bass or troll across open water with your kayak or electric motor to locate schools of landlocked stripers. Vertical jigging works well when your targets are tightly schooled, especially if these lures are allowed to fall on completely slack lines. You can also rip them along weed edges, or use a “retrieve and drop” approach. It’s all good.

With nine natural-looking color patterns and three sizes to choose from, there’s plenty of opportunity to match the hatch or most any specific fishing situation. The brand new 2” (¼ oz.) size provides an edge in clear water and early spring when temperatures are still on the cool side. It’s also effective throughout the summer whenever predators key on small baitfish. The larger 2 3/8” (1/4 oz.) or 2 7/8” (1/2 oz.) sizes pick up steam as waters warm and target species grow increasingly more aggressive.

Interestingly, some anglers are also using these lures straight through the winter for ice-fishing, both as a primary point of attack and to draw fish from surrounding waters directly beneath their holes with the combination of that tight rattling sound and sharp vibrations from rapid twitches. Walleye and jumbo yellow perch respond particularly well when several anglers work LIVETARGET® Golden Shiner Rattlebaits simultaneously using sharp, 1-foot snaps of the rod. Tip the front hook with half a shiner and there’s no telling what you might haul through the ice. Catch the action on an Aqua-Vu underwater fishing camera for even more fun and thrills.

One overlooked but important aspect of these super versatile lures is their cast-ability. Perfectly balanced, they fire straight and true with rarely a tangle so you can reach out to the fish without risk of spooking skittish schools or busting up the baitfish pods. That extra distance can be a real deal-maker around surfacing bass in open water, or when casting for early spring walleye and stripers in the flows below a dam following winter shad kills. In both instances, a pop ‘n drop approach can lead to savage strikes and big innings.

In terms of rigging these super lipless rattlebaits, a 6’10” to 7’2” medium action St. Croix Legend Glass series casting or spinning rod is ideal for most applications. Pair that with a 6:1 gear ratio reel and 15-lb test Seaguar Smackdown fluorocarbon line because it’s tough, has a thin diameter for ultimate casting distance, and digs deep on the troll or retrieve. For a leader, run an 18-inch section of 15- to 20-lb. test Seaguar Tatsu™ fluorocarbon directly to the lure. Buy a spool to use strictly as leader material and it can last for years.

With LIVETARGET®’s focus on lifelike patterns, there aren’t any flashy fire tiger or bright red options in the Golden Shiner Rattlebait line-up. Then again, the natural shades and soft glow selections have been covering all the bases – and all the “basses” – so there seems little reason to mess with success
