The all new C-Shad from Doomsday Tackle Review by Steve Slayton

0

It was a cold, late fall day in East Tennessee and Bassmaster Elite Series Pro, David Mullins, had been wearing out the smallmouth on Cherokee Lake. As each fish surfaced near the boat, Mullins noticed they were regurgitating juvenile shad that were about 3 inches in length.  Eager to match the hatch, Mullins snapped a photo of the partially digested shad and sent it over to Will Stewart of Doomsday Tackle Company.  Stewart, with an extensive background in designing baits for the Asian lure market, was quick to whip up the first true juvenile shad profile bait to hit the market here in the U.S., the C-Shad 3.2.

The C-Shad 3.2 excels in frigid water temperatures especially when Cherokee rigged. The Cherokee rig, which some refer to as “video game fishing,” is a technique that allows you to utilize your electronics to drop a bait straight down to a school of suspended fish. This style of fishing can be much more accurate than using a drop shot given the same circumstances.

The key to this presentation is a jig head with a 90 degree line tie.  The 90 degree line tie allows the bait to sit perfectly horizontal in the water column. This is a much more realistic imitation of a dying baitfish than a typical nose down descend.

When presenting the C-Shad 3.2 to weary smallmouth, Mullins prefers a 7’0” Medium-Light Doomsday Tackle Co. 47 spinning rod equipped with 7 pound Sunline Sniper fluorocarbon.

The Doomsday C-Shad 3.2 offers a highly realistic and anatomically correct shad profile. Fitted with a strip of high-flash mylar and infused with a healthy dose of scent for an added level of attraction.

Don’t let the C-Shad 3.2’s origin story deter you from using it for other applications either. Alternative techniques include, drop shot, shakey head and even 3-armed finesse A-rigs. Available in a variety of highly detailed, baitfish derived colors, the Doomsday Tackle Co. C-Shad is raising the bar for shad imitation style baits across the world.

FISHING LEAGUE WORLDWIDE ANNOUNCES 2019 FLW TOUR ANGLER ROSTER

FISHING LEAGUE WORLDWIDE ANNOUNCES 2019 FLW TOUR ANGLER ROSTER

[print_link]

MINNEAPOLIS (Nov. 26, 2018) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization, announced today the complete professional angler roster for the upcoming 2019 FLW Tour season, the 24th season of the FLW Tour. The field will be showcased along the 2019 FLW Tour, which features seven regular-season tournaments around the country with competition kicking off at Sam Rayburn Reservoir, Jan. 10-13, in Brookeland, Texas, and culminating with the world championship of bass fishing – the FLW Cup at Lake Hamilton, Aug. 9-11, in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

There was enormous demand to compete on the 2019 FLW Tour, with 210 anglers registering for a slot on the prestigious tournament circuit in its final year of priority registration before switching to a strict qualifying process and a 150-pro field in 2020. To accommodate all anglers earning priority entry through the 2018 FLW Tour, Costa FLW series, T-H Marine BFL All-American, YETI FLW College Fishing National Championship and TBF National Championship plus sponsor entries, the 2019 FLW Tour field will feature 170 pros.

The top award at each qualifier is $125,000 with $300,000 going to the winner of the FLW Cup. Since the final field exceeds the published payout basis of 150 pros, FLW will survey all 170 participating pros to finalize the 2019 payout structure.

The 2019 FLW Tour roster is headlined by a stout contingent of bass-fishing heavyweights, including three-time Angler of the Year (AOY) and 2003 FLW Cup champion David Dudley of Lynchburg, Virginia, 2015 AOY and 2011 FLW Cup champion Scott Martin of Clewiston, Florida, and two-time Angler of the Year Bryan Thrift of Shelby, North Carolina. They’ll be joined by bass-fishing legends Jimmy Houston of Cookson, Oklahoma, and Larry Nixon of Quitman, Arkansas, as well as three former FLW Cup champions – John Cox (2016), Brad Knight (2015) and Darrel Robertson (2002). James Niggemeyer of Van, Texas, the 2019 FLW Cup runner-up, and rising star Luke Dunkin of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, are also among the top contenders for 2019. The 2019 Tour will also feature 34 rookies from around the country.

“With the demand we saw this year to join the FLW Tour, we couldn’t be more eager to kick off another season at Sam Rayburn Reservoir in January,” said Bill Taylor, FLW’s Senior Director of Tournament Operations. “FLW has long been the home to some of the most decorated bass anglers in the sport, and with the expanded live coverage at all of our Tour events this year, we are more than ready to show off their skills at some of the best fisheries in the world.”

In FLW Tour competition anglers are vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2019 FLW Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. The 2019 FLW Cup will be held on Lake Hamilton and is being hosted by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and Visit Hot Springs.

3 Tips for Catching Bass Before Winter – MTB

3 Tips for Catching Bass Before Winter

[print_link]

Catching bass before winter settles is a challenge. Cool temps, lethargic fish, and limited bait options are a few added challenges that anglers in the North deal with. So, if you are one of the lucky fishermen who live in a state where the water freezes in the winter. This article is for you. If you aren’t, mazeltov; every fisherman in the Midwest is likely (at least somewhat) jealous of you. If you are, I am sure you want to prolong the cabin fever for as long as possible. So, you layer up, put on the wool socks and a stash a few hand warmers in your pockets. Time to go fishing! But where do you start? If you follow the three tips below you will undoubtedly put more trophy bass in the boat this fall.

1. Timing For Catching Bass Before Winter

Catching Bass Before Winter

When you go fishing, you want to make the hours you spend on the water count. This couldn’t be truer for this time of the year. The beauty of fishing in the late fall is it is better to go fishing during the middle of the day when the sun and temperature are at their highest. This ensures the water is the warmest it will be all day and gives the bass a chance to warm up. Typically 11 or 12-noon are a good time to start fishing.

Additionally, keep an eye on your favorite weather app (I love Weather Underground) for the forecast. During the late fall, even one afternoon of low 60-degree air temperatures can make the fish bite like crazy. Typically, the best late fall fishing days are surrounded by days with highs of low to mid-40s. So, while impromptu fishing trips can be fun, it pays to plan in the fall.

2. Go Big When Catching Bass Before Winter

Catching Bass Before Winter

Big baits catch big fish. You’ve probably heard this too many times in your fishing days. However, it remains true, particularly in fall when bass are preparing for winter. Fish know hardwater is not far off and once the ice forms a bass’ metabolism slows down, enabling them to eat less often. During this late fall period, bass want to make their energy count. Instead of chasing numerous smaller meals they would much prefer to chase one larger meal. Large profile baits like spinnerbaits and bulky jigs are go-to’s for this time of year.

3. Go Slow To Catch Bass Before Winter

This goes along with “going big” when it comes to late fall lure presentations. Because bass want to optimize their energy spent on a larger meal, they would prefer these large meals move slowly. A big meal moving slowly equals a happy trophy largemouth. Again, baits like spinnerbaits and jigs are perfect because they can be fished super slow and maintain a large profile. Try slow-rolling a spinnerbait on the tops of existing green vegetation. The key this time of year is being able to make slight contact with fish-holding cover like weeds, rock, timber, and docks. These slower presentations allow the angler to keep the bait in the strike zone longer and increase their chances of getting bit.

How To Use Grass To Catch GIANT Fall Bass

Fishing fall grass is may seem unusual but weeds are wonderful spots to search for bass when the leaves on the trees and aquatic vegetation start turning brown. Weeds dying in the fall causes oxygen depletion in some areas that can lead to poor fishing, but some dead vegetation can be just as good as the green stuff. Some of the backwater areas when the weeds are dying will have some pH problems, but that will not be in the issue out on the main lake where there is current. So you can concentrate on fishing weeds until the water temperature falls into the low 50s.

Fishing Fall Grass: Creeks Vs Flats

Bass tend to go to the weeds in the backs of creeks in the fall but if there is good ample cover on the main lake you can still catch them there. The type of lake determines where the best weed action will be in the fall. Baitfish will migrate to the shallow weeds on lakes with main lake flats, but on deep reservoirs, the biggest concentration of baitfish activity will be in the vegetation at the backs of creeks.

Whereas in the summer bass hold in deeper weeds or in the shade of thick vegetation, autumn’s cooler weather allows the bass to roam freely through the weeds at all depths. So you can catch fish from the surface to 10 feet deep in the vegetation because the water temperature starts to get the same throughout the water column. You need to vary the depth by the day and location that you are fishing because the fish will get a little higher up in the weeds in the fall with the cooler water.

Fishing Fall Grass: Transition Periods

How To Fish A Texas Rig

During the summer to fall transition, a 1-ounce jig works best when the water is still warm and you need to punch a lure through the matted grass. If the weeds are sparse, switch to a 1/2-ounce jig for flipping around the weed edges.

Aquatic vegetation that has been growing all summer reaches its high point in the fall and bass tend to suspend in the weeds then. A 1/2-ounce buzz bait is a primary lure for coaxing suspended bass from the weeds. If you see a lot of surface activity in the vegetation, buzz a hollow-bodied frog across the top of the weeds. Spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits are also good choices for running through weeds.

3 Must-Know Tips For Fishing Medium Depth Crankbaits – MTB

3 Must-Know Tips For Fishing Medium Depth Crankbaits

[print_link]

Let’s face it. mid depth-crankbaits are an awesome way to catch big ‘ole bass. But there are some subtle nuances of these baits which can make or break a trip on the water. This couldn’t be truer than when it comes to mid-depth crankbaits. These cranks are typically used in transitional periods when bass are making their way either to or from deep or shallow water. Try following these tips to put more bass in the boat using mid-depth crankbaits:

1. Mid-Depth Crankbaits: When In Doubt, Go Deeper

Mid-Depth Crankbaits

It’s a common misconception that if you want to fish “x” feet of water, you throw a crankbait that dives exactly “x” feet. In fact, in most cases, this couldn’t be further from the truth. If an angler finds the bass are biting in eight feet of water, for example, that angler should choose a crankbait that dives marginally deeper than the desired depth zone. This causes the crankbait to dive into the bottom and “hunt“, or appear to scour the bottom like a fleeing baitfish. This tactic also causes the crankbait to kick up silt, dirt, and microorganisms, leaving behind a trail of visual distress that is irresistible to bass.

2. Mid-Depth Crankbaits: Size Matters

Line size is often overlooked when it comes to fishing mid-depth cranks. This can be a big mistake. By experimenting with your line size, an angler can achieve the perfect running depth coupled with the perfect action. The thinner the line diameter (smaller pound test) you choose for fishing your mid-depth crankbaits, the deeper they typically run. Crankbait fishermen typically use anywhere from 10-14-pound test line to achieve the desired combo of action and depth. In some extreme circumstances, anglers will use lighter or heavier line for mid-depth crankbaits, however. A good rule of thumb is to start with 12-pound test fluorocarbon fishing line and go heavier or lighter depending upon depth. Also, remember that a lighter line will increase your casting distance.

3. Mid-Depth Crankbaits: Fast And Furious

Mid-Depth Crankbaits

Ya ever heard of Kevin Vandam? I thought you might have. Vandam arguably has won more money fishing crankbaits than any other bass angler. His key to success? Speed. Watch any number of crankbait fishing videos of Kevin on YouTube and you will notice this common denominator.

Vandam fishes very fast and covers lots of water, and trigger many strikes with his feverish reeling. The idea behind this is to put your bait in front of as many fish as possible while not giving them the opportunity to think about or analyze your bait. Oftentimes, their instinctive nature presents itself and forces them to bite so a prospective meal won’t get away.

Mid-depth crankbait can be difficult and frustrating, particularly when the bite is at the mid-depth range. However, it doesn’t have to be. If you implement these three tips the next time you are on the water and continue to experiment with these crankbaits on your own, you will put more fish in the boat.
