Top 10 Random Thoughts About the Spring SpawnBy: Robert Hudson

Top 10 Random Thoughts
About the Spring Spawn
By: Robert Hudson

Spring fishing is here. Get out the sunscreen and put on those high dollar sunglasses! Fish are heading to shallow water to spawn. In this article, I will do my best to avoid the annual “how to catch spawning bass” information. Instead, I want to point out what may be well known, but still important aspects of tournament bass fishing during the spawn.
Here are a few random facts about fishing the spawn that you need to know:

1. Make sure those expensive sunglasses are secured with an around the neck lanyard. A good pair of sunglasses is probably the most important tool during this season. They are necessary to be able to see the fish on the beds, but they are useless at the bottom of the lake. So secure them well.

2. Leg stretches before and during the day can help with the fatigue you may feel. Stretching will help to avoid those leg cramps that often develop from those unusual postures.

3. Don’t let the fishing pros and the bait companies confuse you. If your favorite lure has been catching bass off the bed for years, then it will still work today. It is always fun to try new baits on bedding bass, but fish the lure that you are comfortable with and that you feel strongly about!!

4. If you don’t have them by now, Power Poles or Talons are must-haves in today’s spawn fishing. Holding your position while casting to a spawning fish is vital. These excellent tools will help you to stay put and not drift away from or over the bed.

5. Two-pound fish are not worth your time in most tournaments. With the weights climbing every week, you need to use your time wisely. Spawn fish can be BIG fish, not two-pounders. Keep looking!!

6. In most instances, a bass on its bed will look smaller than what it actually will be. Be sure to look for fish that are bigger than what you think might weigh two pounds.

7. When you see a bass on the bed flaring its gills, it is ready to be caught! That familiar puffing of the gills and smacking of the lips is a sure sign that he is agitated and ready to bite.

8. There really is no magic temperature for a lake bass to start spawning. We always hear 60 degrees, but keep your eyes open starting at 57 degrees on our Virginia lakes and rivers.

9. Tournament guys, make sure when using way-points on your electronics to keep the 5 biggest fish in the order you plan on fishing for them. Sometimes having those way-points in order will keep you from allowing a competitor to beat you to one of your biggest fish. Sometimes our memories fail us, so use those electronics!

10. Don’t be afraid to jump on a bedding fish when you see another angler give up on it. What you are doing is probably different and may put the fish in the boat quickly since it has already been irritated.

Keep these random facts about the spawn in mind as you search for that BIG one! Please release those bass quickly if you’re not in a tournament. They will return to the bed and may be the ones that have a successful class of fish for the future!!

COSTA FLW SERIES HEADS TO SANTEE COOPER LAKES FOR TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

COSTA FLW SERIES HEADS TO SANTEE COOPER LAKES FOR TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

[print_link]

SUMMERTON, S.C. (April 17, 2019) – The top bass anglers from around the region are set to fish Santee Cooper Lakes April 25-27 for the Costa Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Series Southeastern Division finale on Santee Cooper Lakes presented by Power-Pole. Hosted by the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce, the three-day tournament will feature more than 330 of the best regional bass-fishing pros and co-anglers casting for a top prize package of up to $94,000, including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard in the pro division.

“This tournament is going to be centered around the spawn,” said FLW Tour pro Bryan Thrift, of Shelby, North Carolina, the 2018 Costa FLW Series Southeastern Angler of the Year (AOY) who finished in sixth place when the circuit visited the fishery in April 2018. “It’s probably going to be the tail-end of the spawn – there’ll be some fry-guarders up. Trees will definitely be a big player this year, just like last year.

“I think there’s going to be a lot of wacky-rigged worms being used, like a 5-inch [Damiki] Stinger – things like that,” Thrift continued. “There won’t be a boat in the field that doesn’t have a wacky-rigged worm lying on the deck.”

For any postspawn bass that are present, Thrift said wacky-rigged worms will be a good bet as well.

“Anglers will mainly be focusing on cypress trees for postspawn bass,” said Thrift. “You can also throw spinnerbaits, or flip them with a Texas-rigged soft-plastic and a jig – you can kind of pick your poison this time of year. Whatever you like to do, you should be able to find some fish doing it and figure out how to catch them.”

Thrift went on to say that both lakes will likely be favored by competitors, as each have the potential to kick out big weights. He said that a three-day cumulative catch ranging from 71 to 75 pounds should be enough to take home top honors.

“I think there’s potential for both lakes to be productive – the winning fish could come from anywhere on either lake,” said Thrift. “You really can’t rule anything out. That’s the good thing about Santee – its two lakes and it’s pretty big, but there’s big fish everywhere.”

Anglers will take off from John C. Land III Landing located at 4404 Greenall Road in Summerton at 6:30 a.m. EDT each day of competition. Weigh-ins each day will also be held at the landing beginning at 2:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

In Costa FLW Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event. At Santee Cooper Lakes, pros will fish for a top prize of up to $94,000 including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup qualified. Co-anglers will cast for a brand new Ranger Z175 boat with a 115-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard, and $5,000 if Ranger Cup qualified.

The Costa FLW Series consists of five U.S. divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western – along with the International division. Each U.S. division consists of three regular-season tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to compete in the season-ending Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2019 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 on Lake Cumberland in Burnside, Kentucky.

Texas Angler Wins ‘Fish With Chris And Trait Zaldain’ Sweepstakes

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — When he was notified that he had won the grand prize in the “Fish with Chris and Trait Zaldain” sweepstakes, Kert May of Willis, Texas, couldn’t believe the good news — literally.

“I was skeptical when I opened up the email saying I had won,” he said. “The notification arrived on April 1 — April Fools’ Day. I have friends who would try to pull a trick like that on me.”

Finally, reality sank in, and May — a lifelong angler and B.A.S.S. member since longer ago than he can remember — embraced the fact that he had just won a fishing trip with Bassmaster Elite Series star Chris Zaldain and his wife, Trait, who is a professional angler competing on the Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens Series.

May’s name was drawn from more than 710,000 entries in the sweepstakes.

B.A.S.S. will fly May to upstate New York, where he will fish with the Zaldains on the St. Lawrence River in August, immediately following the Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River out of Waddington, N.Y. He also receives three nights lodging, a rental car and $500 spending money.

In addition to the fishing trip, May’s grand prize includes a Skeeter ZX190 bass boat with Yamaha VF150LA outboard, rigged with two Humminbird Helix 10 depthfinder/GPS units and other accessories. He also will receive assorted fishing gear from Sportsman Warehouse and prize packages from Seaguar Fishing Line, Trokar, Santone Lures and Megabass.

A director with MBA Energy & Industrial, May’s office is just 10 miles from Lake Conroe, site of the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. He fishes the lake every chance he gets, and he’s excited about getting out on the lake in his new Skeeter soon.

The winner of the next B.A.S.S. sweepstakes will receive a similar prize package, including an expenses-paid trip with Bassmaster Elite Series standout Hunter Shryock. The contest will conclude July 31, and it will award one lucky bass fishing fan $48,000 in prizes, including a new Phoenix 618 Pro XP bass boat with Mercury 150L Pro XS engine.

Other prizes include a Lowrance HDS LIVE 7 fishfinder with Active Imaging 3-in-1; a Rigid Industries Boat Deck Light Kit + Backup kit; Power-Pole $500 gift certificate plus gear; assorted tackle from Abu Garcia, Berkley, and SiderWire; a Field & Stream $500 gift card; Keel shield prize pack; and Bob’s Machine trolling motor upgrade package and apparel.

APEX’S JOYCE WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE OPENER ON KERR LAKE

APEX’S JOYCE WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE OPENER ON KERR LAKE

Drakes Branch’s Toombs Wins Co-angler Division

HENDERSON, N.C. (April 15, 2019) – Boater Keith Joyce of Apex, North Carolina, caught five bass Saturday weighing 19 pounds, 5 ounces, to win the 2019 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Piedmont division tournament on Kerr Lake. Joyce earned $7,254 for his victory.

“I was just looking for isolated buck bushes in the back of spawning pockets as far as I could go,” said Joyce, who earned his first career win in BFL competition. “I think I caught 10 keepers total, fishing a shakey-head (rig) all day long. I did have one big fish that I weighed in that came on a buzzbait, but the rest of my keepers were on the shakey-head.”

Joyce said that he fished in the Nutbush area with a Hot Shot Lures Shakey-Head rig with a green-pumpkin KVD Fat Baby Finesse Worm and a white Hot Shot Lures buzzbait.

“It didn’t start off well – I had about 40 fish marked coming into the event, but we had bad thunderstorms and a lot of the creeks had mudslides running into them. So I just went back to the area that I had found the most fish in during practice, put the trolling motor down and just started fishing.”

.The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Keith Joyce, Apex, N.C., five bass, 19-5, $5,254 + $2,000 Ranger Cup

2nd:         Danny Haire, Yadkinville, N.C., five bass, 17-12, $2,052

4th:          Vincent Payne, Mechanicsville, Va., five bass, 14-7, $625

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 17-19 BFL Regional Championship on the Potomac River in Marbury, Maryland. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard.

The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2019 BFL All-American will be held May 30-June 1 at the Potomac River in Marbury, Maryland, and is hosted by the Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism and the Commissioners of Charles County. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.
