Bassmaster Elite Series Anglers Are Looking For Giant Bass In Season Opener On St. Johns River

When the Bassmaster Elite Series last visited the St. Johns River, three years ago, four-time Bassmaster Classic champion Rick Clunn (right) won with 81 pounds, 15 ounces, including this one-day limit of 31-7. Helping him show off the catch are Trip Weldon (left), tournament director, and River Clunn.

Bassmaster Elite Series Anglers Are Looking For Giant Bass In Season Opener On St. Johns River

PALATKA, Fla. — The St. Johns River has been a familiar destination for the Bassmaster Elite Series since the circuit first visited there in 2011.

But this year’s Elite Series visit will be different than all the rest.

Really, really different.

The 2019 Bassmaster Elite at St. Johns River is scheduled for Feb. 7-10 with daily takeoffs at 7:30 a.m. ET from Palatka City Dock and Boat Ramp and weigh-ins at 4:10 p.m. each day at Palatka Riverfront Park.

It will be the season opener for the new-look Elite Series, which now features a smaller field of 75 anglers — down from more than 110 in years past — and a new payout scale that assures every competitor in the field will leave with a check.

The anglers will also find a new-look fishery, since much of the eelgrass the St. Johns River has long been famous for was decimated by Hurricane Irma last summer and has yet to return.

“To say that I’m excited for this tournament would be an understatement,” said Cliff Prince, a Palatka, Fla., resident and an eight-year Elite Series veteran. “Not only am I starting the season on my home water, but this is also a whole new ballgame, a whole new Elite Series. B.A.S.S. has given us an opportunity to really showcase what we can do — and I can’t wait!”

With that said, Prince knows the wealth of knowledge he’s acquired from living on the fishery may not help as much as it has in year’s past when he finished sixth, 56th and 16th in three previous Elite Series events on the river.

The hurricane changed things in ways that might force many anglers with experience on the fishery to start from scratch.

“In 2016, there was a lot more grass up and down the river from one end of it to the other,” Prince said. “When that storm came through last year, it just dumped so much rain. What grass didn’t get torn up by the storm got shaded out by the high water.

“This river was as high as I’ve seen it in my lifetime, and it stayed that way for a long time. Our tides are really just now getting back to normal.”

During past Elite Series events on the St. Johns, anglers who couldn’t find a solid pattern elsewhere could almost always rely on the tremendous number of bass that spawn in Lake George. But even that once-dependable area will require a different approach.

“Lake George is just not in good shape,” said Bernie Schultz, a Gainesville, Fla., angler who has fished the Elite Series since its inception in 2006. “There’s plenty of dollar weed — those little, small lily pads that grow in about 2 feet of water. But that won’t filter the water like it needs to.

“Eelgrass is a great filter. That’s why bass go to it —good cover, good filtration, lots of oxygen and it’s an ideal place to spawn.”

The number of bass that are spawning could play a major role in how much weight it takes to win the event’s $100,000 first-place prize.

Temperatures in the region have been colder than normal for the past 10 days. But a warming trend is predicted for this weekend, and several warm days could raise the water temperatures enough to send a wave of fish to the spawning areas.

“When the water temperature reaches the high 50s, there will be some fish go to the bank,” Prince said. “So there will be some fish caught sight fishing, I’m sure. In Florida, in February, you can’t afford not to at least look for them.”

With the absence of eelgrass, anglers will likely turn to dollar pads, wood, reeds, lily pads and even boat docks. Despite all the changes, Prince said he expects the usual tactics to play — topwater lures, bladed jigs, swim jigs, lipless baits, swimbaits and even standard Texas-rigged worms.

One thing he doesn’t expect, however, is the signature five-bass limits of big bass that have anchored the four-day weights of past winners.

“In 2016, Rick Clunn had a 31-pound bag and then three more good, solid days that helped him win,” Prince said. “That’s usually the way it works here. But if you look at the results from tournaments around here since the grass has disappeared, we just haven’t been having those 30-pound days.

“If you have a 25- to 27-pound bag and then back it up with a 20-pound bag and a couple of 15-pound bags, that’s gonna be strong.”

The St. Johns tournament, like all Elite Series events, is a free, family-friendly celebration of bass fishing, with activities for all ages.

The Elite Series Expo at Palatka City Ramp will be open Saturday and Sunday starting at 10 a.m. ET. Fans will have a chance to take a demo ride in a Nitro, Skeeter or Triton boat, look over the newest Toyotas, develop fishing skills in the Berkley/Abu Garcia Experience trailer, and win prizes and check out new products from leading companies in the fishing industry.

Fans can meet the Elites at Angler Alley on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m., and on Championship Sunday, they can join the Elite LIVE Watch Party and hang out with anglers and other special guests as they watch the final hours of Bassmaster LIVE. Elite angler clinics will be held onstage from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, which is also Military and First Responder Appreciation Day.

Experiencing the Magic: The Richmond Fishing Expo by Bruce Callis

Experiencing the Magic:
The Richmond Fishing Expo

[print_link]

With the new year, comes new beginnings, new sponsors for the anglers, new baits for companies, the anticipation of a new year of tournaments, and fishing shows. Here in Virginia, it is the Richmond Fishing Expo that starts off our new year. And every year we look to see what will be new, what friends will be there, and what pros will be there. This year was no different.

As I pulled into the parking lot of the Meadow Event Park in Doswell, Virginia on January 18, 2019, the sight of anglers lined up to enter the first day of the Richmond Fishing Expo greeted me with high hopes of another exciting year. For me, walking into the doors I am greeted by the wonderful workers there. Every year I get to catch up with the ladies and see how they have been. It starts off my experience and sets my day. And checking in with Les is always a pleasure, but sometimes it has to wait as he is always busy. This year I started off with a live feed on Facebook, giving everyone a view of what is there, or at least a tease of what awaits. And then the doors open and for some, its a controlled rush to get to a certain booth to get that prized lure before they are sold out. For others, its just walking and taking it all in.

While some things were the same, we still had some new players this year. Reelsnot, Green Top, Dave’s Tournament Tackle, Double D Jigs, Patterson Custom Baits, Ardent and more were there as always and are always busy spots. And we can’t have an Expo without boats, and this year we had some beautiful ones on hand and for sale. This year we also had some new vendors too; ProFound Outdoors and Line Cutterz were 2 of them. But we had no Missile Baits and John Crews booth, which is one of my favorite to visit.

The big tour professionals are always a crowd pleaser, and this year did not disappoint. For day one we had Mr. Edwin Evers and Mr. Timmy Horton, both having made the switch to the new MLF Bass Pro Tour and Saturday we had Mr. John Crews and Mr. Timmy Horton. Sunday is the final day and only Timmy could make the last day, which in itself was great, but a little disappointing. Whether it is up on the tank or down on the floor, they always educate and relate to the crowd, giving fans and anglers the opportunity to learn, take pictures, get autographs, and more.
I spent 3 days there, which gave me time to really talk to everyone and see everything, well, a lot of it. I still could not take in all the seminars, as some happened at the same time. And I ran into so many amazing friends there, and made many new ones. I ran into friends from across the state and even my next door neighbor. I talked with everyone, something I seem to have gotten better at and I learned a lot. That is what truly makes the show the best every year. But I did miss seeing some of my friends that Richmond is always a place we seem to catch up at.

Every year, there are going to be some who will be disappointed. We don’t have this big company here, or this company, or why did this one come. That is natural. I myself would love to see the bigger companies here, but just because they aren’t here doesn’t mean they are at the other shows and just not coming here.
I had the pleasure of attending the East Tennessee Fishing Expo the following weekend and I can tell you that in my opinion, it was an awesome show, but not necessarily better than Richmond. Some of the vendors who have skipped Richmond are there, the ones that sold a bunch of discounted lures and equipment, and they had the same basic stuff as we do. Like Richmond, there are plenty of custom lure painters and small plastic dealers. They had a ton of boats for sale. And they had pro anglers for the fans. Unfortunately, a lot were MLF anglers and had to leave early so they could get to Florida for their tournament. But I am sure they weren’t the only show this year that had the same issue.

There were no Strike King, SPRO, Lews, Quantum, or other big brand name booths there. I’m not even sure if the days when the Expos were the main way they got their name out to the public will ever come back. But we are blessed to have such amazing small companies, most of them being local to our area, at our shows. Like Richmond, Tennessee has their Green Top and Dave’s Tournament Tackle booths. Holly at C&C Outdoors is a prime example of one of the local brick and mortar tackle shops in Tennessee. I’ll be back if possible for sure.

We always want more at the big Expo for our area. When it comes to comparing Richmond to Tennessee, it becomes clear that each show is in itself special. It is like comparing apples to oranges. Both are excellent fruits, but each has it’s own special attributes. And no one person can say that either is better. None of our local Expos will ever be like the Expo at the Bassmaster Classic and none will ever be like it was back in the 1980s. Apples or oranges, just enjoy them and experience all they have to offer.

Marty Robinson poured it on late in the day on the Kissimmee Chain by Joel Shangle Jan 30,2018

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Let today serve as a warning to all 80 anglers competing on the MLF Bass Pro Tour: No lead is ever safe. But on the flipside – and as daily winner Marty Robinson happily proved on Wednesday – you’re rarely out of it in the Bass Pro Tour’s “every fish counts” competition format.

Propelled by one of the most frenetic fish-catching displays in MLF history, Robinson rocketed from near the bottom of the 40-man field competing in Group B at the B & W Trailer Hitches Stage One presented By Power-Pole on the Kissimmee Chain to win the round by over 14 pounds.

After struggling mightily with one fish for 2 pounds, 3 ounces over the first six hours of the day, Robinson racked up 33 fish for 53-13 over the final two hours of competition, blazing past Anthony Gagliardi (41-14), Jacob Powroznik (33-8), Greg Hackney (31-6) and Fletcher Shryock (30-1) to claim his first Bass Pro Tour round win.

“I’d say this was a pretty memorable day,” Robinson said. “My first day of competition on the Bass Pro Tour, to come from almost at the bottom and win it like that, I don’t think I could’ve written it any better. I can tell you one thing for sure, it was about as much fun as I’ve had in awhile.”

TERMINATOR® SHUDDERING BAIT TRIGGERS BITES LIKE NO OTHER BLADED JIG

TERMINATOR® SHUDDERING BAIT TRIGGERS BITES LIKE NO OTHER BLADED JIG

Pop quiz: What can move more water, a cup or a blade? Answer seem obvious? Keep that in mind when considering the new Terminator® Shuddering Bait and its unique, cupped swimming lip.

“There is no other vibrating swim jig on the market that moves nearly as much water as the Shuddering Bait does,” says Bassmaster Elite Pro Ott DeFoe. “The amount of vibration this dude puts off is second to none among bladed jigs.”

While a Shuddering Bait resembles a bladed jig, Terminator has innovated far beyond that template. “Most bladed jigs have a really thin, flat metal blade,” DeFoe explains. “The Shuddering Bait’s ‘blade’ is very different. It’s actually a cupped plastic swimming lip that catches and displaces water ahead of it.”

That innovation imbues the entire bait – including blade, jighead, skirt and soft-plastic trailer – with a unique, side-to-side shimmy. The resulting vibrations emulate feeding predatory fish, triggering strikes. “That’s really important when those bass are feeding heavy,” DeFoe says.

That’s important in stained and muddy water too, says Bassmaster Elite Pro Dave Lefebre.

“There are a lot of different bladed-jig-makers, a lot of different styles, but no one ever had one that I felt worked really well in the muddiest of water until I got my hands on this” Lefebre says. “It’s just got a really, really good thump to it.”

The Terminator Shuddering Bait comes in two sizes, 3/8 and 1/2 ounces.

“They’re heavy enough that I can make very targeted, low, underhand casts with them,” DeFoe says. “So it’s not just an open-water, chunk-and-wind bait.”

Armed for heavy combat with big bass, Shuddering Baits come with premium 5/0 VMC® hooks. “We’ve designed this to where it will handle big fish,” DeFoe says. “It’s also got really strong components. From the snap to the split-ring that attaches the blade to the head, every piece of it is geared to catching big fish.”

That’s music to Lefebre’s ears. “A lot of times, I’ve caught the biggest fish of my tournament on a bladed jig,” he says.

Shuddering Baits feature lifelike, interchangeable silicone skirts available in nine baitfish patterns paired with six blade colors: Chartreuse and White Shad (gold blade), Silver Shiner (silver blade), Crawdad (brown blade), Green Pumpkin (green pumpkin blade), Glimmer Blue Shad (clear blade), Nest Robber (brown blade), Dirty Chartreuse Shad (clear blade), Black Blue Purple (black blade) and Texas Craw (black blade).

“The ability to match the blade to the bait is something that with most bladed jigs, you just don’t have,” DeFoe says. “And you can have a matte-finish blade that doesn’t have the flash when you don’t want it.”

A stainless-steel keeper ensures your favorite soft-plastic trailer stays in place, cast after cast. “Having a trailer keeper extends the life of that bait and it makes more of your casts productive,” DeFoe explains. “Because your trailer’s going to stay in place, where it needs to be.”

Shuddering Bait jigheads are purpose-built for bass fishing as well. “It’s got a great head design – it comes through cover extremely well,” DeFoe says.

The jigheads – pre-rigged with complementary skit colors – come in five colors: white/chartreuse, white black shadow, black, green pumpkin, brown, brown/orange, white/sparkle and chartreuse/black fleck.

“When you think you just can’t get a bite – this is one of those baits that will get you a bite,” Lefebre says.

Howell Hammers Almost 50 Pounds in Shotgun Round 1 By Joel Shangle – January 29, 2019

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – New competition format, new all-star lineup of players in the game of professional bass fishing. But as the first Shotgun Round of the MLF Bass Pro Tour B & W Trailer Hitches Stage One presented By Power-Pole wound down Tuesday on the Kissimmee Chain, some ages-old truths about Florida largemouth proved themselves.

Truth 1: Florida-strain largemouth love sunshine.

Truth 2: Wind – no matter which direction it’s blowing – changes the way fish bite.

Day 1 weight leader Randy Howell took advantage of both.

On a day that started out flat calm with air temperatures in the lower 40s at takeoff, and got progressively warmer and windier, Howell piled 26 fish for 49 pounds, 12 ounces on SCORETRACKER, thanks mainly to two afternoon flurries.

Best Winter Bass Lures: 4 Finesse Lures That You Should Be Fishing

Best Winter Bass Lures: 4 Finesse Lures That You Should Be Fishing

[print_link]

By now, it is no secret that Old Man Winter has fully set in. Temperatures are generally cooler which has had an impact on the water and ultimately the fish. Most anglers know that in order to be successful during this time of the year they may need to approach each outing a bit differently. One of these main differences is downsizing baits.

However, this begs the question, “what are the best baits to downsize in the winter for bass?”. I am glad you asked. Fret not, we have got you cover

Best Winter Bass Lures: Shad Rap

best winter bass lures

The Rapala Shad Rap is a staple in nearly every anglers tackle box. This lure has caught an inconceivable amount of fish of all species since its inception. It is best known for its subtle swimming action and its effectiveness in cold water. Fish the 2.75″ Shad Rap on light fluorocarbon line on either spinning or baitcasting tackle and watch the magic happen. Target warmth-hoarding pieces of cover like laydowns, rip rap and docks with a slow steady retrieve.

Best Winter Bass Lures: The Senko

best winter bass lures

This may very well be the simplest bait in all of fishing. In literal terms, the bait is basically a soft stick of plastic. However, it’s simplicity is what makes it so deadly. The minimalist appearance of a senko worm is nonintrusive yet enticing to bass. The bait generally comes in a standard 5″ length. However, because the bait is made of soft plastic, anglers are able to cut down the bait to whatever size necessary. In particular, the Yamamoto Senko is known as the Mercedes Benz of senkos because of its vast selection of colors and ultra-soft plastic, making it irresistible to all fish.

Best Winter Bass Lures: Finesse Jig

best winter bass lures

You simply cannot talk about winter fishing, downsizing, and finesse tactics without a jig as part of the conversation. Similar to the Shad Rap, the jig has been around for what seems like forever. It comes in many colors, shapes, sizes, and styles. However, in the winter, a finesse style jig is your best bet for getting bit. One of our favorites is the Terminator Finesse Jig because it features a quality VMC hook, single wire weed guard, and a low profile. It’s a super durable jig that can be long-casted in nearly any depth range. For water 10′ and under, use the 3/16 oz model. Anything deeper than that, your best bet is the 1/4 oz size.

If you haven’t noticed the pattern of baits in this article, it is really quite simple. Minimalistic and subtle baits that can move slow and stay in the strike zone longer. These features are critical in cold water. Continuing with this trend of baits, we give you the fourth and final cold water killer: the tube.

Best Winter Bass Lures: The Tube

Another seemingly “do nothing” bait, the tube is known for its fish catching abilities in both warm and cold water. However, its tantalizing tentacles (say that five times fast) shine when water temperatures drop below 60 degrees and fish are finicky. In winter, the tube is best when fished on a light (3/16 or 1/4 oz) tube head and dragged at a snail’s pace along the bottom near or on rocks or other hard bottom areas. Try Karl’s Amazing Baits Snacc Tube. It is a 3.5″ fish-catching machine that is durable yet super soft. To get the most out of each bait, carry a bottle of super glue in the boat. All tubes, no matter how tough, will eventually split or break. Use the glue to piece them back together and help them stay on the jighead longer.
