Being Thankful For Everything

[print_link]

Tis’ the season. As we come to the table to be with family and friends on this Thanksgiving, we give thanks. We give thanks for the food, for our family, and our friends. We then dive in and stuff ourselves on turkey, ham, and everything that goes with them, hopefully leaving room for some of that homemade apple pie. And then when the meal is done, we all head back to our homes. But what are we truly thankful for on this day?

I am thankful for my loving family. We may not be perfect, but we care for and love each other fully. I am thankful for my friends. God has given me the rare opportunity to get to know so many people through fishing. Some are great friends who would do anything to help you, even though we have never actually met in person. And some have become as close as family, no, rather they are family. In an instant they would be there for you, helping in every way possible. Social media with all it’s problems has done so much to bring people together. I am thankful for the people who share the same beliefs as I do. We may not agree on everything, but we lift and learn from each other. I am thankful for the basic things, like the roof over my head, for the food that I have, and for the heat on a winter’s night.

But so often we forget the little things that we need to be thankful for in our life. For the laughter that a friend brought that lifted me out of a miserable day. For the door that someone held so I could get inside safely. For the kind words of encouragement when I thought I could not go on. For the children that remind us that life is short and that we need to always be young at heart and enjoy each day fully. For the true laughter that a child brings each and every day. For the being able to make someone laugh when they didn’t know they needed it.
Within the fishing industry, I am thankful for all the anglers that have become friends and mentors. I am thankful for the professional anglers that take the time to teach others and myself about how to be the best I can be on the water, and how I can be a better person.

I am not perfect by no means, and granted, they are not either. But it’s knowing that being perfect is a goal to strive for in this life. Perfect in that you give more than you could ever imagine. What to us could be nothing, could mean the world to someone else. Perfect as in helping a child learn to enjoy nature and respect it as much as we do. Perfect as in caring about others. We show it in so many ways, sometimes we don’t even know we are making a difference. And do we really need to know that we did?

I am truly blessed in my life. I am by no means rich, for money is often short, but I am rich in friends and family. I have the most amazing friends! I have been given the opportunity to make a difference in so many lives. And so many have made a difference in mine. From the young man who graduated high school, fishing and GOD has changed me for the better. I see that young man and want to tell him what is wrong and how to correct it, but then I may change who I am now. I may find that I have become someone I may never want to be. But that shy young man, who hated writing, and who hated speaking, especially in public, changed with the people he met in life. He became more and is living life rather than going through it.

I am truly blessed and thankful! What are you thankful for in this life? And where will it lead your future?

Mike Langford of Yadkinville, NC won the American Fishing Tour division 14 tournament on High Rock Lake in Lexington, NC with five-fish weighing 10.70-pounds held on 11/10/2018. It was a cold morning on High Rock Lake with temperatures in the low 30’s and winds out of the NNE at 5 to 10 mph. Temperatures topped out in the low 50’s with winds out of the NNE at 10 to 15 mph.  Water conditions had been up and down throughout the week with heavy rains early in the week.  Most of the lake was heavily stained and there was lots of debris coming down the lake.  Water temps were in the low 60’s to upper 50’s.  A field of 17 anglers turned out to compete for their opportunity to win.

Mike Langford of Yadkinville, NC fished a Shane’s Baits A-rig with 3.8” Kietech swimbaits to sort through a large number of fish to round out his 5-fish limit.  His efforts earned him some valuable points, and a nice payday worth, $478.00.  Less than a pound behind him was Lance Eckford of Troutman, NC with two-fish weighing in at 10.28-pounds, worth $268.00.  An additional $75.00 also went to Lance with a big bass weighing in at 5.68-pounds. Jarred Pharr of Mint Hilll, NC took third place worth $86.00 with four-fish weighing in at 8.57-pounds.

Among the winners was the 2017 Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Forrest Wood Cup in Columbia, South Carolina, hosted by the Capital City/Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism Board, and the 2018 FLW Cup in Hot Springs, Arkansas, hosted by Visit Hot Springs and the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism. Other winners include the 2018 NCAA Final Four in San Antonio, Texas, the 2018 NFL Draft in Dallas, Texas, and the PGA’s Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The event, which took place August 11-13, 2017, aired on NBC Sports, the Outdoor Channel and the World Fishing Network and was broadcast to more than 564 million households internationally, resulting in excellent exposure for both the destination and the event itself, as well as the sport of bass fishing as a whole. The three-day event benefitted youth fishing and additionally showcased regional barbecue chefs. According to the Capital City/Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism Board the average visitor spend was tracked at $304.12 per person. More than 68,000 spectators attended this event.

The event was such a success that FLW announced Hot Springs will host the event again in 2019 – this time on Lake Hamilton – making it the first city to host back-to-back Cups in the FLW Tour’s history.

“We were excited at the news that the FLW Cup was honored by Sports Destination Management,” said Steve Arrison, CEO of Visit Hot Springs. “It was a great event put on by a class organization. A new angler or team will be featured in each episode.

“We are extremely excited to partner with FLW and showcase the talented young bass anglers that compete at the high school and college levels,” said Matt Jensen – Director of Marketing for Rapala USA. “We know that there are some unique, compelling stories that are waiting to be told and after the success of FLW’s Circuit Breaker series we are eager to see what the talented production team at FLW can come up with. How to Winterize A Boat: Putting It Away The Right Way

[print_link]

Knowing how to winterize your boat can save you time and cash. It’s the end of the fishing season and time to put the boat away. But there is that one little thing you know you need to do, but never really understood: winterizing. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. In reality, not many boaters know what it is or what it entails. To be honest, it varies depending upon personal preference and your specific boat. This article should give you a little better idea of what the process is all about.

How To Winterize A Boat: Leave It To The Pros

Most people don’t want to deal with the headache of doing it themselves. Luckily, there are plenty of marine dealerships and smaller shops that perform this service and it isn’t too spendy. So, if you don’t know what you are doing and don’t care to try, shell out the cash and have it done for you.

How To Winterize A Boat By Yourself

Be Knowledgeable

Know what you are doing before you do it. Don’t know? Check Google and YouTube. Everything you need to know is already available for free online.

Water is Bad

Make sure your boat is drained from any and all water. This doesn’t just include the lower unit of your motor. Elevate the front wheel jack as high as possible to pull the water downhill and out your rear drain. Next, tilt your motor all the water down to ensure all the water is drained.

Change Oil Annually

Check the oil color when draining. Black oil is a bad sign. Consider changing it more often if this is the case with your motor. Milky oil can indicate a bad seal on the screw where you insert the lower unit oil. Check this seal and make sure it isn’t cracked or stuck to the screw. Silver flakey oil isn’t necessarily bad but should be considered depending upon how much metal is in the oil. Brand new motors will have some amount of metal shards in the oil as the motor is broken in. Too much metal (especially larger chunks) is a bad sign. Take your motor to the shop. Give your motor time to drain completely. Let the motor sit for an hour or two while all the oil in the lower unit is drained

Next, refill with new marine grade lower unit oil (check YouTube on how to do this if you are unsure) and make sure seals are good and snug. Check online or your motor’s user manual for the proper oil.

4-Stroke Motor?

Use correct marine grade oil and replace the oil filter annually as well. Use your finger to lube the rubber rim and threads of the filter with new oil before placing on your motor. This ensures a solid seal and that the filter is easily removed next year.

Fog (Optional)

Some boaters swear by fogging. Some never do it. It is certainly a topic of debate but it certainly can’t hurt when considering motor maintenance. Again, look at YouTube for your specific model and year motor and choose a popular fogging product. There are many on the market.

Mouse Problems?

Do you have mouse problems where you store your boat? Dryer sheets work wonders. Also, make sure to remove rods, plastic bags, life jackets, or anything that is easily chewed by a mouse. If you do have mouse issues, then at least they won’t have anything to feast on.

This is by no means a comprehensive winterization list, but it’s a good start. As a boater, your best bet is almost always to take it to a professional or someone you trust to winterize. You want your bass boat to work when you need it, so take care of it during the winter months and it will take care of you when you need it to.
