‘Monkey’ Business

Fishing glove authority Tim Mossberg recounts company’s successful start

Destin, FL (February 25, 2019) – Instinct. That innate, impossible-to-quantify impulse leading people toward a positive outcome. The world’s great anglers all share it in common: a gift for listening to that little inner voice that leads you to schools of biting fish.

Interestingly, the same talent applies to business—a hunch for a new product that creates demand where it didn’t previously exist. Tim Mossberg, owner and founder of Fish Monkey Gloves didn’t invent the concept of angling handwear. But Mossberg’s first two years of operation have proved his instincts right on the money; the small fishing-focused company has already expanded to international distribution, expanding to over 600 dealers in 16 countries.

Fish Monkey Glove founder and owner Tim Mossberg listens to the ideas of elite anglers.

“We learned fast there’s a real thirst for high-grade fishing gloves out there,” says Mossberg, who combined his lifelong passion for fishing with his longtime profession — the design and craft of premium apparel.

An industry insider with hard-won experience in sales, sourcing and distribution, Mossberg founded his first apparel company over 25 years ago. (He also launched a well-known fishing apparel brand.) Through it all, fishing remained his principle passion.

“I’ve been an angler since age 5 or 6,” he recalls. “Years later, my friend Gary Carter introduced me to bluewater fishing, and it just got into my blood.” The pursuit of giant marlin and tuna drove Mossberg to travel all over the globe, from Puerto Rico to Portugal. Eventually, he moved from Georgia to Florida to quench his craving for saltwater sportfish.

“When the time came to expand my career, I happened to connect with a buddy who had co- founded one of the largest providers of work gloves in the U.S.” notes Mossberg. “He helped me to better understand the glove market by providing valuable insight into the technical side of crafting gloves of the highest quality.”

As he fished in different boats around the globe, Mossberg observed a shocking lack of quality in the gloves worn by captains and their crews; gloves that simply couldn’t hold up or properly protect them from the rigors of the salt, sun or wraps of leader.

“At that point, my opportunity and niche became clear — to give anglers a comprehensive array of the best fitting, most functional gloves for every situation. Today, plenty of glove companies focus on one or two areas within the sportfishing community, but no one offers an all-inclusive A to Z line. I set out to design a specific glove that matched every fishing scenario I could think of, and do it with input from the anglers themselves.” The final step beyond providing protection from fish and the elements was to give anglers a wide range of stylish, statement making color patterns.

The fingers on Fish Monkey’s Free Style Glove can be custom-cut by the angler for the perfect fit and application.

Intel for one of Mossberg’s first designs, the Beast Master Heavy Weight Wiring Glove, came from Captain Charles Perry, world-famous marlin man who’s wired more thousand-plus pound blue marlin than anyone alive. To help Mossberg enter the bass arena, professional angler Tim Horton stepped forward, offering key design data on Fish Monkey’s UPF-protecting Guide Glove series. Currently, Mossberg is working with ice fishing expert Brian Brosdahl on a new line of cold-weather gloves.

“The difference is the work we put in, both in the design process and the preparation. I’m constantly travelling to our factories to make product improvements and to hold them accountable on quality. For example, we’ve noted a lot of ‘slop’ in the palm area of other sun gloves on the market. With our Guide Gloves, we’ve undergone countless iterations to arrive at the right material, stitching and fit. We added our signature Monkey palm print, a grippy silicone that gives you a rock-solid connection to your fishing rod; it gets even better when wet.

“They’re so dialed in now that anglers tell us the Guide Gloves actually enhance on-water performance by reducing hand cramps and fatigue. Ultimately, that means more fish in the boat.

“We executed the same problem-solving process with our Face Guards. While most face-shields fit like a loose sock, ours has a tapered back to conform to your neck. We added stitching in other key areas for a better, more comfortable feel. We also gave the garment a vented mouth to eliminate the all-too-often dilemma of sunglass fogging.”

The Beast Master Heavy Weight Wiring Glove was designed by legendary marlin man, Captain Charles Perry.

Another new product, Fish Monkey’s UPF 50+ Free Style Glove is a first-of-its-kind product that allows the angler to trim finger length to their own exacting preferences. It is uniquely constructed to not fray or split at the seams, once cut. “This design is already being hailed by bass anglers as well as bow- and spear-fishermen,” says Mossberg.

Recently, to aid consumers in the potentially confusing purchase decision, Mossberg and his team developed what they call the ‘Glove Station Concept.’ The one-stop-shop retail display informs customers on which glove best matches their individual fishing style, rather than showing them an endless aisle of product.

“In the past year alone, we’ve doubled our styles to over twenty situation- and condition-specific glove models. But that’s just the beginning,” Mossberg affirms. “No matter where we go from here, it’s going to be a fun ride.”

THIRD FLW TOUR EVENT OF SEASON SET FOR LAKE SEMINOLE

THIRD FLW TOUR EVENT OF SEASON SET FOR LAKE SEMINOLE

Hurricane Michael Presents New Fishery to Pro Bass Anglers at Tournament presented by Costa

[print_link]

BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (Feb. 25, 2019) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), the world’s largest tournament fishing organization, is set to continue the 2019 FLW Tour season – the 24th season of the competitive Tour – next week, March 7-10, with the FLW Tour at Lake Seminole presented by Costa. Hosted by the Bainbridge Convention and Visitors Bureau, the tournament will feature 170 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals competing for a top award of up to $125,000 and valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2019 FLW Cup – the world championship of bass fishing.

The FLW Tour has visited Lake Seminole just once prior in FLW’s 24-year history. When the Tour visited the Georgia reservoir in 1996, Mississippi pro Jeff Magee averaged just over 15½ pounds a day to win just the fourth event in FLW Tour history. The 2019 event will mark the 213th tournament in FLW Tour history. The total purse for the FLW Tour at Lake Seminole presented by Costa is more than $860,000, including $9,000 through 65th place in the Pro Division.

“Hurricane Michael really changed the lake, 180-degrees,” said local FLW Tour angler J. Todd Tucker of Moultrie, Georgia. “It has opened up some new areas that haven’t been open for years. It’s scattered the grass and completely changed the grasslines. But, overall, Lake Seminole has been fishing pretty good and it’s going to be a very fun tournament.

“The fish are going to be shallow,” Tucker continued. “There should be quite a bit of spawning going on, and we’re going to see bass caught in all three phases – prespawn, spawn and postspawn. The key to winning this event will be to find the staging fish – areas with both prespawn and postspawn bass moving in and going out.”

Tucker said that fans following the action should expect to see a strong crankbait bite, along with lipless crankbaits, Carolina rigs, topwater baits and vibrating jigs all playing a role.

“A lot of guys are going to be fishing the lily pad stems and hydrilla up shallow, but the sand bars have always been a big player at Seminole,” Tucker said. “Guys are going to be able to catch them in a lot of different ways and we’re going to see some big fish.

“I think to make the top-30 cut to fish on the weekend, it’s going to take 31 pounds,” Tucker went on to say. “I predict the four-day winner will have right around 88 pounds. We should see quite a few 25- to 28-pound limits. If the tournament hits the lake at just the right time, the potential is definitely there for 33- to 34-pound bags.”

Anglers will take off at 7 a.m. CST Thursday through Saturday and 7:45 a.m. Sunday from the Bainbridge Earle May Boat Basin, located at 100 Boat Basin Circle, in Bainbridge. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins, March 7-8, will be held at the boat basin beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s weigh-ins, March 9-10, will also be held at the boat basin, but will begin at 4 p.m.

Prior to the weigh-ins, FLW will host a free Family Fishing Expo at the Bainbridge Earle May Boat Basin from 2 to 6 p.m. each day. The Expo is a chance for fishing fans to meet their favorite anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by FLW sponsors, and learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities.

Also for youth, the FLW Foundation’s Unified Fishing Derby will be held at the boat basin on Saturday, March 9 from Noon-2 p.m. The event is hosted by FLW Foundation pro Cody Kelley along with other FLW Tour anglers, and is free and open to anyone under the age of 18 and Special Olympics athletes. Rods and reels are available for use, but youth are encouraged to bring their own if they own one. The 1st and 2nd place anglers that catch the biggest fish will be recognized Saturday on the FLW Tour stage, just prior to the pros weighing in.

As part of the FLW Tour’s community outreach initiative, FLW Tour anglers will visit students, guests and staff at the Hutto Middle School, located at 1201 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, in Bainbridge on Wednesday, March 6 from 8:30-10 a.m. to introduce students to fishing and outdoor activities in their community. During the presentations the pro anglers will reinforce how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) relate to outdoor activities and the life as a professional angler as well as discussing different career paths within the outdoor industry.

Television coverage of the FLW Tour at Lake Seminole presented by Costa will premiere in 2019. The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show airs each Saturday night at 7 p.m. EST and is broadcast to more than 63 million cable, satellite and telecommunications households in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean on the World Fishing Network (WFN), the leading entertainment destination and digital resource for anglers throughout North America. FLW television is also distributed internationally to FLW partner countries, including Canada, China, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Portugal, Spain and South Africa.

The popular FLW Live on-the-water program will air on Days Three and Four of the event, featuring live action from the boats of the tournament’s top pros each day. New for 2019, host Travis Moran will be joined by veteran FLW Tour pro Todd Hollowell to break down the extended action each day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. On-the-water broadcasts will be live streamed on FLWFishing.com, the FLW YouTube channel and the FLW Facebook page.

In FLW Tour competition, the full field of 170 pro anglers compete in the two-day opening round on Thursday and Friday. The top 30 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advance to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continue competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.

Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2019 FLW Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The 2019 FLW Cup will be on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Aug. 9-11 and is hosted by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and Visit Hot Springs.

Tim Griffith and David Eyrse Win 2019 Alabama Bass Trail Smith Lake by Dan O’Sullivan

im Griffith and David Eyrse Win 2019 Alabama Bass Trail Smith Lake
by Dan O’Sullivan

February 24, 2019 – Jasper, Ala. – The first event of the 2019 Alabama Bass Trail’s Northern Division was marked by several things. Most notably, the necessary decision by tournament officials to push the tournament from Saturday to Sunday due to severe weather that was to hit the area; but also by the extreme flood conditions that saw the surface of Lewis Smith Lake nearly 20 feet in little more than a week.

However, if there was a theme to the day, it would be running water.

That theme referred to the amount of water running into Smith Lake, the water running over the launch ramps and into the parking lot causing anglers, ABT officials and Jasper, Alabama officials extra factors to consider, and the running water pockets that seemed to be a consistent theme amongst those teams that did well in the event.

In the end, while there were difficulties that faced everyone, the event came off smoothly and the team of Tim Griffith and David Eyrse found a single running water pocket that produced a multitude of keepers. Those keepers in turn produced a final limit that weighed 19.19 pounds that gave them a victory, and earned them the $10,000 Winner’s prize and an automatic berth into the Alabama Bass Trail championship in October on Lake Guntersville.

The pair said that they had a terrible practice, and the day before the tournament ended up looking at a map of Smith Lake, settling on an area in Rock Creek that looked good, and choosing something that they felt they could catch fish on. “We only caught one weighable fish in practice and a bunch of slot fish so we decided to just go fishing,” they said. “We found a creek that had clear water running in the back for about 50 yards before it mixed with the dirty water; we caught our fish there.”

They reported catching their fish on several baits, but one lure really made the biggest difference. “The best of our fish came on a screw lock Shaky Head with half of a Senko as the lure,” they said. “We rigged it weedless, that way we could work it through any of the cover we came across.  We sat in that one spot all day long and caught more than 60 keepers, culling through four or five limits before settling on our final limit around 4:00 p.m., we had a magical day it feels great to win and to be qualified for the championship already.”

The local team of Mark Meyer and Ty Campbell said that they spent their time up near Cullman and they used a football head jig and green pumpkin / chartreuse Gene Larew Biffle Bug creature bait combo and a Shaky Head Finesse worm to produce their 18.62-pound limit but earned them second place and the $5,000 runner-up prize.

“We’re from Cullman, so we kind of knew that we would need to look for running water and we found our fish in two pockets today,” they said.  “We spent our day in those two pockets and were able to catch enough fish to do well, we just needed to be able to put one more good quality kicker fish in the Box to have a chance to win. But, we started off the season well and we’re pleased with the finish.”

The team of Jamie Smith and Michael Rains weighed 17.13 pounds to finish the day and third place, they earned $4,000 for their efforts.

The Mountain Dew Big Bass of the tournament went to the 111th place team of Aaron and James Knott, their 4.81-pounder earned them $500 for the big bass bonus.

The Norhern Division of the Alabama Bass Trail hits the water next at Wheeler Lake on March 23.

Fishing Quarry Lakes: Breaking Down Lowkey Honey Holes

[print_link]

Here’s a riddle for all you bass anglers. What’s manmade, contains heavyweight largemouth and receives little fishing pressure? – No, it’s not some new reservoir in a remote section of Mexico or Zimbabwe.

If you answered a mining strip pit or rock quarry, you’ve obviously already sampled these overlooked bass fishing treasures close to your home.

A lot of strip pits are untouched and just seem to breed large bass. Strip pits are usually on private property and big boats can’t go on them. So they don’t get the fishing pressure, which gives the bass a chance to grow big. Strip pits also hold plenty of aggressive bass in various sizes as I found out while fishing on some abandoned mining holes in western Missouri. Runoff from rains earlier in the week had turned the water off-colored and a cold front dropped the temperature into the 40-degree range when we descended into the pits. Yet despite the unfavorable conditions, I still managed to catch 25 bass with the largest weighing about 3 1/2 pounds. Our outing was rated as a slow day though because on good days strip pits can yield 40 to 50 bass per angler with possibly a dozen fish in the 5- to 8-pound range.

What Are Quarry Lakes (Strip Pits)

quarry lakes fishing

Strip pits or quarry lakes are unique bodies of water that feature really deep, steep banks that lead into some shallow water. The steep walls and clear waters of a strip pit cause bass to suspend most of the time, so it’s best to try paralleling the bank and working a lipless crankbait close to the walls. A lipless crankbait is ideal because it can be worked in the bass’ strike zone (usually 4 to 8 feet deep) longer than other lures.

Areas To Target While Fishing Quarry Lakes

Prime locations to fish for bass in gravel pits include rock shelves, any shallow sandy areas, laydowns and shoreline bushes that cast shade into the water. The rocky bottom of a pit is ideal for working a crawfish imitator. Try a 3 1/4-inch plastic craw on a football jig for bedding bass and switch to a 4-inch craw and football jig during the summer. Strip pit floors contain gravel or sand, so you can steadily drag the craw on the football head jig across the smooth bottom without hanging up. Retrieving a walking bait at a steady pace is another productive pit technique, especially if bass are suspended 10 to 12 feet deep.

Jacksonville State Pair Makes Most Of Limited Bites To Win Bassmaster College Event On Lake Norman

CORNELIUS, N.C. — Six bites was all it took for Will Nichols and Jamon Phillips of Jacksonville State University to vault from 10th place to the top of the standings in today’s final round of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series tournament presented by Bass Pro Shops.

Nichols and Phillips weighed a limit of five bass that totaled 16 pounds, 2 ounces — the second heaviest of the three-day tournament. That gave them an overall three-day weight of 37-15 and put them into the hot seats with nine of the 12 duos fishing in the final round still waiting to weigh.

One by one, those teams crossed the stage, but all made quick exits. It was only after Day 2 leaders Jacob Moore and Gilliam Tharpe of North Carolina State presented a bag that contained only two bass that Nichols and Phillips broke into wide smiles and breathed heavy sighs of relief.

Even after they hoisted their tournament trophies into the air, Nichols and Phillips struggled to put their victory into perspective. It’s not often, after all, that a team has only six keeper bites and manages to jump nine spots in the standings to clinch victory.

The JSU duo made up more than 5 pounds on Saturday after starting the day with a two-day total of 21-13. Their catch throughout the week consisted mostly of spotted bass, but the ones they caught Saturday averaged more than 3 pounds apiece, which helped them sneak from behind for the win.

“It still hasn’t sunk in what just happened,” said Phillips, who was competing in his first Bassmaster College Series tournament. “This is an amazing feeling.”

The win for Jacksonville State, which is located in Jacksonville, Ala., was far from conventional. Nichols and Phillips caught only four bass during Thursday’s opening round for a 6-8 total. That forced them to try new things Friday, and it paid off.

“We had to swing for the fences,” Nichols said. “It was either that or we were going home. We got onto something that afternoon that changed things for us.”

That “something” was a pattern that required them to fish stained water in the backs of oxbows and dead-end canals scattered around Lake Norman. They fished primarily with crankbaits the final two days, though they alternated by flipping jigs to structure, including rocks, grass and docks along the shorelines.

Philips had the hot hand on Friday, when red crankbaits produced keeper bites in 2 to 10 feet of water. On Saturday, the backs of canals were active again, and the spotted bass were hungry early. Nichols said chartreuse-colored lures were key on Day 3.

The region was beset by steady rain and temperatures that hovered in the 40s throughout the tournament. The less-than-ideal conditions were hard on anglers, but they didn’t have a significant effect on the bass bite, especially for teams that were flexible.

“It was hard to figure out any sort of pattern,” said Nichols, who has competed in Bassmaster College Series events for three years. “Things changed constantly. We had to do a little bit of everything and cover a whole lot of water to catch the bass we caught.”

Nichols and Phillips won $2,500 for the Jacksonville State bass fishing team. The 12 tandems that made the Top 12 cut to fish on Championship Saturday split a total of $8,500 for their respective squads.
Jacob Louis and Nathan Doty of McKendree University in Tennessee finished second with 35-13, and Benjamin Hager and Noah Shaver of  UNC-Charlotte placed third with 34-15.

Moore and Tharpe of NC State won the Carhartt Big Bass Award with a 6-13 largemouth they weighed on Thursday. The catch earned them a $500 Carhartt gift card. Seventh-place anglers Chandlar Ellis and Gil Seen of Lander University in South Carolina won a $250 Bass Pros Shops gift certificate for having a 16-1 bag on Day 1 that ranked as the heaviest bag of the tournament.

In all, 256 teams from around the United States entered. The Top 26 duos (10 percent of the field) earned berths in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops, which will be held later this year at a yet-to-be-disclosed fishery.

The tournament on Lake Norman was the first of four regular season Bassmaster College Series events scheduled for 2019. It was sponsored by Visit Lake Norman, Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte.
Other Bassmaster College Series tournaments will take place on Alabama’s Smith Lake on March 21-23, Arkansas’ Bull Shoals Lake on April 25-27, and the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York on June 19-21.

Best Day Lifts Darold Gleason To Victory In Bassmaster Open At Toledo Bend

MANY, La. —A big shift in weather conditions and the kindness of a fellow competitor opened the door for local favorite Darold Gleason to show off his home lake’s potential with a 25-pound, 3-ounce catch that yielded a tournament total of 40-2 and delivered a long-awaited win at the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on Toledo Bend Reservoir.

After fierce thunderstorms cancelled Thursday’s scheduled second day of competition, the full field competed in today’s final round. Although the forecast called for more storms, Toledo Bend saw a foggy and relatively calm day that contrasted starkly with the more challenging conditions the Many, La., angler faced on Day 1.

“This is probably the best day of tournament fishing I’ve had out here,” said Gleason, who runs South Toledo Bend Guide Service. “Toledo Bend is one of the best lakes in the country. It’s fishing kind of tough right now with these cold conditions, but it is chock full of big ones.”

Targeting offshore structure that rose from a depth of 24 feet to 10 feet and created a bass-friendly current break, Gleason said he needed to hold his boat in a particular position. He struggled to do that on the first day, when he caught a limit that weighed 14-15 and landed him in 20th place. Today’s lighter winds, he said, brought a pleasantly different story.

Gleason caught his winning fish on a Strike King 6XD crankbait in blue/chartreuse, a 6th Sense C-15 crankbait also in blue/chartreuse, a 3/4-ounce V&M football jig in blue shadow with a green pumpkin V&M J-Bug trailer and a Carolina rig baited with either a V&M Pork Shad (green pumpkin candy) or a V&M Chop Stick (watermelon candy red).

Gleason said he fished the same spot as fellow pro Gary Adkins, whom he thanked for leaving him sufficient space to operate.

“The gentleman who shared the spot with me was the most respectful angler I’ve ever been around,” Gleason said. “He didn’t have to be that way, but he was. If it weren’t for him allowing me to fish where I needed to fish, I would not have been able to catch what I caught.”

For his effort, Gleason earned $42,800 and a berth in the 2020 Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, if he competes in the remaining three Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens in the Central Division.

“I’m blessed to have some great friends in this industry, and I’ve cheered them when they had their Classic chance,” he said. “For me to get mine, it’s just everything to me.”

Taku Ito of Chiba, Japan, placed second with 30-10. A limit of 15-4 put him in 16th place in the first round, and he turned in a highly consistent effort of 15-4 today.

“Two days ago, I caught fish on a spinnerbait shallow in muddy water around cypress trees,” Ito said. “But today, it was tough, so I fished the same spot, but deeper — in 20 feet. I used a 6.5-inch green pumpkin straight worm, Neko rigged with a 3/16-ounce weight.

“I caught three fish on the Neko rig and two fish on a 1/2-ounce white spinnerbait with willowleaf and Colorado blades. Slow rolling the spinnerbait was the key.”

Logan Latuso of Gonzalez, La., improved from 22nd place and finished third with 30-0. He added 15-6 to his Day 1 weight of 14-10. He attributed his success to sticking with his shallow water strength.

“I was just covering water, trying to find the best deal,” Latuso said. “I caught all my fish on a Delta Lures spinnerbait and a Delta Lures Thunder Jig with a V&M J-Bug trailer. I just fished anything in the water — shallow wood, shallow grass in the backs of creeks where the water was a little warmer. Today, my prime area got a little muddy from the rain, so I had to try new water, and it paid off.”

Travis Alcock of Antioch, Ill., won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 9-1.

Andrew Thomasson of Dublin, Va., won the co-angler division with 18-5. After placing 19th on Day 1 with 7-7, he added 10-14 in the final round and won $21,400.

Thomasson caught most of his bass on a dropshot with a Roboworm in the “margarita mutilator” color. His largest fish of the day, an estimated 6-pounder, ate a 1/2-ounce chartreuse/blue/white spinnerbait with a willowleaf/Colorado blade combination.

“I was slow rolling my spinnerbait in about 5 feet; they weren’t hitting higher in the water column,” Thomasson said. “I bumped it off a stump, and that fish grabbed it.

“I fished my dropshot in about 18 feet of water and used a short leader to keep the bait right on the bottom with a 1/2-ounce weight. On the graph, you could see them right on the bottom.”

Ryan Bowman of Seneca, S.C., won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award for the co-angler division with a 6-6 largemouth.
