The Good, the Bad, and Getting Ugly

By Bruce Callis

[print_link]

The bass fishing competition has changed so much in the last few years. With the exciting new television show, Major League Fishing, people have gotten to experience competitive bass fishing at a different level. And as the Professional leagues came to a close, the industry again shook, as a new league was announced that would start competing against the established BASS and FLW leagues. But with the announcement came turmoil. Turmoil among anglers and turmoil among fans.

The new MLF Bass Pro Tour was the brain child of Boyd Duckett and Gary Klein, but there are other anglers who have a finical investment in the league. They would send out 80 invitations to existing professional anglers from both BASS and FLW. There was no mention of how the first 80 anglers were selected, nor were the 80 named. We knew that once the 80 had made their decision, further invitations would be handed out. And this started the talk on social media. Who would the first 80 be, how were they selected, and it started to get ugly right away. People started to decide which league would be best, and many had decided that the new league would be the best simply because of who may be fishing it.

And then we sat and waited for the announcement of who would be switching, who declined the offer, and who did not get an invite. Fans argued about it. Then slowly anglers started to make their announcement on their chosen social media sites. Some stated that they were going to go to MLF BPT in 2019, some made announcements that they were staying put in 2019, and some complained about not being invited. Others drug out the decision until the last moment. But finally, the field was set.

Big names within both tours changed, and the fans argued that the other leagues would fold because of their angler losses. But still, everyone was basing these decisions not on facts, but assumptions of how the new league would be run. We had not been told how the tournaments would be run or how we the fan would be involved in the events. All we knew was that the promise of big rewards fueled the decisions or was it something more.

After Mike Iaconelli had all the leagues on his IKE Live Show, some questions were answered, but as a fan of bass fishing I was left scratching my head. The answers seemed scripted to entice a favorable response from the fans, but so many questions still remained unanswered or the answer was fuzzy. But the fans that follow bass fishing are still talking and wondering.

The high road is to say that we should support all three professional tours. But in reality, that is not what is happening. Fans are picking. Picking the new league based on what the television show offers. Others are dismissing it because of the same reason and staying with the established leagues. Who wants to watch a dinkfest, you are going to see all the action from every angler for free, you are going to have to pay to watch everything, the best anglers in the world are now all in one league, to why weren’t the top 80 anglers in the world not the first to be invited. It is enough to turn fans off to bass fishing all together.

The bass fishing industry can support 3 leagues. Until those big names proved themselves, they were the young guns. Right now, 80 new young guns will be entering 2019 with the dreams that the departing 80 held. The 2019 year hasn’t started, but until it does, let’s not be ugly. If MLF BPT is to survive, it has to prove itself from the start. We can and should continue to support the anglers who make a living doing what we love. We can and should continue to support the established leagues while supporting the new league. Only time will tell. Don’t be ugly!

Opening of New Lab to Train Technicians

[print_link]

Sturtevant, Wis., October 10, 2018 – Gateway Technical College and Evinrude announced today an official opening of the BRP Evinrude Technology Institute. The event will be held at 10 a.m. October 15, 2018 in Room T107 of the college’s Technical Building on its Racine Campus, 929 Lake Avenue. The public is invited to attend this event, which will include a short presentation and tours of the lab.

There’s a need for qualified technicians in the motorcycle, marine and outdoor power products industry, and the lab features the many modern engines, outboard motors, motorcycles, personal watercraft and other equipment students can train on to become proficient in the skills needed for them to succeed in their career.

Evinrude and BRP contributed the many different pieces of equipment as well as brought industry knowledge to ensure the lab provided cutting-edge technology and curriculum for this in-demand career field.

“The marine industry needs young, talented technicians,” said Tracy Crocker, senior vice president and general manager of Evinrude and president of the BRP Marine Group. “There is a lack of awareness of the ample opportunities in our field that Evinrude’s new partnership with Gateway will help to address.

“Through the BRP Evinrude Technology Institute, students will not only develop a better understanding of the array of career options available to technicians but will develop the necessary skills to help them succeed as marine technicians,” continued Crocker. “Our goal is to help solve our technician shortage while also creating more jobs and contributing more to the local economy.”

“We are excited to partner with Evinrude to build a skilled workforce for the marine and outdoor power technician industry,” said Bryan Albrect, president and CEO, Gateway Technical College. “The advanced technical skills need to repair today’s outdoor power equipment is dependent on partnerships to support our students with technical expertise, equipment and career opportunities.”

“There’s an enormous need for professional in this industry and Evinrude helped make sure we were able to provide this new program through industry knowledge, equipment and donating resources toward a related scholarship,” said Joe Fullington, dean of the School of Business and Transportation, Gateway Technical College. “Evinrude has helped create a solid future for students in this career field and made sure this program is successful in many ways. I don’t think we could have launched this program without their partnership.”

Students in Gateway’s Motorcycle, Marine and Outdoor Power Service Technician technical diploma program will train in the lab. Service technicians in this field maintain, diagnose, and repair two- and four-stroke engines, hydraulics, outboard and inboard engines and transmissions. Engines include those such as boat motors, motorcycles, ATVs, boats and personal watercraft.

5 Fall Fishing Baits To Help You Catch A Giant Bass – MTB

5 Fall Fishing Baits To Help You Catch A Giant Bass

[print_link]

We’ve broken down the top fall bass baits to help you catch more fish this season. The fall is a special time of year to be both in the woods or on the water. While many of us have our minds on football or hunting season, the fall months are also a great time to be spent on the water chasing big bass.

The fall transition may begin and end at different times, depending on where you call home, but there is no doubt these 5 baits will work for all of us as temperatures begin to drop. Maximize your time on the water this fall by using our favorite 5 fall baits.

1. Best Fall Bass Baits: Crankbaits

Best Fall Bass Baits

Shop Crankbaits!

Crankbaits come in an endless amount of shapes and sizes, but there are a certain few that really shine during the fall. Bass will push up shallow as the season progresses and become hungrier as autumn begins to settle in. Having a square bill crankbait to cover water and resemble forage is a great tool for this time of year. Look for cover and deflect your lure off bass hangouts likes wood, brush, and rock. As shad and baitfish populations congregate in the shallows, try throwing minnow, shad, and sunfish patterns for best results.

In addition to shallow diving crankbaits, a lipless crankbait is another great option, especially in the late fall. The tight shimmy action is deadly in cool water and will often get bit when a wide swinging crank will not. Fishing lipless cranks shallow on windy days is always a safe bet, especially when you find grass.

2. Best Fall Bass Baits: Jigs

Best Fall Bass Baits

Shop Jigs!

Jigs will catch fish all year long, and they seem to especially crush during the fall months.  While there are specialty jigs that work well for specific techniques, a true all around jig is usually my top choice during this time of year. A hybrid jig that can be worked through grass, around cover, and even off structure if need be is a good ‘all around’ choice.  Try dragging, hopping, and slowly swimming your jig around areas you think the big ones play, and you’ve got a good chance at catching a fall mega.

3. Best Fall Bass Baits: Spinnerbait

Best Fall Bass Baits

Shop Spinnerbaits!

A spinnerbait is classic fall bait which works at a variety of speeds, depths and water types making it an easy choice for our Top 5 fall baits! The two most common spinnerbait blades are Willow and Colorado Blades, both of which will work during the fall. Banging spinnerbaits off docks, wood, and other cover helps trigger bites throughout the fall months. When fishing in open water, give your spinnerbait twitches and pops to create some irregularity in your retrieve. A subtle change in speed, direction, or look can help illicit strikes.

4. Best Fall Bass Baits: Jerkbaits

Best Fall Bass Baits

Shop Jerkbaits!

Cold water bass fishing wouldn’t be the same without suspending jerkbaits. The shape, cadence, and action are very effective as the weather begins to drop and leaves start to turn. Once the acorns start falling from Oak trees, you know that JerkbaitSZN has started. Bust out your favorite jerkbait and start crushing green and brown ones! The traditional ‘twitch, twitch pause’ retrieve will work most of the time, but try experimenting with speed and pause lengths if you notice fish not fully committing. Don’t be afraid to really rip your jerkbait hard in the fall, the added flash and distance created will often almost force the fish into eating. It gives them less time to make a decision, which can create reaction bites.

5. Best Fall Bass Baits: Finesse Worm

Best Fall Bass Baits

Shop Finesse Worms!

A savvy angler won’t leave the dock without a finesse worm at all times, and this is especially true during the fall period. Finesse worms can be rigged and worked in so many ways it’s easy to understand why they make the list, simply based on it’s  versatility.

If you come across a tough fall bite, a finesse worm wacky rigged or on a drop shot may turn into your new best friend and one of your favorite fall baits. Finesse worms will help you fish an area thoroughly and trigger extra bites when things are tough.
