Fishing For Smallmouth In The Winter: Tactics To Catching Cold Water Bass

Fishing For Smallmouth In The Winter: Tactics To Catching Cold Water Bass

[print_link]

Wintertime smallmouth fishing can be a challenge as bass push out to deep water when winter winds start spitting snow and the thermometer nudges the freezing mark. While smallmouth tend to stay deeper than their largemouth cousins most of the year, brown bass dwell in some of their deepest sanctuaries in the dead of winter. Finding these deep fish requires map reading skills and good electronics. The fish practically sit on the bottom and are sometimes inactive so you really have to fine tune your electronics to find them.

On Southern waters such as the chain of Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) lakes, smallmouth usually congregate at depths of 25 to 35 feet along breaklines where you can rely on vertical presentations to trick these bottom-hugging bass. Keeping a constant vigil on your electronics will help you stay on top of the breakline and keep your lure in the strike zone the whole time.

On highland reservoirs, you can catch deep smallmouth with a horizontal presentation by casting to channel swings. Here are some vertical and horizontal presentations to try for deep wintertime smallmouth.

Fishing For Smallmouth Bass In Winter: Vertical Tactics

Dropping a 3/4-ounce nickel hammered jigging spoon to the bottom and popping it off the lake floor is a productive wintertime smallmouth tactic.
As the spoon drops to the bottom, scan your graph for bass streaking up to the lure. Once your spoon reaches the bottom, work the lure in a subtle fashion. Just pop your rod tip maybe 2 to 3 inches, which is moving that spoon from about 1 foot to 18 inches off the bottom.

If smallmouth ignore the spoon switch to a drop-shot rig with a 4-inch finesse worm and hold that bait dead still on the bottom.

Jigs and tube baits are top choices for smallmouth when the fish are deeper than 25 feet along the channel swings. Position your boat a slight distance from the channel swing and cast your lure to the structure. Let the lure fall to the bottom and slowly move it along the lake’s floor. The key to this presentation is keeping in constant contact with the bottom and making subtle hops or shakes with your rod.

Smallmouth on the channel swings are usually feeding on crawfish or shad so select a 1/2-ounce casting jig tipped with a large plastic chunk in green pumpkin hues or a gray shad tube bait on a 1/4-ounce tube jighead to imitate the forage.

Stephens Notches Dominant Win At Bassmaster Open On Harris Chain

[print_link]

LEESBURG, Fla. — Despite changing conditions, Ohio angler Whitney Stephens turned in an impressive catch of five bass that weighed 24 pounds, 12 ounces in the final round of the 2019 Basspro.com Eastern Open at Harris Chain of Lakes. Added to his Friday weight of 32-12, it helped Stephens to an impressive winning total of 57-8 in an event that was shortened to two days by inclement weather.

The full field fished both days.

The shortened schedule amplified Stephens’ performance; specifically, Jesse Wiggins won the 2017 Open event on the Harris Chain with a three-day total of 59-4 — only 1-12 heavier than Stephens’ two-day total.

Returning to the pattern that yielded his personal-best tournament limit on Day 1, Stephens spent all of Day 2 targeting thick hydrilla beds in Lake Eustis. Fishing in about 8 to 10 feet, he noted that the week’s colder weather worked in his favor by predictably positioning big prespawn fish in the warmer refuges of thicker grass patches.

Stephens caught most of his fish by dragging a Zoom Magnum Trick Worm and a Speed Worm, both Texas rigged on a 4/0 VMC hook. He ended his day by moving to a different area and throwing a custom spinnerbait over the grass.

“I had a 7- to 8-pound cull on my last stop,” Stephens said. “I had high teens and I went to 24 on my last stop. It was just incredible.”

Stephens’ total gave him an impressive winning margin of 11-9. He made it look easy, but the winner said closing the deal was no easy task.

“It was a grind today,” he said. “You catch 24 pounds and you think it’s a lot, but I struggled today. The difference was the weather. We had another cold night, the water dropped a couple more degrees and the sun never came out.”

Bryan Schmitt of Deale, Md., finished second with 45-15. After placing second on Day 1 with 27-10, his productivity slipped to 18-5 Saturday. Schmitt caught his fish on 1/2- and 3/8-ounce prototype Hyabusa swim jigs. He alternated between Missile Baits Twin Turbo and Shockwave trailers.

“I had one key spot in Lake Harris; I caught them in a trench in the grass and there was a hard spot in there,” Schmitt said. “The trench was 8 to 12 feet deep and about 100 yards long.”

Kyle Welcher of Opelika, Ala., finished third with 41-12. Posting weights of 17-14 and 23-14, Welcher avoided the hydrilla that many of his competitors targeted and instead fished Yamamoto D-Shads on 1/8-ounce belly-weighted 4/0 hooks in eel grass beds.

“My biggest area was in Lake Eustis and 3 to 4 feet was where the best holes were,” he said. “You could catch some 2-pounders in 2 feet and out on the edge; but in the middle in 4 feet, that’s where the big ones were.”
Schmitt won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award for his 8-4.

Chuck Thurlow won the co-angler division with 32-12. With daily weights of 15-2 and 17-10, Thurlow said the week’s cold weather put the brakes on a spawning movement and opened the door for his back-deck opportunities.

“The biggest thing is that the fish haven’t pulled up, and I was so thankful to see that when I came down here,” he said. “The place I caught my fish was a staging spot. They were on a shell bed with some grass patches scattered around it.

“I figured out a technique they probably hadn’t seen a lot. I was Carolina-rigging a Zoom Speed Worm with a big weight.”

Tom Sutton of Bidwell, Ohio, won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award for the co-angler division with an 8-11.

How We Got Here
Major League Fishing invited 80 of the world’s best anglers to compete in the inaugural season of the Bass Pro Tour. The roster is comprised of Bassmaster Classic champions, FLW Forrest Wood Cup winners, Anglers of the Year and top tour performers from throughout the world of competitive bass fishing.

How it Works

The format for Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour events will be similar to the General Tire World Championship events that aired on CBS in 2017 and 2018. The 80 anglers will be separated into two groups, 40 anglers in each. Tuesday, Jan. 29 and Wednesday, Jan. 30 are Shotgun Rounds one and two, where 40 anglers (divided into Group A and Group B) compete to catch the highest weight each day. From there, all anglers move on to Elimination Rounds where their total weight caught will carry over. Thursday, Jan. 31 and Friday, Feb. 1 are Elimination Rounds where 40 anglers (Group A and Group B) compete to catch the highest weight. Anglers’ Shotgun Round weight is combined with the weight they catch in the Elimination Round. The top 20 anglers from each group advance to the Sudden Death Round. Saturday, Feb. 2 is the Knockout Round where 40 anglers (top 20 from each Elimination Round) compete. All anglers will begin the Knockout Round with zero weight. The Top-10 finishers advance to the Championship Round on Sunday, Feb. 3 when they will compete to catch the highest weight. A camera in every boat will livestream the action on MajorLeagueFishing.com.

Homecoming
Five of the 80 Major League Fishing pros hail from the Sunshine State.
  • Bobby Lane, Hometown: Lakeland
  • Chris Lane, Hometown: Lakeland
  • Shaw Grigsby, Hometown: Gainesville
  • Terry Scroggins, Hometown: San Mateo
  • Randall Tharp, Hometown: Port St. Joe
Who to Watch
From veterans to young anglers ready to make their mark, here’s a list to keep an eye on at Kissimmee.
  • Bobby Lane – The Lakeland native has one tour-level victory and nine career top-10 finishes on the Kissimmee Chain of lakes.
  • Terry Scroggins – The “Big Show” has six career top-10 finishes on the Kissimmee Chain including two career tour-level wins.
  • Dean Rojas – The formerballpark peanut vendorset the heaviest five-bass limit in history with a weight of 45 pounds, 2 ounces en route to a tour-level victory on Lake Toho in 2001.
  • Kevin VanDam – The winningest professional bass angler of all time is a perennial threat for the championship. A consistent winner regardless of format or location, the Kalamazoo, Michigan native has one victory on Lake Toho.
  • Shaw Grigsby – The former host of “One More Cast” owns one tour-level victory and has three career top-10 finishes on the Kissimmee Chain. Regarded as one of the best shallow water anglers in the world, the veteran angler should find success in Stage 1.
Don’t Count Us Out

In addition to the five aforementioned winning anglers on the Kissimmee Chain, four other Major League Fishing anglers have claimed victories in tour-level events and can’t be overlooked for the inaugural Bass Pro Tour victory.

  • Luke Clausen
  • Gerald Swindle
  • Brett Hite
  • Takahiro Omori
It’s Always Sunny in the Sunshine State.
Although Stage One marks the first event for the Bass Pro Tour, Major League Fishing is no stranger to the state of Florida. Three events in total have been held throughout the state, including the 2018 General Tire World Championship.
  • 2013 Challenge Cup in Istokpoga
  • 2016 Challenge Cup in Lake County
  • 2018 World Championship in Indian River County

C-MAP, a leader in digital marine cartography and cloud-based mapping, announced today the release of the second offering in its series of digital fishing map cards, Precision Contour HD – Tennessee. After an extensive survey campaign by C-MAP staff, the new card features highly detailed 1-foot contours, high-resolution satellite imagery and C-MAP’s one-of-a-kind Custom Color Depth Shading, as well as fishing and navigational Points Of Interest. The card is exclusive to chartplotters in the Navico portfolio of brands (Lowrance, Simrad and B&G).

The C-MAP survey fleet includes shallow-draft boats with surface-drive motors, enabling comprehensive coverage of every popular and important fishery in each state covered. Surveyed coverage includes most of the skinniest distant creek arms and shallowest backwaters, as well as key, fish-holding offshore structure like humps and holes, reefs and shoals, ledges and breaklines, sunken islands and points.

Precision Contour HD charts also feature C-MAP’s Custom Color Depth Shading* functionality, which enables anglers to highlight specific areas of interest, including current fish-holding depths and potential hazard areas. LIVETARGET Reveals

Ultra-Realistic Rudd Swimbait

Biologically precise anatomical features and patterns couple with biomimetic action to create a dynamic new swimbait

[print_link]

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (January 25, 2019) – With their golden sides and soft, deep-red fins, rudd are among the most important baitfish for growing oversized specimens of hard-fighting Esox and Sander. Rudd are widely distributed across Europe and represent important prey items for a variety of apex predators. While larger rudd are often pursued by anglers using tiny baits and light tackle, smaller rudd are perfect forage items for pike and zander.

Rudd Swimbait 190 in Metallic/Gold (220)

The luresmiths at LIVETARGET recognize the centrality of rudd to the feeding behavior of many European predators, and have devised an incredibly lifelike, rudd-imitating lure to target those important, popular freshwater gamefish.

Available soon, the LIVETARGET Rudd Swimbait combines biologically precise anatomical features and color patterns with biomimetic action and robust components to create a dynamic new swimbait for pike and zander. The swimbait’s unique three-dimensional anatomy, including fins, tail, head and eyes, couple with a true-to-life profile to synthesize the perfect illusion of a living, finning rudd.

The LIVETARGET Rudd Swimbait’s intelligently engineered tail oscillator generates a unique, rudd-inspired swimming action and vibration that elicits hot pursuit and violent strikes. Precision factory rigging ensures that the bait is ready to use immediately, achieving better balance without the need for frequent adjustment or tuning.

The LIVETARGET Rudd Swimbait is offered in three sizes: the Rudd 130 at 4.75”, 1.25 oz, 36g , the Rudd 150 at 6”, 2.25 oz, 64g, and the Rudd 190 at 7.5”, 4.25 oz, 118g, each internally weighted and precision balanced for a natural, medium-slow sink speed. The three different sizes of the Rudd Swimbait have distinct, characteristic hook arrangements.

he LIVETARGET Rudd 130 and 150 swimbaits are armed with single, extra-wide gap hooks that ride behind the baits’ dorsal fins, anatomical features that double as shields to protect the hook from collecting vegetation and other debris. In addition, the Rudd 130 and 150 feature ventral-side accessory pins for convenient on-the-water customization using willow leaf attractor blades, or even a secondary hook to bolster your hooking percentage.

Rudd Swimbait 130/150 in Metallic/Pearl (219)

Rudd Swimbait 130/150 in Metallic/Gold (220)

The largest LIVETARGET Rudd 190 swimbait features a unique hook configuration, with twin extra-strong double hooks riding on the ventral side of the lure. Specialized rare-earth magnets, integrated into the soft plastic body of the Rudd Swimbait, hold the double hooks tight to the lure, ensuring a stable swimming action and maximizing hook-up ratios. Each of the belly hooks can be independently positioned to ride with their points turned upward, which enhances the lure’s swimming action and reduces the amount of debris collected when the swimbait is fished through heavier cover, or with the points turned downward, resulting in greater exposure of the hooks within the primary strike zone.  This user-customizable hook configuration is unique among swimbaits and makes the LIVETARGET Rudd an incredibly versatile choice for targeting apex predators.

All sizes of the LIVETARGET Rudd Swimbait are offered in two ultra-realistic color schemes to replicate the common varieties of rudd encountered in European waters: Natural/Pearl (219) and Metallic/Gold (220). LIVETARGET Rudd swimbaits will be available Spring 2019.

14 Pound Bass Caught From The Tennesee River

Just in from WTVC News, The Tennessee River has pumped out another MEGA BASS!

Derek Turner, a 27-year-old lunker hunter was recently preparing for an upcoming tournament with his fishing partner when he hooked into a certified river giant. The two were faced with grim conditions as they chucked crankbaits in the midst of an uninviting Tennessee winter storm.

“You might have the best rain gear in the world but rain always creeps through cracks and crevasses. But like most people, we work during the week. When weekends roll around we go and make the best of it.”

Derek was targeting a school of bass feeding on baitfish that he located using his electronics. The fish were sitting in a shallow ditch just off the main river channel. He fished with a 3/4 oz Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap (classic ledge bait) while running 17lb Fluorocarbon line. The guys know this area well and had caught a 3+ pounder previously in the day before hooking into the biggun.

“I hooked one and it didn’t move, I was just kind of holding it”

Sometimes you just know you’ve hooked into a big fish, you don’t need to see it jump or boil on the surface, you just know. That was the case for Derek, he right when he seth the hook that this fish was different.

It didn’t jump during the battle but it did roll to the surface providing just enough of a glimpse to let the boys know they were hooked into a true giant. Thanks to a handy net man the fish made it to the boat after a quick and nerve-wracking battle.

The fish measured out to 27 inches with a 23-inch girth weighing in at 14 pounds and 3 ounces, just one pound short of the state record! They measured the fish on a certified scale at the boat landing and then returned it safely to the spot where it was caught.

Congrats to Derek and good luck on the tournament trail this season!

Stephens Hammers Offshore Grass For Bassmaster Open Lead On Harris Chain

[print_link]

LEESBURG, Fla. — Ohio angler Whitney Stephens harnessed the upside of the week’s weather change to catch a massive limit of 32 pounds, 12 ounces and storm into the Day 1 lead at the Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open on Florida’s Harris Chain of Lakes.

The fierce weather system that blew through Central Florida Thursday morning forced the cancellation of the tournament’s scheduled start and ushered in a cold snap that sent Harris Chain bass looking for warmer cover. Stephens took this as his cue to head offshore and target the heating blankets.

“It was totally offshore hydrilla for me; just offshore staging areas in 8 to 12,” he said. “They’re setting up to flood the banks.

“I tried to find the thickest patches of hydrilla I could find and just did circles around them. I think the cold night probably got them into the hydrilla a little more. I went flipping one day in practice and maybe had 12 pounds. With the cold weather, I just prepared to fish offshore.”

Noting that today’s catch was his biggest tournament limit, Stephens said he spent all day in one lake. He opted to keep his location confidential, but he said he caught his fish on a mix of reaction baits and slow-moving baits.

“It was a little slow in the morning for me, but from 10 o’clock on, it was good,” Stephens said. “I found two areas with multiple fish, but other than that it was one here, one there. My biggest one was 8-3 and that came around noon.

“I had a good practice and it all just worked out. I’m a little short for words; it was just an amazing day.”

Bryan Schmitt of Deale, Md., is in second place with 27-10. After dividing his time primarily between lakes Harris and Griffin — with a brief stop in Lake Eustis — Schmidt was guarded about which baits he used. But he said he had a particular scenario that produced his fish.

“There’s a certain deal I’m looking for,” Schmidt said. “I had three main areas, and I was able to return multiple times to each spot. It was an even deal. I got a good start and then I had some key culls. I think all of my fish were prespawn. They weren’t ganged up; they were spread out big time.”

David May of Odessa, Fla., is in third with 22-14. Fishing mostly reaction baits, May anchored his sack with a 7-15 kicker. His day comprised a combination of patterns, with flipping baits early and then reaction baits in the afternoon.

“Early on, I was going after the prespawners and stagers shallow,” May said. “I did that most of the day. Then as the day was winding down, I thought I’d do something different and go after post-spawners. That’s where the big one came — in the last 30 minutes of the day.”

Schmidt is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 8-4.

Steve Robbins of Piketon, Ohio, leads the co-angler division with 18-5. Robbins caught his fish by dragging a Texas-rigged worm through hydrilla in 8 to 14 feet. Approximately 30 minutes before check-in, he boosted his limit with an 8-3.

Tom Sutton of Bidwell, Ohio, holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with an 8-11.

Saturday’s takeoff is scheduled for 7 a.m. ET at Ski Beach Park. The weigh-in will be held at the park at 3 p.m.

Major League Fishing Announces Dayton Venue as Bass Pro Tour Stage 4

Major League Fishing Announces Dayton Venue as Bass Pro Tour Stage 4
TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 25, 2019) – Major League Fishing announced today that Dayton, Tennessee is the fourth destination of the 2019 MLF Bass Pro Tour schedule, with its famed big bass fishery Chickamauga Lake ready to play a significant role in who wins the event, April 9 – 14.
The Rhea County region, anchored by county seat Dayton and including much of Chickamauga and Watts Bar lakes on the Tennessee River, has been a proud and prominent supporter of fishing and its economic impact to the area for several years.
“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to bring the MLF Bass Pro Tour to our backyard in its inaugural season,” said Dennis Tumlin, Executive Director of Economic Development for Rhea County and Director of Dayton’s “Fish Dayton” brand. “It’s a great matching of our exceptional bass fishing to the sport’s most exciting competition in MLF’s catch, weigh and immediate-release format.”
“Rhea County is proud to showcase our world-class fishery during one of the prime times of the season for giant double-digit bass. If you’ve never tried our legendary fisheries firsthand, I encourage you to make plans now to come and join in on the festivities and see if you can catch your own personal best!,” commented Rhea County Mayor, George Thacker.
Scenic Chickamauga will be familiar to most of the 80-angler Bass Pro Tour field because it has hosted many major bass tournaments over the years. In fact, living in the proximity of the 36,240-acre lake are a handful of pros who are nearing or have already surpassed the million-dollar milestone in career tournament earnings, including Michael Neal, Andy Morgan, Wesley Strader, Jacob Wheeler and John Murray.
Big names and big bass hook-up frequently on Chickamauga Lake, just as area super star Andy Morgan does here with a healthy largemouth. But Morgan and several other local heroes will have tough competition on the sprawling fishery as they go against bass fishing’s finest in the 80-angler MLF Bass Pro Tour field during the April event. “It’s one thing to have Toho, Conroe and the untapped fisheries like Falls, Jordan and Harris to start the season, but to have ‘The Chick’ in the cleanup position makes this early season lineup amazing,” said Michael Mulone, MLF Senior Director of Events and Partnerships, in referring to the tour’s season openers in Florida, Texas and North Carolina prior to Tennessee. “You’re likely to see some big-time home runs coming from the best hammers in all of fishing at this Dayton stop.”
The sizable Chickamauga and its nearly 60-mile length seem to always make the lake a tournament wildcard because of its vastness, diverse cover and generous population of bass over 10 pounds.
“Just this past weekend, we had a 14.2-pounder caught and released, and the lake has really been fishing well for the past several years. We invite everyone to come participate in the activities throughout the competition days to witness firsthand our fabulous fishing and Southern hospitality. Please put this Dayton visit on your calendars now,” Tumlin added.
As in all Bass Pro Tour events, the Tennessee River venue will feature seven hours of daily live stream coverage during each competition day, with free access to the real-time broadcast found at www.majorleaguefishing.com.
Also, the Dayton event will be developed into a two-hour television show that will air on Discovery Channel in the fourth quarter of 2019. It will repeat on Sportsman Channel in first and second quarters of 2020.
MLF programming also airs on Outdoor Channel, World Fishing Network, CBS, CBS Sports Network and Discovery Channel, and all episodes are available on-demand on MyOutdoorTV (MOTV).
