Bassmaster Opens Schedule For 2019 Is Filled With Big-Time Bass Fishing Venues

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A selection of tournament bass anglers’ dream lakes are in the lineup for the 2019 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens Series, B.A.S.S. announced.

The Opens Series will again feature nine tournaments, including two divisions of four tournaments each and a year-end championship. Opens provide the primary route for aspiring bass anglers to qualify for the prestigious Bassmaster Elite Series, and again in 2019, they will provide top Opens anglers a chance to earn berths in the 2020 Bassmaster Classic.

The Eastern Division will kick off Jan. 24-26 on the Harris Chain of Lakes in Leesburg, Fla., one of the most popular tournament lakes in Florida.

The focus then switches to the Central Division, which begins with an Open on world-famous Toledo Bend Reservoir in Many, La., Feb. 20-22 (a WednesdayFriday event). The “Bend” shootout  is followed by a trip to Alabama’s Smith Lake — a deep, clear lake on the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River that is considered one of the top spotted bass fisheries in the United States — on April 25-27.

“Just by the way the schedule starts, you can tell it’s going to be a great year for the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens,” said Chris Bowes, tournament director for the Opens circuit. “Right off the bat, we make trips to Harris Chain, Toledo Bend and Smith — and I know all three of those are fisheries that are going to get bass anglers fired up.”

From there, the schedule shifts back to the Eastern Division with a May 23-25 event on the Florida-strain largemouth paradise of Lake Chickamauga in Dayton, Tenn., and a July 25-27 trip to the tidal waters of the James River in Richmond, Va.

Each division includes at least one trip to smallmouth country. Eastern Opens competitors will wrap up that division at Oneida Lake at Syracuse, N.Y., Sept. 5-7. Those in the central region will enjoy a break from summer heat Aug. 1-3 on the upper Mississippi River at La Crosse, Wis., before heading south to Grove, Okla., and a Sept. 12-14 contest on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees.

“We just couldn’t be happier about the schedule we’ve put together for 2019,” Bowes said. “It has a little bit of everything. We’ve got a Florida tournament early in the season, which is always good, a couple of largemouth slugfests, a couple of smallmouth slugfests — something for everybody.”

The 2019 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens Championship will be held at a site and date to be announced later, and it will have a profound effect on the year to follow in professional bass fishing. The field will include the eight winners of Opens tournaments as well as the Top 10 in points standings from each division, not including the winners, for a total of 28 pro anglers and 28 co-anglers.

“The Opens Championship and other changes introduced this year have helped generate additional excitement about the Opens and the race to qualify for the championship, and we believe they will have a positive effect on the Classic and Elite Series fields, as well,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “There were many people who believed that qualifying for the Classic and the Elites should be more difficult than winning one event or performing well in three Opens. This new format ensures that will happen.”

Registration for the 2019 Bassmaster Opens Series will begin Tuesday, Oct. 30. For more information on the full schedule, along with rules, format and payouts, visit bassmaster.com/open.

Final Bassmaster Central Open Of The Season Set For Logan Martin Lake

[print_link]

PELL CITY, Ala. — By Tuesday morning, the waters of Logan Martin Lake will likely be as calm as they’ve been in months.

With Labor Day weekend over, most of the ski boats and party barges the lake is known for during the summer months will have been put away until next year — and that should make the timing just right for the more than 280 anglers taking part in the final Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open of the season.

The tournament is scheduled for Sept. 6-8, with takeoffs at 6:15 a.m. CT each day from Lakeside Park in Pell City. Weigh-ins the first two days will also be held at 2:15 p.m. at Lakeside Park, but the final-day weigh-in will be held at 3 p.m. at the Bass Pro Shops in Leeds, Ala.

“Logan Martin is loaded with 14- and 15-inch spotted bass,” said Jesse Wiggins, an Alabama pro who fishes the Bassmaster Elite Series. “There will be a ton of them caught, and probably a lot of different ways. You may even see some schooling.”

The key, Wiggins said, will be landing a few big fish — most likely largemouth bass — to anchor a daily limit.

“You’re going to see a lot of fishing going on around the brushpiles,” Wiggins said. “There’s a lot of tournament fishing on that lake, and the guys who have a lot of experience on the lake will know some places that have some juice.

“I think it’ll be really hard for somebody who doesn’t know the lake to come in and beat guys like that.”

One possible X factor Wiggins pointed to is the tailrace area at the far northern reaches of the lake below Neely Henry Dam. It’s about a 50-minute run by boat from the takeoff point at Lakeside Park — and there are times when it pays off quickly.

“I’ve seen people pull up on places like that and catch all the weight they need in five casts,” Wiggins said. “If you can get on a certain spot where most of the fish are, it can happen just that fast.

“It can be a little dicey getting up there, and it can be crowded sometimes. But it’s a chance that’s definitely worth taking if you’re not on anything in the main lake.”

Wiggins said a crankbait and a jig would be his first choices for a good tailrace bite. But no matter how the fish are caught, he expects 15 to 16 pounds a day to put an angler in the running for a win.
“If the tournament were happening a few weeks later after a good cool snap, I think it would take more,” Wiggins said. “But you’re probably going to be looking at a tough bite, and I would feel good with about 15 pounds a day — possibly even 14.”

Besides cash and prizes, anglers will be competing for a chance to take part in the upcoming Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens Championship, which is scheduled for Oct. 18-20 at Table Rock Lake in Missouri. The championship field will include the winners of the four Central Opens, winners from the four Eastern Opens and the Top 10 in season points standings from each division.

The Opens Championship winner and the Top 5 in performance points from each division — determined by an angler’s finish in all four divisional tournaments and the championship — will be invited to fish the Bassmaster Elite Series. The winner of the championship and the Top 3 anglers in points from each division following the championship will be invited to the 2019 Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

FLW & WHITE RIVER MARINE GROUP ANNOUNCE EXPANSION OF GLOBAL BOAT PARTNERSHIP

FLW & WHITE RIVER MARINE GROUP ANNOUNCE EXPANSION OF GLOBAL BOAT PARTNERSHIP

[print_link]

MINNEAPOLIS (Aug. 29, 2018) – In a move unprecedented in Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) history, the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization announced today that White River Marine Group, the world’s largest manufacturer of fishing and recreational boats – including longtime FLW partner Ranger Boats plus Nitro and Triton Boats – has extended and expanded its exclusive boat sponsorship with the company. FLW will now showcase all three boat brands across their multiple media channels and premier tournament trails. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

FLW and Ranger Boats have enjoyed the longest-running boat sponsor relationship in the sport, with a history that dates back to FLW’s formative years in the early 1980s as Operation Bass.

The acquisition of Ranger Boats by the White River Marine Group in 2014 has enabled the growth of the 30+ year partnership with FLW, as multiple internationally-recognized boat brands are housed under the White River Marine Group umbrella. Ranger Boats will remain the featured and official boat of FLW, with Nitro and Triton Boats now added to the tournament organization’s impressive sponsorship lineup

“Ranger Boats has collectively served as the boat choice of FLW and the overwhelming majority of our anglers and fans for more than 30 years,” said FLW President of Marketing Trish Blake. “FLW is thrilled to announce that we are now expanding upon that partnership, a reflection of the great value of and influence of FLW and our anglers on the boating market.

“The relationship with White River Marine Group has allowed us to seamlessly add the Nitro and Triton Boat brands to our sponsorship portfolio while still allowing Ranger Boats to remain an integral part of the fabric of FLW and the sport of professional bass fishing. We look forward to building on this partnership for many years to come.”

The Ranger, Nitro and Triton boat brands will all be prominently featured at FLW-sanctioned tournaments and outdoor expos, including interactive booth space and boating displays at designated events. The brands will be promoted through exclusive content and giveaways across FLW’s multiple media platforms including FLWFishing.com, FLW social media channels, FLW Bass Fishing magazine and the Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show. Ranger Boats will continue to offer its lucrative Ranger Cup contingency program, offering Ranger owners additional valuable awards in FLW tournaments, while Nitro and Triton Boats will also present contingency programs for FLW anglers. For the latest information regarding contingency payouts in FLW competition, visit FLWFishing.com.

“We are very excited to expand our partnership with FLW,” said noted conservationist and White River Marine Group founder Johnny Morris. “Beyond connecting our iconic boat brands with passionate anglers, FLW’s tournaments promote the sport of fishing on a global scale and align with our conservation vision to help introduce new audiences to the great outdoors.”

White River Marine Group is the exclusive boat sponsor across all of FLW’s media platforms, including tournaments and Expos, websites, social media, FLW Bass Fishing magazine and the “FLW” television show. Shallow Summer Hot Water Fishing – MTB

Shallow Summer Hot Water Fishing

[print_link]

Shallow summer fishing around matted aquatic vegetation is probably the easiest spot to find bass on any given lake, but it is also the toughest cover to penetrate and haul out bass from their weedy hideouts.

You can catch bass from grass year-round, but the best time to target bass in hydrilla and milfoil is from the dog days of summer throughout the fall.  The grass is thickest then so it allows more bass to congregate under the mats.

Weather Changes And Shallow Summer Fishing

shallow summer fishing

Weather plays a key role in where bass position in the matted vegetation during the dog days. If it is cloudy or windy, the fish will hold loosely on the edge of the weeds where they are more susceptible to action lures such as spinnerbaits, crankbaits and bladed jigs.  Calm, sunny weather is preferred for flipping and pitching to bass congregating in the thickest part of the mats.

Openings in the mats, indentions and any irregular features in the grass are ideal targets for flipping and pitching. However punching bass baits through the thickest part of the mat produces best since novice anglers tend to shy away from these spots and fish the holes in the grass.

Shallow Summer Fishing In The Mats

shallow summer fishing

You can penetrate the mats with a 3/4- to 1 1/4-ounce jig with a plastic craw trailer.  You can also use a plastic craw or other soft plastics on a Texas rig if you want to give bass a different look in weeds receiving heavy fishing pressure.

Pitch your jig or Texas-rigged soft plastic bait on a 7-foot, 9-inch heavy-action rod rather than a standard 7 1/2-inch flipping stick to get more leverage when trying to get a bass out of the grass.  Your line choice for pitching in the weeds should be 50- to 60-pound braid in low visibility green.

After punching your jig through the mat, let it fall quickly to the bottom.  Try to let the bait fall vertically uninhibited by your rod or reel. Once it gets to the bottom take up the slack and then lift it up to see if it feels like whatever size weight you are using at that time. If it feels too heavy set the hook because it is probably a fish on the line. If it feels normal,  work the jig up and down until you establish where the fish are located, whether it’s high right below the canopy of weeds or down on the bottom.

ANGLER Hits the Mark with Innovative New Bullseye Fishing Tracker

ANGLER Hits the Mark with Innovative New Bullseye Fishing Tracker

Connected Tech and App Make Fish Tracking as Simple as the Push of a Button
[print_link]
Pittsburgh, Penn. (August 29, 2018) – ANGLR, a tech company making waves in the fishing industry, announced today its innovative new fishing trip tracking system using Bullseye. A Bluetooth-enabled button that can be affixed to a boat or person, Bullseye allows users to effortlessly record fishing data with the click of a finger without needing to access navigation displays, logbooks or mobile devices. Redefining mobility and reliability, ANGLR removes the guesswork from a day on the water.

Designed to clip, stick or attach to almost anything, Bullseye builds fishing intelligence without interrupting the fishing experience. Once connected to the free ANGLR app, users can quickly and easily capture key fishing data; one click records catch locations along with weather, water and other key details, and two clicks marks a waypoint at the user’s current location. Cellular data is not required for use. Recorded trips, statistics, and coordinates are conveniently accessed through user profiles on the FREE mobile or web applications.

Each click of the Bullseye button allows the ANGLR app to provide trends and patterns related to the best days and times to fish, wind and water conditions, temperatures, GPS locations, moon phases, barometric pressure and more. Because ANGLR recognizes the importance of a secret fishing spot, all collected data is stored securely and remains completely private by default. Anglers can simply preserve a record of their own story for personal enjoyment or tap into the ANGLR online community to share details on their own terms.

“We’re a team of technologists, designers and engineers who love fishing, and these passions drove us to create Bullseye,” said Nicholas Wilson, CEO, ANGLR. “Our goal is applying technology to enable outdoor adventure and add depth to the experience without detracting from time spent out on the water.”

Built for the water, Bullseye is rugged, lightweight, weatherproof and clips to anything—making it perfect whether deep sea fishing the canyons, fly fishing mountain streams or ice fishing northern lakes. Its 2-year battery life ensures continuous, reliable recording of catches & waypoints. The ANGLR app is also compatible with additional Bluetooth accessories, like the ANGLR Tracker —the world’s only rod-mounted fishing sensor capable of recording casts, hook sets and more.

Bullseye is available for purchase from ANGLR for $29.99. The ANGLR app is available as a free download from the Apple App Store or Google Play. For more information please visit www.anglr.com.

Neko Hooks Help Palaniuk, Feider to Top 10 Finishes in NY Bassmaster derby – RAPALA

0
[print_link]

In a tournament in which landing huge smallmouth bass was harder than finding and catching them, Rapala® Pros Brandon Palaniuk and Seth Feider enjoyed an advantage over the competition by arming their drop-shot rigs with VMC® Neko Hooks. That edge helped them place 7th and 10th, respectively, competing against 107 of the world’s best bass fishermen on the crystal-clear waters of the St. Lawrence river in New York.

“With a lot of finesse-style hooks, you end up skin-hooking the fish on the roof of the mouth,” Feider explains. “The Neko Hook, it doesn’t skin-hook ‘em – it punches solid meat every time. It’s a big confidence-booster for me when every fish you set into is pinned perfect.” The Key for Feider is using Sufix® 832 hi vis 10lb braid, combined with a 6 or 8lb Sufix® 100% Fluorocarbon Invisiline™ Leader.

Before the tournament, which was dominated by drop-shotting, Bassmaster had reported that landing – not just hooking – the St. Lawrence’s hard-fighting, 5- and 6-pound smallies would be key. And indeed, Bassmaster Live viewers witnessed in real-time the heartbreak of several leading anglers whose hooks lost hold of huge bass boatside, depriving them of game-changing weight. “That was a $100,000 fish,” one leading angler said after losing one, Bassmaster reported.

But Feider and Palaniuk entered the competition confident their Neko Hooks would prevent such catastrophes. VMC is one of several Rapala Respected Brands and several Rapala pros have relied on Neko Hooks to win and place high in previous top tournaments, including Feider’s 1st-place finish on Minnesota’s Mille Lacs Lake in the final Bassmaster Elite tournament of 2016.

“I had such a good landing percentage on the Neko Hook wacky rigging, I started using it as my drop-shot hook for smallies,” Feider said following his win on Lake Mille Lacs, another fishery famous for football-shaped 5- and 6-pound smallies. Since Feider’s win with a Neko Hook, Palaniuk won a 2017 Bassmater Elite tournament on Sam Rayburn in Texas.

Rapala Pro Ott DeFoe has also enjoyed success arming his drop-shot and wacky worms with a Neko Hook, which he called “one of the most amazing pieces of tackle” he’s ever tied on. “Since getting them,” he wrote in a blog post last year, “I’ve caught literally hundreds of fish and I can only think of two that I’ve lost.”

Both Neko Hooks and Weedless Neko Hooks feature a black-nickel finish, wide gap, 3-degree offset point, resin-closed eye and a forged, long shank. They’re available in four sizes: 2, 1, 1/0 and 2/0.

’Great Big’ Spinbait Smallies
Although drop-shotting deep dominated the tournament, Feider “called an audible” occasionally and threw a Storm® Arashi® Spinbait in shallower water. That tactic put “two great big ones,” in the boat, he said.

In the St. Lawrence’s crystal-clear water – an environment in which bass can see your bait coming from far away – the Spinbait’s subtle action can be the difference between getting bites and coming up empty. Similar in looks to a top-water prop bait – but not designed to be fished on the surface – the Spinbait boasts a unique 3-2 prop design (three blades up front, two in back) that imparts a vibration that anglers easily feel, ensuring an optimal slow retrieve speed that will maximize the lure’s action and stay in the strike zone. In addition to imparting vibration and subtle flash, counter-rotating props ensure the bait swims a straight path back to the boat.

Rotated hook hangers, a feature of all baits in the Arashi line-up, ensure that the Spinbait’s two sticky-sharp No. 6 Premium VMC black-nickel treble hooks will grab fish and not let go. Spinbaits measure 3 1/8 inches, weigh 1/3 ounces and come in 10 fish-attracting color patterns: Hot Blue Shad, Bluegill, Blue Back Herring, Wakasagi, Ghost Hitch, Ghost Pearl Shad, Green Gill, Pro Blue, Black Silver Shad and Green Gold Shad.

Arashi (Ah-Rah-Shee) means “Storm” in Japanese. Storm is one of many respected names in the Rapala family of brands.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — When Walt Warren started entering B.A.S.S. sweepstakes in 2013, he thought he had a chance to win, but it took five years of persistence for it to come to fruition. After 125 entries, Warren won a brand-new bass boat and a chance to fish with 2014 Bassmaster Classic champion Randy Howell.

“I still can’t believe it,” the Edenton, N.C., resident said about learning he’d won the Fish With Randy Howell Sweepstakes. “I always try to win boats and trucks and stuff, and I have been wanting a boat for a long, long time. So, that was perfect. I couldn’t have asked for a better win.

“I don’t think I went to bed until around three in the morning. I told my wife ‘I believe I won a bass boat and trip,’ but of course she didn’t believe me.”

In October, Warren will be fishing with Howell on Lake Guntersville, which was ranked a Top 10 fishery in the country by Bassmaster Magazine. The trip will include round-trip airfare for one, two nights hotel accommodations, a rental car and $500 spending money.

The value of his prize totals $30,000.

After years of checking Bassmaster.com for sweepstakes, Warren said he’s excited to fish with Howell.

“I try to enter in the sweepstakes at least twice a week. It’s just fun for me to do,” said Warren, who works as a contractor. “I’m looking forward to learning from him. I’m very impressed with him — seems like a really nice man. I love bass fishing and that’s going to be fun watching that.”
