Natchitoches High Tandem Takes Lead At Bassmaster High School National Championship

PARIS, Tenn. — Cutting short their fishing time proved beneficial to Natchitoches Central High School anglers Hunter Owens and Wes Rollo during Thursday’s opening round of the Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School Series National Championship presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods at Kentucky Lake.

With a couple of their bass struggling in the livewell, Rollo and Owens decided to check in about an hour early and weighed a five-bass limit of 19 pounds, 11 ounces to take the lead.

The Louisiana anglers said their day went as expected from what they learned in practice.

“We started out in practice messing around deep and shallow and in between,” Rollo said. “We found the fish we wanted early on this morning and caught them real quick.”

The bite hit a short lull around 9 a.m. But then Rollo caught a 7-2 largemouth, and they culled three times during the next five minutes. When a couple of their fish started bellying up in the livewell, Rollo and Owens headed back to the Paris Landing ramp at 12:40 p.m., so they wouldn’t lose any fish and suffer the penalties.

Owens said they switched between a couple of lures throughout the morning before finally settling on one near the end of their day. He said he believes their areas spots have enough bass to produce the same results Friday.

“We were conservative today,” Owens said. “We didn’t just catch them and catch them (in the same place). We got what we needed for our limit.” Then they tried a couple of new areas and caught a few bass but didn’t cull.

Some last-hour heroics moved the Mount Ida (Ark.) High School team of Fisher Bissell and Fisher Davis into second place with four bass that weighed 19-4.

“It was really tough and really slow,” Bissell said. “We had one big bite (a 7-5 largemouth caught by Bissell) early in the morning, and then we had our last three keepers in the last 20 minutes.”

Davis noted the late flurry took place when they were about to move to another spot. The Arkansas angler said he was lifting the trolling motor with his line still in the water when he noticed the motor was still running.

When he dropped the trolling motor back in the water, he noticed his line was tightening and thought he was snagged on something. But it turned out to be one of the keepers they needed, so they stayed put and caught their next two keepers.

Georgia’s Pickens High School team of Spencer Childs and Owen Moss moved into third place with an 18-9 limit. Childs, who fished in last year’s championship, said the day went better than he expected after a slow practice.

Kyle Simmons and Brett Halstead of Capital City High School in Kansas are in fourth place with 18-3, and Grayson Morris and Tucker Smith of Alabama’s Briarwood Christian School are fifth with 16-10.

The leaders are among 670 anglers from 337 high school teams competing for the national title. The teams qualified through a series of state and regional tournaments.

Two high school anglers are teamed in each boat with an adult boat captain, who serves as a mentor and operates the outboard motor.

The full field of teams will compete again Friday, but the field will be cut to the Top 12 for Saturday’s final round. The teams are vying for $118,000 in scholarship money. B.A.S.S. and its sponsors are awarding $22,000 to the competitors, and Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn., will be presenting the remaining $96,000.

Hosts of the national championship are Henry County Tourism Authority, Carroll County and Bethel University. Anglers will take off at 5:45 a.m. CT from Paris Landing State Park and return at 1:45 p.m. to weigh in at the same location. The final weigh-in Saturday will switch locations to downtown Paris at 2:30 p.m.

RESULTS
Saturday July 28th, 2018 ~ Jordan Lake ~ Farrington Point Wildlife Ramp

[print_link]

Another great day for fishing!! The PBC Cashion Fishing Rods ‘End of Year’ Trail Qualifier #2 at Jordan Lake was a winner!  It started off with a beautiful morning with hardly no wind and am temps at around 72. Air temps rose to about 90 at the 2pm weighin and the winds were still light. The rain held off too! Water temps averaged about 87
degrees. The bite was typical for Summer but the top 6 teams were within 3 lbs. of each other! Real close at the top.
We also had 2 beautiful bass over 8 lbs. weighed in! About 2/3rds of the 44 boat field weighed in fish. Not bad.

The hottest team this year, Josh Hooks & Jaime Fajardo, again won 1st Place weighing in 5 bass at 20.75 lbs. and
also won 1st Place TWT for a total of $2,035 in winnings.  Hooks on left, Fajardo on right. Ben Cannon & Chad Craven came in 2nd place with 5 fish  weighing 19.42 lbs. & also won 2nd Place TWT to pocket a total of $1,000. 3rd place team, Todd Sumner & Mike  Dinterman won $457 with 5 weighing 19.09 lbs. The 1st Place Big Fish weighed 8.17 lbs. and was caught by the team of Mark Jones & Curtis Grasty netting them $616 in cash!! Right on their heels the 4th Place Team of Christian  Johnson & Brian Morgan had a 8.10 pounder to take 2nd Big Fish and $264 in cash. 128 fish were weighed in for a total of 381 pounds for an average of 2.98 lbs. each. Most of the larger fish were caught on Texas rigs, Carolina rigs, and Crankbaits in 4-12′ of water off main point dropoffs, wood & rock ledges and creek channels.

I want to thank all the anglers that participated and all our sponsors that support this trail. The next Cashion Fishing
Rods ‘End of Year’ Tournament Trail Qualifier will be August 11th at Falls Lake out of Ledge Rock Wildlife Ramp.

August 2018 Lake Anna Lake Report by Chris Craft

AUGUST OUTLOOK
[print_link]

As we head into August, we are usually greeted with below normal lake levels and above normal water temps. This year however, the lake is at FULL POOL and we are only in the low to mid 80’s with surface temps.

The popular Sunday Morning Bass Series is going well with a 20 boat average. There are nine more SMBS Events scheduled through September. The SMBS Fall Classic (100% payback) is Scheduled for Sunday October 21 from 7am-3pm. All you need to do is fish one regular season event to be eligible.

Talk around the lake is about the upcoming 2018 Angler Appreciation Tournament on Saturday October 27 (Make up date for weather will be on Sunday October 28, 2018). We will start taking entry fees on Saturday August 4 at 5:30am. The entry fee is $120 and includes big fish. Boat numbers will be assigned in the order that entries are received.

There have been a few changes in this years event. We will not be doing catered food, instead the monies that was spent on that will be put into the tournament prize monies.

As in the past, there will be three flights of boats that are seperated by 15 minutes each.

1st Flight- Boats 1-50 7:30am-3:30pm
2nd Flight- Boats 51-100 7:45am-3:45pm
3rd Flight- Boats 101-150 8:00am-4:00pm

BASS- Concentrate your efforts in deeper water this time of year. There is a small window of opportunity first thing of a morning with a top water bite, this is however very inconsistent. This bite happens around the many balls of shad and herring fry throughout the lake. They will push bait to the surface and feed very heavily for a few minutes and then they are done.

Drop shots and shakey head rigged plastics are your best bet, fish them around bridge pilings, boat docks and brush piles. A heavier weight is best this time of year as it will help in drawing a reaction strike from your fast falling bait. If you orefer to go “OLD SCHOOL” with you bait presentation, a big Texas Rigged worm, like a Zoom Ol Monster will put fish in the boat for you.

Deep crankbaits like the Norman DD-22, Strike King 5XD & 6XD fished on main lake points, bridge pilings and brush piles have always been a great way to catch deep summer time bass.

There are still fish in the willow grass up in the North Anna arm of the lake, even though water temps can reach the middle to upper 90’s this time of year. The grass provides shade and oxygen in this region of the lake. The best way to catch these fish is to start pitching and flipping jigs, creature baits and worms into the pockets withing the grass or even punch the heavier sections with a pegged weight (1/2oz or heavier).

Over on the Pamunkey arm, the rocky main lake points up past Hunters Landing will hold fish. Crankbaits and Carolina Rigged plastics are my favorite ways to entice strikes from fish in this area. The water tends to be darker on this side so keep you color pallets simple. Chart/Blue & Chart Sexy Shad on your crankbaits and Junebug, Plum & Red Shad with your plastics.

CRAPPIE- The crappie are in full blown summer pattern, they are in deep water around bridge pilings, brush piles and just following bait around the lake.
Fish a small minnow rigged under a slip bobber with minimal weight (just enough to keep minnow in place) or an abundance of artificial baits. Mt favorite is a 2″ Big Bite Lures Curly Tail Grub rigged on a Mizmo 1/16oz jig head in Tractor Green, Green Weenie, Back/Blue Chart Tail and Wally World.

STRIPER- This is one of my favorite times of year to chase striper, the shad and herring have finished their spawn and soon there will be pods of fry everywhere and they will be eating as much as possible every chance they get.

First thing of a morning, you can find them chasing balls of shad and herring fry to the surface. A broken back redfin is my favorite bait to entice explosive and violent strikes from aggressive line sides! A walking bait is fun to fish, but the hook up percentage is drastically lowered, due to the just slapping at the bait. The redfin is sub-surface, so you still get the top water strike, without the heartache of the fish missing the bait.

Once the morning surface feed is over, you can either troll them up or drop spoons to them. If trolling, Chart/Blue or Sexy Shad DD-22’s and Chrome/Blue or Chrome/Black deep diving redfins are both great choices. If using a redfin, tie a four to six foot leader off of the center split ring and put a 1/4oz buck tail behind it. Look for the from the power plant to just up lake from the splits.

Fishing 101 for Kids: A Parent’s Guide to the First Time by Bruce Callis

Fishing 101 for Kids:
A Parent’s Guide to the First Time

[print_link]

For every parent, teaching their children something new that they really aren’t good at can be one of our biggest fears. Little Johnny and Sarah want to go fishing, but you have never been in your life. You want to take them, but where do you start? Forget asking anyone at Walmart, most of the employees in the Sporting Goods department don’t know the first thing about fishing. I know, I have heard them trying to help a customer too many times. But as daunting as it may seem, it is really simple to get started.

The first thing you will need is a fishing pole. There are way too many choices, but it can be simple. Johnny wants a Spiderman pole and Sarah wants a Cinderella. These poles are geared to children. They are fairly simple to use, but at the same time, affordable. The only downfall to these rods is that the drag on them really stinks. If you can’t reel in a bluegill, what would happen if it is a bigger fish, like a 2 pound bass. I picked up a Zebco Dock Demon for my grandson. It comes spooled with line and has a much better drag system, but yet, the closed face reel is so easy to use. When you push down on the button and release your thumb off it, the line comes out. To cast, you hold down on the button, and as you reach the apex of the cast, release the button to send the bait forward into the water.

The simplest type of fishing for beginners is to use live bait. Now that we have a fishing pole, we need to set it up to go fishing on the bank. For this, we need to get a hook, sinker, and bobber. For hooks, we can go simple, and buy the snelled hooks that come in a package. If we are fishing for bream, bluegill, and crappie, we don’t need an extremely large hook. I picked up a package of number 4 hooks that are prestrung onto line. This makes it very simple to use. You just tie the line from the pole directly to the hook line. I would use a cinch knot that is very easy to tie.

Now we need a weight to help keep the hook down in the water. For this, all you truly need are split shot weights. They are simple to use, and can be reused at the same time. All you need is your fingers or a pair of pliers to attach them. You slide the open end over the line about 2 inches above the hook and close it around the line. Depending on the size you buy, you may just need one to accomplish your goal of suspending the hook below the surface under your bobber.

A bobber, is a floating device you attach to your line to suspend the bait at a certain depth. You can slide it up and down the line to adjust this depth. You don’t want it 4 foot above the hook if you are fishing in 2 feet of water. Here, there are many choices of style for the bobber. I have found that a round bobber is easier for a child to watch, and you don’t need to have a huge one. One that the child can see and still just big enough to stay afloat is all you need.

Now we have everything we need to go fishing, except, what do we put on the hook. Nightcrawlers are inexpensive, you can get 18 of them for $3.00 at Walmart. Just pay attention to the bar code so that you aren’t getting the expensive one. Keep them cool, placing them in the cooler, but don’t let them get soaking wet, as this will kill the worms. In general, each worm should yield about 4 pieces of bait, so 18 should give you an afternoon of fun.

While these are the basics of what you need for a family adventure at the pond, there are a few things that will help. Remember that kids can get bored easily. Have something for them to do as they take a break. Have drinks and snacks, they will get thirsty and hungry. Bring wipes to clean your hands with after cutting the worm and handling the fish. Also, a pair of needlenose pliers are always handy for removing the hook from the fish, and for the split shots. A towel, just in case an accident happens and a change of clothes, are always a plus that we hope we never need.

The main thing is, make it fun for you and them. If they have fun, they will want to go again. Don’t force them to stay if they are overheated. Let them dictate the way the day goes. That is what I do with my grandson. If we go for a hour or for 4 hours, it is his choice. And in the words of Franc White, the Southern Sportsman, “Do yourself a favor, take a kid fishing!”

Bluegrass Junior Anglers Take Bassmaster Junior National Championship

[print_link]

HUNTINGDON, Tenn. — By the smallest of margins, Trey McKinney and Carter Wijangco of the Bluegrass Jr. Bassmasters outlasted the 54-team field to win the 2018 Bassmaster Junior Championship on Carroll County 1,000 Acre Recreational Lake. Their two-day total of 17 pounds, 6 ounces, gave them a 1-ounce advantage over first-round leaders Jeremy Monda and Will Boyd of Florida.

On what was a tougher day on the Tennessee reservoir, the duo scrounged up a five-bass limit weighing 8 pounds, but that was enough to win the championship title. With water temperatures in the 80s, the offshore bite was the primary pattern for most of the teams, including McKinney and Wijangco.

“We were a bit nervous because the Florida team of Monda and Boyd were the leaders, and we had heard they caught another limit today,” McKinney, 13, said. “It was so nerve-racking on the ‘hot seat.’”

McKinney and Wijangco fished numerous baits this week and throughout practice, but their best lure was a Bizz Baits Dizzy Diamond stickbait rigged on a shaky head jig. They fished it slow on the bottom of numerous offshore spots. They learned from their experience in the 2017 Bassmaster Junior Championship, also held on Carroll County 1,000 Acre Recreational Lake, and used that knowledge to their benefit to win on their second try.

“I finished 27th last year, and Trey finished 13th with a different partner,” Wijangco, 14, said. “We fished offshore with the shaky head yesterday, but today we also used a jig and Carolina rig. Keeping our head up and staying positive was important.”

The team stayed patient as they only had three fish before 11 a.m. each day. In the final two hours, they were able to visit enough spots to find active fish.

“It seemed that most of the field was fishing the same 10 spots offshore, so we went to the vacant areas,” said Rick Cheatem, who served as boat captain for the pair. “Fishing spots by ourselves was important, and I’m proud of how Trey and Carter stayed in the game. In 15 minutes or so, they caught four or five fish and culled to their winning weight.”

After leading Tuesday with a 10-3 catch, Monda and Boyd only managed to catch a small limit weighing 7-2 and fell short of the title.

Representing Florida’s Quincy Junior Bassmasters, the duo concentrated on the mid-depth region of the lake and caught most of their fish with swim jigs, a bait that wasn’t a factor in the practice rounds but paid off when competition began.

“We used drop shots and other baits throughout practice,” Monda said. “We saw a pocket that looked great for a swim jig, so we threw it and caught a bunch of bass, and we kept using that in the tournament.”

Rochester Junior Bassmasters Rein Golubjatnikov and Matthew Pitcher placed third with a two-day total of 16-14. Golubjatnikov finished in the runner-up position in 2017 when he fished solo. This year the New York duo took home more hardware for their third-place finish.

The Big Bass of the tournament was caught by Terrance Wiseman and Isaac Shock of the Southern West Virginia Junior Bassmasters who brought a 7-1 lunker to the weigh-in stage on Day 2. The Big Bass of the tournament also vaulted them from 38th on Day 1 to 4th place overall.

The win netted McKinney and Wijangco $2,000 in scholarship money along with Abu Garcia rods and reels. Second place took home $1,000 in scholarship prizes along with Abu Garcia Veritas rods.

Wherever baitfish swim, bass bite Storm 360GT Searchbaits – Rapala

Wherever baitfish swim, bass bite Storm 360GT Searchbaits

  [print_link]

Anywhere and everywhere you see schools of baitfish this summer – shallow near the surface, or deep on your sonar graph – throw a Storm® 360GT Searchbait™ and you’ll put bass in the boat.

“You don’t even need to have cover, you just need to be around baitfish,” says Davy Hite, a Bassmaster Classic champion and seven-time Bassmaster tournament winner. “Whether you’re talking about shad, alewives, blueback herring, bluegill or perch, whatever waterbody you’re on will have some baitfish that the largemouth, smallmouth or spotted bass key on. So the 360GT’s slogan, ‘Throw it anywhere, catch fish everywhere’ really is perfect for the bait. I’ve fished it from Canada all the way to Florida, and it catches fish.”

“GT” stands for “Go To” bait. Creating the ultimate illusion of natural movement, the 360GT pairs a lifelike, single-ball rattling jig head with a realistic, phthalate-free soft body with 3D holographic eyes and a toe-in boot tail that elicits fish-attracting action and vibration at any retrieve speed.

“The boot tail does a couple things,” Hite explains. “It gives the bait vibration, which the fish can feel in the water. And the slim tail going to the boot gives the bait another action — it moves side to side, just like a fish trying to propel through the water.”

Like all professional anglers, Hite hits the water with several rods rigged with different baits to account for differing weather and water conditions. In the summer, one rod is always rigged with a 360GT. He picks it up when he sees schools of baitfish, be it 50 feet deep or a foot shallow.

“When I’m deep, I’ll see schools of baitfish on my sonar graph,” Hite explains. “When I’m shallow, I’ll actually see the baitfish in the water. So whether I’m fishing a river or stream, a natural lake or man-made reservoir, I’ll throw that 360GT when I see those baitfish.”

When baitfish are shallow, fishing a 360GT couldn’t be more simple – cast it out and reel it in. When your sonar graph shows schools of bait around deep structure like reefs, humps and rockpiles, just to name a few, you’ll need to count down your 360GT to the strikezone after casting toward your target.

“Just count down the bait until you get it to the right depth, and then reel it in slowly,” Hite explains. “Typically, that bait’s going to fall about a foot a second, but it varies.”

Baits fall faster or slower in different current and wind speeds. When water color allows, Hite gauges rate-of-fall by pitching his 360GT a few feet from the boat and counting “one-thousand-one, one-thousand two, and so on,” as he watches it fall. Once it’s out of sight, he stops counting and reels in, noting how much line he had out. “So then when I make a long cast on that same slack line, I’ll know how long to count it down to get to the bottom.”

Hite’s summer 360GT game plan includes a “deep-shallow” strategy as well. When his sonar graph shows baitfish schooling near the surface over water 50 feet deep or more, he casts at the school and reels in rapidly, with his rod tip high in the 10- or 11-o’clock position.

“A lot of times, those baitfish will be suspended in the summertime and the bass will be right under them,” Hite explains. “So cast out and start reeling immediately when the bait hits the water – maybe even slightly before – so it’s not sinking down any. The bass will come up to hit it.”

Smaller 360GT’s are generally better closer to the water surface, and vice versa to get to the bottom in deeper water. Pre-rigged 360GT’s are available in three sizes: 1/8 oz jighead, 3 1/2-inch body; ¼ oz. jighead, 4 ½-inch body; and 3/8 oz. jighead, 5 1/2-inch body. Each pre-rigged pairing comes in a package two extra bodies. Each size body is available in 11 color patterns: Chartreuse Ice, Gaga, Herring, Houdini, Hot Olive, Marilyn, Pearl Ice, Smokin’ Ghost, Smelt, Tru Blue and Volunteer.

In most situations, Hite fishes 360GT’s on 12-pound-test fluorocarbon line with a 7-foot medium or medium-heavy baitcasting rod and a 7:1 ratio baitcasting reel.

B.A.S.S. Will Not Reschedule 2018 Bassmaster Elite At Upper Chesapeake Bay

B.A.S.S. Will Not Reschedule 2018 Bassmaster Elite At Upper Chesapeake Bay

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — For the second time in the 2018 Bassmaster Elite Series season, B.A.S.S. was forced to postpone an Elite event because of massive flooding and unsafe boating conditions. And for the first time in Elite Series history, one of those events has been canceled altogether, the organization announced today.

The Huk Bassmaster Elite at Upper Chesapeake Bay presented by Mossy Oak Fishing will not be rescheduled, said Bruce Akin, CEO.

“By the time conditions on the upper Chesapeake Bay improved enough for competition, our great hosts at Harford County, Md., were unable to accommodate our event,” he said. “We could have switched the event to another fishery, but in consideration of Elite anglers who had important obligations during the times we had available, we elected to end the season with eight qualifying events, instead of the nine we had planned.

“We are really disappointed that we could not conduct the Maryland event as planned. We were anticipating huge crowds of spectators and excellent fish catches — as we always have on the upper Chesapeake.”

The regular season will end with the Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River presented by Black Velvet, to be held Aug. 23-26 at Waddington, N.Y. Elite anglers ranked in the Top 50 of the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points list after that event will compete in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship at Chatuge Lake at Young Harris, Ga., Sept. 20-23.

That championship will pay $1 million to the qualifiers based on cumulative AOY points, and it will determine the 2018 Bassmaster Angler of the Year as well as pro qualifiers for the Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods at Knoxville, Tenn., next March.

The decision to cancel was reached after discussions with B.A.S.S. sponsors, as well as consultations with the Elite Advisory Board — an 11-member panel of pros elected by their peers — and polling of the Elite Series field.

The Chesapeake Bay tournament was postponed on July 25, the eve of competition, after dam operators upstream announced plans to release massive quantities of water that were expected to create flooding downstream and fill the waterways with debris.

In addition, Maryland Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton issued a statement saying, “It is vitally important that anglers and boaters avoid the area downstream of the dam,” including the upper Chesapeake Bay. According to reports this week, flooding problems and hazardous boating conditions are ongoing.

“We regret the effect this decision has on our anglers who were hoping to improve their AOY standings in Elite No. 8, as well as on our sponsors, the host community of Harford County and our B.A.S.S. fans,” said B.A.S.S. Tournament Director Trip Weldon. “However, we had to consider the interests of all concerned when deciding to cancel.”

Time to Empty Your Bucket by Ron Bradley

Time to Empty Your Bucket by Ron Bradley

[print_link]

The Bucket list. I’m willing to bet that most of us avid anglers have one. A list of lakes you would love to fish for that monster bass. A place that amounts to heaven on earth in your eyes. I had one of about 10 lakes, lakes that I’ve been wanting to fish for years but never found the time to. The only lake I’ve managed to scratch off my bucket list is Lake Okeechobee. As for the rest of them I’m afraid it’s too late.

You see on May 5th of this year, my whole world changed in an instant. Something as little as getting out of my chair emptied my bucket list in the blink of an eye. A pop in my back and eight hours later I had no feeling below my waist, no control over my bowels or bladder. I suffered from what the doctors called Cauda Equina Syndrome, the result of a firefighting accident I had years ago. The two repaired disks finally gave out and exploded into my spinal canal. Now I sit here in my adult diapers. I’m no longer the independent person I once was. I must have help doing what was the simplest of task, like cooking, using the bathroom, getting dressed, etc.

My days of fishing are all but over. I haven’t been in a boat or held a rod since my accident. I am lucky in that I still run a tournament trail, Georgia Nitro Owners Tournament Trail, which allows me to still be apart of the sport. Only now I sit on the doc as my partner and friends fish. Words cannot describe how much that sucks.
I’m not telling you this for sympathy. I’m telling you this because I am an example of how quickly your life can change. Don’t let that bucket list sit there, go do it. Don’t just go do it, take someone you care about with you. These experiences are better shared with someone you care about. So grab your son, your wife, or whomever it is you want to share the experience with and get on it. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed to any of us.
