MLF Bass Pro Tour Names Texas’ Lake Conroe Its Second Destination

Beautiful Lake Conroe in Texas, located about 40 miles north of Houston, becomes the second stop for the 2019 Bass Pro Tour, Feb. 12 – 17. Aesthetically-developed shorelines and lots of boat docks, islands, bulkheads and other fish-holding structures add to the lake’s scenery and fishing diversity to make it a quality tournament destination.  (Photo courtesy Conroe Convention and Visitors Bureau. TULSA, Okla. (Dec. 12, 2018) – Major League Fishing announces the venue for the second stop on its new eight-event Bass Pro Tour is Lake Conroe, a popular recreational lake in Texas located about 40 miles north of Houston. The news follows only a few days after the league announced its series opener is scheduled for Florida’s Kissimmee Chain of Lakes in late January.
Many of the Bass Pro Tour’s 80-man roster, among which are seven anglers from Texas, have experience on the 21,000-acre lake that serves as an alternate drinking water supply to Houston. However, previous knowledge may not be much of a factor during the 2019 Bass Pro Tour competition dates of Feb. 12-17, because recent rains have carried new debris into the lake to create additional bass hideouts and possibly altered some of the known brushpiles and other existing cover in the lake.
“Lake Conroe is a great bass tournament fishery because it has such a diverse variety of cover including docks, islands, bulkheads, humps and standing timber,” said Michael Mulone, MLF Senior Director of Events and Partnerships. “Complementing the usual appearance of a double-digit bass caught during competition, is the great presence and support by our hosting partners and the entire angling community from the region and state.”
“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. actively supports catch-weigh-immediate release tournament practices in Texas,” said Dave Terre, Chief Inland Fisheries Management and Research, TPWD Inland Fisheries Division. “The format used by Major League Fishing maximizes survival of tournament-caught bass by totally by bypassing live well containment or a stressful stage weigh-in process.”
“They even use unique tournament rules to promote proper handling of fish while on the water. We know, based on our studies, that larger bass are particularly susceptible to stress and delayed mortality with traditional tournament formats. MLF’s low impact format may be particularly meaningful to Lake Conroe, or others lakes, where fisheries management efforts are geared towards the production of big fish. In our mind, the MLF format has the same impact as simple “catch and release” fishing – It’s practically zero!  It really can’t get any better than that,” Terre added.
Although in development over a period of years, the creation and launch of the Bass Pro Tour was officially announced in September. Its catch-weigh-immediate release format is one distinguishing characteristic from the other large tournament trails, but so is the fact that all of the rules for the new tour are decided by and voted upon by the Bass Pro Tour anglers.
Perhaps the most game-changing rule implemented by the anglers to date is when they voted to have no entry fees for participation in the 2019 Bass Pro Tour events.
MLF pro Alton Jones of Waco, Texas, will be the first to say “Don’t look for any home court advantages” for the Texas anglers. The majority of his major tournament victories over his nearly 40 years of competing have come in other states.  Click to enlarge/download)

“We control our own destiny, and that’s what makes Major League Fishing and this new tour so unique,” said MLF pro Gary Klein, a Texas-resident and co-founder of the league and the Bass Pro Tour. “We see competitive bass fishing as a major league sport and that’s the basis for all of our decisions going forward. As for the Conroe destination, I can’t be more pleased than to have a Texas lake become one of our earliest stops in 2019.”

MLF will feature five hours of live streaming during each competition day with free access to the real-time broadcast being available at www.majorleaguefishing.com. Also, the Conroe Bass Pro Tour event will result in a 2-hour television show that will air on Discovery Channel in the fourth quarter of 2019. It will repeat on Sportsman Channel in first and second quarters 2020.
MLF also has programming on Outdoor Channel, World Fishing Network, CBS, CBS Sports Network and Discovery Channel, and all episodes are available on-demand on My Outdoor TV (MOTV).

Fish With Chris & Trait Zaldain Sweepstakes Open For Entries

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — By entering the Fish with Chris & Trait Zaldain sweepstakes on Bassmaster.com, one fortunate fan will have the chance to learn firsthand from not just one, but two professional anglers.

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Chris Zaldain has earned 15 Top 10 finishes with B.A.S.S., including an Elite Series victory at the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship event on Sturgeon Bay in 2015. He’s qualified four times to fish the Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

Chris’s wife, Trait, is a well-known female bass angler who started fishing B.A.S.S. events in 2012. Currently, she is fishing the Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens in hopes of qualifying for the Elite Series and Bassmaster Classic. Trait has also partnered with Eagle Claw-Wright & McGill to design her own signature series of rods and rod-and-reel combos, which are available at Walmart.

The duo has various fishing strengths: Chris is known for drop shotting and jerkbaiting, while Trait excels with a spybait and a swimbait.

“We have two totally different fishing styles,” Trait said. “But, it’s always fun on the boat with us. The winner will get to experience and learn both styles.”

The sweepstakes winner receives a free fishing trip on the St. Lawrence River out of Waddington, N.Y., plus roundtrip airfare within the continental United States, a three-night hotel stay, a car rental and $500 in cash.

The winner will also receive an incredible prize pack that includes a Skeeter ZX190 bass boat with a Yamaha VF150LA, two Humminbird Helix 10 fishfinders, assorted Sportsman Warehouse fishing gear, Seaguar fishing line, Megabass rods and lures, Santone Lures products and apparel, Trokar Fishing line, other assorted lures and rods.

“We’ve worked hard with our sponsors to provide the best equipment for an angler,” Chris said. “With this prize package, the winner will be fully tournament ready.”

Ranked No. 8 on Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes list for 2018, the St. Lawrence River will be a great fishing destination for the sweepstakes winner and the pros.

“The St. Lawrence River is by far the best smallmouth fishery in the world,” Chris said. “It’s loaded with fish and you really can’t beat the weather there in August.”

The total prize package is valued at $52,500.

Those who would like to enter the contest can do so via Bassmaster.com through March 31, 2019. The winner will be selected on or about April 8.

Introduction to the Best Rods on Earth

[print_link]

St. Croix’s ultra-popular Triumph and Premier series excel in technology, performance and aesthetics for virtually any sportfishing application

Park Falls, WI (December 11, 2018) – When it comes to spending money on a fishing rod the sky’s virtually the limit. But is breaking the bank always necessary to find the right wand? St. Croix says no, and has been saying no for decades with the availability of Premier and Triumph, rod families that possess a high-level of technology and excel in performance and aesthetics. Not only that, both families comprise models that suit virtually any sportfishing application, so finding the right rod is any easy task.

Take for example Premier spinning. They have been St. Croix’s most popular U.S.-built rod series for decades, what with their attractive combination of high performance and value along with classic styling. Available in 39 models, anglers can easily find exactly the right rod for every freshwater species from panfish and trout to pike and even musky. On the casting front, anglers can also choose from over 30 models to match any fishing application. And the price for each? Reasonably priced between $100 and $200 – and only slightly over $200 for musky models.

One longtime user of the rods is Steve Heiting, editor of Musky Hunter magazine, who hits the water with between eight and ten St. Croix musky rods at any one time. “I started fishing St. Croix Premier musky rods in 1988 when I was guiding in northern Wisconsin and St. Croix was my first pro staff appointment. The rods were state-of-the-art then and remain so today. They were the best musky rods available then and have even improved over time as St. Croix has developed new technologies over recent decades. The name really says it all. They are premier rods and provide a great bang for the money. And they’re still made in the U.S.A., which not only creates pride for the company but those of us who fish them. They are one tremendous fishing rod made by American workers who care about they do. That’s huge.”

St. Croix’s VP of Brand Management, Jeff Schluter, remarks: “Premier and Triumph rods are built to the same exacting standards as our more expensive series and provide anglers from all walks of water an ideal opportunity to experience legendary St. Croix performance.  In addition, they’re incredibly inviting to anglers new to fishing.”

Lindner’s Angling Edge TV hosts Al Lindner and James Lindner concur, two anglers who are strong ambassadors for the brand and its many rod families, from the Premier through the most expensive and technologically advanced models available. “What St. Croix has done so well is create the right powers and actions across all of their rod families—Premier included—for so many presentations and fish species. Whether you’re talking ultralight, light, medium, medium-heavy or heavy power and moderate or fast actions there’s a model to suit every specific application. And they all offer unparalleled hook setting ability, casting accuracy, bait delivery, and fish landing. When Al and I first started fishing St. Croix rods we were simply amazed at the superb performance across the rod families. When the rods load up it’s like hitting a nail precisely with a hammer. We were simply amazed compared to what we were used to fishing,” says James Lindner.

Al Lindner adds: “What you get for the money is really remarkable. In terms of quality and value the Premier family is at the top of the game. There are not too many U.S.-manufactured rods that have been around for 60 years and offer what Premier does, plus each is backed by St. Croix’s Superstar Service and 5-year warranty. Again, that’s some exceptional value.”

PREMIER FEATURES (Casting & Spinning)

  • Premium quality SCII graphite.
  • Kigan Master Hand 3D guides with slim, strong aluminum-oxide rings and black frames.
  • Kigan Master Hand 3D top with SiC ring on musky casting models.

  • Fuji® ECS, TCS or PSS reel seat with frosted silver hood on casting models.
  • Premium-grade cork handle.
  • Kigan hook-keeper.
  • Two coats of Flex-Coat slow cure finish.
  • 5-year warranty backed by St. Croix Superstar Service.
  • Outstanding strength, sensitivity and hook-setting power.
  • Designed and handcrafted in Park Falls, U.S.A.

Triumph, St. Croix’s other gateway series, are durably sensitive and powerful rods designed for savvy anglers seeking the best match of performance and value. Anglers can choose from 19 spinning rods, five casting rods, six travel rods, four musky rods, and nine salmon & steelhead rods. And the price? Most models are just over $100, with anglers still becoming the beneficiaries of legendary St. Croix technology and performance.

“Triumph is a really fine fishing series going on its second decade in our lineup,” says Schluter. And while we have higher performance rods, Triumph offers a great, high-performing introductory rod for lots of applications. When it gets down to it, Triumph shares some similarities to the Premier—both have full cork handles, SCII graphite, and many similar components—so anglers really have lots of options across both lines to build a large arsenal of specific application rods on a reasonable budget.”

Call them gateway rods if you want, but the fact remains that countless anglers rely on both Premier and Triumph rods as their primary rods and continue to do so. Why? Ultimately, their design, performance, aesthetics, and warranty far exceed their price point and the rods truly live up to their names.
