4 Baits That Dominated The 2019 Bassmaster Classic – MTB

4 Baits That Dominated The 2019 Bassmaster Classic

[print_link]

Storm Arashi Vibe

Ott Defoe won $300,000 at the 2019 Bassmaster Classic and majority of his tournament winning fish came on the Storm Arashi Vibe. Ott targeted shallow water while picking apart marinas, eddies, and rocky shorelines with this versatile crankbait. Keeping his boat parallel and tight to the shoreline allowed him to cover water while subtly putting off the action of a fleeing crawfish. Knowing that fish were keyed in on crayfish, Ott opted for the rusty craw pattern Arashi which he tweaked using a black sharpie.

Z-Man Chatterbait Jackhammer

While the Z-Man Jackhammer is known for draining anglers wallets, the Jackhammer is undoubtedly the preferred bladed jig among touring pros. Tournament waters were both high and muddy when compared to normal March conditions which resulted in shallow water patterns allowing to really shine. Anglers beating the bank quickly picked up their bladed jigs and started pounding fish.

The well thought out design from the Jackhammer helps it swim effortlessly through the water without rolling or spinning. Water displacement is key in muddy water and the jackhammer pushes H20 like no other.

Rapala DT Series

If you pick up a bait that is stamped with the Rapala name, feel confident that it’s going to catch fish. The Rapala DT Series is no different and it was proven throughout the weekend when Rapala pros dominated the derby. The DT series gets down to the desired depth quickly while putting off a wobbling action that is unmatched. From crankin’ shallow water cover to targeting deep offshore shoals, the Rapala DT Series is the bait for the job.

Fish were shallow and related to common cover like rocks, docks, shale, and brush. Mike Iaconelli, Jacob Wheeler and tournament champion Ott Defoe all relied on a crayfish patterned DT Crankbait to bring in a bag each afternoon.

Big Swimbaits

While this wasn’t an established pattern over the weekend among other anglers – California native Chris Zaldain swung for the fences all weekend using big swimbaits.

Most of us know that bass eat shad but, some anglers fail to realize how big of a shad some bass will actually eat. Chris Zaldain helped prove the ”Big Baits = Big Fish” theory this weekend by filling his daily limits using large shad style baits.

The Tennessee River is loaded with oily rich shad that bass gorge on whenever given the chance. Shad are nutrient dense and easy for bass to consume which is part of the reason lunkers grow so large in these parts. Chris’ took advantage of this bite by winding big, California style swimbaits mimicking the patterns of roaming shad littering the Tennessee River system.

BOLT LOCK OFFERS THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY FOR ANYONE WHO TOWS

[print_link]

MILWAUKEE – Award-winning technology specifically designed to protect valuables is the must-have tool for kayakers, boaters, racers, off-road adventurers and anyone who tows. The patented “Breakthrough One-Key Lock Technology” of BOLT Locks is a convenient security option for protecting trailers, hitches, boats, ladders, kayaks and more, all while reducing key clutter on a keychain.

BOLT Locks use specially crafted tumblers to memorize a vehicle’s ignition key the first time it is inserted into the lock. One complete turn of the key moves the tumblers to fit that one specific key, resulting in a uniquely programmed lock. The days of having to use different keys for each lock are gone.

“BOLT Locks are truly unique in that they are an incredibly useful solution to reducing key clutter because just the ignition key is used for any BOLT lock. The convenient security that BOLT offers is unparalleled. Anyone that tows will find our One-Key Lock Technology both innovative and practical,” said Jason Buckles, Sales Account Manager for BOLT Lock.

The stainless steel pin of the Coupler Pin Lock fits couplers from 1/2-inch to 3 3/8-inches in 1/8-inch increments, providing a snug fit. BOLT’s coupler pin lock secures the locking lever from any movement and serves dual purposes: locking a trailer ball when hitched to a vehicle or making the coupler unusable when off of the vehicle. When the trailer is not hitched to a vehicle, the coupler pin lock secures the locking lever so that it cannot be moved in order for a new vehicle to attach a ball mount to the trailer.

The BOLT Receiver Lock is the other dual purpose lock for towing. Designed to lock the ball mount receiver onto the hitch of the vehicle, the Receiver Lock comes in two sizes: 1/2-inch and 5/8-inches. BOLT Locks’ 1/2-inch Receiver Lock fits Class 1 and 2 hitches while the 5/8-inch Receiver Lock fits Class 3, 4 and 5 hitches. The receiver locks work by locking the ball mount to the receiver. When the ball mount is attached to the receiver hitch of the vehicle, the receiver lock is inserted and locked into place. This specific lock can be used whether or not a trailer is hitched to the vehicle. The receiver lock prevents the ball mount from being stolen off of the vehicle as well as preventing the trailer itself being stolen with the ball mount receiver.

Market demand for a lock to protect unattended trailers led to the design and creation of the company’s new hardened steel, red powder-coated Off-Vehicle Coupler Lock. Featuring bold red BOLT coloring, the robust device is a visible theft deterrent which is placed on the trailer’s coupler and locked to prevent being secured to another vehicle.

BOLT also offers cable locks and padlocks. The cable lock can secure kayaks to a roof rack of a vehicle, bikes to the back of a vehicle, generators to trailers, spare tires under the bed of the truck and any other item which needs to be protected during transport or storage. The multipurpose cable lock features a six foot long 1/4-inch black vinyl coated coiled cable.

BOLT Locks’ padlock can also be used in multiple ways: to lock a cargo trailer door, secure a storage shed, lock a toolbox or tackle box and more. No matter what needs secured, BOLT provides a convenient lock that opens with the vehicle’s ignition key in order to protect it.

STRATTEC Security Corporation, the parent company of BOLT Lock, has been in the industry of making locks and keys for original equipment vehicle manufacturers for 100 years. Creating the proprietary ignition keys, locks and related access control products for Ford, GM and Chrysler led the company to introduce the BOLT Lock product line to the aftermarket industry about six years ago. With a vast knowledge base in vehicle security as well as access to ignition keys, it’s not much wonder BOLT technology has been awarded Popular Mechanics Editor’s Choice Award and honored with the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Global Media Award numerous times.

Arashi® Vibe and DT-4, Help DeFoe Win Hometown Bassmaster Classic

[print_link]

One day last week, Ott DeFoe’s daughter, Lizzie, used chalk to write this on the driveway in front of the family’s Knoxville home: “The 2019 Bassmaster Classic Champion Lives Here.” Over three days of competition, her daddy then used Storm®, Rapala® and VMC® tackle to make that prediction come true.

Fishing on Fort Loudoun Lake, located just a short drive from his driveway, DeFoe caught three 5-fish limits weighing a combined 49 pounds, 3 ounces to win the 2019 Bassmaster Classic. The Rapala Pro hoisted the trophy and made a victory lap with Lizzie and the rest of his family in front of roaring hometown fans packed to the rafters in Thompson-Boling Arena, home of the University of Tennessee men’s and women’s basketball teams.

DeFoe’s victory, however, was not a layup. On day 2 of the three-day event, he lost a day-1 lead by turning in the bass fishing equivalent of an air-ball. After catching 20 pounds on Friday, he caught a disappointing 10 pounds, 5 ounces on Saturday to slip to 4th place, 2 pounds, 1 ounce behind the day 2 leader, fellow Rapala Pro Jacob Wheeler.

“I was so mad yesterday,” DeFoe said Sunday on the weigh-in stage. “After that first day, I was on top of the world, but God will humble you sometimes, exactly when you need it. And that’s what it took yesterday. If I would have had another pretty good day [yesterday], I wouldn’t have adjusted. I wouldn’t have just went fishin’ like I did today — listened to my gut. I know I wouldn’t be in this position right now.

“So you’ve got to listen to what God’s tellin’ ya,” DeFoe said further. “I needed a bad day yesterday and I survived that with 10 pounds. I needed to just get through that day.”DeFoe was the odds-on favorite to win the Classic in his hometown. Not only has he won three Bassmaster Opens on nearby Douglas Lake in recent years, in his youth he won and placed high in numerous tournaments on both Fort Loudoun and Tellico, an adjoining lake also in play for the Classic.

“It’s a place that shaped me as angler, I fished down here so much,” DeFoe said in a press conference following his crowning as the reigning Bassmaster champion.

“Growing up, I spent more time and won more money on Fort Loudon/Tellico than I did all the other lakes around here,” DeFoe said in a pre-tournament interview. “Those two were always my bread-and-butter places. Cherokee and Douglas I would do OK on, but Fort Loudon and Tellico were always the places that I liked the best. For whatever reason, they suited my style better than some of the others.”

Several of DeFoe’s fellow Team Rapala pros fared well in the Classic as well. Wheeler, the day 2 leader, was runner-up and Michael Iaconelli finished 4th. Brandon Palaniuk placed 10th and Seth Feider finished 15th. The field for the tournament, often called “The Super Bowl of Bass Fishing” comprised 52 of the best bass anglers in the world.

Vibes and VMC® Hybrid Trebles
On the tournament’s first day, four bass in DeFoe’s 20-pound limit came on a Storm Arashi Vibe lipless crankbait. Among those was a 6-pounder that was the biggest bass caught that day by any competitor.

On Saturday and Sunday, DeFoe caught a combined three more of his weigh-in fish on a Vibe. The 4-pound, 7 ounce bass he caught Sunday on a Vibe allowed him to cull a smaller fish, solidifying his win.

Lipless crankbaits like the Vibe often excel in the spring, when bass are first pulling up from deeper water and moving close to shallow spawning areas. To make his Rusty Craw-pattern Vibe more visible in Fort Loudon’s stained water, DeFoe customized its appearance with red, orange and black Sharpie markers.

“I made it a little prettier than it comes out of the package,” DeFoe joked.

Vibes start swimming at slower speeds than do other lipless crankbaits. They fall slower too, allowing you to fish them in shallower water at a slower speed. Featuring a soft-knock rattle, Vibes emit a unique single-cadence, low-pitch sound that attracts attention without alarming tentative fish.

To give himself an even bigger advantage, DeFoe replaced the VMC stock trebles with No. 2 VMC Hybrid Treble Shorts, which he helped design a couple years ago. The innovative trebles combine the strength of O’Shaughnessy hooks with the hooking percentage of Round Bend trebles.

While the O’Shaugnessy shape allows greater strength with a smaller-diameter wire – which improves landing percentage – it forms a narrower gap than most freshwater anglers prefer. The gap on Round Bend hooks, however, is much wider, “so you definitely get the best hooking rate,” DeFoe said.

4-pounder on a Rapala® DT-4
One of the bigger bass DeFoe caught – a 4-pounder – came Friday on a Rapala DT-4 crankbait in the Dark Brown Crawdad color pattern. “DT” stands for “dives to.” Built of balsa wood, Rapala’s signature material, a DT-4 will get down to its maximum depth of four feet sooner than – and thus stay in the strike zone longer than – any other shallow-running crankbait on the market.

The way a DT’s balsa body wobbles while swimming and digging its bill into the bottom makes it a perfect tool for triggering bites from shallow, early-season bass on waterbodies with little to no vegetation, like Fort Loudon and Tellico. Swimming with a side-to-side action only balsa baits can achieve, DT’s can back out of shallow cover better than copycat crankbaits, floating up and minimizing snags.

As he did on his Vibes, DeFoe replaced the hooks on his DT-4’s as they dulled with VMC Hybrid Treble Shorts.

Those Hybrids are great for guys who have a lot riding on getting every fish that bites into the boat,” DeFoe said.Especially for a guy fishing a comeback bid to win a Bassmaster Classic in his hometown.

Congratulations Ott!
