April 20, 2019 – Prattville, Ala. – Just when springtime breaks and perfect conditions begin to arrive, it seems the weather throws bass anglers for a loop.  While the temperatures and rainfall had been stable and light in the period leading up to the third stop of the Alabama Bass Trail Southern Division’s third stop, it changed drastically the two days prior to the event.

Heavy rainfall and cooler temperatures greeted anglers during practice on Thursday and Friday, and with it came a nearly 20-degree drop in temperatures, and a two foot rise in water level.  However difficult those conditions can be, the team of Dusty Jordan and Alex Bowdoin figured out the conditions and brought 18.35 pounds to the scales at Cooter’s Pond to claim victory and the $10,000 winner’s prize.

They credited Jordan riding with a former Elite Series pro for their win.  “I learned a lot from Ott DeFoe when the Bassmaster Elite Series fished here last time,” said Jordan.  “The conditions were very similar, and he put on a big time clinic in that high water, and we were able to use those tactics today to win this tournament.”

They reported using a pear white 5-inch Berkley Swimbait rigged on a 3/4-ounce head as well as a heavy Shaky Head and NetBait T-Mac worm to catch their fish.  “We were fishing a hump upriver, and caught a 16-pound limit early, then culled to this weight by early afternoon,” they said.  “This is a very special feeling because these are great anglers, and we’ve wanted a win like this for a long time.  To do it after having a tough practice round, then making adjustments and having it turn out this way makes it even better; we’re thrilled.”

Rob Lee and Steve Winslett have been in this position before – at Cooter’s Pond – having finished second at this same venue in 2018.  “We can’t feel anything but good about this outcome, because after the practice we had we are lucky to have even caught a decent limit,” they said.  “This is a much better outcome then we expected, we were just hoping to salvage some points, this is a big outcome for us.”  The reported catching all of their fish in current on a 7-inch green pumpkin chartreuse tail Big Bite Bait Company Finesse worm on homemade 1/4 and 5/16-ounce Shaky Heads; they earned $5,000 for their performance, along with the $1,000 America’s Fist bonus for financing their boat purchase with America’s First Credit Union.”

Joe Wickoff and Radney Atchison stayed in Cooter’s Pond and caught 17.49 pounds on a 1/2-ounce chartreuse with gold blades Thunder Baits spinnerbait made by Wickoff.  The pair earned $4,000 for their efforts.

Fishing without his partner Kyle Dorsett, and anchored by the 5.34-pound Mountain Dew Big Bass of the tournament Allen Yarborough, posted a limit worth 17.42 pounds to finish fourth. He earned $3,000 for his top finish, and his big bass earned the $500 bonus for being the heaviest fish of the tournament.

The Southern Division of the Alabama Bass Trail hits the water next at the Lay Lake on May 18.

Texas’ James Biggs Seals The Win In B.A.S.S. Nation Regional On Guntersville

[print_link]

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — James Biggs could’ve slept in and still won the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional on Lake Guntersville, but instead the Euless, Texas boater caught a five-bass limit of 19 pounds, 9 ounces and slammed the door on a dominant wire-to-wire victory with a three-day total of 70-2.

After taking the Day 1 lead with 25-4, Biggs entered the second day with a margin of 2-12. Adding 25-5 — the event’s heaviest catch — increased his lead to 16-7. In the final round, second-place boater Jeremy Montgomery’s tournament total of 49-7 fell a pound and 2 ounces shy of Biggs’ combined weight from the first two days.

Adding his final day’s catch gave Biggs a winning margin of 20-11. Notably, that margin was more weight than anyone except Montgomery caught on Day 1.

Biggs said he intentionally built his weight as high as possible — even at the risk of fishing out his spot — because he knew the warm, mostly sunny conditions prevalent during the first two days would yield to the approaching cold front. After a rainy night, Day 3 brought a significant temperature drop, with big winds starting around mid morning. Getting his work done early was essential, Biggs said.

“Today went pretty well and I had almost 20 pounds by about 10 o’clock,” he said. “I actually got off the spot and gave it to my buddy to try to win the co-angler side. His boater wasn’t on fish, so I gave him that spot.

“I got closer to the ramp and just fished around. My nonboater (Justin Hymel) was able to fill out his limit close to the ramp and pull off the win.”

Fishing the upper end of the lake, near Goose Pond, Biggs caught his Day 3 fish with one of the two techniques he had used the first two days. The swimbait bite he had enjoyed went away in the final round, but his Dialed Baits ArmBreaker stickworm still performed.

Biggs rigged this bait Texas style with a light weight and dragged it along shell bottoms. Presentation pace, he noted, proved to be a key element of his success.

“I was dragging it really slow,” Biggs said. “You move it a foot, let it sit 10-15 seconds and just move it really, really slow.”

Biggs’ performance helped Oklahoma win the state title at this week’s event.

Montgomery’s second-place finish capped a consistent week that saw him take second on Day 1 with 22-8. The boater from Overland Park, Kan., slipped to fourth on Day 2 after missing his limit by one fish and weighing a 10-pound, 7-ounce bag, but made up the ground on Day 3 after catching a limit that went 16-8.

Montgomery caught his fish on a 1/4-ounce shaky head with a green pumpkin Zoom Magnum Finesse Worm. He said the final round weather didn’t affect him because most of his action came before the windy conditions began.

“I did most of my damage in the morning, right away,” he said. “I took advantage of the calm weather, got on my grassy humps and was able to slow down. I caught two really good quality fish right away, caught two more and then went running around. I got lucky at the end of the day. With 30 minutes to go, I caught another 4-pounder.”

Montgomery said the humps he fished rose 3 to 4 feet, with grass drops in 5 to 7 feet. His most productive presentation was throwing his bait on top of the humps and pulling it down to the grass.

Keith Glasgow of Guin, Ala., finished third with 49-6 after his tie with Louisiana boater Howard Hartley was broken by the heaviest single day catch — in this case, Glasgow’s Day 3 limit of 21-3. Glasgow, who made a big comeback from 64th on Day 1, got the ball rolling quickly on the final day and then focused on upgrading.

“I started off shallow on a shad spawn and caught a decent limit on a ChatterBait and a Carolina rig,” he said. “After that, I started fishing ledges in about 14 feet in the mouths of spawning pockets with Strike King 6XD, 8XD and 10 XD and a Carolina rig with a Zoom Magnum Finesse Worm. That’s the first place they move when they come off the beds.”

Josh Hilton of Clarksville, Ark., won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award with his 8-12.

Justin Hymel of Norco, La., won the nonboater division with 32-10. After tying for third on Day 1 with 11-15, Hymel added 9-2 in the second round and took the lead. He sealed the deal on Day 3 with a three-bass limit that weighed 11-9.

“Yesterday, I didn’t catch my last keeper until 10 minutes left to fish; today, I caught my last keeper about 30 minutes before check in,” Hymel said of his down-to-the-wire win. “Keep your head in it every time. You never know, so don’t give up.”

The first two days of the event, Hymel caught most of his fish on a wacky-rigged stickworm. Today, he caught one of his keepers on a Texas-rigged Missile Baits Baby D Stroyer, one on a Texas-rigged Dialed Baits ArmBreaker and his third on a wacky-rigged ArmBreaker.

Lacson Reid of Eclectic, Ala., won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among nonboaters with an 8-0.

The top boater and top nonboater from each competing state advances to the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship on Lake Hartwell, November 6-8.

Anglers Face Postspawn, Falling Water For Smith Lake Open

JASPER, Ala. — Dealing with changing weather and the postspawn are givens during spring tournaments, and those conditions will be in play at the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open coming up on Lewis Smith Lake in Alabama.

The tournament will be held April 25-27, with daily takeoffs at 6 a.m. CT from Smith Lake Dam Access, where the daily weigh-ins begin at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday the final weigh-in is at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in Leeds, a suburb of Birmingham. A field of 190 boats will compete on the first two days with only the Top 12 pros and co-anglers advancing to the final round.

“There is a lot going on, from the rising and falling water, to the postspawn funk with the largemouth and some of the spotted bass,” explained David Kilgore, a longtime Opens pro and Bassmaster Classic qualifier from Jasper.

Kilgore said the north Alabama lake remained above full pool for three weeks, and then returned to near normal in recent days. Heavy rainfall going into Easter weekend raised the level again. The lake will be falling through practice until the tournament begins.

Falling water and sluggish postspawn bass. Tournament anglers cringe at the thought of having to deal with both challenges, and that is how Smith Lake is setting up.

Kilgore lives and works just minutes from the 21,000-acre lake, and he won the 2014 tournament on Smith and placed 10th in the 2017 Open. Based on the current conditions, Kilgore predicts a winning weight of 45 pounds. Catching 15 pounds each day will be a tall order. Daily limits of 11 pounds will be more common.

“Those same five-bass limits weighed 15 pounds before the spawn, and it will take going through a lot of fish to get above that 10- or 11-pound mark,” he said. “The fish are just really skinny right now after coming off the spawn.”

Choosing between largemouth and spotted bass is always a decision to be made here. The lake is loaded with spotted bass, and Kilgore sees those fish as the most reliable for the tournament.

“The largemouth will be hard to pattern in that high water, depending on where it is by the tournament, and you will have to run a lot of areas to fill out a decent limit,” Kilgore said. “They will be spread out and it’ll be a bonus if you can catch a decent largemouth.”

Not surprisingly, you can expect to find Kilgore offshore.

“The spots will be in their usual places and it can be easily won on them,” he said. “What it’ll come down to is finding a reliable concentration of spots that can hold up for three days of the tournament.”

Kilgore said the herring bite that makes the lake such a spotted bass powerhouse has not materialized yet.

“It normally begins in late April or early May but we have already had a really wet spring and with everything else you can’t count on it to be in play,” he said.

How To Effectively Fish Docks During The Bass Spawn – MTB

How To Effectively Fish Docks During The Bass Spawn

[print_link]

Bass spawn every spring and knowing where to find fish during this time is key. One good place to locate spawning bass is near fishing docks. Many bass seek shelter in flooded timber or next to laydowns or big rocks, but on my home waters of Lake of the Ozarks numerous bass build their nests behind boat docks.

The docks offer plenty of protection for bass from wind and intruders because the nesting fish can seek shelter behind cables, next to pillars, under walkways and in sunken brush piles. The thousands of docks on my lake gives spawning bass plenty of options but choosing which docks to target during the spawn could be like trying to find a needle in a haystack for a novice angler.

Finding The Right Dock

Bass Spawn
Finding the right dock and then recognizing a pattern is essential in staying consistent.

The best way to find docks harboring spawning bass is keying on location. I have found most of the spawning bass on my lake prefer building nest behind docks in the backs of coves or in pea gravel pockets. Some spotted bass will build their nests behind large community docks on the main lake or docks situated in the small pockets of bluffs.

The most dilapidated dock you can find in a cove usually attracts spawning bass. There are usually broken pieces of the walkway or other debris from the dock hanging down in the water that bass use as shelter for their nests. Docks with pillars are prime spawning spots for bass because the fish will build nests next to the supports.

Big Fish In Hard To Reach Places

Bass Spawn
Bass seek shelter during the spawn, hard to reach areas are known for holding fish.

Floating docks held in place by a series of cables are dominant on my home lake. Any docks with two or three sets of cables extending from the pier to the bank are prime nesting spots for bass. If a dock has multiple cables making it difficult to cast behind it, bass will flock to this floating structure for security. I have seen some bass build their nest right under the cables because they seem to know most anglers won’t throw into the metal cables. I have also seen bass fry hang under cables after the spawn so I wonder if it is ingrained into a bass’ brain that dock cables are their security blanket.
When checking a row of docks for spawning fish, it’s best to skip any docks where you don’t see around, shiny spot on the bottom, which is the telltale sign of a bass nest. Usually, the biggest bass are on the nest you can barely see in deeper water.

They May Be Deeper Than You Think

Bass Spawn
Bass spawn at various depths so start off fishing deep and work you way shallow.

Bass often build multiple nests behind bigger docks, so make sure you fish the deepest area behind the dock first rather than any nest you can see close to the bank. If you fish the visible shallow beds first, you will probably have your boat almost sitting over a big bass on a nest in deeper water. That fish will probably spook off its nest and you missed out on the chance to catch the biggest bass behind the dock.

The height of the cables determines where you should position your boat to catch nesting fish behind a dock. If the cables droop down into the water, you can move your boat up next to the moorings and flip your lure to the rear of the dock. If the cables hang above the water’s surface, you should keep your boat 5 feet or more away from the cables so you can skip your lure under the dock supports.

Baitcaster Vs Spinning?

Bass Spawn
Using a Casting vs Spinning rod can depend on water clarity, nearby cover, and the mood of the fish.

Even though you will be fishing around menacing metal and wood objects that can easily cut your line, you can use either heavy baitcast tackle or lightweight spinning gear to catch spawning bass behind docks. When fishing murky water I use line as heavy as 25-pound test fluorocarbon, but in the clearest sections of my lake I drop drown to 12-pound test for my baitcasting tackle and 8-or 10-pound line for my spinning gear.

Once I find some nesting bass behind docks, I have about five or six rods with various lures attached on the deck of my boat for tempting the fish. I either pitch over the cables to the nests or skip my lures beneath the overhanging cables and walkways.

Best Baits For The Bass Spawn

Bass Spawn
A Mystery Tackle Box subscription will help prep you for the spawn.

Some of my favorite lures to pitch on baitcasting tackle are jigs with plastic craw trailers, Zara Spooks, double-tail plastic grubs, shaky head plastic worms and Texas-rigged plastic creature baits or plastic lizards. My lure choices for skipping behind docks with spinning gear include soft plastic jerkbaits, tube baits and wacky-rigged Senkos and floating worms.

The real challenge for catching spawning bass behind a dock occurs when the fish bites and you set the hook. Trying to coax a stubborn bass through pillars and around cables can be a hair-raising ordeal. However, with your drag set right so the bass can make some short runs without breaking your line and some patience you can eventually wear down the fish and lead it to the boat.

Oklahoma Claims Team Title In B.A.S.S Nation Regional Bass Tournament On Lake Guntersville

[print_link]

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — Oklahoma won the team title of the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional on Lake Guntersville today after posting a combined, two-day score of 365 pounds, 4 ounces and amassing a 30-pound lead over runnerup and host state team Alabama, which weighed in 335 pounds.

The weights include the combined catches of up to 10 boaters and 10 non-boaters from each state. A total of 19 states sent teams to the Central Regional at Guntersville.

Louisiana finished third with 325-5, Ohio was fourth with 318-4 and Wisconsin claimed fifth with 300-9.

Oklahoma was helped mightily by the lone Texas resident on the team, James Biggs of Euless. Biggs caught nearly identical five-bass limits — the two heaviest individual catches of the tournament — on Wednesday and today, and he leads the individual competition with 50-9.

Biggs’ game plan was based as much on weather preparation as it was on fishing strategies, and he worked both to perfection today. He caught a five-bass limit that weighed 25-5 today, giving him a huge 16-7 lead over his nearest competitor.

Biggs said he worked his spots for all they were worth in anticipation of a fierce weather system headed for Guntersville, he wasn’t taking any chances.

“With the weather getting bad — we’re supposed to have torrential rains tonight and thunderstorms — I wanted to catch as much as I could today, so I don’t have to catch as much tomorrow,” Biggs said. “If it muddies up, it can change things enough to where they don’t bite tomorrow. That’s why I wanted to get what I could today, so maybe I only have to catch 15 pounds tomorrow.

“I wanted to have more weight in my bag than the second-place angler had yesterday. I said ‘I’m going to fish until I get at least 23 pounds (Jeremy Montgomery placed second on Wednesday with 22-8) and try to make it hard on them. With this stormy weather, sometimes those big (female bass) will bite, but you just have to play the odds, and that’s what I tried to do today.”

Biggs returned to the same tactics he used Wednesday. He fished a mix of bridge habitat and some offshore structure.

“It was more offshore today, but I checked both of them every day and whatever the fish were responding to, that’s what I rolled with,” Biggs said. “It was the same mix of baits as yesterday — a little bit of dragging (plastics), some swimbaiting and a little bit of cranking.

“It was a blessed day. They kept biting and I kept catching them.”

Howard Hartley of Patterson, La. is in second place with 34-2. Adding 15-9 to the 18-9 he caught the first day, Hartley said he was pleased to find the bass doing what he wanted them to do — advancing to the shallow bedding areas.

“Being from south Louisiana, I like to power fish and bed fish,” Hartley said. “I was able to pick up one of my better bass on a bed today, but I also think I have the staging area locked down for prespawners.

“Where I was fishing yesterday and today, they were coming up and heading to the bank; but with that stormy weather tomorrow, if they pull out, I have an idea what I need to do.”

Today, Hartley caught spawning bass on a Texas-rigged Senko, Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver and a Zoom Speed Craw. He caught the prespawn fish on a lipless crankbait and a bladed jig.

Larry Franks Jr. of Wilsonville, Ala., is in third place with 33-3. Gaining one spot from his fourth-place position on Day 1, Franks added 14-6 to his initial limit of 18-13.

“Today was a lot tougher with the boat pressure; there were a lot of people fishing the same area I was in,” Franks said.

Targeting postspawn fish in grass of varying depths, Franks used a mix of reaction baits and plastics. He stuck with two main areas and caught 25 to 30 fish.

Josh Hilton of Clarksville, Ark., is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with an 8-12 largemouth.

Justin Hymel of Norco, La., leads the co-angler division with 21-1. Alternating between pitching a Missile Baits Baby D-Stroyer and a wacky-rigged stick bait, he reported struggling most of the day. The grind was highlighted by a late-day surprise.

“I caught my last keeper with like 10 minutes left in the day,” he said. “I got the D-Stroyer hung in a laydown on a bluff. I broke that off and threw a wacky worm in there and caught my last limit fish.”

Lacson Reid of Eclectic, Ala., holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with an 8-pounder.

Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. CT at Guntersville State Park State park ramp. The weigh-in will be held at Guntersville State Park State at 2:15 p.m.

This class is made up of exceptional young fishermen who also excel in academics, conservation initiatives and community service.”

More than 400 applications nominating students in grades 10-12 were submitted from 35 states across the nation. Of these, 62 were chosen as Bassmaster All-State anglers. After reviewing tournament resumes, community service activities and recommendations from coaches and school officials, a panel of judges representing the sportfishing industry, media and conservation groups further narrowed the field to the Top 12 high school anglers in the country.

The team has been invited to participate in a special Bassmaster High School All-American Bass Tournament being held in conjunction with the 2019 Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks and Wildlife Department event, a fan-favorite festival that will be held May 2-6 on Lake Fork, Texas. Each All-American angler will be paired with an Elite Series pro for the one-day derby to be held on a nearby fishery.

Congratulations to the following student athletes for being named to the 2019 Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors. Following are short biographies of the 2019 team members, listed alphabetically. (Judges only considered tournament records for the past 12 months.)

Tyler Cory, Amherst, Wis.

Cory, a junior at Amherst High School, has earned three wins in high school tournaments across the state of Wisconsin over the past 12 months, including an FLW High School Open on the Mississippi River. He also has an impressive five Top 5 finishes to add to his extensive list of tournament success.

Cory is also the founder and current president of his high school bass fishing team. In 2018, he was selected as a member of the Bassmaster High School All-State Team, and when asked what his fishing goals for the future were, his response was “to be named a Bassmaster High School All-American.”

“Perhaps most notable about Tyler Cory is his passion for fishing,” wrote Hannah Lynch, a physical education teacher at Amherst High School. “There are few people in this world with a solid passion and drive like Tyler has for fishing. He could not be a more deserving candidate and he will work extremely hard.”

Dylan Fogarty, Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Fogarty, a junior at Cumberland Valley High School, has tallied an impressive four wins this tournament season, as well as six Top 5 finishes and three Top 20s in high school events. He has also been the angler of the year two years running for the Capital City Junior Bassmasters. Fogarty currently is serving as tournament director for his high school club and single handedly raised over $1,800 for the club to use for equipment, jerseys and tournament expenses.

Fogarty also participates in various conservation and community service efforts, including helping Conodoquinet Creek Association apply for the 2019 Pennsylvania Creek of the Year grant. He helped organize a “Hooked on Scouting” fishing event meant to help recruit new cub scouts and their families. At this event, he instructed young children in conservation practices and fishing techniques. For the past several years, he has also been a volunteer with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Kids Fishing Derby which gives a day of fishing to children who are affected by these illnesses.

“I’ve never met a person, young or old, with the passion for fishing that Dylan has,” wrote Robert Shaw, bass fishing club advisor at Cumberland Valley High School. “He was excited and prepared to start a bass fishing club at our high school. Dylan took the initiative, and on his own, created the club we have today. The club is now home to students who fish in tournaments, some who just fish for fun, and others who don’t fish much but want a safe and welcoming place to hang out with friends.”

Parker Guy, Ocilla, Ga.

A junior and member of the Irwin Bass Anglers, Guy has earned two wins over the past 12 months, including the Georgia B.A.S.S. Nation High School tournament on Lake Eufaula. Currently, Guy is ranked fifth in the angler of the year points standings for the Georgia B.A.S.S. Nation.

“As a coach, seeing Parker make the decision to focus all of his attention on fishing was a blow to our other athletic programs,” wrote Buddy Nobles, athletic director for Irwin County High School. “It is not every day you find a 6-foot, 8-inch athlete with impeccable character, God-given athletic ability and academic greatness. I sure would love to have him on the baseball mound or football field, but there is no doubt Parker’s destiny has always been on the water.”

Guy assisted the caretaker of a neighborhood lake, learning how to properly clean and care for the areas surrounding the lake, deal with beaver dam-building, creating fish habitat and maintaining the dam and other facilities. He has now taken over responsibility for monitoring and caring for the lake.

Luke Haymaker, Canal Fulton, Ohio

Haymaker has been a member of the PrimeTime Junior Bass Anglers club for the past five years, including three years in which he served as president. In the past 12 months, he claimed victory in two tournaments and finished in the Top 5 in three additional tournaments.

He was named the PrimeTime Junior Bass Angler of the Year in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018. Haymaker will be attending Kent State University in the fall, and he plans on joining the Kent State bass fishing team. He intends to study marketing in hopes of attaining a sales job in the bass fishing industry — if his original plan of becoming a Bassmaster Elite Series angler does not work out.

“With the love of the outdoors, Luke possesses a keen awareness of our need as sporting enthusiast to be conservation minded, and to protect God’s fragile ecosystem,” said Robert L. Davis, president of the North Coast Bass Anglers Association.

Brody Jacks, Benton, Ark.

A junior at Bauxite High School and president of his high school fishing team, Jacks has seen extensive tournament success over the past year. He has earned three wins, including an Arkansas High School Bassers Classic Championship, as well as four Top 5s and seven Top 20 finishes.

Jacks helped write a grant application to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. As a result, the club was awarded $1,000 from Gov. Asa Hutchinson to help purchase fishing supplies for students who would like to become part of the fishing club, but do not have the means to purchase gear.

“Besides helping to start the Bauxite High School fishing team, Brody serves in many other leadership positions,” wrote Jonathan Knight, the school’s assistant principal. “Somehow he still manages time to grow his small business, Osprey Fishing Tackle. And, in the past few months, he has been invited and accepted invitations to speak about high school fishing on the highest-rated morning show in Arkansas — KABX 103.7.”

Seth Moser, Maryville, Tenn.

A senior at Sequoyah High School, Moser has earned four wins, including a Southeast Tennessee B.A.S.S. Nation high school event on Lake Chickamauga. He also has one Top 5 finish and six Top 20 finishes to his credit.

“Academically, (Moser) is in the top 1% of the senior class and has maintained that ranking all four years,” wrote Debi Tipton, principal at Sequoyah High School. “Not only does Seth get great grades, he also participates in many extracurricular activities. He personally raised over $16,000 over the course of four years for the Sequoyah High School Bass Team as well as completed 82 hours of community service.”

Moser also excels in leadership and scholastic achievements. He has been the recipient of multiple math and scholar awards; has been invited to the National Youth Leadership Conference for Medicine and Science; has served as the FCA president, senior class treasurer and high school bass team president. His goal is to lead his future college, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, to a national bass fishing championship title.

Wyatt Pazdro, Minooka, Ill.

Pazdro, a junior at Minooka Community High School, has an impressive four tournament wins over the past 12 months, as well as four Top 5 finishes. One of his wins was in the IHSA State Championship, where he was competing for the second time.

In addition to his tournament success, Pazdro has as extensive list of conservation projects and community service to his name. He has planted fish habitat in local ponds, helped clean the shores of the Des Plains River and participated in a DNR program to help Aux Sable Creek Farms, just to name a few.

“I have always known Wyatt to be a very dedicated fisherman,” said Kevin Gummerson, a social studies teacher at Minooka Community High School. “It was evident to me that fishing has been a big part of Wyatt’s life and has motivated him to do better in the classroom.”

Wes Rollo, Natchitoches, La.

A senior on the Natchitoches Central High bass fishing team, Rollo has overcome great obstacles to earn his tournament success on the water.

At the age of 12, Rollo was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. At the time, he was an up and coming pitcher with his baseball team and a cornerback on his middle school football team.

“Within 6 weeks,” said his father, Jeff Rollo, “Wes was a skeletal 70 pounds and had little muscle mass. Chemotherapy treatments and other medications he had to take caused avascular necrosis (AVN), which can lead to bone death.”

Wes, who had been fishing since age 2 and who practiced casting into a bucket at 4 years old, wouldn’t give up on fishing.

“Sometimes I had to carry him, sometimes he would sit in a chair,” said his father. “Every chance we got, I took him in the boat. When he was not physically able to get out of bed, he watched hours upon hours of (fishing) videos. It was what got him through those nearly 3 years of treatment.”

Wes learned in 2015 that the AVN condition had improved, instead of getting worse as expected. His doctor credited the turnaround to his activity fishing and balancing as he stood in a boat, Jeff Rollo said.

Off the water, the young angler has raised money and collected donations to cook dinner and provide Christmas gifts for St. Jude’s kids and their families at the Ronald McDonald House in Memphis. It was there that he chose two children to host for a fishing weekend in Louisiana, where he will take each child and his family fishing for a weekend.

Dalton Smith, Brandon, Miss.

Smith, a junior at Northwest Rankin High School, has earned five wins in high school tournaments, seven Top 5 finishes and 5 Top 20 finishes in the 2018-2019 tournament season. He is also a four-time TBF youth state champion and a TBF youth Central Division champion.

Smith has an extensive lineup of conservation projects as well as community service activities. He organized two fundraisers for the Wounded Warriors Project, worked to educate future anglers about giant salvinia on Ross Barnett Reservoir and takes peers and younger children in the community out to help them learn about fishing as a relaxing and rewarding way to spend time.

“Whenever opportunity lends itself, Dalton gives speeches, writes papers and creates art to bring awareness and help develop an interest in fishing among his peers,” wrote Mary Jane Cox, art department chairman at Northwest Rankin High School. “This is the second year Northwest Rankin High School has had a fishing team, and Dalton has been very active in recruiting students to be a part of this growing group.”

Tucker Smith, Shoal Creek, Ala.

A junior at Briarwood Christian School, Smith has two first-place finishes on his resume, including a win against a 200-boat field at the Bassmaster High School National Championship held on Kentucky Lake out of Paris, Tenn. Smith and his fishing partner, Grayson Morris, are also a part of the high school television show on Jimmy Houston Legends (JHL.TV) called Winning Edges — a show produced by high school students to present “hands on” educational and inspirational video content.

“When Tucker was in junior high school, he suffered a traumatic ‘tib fib’ leg fracture at
football practice,” wrote Jay Mathews, director of athletics and the bass fishing coach at Briarwood Christian School. “He was in a wheelchair for quite some time. Tucker decided to take this setback as a comeback and even fished from his wheelchair! He never complained throughout his recovery.”

Off the water, Smith has worked for King’s Home Kampfire for the King event and has been a big part of managing a private lake in Louisville, Ala., for a number of years. This year, they will be adding fish habitat in addition to the baitfish stocked in 2018.

Jackson Swisher, Lake City, Fla.

Swisher, a junior at Columbia High School, has excelled both on and off the water in his high school career. In the past 12 months alone, Swisher has earned three first-place finishes, seven Top 5 finishes and six Top 20 finishes. He’s currently in first place for the Florida B.A.S.S. Nation Southern Series points standings.

When he’s not fishing competitively, Swisher volunteers at fundraising tournaments on the Suwannee River, including the Breast Cancer Awareness Association tournament and the Puzzle Pieces of North Florida Autism tournament. He also teaches pitching, casting and knot-tying skills to first-time anglers at the National Wild Turkey Federation Take A Kid Fishing Day.

“My three daughters (age 6, 7 and 9) expressed to me they wanted to learn about fishing,” wrote Thomas Hosford, principal at Columbia High School. “I spoke to Jackson … and he immediately asked when he could take them fishing. Over the next week, Jackson spent a couple of afternoons fishing with them at a nearby pond. I was amazed at his patience with them. You could see his passion for showing others, especially children, how to fish.

“When I think of an All-American, I think of someone who not only excels in his or her sport, but also in all walks of life. Jackson is the epitome of an All-American.”

James Willoughby, Gulfport, Miss.

With an outstanding five tournament wins over the past 12 months, Willoughby has demonstrated the fishing ability needed to qualify as a Bassmaster High School All-American. In addition to those five wins, he has also logged seven Top 5 finishes and 8 Top 20 finishes.

Willoughby organized the first fishing team at his high school and has been actively involved ever since. He is also very dedicated to his schoolwork and has not missed a day of school in the past four years. He has volunteered with special needs children, giving them the chance to be on the water and catch fish.

“James is an example of a good citizen who is committed to his role as a student, teammate and community member,” said Caitlin Holley, an english teacher at West Harrison High School. “He humbly demonstrates leadership skills daily, and his classmates are encouraged by his positive attitude and behavior.”

Prespawn Bass Put Biggs In The Lead At Guntersville B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional

Texas angler James Biggs of Team Oklahoma took the lead on the first day of the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional held on Lake Guntersville out of Guntersville, Ala. Biggs brought 25 pounds, 4 ounces to the scales at Wednesday’s weigh-in.

Prespawn Bass Put Biggs In The Lead At Guntersville B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional

[print_link]

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — James Biggs of Euless, Texas, effectively employed an intercept strategy to catch a huge five-bass limit that weighed 25 pounds, 4 ounces for the opening-round lead at the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional on Lake Guntersville.

With a 2-pound, 12-ounce margin over second place, the Texas boater built his game plan around seasonal patterns. Anglers reported finding fish in all three stages of the spawn, but Biggs believed his best opportunity would be found with the prespawn fish.

“I just found where they’re transitioning,” Biggs said. “We have a full moon coming and they’re heading to the banks. I found that stopping spot pretty close to where they’re heading.

“I fished the renowned Guntersville bridges, which make funneling points. These are just common-sense spots where the fish will stop on the way in, and stop on the way out.”

Biggs said he spent most of his time fishing bridge pilings and bottom structure in the deeper sections. Although he caught fish throughout different parts of the day, Biggs experienced a midday upturn.

“I think that was because (the TVA) started running some current,” he said.

Mobility, he said, was the key to his success. He knew the fish would be feeding heavily, so checking multiple spots proved essential.

“The morning bite wasn’t very good; I sat on one area for a while and caught a couple, but nothing great,” he said. “I made a move and was able to cull those fish out.

“I just started spot hopping the same type of stuff. It was more of a pattern than a location because it worked in multiple places.

True to the prespawn pattern, Biggs caught his fish on a mix of presentations. Swimbaits produced some of his bigger bites, but slowly dragging plastics along the bottom also added to his limit.

“We’re at Guntersville in April — fish your strength,” he said of the big lake’s famous spring bonanza. “This lake is so full of fish, you can catch them a bunch of different ways.”

Jeremy Montgomery of Overland Park, Kan., is in second place with 22-8. Anchoring his bag was a 6-5 and another kicker around 6. Three more in the 3-pound range bespoke a day of consistency.

Montgomery said he’s targeting grassy humps rising from about 7 to 8 feet of water down to 4 feet. His fish are either right on top of the hump or they’re on the edge of the grass.

“They’re coming to me, for sure,” Montgomery said of his postspawn staging areas. “I only hit three of the spots I found in practice, so I have a couple more that I left alone today. I got a limit really early, culled one at noon and then kind of laid off of them.”

Montgomery caught his fish on Senkos Texas rigged with a 1/8-ounce bullet weight, which helped the bait push through the grass. Popping the worm out of grass often triggered reaction bites.

Sawyer McMurphy of Long Beach, Miss., finished the first day in third place with 19-0. He was mostly targeting prespawn and postspawn fish, but late morning offered an opportunity to catch a bedded fish.

“I saw the bed in about 3 feet of water but I didn’t actually see the fish,” he said. “I flipped a beaver in there and she attacked the bait on the first cast.”

Josh Hilton of Clarksville, Ark., is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 8-12.

Mike Szczechowski of Strafford, Mo., leads the nonboater division with 15-4. Paired with Biggs, he also benefited from the staging popularity of Guntersville bridges.

“I caught fish on the pilings and the points going underneath them,” Szczechowski said. “It was a mix of reaction baits and slower baits. Sometimes the bite was really fast, and sometimes it was really slow. We just did what we had to do to get bit, and reacted to where we fished.”

Szczechowski’s bag included a 6-5 kicker. He caught that one mid-morning.

Paul Huse of Omaha, Neb., holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with a 6-15.

Thursday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. CT at the Guntersville State Park ramp. The weigh-in will be held at the same location at 2:15 p.m.

The Charge Advantage – With Chris Lane

0

[print_link]

“The CHARGE takes all the energy that used to get wasted and puts it back into the boat,” said Power-Pole ambassador Chris Lane. “It’s so simple to monitor all the battery levels at all times with the C-Monster app. If I need to juice the batteries back up, I run just a bit and I’m full up to max charge again. It gives me total peace of mind when I’m on the water.”

The CHARGE operates as a bi-directional marine battery charging and power-management built to divert power around to electronics where it’s needed most, while keeping batteries continually charged and monitored. Settings can easily be controlled through the C-Monster app on any smartphone or Gateway enabled device.

“I check my app throughout the day and make decisions based on the data it provides to regulate power where I need it. If I want to make a 20- to 30-minute move away, I can run wide open and not worry about conserving battery juice,” Lane states. “My whole day out, I can fish without worrying whether I’m too far away from home or draining too much power. Plus, the unit only weighs 7 pounds, so that takes major weight off the back of the boat versus having to carry extra batteries.”

With a fully integrated system to ensure anglers have the ultimate control over their power management, CHARGEusers can run and fish with confidence and dependability.
“It’s real simple. The CHARGE gives me peace of mind whether fun fishing or tournament fishing,” Lane adds. “Knowing I am in control over my boat’s power and energy regulation absolutely allows me the ability to fish faster, harder, longer and stronger.”
