APPLING, Ga. (March 4, 2019) – Boater Adam Beckum of Martinez, Georgia, brought five bass to the scale Saturday weighing 22 pounds, 10 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Savannah River Division tournament on Clarks Hill Lake. Beckum pocketed $4,011 for his efforts.

“I fished secondary points, catching fish that were moving in – coming from the deep to the shallows,” said Beckum, who earned his second career victory in BFL competition – first as a boater. “I probably fished 10 or 15 areas, including some in the Little River, Chigoe Creek and Keg Creek. I sat in 15 feet of water and threw up into 8 or 10 feet. I’d hit a couple of spots in each creek and then work my back through.”

Beckum said he used a black and blue-colored Ketch-Her Lures jig with a green-pumpkin Zoom Super Chunk trailer to catch his fish, adding that he caught nine keepers during the tournament.

“Most of my bites came after 10 (a.m.). I got bit at some spots in the afternoon that didn’t produce for me in the morning.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Adam Beckum, Martinez, Ga., five bass, 22-10, $4,011

Nacogdoches’ Moore Wins Co-angler Title

BROOKELAND, Texas (March 4, 2019) – Boater Jeremy Knepper of Montgomery, Texas, brought five bass to the scale Saturday weighing 27 pounds, 9 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Cowboy Division tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Knepper took home $5,261 for his efforts.

Knepper said he caught his fish flipping bushes along an approximately 200-yard stretch near Veach Basin. He said he’d had some success at the area in practice, and decided to return to it during the event.

“The stretch had some bushes with deep water nearby. During practice, I had only gotten five bites – including a 6-pounder – and lost a good one at the boat,” said Knepper, who logged his first win in FLW competition. “It was one of those deals where I knew that if I could get five bites during the tournament, they’d be the right ones, but I wasn’t sure that I could get those five bites.”

Knepper said he arrived at the area first thing in the morning and within about 10 minutes, put a 9-pounder in the boat.

“I flipped into a bush, felt a hard tug and boat-flipped it. That one calmed me down. With the water dropping and the weather changing like it is, I wasn’t sure that the pattern was going to hold. But that one told me they were there,” said Knepper. “About 10 or 15 minutes later I caught one of my 5-pounders. I looked at the clock and saw it was about 8:15 (a.m.) and I knew I was way ahead of schedule.”

Knepper said he got a couple more bites, but could tell he had hit a mid-morning lull, so he decided to let the area rest.

“I didn’t want to go back through – I wanted to let it sit. You had to let the stretch rest and reload,” said Knepper. “I spent about two hours running the bank looking for similar water before coming back to the stretch. Then I got a 6-pounder and then a 5-pounder toward the end of it. With four fish in the boat, I let it rest again, and caught my fifth around 2 (p.m.).”

The Texas boater said he used one bait to catch his fish – a ½-ounce, Texas-rigged, Hematoma-colored Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver on an Owner Jungle flipping hook.

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Jeremy Knepper, Montgomery, Texas, five bass, 27-9, $5,261

2nd:         Brandon Thrash, Downsville, La., five bass, 24-13, $2,931

3rd:          Bryan Trahan, Orange, Texas, five bass, 20-1, $2,573

4th:          Randy Deaver, Blanchard, La., five bass, 19-14, $1,428

5th:          Kevin Jeane, Natchitoches, La., five bass, 19-6, $1,052

6th:          Cade Rudiger, Mansfield, Texas, five bass, 19-1, $965

7th:          Ken Smith, Dallas, Texas, five bass, 18-14, $977

8th:          Matthew Armand, Hessmer, La., five bass, 18-13, $789

The tournament was hosted by the Jasper County Development District.

Knoxville’s Coker Takes Co-angler Title

ROCKWOOD, Tenn. (March 4, 2019) – Boater Jeffrey Mahaffey of Bristol, Tennessee, brought five bass to the scale Saturday weighing 20 pounds, 10 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Volunteer Division opener on Watts Bar Lake presented by Navionics. Mahaffey earned $3,164 for his catch.

“I targeted isolated laydowns mid-lake. The area near takeoff at Tom Fuller Park was especially productive for me – I caught two over 5 pounds there,” said Mahaffey, who earned his first career win in FLW competition. “I primarily ran shallow cover off the bank, but capitalized on the deeper stuff that was maybe 50 to 75 yards off of the bank, if I saw it. I probably hit around 25 pockets, but targeted just a handful of trees – many only had one tree in them.”

Mahaffey said he leaned on two custom baits from Jerry’s Bait Shop in Rockwood to put together his limit – a ½-ounce and a ¾-ounce double-willow spinnerbait with white and blue coloring, each with a chartreuse Zoom Straight Tail Worm trailer.

“The shallower bites came from 6 to 8 feet down. You had to fish the ends of the trees – when the spinnerbait kind of came out of the tree and fell off the end, that’s when you’d get a bite,” said Mahaffey. “The deeper cover off the bank behind me was in 8 to 10 feet of water. That’s when I’d switch to the ¾-ounce [spinnerbait] and really let it sink down and get to the base.”

Mahaffey said he ended up catching 10 keepers throughout the day.

“Both of these patterns were fishing extremely slow – you really had to slow roll the spinnerbaits to get a bite,” said Mahaffey.

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Jeffrey Mahaffey, Bristol, Tenn., five bass, 20-10, $3,164

2nd:         Jonathan Bowling, Harriman, Tenn., five bass, 17-10, $1,782

3rd:          Nick Huff, Bean Station, Tenn., five bass, 17-7, $1,154

4th:          Matt Linton, Kingston, Tenn., five bass, 17-4, $738

5th:          Jason Sosebee, Knoxville, Tenn., five bass, 17-3, $633

6th:          Brad Mattie, Oak Ridge, Tenn., five bass, 17-2, $580

7th:          Chase Henley, Kingston, Tenn., five bass, 16-14, $527

8th:          Jeff Knight, Cleveland, Tenn., five bass, 16-10, $855

9th:          Tim Wyatt, Crossville, Tenn., five bass, 16-8, $422

CODY MEYER: Ready to Roll in Raleigh – MLF

Cody Meyer with a 6-pounder he caught on Lake Conroe during the MLF Bass Pro Tour Stage Two.

We’re two stages into the first-ever Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour, and it’s been really cool for me to see how much this tour has developed in such a short time.

I’ll admit that it’s been a little tough for me so far this season (not because of the format, but the fishing in general). I love the style and the format, but catching fish was really a challenge for me in the first two stages on the Kissimmee Chain and Lake Conroe (I finished 24th and 31st in my Elimination Rounds).

I’m hoping that can change when we get to Raleigh, North Carolina for Stage Three.

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (March 4, 2019) – The University of North Alabama duo of Houston Calvert of Hayden, Alabama, and Justin Lane of Florence, Alabama, won the YETI FLW College Fishing event on Lake Guntersville presented by Bass Pro Shops Friday with a five-bass limit weighing 29 pounds, 3 ounces. The victory earned the Lion’s bass club $2,400 and a slot in the 2020 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

“We had three or four days of sunshine where it was 60 to 72 degrees, and I think a big wave was pushing up,” said Calvert, a senior majoring in marketing. “As you can tell, everybody found that. That’s the biggest weights I’ve seen in a college tournament. I really wanted it to be 30 pounds. I really thought we had 30. It was close, but maybe another time.”

“It’s just left me speechless, to be honest with you,” added Lane, a junior business management major. “It was one of those days you dream about. It’s just incredible that it happened in a tournament for us. That’s the biggest bag I’ve ever caught in my life.”

The warm spell Calvert described sort of fizzled by the tournament as a cold front brought lower temps and rain, which the team thinks caused some of the fish that were headed for the bank in practice to slide back out into hydrilla beds.

That’s where the Lions found their winning fish, targeting a single pocket all day long.

“We started out throwing a ChatterBait in grass in 6 to 8 feet,” Calvert said. “We probably had, I want to say, 12 pounds within 30 to 45 minutes of blast off. It rained there for two to three hours, and we just moved up on the bank with it raining. He [Lane] threw a Zoom Ultravibe Speed Worm, and I threw the NetBait Big Bopper. We were swimming them around hydrilla.”

The shallower shift mostly produced smaller bass due to all the bucks up on the bank, so once the rain quit, Lane and Calvert slid back out. Lane added a solid 4-plus keeper with a Rat-L-Trap, and gradually the team chipped away at a nice limit.

What sealed the deal was a pair of kickers late in the afternoon that left Calvert and Lane with a limit comprised of one keeper close to 7 pounds, three 6-pounders and one about 4.

“We saw some shad running in the grass,” Calvert recalled. “We sat down and cut off our green pumpkin and black and blue ChatterBaits and tied on a white ChatterBait with a Keitech FAT on the back of it. Once we changed to white, right before weigh-in we culled two – big time. I know we culled at 2:15, and once we made that last cull we put everything up and went to the ramp.

“I think if the weather was going to be warm next week they would be spawning,” Calvert went on to say. “They want to spawn so bad. There are a lot of bucks up shallow. We probably caught, I would say, 30 fish. Probably 20 of those were 2-pounders. The other 10 were anywhere from 3 to 6 pounds. Pretty much everybody I talked to caught 30 to 40 fish.”
