Power-Pole Signs Multiyear Agreement To Sponsor B.A.S.S. Events

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — JL Marine Systems Inc., maker of the popular Power-Pole shallow water anchoring system, has renewed and extended its premier-level sponsorship for all Bassmaster tournament circuits through 2021, B.A.S.S. announced today.

The sponsorship includes the Bassmaster Elite Series, BassPro.com Bassmaster Opens, Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation events presented by Magellan Outdoors, Bassmaster Team Championship, Carhartt Bassmaster College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops, Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School Series and the “Super Bowl of Bass Fishing,” the Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

Power-Pole stepped up from supporting sponsor to the premier level in 2016 and this year renewed the relationship through the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons.

“Power-Pole anchors have become indispensable equipment on the boats of competitive anglers, whether they fish the Bassmaster Elite Series or one of our grass-roots circuits,” said Bruce Akin, CEO of B.A.S.S. “Just a few years ago, you could identify a top-level pro angler by whether he had two Power-Poles on his boat. Now, almost everybody who is serious about bass fishing has them.

“We’re excited that Power-Pole has decided to continue this great partnership.”

The idea for the first Power-Pole anchor came to Florida resident and lifelong angler John Oliverio during a saltwater fishing trip about 20 years ago. Oliverio spotted several big snook on a sandy flat, but using a traditional anchor to hold his boat in place near the fish proved problematic due to windy conditions and the skittish nature of the fish.

Believing there had to be a better way, Oliverio built a model of the first Power-Pole out of LEGOs. Then with the help of his friend Len Mriscin, he eventually constructed a working prototype that he used during a saltwater fishing tournament in 2000.

He sold the first Power-Pole hydraulic anchor shortly after the event, and that led to the formation of JL Marine Systems, which now occupies a 38,000-square-foot facility in Tampa, Fla. Power-Pole has become a world-famous brand, and the shallow water anchors have become especially popular among serious bass anglers.

“B.A.S.S. has been a great partner over the years, and we are proud to continue our relationship as premier-level sponsors,” said Robert Shamblin, vice president of JL Marine Systems, Inc. “Our relationship with B.A.S.S. has always allowed us to showcase our products at the highest level of competition. B.A.S.S. provides a great platform for us to reach millions of bass fishing fans across the country. With all of the new and exciting changes at B.A.S.S., the next couple of years will be amazing, and we are looking forward to being a part of it.”

The sponsorship deal entitles Power-Pole to prime exhibition space during all 2019, 2020 and 2021 B.A.S.S. events, beginning with the season opener, the Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open on the Harris Chain of Lakes, Florida, Jan. 24-26, and including the Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, scheduled for March 15-17 in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Power-Pole Captain’s Cash Rewards Club program will also provide a $1,000 contingency award to a qualified angler who wins an Elite Series event and an award of $500 to a Rewards Club member who wins an Opens tournament. Contingency awards also are being offered to winners of B.A.S.S. Nation, Team and College Series events.

Cal Coast Fishing Introduces the Battle Box Tackle Storage System
New Modular Tackle Tray will Revolutionize Terminal Tackle Organization

[print_link]

Carpentaria, Calif. – December 4, 2018 – In keeping with their reputation for being one of the most innovative, problem solving manufacturers in the fishing industry, Cal Coast Fishing introduces their new Battle Box premium tackle management system.

The new Battle Box system incorporates a custom designed black and yellow molded shell that features the use of flip top Ammo Cans and uniquely designed Tackle Mags to modularly store tackle in the system.  The Ammo Cans and Tackle Mags give the angler the ability to store terminal tackle by type; finesse, Flippin’, Punchin’ or any other set they wish, and change out the internal containers to fit the need for the particular lake or fishing conditions that day.  Custom foam inserts help hold the components securely in place, yet provide the ability to be removed for bulk storage, or segmented storage with the included dividers.

Dave Romanus, CEO of Cal Coast Fishing said that the system; which took more than a year to perfect, was built to allow a variety of anglers to customize based on need.  “A pro angler or boater may like to incorporate a box for each application, but the Battle Box allows anglers with space considerations to condense,” he said.  “The Battle Box can be configured by co-anglers and kayak anglers to pair complementary products in one Battle Box to conserve space by utilizing the features we’ve incorporated into the design.”

Romanus said that the Battle Box concept should be credited to his unbelievable staff. “I really believe in listening to our team who spend a ton of time on the water,” he said.  “They have great ideas and give great feedback. This product never would have come to life if it wasn’t for them.  I really think when people see the functionality of the system; they will catch the vison and find their own layout that works for them.”

Each Battle Box measures 13 1/2-inches wide, by 9 3/4 inches tall with an outside depth of 4-inches.  The system comes with 20 separate cylindrical Ammo Cans to organize hooks, weights, jigheads, swivels, bobber stops and other items.  Several of the Ammo Cans feature foam plungers that allow the angler to put small items into the Ammo Can under the plunger to help keep them from rattling around and become tangle or damaged.

The Battle Box system also comes equipped with one Tackle Mag and two interchangeable foam inserts that allow the angler to load hooks or large tungsten to suit their needs.  Two sheets of included label blanks allow the angler to mark the caliber of their terminal tackle, and four dividers are included to allow for even more flexibility in customization.

The Battle Box will retail for $42.99, and will be available at Cal Coast Fishing retailers in December 2018.  For more information or for pre-order, visit the Battle Box page at https://calcoastfishing.com/product/battle-box/.

Pursuit Channel To Air The Bassmasters And Other B.A.S.S. Programming In 2019

Pursuit Channel To Air The Bassmasters And Other B.A.S.S. Programming In 2019

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Fans of the long-running The Bassmasters TV show will have more opportunities to watch their favorite fishing program thanks to a new multi-year agreement between B.A.S.S. and the Pursuit Channel.

Under the agreement, the Pursuit Channel will air 26 episodes on Saturdays during the first and second quarters of 2019, with each show repeating on the following Sunday morning and other times to be announced. Pursuit reaches more than 30 million households after a remarkable 15 percent growth year to date in 2018.

“This partnership with Pursuit means more opportunities for fans to find and enjoy our Bassmaster Elite Series and Bassmaster Classic programming — and that means more ways for anglers to learn how to catch the five biggest bass on their next fishing adventure,” said Mike McKinnis, vice president of media content of JM Associates and producer of Bassmaster LIVE and The Bassmasters.

“Pursuit Channel is honored by this new partnership with B.A.S.S., the worldwide authority on bass fishing,” said Rusty Faulk, CEO of the Alabama-based television network. “B.A.S.S. features the best pro anglers competing in the best tournament series across America, and our viewers will eat it up! We also look forward to other natural opportunities to jointly grow our brands and the angling community.”

B.A.S.S. will continue to air its award-winning programming from the Bassmaster Elite Series and Bassmaster Classic on ESPN2, as it has done since 2000. Because the first event of the 2019 Elite Series season does not occur until early February — the Bassmaster Elite at St. Johns River, Florida, Feb. 7-10 — the first episodes of Bassmaster competition to appear on Pursuit will be re-airs of the most exciting Elite events and Classics of recent years, including those won by Elite Series standouts Steve Kennedy, Rick Clunn, Drew Benton, Keith Combs and others.

“We are thrilled to be able to air The Bassmasters on Pursuit Channel, which has an unmatched track record of growth among the audiences our anglers and sponsors most want to reach,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “With Pursuit and ESPN2, plus our incredibly popular Bassmaster LIVE programming on Bassmaster.com, ESPN3 and the WatchESPN App, we are providing cutting-edge fishing content to a wide spectrum of fans and aspiring anglers.”

The Bassmasters episodes will air initially on Pursuit Channel during the programming block, “Walmart Reel Life Saturdays presented by Berkley and Abu Garcia,” which also includes outdoor shows by Bassmaster Legends Jimmy Houston and Hank Parker.

Pursuit Channel reaches the largest universe of true HD homes and is active nationally via DIRECTV HD, AT&T HD, DISH Network, Fios by Verizon HD and Centurylink Prism HD, Cox Communication and National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC). Since subscribing to Nielsen for its reporting in January, Pursuit added 4 million households. In addition, PursuitUp is the only outdoor network with a free digital platform featuring VOD of all episodes that previously aired live on the channel. The PursuitUp app can be downloaded on ROKU, Amazon Fire TV, iPhone and Androids.

Final Bassmaster Classic Berth On The Line At Team Championship On Harris Chain

Final Bassmaster Classic Berth On The Line At Team Championship On Harris Chain

LEESBURG, Fla. — The 2018 B.A.S.S. tournament schedule that began in January and crisscrossed the country through 17 states over 10 months will reach its conclusion with the Bassmaster Team Championship on Dec. 5-8 at Florida’s Harris Chain of Lakes.

The event will determine the final berth for the 2019 Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which is scheduled for March 15-17 in Knoxville, Tenn.

Qualified teams from around the globe will compete for two days next week to determine the national team champions. Then the six anglers from the Top 3 teams will fish solo the final two days in the Team Championship Classic Fish-Off, with the winner earning a trip to the Classic.

“It’s a pretty amazing thing to think that you’ll have teams from Arizona, Texas, Ohio — all over the country — and they’ll be competing for a chance to take part in pro fishing’s pinnacle event,” said Clifford Pirch, a Bassmaster Elite Series pro from Arizona who has fished the Classic five times. “I don’t care what part of the country you come from, that’s the deal you’ve always dreamed of being a part of.”

Some competitors will be traveling from other countries. Also competing in the championship are three teams from South Africa and one from Australia. To qualify, two-angler teams representing sanctioned team trails had to finish near the top of their respective circuit’s championship or team of the year race.

Daily takeoffs will be at 6:45 a.m. ET from Ski Beach Park in Leesburg, and weigh-ins will be held at the park each day at 2:45 p.m.

Counting the team qualifier, the Classic field will feature 52 anglers, including Alabama pro Jordan Lee, who receives an automatic berth as the defending champion, and Drew Benton of Florida, who punched his ticket by winning the Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in May.

Seven anglers also qualified through the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens circuit, along with one from the Carhartt College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops, three from the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors, three from the Mossy Oak Fishing Classic Bracket and 35 from the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings.

Pirch finished 28th in the AOY standings to qualify for the Classic for the sixth time. He’s finished in the Top 20 three times at the Classic, including a 13th-place showing at South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell last year.

He’s also had some success on the Harris Chain, where the final berth will be decided. In 2012, he finished second in a Southern Open held on the fishery with a three-day total of 58 pounds, 1 ounce.

“That tournament was in January, and when it actually warmed up, I saw a lot of really big fish,” Pirch said. “Then we had a little hiccup with the weather, had a cold night. So it wasn’t quite as wide open as it could have been.

“But I definitely saw the potential of the place.”

Pirch offered some advice to the anglers taking part in the Team Championship.

“Anywhere in the Southeastern United States this time of year, I would really be looking for that little bit of clearer water and better grass,” he said. “There’s always that zone that seems to be healthier than a lot of other places.

“There are plenty of big fish in those lakes, and if you can find areas like that, you should find some of those fish.”

Pirch said it’s also important for team anglers who may not be used to fishing under such enormous pressure to remember it’s a fishing tournament, just like any other.

“You’re fishing for a Classic berth, and that’s an exciting thing for any angler,” he said. “But in the end, it’s about catching the five biggest fish you can every day. Whatever happens will happen one day at a time.”

Jerking Away the Winter Blues by Bruce Callis

Jerking Away the Winter Blues

[print_link]

Gone are the long days of summer and the shorter days have taken away some of our fishing fun! The weather is getting cooler and the water temperatures are dropping fast it seems. The number of boats on the water decreases as many opt to go hunting or just wait for warmer weather to return. But now is the time that the big hawgs can be found.

While the bass may not be very active, they never stop eating. With the colder water temperatures and gloomy days, bass tend to suspend, making catching them tough at best. While there are many options as to how to catch them, the jerkbait is a great weapon. It can be worked fast or slow and both will achieve their objective.

I know, a lot of people hate them for many reasons. Jerking them all day tires out my arms and shoulder! It is just too slow! I don’t have the patience for it! But the jerkbait can out shine all other baits this time of year. A jerkbait is just another weapon in your arsenal and you need to learn to take it out and use it.

The first decision is the rod. I have heard so many different thoughts about the length and action. Some want a medium heavy rod with a fast tip, because they want the bait to really react when they jerk it. Still, others want a medium action rod especially in the cold water. The medium action rod actually plays into a winter jerkbait bite, allowing you to not overpower the lure while allowing you to keep the bait suspended in one area longer. As to length of the road, it varies. With winter fishing, we put on more clothing, and as such a shorter 6’6” rod can actually work to your advantage. While others opt for a slightly longer rod of 7 foot. The main thing is to use a length that you are comfortable with and still not over power the lure.

To jerk or twitch? And how long do we pause? Yes! The basic retrieve we all are taught is to jerk, jerk, pause. And it works great, but during this time of year, we want to keep the bait in a relatively small area for a longer time to allow the bass to strike it. A jerk can be sudden and create a lot of motion, while a twitch can mimic a dying baitfish much better. A small movement of 8 to 10 inches with the rod tip can be just enough motion to entice a bass into attacking the bait. But since we are fishing suspended bass, our first thought should be to get the jerkbait down to it’s proper work zone. A couple quick turns of the handle should be all we need, then start your retrieve. And always twitch or jerk on a slack line.

There are so many different styles of jerkbaits and so many different manufacturers. And then there are even more custom painters who use a variety of different blanks to create their masterpieces. But we are looking more at two styles of suspending jerkbaits. The first will suspend in the 5 to 7 foot range and the second suspends in the 10-12 foot range. Line size will effect how deep each will dive, with lighter line diameter allowing the lure to run deeper and thicker will keep them higher in the water column. While the bass may be suspended in 15-20 feet of water, a dying baitfish can still draw then in from that far away in clear water.

A lot of attention is given to color and size. We are taught to match the hatch with everything we do. But remember, we are talking winter and cold water fishing. Bass will opt for a quick meal and especially a big easy meal. We can use color to also give the illusion of a size change. An opaque color will make the bait seem larger than it actually is. And a translucent color can make a larger 3 hook jerkbait seem much smaller. So experiment and know that you don’t need to have a hundred different jerkbaits to achieve success.

Cold water and jerkbaits can be one of the most productive set ups for winter time bass fishing. It can also be the bait to change a tough day into an unforgettable one in a hurry. But you have to pull it out and throw it to make it happen. Are you ready to catch some hawgs this time of year?

Picture: Tom Pierce from Blue Ridge, Va. with a nice smallmouth bass caught in November while fishing with Captain Dale Wilson.

OVERVIEW- Fishing should good in the coming weeks! Largemouth bass fishing will be slow month! Water temperature will be in the upper 40’s to lower 50’s. Best times will be early morning, late afternoon & cloudy days. December is a fair month to fish for crappie at Smith Mtn. Lake. The baitfish will be moving into their winter patterns.

Largemouth Bass- Fishing for largemouth bass will be fair this month. Best lures will be jigging spoons, jerk baits, jigs, drop shots, blade baits, Carolina rigs and shaky heads. Deep points, steep rocky areas, humps, ledges and deep docks will be the best areas to try your luck. Best depths will be from 10 to 40 feet deep. Remember to take care of the bass and release them!

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing will be fair. December is one of my favorite months to catch big smallmouth bass at Smith Mtn. lake. Best areas will be humps, ledges and rocky areas. Best lures will be tubes, jigs, jerk baits, hair jigs and blade baits. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Cloudy days with light wind are good times to try your luck! Look for areas with rocky ledges next to deep water. Most smallmouth bass will suspend near schools of baitfish and deep ledges. Smallmouth also feed heavily on crawfish this month.

Striped Bass- Fishing will be good this month. Stripers will be caught in most sections of the lake. Best lures will be swim baits, buck tails and Zoom flukes fished on 3/8 to 3/4 oz. lead heads. Best time to fish is cloudy days, early morning and late afternoon. The best depths will be from the 15 to 60 feet deep. Live bait fished on down lines and planner boards work this month. The stripers will constantly be on the move. Find the largest concentration of shad. Night fishing will be fair this month. Some single stripers will surface this month.

Crappie- Fishing for crappie will be good this month. The best depths will be 10 to 25 ft. deep. Crappie will be found around docks, deep brush piles, and fallen trees. Docks with brush piles are usually good areas that hold crappie. Small live minnows and 1½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/16 to 1/8 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month. Best areas are the main creeks and the upper section of the lake. Very light line helps when crappie fishing.

TIP OF THE Month- A gift certificate for a guided fishing trip is a great idea for the fisherman in your family! Look for fish to move to their winter habitat this month. Try to find the areas with the largest concentration of bait fish. Seagulls will help you find stripers this month. You can also hear reports about local fishing on the website: THE BASS CAST RADIO SHOW & WSLK radio each month. Make sure your running lights are on after dark & wear your life jackets! REMEMBER TO TAKE A KID FISHING! HAVE A “MERRY CHRISTMAS”!!!
